Best Time To Travel To Belize

Belize weather averages tracking chart.

The best time to visit Belize may depend on what you want to do. For example if you are an avid SCUBA diver , the best time may be when the waters are generally calm and this is in summer which is the off season for tourism. The tourism high season in Belize coincides with the cool and dry seasons – December to April. Thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday in November, is when overnight tourists start to travel to Belize.

The Tourism High Season

There are a few scattered rains in December when cold fronts start to arrive in Belize but this is tempered by the cooler temperatures and is well received by visitors and residents alike. Hotels and tourism resorts have high rack rates during this season as that is when demand is highest. Budget travelers need to take this into account. Traveling to Belize outside the high season can make for lodging discounts of 25% or more. The same applies to airline ticket prices. Reason why we always encourage potential visitors to check out our Where To Stay In Belize page and contact hotels directly to negotiate the best bang for your buck.

The single biggest wave of tourists is between December 15 and January 15, and during the weeks around the Easter season in April. Many visitors are fleeing the frost and snow in their home countries at this time and looking to spend their holidays in the tropics.

Tourism lodges charge top dollar during these peak tourism periods. Experts recommend avoiding the high season if you are looking to save money . Some resorts offer discounts in the high season provided that you book well in advance and make a deposit but you need to hunt around for those unadvertised specials

Easter in Belize includes the longest single holiday on the Belize calendar,  four consecutive public and bank holidays starting from Holy Friday and including Easter Monday. The international Cross Country Cycle Race is a highlight of this holiday. The weather tends to be dry and warm at this time and most Belizeans and visitors, including an increasing influx from the elite in Guatemala and El Salvador, make for the beaches and rivers to cool off and enjoy the sun, swimming, fishing and other recreational water sports .

The rainy season runs from June to November when annual Belize rainfall is highest. The early months of May and June when rainfall is just getting underway, are a good time to travel to Belize as you can  escape the tourist rush and hotel rates tend to be lower.

The downside is that some dirt roads get muddy and this may curtail visits to remote areas. When there is heavy rainfall, floods in the south, portions of some public highways are temporarily closed. Some caves, especially those used for cave tubing may not be not safe and are sometimes closed by the authorities during these conditions. While ground travel may be impeded in times of high rainfall, air transportation is readily available throughout the year.

Summer In Belize

Canoeing summer in Belize

Summer is the traditional “low season” for tourism in this country, and some resorts actually close down for a couple of months due to slow business. But Belize can be attractive for those seeking a summer break. During the summer months Belize receives less visitors giving tourists the opportunity to find more privacy in areas such as the beaches, caves and Maya Ruins. High traffic areas such as Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker get crowded to saturation level with locals during vacations such as Easter but outside this time frame you will see less tourists. The upside of the dry weather in summer is that river levels are low and safer for canoe and cave archaeology adventure tours such as the Belize ATM Cave .

In the rainy season, rain showers can be heavy so make your vacation plans accordingly. Ambergris Caye and the islands are generally avoided by tourists in the rainy season. Belize’s water temperature ranges between 79 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit. Recent developments in the tourism transport niche include scheduled  helicopter tours and rentals to the more natural and historic landmarks including the Great Blue Hole .

One of the best features about spending a summer vacation in Belize of course are the summer savings. Rates start falling from around May 1st. and remain relatively low until November.

Note: Change of seasons here has no effect on time. Belize has no Daylight Savings Time. We are set on GMT -6  (Central Time) year-round no matter the season!

When planning your trip, keep in mind the Belize Public and Bank Holidays .

Best Times To Visit Belize

The best time to visit Belize is from late November to mid-May, during the country's dry season. Although this peak season draws thousands of tourists, dealing with crowds is an easy sacrifice to make for warm temperatures, clear skies and easy access to the country's  top attractions . You'll probably want to pass on visiting during June and July, when humidity mists the tropical landscape and temps reach triple digits. Expect showers from June to mid-November and strong winds. If you want to beat the rush of tourists and don't mind packing an umbrella, come during the rainy season in September and October. But keep in mind that some establishments shut down during the offseason.

The Best Time to Visit Belize

With its lush rainforests and pristine beaches, Belize is a hidden gem nestled along the Caribbean Sea . This tropical paradise is less and less undiscovered every day, however, and is already a popular destination for snowbirds heading south in the winter months. So, when to visit this gorgeous nation and discover its myriad charms for yourself?

The best time to visit Belize is during the months of April and May, after the tourists have left and before the summer rains begin. Read on for your ultimate guide to visiting Belize, and start planning your next trip to this underrated getaway in Central America. After just one visit, you, too, will want to return year after year. Belize it.

Weather in Belize

Due to its tropical location, the weather in Belize remains warm year-round—though the chance of rainfall varies on a monthly basis. The nation’s climate is primarily split between two seasons: wet and dry. The average monthly rainfall is heavier in spring and fall, as the wet season begins in June and ends in November.

Hurricane season runs from June to November—with the most active period for tropical storms starting in late August, after a momentary pause in the country’s rainfall known as the “Little Dry” season. February through April are the driest months of the year, though it’s important to note that—even during the rainy season—it’s unlikely for storms to occupy the entire day. Oftentimes, these showers will pass quickly in the afternoons or early evening—leaving you free to go about your activities, and leaving behind (if you’re lucky) a rainbow in its wake.

Peak Tourist Season in Belize

Belize combines the rugged beauty of the jungles of Central America with the pristine coastline of the Caribbean islands. Yet, unlike its neighbors to the north (Tulum, Cancun) and east (the Cayman Islands , Jamaica), Belize is not on every traveler’s radar, at least not yet. Though many regions of the country remain gloriously untouched—the Maya mountains, the Cayo jungle, and numerous of the nation’s off-shore islands—destinations such as San Pedro become incrementally more popular in the wintertime.

The peak season arrives in November, starting with Thanksgiving, and ends in mid-April, after the last of the revelers enjoying spring break boards their return flight home. The heaviest rush of visitors descends upon its tropical soil from mid-December to mid-January. During this time, the cost of travel—hotel rates, airline tickets, regional activities—rises accordingly, as there is a higher demand.

Cost-conscious visitors should consider holding off on booking their stay until early spring when the prices drop, but temperatures do not. Aside from the often-fleeting afternoon shower (to be expected in a land known for its rainforest), the weather remains warm and sunny in Belize year-round.

Key Holidays & Festivals in Belize

Steeped in Mayan history (and boasting many of its ancient ruins), Belize is a treasure-trove of heritage sites and annual festivals that showcase the nation’s fascinating culture and heritage. This cultural heritage is not just limited to the Mayans—Belize boasts a diverse array of national cultures within its borders, notably including the Garifuna tribe, who arrived in Belize in the early 1800s. Garifuna Settlement Day, on Nov. 19, is a public holiday commemorating this event, while the Garifuna Music Festival: (which occurs the weekend prior) celebrates the distinct tradition of song and dance—not to mention delicious food. Another important public holiday is the Belize Independence Day, on Sept. 21, when there are flag-raising ceremonies and street parades. Additional annual festivities include the Holiday Boat Parade in San Pedro, and Belize Lobsterfest, a delicious tradition that takes place in June and July every summer.

Geographic Diversity in Belize

For a country that’s nearly the same size as the state of Massachusetts, Belize boasts a fantastically diverse ecosystem—from the famous Belize Barrier Reef (the second-largest in the world, right after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia), to its old-growth rainforests, and tropical jungles (a native homeland for jaguars). Since the country is relatively small, however, there isn’t a tremendous variance in the monthly climate for each region. As is to be expected, the hottest average temperatures are found inland, where the land’s atmosphere isn’t cooled by the breeze rolling off the Caribbean Sea.

The average annual maximum temperature in the Cayo District is 88 degrees F (31 degrees C), and the lowest is 69 degrees F (21 degrees C). As for the aforementioned coast, the average annual high is slightly lower at 86 degrees F (30 degrees C), with the low at 73 degrees F (23 degrees C). Thanks to its elevation, the Maya Mountains represent the coldest annual temperatures, with average highs of 78 degrees F (25 C), and the average low being 64 degrees F (18 degrees C). These changes in latitude don’t necessarily signify changes in attitude, however, as the warmth of the nation’s climate (and the kindness of its people) ensures travelers will remain in a vacation mindset wherever they may roam.

January falls during the peak tourist season in Belize, as travelers descend on the Central American country for the winter holidays. The first month of the New Year also heralds the start of the dry season and is also the coldest month of the year—though the tropical climate ensures temperatures will remain optimal for sun-worshippers. The average high is 80 degrees F (27 degrees C) and the average low is 70 degrees F (21 degrees C). January also has the coldest water temperature for the year, though, with a monthly average of 79 degrees F (26 degrees C), it’s still appealing for swimmers.

Events to check out:

  • New Year’s Day is an official holiday throughout the country, and travelers should look into restaurants offering brunch or dinner specials
  • Kwanzaa concludes on January 1 (after starting December 26) and many Belizeans celebrate their African heritage during this holiday

February continues to be peak season for Belize, though the prices are less inflated than the previous month, as the height of the tourist crowds arrives in mid-December to mid-January. February kicks off the driest months of the year (a spell that will last through April). The average monthly rainfall drops from six inches in January to three inches in February.

  • Fiesta de Carnaval is an annual celebration held during the week before Lent, in the bustling city of San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye. In anticipation of the upcoming 40 days of self-denial, revelers are encouraged to let loose with group dancing, street parades, and other activities.
  • Travelers visiting during Valentine's Day should monitor for dinner deals or romantic specials to capitalize on during their trip.

March is the driest month of the year (with an average rainfall of only two inches), The temperature, alternately, is on the rise, as is the average water temperature: the average high is 83 degrees F (27 degrees C) and the average water temperature is 81 degrees F (27 degrees C). March is the last month of peak season for tourism.

  • On March 9, Baron Bliss Day is observed in tribute to the fourth Baron Bliss of Portugal, who was a financial benefactor for Belize and died just off-shore. Horseracing and sailing events are held in his honor.

April is a great time for travelers to visit, as the weather remains dry and warm, but the prices drop after the tourist influx that occurs over the course of spring break. The weather in April has an average high of 85 degrees F (29 degrees C) and an average low of 80 degrees F (27 degrees C), with roughly two inches of average monthly rainfall.

  • Easter Week in Belize is observed with public holidays and events on Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday. There are also events scheduled for these dates—we recommend checking out the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycle Race .
  • The National Agriculture and Trade Show is an annual event held in Belmopan, in the Cayo District of Belize.

The last month of the year before the rainy season begins, this is also a wonderful month to visit Belize. May is also the warmest month of the year, with an average high of 87 degrees F (31 degrees C), and water temperatures rising from 79 degrees F (26 degrees C) to 83 degrees F (28 degrees C). Though the average monthly rainfall triples from last month, coming to nearly six inches, the showers are often fleeting and quick to pass. Nevertheless, pack a raincoat in your beach bag, just in case.

  • Labour Day occurs May 1, when Belizeans are given the day off from work, to honor those who have. The public holiday is sometimes called the International Workers Day.
  • On May 24, Commonwealth Day is celebrated across the country in honor of the Queen's Birthday; featuring horse races in Belize City.

June is the start of the rainy season, and the average monthly rainfall increases to nine inches, It's not yet peak hurricane season, however, so would-be travelers should not be too deterred—and should, in fact, be enticed by the annual Lobsterfest festivities that announce the beginning of summer in Belize.

  • The annual summer tradition of  Lobsterfest in Belize begins with San Pedro Lobsterfest in mid-June, before moving to Placencia, and finally Caye Caulker in early July. Revelers enjoy fresh lobster, live music, and even livelier dancing.

This month is the beginning of the most active period in the year for hurricanes, though the rainfall is still lower than it will be in September and October (averaging around eight inches).

  • The Benque Fiesta occurs in the border town of Benque Viejo Del Carmen, next to Guatemala. The fiesta features a historic pageant, the Flor de la Feria Pageant, as part of the annual fiesta in homage of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the town's patron saint.
  • Hopkins Mango Festival is held on the beach in Stann Creek; visitors can enjoy mango in all its iterations.

Though situated in the hurricane time period, August is actually a wonderful time to visit, as the weather begins to clear, before the more unpredictable climate patterns in the fall. The first part of the month offers an annual respite from the tropical showers, and these weeks in August are known as the “Little Dry” season.

  • The nine-day Deer Dance Festival is a traditional cultural event that occurs every August in the tiny Mayan village of San Antonio. The event features a dancing ritual that replicates the hunting of deer.
  • The Costa Maya Festival may not last as long in duration as the Deer Dance Festival (four days versus nine), but it also features music and dancing. in Ambergris Caye. The event includes the countries represented by Mayan civilization: Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and, of course, Belize.

September boasts the warmest water for swimming, with an average high of 84 degrees F (29 degrees C) and a plethora of cultural activities. This is a wonderful time to visit for travelers looking to experience Belizean culture and celebrate its history. St. George’s Caye Day on September 10 is the start of a season of patriotic celebration commemorating the country’s independence.

  • On September 10, St. George's Caye Day memorializes the 1798 battle between the Spanish and British forces at St. George's Caye and begins September's month of festivities.
  • Belize Independence Day on September 21 closes the celebratory season with flag-raising ceremonies and parades.

October is the wettest month of the year, with an average rainfall of 11 inches. Though this month is still within hurricane season for Belize, the weather patterns are less unpredictable than in November, and it remains balmy and warm, with an average high of 84 degrees F (29 degrees C).

  • October 12 marks  Pan-American Day , which is celebrated with beauty pageants, music festivals, and parades abound throughout various cities in Belize.
  • The TIDE Conservation Festival is an annual weekend event held in mid-October to raise awareness of the importance of Belize's natural environment; festivities include the Seafood Gala, the Youth Conservation Competition and the Fish Festival.

November boasts the most variable weather of the year and heralds both the end of the wet season and the beginning of the tourist season. The prices of hotel rooms and fees for activities and airline flights will increase once the first visitors begin to arrive in Belize for the Thanksgiving holiday.

  • From November 6-10, the  Belize International Film Festival showcases talent from Belize and Central America to promote international tolerance.
  • On November 16 and November 17, (prior to Settlement Day), the Garifuna Music Festival celebrates the Garifuna culture with dancing, music, and food.
  • Garifuna Settlement Day, on November 19, commemorates when the Garifuna people first arrived in Belize. Features a reenactment, as well as musical festivities.
  • On November 27,  San Pedro’s Township Day is celebrated on Ambergris Caye with boat races, fishing tournaments, and parades

It's not hard to realize why December is so popular for traveling in Belize, as the plethora of cultural events and festivities, combined with the arrival of the dry season makes this month endlessly appealing. The one drawback is the increased prices, however, though, compared with other Caribbean nations, Belize remains reasonably priced.

  • On December 8, the End of the World Marathon (full and half marathon) is held in Placencia to raise money for high school scholarships
  • On December 14, the Placencia Mistletoe Ball is also held in the region with music, dancing, raffles, and food.
  • Boxing Day , a British holiday, is observed on December 26 with concerts and horse races.
  • December 26 marks the beginning of Kwanzaa celebrations, which conclude on New Year's Day.
  • The  John Canoe AKA Wanaragua Jankunu Festival is a traditional Creole and Garifuna dance competition held on December 30.
  • The San Pedro Holiday Boat Parade is an annual attraction, with colorfully-lit boats (ornamented with Christmas lights) sailing past the shore.
  • The annual Love FM Christmas Parade is held in early to mid-December in San Pedro.

By April and May, the spring break crowds have waned and the summer rainy season has not yet started, making it the best time to visit Belize.

The wet season begins in June and ends in November, but there is brief period of time that is drier within the rainy season, usually during the first few weeks of August.

The weather in Belize is tropical year-round, with average high temperatures typically hovering around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) or higher. December and January tend to be slightly cooler, but not by much

Best and Worst Times to Visit Belize

The best times to visit Belize are February through April when rainfall reaches the lowest point of the year. But some months are better than others.

Belize is mainly a cruise destination with more than 600,000 visitors arriving by ship and nearly 300,000 arriving by air for hotel stays every year, according to the Belize Tourism Board .

The main port for cruise arrivals is Belize City. It’s a common stop on some western Caribbean cruises because of the country’s natural attractions and friendly, English-speaking population. It also has one of the best shore excursions in the entire Caribbean: cave tubing down Caves Branch River.

But anyone who goes there should prepare for rain during most months of the year. We went during the “dry season” and watched gigantic black clouds roll over our heads. Luckily, it didn’t rain during our cave tubing shore excusion .

3 Best Times to Visit

Out of any month of the year, one of the best times to visit Belize is March. Cruise and airport arrivals jump because of spring break for families with children and because total rainfall is the second lowest of the year.

March temperatures are comfortably warm with an average high of 85 degrees Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius in Belize City, according to historical data from the National Meteorological Service of Belize. The average low is mostly at night at 71 Fahrenheit or about 22 Celsius. Rainfall has averaged about 2.4 inches in March over a 30-year history.

Another best time to go to Belize is April. It is warmer with an average high of 87 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low of 74 degrees.

Historically, the total rainfall is slightly lower at two inches a month. Despite the better weather, April is less popular than March, January and February.

The next best month to visit is February. Rainfall is slightly higher at nearly 3 inches and temperatures reach an average of 83 degrees during the day and 68 degrees during the night.

These three months represent the Belize dry season. Rain is much heavier during the rest of the year.

May is a possible time to visit because of even warmer temperatures. But the risk of rain is higher, especially late in the month.

Worst Time to Visit: Belize Hurricane Season

The Belize hurricane season from June through November is the worst time to visit because the average rainfall jumps to one of the highest levels of any destination in the Caribbean.

The hurricane season in Belize is similar to the one for the entire Caribbean, which begins in June and runs through November. For Belize, this rainy season also goes into December.

Anyone who loves plenty of rain should visit Belize in September, when the average rainfall for the month is more than 11 inches or five times higher than April. As a result, it is no surprise that cruise and airport arrivals reach the lowest point of the year during September.

Not far behind September in total rainfall are June and October with 10 inches apiece. July, August and November also are not far behind with an average eight to nine inches. These months of June through November are the same months as the Caribbean hurricane season.

Other Times to Visit

January and May are transition months between the dry and hurricane seasons. They fall between the two extremes with about four to five inches of rain each month.

But temperatures for the two months are much different with an average high of 82 degrees in January and 89 degrees in May.

Anyone who likes the beach and ocean swimming should go in May and not January if they have a choice in when to go. They will have more comfortable conditions in May.

The other reason May is better is that it has slightly lower total rainfall than January.

That leaves December. It is the most popular month to visit Belize for cruise passengers, but it also has higher average rainfall at more than seven inches during the month.

Temperatures are lowest of the year with an average high of 81.7 degrees and a low of 67 degrees.

Average Monthly Weather

The average monthly weather for Belize has temperatures in the low to upper 80s Fahrenheit or the upper 20s to low 30s Celsius. Rainfall ranges from a low point of two inches in March and April to more than 11 inches in September.

January has the coolest weather of the year along with December. The average high temperature is 82 Fahrenheit or about 28 Celsius. Rainfall is moderate for Belize but high for other Caribbean destinations at five inches. Tourism is the second highest of the year.

Rainfall drops to three inches while the average high temperature edges up to 83 Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius. Tourism drops slightly. It’s a better month to visit than January.

Tourism reaches the highest point of the year thanks to spring break. Rainfall reaches the lowest point of the year at two inches. The average high makes a bigger climb to 85 Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius.

Belize weather in April is the best of the year. Like March, it has only two inches of rain historically during the month. But tourism drops—prices may drop as well—and the average highs move up to 87 Fahrenheit or 31 Celsius.

Tourism drops quite a bit in May. Rainfall edges up to four inches. The average high jumps to the highest point of the year to 89 Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius. This is the month to go for people who like it warm and humid. But go early in the month because hurricane season is getting close.

The high-risk weather arrives in June. The average rainfall skyrockets to 10 inches. It’s a good month to go only for people who like a lot of rain.

July weather in Belize is not much different from June. It’s warm, humid and wet. Like June, it averages 10 inches of rain.

August oddly takes a small break from the 10 inches of rain in June and July and the 10 to 11 inches in September and October. It averages only seven inches during the month. But like June and July, visitors should plan on a high risk of rain.

The prize for the worst month of the year goes to September with average rainfall of 11 inches. Temperatures maintain an average high in the upper 80s Fahrenheit that began in April.

Second place for worst month to visit Belize goes to October along with June and July. It also averages 10 inches of rain. The heat starts to ease with an average high of 86 Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius.

Cruise tourism begins to pick up in November as the hurricane season winds down. The average high temperature drops another two degrees. Rainfall historically is seven inches like August and December.

December is the most popular month of the year to visit Belize for cruise visitors. Temperatures drop to the lowest point of the year at 82 Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius. Rainfall at seven inches is higher than the coming dry season months but lower than the rest of the hurricane season.

The Best Times to Visit Belize for the Ultimate Tropical Vacation

These are the best times to go to Belize for lower prices, beautiful weather, and more.

the best time to travel to belize

Tucked under Mexico’s Quintana Roo state on the east coast of Central America, Belize is a nature lover’s paradise. The tiny nation punches above its weight when it comes to all the tropical adventures found along its roughly 240 miles of Caribbean coastline and within its jungle interior.

Belize has 400 islands and cays, including Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye, and Half Moon Caye. The country’s vast stretches of protected barrier reef are part of the largest barrier reef system in the Northern Hemisphere, making the country a must-visit destination for scuba divers and snorkelers. Diverse animal species — including jaguars, pumas, and ocelots – dwell in the country’s wildlands and national reserves, including the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Plus, Mayan ruins offer a fascinating look into the area’s ancient history.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Below, we’ve tapped local experts to determine the best times to visit Belize so you can start planning your tropical escape.

  • High Season: December to April
  • Shoulder Seasons: April to May and October to November
  • Low Season : June through September

These are the best times to go to Belize for beautiful weather, fewer crowds, and more.

Best Times to Visit Belize for Smaller Crowds

Belize is busiest around the holiday season from late December to early January and during March and April. “November and May are great times to avoid crowds as most families are preparing for the holidays or back in school from breaks,” says Janet Woollam, managing director at Victoria House Resort & Spa , a 42-key property on Ambergris Caye with a private beachfront. “During these months, travelers can have a more relaxed experience visiting low-trafficked sites like ancient Mayan temples, joining rainforest expeditions, or zip-lining over jungle canopies teeming with adorable black howler monkeys,” she says.

Best Times to Visit Belize for Good Weather

While “good weather” can be subjective, it’s safe to say most travelers want to enjoy sunny skies and moderate temperatures and avoid tropical thunderstorms and stifling humidity.

“January to March are the driest months to visit Belize, with prolonged periods of warm sunshine particularly in the north and central regions,” says William Allison, senior Belize specialist at Audley Travel . Woollam suggests February as a pleasant month to visit, too – but you won’t be the only one with Belize on your radar at this time of year when the temperatures are at their all-around nicest for spending time outside.

Best Times to Visit Belize for Lower Prices

As long as you don’t mind the rain, June and July can be a good time to take advantage of discounted travel, Allison says.

“The rainy season (in Belize) begins in June, and with it comes lower prices at hotels,” he says. “June and July are still rewarding times to visit, and the rain is rarely the persistent rainfall that is experienced later in the season, with sharp showers predominantly falling in the afternoon and at night.”

Another perk of visiting Belize at this time of year, he says, is the start of Caribbean Spiny Lobster season, which kicks off in mid-June and runs through Feb. 15. “Placencia and Ambergris Caye are great places to try some tasty lobster dishes,” he suggests.

Woollam points to September and October as the traditional sweet spot in Belize for landing lower prices outside of the hotter summer months but warns, “This can be somewhat skewed, as interest in travel is at a high since many would-be travelers weren’t able to go on holiday for the past few years.”

Best Times to Visit Belize for Scuba Diving and Snorkeling

With waters so blue and brilliant, almost everyone who visits Belize wants to spend some time splashing in the Caribbean Sea. You can snorkel and scuba dive year round in Belize with an average water temperature of around 80 degrees, depending on the season. Water and air temperatures are slightly cooler in Belize during the dry season, which starts in November and runs to July.

To find diving and snorkeling tour operators, head to spots like Placencia, Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker. “Ambergris Caye also serves as a base to plan your offshore dive trips to the world-renowned Blue Hole dive site at Lighthouse Reef Atoll or the less-recognized but equally impressive Turneffe Atoll,” says Woollam, whose hotel arranges local scuba and snorkel tours as well as excursions further afield.

For a truly special marine encounter, Allison recommends traveling offshore from Placencia to Gladden Spit. “It’s one of the few places in the world that snorkelers and divers can encounter the magnificent whale sharks,” he says, referring to the world’s largest (and very docile, filter-feeding) fish. “They commonly visit during the full moon periods of April and May.”

Worst Times to Visit Belize

There really isn’t a terrible time to visit Belize, as long as you can handle some inclement weather. If you want to avoid the rain, steer clear of Belize from June through November, which is when hurricane season intersects the rainiest months of the year. While rainstorms during this period are unlikely to wash out an entire day’s worth of vacation fun, they can lead to canceled activities when there's a heavy enough downpour, so it’s something to consider as you plot out your trip.

“By early August, travel is more challenging in Belize as the wet season progresses, and there is a low risk of hurricanes” warns Allison. Travelers should also be aware that some businesses close up in September to perform annual maintenance, he says, so plan accordingly.

Tiny, tropical Belize is where Latin-flavored Central America meets the captivating culture of the Caribbean, but it pays to think about when to go.

You’ll get the best out of Belize’s Maya ruins, vine-draped rainforests and impressive barrier reef (the largest outside of Australia) during the dry season from December to April. At other times, crowds evaporate and prices plummet, offering a more relaxed taste of the tropics.

Many visitors swear by the shoulder season in November and May, when there’s still plenty of sunshine, but much less competition for towel space on Belize’s Caribbean beaches.

Some activities , though, are definitely better in the dry – rain can put a real damper on diving in the spooky Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef or exploring the flooded caverns of Actun Tunichil Muknal.

Plus, the summer heat can be a lot to handle. Here’s our guide to help you decide the perfect time to visit Belize.

A wooden boardwalk across shallow blue-green water leading towards a palm-fringed beach at Tobacco Caye, Belize

The dry season (December to April) has the best weather

Brilliant blue skies. Birdlife checking in along the Caribbean Coast. Belize's dry season (December to April) offers prime weather for birding, sunbathing, swimming and diving on the beaches of Caye Caulker , Ambergris Caye  and hundreds of other islands along the Belize Barrier Reef. Accordingly, hotels and transport operators bump up their prices by 30% to 50%.

Although the dry season only really gets underway in late January, the post–New Year holidays see a huge influx of people and a big increase in prices, so those extra-high “peak” prices apply from mid-December to mid-January. Reservations are essential if you plan on enjoying some Christmas sun.

There are big NYE parties in San Pedro and horse races at Burrell Boom. Cyclists ride from Corozal to Belize City for the Krem Annual New Year's Day Classic.

In February, prices for accommodation remain high, and there’s lots of demand for space on boats to the cayes and trips inland to caves, ruins and jungle reserves. Lagoons and rivers begin to dry up and birds become easier to spot, as they congregate around the limited remaining water sources.

The dry season is also the best time to explore the Maya wonders of the country, from the stepped pyramids of Caracol and Altun Ha to the menacing masks adorning temples at Lamanai and Xunantunich .

Cavers can take advantage of the dry weather to wriggle and wade deep underground in sacred caves such as Actun Tunichil Muknal and Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve.

Belize celebrates Easter with passion, so expect extra crowds during the April weeks before and after Semana Santa (Holy Week).

Sandy street on Caye Caulker

November and May mean fewer crowds and cheaper prices

The crowds die down on either side of the peak dry months. However, most of Belize’s attractions stay open and hotels offer wallet-friendly prices. Temperatures stay warm in November and May, there are plenty of dry days and you won’t have to share the temples, beaches and jungles with a crowd.

Visit in November and you can also join the party for Garifuna Settlement Day  celebrating the culture of the Garifuna people – descendants of escaped enslaved Africans and Indigenous Carib people, who were evicted to Central America from St Vincent .  Garifuna Settlement Day is held on November 19.

Humidity increases and the dry season gradually turns to the wet season toward the end of May, but this can be a good time to travel with fewer tourists and low prices. There are still plenty of dry days and most tourist attractions stay open.

May is also a great time to go diving in Belize. There was once a good chance of encountering whale sharks during this time as they gathered to feast on the eggs released by breeding snappers in the Gladden Spit & Silk Cayes Marine Reserve.

However, sightings have been vanishingly rare in recent years. There's hope that they will return in greater numbers soon.

The chocolate festival in Toledo and the cashew festival in Crooked Tree Village are good reasons to detour inland in May, too.

A boy swims in the crystal clear waters of San Pedro, Belize

June to October is the wet season

Low season means low prices, but this is the off-season for a reason. Heavy rainfall and high temperatures sweep across the country from June to mid-November. The rain is especially present at night when thunder and lightning put on quite a show.

Some hotels and tourist-oriented attractions close down for the season, especially in September and October, and trips into the rainforest and to Maya ruins are marred by muddy tracks and abundant mosquitos.

Hurricanes are possible between August and October and can cause chaos on the coast (the last hurricane to make landfall in Belize was Hurricane Nana in 2020). But in case that sounds like a doom-laden forecast, it doesn’t rain all day – or indeed every day – and most of the showers take place overnight or early morning.

Conversely, September is also the most festive month in Belize – particularly in Belize City – as locals celebrate national holidays with gusto.

Resorts often slash their prices in the wet season, meaning some real bargains for travelers who don’t need constant sunshine. Play it safe and bring waterproofs, a rain-proof cover for your backpack and a dry bag for your electronics.

When is the best time to visit Belize?

  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit Belize is during the dry season, which is between January and May. Although you can enjoy warm temperatures across the country, the type of weather you get will depend on the region. Expect clear, sunny days in the Cayo District and on the Cayes. The Toledo District and Placencia enjoy a more tropical climate where there’s a chance of rain at any time of year, but this is what gives these regions their lush beauty.

The wet season runs from June to December, but travel is still possible until early August, with rain mostly falling in the afternoon. Travel becomes challenging as the season progresses, and there is a low risk of hurricanes. Some businesses will close during this time.

Belize Weather & Climate

Belize has a comfortable subtropical climate that is suitable for travel year-round. The average yearly temperature is about 80 degrees F with humidity hovering about 85%. The coolest winter temperatures can reach the low 60’s. During the hottest parts of summer, it can reach the mid 90’s on the mainland.

Trade winds blow along the coast, cayes (pronounced keys) and reef most of the year, keeping temperatures pleasant. Rainfall is heaviest in the south and in the lowland jungle areas. It is lightest in the north and on the cayes. Climate can be determined by altitude, with evenings at higher elevations pleasantly cool while the lowland jungle is often muggy and humid. Read on for more details and our expert tips on the best time to visit Belize.

Belize has two distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season typically occurs December through May and the wet season June through November. In the tropics, rain can occur any time of year, but during the dry season rain falls in brief bursts. Some locals recognize a third transition season during the winter. Here we take a deeper dive to help travelers understand Belize travel seasons and the best time of year to visit.

Belize Dry Season – High Season for Travel

The Belize dry season occurs from December through May and is high season for travel and cruising. Climate is characterized by warm to hot temperatures, sunny days, cooling trade winds and little rain.

From December through February, strong northerly winds called “nortes” can blow (see norte season below). March and April are idyllic with little rain, pleasant temperatures and calm, clear water. When rain does fall during the dry season, it typically falls in moderate short spurts resulting in a pleasant cooling effect.

During the high season, especially around the Christmas and Easter holidays, prices are higher. Hotels and attractions are more crowded. Belize small ship cruises sell out fast. We recommend booking early if you plan to travel during the dry season in Belize.

Some Belizeans will recognize a third season, when the rainy season transitions to dry. The norte season occurs from November through February and is characterized by occasional strong northerly winds or “nortes” coming from the U.S. and Mexico. Nortes can bring thick clouds and cool nights, causing some of the lowest temperatures of the year in the low 60’s.

Belize Rainy Season – Low Season for Travel

June through November marks the rainy season in Belize. The rainy season, also known as green season or Belize low season, is characterized by warm temperatures and brief but sometimes intense rain. The rainforest and wildlife come to life with trees and flowers in bloom. This in turn makes birds and wildlife more accessible to travelers.

Tropical rainfall occurs in June or early July and is punctuated by a reprieve in late July and August known as the “mauger” or “little dry season.” The wettest months occur in September and October. Unless there is a tropical storm, rain showers typically arrive in showers lasting one to two hours.

The amount of rain can vary considerably by region. For instance, southern Belize can receive more than 150 inches per year while the north rarely receives more than 50 inches per year.

Belize hurricane season formally coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 until November 30 each year. Historically, the most active period for tropical storms is the end of August through mid-October.  Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Belize but can be serious when they do. If you plan to travel this time of year, keep an eye on weather reports and purchase travel insurance at the time of booking.

This is when the waters are calmest and clearest, making it easier to spot marine life. The famous Great Blue Hole, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is especially stunning during this time.

Birdwatching

Belize is home to over 500 species of birds, making it a prime destination for birdwatching enthusiasts. The best time for birdwatching is during the dry season, from November to April, as migratory birds arrive and breed in the country. However, many species can be spotted year-round.

Hiking and Adventure Sports

For those who love outdoor adventure, the dry season is the ideal time to visit Belize. From November to April, the weather is perfect for hiking, zip-lining, cave tubing, and other adventure sports. The trails and parks are also more accessible during this time due to the lower rainfall.

Exploring Mayan Ruins

Belize is home to numerous Mayan ruins, including Caracol, Xunantunich, and

Lamanai. The best time to explore these ancient sites is during the dry season, from November to April. The weather is more predictable, and the lower humidity makes it more comfortable to tour these archaeological wonders. However, if you don’t mind a bit of rain, the wet season offers fewer crowds and a more immersive experience.

Wildlife Encounters

Belize’s lush jungles and pristine waters are home to a wide array of wildlife, including jaguars, tapirs, manatees, and various species of monkeys. Although wildlife can be spotted throughout the year, the dry season offers more predictable weather conditions and better visibility for wildlife encounters. For marine life, such as whale sharks and sea turtles, the best time to visit is from March to June.

4. Events and Festivals

Belize’s rich cultural heritage is showcased through various events and festivals throughout the year. Here are some of the most popular events to consider when planning your trip.

La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge (March)

This annual canoe race takes place over four days and covers 180 miles of the Belize River. The race attracts participants from around the world and is a great opportunity to experience the excitement and camaraderie of this unique event.

Chocolate Festival of Belize (May)

Held in the Toledo District, this three-day festival celebrates all things chocolate. The event features chocolate-themed dishes, local cacao products, live music, and cultural performances. It’s a must-visit for chocolate lovers and those interested in Belize’s cacao production.

Lobsterfest (June/July)

Lobster season in Belize is a time of celebration, with various Lobsterfest events held in popular destinations such as Placencia, Caye Caulker, and San Pedro. These festivals feature live music, delicious lobster dishes, and cultural performances.

Belize Independence Day (September 21)

Belize gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1981, and the country celebrates this milestone every year on September 21. The festivities include colorful parades, live music, and cultural events throughout the country.

Garifuna Settlement Day (November 19)

This national holiday commemorates the arrival of the Garifuna people to Belize in 1802. The celebrations include traditional drumming, dancing, and re-enactments of the Garifuna landing. The town of Dangriga is particularly known for its vibrant Garifuna Settlement Day festivities.

5. Conclusion

In summary, the best time to visit Belize depends on your personal preferences and the activities you wish to enjoy. The dry season (November to April) offers the most favorable weather conditions for outdoor activities, snorkeling, diving, and exploring the country’s archaeological sites. However, the wet season (May to October) can be a great option for those looking to avoid crowds and enjoy lower prices on accommodations.

Regardless of when you choose to visit, Belize offers an unforgettable experience filled with natural beauty, fascinating history, and vibrant culture. Happy travels!

The Best Time To Visit Belize (2024 Update) Depends On What You Are Looking For

Mother nature’s best kept secret see’s a surprising number of visitors for a “secret”, but with lush virgin jungles and cushiony white sand beaches it no wonder why. Despite all the adventurers who trek here, many people still find themselves wondering: When is the best time to visit Belize ?

As any local will happily tell you, it’s always a good time for an unBelizable vacation, and that’s true. Depending on your tastes, however, there’s a good time (which is seriously always) and the best time for you to visit Belize.

Here are the best times, for who, and why, to visit our slice of Caribbean paradise.

Belize’s “High (peak) Season”

img 7542

in this sense, the word “season” doesn’t refer to any natural phenomenon in particular, if not simply the period of time where travel to Belize is more frequent. Belize’s high season extends from roughly mid-November and thins out approaching the end of May and is when Belize is truly a bustling little center of people and activity. In these months in North America and Europe, leaves have fallen, winds get stronger, temperatures plummet and it eventually starts to snow which are strong indicators that it is time to migrate south for the winter, or at least a small part of it.

High season weather is the perfect spring break weather in Belize, travelers flocking south will find that our “winter” climate is quite a bit more docile and prone to more sunny warm days than not. Traveling here anywhere between mid-February to the mid-April will find you in the most agreeable, outdoor friendly tropical weather one can imagine.

img 6687

If escaping your winter grays for lush green and turquoise seas is your mission, then this is a perfect time for you.

Of course, we can’t let that inviting climate go to waste by staying inside our hotel rooms, there’s much to do and many events to experience if coming to Belize during this time. Kicking it off in late November for the high season is a Belizean take on Thanksgiving; while not exactly the same as in the US, locals make turkey dinner with all the fixings including dessert and you can even book a Thanksgiving Belize Vacation to experience all the family togetherness with none of the prep hassles.

Directly after Thanksgiving is, of course, Christmas and being a generally Christian populace, Belizeans celebrate Christmas big. for those who like to immerse themselves in a peoples’ culture and who are religious themselves, churches hold midnight mass ceremonies to commemorate the birth of Jesus with festive songs, nativity scenes, and fireworks. Christmas might be family time, but as hospitable as the locals are you can quickly become part of the extended family and be invited to a large Belizean Christmas get-together.

For the fun loving crowd, just 5 days after the togetherness of Christmas come the merrymaking blowouts of Belize’s New Year Celebrations. New year in Belize is a socializing event, many of the local watering holes and lounges throw large elaborate parties that come alive with celebrating citizens starting in the early evening and stretching well into the morning of the first day of the new year. Going out on new year’s eve for a party is an awesome way to see the livelier side of Belizean night-life and worth a swing if you’re traveling at this time.

Taking a departure from the crazy fun of parties and family dinners, have you ever stopped to imagine taking your significant other on a quiet date to a private dinner in the rainforest or beside a beach?

Valentines day in Belize can be the perfect time to plan and live out your dream date, Belizeans are quite a romantic bunch and know just how to make your date extra special for your special someone if you or your significant other find adventure in the tropics romantic then valentines day is the best time to visit Belize.

March in Belize marks the beginning of all the spring-time fun , all the island vacations start then because the weather is all around perfect, and the Ruta Maya Belize River challenge buzz is in full swing.

img 0489 2

The Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge (Ruta Maya for short) is a 4-day long time trial endurance canoe race from the scenic Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio down the Belize river to the old capital. Teams of two or three may enter under different categories, including pleasure craft (just for fun) to paddle down the river to the different stations over the long holiday. Participation is not exclusive to locals, travelers, and foreign teams can enter at their discretion or you can follow along and camp out (and party!) at the different checkpoints as the race goes on.

Rounding out the high season big events roster is Easter. As mentioned before, due to Belize’s large Christian population Easter is also quite the festival to behold. Due to the fasting restrictions, the food cooked on these days by the locals is decidedly themed and centers around non-meat dishes, save for fish.

img 2890

The church groups organize large elaborate processions depicting the stations of the cross while the locals make beautiful colored sawdust carpet art on the roadways that the procession will pass along. At each pre-determined “station” the procession stops and acts out a different scene of the passion of christ on his walk to crucifixion. It is a little macabre to think about, but it’s an elaborate festival with a lot of thought put into it and is a spectacle to behold.

An added benefit to all the festivities in the months of the high season is a boost to the amount and options for accommodations, some resorts close during the low season slightly limiting your options. Airfare is also more competitive during these times, especially with the newest introduction of Jet Blue’s new route to Belize that starts in October making it easier than ever to get to Belize from wherever you are.

Some seafood also has controlled seasons such as conch and lobster in Belize of which conch is in season during high season and lobster is not.

Belize’s “Low Season”

Belize’s low season extends from the start of June until mid-November when the aforementioned high season kicks off. The low or slow season as we sometimes call it is punctuated by better deals across the board from properties and attractions.

img 9872 3

Our summer low season sees more private vacations for travelers who choose to go on holiday during this time and the summer months do not hinder adventures as a majority percentage of our attractions and tours do not close when the season is off. Coming to Belize during our summer and early fall months also gives the opportunity to have a more authentic Belize experience, the higher local to traveler ratio ensures a better chance to see Belizeans in a more relaxed, natural state of being than they would be during busy times.

The low season begins in what we mostly consider the peak of our Caribbean summer, May and June are probably our hottest months. While that prospect may not sound ideal we assure you it is; being a small nation on the edge of the Caribbean sea and dotted with white sand islands makes water sports one of the most enjoyable things here.

img 9476 2

Departing from the heat, July onward starts cooling down with the arrival of the rains which come and go at their pleasing throughout August, September, and October. However frequent our rainstorms may be they are always short lived, rarely ever raining constantly for more than an hour before moving on to somewhere else in Belize.

June 15th is the kick off for Lobster season in Belize and in ceremonial fashion the kick off for the real Belizean summer and all the fun associated with it.

360163492 666642305490736 180434288988233461 n

To commemorate the opening of the season for lobster the country hosts the annual Lobster fest which is a two-week long party that is spread out between San Pedro town, Caye Caulker, and Placencia village.

360154504 10159823707623741 7803328847107219145 n

Lobsterfest is exactly what it sounds like and just what one would think; a large party in which one eats all things lobster. The locals get creative with their servings of the dish, grilling it, baking it making it into fritters, ceviche, and stews. over these two weeks and three weekends, if you choose to follow it you can partake in all the merriment locals do having your favorite cocktails the Belizean way and a variety of lobster however you may like it. If seafood is your thing, Lobsterfest is definitely the best time to visit Belize.

If lobster isn’t much to your fancy then how about whale sharks? No, we don’t eat whale sharks in Belize, but we do dive with them. Whale sharks are quite literally the biggest fish in the sea measuring up to 40 feet in length which is about three and a half building levels high (for some perspective). The beginning of our balmy summers see’s the annual drive-by of migrating whale sharks to our warm waters in order to spawn. A few choice days in the end of April and the end of May are the best to come see these gargantuan creatures glide through the water feeding on jack and snapper near the Gladden Split.

img 9702

Snorkel and Scuba expeditions are available for travelers who would like to experience swimming with these submarine sized fish in our clear blue waters, and for those wondering, whale sharks are very tolerant of divers and haven’t been known for liking humans as snacks!

Next up, Belize in September , our month of patriotic celebrations. On the 10th day, Battle of St. Georges cay day commemorates the only major armed conflict to ever occur here. Marching bands and parades take to the streets of the towns and cities on this public and bank holiday and can be considered a spectator sport for travelers as most locals will be parading instead of being at work for the day.

302675486 10160115572308187 839865986935599702 n

The real big one in September, however, is the 21st, our Independence day. The festivities such as carnivals happen to surround the date, usually, a week before save for the Orange Walk carnival which takes place on an actual day. The carnivals are large scale parades similar to the ones held in other Caribbean nations with big trucks blasting music and costumed dancers making their way behind them, these are quite the spectacle to behold and participation is encouraged so don’t feel afraid to jump right in!

41550858 1183085541841827 2763436354007203840 n

In addition to our patriotic nature, the low season is also the best time to visit if you are more interested in some of our customs that receive less fanfare. When most of you will be celebrating Halloween and trick or treating, locals will be celebrating  Finados .

73248169 10156416895061856 5535589996976668672 n

Finados is a set of days from October 31st to November 2nd in which the dead are honored with prayers and offerings of food much like Dia de Los Muertos in Mexico. Local celebrators construct altars in their homes with pictures of loved ones that have passed on and light candles near the tombs to honor and comfort them.

73495286 10156416919781856 8124822490343014400 n

Edging toward the re-start of high season is the “final” calendar event. Garifuna settlement day in Belize is the day in which we collectively honor the day in which the Garifuna officially came here to live.

316934985 216822324032359 2321651506703304591 n

The day is festive with Garifuna parades showcasing their flag, traditional dress, their famous drum music and their dances. Aside from all the kinetic energy flowing through on that day, Garifuna settlement day also sees their traditional cooking and dishes on sale for all to enjoy, Garifuna people and even non-Garifuna try their hand at dishes like Sere and Hudut and Boil Up to fuel all the lively celebrations taking place.

There’s always something to see or do in this little country called Belize, so much that it must become somewhat confusing after a while when to come. Depending on your reasons for travel, what is generally a good time for a Belize visit could actually be The best time for you!

Best Time to Visit Belize: When Should I Come?

The best time to visit Belize is from mid-November to April. This peak tourist season boasts plenty of sunshine making it an ideal time for exploring rainforests, scuba diving and lounging on the white sandy beaches.

There is no clear answer to the question when is the best time to visit Belize? because there is always something exciting to do and see in the country. The drier, warm months are more popular with tourists, but the off-season rainier months can be a great opportunity to partake in fishing, snorkeling, or diving. With plenty of colorful and lively festivals occurring throughout the year, visitors to Belize are sure to find plenty of excitement no matter when they arrive.

The Two Seasons of Belize

The weather in Belize is divided into two seasons, the dry season and the rainy season. Both seasons are approximately equal in terms of temperature, although the rainy season is slightly cooler. Because more tourists come to Belize during the drier months, this is known locally as the “high season”, with correspondingly higher rates for accommodation and entertainment venues. The “low season” is when fewer visitors come to Belize, and lodging costs are roughly a third to half as much as during the high season.

Generally speaking, the best time for visitors to experience Belize is between late November and early April, which falls during the country’s dry season. Thousands of tourists come to Belize during this time of the year, drawn to the delightfully warm temperatures, sunny skies, and many local festivals and celebrations.

Less popular for tourists is the period between late April and the month of May, as humidity levels rise to truly tropical levels, and daytime highs top out in the low 100s Fahrenheit. The period from June to early November is the rainy season, with regular precipitation and tropical storms and strong winds. Less popular with tourists, but still a good time to visit, is the period between September and October, when rains tamper off somewhat.

High Season in Belize – November to April

The height of the dry season, the skies remain clear and sunny, and temperatures average about 80 Fahrenheit. Starting in late December, strong winds come bearing down from the north, known locally as “northers”, which will continue off and on through February. Starting in March, the weather becomes more calm, and temperatures become much more pleasant. March and April are prime months for scuba diving and snorkeling, as the waters off the coast become more tranquil and calm. Local hotels usually offer off-season rates during March and April.

Low Season in Belize – June to November

The green season in Belize, which can sometimes see hurricanes and other strong tropical storms. The height of the rainy season are the months of August, September, and October, which feature near-daily rain showers. Daytime temperatures range from the mid 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit. Fewer tourists come to Belize during this period, but intrepid visitors can take advantage of off-season rates.

Weather in Belize: Dry Season vs Green Season

Belize is typically hot and humid day and night year-round. Temperatures vary by only about 4°C between the coolest part of the year (December to March) and the hottest (May to September). The daily temperature range is around 10°C from the hottest part of the day to the coolest part of the night. In the uplands (Mountain Pine Ridge and the Maya Mountains) you can expect temperatures to fall by about 3°C for every 1000ft rise in altitude, making things noticeably more comfortable.

Dry vs Green Season in Belize

Belize has distinct wet and green seasons. The green season runs from mid-May to November in the south and from mid-June to November in the north. November to February is a transitional period, with the year’s coolest temperatures and a limited amount of rain. The true dry season is February to April. There’s quite a large difference in rainfall between the north of the country (around 1500mm or 60in a year) and the south (about 4000mm or 160in). In the north and center of the country there’s a dip in rainfall in August, between peaks in July and September.

Last modified: October 10th, 2023

The best time to visit Belize to see the Great Blue Hole is during the dry season, between January and May which brings perfect conditions for scenic flights, snorkelling, and diving in the region. June to November marks the rainy season in Belize with August to October potentially bringing hurricanes.

During the dry season, temperatures average 27°C (81°F) and conditions are clear and calm, perfect for outdoor adventures in the Cayo District , or underwater experiences in Ambergris Caye .

The shoulder season months of November, May, and June are also a good time to visit Belize. The rainfall isn’t too heavy, allowing for exclusive activities with fewer people around. Placencia is a great place to visit at this time of the year, as the diving spots will not be overcrowded.

The rainy season in Belize runs from June to November. Each month experiences rainfall differently, so the rainy season can still be a good time to visit Belize; June and July’s sporadic showers create verdant landscapes, great for spotting abundant wildlife in Mountain Pine Ridge and August typically sees a lull in rainfall.

Month by Month Climate Guide

Overall Belize has a tropical climate, however, it does experience distinct seasons with different weather conditions. The changes in rainfall and temperature alter the landscapes and the opportunities for adventure. Below we’ve outlined the climate, giving you the average high and average low temperatures along with the rainfall, month by month, so that you know what to expect throughout the year.

In January, there’s a small chance of a light shower and the northern winds blow through the country, keeping temperatures at around 25°C (80°F) on the coast. For inland areas, such as the Cayo District, temperatures don’t tend to climb higher than about 26°C (80°F).

February is the best time to visit Belize for underwater activities like snorkelling and diving. Temperatures peak around 26°C (79°F) with a low of 22°C (73°F) at the coast. The ocean averages an enjoyable 26°C (80°F), meaning it is always a great time for a swim. Inland in places like Mountain Pine Ridge it can get quite hot, with temperatures rising to 28°C (84°F).

Temperatures start to soar in March due to Belize’s lack of rainfall. The coast remains pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 23°C (77°F) to 26°C (79°F). Humidity and heat make the temperatures rise to highs of 31°C (88°F).

Temperatures continue to rise in April, making it one of the hottest months in Belize. That being said, it is possible to be cooled down by a light shower here and there. The coast is warm at this time of the year, with temperatures averaging a high of 27°C (82°F). However, the coastal winds pick up around now.

Like April, May is also one of the hottest months in Belize. On the mainland, temperatures peak around 32°C (91°F), and the rain begins to fall. However at this stage in the season, the rains are typically light morning showers or exhilarating thunderstorms at night. The coast is cooler, with temperatures reaching no higher than 27°C (82°F).

June marks the beginning of the wet season in Belize. The average high temperature inland hovers at around (31°C) 88°F, while on the coast they stay cooler at around 28°C (84°F). There are constant winds and brief showers at this time of year. Due to the rain, fauna and food sources grow, making June a great month to spot wildlife.

July ramps up the wet season, with mornings featuring heavy showers and thunderstorms lighting up the sky at night. However there is still great visibility in the water, which is a welcome reprieve from high temperatures of 88°F (31°C) of inland places like Orange Walk.

August welcomes a brief comeback for the dry season, with the coast averaging a high of 28°C (84°F). Inland it's somewhat hotter, with an average peak of around 32°C (90°F). Although the rainfall is lower now, there can still be a risk of hurricanes and tropical storms in August.

Seated firmly in the hurricane season, September experiences more rain than August. Temperatures have cooled down slightly now, with it reaching around 28°C (84°F) on the coast and 31°C (88°F) inland.

October is the rainiest month in Belize, with an average of 254 millimetres falling throughout the month. Temperatures on the coast reach highs of 27°C (82°F), with inland being mildly hotter with highs of 28°C (84°F). Storms hit Belize frequently, lasting up to a few days at a time.

Belize receives less rain in November, averaging a fall of 203 millimetres. Temperatures at the coast peak at around 26°C (80°F), whilst inland they are slightly higher at 27°C (82°F). The storms become less frequent, allowing the sun to shine throughout most of the day.

Although the start of December starts out wet, by the end of the month it’s typically pleasant and dry, with temperatures reaching 27°C (81°F) inland. December marks the end of the hurricane season in Belize, allowing the coastal regions, such as Placencia, to keep cool at 26°C (79°F).

When is hurricane season in Belize?

Hurricane season in Belize lasts from August to October. Many hotels close for maintenance during September and October when the most intense storms can hit, limiting travel options and marking the low season. If you want to experience underwater activities we recommend avoiding these months due to poor visibility and choppy waters.

The Best Things to Do in Belize by Season

While Belize is known for its breathtaking white beaches and crystal-clear blue waters, it offers a myriad of alternative activities too. Deciding what to do in Belize depends on your personal interests, but it’s also crucial to consider seasonality, as different weather conditions are better for different activities.

So, whether you’re dreaming of exploring ancient Mayan ruins, snorkeling in the stunning Belize Barrier Reef, or simply relaxing on pristine white-sand beaches, join us as we discover the best time to travel to Belize.

Climate in Belize

Belize experiences a tropical climate characterized by two main seasons: the wet season and the dry season. The wet season typically runs from June to November, while the dry season spans from December to May. However, it’s important to note that Belize’s climate can vary slightly depending on the region.

During the wet season, Belize receives a significant amount of rainfall, particularly in the form of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. This lush period is ideal for nature enthusiasts looking to witness the vibrant flora and fauna that thrive in the rainforest. It’s also worth noting that the wet season coincides with hurricane season in the Caribbean, so travelers should stay informed about any potential weather disturbances.

On the other hand, the dry season in Belize is characterized by lower humidity levels and minimal rainfall. This is considered the peak tourist season, as visitors flock to Belize to bask in the warm sunshine and enjoy outdoor activities such as snorkeling, diving, and exploring the ancient Mayan ruins. The dry season also offers excellent visibility for underwater adventures, as the calm waters provide optimal conditions.

In terms of temperature, Belize remains relatively consistent throughout the year. Average temperatures hover around 80°F (27°C), with slightly cooler temperatures in the evenings. The coastal regions tend to experience slightly higher temperatures than the inland areas, thanks to the cooling effect of the Caribbean Sea.

Overall, it’s important to be prepared for both rainy and dry conditions when traveling to Belize. Packing lightweight, breathable clothing, along with a raincoat or umbrella, is advisable to ensure comfort and enjoyment during your stay.

Peak Tourist Season

The peak tourist season in Belize falls during the dry season, which runs from December to May. This is when travelers from around the world flock to Belize to escape the winter cold and indulge in the country’s natural beauty and outdoor activities.

During the peak tourist season, the weather in Belize is generally sunny and dry, making it the perfect time to explore the stunning Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts will be in awe of the crystal-clear waters, teeming with colorful marine life.

This period also offers fantastic opportunities to explore the country’s lush rainforests and wildlife reserves. Embark on thrilling jungle treks, bird-watching adventures, or even spot jaguars in the wild at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.

It’s worth noting that the peak tourist season coincides with the winter holidays and school vacations in many countries. As a result, popular tourist destinations in Belize, such as Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, can get quite crowded during this time. It’s advisable to book accommodation and activities in advance to secure your desired itinerary.

Additionally, with the high demand during this season, prices for flights, accommodations, and activities tend to be at their highest. It’s important to plan your budget accordingly and be ready for higher expenses during your trip.

While the peak tourist season can bring larger crowds and higher costs, it also offers an electrifying atmosphere and a chance to mingle with fellow travelers from around the world. The vibrant energy, combined with the plethora of activities and attractions available, makes the peak tourist season an unforgettable time to experience the best of what Belize has to offer.

Shoulder Season

The shoulder season in Belize refers to the transition periods between the peak tourist season and the low tourist season. These seasons, which typically occur in late spring and early fall, offer a pleasant middle ground for travelers seeking to avoid the crowds while still enjoying favorable weather conditions.

During the shoulder season, which approximately runs from May to June and September to November, visitors can experience a mix of sunny days and occasional rainfall. The temperatures are still warm, ranging from the mid-70s°F (mid-20s°C) to the low 80s°F (high 20s°C), making it comfortable for outdoor activities and exploration.

One of the main advantages of traveling during the shoulder season is the reduced number of tourists. This means that popular tourist sites and attractions are less crowded, allowing for a more intimate and immersive experience. You’ll have the chance to explore ancient Mayan ruins, like Xunantunich or Caracol, at your own pace and without the crowds.

Furthermore, accommodations, flights, and tours tend to be more affordable during the shoulder season, making it an excellent time for budget-conscious travelers. Many hotels and resorts offer discounted rates or special promotions, allowing you to enjoy a more cost-effective trip to Belize.

While the shoulder season does come with the possibility of occasional rainfall, it’s typically limited to short showers or passing storms. This presents a unique opportunity to witness the natural beauty of Belize in full bloom, with vibrant flora and fauna thriving after the rain.

It’s important to note that, due to the transition nature of the shoulder season, some attractions and businesses may have reduced operating hours or limited availability. It’s recommended to check ahead and plan accordingly to avoid any disappointments.

In summary, the shoulder season in Belize offers a fantastic compromise between the peak tourist season and the low tourist season. With pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and more affordable prices, it’s an ideal time to explore the country’s natural wonders, immerse yourself in the culture, and create unforgettable memories without breaking the bank.

Low Tourist Season

The low tourist season in Belize occurs during the wet season, which spans from June to November. This period is characterized by increased rainfall and lower visitor numbers, making it the perfect time for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience.

The low tourist season offers a unique opportunity to explore Belize in a more tranquil and secluded way. With fewer crowds, you can fully immerse yourself in the country’s natural wonders, from the stunning rainforests to the captivating Maya archaeological sites.

While the wet season brings more rain, it’s important to note that the showers are typically short-lived and interspersed with periods of sunshine. This provides the perfect conditions for experiencing activities such as cave tubing, jungle hikes, and bird-watching, as the rainforest comes alive during this time.

One of the major advantages of traveling during the low tourist season is the affordability. Accommodation rates and flight prices tend to be significantly lower compared to the peak tourist season, allowing you to stretch your budget further and splurge on exciting experiences like snorkeling in the famous Blue Hole or exploring the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave.

It’s important to keep in mind that some tourist facilities and attractions may have reduced operating hours or limited availability during this time. However, the upside is that you can often enjoy more personalized and attentive service, as establishments are not as crowded.

Another aspect to consider during the low tourist season is the possibility of encountering tropical storms or hurricanes. Belize is located in the hurricane belt, and although the risk is relatively low, it’s wise to keep an eye on the weather forecast and travel insurance coverage.

If you don’t mind a bit of rain and are looking for a more affordable and uncrowded experience, the low tourist season in Belize can be a wonderful time to explore the country’s natural beauty, immerse yourself in its rich culture, and engage in unique adventures.

Weather Considerations

When planning your trip to Belize, it’s essential to consider the weather patterns to optimize your travel experience. While Belize enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, there are specific weather considerations to keep in mind.

The wet season, which runs from June to November, brings increased rainfall to Belize. Although rain showers can be frequent, they often occur in short bursts, leaving plenty of time for outdoor activities. It’s advisable to pack a lightweight raincoat or umbrella to stay prepared. Additionally, be aware that the wet season also overlaps with the hurricane season in the Caribbean, so it’s wise to stay informed about any potential weather situations.

The dry season, on the other hand, from December to May, is characterized by minimal rainfall and lower humidity levels. This is the peak tourist season in Belize, when visitors can enjoy abundant sunshine and perfect beach weather. It’s important to note that the dry season also coincides with the winter holidays and school vacations, resulting in larger crowds and higher prices.

Regardless of the season, it’s recommended to pack lightweight, breathable clothing to stay comfortable in the tropical climate of Belize. Don’t forget essentials such as sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.

While Belize’s climate is generally warm and pleasant, there are regional variations to consider. Coastal areas tend to have slightly higher temperatures than inland regions due to the moderating influence of the Caribbean Sea. In the interior, temperatures may be slightly cooler, especially in higher elevation areas such as the Maya Mountains.

Lastly, be aware of the “dry reef phenomenon” that occurs in Belize during certain lunar phases. With the lack of rainfall during the dry season, the marine ecosystem of the Belize Barrier Reef can experience stress. It is a period when corals may appear dry or bleached due to the absence of freshwater runoff. This is a natural occurrence and does not indicate permanent damage to the reef.

By taking into account the weather considerations, you can plan your activities and pack accordingly to fully enjoy your time in Belize, whether you’re exploring the rainforests, lounging on the beaches, or engaging in underwater adventures.

Festivals and Events

Belize is a country that loves to celebrate, and there are numerous festivals and events throughout the year that showcase the culture, traditions, and vibrant spirit of its people. Attending one of these festivals can be a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the local customs and create unforgettable memories during your trip.

One of the most popular festivals in Belize is the September Celebrations, which commemorate Belize’s independence from British rule. September is a month-long celebration filled with parades, street parties, live music, dancing, and delicious local cuisine. The festivities culminate on September 21st, Belize’s Independence Day, with a grand parade and fireworks.

The Lobster Festival is another highly anticipated event in Belize, particularly for seafood enthusiasts. Held annually in June, this three-day festival celebrates Belize’s abundant lobster population with mouthwatering culinary creations, live music, and beach parties. If you’re a fan of seafood, this is definitely a festival you won’t want to miss.

The Garifuna Settlement Day, celebrated on November 19th, is a significant cultural event that honors the arrival of the Garifuna people to Belize. It features traditional dances, drumming, storytelling, delicious Garifuna cuisine, and reenactments of their historical arrival on dugout canoes. This is an excellent opportunity to experience the vibrant Garifuna culture firsthand.

Belize also hosts a variety of other cultural and music festivals throughout the year. The Belize International Film Festival showcases local and international films, while the Belize Jazz Festival brings together acclaimed jazz musicians for a series of captivating performances. The Chocolate Festival of Belize celebrates the country’s cacao heritage with chocolate tastings, workshops, and the crowning of the “Miss Chocolate” pageant.

It’s important to note that festival dates may vary from year to year, so it’s advisable to check the specific dates and plan your trip accordingly. Attending these festivals not only allows you to experience the vibrant cultural fabric of Belize but also provides the opportunity to engage with locals, try traditional foods, and dance to the rhythm of Belizean music.

Whether you’re a music lover, a foodie, or simply enjoy immersing yourself in local traditions, attending one of Belize’s festivals and events can add an extra layer of excitement and delight to your travel experience.

Budget Considerations

When planning a trip to Belize, it’s important to consider your budget to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable experience. While Belize offers a range of options for all budgets, it’s helpful to understand the main factors that may impact your expenses.

Accommodation prices in Belize can vary significantly depending on the location and the time of year. During the peak tourist season, which falls between December and May, prices for hotels and resorts tend to be higher due to the increased demand. If you’re traveling on a tight budget, consider visiting during the shoulder or low tourist season when accommodations often offer discounted rates.

Transportation costs also need to be factored into your budget. Domestic flights within Belize can be relatively expensive, especially during peak travel times. An alternative option is to use public buses or shared shuttles, which are generally more affordable. Additionally, consider renting a car if you plan to explore different regions of the country independently.

Food and dining expenses can vary depending on your preferences. Eating at local street stalls and small family-owned restaurants can be a budget-friendly option to try Belizean cuisine. In general, food prices are reasonable, especially if you opt for local dishes and ingredients. However, dining at upscale restaurants or resorts may come with higher price tags.

Activities and excursions in Belize can range in price depending on the type of experience you’re seeking. Popular activities like snorkeling, diving, and exploring Mayan ruins may have entrance fees or require the assistance of a guide, which can add to your expenses. Planning ahead and comparing prices between different tour operators can help you find the best deals.

It’s worth noting that Belize has a sales tax of 12.5%. This tax is often already included in the prices displayed, but it’s important to keep this in mind when budgeting for your trip.

Lastly, consider setting aside some extra funds for unexpected expenses or souvenirs you may want to bring back home. It’s always wise to have a buffer in your budget to account for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise during your trip.

By carefully considering these budget considerations and planning accordingly, you can enjoy an amazing trip to Belize without breaking the bank. Whether you’re looking for budget-friendly options or willing to splurge on luxurious experiences, Belize offers something for every traveler’s budget.

Choosing the best time to travel to Belize can greatly enhance your experience in this stunning Central American country. Whether you prefer to bask in the warm sunshine of the dry season or immerse yourself in the lush landscapes of the wet season, Belize offers diverse opportunities for adventure, relaxation, and cultural exploration.

During the peak tourist season, from December to May, you can enjoy ideal beach weather, explore breathtaking coral reefs, and immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of festivals and events. However, it’s important to note that this period also brings larger crowds and higher prices.

The shoulder season, which encompasses the transition periods between the peak and low tourist seasons, offers a delightful compromise. With pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and more affordable prices, this time allows you to explore Belize’s natural wonders and delve into its cultural heritage.

The low tourist season, during the wet season from June to November, presents a unique experience for those looking for a quieter, more adventurous getaway. While there may be more rainfall, this is offset by lower prices, uncrowded attractions, and the chance to witness the country’s nature in full bloom.

When planning your trip, take into account the weather patterns, consider attending festivals and events to immerse yourself in the local culture, and budget accordingly to make the most of your time in Belize. Whether you’re exploring ancient Mayan ruins, snorkeling in turquoise waters, or trekking through the rainforest, Belize offers a wealth of unforgettable experiences.

No matter which season you choose to travel, the captivating beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality of Belize will leave you with memories to treasure. So pack your bags, embrace the Caribbean vibes, and get ready for an incredible adventure in vibrant Belize.

the Best Time to Visit Belize 1

When’s the Best Time to Visit Belize?

As Belize lands on more travelers’ radars, one of the most frequently asked questions that precede buying that flight ticket is, unsurprisingly: When’s the best time to go to Belize? Luckily, since Belize sits right on top of the equator, it (gratefully) only comprises two seasons: dry and wet. This makes it easier to choose when to take a Belize vacation. The rainy season stretches from June to November , but this does not mean it’s not advisable to visit during this time. In fact, the summer months are some of our most popular as this is when most large festivals take place, such as the Lobster Festivals. It’s also when hotels and tour operators offer major discounts, so if this is a deciding factor in your trip planning then this time might be a match for you. If you don’t mind switching a cave tubing tour for a traditional Maya cooking class when a little rain decides to drop by, then by all means visit Belize during the least touristy months.

From December to March/April is when our high season is in full swing. During this time the weather is in that Goldilocks-perfect temperature, with December usually packing in a cold front going as low as 55°F at night. There are virtually no rains during this time, which is naturally very appealing to visitors. The country is alive with the holiday spirit, with events such as Boat Lighting Parade in San Pedro and cultural holiday dances being performed throughout the country a sin to miss. Not to mention welcoming the New Year in Belize at an island with the sunrise rising over the water a surefire sign that your year is off to a great start.

In conclusion, the best time to visit Belize all depends on what you would like to do during your vacation. Sure, saying “it’s always a good time to visit Belize” is an old cliché, but it rings true when there are no major weather changes to expect and there is plenty to do throughout the year.

The Best Time to Visit Belize

The Central American country of Belize is great to visit year-round, with warm weather one expects from the tropics and average temperatures around 80 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. There are two major seasons in Belize: a dry season, which starts in December and goes through March, and a wet season, which picks up in April and continues to linger until the end of November. And while many people prefer to head to Belize when the rains have subsided, a heavy calendar of cultural events and activities draws in tourists throughout the year. Here's when to visit Belize, depending on your interests.

March – May

Straddling the transition from the sunny dry season to the cloudier wet season, the months of March through May are great for visiting Belize. With the exception of the week around Easter, this time of year gets fewer crowds than the big Christmas to New Years season. However, the real reason to head to Belize this time of year is for the fantastic diving opportunities. April, May, and June traditionally have the best visibility, though April and May are particularly hot with divers due to the presence of enormous whale sharks, especially around the Gladden Spit. If you want to increase your chances of interacting with the gigantic underwater creatures, visit around the full moon, when they are most active.

June – August

Although some of Belize’s best attractions for foodies take place in May — including the annual Chocolate Festival (which opens with a “wine and chocolate night”), June is really where it’s at, as it marks the beginning of lobster season. There are three major lobster festivals during the month, notably the San Pedro Lobsterfest, the Placencia Lobsterfest, and the Caye Caulker Lobster Festival, complete with its “Miss Lobster” pageant. And if you’ve got time, stick around until July when the Belize Tourism Board runs its annual Taste of Belize culinary competition.

July is also a good month for those who want to feel the pulse of contemporary Belizean culture at Belize Fashion Week. Benque Viejo del Carmen in the Cayo District also hosts the annual Benque Festival, which celebrates Mayan and Mestizo cultures. San Pedro on Ambergris Caye has a similar celebration in August, in which visitors from around the Mayan world descend on the town to showcase dance, music, and food from their respective regions.

September – December

If you’re into partying it up , February is a great time to visit Belize. Like many countries in the Caribbean region, Belize has a vibrant Carnival culture, and while there is a San Pedro Carnival held every year in the days leading up to Mardi Gras, the biggest celebrations are held in September in Belize City , when costumed performers and musicians crowd into the streets for much revelry. September is also Belize’s “Celebration Month,” with festivities honoring two major holidays: the Battle of St. George’s Caye Day (September 10), named for the battle that ultimately gave Britain — not Spain — colonial control over Belize. Later in the month, Independence Day (September 21) creates even more fanfare, with lots of partying to boot.

October’s a bit of a quieter month, while things pick up again in November with the Belize International Film Festival, featuring films from throughout the region. November 19 marks Garifuna Settlement Day, during which Caribbean Garifuna communities re-enact their community’s first arrival into the country in 1832. There are plenty of Christmas and New Year’s celebrations in December, including a boat lighting parade featuring gloriously illuminated boats that sail from Boca del Rio to the Coconuts Caribbean Hotel in San Pedro.

Best Time To Visit Belize: A Guide To The Ideal Season for Travel

Belize is a popular travel destination known for its lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and the world-famous Barrier Reef. The country boasts a tropical climate, making it an ideal destination for travelers looking to escape the cold winter months. However, when is the best time to visit Belize?

Lush rainforest, vibrant coral reefs, and clear blue waters, with a bright sun shining overhead and a gentle breeze rustling the palm trees

The peak tourist season in Belize runs from late November to mid-May, during the country’s dry season. During this time, visitors can expect sunny skies, warm temperatures, and plenty of outdoor activities. However, prices for accommodations and activities are higher during this time, and crowds can be a challenge to navigate.

While the dry season may be the most popular time to visit Belize, the wet season (June to October) offers a unique experience for travelers looking to avoid crowds and save money. Although there may be more rain, the country’s lush vegetation is at its most vibrant during this time, and visitors can still enjoy plenty of outdoor activities. Ultimately, the best time to visit Belize depends on your travel goals and preferences.

Climate and Seasons

10 Best Places To Visit In Belize In 2024

B elize is a magnificent country tucked between Mexico and Guatemala, with a long stretch of coastline along the Caribbean Sea. We spent a week in Belize during our Central America backpacking trip and could’ve easily stayed much longer!

I was blown away by the kindness of the local people and their vibrant energy. Not to mention the stunning beaches and relaxed island lifestyles. I loved nature and wildlife and just how welcoming Belize felt.

Belize is not only a perfect destination to visit on its own and spend a week or two exploring but you could also easily combine it with a longer trip from Mexico to Guatemala for example, thanks to its relatively small size.

With so many incredible places to visit in Belize, this list will give you all of the best options to choose the perfect destinations for you.

Best Places To Visit In Belize

Belize may be a small country but there are so many great places in this beautiful country.

Here are the top 10 best places to visit in Belize.

1 – Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is a small island with a very relaxed and laid-back vibe . In fact, it is more correct to describe it as 2 islands since it was hit by a hurricane in 1961 and torn in two. Naturally, the locals took this in their stride and this narrow channel of sea between the 2 islands is now named ‘The Split’.

The Split is a popular place to hang out and enjoy the beautiful clear waters. There is a great beach bar by the split called the Lazy Lizard, where I highly recommend spending an afternoon.

Caye Caulker is well known for being a backpacker hub , especially around the main town. You will find plenty of hostels and bars to meet fellow travelers. We loved the beachside coffee shack called Ice & Beans. They do great coffee and have hammocks on the beach so you can swing while you sip.

If you are looking for something a little more luxurious, on the other side of The Split you will find more resor t s and hotels that are geared more toward families visiting Belize with kids .

2 – Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is one of the best Caribbean islands for families . The largest of the Belizean islands, and one of the most popular places to visit in Belize, Ambergris Caye is around 25 miles long but no wider than 1 mile .

The main town is San Pedro, towards the south of the island. There are a lot of things to do in San Pedro , as it is a bustling hub with a much more authentic feel than Caye Caulker.

In this town, you will find more local people going about their day-to-day lives than you will tourists.

We stayed at the Sandbar Beachfront Hostel and this was one of the best hostels we found in Central America . Located right on the beach they have a private pier over the water, a great pool and the restaurant makes the best pizzas!

If you head further north along Ambergris Caye you will find many quiet and stunning beaches with breathtaking turquoise waters. From the shores of the island, you can even see the Barrier Reef that runs alongside Belize.

3 – San Ignacio

Found just a short drive from the Belize-Guatemala border is the town of San Ignacio. Located in far western Belize , it is often used as a stopover by travelers heading from one country to the other. But the town of San Ignacio actually has an awful lot to offer.

San Ignacio is a small town and can be explored on foot , you can take a stroll along the river or head to the big local market for some fresh fruit or homemade local delicacies.

San Ignacio has a lot to do , and is a great place to base yourself if you want to visit the ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave) or explore some of the other places mentioned on this list such as Caracol or Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

San Ignacio is also home to its very own Mayan Ruins site called Cahal Pech .

Cahal Pech is only $5 USD to enter and when we visited we had the entire site to ourselves for hours! You are even allowed to climb the Pyramids still at this site.

If you are heading from Belize to Guatemala, it is worth spending a couple of days in San Ignacio before moving on to Guatemala .

4 – Hopkins

Hopkins is a quiet and peaceful beach village located in the south of the country. It is steadily growing in popularity among travelers but this south Belize gem still maintains its authentic nature, food and culture . This is what visitors love most about Hopkins.

You can enjoy the quiet, pristine beaches in peace and get a real experience of the way of life in this area. One of the most special things to do while in Hopkins is experience the Garifuna drumming . An art that is only practiced in a handful of places still, so it is not to be missed.

The Garifuna people are of mixed Afro-Caribbean descent. They immigrated from the island of Saint Vincent to Belize, settling primarily in the coastal areas, like Hopkins, where Garifuna culture is a celebrated part of the visitor experience.

Hopkins is also the best place to stay if you want to explore the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Reserve . This is one of the only Jaguar reserves in the world.

You can join a tour to hike through the reserve , swimming in beautiful waterfalls as you keep your eyes peeled for a rare glimpse of a Jaguar.

5 – Belize City

If you are flying directly to Belize then you will be landing in Belize City as this is the only international airport in the country . It then makes sense that you may want to spend a day or two exploring the country’s capital city.

There is a surprising amount of colonial history and architecture to be found throughout the city and the best way to experience it all is on a guided tour of the city . This way you will have a local guide who can explain more about what you are seeing as well as advising on the safe areas to stick to around the city.

Some more great spots to have on your itinerary in Belize City are the government buildings, St John’s Cathedral and the Museum of Belize.

Spend a day exploring these sites before you head out to the Cayes and you will really be able to appreciate the contrast between city and island life.

6 – The Blue Hole

Perhaps one of the most iconic and well-known places to visit in Belize is the magnificent Blue Hole . This incredibly unique sinkhole is a natural wonder that is located around 43 miles off the coast of Belize.

It is possible to experience the Blue Hole by boat or from above in a helicopter or small plane. Boat trips are best from Ambergris Caye as this is closer to the hole and the journey will be 3-4 hours each way.

Flights also leave from the small airstrip in San Pedro each day to take tourists on an hour-long flight over the hole .

It is also known to be one of the most sought-after dive sites in the world , drawing experienced divers from far and wide to experience its mysterious depths.

7 – Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley

Belize is located right next to the second-largest barrier reef in the world . If you are an ocean lover then no trip to Belize should be complete without taking a diving or snorkeling trip out to Hol Chan Marine Reserve on the Belize Barrier Reef.

The reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising seven protected areas, including the Blue Hole, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and stretching as far south as the South Water Caye Marine Reserve and Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve, located off the shores of Placencia.

We did a combination of snorkeling and diving and were blown away. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is home to hundreds of colorful fish, rays and sea turtles and the water visibility is great.

Shark Ray Alley is an incredible spot that is now home to hundreds of friendly nurse sharks and rays. You can jump right in and swim amongst them. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. These waters are also home to Manatees .

We were lucky enough to see one and they are much larger than we expected.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve can be accessed by boat from either Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker .

8 – Caracol Mayan Ruins

Belize is known for its impressive Mayan ruins. The ancient Mayan archeological site of Caracol is pretty special.

It’s no secret that there are hundreds of Maya sites in Belize , as well as sprinkled across Mexico and Guatemala. While there are a few more famous than Caracol, like Tikal in Guatemala and Chichén Itzá in Mexico, Caracol is seriously underrated.

This impressive site is buried deep within the Belize jungles, 2 hours from the nearest town and no public transport goes there. Making this one of the most off-the-beaten-path places to visit in Belize.

You will need to join a tour or rent a 4×4 to get there as there is an hour of driving off road before you reach the site.

Caracol was once one of the major Maya hubs, covering an area of 55 square miles. Now the main pyramids have been uncovered and tower over the jungle.

9 – Placencia

Placencia is the most southern beach destination on this list, located a little further south along the coast from Hopkins.

This sleepy fishing village is slowly becoming a favorite among travelers thanks to its small and charming main street, lack of traffic and incredible beaches.

Placencia is the name of the village that sits at the end of the 16 mile-long Placencia Peninsula. The narrow strip of land is only half a mile wide at its widest point making it very much feel like a remote caye.

Luckily for us, it has all the vibes of a gorgeous caye but we can drive there. It is still largely undeveloped and mostly inhabited by locals. You will find no high rises here.

Each morning the local fishermen still head out in their boats around the peninsula and during the summer months, this is an ideal spot to head out on a snorkeling tour find Whale sharks.

10 – Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is a unique landscape in Belize. You won’t find the iconic pine trees in the other jungles across the country.

This entrance to the reserve is around a 45-minute drive from San Ignacio . It is possible to drive yourself however the roads inside the reserve can get treacherous after rainfall. The best way to visit the pine forest reserve is on a guided tour .

A tour can take you to multiple spots in a day so you make the most out of your time there. The reserve is home to beautiful towering waterfalls as well as smaller rock pools like Rio On Pools which are perfect for swimming.

It is also where you can find the impressive Rio Frio cave . An enormous cave that leads to a huge underground river system. It is well worth a trip to this wonderful nature spot if you enjoy time in the great outdoors.

Best Places To Visit In Belize FAQs

If you’re planning a trip to any of the best places to visit in Belize, you likely have some other questions about this Central American destination.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Belize.

What part of Belize is best to stay in?

If you are looking for beautiful beaches and to meet lots of fellow travelers then you should stay on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. The water around the cayes is shallow and calm, which is ideal if visiting on a Belize family vacation .

If you want beaches but peace and quiet then you should stay along the beaches in the south of the country. If you are looking to experience the jungles and Mayan ruins then you should stay in San Ignacio.

The jungles around San Ignacio are also home to some beautiful eco-lodges that are great for a peaceful escape.

How long do you need in Belize?

I would recommend spending no less than one week in Belize to get the most out of your time there.

Ten days or more would be the ideal amount of time if you want to experience the islands and the coastal area along the mainland, as well as see the Mayan ruins and the jungles in western Belize.

If you have less than a week then I recommend spending your time on the Cayes and not moving around too much.

When is the best time of year to visit Belize?

The best time to visit Belize is during the dry season from January to May. This is when you will have the best temperatures and the least rainfall.

From August to December there is a low risk of hurricanes so always check before you travel.

Is Belize safe to visit?

Belize is generally known to be a safe country for tourists to visit. Belize City has a bit of a reputation for being unsafe in certain areas but crime is rarely directed towards tourists. If in doubt there are plenty of great group tours you can join to explore the city with a local who knows the area.

Regardless of where you visit, it is always best to leave your valuables at home and not wander around alone at night time.

Is Belize cheap or expensive?

Belize is not typically a budget travel destination. It is possible to find cheaper hostel beds, take public buses and eat street food. However, there are far more luxury resorts and activities in Belize which are usually pretty expensive.
