Char's Has the Blues is set to reopen as a neighborhood bar: 'If the walls could talk'

T here’s a sign outside the cozy little Melrose District bar on Seventh Avenue that says “Respect the past” on one side and “Embrace the future” on the other.

For 35 years, that building was a cherished part of Phoenix culture, hosting R&B, blues, soul and funk acts as  Char’s Has the Blues .

The scene inside what should have been the living room at 4631 N. Seventh Ave. was the stuff of local legends with its crowded parquet dance floor inches from the live musicians throwing down.

In 2020, David Cameron and his business partner, San Diego-based real estate broker Peter Valleau, bought the business, changed the name to Char’s Live and  reopened as a nightclub, after major renovations, in February 2022 .

Things didn’t go as well for Cameron as it had for the previous owners in the venue’s glory days.

Cameron listed the business with HUB Commercial in November 2023.

In early March, Brandon Smith and Tommy Glynn purchased Char's from Cameron.

They’re hoping to open as Smith’s on 7 th Bar & Lounge within two weeks.  

“Once we get the fire department to come in, give us an inspection and sign off, that's probably the last thing that we're waiting on,” Smith says.

There are no plans to have live music.

“Neither of us had that background,” Smith says. "My background is running a bar. So it just wasn't in the cards for us to do that. That was actually the first question I asked when we toured the place because it wasn't something I ever envisioned myself doing or necessarily wanted to do. I was more about just having a nice chill vibe."

There were live bands at Seamus McCaffrey's in downtown Phoenix, where Smith tended bar for 15 years. And he's seen how that can drive the regulars away.

"We're trying to create more of a regulars kind of bar, if that makes sense," he says.

'We want to respect the building and everything that happened here'

Smith lives in the Melrose District’s Grandview neighborhood just west of Seventh Avenue.

He’d been looking to open a neighborhood bar when he saw Cameron’s listing.

“We just wanted to bring something to this side of the strip,” he says.

Although he’d never been to Char’s, Smith was familiar with its history and what it meant to local music culture.

"People definitely loved that place, especially when it was Char's Has the Blues," Smith says.

"We know it's special to a lot of people. That's where we get the whole 'respect the past' on our marquee. And then the other side, we have 'embrace the future.' All good things must come to an end at some point. We want to respect the building and everything that happened here, but put our own mark on it.”

Char's Live tried to keep that legacy alive and couldn't make a go of it.

"We feel like it already had a second opportunity," Smith says. So now we're looking at the building as a possible new history that we can create in a space that if the walls could talk, those voices would say really good things about what we're gonna do."

'I should do this for myself instead of doing it for someone else'

Glynn was born and raised in Phoenix but lives in Flagstaff, where he owns and operates NiMarco’s Pizza.

Smith has tended bar for more than 20 years in Phoenix. Since leaving Seamus McCaffrey’s, he’s spent more than three years at McKenzie’s Midtown Tavern and two years at Chambers Bohemian Whiskey Lounge & Kitchen, working part-time at both businesses.

“One day, I said, 'You know what? I should do this for myself instead of doing it for someone else,’” Smith says. “I found out this was for sale on Thanksgiving and messaged Tommy. I was like, 'Do you want to buy a bar with me? He kind of chuckled. A week later, we were touring it.”

As Glynn recalls the conversation, “Brandon kind of came to me for maybe some advice in the setup of the business phase. And I'm pretty good at turning a wrench. So I've been coming down here about half the week for the last few weeks to help him get things set up.”

They’ve been hustling to get it all done in time to open, but they had a head start.

“David Cameron and his partner did a great remodel,” Smith says. “We just felt it needed a few more things. Like, that patio was just horrendous. Now it's gonna be nice and clean and fresh with new patio furniture.”

Glynn says it’s been a smooth transition.

“David has been helpful and responsive, just helping us get our thing going,” Glynn says.

What to expect at Smith's on 7th Bar & Lounge

They’ve retiled what was once the parquet dance floor and installed a few more televisions.

They also got rid of the stage.

“We’re gonna put a dartboard there,” Smith says.

Two other dartboards will be going where the green room used to be.

They’re replacing the Kegerator with taps.

Eventually, they’ll have a karaoke room for private parties in the side lounge.

Smith’s on 7th will be open seven nights a week until 2 a.m. and won’t be serving food.

“They didn't really have it set up for a kitchen,” Smith says. “And there's enough restaurants in the Melrose area. We're not trying to compete with anyone in that sense. We just want to be a good place to stop and get a drink before you go to dinner somewhere or after you go to dinner somewhere."

It’s all about building a neighborhood spot where people will feel comfortable and welcome.

“I have a bunch of really good seasoned bartenders joining the team,” Smith says. “It's literally going to be something for everyone. We're gonna have cheap wells, nice cocktails, cheap beer, good beer. We're just trying to put our little mark on the bar scene. I figured I already have enough experience in it. Might as well give it a go.”

Military abortion travel policy that sparked Tuberville blockade was used 12 times in 7 months

A controversial military policy that allows service members to be reimbursed for travel if they or a family member have to go out of state for reproductive health care — including abortions — was used just 12 times from June to December last year, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin instituted the policy after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022 to ensure that troops who were assigned to states where abortions or other types of health care such as IVF treatment were no longer provided could still access those services.

The policy sparked outrage in some circles and led Alabama Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville to hold up hundreds of military promotions for months in a failed attempt to get the Pentagon to rescind it. Tuberville ultimately withdrew all of his holds in December.

The travel policy was used by service members or their dependents 12 times during that seven-month period at a cost of roughly $40,000, Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said Tuesday. The money covered lodging, meals and transportation for out-of-state travel to receive care.

The Pentagon said it did not have data on the first five months of 2023 because the services did not establish a way to track those uses when the policy was first implemented.

The policy does not cover the cost of abortions, and it’s not clear how many of the 12 trips were for abortions or other type of reproductive health care, such as IVF treatment. Singh said the Pentagon would not have a specific breakdown of what services were sought by the service members or their dependents due to medical privacy issues.

Under federal law, Defense Department medical facilities can perform abortions only when the life of the pregnant person is at risk or in cases of rape or incest, and those instances have been extremely rare. According to the department, there were 91 abortions performed in military medical facilities between 2016 and 2021.

For months, many of the military officers directly affected by Tuberville’s holds declined to speak out, for fear any comments would be seen as political. But as the pressures on their lives and the lives of the officers serving under them increased, they began to speak about how the uncertainty surrounding their next move was hurting not only them but their children and spouses.

They talked about how some of their most talented junior officers were going to get out of the military because of the instability they saw around them, and about how having to perform multiple roles because of so many vacancies was putting enormous additional stress on an already overworked military community.

The issue came to a head when U.S. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric Smith suffered a heart attack in October, just two days after he’d talked about the stress of the holds at a military conference. Smith fully returned to his duties only in the last few weeks.

New San Jose Sharks goalie Vitek Vanecek had a career year last season for the New Jersey Devils. He started 52 games, earned 33 wins, and finished with a .911 save percentage that was among the best in the NHL for goalies with a similar workload.

What happened with the Devils this season, though, is not Vanecek’s favorite topic.

“It’s a tough question. They changed a little bit (their) defense. It’s hard to answer this question,” said Vanecek, who the Sharks acquired on March 8 for Kaapo Kahkonen. “I don’t know. I don’t want to talk about New Jersey anymore. I’m in San Jose right now.”

Vanecek, who had a .890 save percentage in 32 games this season behind that leaky Devils defense, likely won’t play for the Sharks until the fall as he rehabilitates a lower-body injury he suffered in February.

Whenever Vanecek is healthy, though, he’ll be with a Sharks team that has to solve its own massive defensive issues.

Going into Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Blues, the Sharks had allowed a league-high 197 goals during 5-on-5 play and were the only NHL team that had allowed more than four goals per game overall.

Last season, the Sharks allowed 220 goals during 5-on-5 play, the third-worst mark in the NHL.

This isn’t necessarily just on the goalies. The Sharks, per moneypuck.com, had also allowed 192 high-danger shots against this season, more than any other team, and their goaltending has been better this season than it was last year.

Per NHL Edge stats, the Sharks spend 44.8% percent of the time at even-strength in the defensive end, well above the league average of 40.7%.

Before the Vanecek trade, San Jose’s team save percentage was .891, with both Kahkonen and Mackenzie Blackwood having solid underlying numbers. Last year, the team save percentage was .881, the worst in the NHL.

The Sharks want to take a step forward and have a better season next year, and it probably has to start with defense.

“Our biggest problem is really puck management in a lot of ways,” Sharks coach David Quinn said. “We have a hard time ending plays, which can really cause you trouble. Those are two areas, puck management, and ending plays, that can improve from our end of it and make us a better defensive team.”

The Sharks just finished a three-game homestand in which they were outscored 12-5 during 5-on-5 play. Still, before the wheels fell off, they were tied or leading in two of the three games going into the third period.

For the season, and before Saturday, the Sharks were only 14-12-6 when leading or tied after two periods. That speaks to puck management — and game management.

“They don’t beat themselves,” defenseman Jan Rutta said when asked what the Sharks can learn from recent opponents like the Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars.

“That’s been the case a lot of times this year when either we played a good game or we had leads, and a lot of times, we just find a way to beat ourselves. Those teams, they make you earn every win and every puck, and I think that’s something we can definitely take from them.”

Also, do the Sharks have the right personnel to make vast improvements on the defensive side?

Getting both center Logan Couture (groin) and defenseman Matt Benning (hip surgery) back healthy next season figures to help, although Couture’s ability to return to 100%, and stay there, is a bit of a question mark.

Better two-way mindsets from the forward group would not hurt, and it’s fair to say the Sharks want to get bigger and more physical on the back end.

Right now, on the blue line, Rutta, Benning, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Mario Ferraro, and Kyle Burroughs are all under contract for next season. Henry Thrun, Calen Addison, and Ty Emberson, all still finding their way, are set to become restricted free agents.

But after a season like this, it’s hard to imagine the group staying exactly the same.

So how much change will general manager Mike Grier make as he continues to reshape the roster, and how many of those moves will be made with team defense in mind?

“Defending is a mindset and a mentality,” Quinn said. “It’s learning how to defend at this level. Some guys have to defend differently than others. If you’re 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds, 180 pounds, you can’t defend the way a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder does.”

It would appear right now that the Sharks will have a goalie tandem of Vanecek and Blackwood for the start of next season. Quinn and his staff would like to see the goalie group take another step forward, but that will only be possible if the Sharks improve in their end.

“What I see is a rebuild, and for sure, it’s a hard thing,” Vanecek said of the Sharks. “But I think they’re going to go in good direction. It’s going to be good.”
