My party of 2 spent $98 at a Jungle Cruise-themed restaurant in Disney World, and it's the best table-service spot at Magic Kingdom

  • My party of two ate at Skipper Canteen, located in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom.
  • After applying my 10% annual discount, we spent $98 on our lunch.
  • It was a little expensive, but it was worth it for the high-quality food and lively atmosphere.

Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen is located in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Skipper Canteen is a table-service restaurant serving African-, Latin-, and Asian-inspired cuisine in Magic Kingdom.

It's located in the Adventureland area of the park across from the popular Jungle Cruise attraction , which serves as the inspiration for the restaurant.

The first thing I saw was the restaurant's comfortable outdoor waiting area.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

I appreciated that the restaurant had a covered outdoor waiting area with ceiling fans and a decent amount of seating. Although I didn't get to sit in the chairs, their cushions looked comfortable.

I made my way to the stand and checked in for our reservation.

We were almost immediately escorted inside to a different waiting room.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

I was surprised by how quickly we were brought inside.

Even if I have a reservation at a Disney World restaurant, I usually anticipate waiting between five and 15 minutes for my party to be called.

The indoor waiting area was vibrant, filled with bright colors and themed decor.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

I particularly enjoyed looking at the paintings on the wall. My favorite was the one of a Jungle Cruise skipper driving a boat.

The stained-glass windows in the waiting area were also beautiful and added to the overall aesthetic.

Once we were seated, our server provided us with a thorough overview of the menu.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

I found the restaurant's menu to be fairly extensive, so I was glad our server, Rena, was available to answer any questions I had.

I also liked that many of the dish descriptions were accompanied by images, which helped me decide what I was going to order.

Rena was one of the highlights of our meal. She was kind and attentive and even threw some jokes in — just like the skippers from Jungle Cruise .

Our drinks were accompanied by themed coasters.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The coasters may have been a tiny detail, but they stood out to me.

We ordered falafel for our first appetizer.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

When I saw falafel ($11) on the appetizer menu, I knew I wanted to order it right away.

The dish came with more than enough falafel for me and my sister as well as a hearty portion of house-made edamame hummus. Pumpkin seeds added some texture to the dish.

This was my first time having falafel at Disney World, and I thought it was very good and worth the price.

Our server told us about a secret-menu appetizer.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Our server told us that there was a pao de queijo appetizer ($12) on the bonus "Not so Secret Menu," and I wanted to try it for myself.

I'd never tasted anything quite like it before. The dish came with tiny balls of cheesy bread with cream cheese and chimichurri sauces on the side.

The little balls were very tasty. I tried both of the dipping sauces and preferred the cream cheese.

For my entrée, I ordered Skipper Dan's Dan Dan Noodles.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The noodle dish ($28) typically comes with crispy pork, but I swapped it out for tofu.

As someone who likes spicy food, these noodles hit the mark. Some of my first bites weren't that spicy, but as I made my way down to the chili sauce, I noticed the kick.

The restaurant had three dining rooms, and we were seated in the main Mess Hall.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The main room had a lot of natural light from the stained-glass windows as well as artificial light from the hanging chandeliers.

There were many photos, wooden sculptures, and decorations around the room's perimeter.

I almost missed a bookcase passageway.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

When I went to explore the rest of the restaurant, I almost missed the bookcase passageway connecting the Mess Hall to the S.E.A. Room. According to Disney Parks Blog , the story behind the "hidden" room is that it's a secret meeting location for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers.

Although the books were props (I tried pulling one off the shelf to see if they were real), it was a nice touch and played to the restaurant's explorer theme.

The S.E.A. Room provided guests with a more intimate dining experience.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

I took some time after I finished eating to check out the S.E.A. Room.

It was more elegant than the main dining room and was filled with a lot of detail. I especially loved the patterned carpet and wooden chairs.

I think I'd request a table in this room next time.

The Jungle Room was nice but my least favorite of the three.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

I thought the lighting fixtures with rainbow glass birds and the fine-china displays were very beautiful. But this room didn't seem as exciting as the others to me.

We paid about $98 to dine at Skipper Canteen, and it's now my favorite table-service restaurant in Magic Kingdom.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

For two adults, the bill came out to $81 after I applied my 10% annual-passholder discount. Once I added in the tip, it was $98.17.

I thought that was fairly pricey , but we ordered two appetizers, which isn't something I normally do at Disney World.

I usually skip the table-service restaurants at Magic Kingdom, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor of the food.

If you want to dine at a beautifully-decorated restaurant with flavorful food and amazing service, Skipper Canteen is an excellent choice if you're willing to spend the money.

Dining Inside Disney World’s Jungle Cruise Restaurant

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

No one ever accused Magic Kingdom of being Walt Disney World’s culinary epicenter. However, if you’re inspired to go deeper and deeper into Adventureland, or really just slightly beyond its entrance, you’ll find the park’s World Famous Jungle Cruise restaurant, Skipper Canteen.

We won’t bury the lede: Jungle Navigation Co. Skipper Canteen (its full name) is our favorite restaurant in Magic Kingdom–both the themed design and cuisine are fantastic. The interior is a treasure trove of obscure references to the history of Walt Disney World (and other parks) and the menu has something for everyone. Some might say it’s amazing…colossal…stupendous…the eighth ninth wonder of the (Walt Disney) world!

In a park with mostly crowd-pleasing dining options, Skipper Canteen has an exciting and ambitious menu. On top of that, it’s a fun place with amusing servers and exceptional atmosphere. Unlike many Walt Disney World fans, we do  not  think the other table service restaurants at Magic Kingdom are all overrated (to the contrary, I think pretty much all of them have some redeeming value), but Skipper Canteen is still the standout.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Before digging into the memorable meals you can have at Skipper Canteen, we’re going to start with a look at what makes this a Jungle Cruise restaurant. The backstory, humor, gags, details, and the many references.

The story of Skipper Canteen is essentially an outgrowth of one of Jungle Cruise’s old jokes. No, not that one about seeing water from behind ( nailed the delivery there!)– the one about that same waterfall’s namesake. Come to find out, Schweitzer Falls is named after Dr. Albert…Falls. (Fun fact: that doctor himself was named after a certain mystical primate…probably.)

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The Jungle Cruise restaurant was once a colonial mansion that the Falls family called home. The estate was home to Dr. Albert Falls, who founded the Jungle Navigation Company in 1911. It was also home to his wife and fellow adventurer Victoria Marie Falls, who assisted him in running the company and operating the Jungle Cruise.

The Fallses also used their manion as a meeting place for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (S.E.A.), a secret society with secret members and secreting meeting places all over the world, from Magic Kingdom to the Polynesian (Village Resort). It also has outposts in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Anaheim, Paris, and the ocean.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The Society of Explorers and Adventurers would assemble in a S.E.A-cret meeting-room built behind the manor’s library. Members of the S.E.A. who gathered in this gallery included Merriweather Adam Pleasure, Captain Mary Oceaneer, Chef Tandaji, Sango Shio, Luana Teixeira, the majestic monkey Albert Mystic, and his human, Lord Henry Mystic.

While her father was busy traveling on the “lecture circuit” in 1919, Dr. Falls’ eight-year-old granddaughter Alberta was sent to live in the estate. The Falls family recognized an adventurous spirit in Alberta that would be better allowed to blossom in the jungle, so the Falls estate became her new home where she could better learn the business.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

In 1927, Dr. Albert Falls met a fate common of S.E.A. members of the era: mysterious disappearance. This left Alberta Falls as the new president of the Jungle Navigation Co. But that wasn’t even the “and something goes terribly wrong” part.

The Falls family had fallen on tough times, economically speaking, so Alberta turned the estate into a mixed use facility. Alberta would also come to work as the Jungle Navigation Company’s manager, bookkeeper, and head-mechanic. (She didn’t have time to take on any more odd jobs, so laughing at her jokes was a must.)

It was Alberta Falls’ idea to transform the Jungle Navigation Co. headquarters into a restaurant to capitalize on all the hungry passengers disembarking the world-famous Jungle Cruise, And with that, Skipper Canteen was born.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The Jungle Cruise restaurant features three different dining rooms. The Crew Mess Hall–which isn’t even messy at all–is the largest one and the one that first greets guests as they enter Skipper Canteen.

Subjectively, this is the worst room at Skipper Canteen, and yet, it’s where most guests are seated. It’s easy to see why Walt Disney World fans have tepid opinions of the restaurant if this is where they’re seated. (Recently, we’ve noticed this room is completed filled before they even start using the better, smaller dining rooms.)

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The Crew Mess Hall features wall hangings of photos, documents, masks, native musical instruments, and expedition mementos gathered by the Jungle Cruise skippers on their expeditions. There are some fun visual gags and nods to other attractions and Imagineers, plus entire (amusing) documents to read.

Nevertheless, it’s the least interesting of the seating areas in Skipper Canteen. It’s cavernous and loud, a mess of people and noise, you might even say. The Crew Mess Hall is to Skipper Canteen what the Ballroom is to Be Our Guest Restaurant.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Then there’s the Jungle Cruise Room or Falls Family Parlor. As the second name suggests, this was the family parlor prior to conversion into a restaurant, and accordingly, it’s a more intimate location and features memorabilia culled from the Falls’ family archives.

The Jungle Cruise Room is highlighted by wood carvings of scenes made from wood on the Jungle Cruise docks, stained glass chandeliers in the form of the Enchanted Tiki Room’s birds, and other animal artifacts. Hence its other name, the Jungle Cruise Room. Purely subjective, but this dining room is excellent–far superior to the Crew Mess Hall.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The third and final dining room is located in the…wait for it… backside of bookcase!  (Okay, doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.) This room was actually the private meeting place for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, discussed above.

On the way in, you’ll spot several S.E.A. club fezzes on display in a glass case, which name checks those who attended secret meetings in the secret meeting room at Skippers Canteen.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The bookcase itself is a treasure trove of references and sly nods. Almost every single title ( maybe all of them!) is an Easter Egg. Whether it be the title or the author, these books almost all relate to something at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, the international parks, S.E.A. or Imagineering.

Fans will recognize hat tips to other offerings in Adventureland, including the Enchanted Tiki Room, Pirates of the Caribbean, Orange Bird at Sunshine Tree Terrace, Indiana Jones Adventure, and more. There are also more obscure references, including things like the extinct Tokyo DisneySea show, Legend of Mythica and other attractions in Hong Kong Disneyland and the Japan parks.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The Society of Explorers and Adventurers room features more display cases and a map of mythological creatures discovered by the members. Again, this contains even more references, this time to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Discovery Bay (the unbuilt land at Disneyland), World of Motion (the extinct EPCOT Center attraction), Imagineer Ward Kimball, and more that I probably missed.

Another highlight of the S.E.A. room is the butterfly booth, which features a wall of display cases with butterfly specimens that once belonged to Lillian Disney. On the other side of the room on the mantle above the fireplace, there’s a painting of Doctor Albert Falls discovering the Cambodian Temple seen in the Jungle Cruise attraction. Across from that, there’s a carved S.E.A. emblem.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Without question, the Society of Explorers and Adventurers room is the best of the bunch at Skipper Canteen.

While the Mess Hall definitely has the biggest Jungle Cruise vibes of the restaurant–and the most nods to its namesake attraction–the other two rooms are more intimate, quieter, and full of more creative and unique details. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of Skipper Canteen, but the Mess Hall feels a bit like a ‘prop shop’ that’s been piled high with Easter Eggs. The design of the other two rooms feels more purposeful, and their atmosphere is more elegant. That’s most pronounced in the S.E.A. room, but it’s also true in the Jungle Room.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Our final room to tour is a secret one.

You can tell by the sign in the photo above that says “restrooms through the ‘secret’ door.”

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Somehow, I always forget about the Skipper Canteen restrooms when updating my list of the Top 10 Toilets at Walt Disney World .

The tilework, elephant carvings, detail inside the sink, and privacy of the stalls is all top-notch. Truth be told, there are probably a lot of “secret” table service restaurant restrooms that have been “snubbed” from the list because I forget to take my camera into the bathroom (as one does) and capture photos.  Moving along…

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Even more backstory around the Falls family has been fleshed out thanks to the recent reimagining of Jungle Cruise. This added a lot of lore to the attraction, most of which is difficult to ascertain from the attraction itself. Much of it was published online, including a 1938 issue of The Daily Gnus about Alberta Falls and the World-Famous Jungle Cruise.

The article also introduces a number of new characters, including Victoria Marie Falls, Siobhan “Puffin” Murphy, Dr. Leonard Moss, Rosa Soto Dominguez, and S.E.A. Member Dr. Kon Chunosuke. If you’re interested in more info about these characters, check out the My Disney Experience app, which will give you detailed bios.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Imagineering has also been bolstering references between Adventureland and the Society of Explorers and Adventurers. That’s pretty obvious from the above, as Skipper Canteen was one of the first things at Walt Disney World to really embrace S.E.A. This has continued with Jungle Cruise, and the same is expected to occur with the treehouse at Disneyland.

This secret society of fictional and real-life explorers that began at Tokyo DisneySea two decades ago and has grown into a shared universe of characters and story points that has spread all over the world. The next stop is a Society of Explorers and Adventurers show that’s coming to Disney+ as the first project for the Magic Kingdom Universe.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Beyond the themed design and backstory, another fun aspect of Skipper Canteen is your server. Like the Jungle Cruise itself, this is highly variable–much more so than the ride. We’ve had some servers who have perfected the deadpan delivery, with performances on par with 50’s Prime Time Cafe that kept in character the entire meal.

On other occasions, we’ve had servers who are indistinguishable from any other regular restaurant at Magic Kingdom. I would say that the norm is somewhere in between, with a few Jungle Cruise jokes peppered into the meal and a bit of dry wit. Although the deliveries differ, I’d liken this to Whispering Canyon Cafe lite. Don’t go in expecting this to be a dry (humor) docked version of Jungle Cruise–let it be a pleasant surprise if it happens.

In typical Jungle Cruise fashion, there’s been a lot of talk up until now, but not much “action.” Since this is a look inside the Jungle Cruise  restaurant at Magic Kingdom, it only seems appropriate to share our most recent meal there. With that in mind, let’s turn to the menu at Skipper Canteen, and share some food photos and thoughts about what we ate, starting with appetizers…

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

For our first appetizer, we ordered the Veranda Fried Rice: Spicy Chili-Garlic Shrimp served over Pork Fried Rice with Eggs and Peas.

This is a returning dish for Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary. As the name sort of suggests, it was served at the Adventureland Veranda Restaurant, which was located in the same location in Magic Kingdom as Skipper Canteen. Veranda Restaurant was an opening day original, operating from October 1, 1971 until 1994.

For a couple of decades, it was used for special events and character meet & greets (we have fond memories of the Country Bears appearing here during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in the 2000s) before opening as Skipper Canteen in 2015. Time flies.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

An appetizer making a comeback from a location that closed nearly 3 decades ago should tell you everything you need to know. I do not recall the Veranda Restaurant in the least, and yet, I’ve heard about the Veranda Fried Rice time and time again in the years since. It has become the stuff of legend, and I assumed it could not possibly live up to the hype.

And yet, it absolutely does. The fried rice has a rich salty and savory flavor bordering on umami territory. The shrimp are plump and delicious, and everything is properly seasoned with a medley of garlic, chili, teriyaki, and who knows what else. I have no issue whatsoever with Harmonious and Disney Enchantment glowing away forever in 2023, but this had better stick around. It’s far and away the best appetizer at Skipper Canteen–maybe all of Magic Kingdom. Highly recommended, and ordering this technically might count as community service, since popularity makes it more likely to stick around.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

We opted for the Orinoco Ida’s Cachapas (And you thought our jokes were corny!), consisting of House-made Corn Pancakes, Beer-braised Pork, Roasted Corn, Fresno Pepper Salsa, and Avocado Cream.

I’m pretty sure this has been around for several years–perhaps since Skipper Canteen opened. Yet, to my knowledge, we’ve never ordered it. We usually only order one appetizer–the Falls Family Falafel. That’s Sarah’s favorite appetizer in Magic Kingdom.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

This was really good, and a nice refreshing contrast to the Veranda Fried Rice. Almost every ingredient here tasted fresh and light, save for the pork. The meat was savory and flavorful, balancing out the dish and giving it a robust quality.

If you’re looking for something more unique and interesting, this is right up there with the Falls Family Falafel. I don’t think it’s nearly as good as the Veranda Fried Rice, but that’s comfort food and this is a bit more adventurous. (It’s still relatively crowd-pleasing.) Also recommended.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

For our first entree, we ordered the “Tastes like Chicken” Because it is! – Crispy-fried Chicken with Sweet Chili Glaze, Stir-fried Vegetables, and Jasmine Rice.

This is one of the menu mainstays at Skipper Canteen, and one of us has ordered it or we’ve shared it with others a few times.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

To put our review of this dish in pair-a-docks-ical Jungle Cruise terms: inconsistency is the only consistency.

We have had excellent versions of this, and incredibly underwhelming ones. This was most definitely the latter. The chicken was simply too dry and overcooked. Everything else about it–the crunch of the batter, flavor, and accompaniments–were all fantastic as always, but it was impossible to get past the dry meat. When this dish is good, it is really good, but it’s definitely a gamble.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Our second entree was a relatively recent addition to the menu at Skipper Canteen, the Baa Baa Lamb Chops: Spice-rubbed Lamb Chops, Chermoula, Cauliflower, Potatoes, Cipollini Onions, and Harissa Sauce, garnished with Preserved Lemons and Herbs.

Prior to this, there was a different lamb dish on the menu, which was thinly-sliced and grilled. I’m a sucker for lamb, but wasn’t wild about that dish. The dish was over-seasoned and the natural gamey flavor of the lamb was muted; that might’ve been a plus for many, but not for me.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The Baa Baa Lamb Chops deliver exactly what the old dish should have. The meat was tender and perfectly prepared, and the meat’s natural flavor is enhanced by the rub, rather than smothered under it.

This is a fun and more inventive dish, with a (still relatively mild) bit of kick. The accompaniments were also good, but nothing particularly noteworthy or memorable–they did a good job serving their role as filler. (This dish actually reminds me  a lot  of the lamb chops that used to be served at Be Our Guest Restaurant.) All in all, we loved this dish and highly recommend it.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

For dessert, we ordered the Kungaloosh! – An African-inspired Chocolate Cake with Caramelized Bananas served with Cashew-Caramel Ice Cream topped with Coffee Dust.

This hits the right notes with the flavor combinations and sounds absolutely fantastic. We’ve had it before and really liked it. This time, the chocolate cake was on the dry and ordinary side, which dragged down the entire dessert. I swear I recall it being gooey and incredible before. (In general, I think Skipper Canteen is due for a new dessert menu–at least two of the items have been around for a while.)

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Ultimately, it should be easy to see why we love dining at Skipper Canteen. Even with a couple of missteps, we had a delicious meal overall. The food can be adventurous and ambitious, or crowd-pleasing and comforting. There are a number of delicious items on the menu, even if a couple can be on the more hit or miss side. The Jungle Cruise jokes and energy make it one of the more fun restaurants in Magic Kingdom, and there are a ton of Easter eggs, visual gags, and nods to other extinct attractions, parks, and characters from the S.E.A. universe.

Honestly, I’m at a loss for why Skipper Canteen is not much more popular. On paper, it checks all of the boxes that  should  make it a Walt Disney World fan-favorite. I sort of understand why that’s less true for first-timers–kids care more about princesses, Winnie the Pooh, and Beauty and the Beast characters more than they do “Disney Parks IP.”

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

When it comes to Disney diehards, I think there’s still a lack of awareness (I’m surprised it hasn’t been rebranded as the “Jungle  Cruise  Skipper Canteen Restaurant”) and also an erroneous assumption that the menu is unapproachable. That’s definitely not true–to the contrary, there’s something here for everyone.

Some fans may not mind one of their favorite Walt Disney World restaurants flying a little under the radar and always being able to score a last-minute ADR. That’s not my position, as that makes menu changes or complete concept overhauls all the more likely. So if you’ve never given Skipper Canteen a chance, we  highly recommend going, requesting a table in the Society of Explorers and Adventurers room, ordering the Veranda Fried Rice (or Falls Family Falafel), Baa Baa Lamb Chops (or “Hardy Har Char” Siu Pork), and Kungaloosh!, and enjoying the experience. It’s a great change-of-pace restaurant in Magic Kingdom, one of the rare spots where you won’t feel rushed or overwhelmed, and can explore or just sit back and enjoy the amusing ride.

The Skipper Canteen is one of our favorites. My only problem is that the food is VERY I consistent. Sometimes it’s amazing. And sometimes is bad.

' src=

I’ve eaten there a few times now – always good servers and food although I have only ever ordered the curry !

' src=

My family ate there on our last 2 visit to WDW. the first time we were in the library and the second time in the crew’s mess. The food was excellent and both times we had a server who was in full character. We did explore the other rooms while we were waiting for our food. It was fun seeing all the Jungle Cruise Easter Eggs scattered about the restaurant. It also made me think of one of my favorite places in the old Pleasure Island complex, The Adventurers Club. I miss that place, it was such a fun place.

' src=

I went there last on November 9th, 2021, my 50th birthday. I wanted to spend my 50th birthday at Magic Kingdom since it was having a 50th birthday, too, and we had grown up together. While there, I got to talking to the family next to me–a father, a mother, and two toddlers. I was wearing one of those buttons that announced I was celebrating my birthday. The family left before me and as he was leaving, the father told me he had paid for my meal! What a pleasant birthday surprise!

' src=

So if we go and ask for a table in the SEA room, that’ll probably be fine and they won’t think we’re being annoying? That’s a common thing to do?

' src=

And don’t forget about the Pão de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread/small rolls). They are a secret item on the menu and they’re amazing!

' src=

It’s our go-to MK table service restaurant. We’ve been there somewhere between 5 and 10 times, and only on our last trip did we get a server who did a full court press Jungle Cruise Skipper. *Some* of the books in the bookcase are real – I found an interesting title and later checked it out of the library. I hope they never get rid of Kungalosh!

' src=

Great review, Tom. We love the Skipper Canteen, mostly for the atmosphere and easter eggs tied to the Jungle Cruise. But, we have found the food to be excellent. We’ve had the chicken and the lamb chops, but we’ve also loved the Thai noodle dish. The falafal is amazing. I agree that the service can be in the middle, but overall, an amazing Disney dining experience.

Skipper Canteen Jungle Cruise Restaurant at Disney’s Magic Kingdom

We sometimes consider ourselves explorers. We rarely turn down a chance to travel or try something new. Travel without an itinerary? Of course. No cell phone coverage? O.K. Surfing classes? Yes please. Our “explorer” reach doesn’t however extend to eating whole Lion Fish. But if you’re heading to the Skipper Canteen Jungle Cruise Disney Restaurant, you should be ready for anything.

We are huge Jungle Cruise fans! So the fact that Magic Kingdom now has a Jungle Cruise restaurant is such fun! Here you can find exotic foods, funny puns, jungle finds, and everything that we’d come to love from the Jungle Cruise riverboat. Surely if exotic cruises were departing daily, the food must be exotic!

Dinner with a side of puns.

Just like Jungle Cruise, the puns show up as soon as you enter! We learned after about 15 minutes of jokes from our server that this would not be the place to come if you had a pressing fast pass or parade to watch afterwards. Because the jokes-they take some time! The jokes, much like the Jungle Cruise boat ride are obvious, ironic and fun. As much as we love the ride, since this is a restaurant we also kinda just wanted to order our food. Awkward laughter anyone? Yep right here… ! The servers do help break up the jokes by allowing guests to wander around and take pictures. Which was pretty awesome.

Skipper Canteen Restaurant Menu

The appetizer.

Ok, so we couldn’t get enough of the Falls Family Falafel. If you’ve never had falafel they’re like hush puppies made with garbanzo beans instead of cornmeal. You only get 5 of these little falafel balls but they are a great way to supplement your meal if you’re thinking of trying a daring explorer dish you may or may not like.

The Desserts

The desserts at Skipper Canteen were fantastic. They are rivaled by only one other Disney Restaurant, Sanaa. These were equally decadent, with a beautiful presentation, an excellent portion size and tasty enough that we would come back just for dessert and tea. Yes, they were that yummy.

The Entrees and Sides

Ok, let’s get down to why you’re really here. The menu options. While they do have pork, shrimp, lamb and steak the seasoning and add-ons give these dishes significant flair that you or your family may not like.  Thankfully there is a kids menu. Our not-too-exotic choices for dinner were also great. To find your next exotic flavor, check out the whole menu for Skipper Canteen here.

A nice vegetarian option here is the curried vegetable stew with naan and rice. Perfect for the rainy day we were escaping. Warm and very spicy, the bread and rice helped break up the “hot.” And once we got used to the heat, we decided to learn how to make curry at home.

You can grab yucca fries as a side with the steak, which was spicier. However, the avocado salsa cooled this dish down a bit. So that was nice. We also got the mac and cheese since we were traveling with G, but even as a kid’s size, this portion was huge. The menu is perfectly themed to the Explorer experience. Given the exotic food options, we usually don’t see a huge wait for this restaurant or and it’s by no means as hard a Dining Reservation to get.

Skipper Canteen Jungle Cruise Restaurant Review

It’s hard to tell if Skipper Canteen will master the exotic, but still edible, food niche at Magic Kingdom. While a restaurant like this would be perfect for Epcot and the adult crowd, most families will still be frequenting the safer and more familiar Thanksgiving Dinner option at Liberty Tree Tavern. Because who doesn’t love that restaurant?!??

Mind you, we thought Skipper Canteen was pretty cool as an experience, but it did not impress us enough to put it on the long list of ” must visit” restaurants. Or to be one we book every time we visit. We’ll be sure to give it another try soon though, and report back!

Jungle Navigation Skipper Canteen: A Review

Jungle Navigation Co. Skipper Canteen Restaurant in Magic Kingdom is a unique dining experience in Disney’s Adventureland but, will your kids enjoy the meal?

A peek inside the restaurant shows the tribal decor that matches the Jungle Cruise ride.

Choosing the best restaurants for your Disney vacation can be such a stressful part of the vacation planning.

The dining budget will be a significant part of your expense for the trip, so you want to be sure that your meals are delicious and as enjoyable as possible.

If you’re planning to visit Magic Kingdom during your next Walt Disney World vacation in Orlando, Florida, you’re probably wondering which restaurants should top your list.

When the Jungle Navigation Co Skipper Canteen opened in Adventureland, I was lucky enough to sample the new menu in the first few months.

I was on a girls trip for a runDisney weekend and dined with all adults at the time, but the experience definitely shaped whether or not to bring my kids back during the next visit.

Our Review of the Skipper Canteen Restaurant in Disney World

What is the skipper canteen, know before you go, reservations strongly recommended, timing tips for your reservation, park ticket required, find it by foot in magic kingdom:.

  • What’s On the Menu?

Does Skipper Canteen Serve Alcohol?

What is the restaurant like, will kids like this disney restaurant, more magic kingdom tips.

If you’ve never dined at the Skipper Canteen with your kids before, it’s a really good idea to take note of these thoughts before you make that reservation:

An inside view of the restaurant.

The name of the Skipper Canteen comes from the classic Disney ride just across the way, the Jungle Cruise.

To make the most out of your visit to the Skipper Canteen, you’ll definitely want to make sure you and your family ride the Jungle Cruise before you dine.

Alternatively, you could prep ahead and watch the Jungle Cruise movie at home and then plan to do the ride after your meal.

Either way, the theme of the restaurant won’t make much sense out of context but you won’t leave hungry!

If you’re considering the Skipper Canteen for a meal, here are a few things you should know first.

The Skipper Canteen is a table service restaurant in Magic Kingdom.

Reservations are strongly encouraged.

However, if you’re traveling during a slower season you may have some luck as a last-minute walk up.

The easiest way to make reservations is to use the My Disney Experience site .

The Jungle Cruise ride wait time gets long in a hurry. If you want to time a visit to the ride near your dining reservation, you’ll have to make sure to leave plenty of time.

During a recent visit, we enjoyed an evening ride on the Jungle Cruise after sunset. If you schedule a very late dinner reservation, you may luck out with a shorter wait time for the ride and can do it in the dark.

However, I believe a morning ride is the most fun, before things get too hot and while the sun is up so you can see all the detail of the ride. So if you plan to ride first and then have lunch after, your timing could work out much more easily.

The only way to dine at the Skipper Canteen is to have a valid park pass for Disney’s Magic Kingdom.

The restaurant is not available for guests outside of Magic Kingdom.

Skipper Canteen 1180 Seven Seas Dr. Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830

The Skipper Canteen is located in Adventureland near the Swiss Family Treehouse. If you’re looking for it by the Tiki Room or the Magic Carpets of Aladdin, you’re not in the right spot.

It is right next to the Sunshine Tree Terrace, closer to the entrance to the Hub.

Change depending on Magic Kingdom’s park hours for the day.

What’s On the Menu?

The Skipper Canteen serves a variety of African, Asian, and Latin-inspired dishes and the menu is filled with unique items your kids are not likely to recognize.

You can check out  the full Skipper Canteen menu here .

While right in line with all of the Disney dining menus inspired by exotic locations, the actual item name maybe something that is new to you but they always include a plainer description in more familiar American vocabulary.

Seafood, Meat, & Vegetarian Items

An appetizer at Skipper Canteen

The menu has a variety of options including a fish of the day and a shrimp appetizer for seafood lovers and several items with pulled pork, lamb chops, beef or chicken.

Vegetarians will be able to select from a salad, vegetable stew, and falafel appetizer.

All of the dishes incorporate vegetables, salsa, pineapple, and/or jasmine rice fill the plate.

Budget Tips

A salad in a bowl.

The average entree prices run fairly high at Skipper Canteen, just like they do at most Disney restaurants.

If you want to save a little money on the meal, you could order soup and salad from the appetizer menu for less than a single entree.

Add an appetizer for the table and split a dessert to help round out your meal and allow you to sample a few items.

Ask Your Server

A plate of pulled pork next to corn cakes.

The wonderful thing about Disney dining is the expertise your table server will have about the menu.

Disney accommodates allergies and dietary requirements so well. Unsure of anything listed on your menu item? Simply ask and they’ll explain what it is to help you decide.

Kid-Friendly Dishes

A kid's bowl of mac & cheese.

The kids’ menu at Skipper Canteen offers several hearty options including steak, chicken, and tofu.

But parents of picky eaters who want to dine someplace a little more fun and different will be pleased to know there is a super-safe mac and cheese option that was absolutely delicious, too.

It used to be the standard that no restaurants in Magic Kingdom would serve alcohol.

They’ve since changed that rule and now the table service restaurants do serve beer and wine with dinner.

The Skipper Canteen goes farther with a specialty cocktails menu that includes margaritas, sangria, and the Jungle Bird. We were so excited for this change in policy!

Skipper Canteen is absolutely loaded with fun Jungle Cruise details.

Quirky decor on display includes carved animal figures, tribal masks, adventure maps, and drums.

A carved animal head with horns on the wall.

The servers are all dressed and ready to hop on a Jungle Cruise of their own after helping you enjoy an exotic meal during your vacation.

When I planned our return trip to Disney and needed to make our dining reservations, I chose to skip the canteen when visiting with my teen girls.

Not because I thought they wouldn’t like it, but because we could only dine at one table service restaurant during the visit to Magic Kingdom during our trip and we preferred another location. (You can see our favorite restaurant picks here .)

Kids will enjoy the jungle theme of the restaurant, especially if they enjoyed the movie.

The menu is filled with unique items, but the kid options are one of the better groupings available in the park if you want a healthy meal with lots of vegetables to offset the hamburgers/hot dogs routine of quick service.

If the price fits with your budget and you’re excited to try something different on your trip, this could be an excellent choice for table service with kids.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Disney World's rumored Jungle Cruise-themed restaurant is no longer a rumor. In March the Walt Disney World Theme Parks blog  noted that a restaurant featuring motifs from the popular Disney attraction would take over the Adventureland Veranda, a space that has been shuttered since 1994. The blog speculated that it would be called Skipper's Cantina and that it may even serve alcohol.

Disney World confirmed last week that there is indeed a a Jungle Cruise-themed restaurant opening but that it is called the Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen. It will serve "World Famous Jungle Cuisine," but there are no details as to what that really entails. There is also no information on whether or not the restaurant will serve booze, something only one other Magic Kingdom restaurant offers.

Disney World notes that the restaurant will have "several unique dining rooms," including a crew mess hall and a "once-hidden secret meeting room of the famed Society of Explorers and Adventurers." As for the servers, they will all be Jungle Cruise Skippers, or the people who lead the Jungle Cruise ride. Skipper Canteen is slated to open at the end of 2015.

Disney World is on a restaurant expansion streak. In June, the theme park announced that The Edison, a restaurant which centers around a "1920s-period electric company,"  will open in the park next year . The restaurant will have an "industrial gothic" feel and will feature cabaret dancers and contortionists. In addition to The Edison, acclaimed chef Masaharu Morimoto  is opening a two-story pan-Asian concept which will serve dishes like dim sum later this year.

30 best Disney World rides ranked for 2024

Brooke McDonald

With four iconic theme parks, more than five decades of history, innovation and nostalgia to consider, and over 50 rides to choose from, naming anything the "best" at Walt Disney World is no easy task ... but we gave it a try anyway.

The best rides at the Most Magical Place on Earth are the ones that deliver incredible thrills, groundbreaking technology and mind-blowingly immersive theming — so this ranking is based on a combination of storytelling, thrill factor, innovation, emotional response and old-fashioned nostalgia.

So buckle up, tug on the yellow strap and enjoy your tour of the best rides at Walt Disney World.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, Disney's Hollywood Studios
  • Height requirement: 40 inches

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance — the centerpiece attraction in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge — is such an epic, visceral experience that it feels reductive to call it merely a ride. During the nearly 20-minute adventure in a galaxy far, far away, guests become recruits, enlisted to join the Resistance in the fight against Kylo Ren and the First Order.

There's no other Disney attraction that can compete with the scale of Rise of the Resistance and its four different ride systems, vast cinematic sets, upward of 65 Audio-Animatronics, original score by John Williams, and audio and visual media featuring the original "Star Wars" cast.

The queue, pre-show and ride experience blend seamlessly, forming a cohesive narrative journey that is enhanced by technology but never overpowered by it. The attraction makes you forget the real world — but not because you're stuck in a dark space staring at a screen. In fact, Disney cast members doubling as Resistance heroes or First Order captors appear at key moments during the attraction, bringing a tangible reality to the experience that deepens the immersion.

Rise of the Resistance is a fully realized attraction that also still feels aspirational — new rides have opened since, but none have been quite so ambitious or delivered as Rise does. The bar has been set, and Rise is holding strong.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: World Discovery, Epcot
  • Height requirement: 42 inches

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind — Epcot's first-ever roller coaster and Walt Disney World's first Marvel ride — definitely wins the "most fun" award. The fact that it's still using a virtual queue nearly two years after opening is a testament to its popularity.

The galaxy's fate is at stake, and the Guardians need help. Coming to their aid, guests board a "starjumper," a 360-degree rotating ride vehicle that reverse-launches into a high-speed indoor roller coaster journey through time and space.

One of six randomized '70s and '80s pop-rock classics provides the soundtrack for the silky smooth ride that feels like a swinging, soaring dance party through space. Like Space Mountain, the ride is in near darkness but enhanced with elaborate projections and some physical set pieces.

Everyone has a favorite song, and predicting which one you'll get adds to the fun, making the ride even more repeatable.

Bonus points go to the physical queue, which winds through the Wonders of Xandar pavilion, formerly "Universe of Energy," and tells a story that feels like classic Epcot but with plenty of Guardians banter.

Ride vehicles rotate to direct attention to a mix of screens and physical set pieces, and though it's a controlled rotation, those prone to motion sickness are likely to be affected by this ride. The negative effects can be minimized by avoiding looking at the screens and keeping your eyes pointed in the direction of the track.

Avatar Flight of Passage

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Pandora – The World of Avatar, Disney's Animal Kingdom
  • Height requirement: 44 inches

You don't even need to see an "Avatar" film to be wowed by your first ride on Avatar — Flight of Passage.

The breathtaking 4D experience simulates a flight over Pandora's Valley of Moara. A motorcycle-like ride vehicle creates the sensations of soaring, swooping and diving on the back of a banshee, which you can feel breathing and flapping its wings beneath you.

The stunning score, gorgeous visuals and effects like scents, mist and wind combine to make this one a top must-do, but it also comes with one of the heftiest wait times — still regularly clocking in at two or more hours, nearly seven years after opening.

Luckily, the standby queue is one of Walt Disney World's best, winding through alien flora, mysterious caves, an RDA bunker and a bioluminescent forest before entering an ACE laboratory that includes a stunning full-size Avatar moving inside a tank.

Interesting though the queue is, we still only recommend waiting in it when wait times are manageable, typically at rope drop or as late as possible in the evening.

For most Walt Disney World guests, time is money, so purchasing an Individual Lightning Lane is a smart way to skip the line.

Haunted Mansion

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Liberty Square, Magic Kingdom
  • Height requirement: None

An opening-day attraction that never gets old, Haunted Mansion adds more fans to its cult following every year. 2023 brought the debut of a new film inspired by the ride and the announcement that the mansion's 999 happy haunts would soon be hitting the high seas in Haunted Mansion Parlor, opening when the Disney Treasure sets sail this December.

This Ghost Host-led tour aboard a Doom Buggy weaves through the cavernous mansion and its grounds. It's spooky but not too scary for most kiddos — just remind timid little ones that these grim-grinning ghosts are having a big party, and everyone's invited to the swinging wake.

You don't need a new reason to keep this one high on the list, but last November, the Walt Disney World ride did get a long-awaited addition of the legendary Hatbox Ghost, already part of Disneyland's version.

Expedition Everest — Legend of the Forbidden Mountain

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Asia, Disney's Animal Kingdom

Expedition Everest — Legend of the Forbidden Mountain at Disney's Animal Kingdom is a great roller coaster on its own, but like the other top rides on this list, its immersive theming is as strong as its thrills.

From Serka Zong village in the Himalayan foothills, an old steam-engine tea train operated by a tour and expedition company brings climbers to Mount Everest base camp — if they're brave enough to ignore the warnings that a mysterious yeti stalks the mountain, that is.

The tallest "mountain" of any Disney park at 199 feet, this is definitely one of Walt Disney World's more intense rides. There's a sizable drop and some big surprises, but there are no inversions, and it's well paced, giving you time to catch your breath during the scenic ascent and dramatic pauses.

This is one of the better picks at Animal Kingdom if you have to do the standby line — it moves quickly, and the immersive queue sets the stage for the adventure, passing through the village tourism office, the Yeti Museum, and even an internet cafe and inn for trekkers.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Frontierland, Magic Kingdom

The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness combines family-friendly thrills, nostalgia and immersive theming. Hold on to your hats and glasses as you take off on a runaway mine train, weaving among the iconic towering buttes that reach 197 feet at the highest point.

The bumpy ride is laugh-inducing, sending riders sliding into each other as the train rounds tight turns. A fan favorite since it opened in 1980, the oldie-but-goodie still stands up to Disney's newer coasters in both theming and fun, and at nearly 3 1/2 minutes, it provides a much more satisfying length than many of the newbies.

Three main ascents are followed by gentle drops and thrilling turns that aren't overly stomach-churning. For the wildest ride, sit in Row 15 in the back of the train.

An enhanced backstory and new character, Barnabas T. Bullion, were introduced to the ride in 2013, along with an updated interactive queue. Owner and president of the Big Thunder Mining Company, Bullion is also a member of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, a fictional mythology spanning stories and attractions across Disney parks worldwide.

Pirates of the Caribbean

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Adventureland, Magic Kingdom

Constructed in just 15 months after guests expressed disappointment when Magic Kingdom opened without the popular Disneyland attraction in 1971, Florida's version of the (mostly) slow-moving, dark boat ride absolutely deserves a top spot on this list.

Housed behind the facade of an old Spanish fort, El Castillo del Morro, the entrance and queue take their design inspiration from a fortress in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Many people would argue Disneyland's version is better, but Walt Disney World's queue is far more immersive. Depending on whether you use the standby queue or Lightning Lane, you'll pass through either the soldiers' quarters or the dungeon, where a famous scene dreamed up by famed Walt Disney Imagineer Marc Davis shows two skeletons frozen for eternity staring at a chessboard stuck in a no-win configuration.

The ride includes one gentle but exciting plunge in the darkness, followed by some of the most iconic scenes, music and Audio-Animatronics on any Disney ride.

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Sunset Boulevard, Disney's Hollywood Studios

It's hard to imagine Disney's Hollywood Studios without the iconic Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, but the attraction didn't open until 1994, along with the Sunset Boulevard area of the park.

Once the site of a glamorous Tinseltown hotel, the ominous 199-foot-tall tower casts an aura of foreboding over the decaying grounds. Overgrown landscaping and eerie big-band jazzy tunes help set the stage in the immersive queue, which becomes even more impressive upon entering the abandoned, cobweb-covered lobby.

As the story goes, on a fateful night in 1939, five hotel quests disappeared when lightning struck the hotel elevator. Today, guests visit the abandoned site — riding in a still-functioning service elevator that enters the fifth dimension, launching riders on a series of dramatic drop sequences.

Not for the faint of heart (or stomach), this ride is both scary and nausea-inducing for some, but a runaway fan-favorite thrill ride for many. Even if you hate the freefall sensation, it's worth trying to experience some of Disney's best-ever ride theming and storytelling.

Tron Lightcycle / Run

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Tomorrowland, Magic Kingdom
  • Height requirement: 48 inches

A must for thrill-seekers, Tron Lightcycle / Run at Magic Kingdom is now the fastest roller coaster at Walt Disney World. Inspired by the 1982 "Tron" and 2010 "Tron: Legacy" films, the indoor-outdoor coaster adds more thrills and gorgeous nighttime lighting to Tomorrowland.

We love the unique body positioning that really makes you feel like you're on a bike (especially in the front row!) and the silky smooth ride.

Many Tron fans will tell you night rides are superior — and with lighting after dark, they're not wrong — but unless you're willing to pay for a timed Individual Lightning Lane after sunset or are eligible for the 6 p.m. virtual queue drop during extended evening hours for Deluxe Resort guests, you'll have to settle for the virtual queue return time you're assigned.

Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Hollywood Boulevard, Disney's Hollywood Studios

Walt Disney World took nearly 50 years to open its first ride starring Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, so it had to be good. Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway opened March 4, 2020, at Disney's Hollywood Studios, replacing The Great Movie Ride in the Chinese Theatre.

The innovative dark ride blends a little bit of everything — trackless ride technology, digital projections, Audio-Animatronics, a catchy original theme song and original animation based on the newest generation of Mickey Mouse shorts.

The pre-show features an original Mickey Mouse short called "Perfect Picnic," after which guests find themselves on a train ride driven by Engineer Goofy through Runnamuck Park.

The ride is packed with hidden Mickeys and Easter eggs. For example, the original whistle used in Disney's 1928 animated short film "Steamboat Willie" was used to create the train whistle sound on Runaway Railway.

Each "train" comprises four trackless ride vehicles, which split apart and shuffle positions during the attraction, with each car providing a slightly different ride experience.

Pro tip: Keep your eyes peeled. In addition to a secondary storyline involving poor Pluto's desperate attempt to reunite himself — and a picnic basket — with his owners, a curious little crab appears in each scene, giving you even more to look for during repeat rides.

Spaceship Earth

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: World Celebration, Epcot

Housed in a geodesic sphere that's arguably as iconic to Walt Disney World as Cinderella Castle, Spaceship Earth opened with Epcot on Oct. 1, 1982.

Related: Why Epcot is now Disney World's must-do park

The 16-minute, slow-moving dark ride follows the development of human communication from prehistoric times to the computer age and beyond. From the invention of the alphabet to classical Greece to the Industrial Revolution, key periods and moments are represented with detailed sets, animatronic figures and narration by Dame Judi Dench.

The attraction has received a few updates through the years, but if you love the current version, thank the Phoenicians it's still around. While it might not be a physically thrilling ride, it's quite the thrill to make the "rounds" inside such a legendary structure.

Jungle Cruise

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

This opening-day attraction is always a good time; if you don't believe me, you're in de-Nile.

The "10-minute, 10,000-mile" boat ride down the rivers of Asia, Africa and South America first debuted on Disneyland's opening day in 1955 as a straightforward, educational attraction. It took shape as the joke-filled version we know today in 1960, when Walt Disney Imagineer Marc Davis stepped aboard to skipper the story in the comedic direction that made it the "World Famous Jungle Cruise" it is today.

A 2021 reimagining to address cultural insensitivities in certain scenes introduced new characters, animals and scenes to the ride and established a more elaborate backstory that deepens the ride's connections to the Society of Explorers and Adventurers.

Pro tip: We love pairing a ride on Jungle Cruise with a meal at the Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen restaurant across from the ride. This Easter egg-packed restaurant serves some of the best table-service food in Magic Kingdom (along with plenty of puns courtesy of Skipper servers).

Kilimanjaro Safaris

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Africa, Disney's Animal Kingdom

The next best thing to a real African safari, Kilimanjaro Safaris is in many ways the realization of Walt Disney's original vision for Jungle Cruise, which was to have wild animals in true-to-nature environments. You can spot more than 30 different animal species during the 18-minute open-air drive across 110 acres of savanna — nearly as much space as all of Magic Kingdom park.

Given the unpredictability of live animals, no two rides are the same. Through the years, we've experienced so many memorable moments, from a giraffe coming right up to our vehicle and keeping us there until he was ready to move along, to watching a 2-month-old baby elephant run around on her first day on the savanna.

Pro tip: Many of the animals are most active early in the morning and at sundown, so aim for those times. And don't shy away from a rainy ride — some animals seem to love it, and you'll stay (mostly) undercover.

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Height requirement: 38 inches

"Star Wars" fans simply can't pass on the chance to take the controls in the cockpit of the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy by joining Hondo Ohnaka's flight crew for an important smuggling mission aboard the Millennium Falcon.

For "Star Wars" fans, the queue is as bucket list-worthy as actually taking a seat at the controls. After first passing the life-size Millennium Falcon from the front as you enter the queue, you'll get to see it from additional angles and from multiple levels, getting a closer look at the iconic ship from different perspectives as you wind through the Easter egg-packed queue.

Flight crews of six are assigned the positions of pilot, gunner or engineer and get a few minutes to explore the main hold and take a seat at the centerpiece dejarik table before heading to the cockpit.

Once in your seats at the controls, it's time to work as a team to put the bucket of bolts to the test and see if you can complete your mission — and get back to Batuu with the Falcon in one piece. Pilots steer, gunners defend and engineers perform repairs, and at the end of your mission, Hondo will let you know how well you've done — and what your cut of the credits will be.

Pro tip: Young riders who just make the 38-inch flight requirement often struggle to reach all of the controls in the pilot position. If they have their heart set on piloting, consider putting the longest-armed adult in the other pilot position so they can reach over and help.

Slinky Dog Dash

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Toy Story Land, Disney's Hollywood Studios

When guests enter Toy Story Land, they "shrink" to the size of one of Andy's toys from the films. It's easy to look at Slinky Dog Dash, which Andy has "built" in his backyard by combining his Slinky Dog toy with a Mega Coaster Kit, and assume it's a coaster for little kids a la Magic Kingdom's The Barnstormer.

But this coaster is tons of fun and worth the ride, even without kids. The ride vehicle mimics Slinky Dog's springy body — launching then seemingly springing along, bobbing up and down over gentle but exhilarating hills, and winding among Andy's toys. You'll also glimpse some wonderful vistas across the theme park. A second, more thrilling launch, narrated by Slinky Dog, sends riders seemingly straight up into the sky, giving a brief feeling of weightlessness.

Grown-ups will get a nostalgic kick out of the classic toy boxes used to construct portions of the queue and load area too.

Pro tip: Slinky Dog Dash is the most popular Genie+ Lightning Lane at Disney's Hollywood Studios, so make sure to grab this one first at 7 a.m. The ride also frequently goes down due to weather, so if you're opting for the standby queue and only have one day to ride it, make sure you don't save it until the end of the night if the sky looks threatening.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Fantasyland, Magic Kingdom

Like Slinky Dog Dash, this is another true family coaster that's not just for kids. Opened in 2014 as part of Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland expansion, this gentle but exciting coaster ups the thrill factor just enough to engage adults and bigger kids without scaring less daring littles.

The ride vehicles are modeled after mine carts and sway back and forth along the otherwise smooth track, which ventures into the diamond mine where the seven dwarfs famously whistle while they work.

Bright, reflective gemstones (look out for the Hidden Mickey !); cheerful, singing dwarf animatronics; and an earworm rendition of "Heigh-Ho" as you make your ascent up the main hill make it impossible not to smile on this ride.

One drawback — there's only one main show scene and a second brief final scene, making the ride feel over a little too quickly given its consistently long wait times.

The ride is available via standby queue (an interactive queue helps keep kids busy) or Individual Lightning Lane. The price may not be worth the cost for thrill-seekers, but it could definitely be worth it with antsy younger kids.

Star Tours — The Adventures Continue

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Echo Lake, Disney's Hollywood Studios

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge might get more of the attention lately, but Walt Disney World's first "Star Wars" ride has been going strong since 1989.

Opened first as Star Tours and later updated to Star Tours — The Adventures Continue in 2011, this 3D flight simulator ride takes guests on an unpredictable adventure across a galaxy far, far away in a Starspeeder 1000 ship helmed by reluctant pilot C-3PO and trusty navigator R2-D2.

Every adventure includes four randomized main scenes, introducing potential variability of characters, including classic original trilogy characters like Princess Leia and Darth Vader and destinations like the planets Tatooine and Hoth.

Updates through the years have added new characters and destinations as new "Star Wars" films have been released and ahead of the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. On April 5, 2024, Star Tours got its latest galactic glow-up — new scenes and characters from the Disney+ series "Ahsoka," "Andor" and "The Mandalorian." Now, guests could get an urgent transmission from Ahsoka Tano, Cassian Andor or the Mandalorian and Grogu.

For a limited time, all guests will visit a new destination, the planet Seatos from "Ahsoka," where the Starspeeder joins Ahsoka's T-6 Jedi Shuttle in a dogfight amid a pod of purrgil, massive space whales first introduced in the animated series "Star Wars Rebels." After this phase of introduction to the new characters and scenes, the ride will reenter a "random play" mode, as Walt Disney Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald called the ride's eventual fully randomized sequencing, and will increase the ride's total potential storyline variations to more than 250.

Peter Pan's Flight

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

One of Disney's most nostalgic and iconic dark rides, with a soundtrack that can instantly unlock childhood memories, Peter Pan's Flight opened with Magic Kingdom in 1971 and to this day remains one of the park's most popular Genie+ Lightning Lane attractions — with a correspondingly hefty standby wait.

Board a pirate ship and take off from the Darling family nursery, flying over the rooftops of London then off to Neverland. Fly past scenes like a miniature Mermaid Lagoon below and a life-size swordfight between Peter Pan and Captain Hook overhead.

If you do end up in the standby line, the interactive queue through the Darling family home helps pass the time. Look out for twinkling signs of Tinkerbell's trail of pixie dust, and you might spot her rattling around and even getting stuck in tiny places around the house.

Space Mountain

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

This Walt Disney World original, which opened Jan. 15, 1975, was so popular that it inspired new versions in four more parks worldwide. Fitting for Tomorrowland, it was the first roller coaster ever to be controlled by a computer.

The iconic structure encloses two almost identical tracks, Alpha and Omega, which each launch spaceship-themed ride vehicles on their ride through space. The nearly total darkness makes the coaster feel much faster as it makes sudden sharp turns and drops.

An attraction that definitely feels its age, this coaster doesn't have any inversions or extreme drops, but it's definitely one of Walt Disney World's rougher rides.

Remy's Ratatouille Adventure

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: World Showcase, Epcot

Pixar meets Paris in a whimsical extension of Epcot's France pavilion that gently transitions from the real-world architectural grandeur of the City of Light to Pixar's more playful and exaggerated animated version, setting the stage for Remy's Ratatouille Adventure.

You'll shrink down to rat size and board rat-shaped trackless vehicles for a 4D dark ride that has you scurrying through Gusteau's restaurant.

The multisensory ride combines screens and physical sets, enhanced with scents and some other surprise effects we won't spoil, and makes wonderful use of the film's excellent soundtrack.

Located at the opposite end of Epcot from most of the park's other rides, Remy's is a welcome reward for kids who lose steam making their way around Epcot's World Showcase.

The ride is equally enjoyable for adults and kids, but it may bother some guests prone to motion sickness.

Frozen Ever After

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

A reskin of the Viking-themed Maelstrom boat ride attraction in Epcot's Norway pavilion, Frozen Ever After takes guests on a cruise through Arendelle past scenes inspired by the original "Frozen" film.

Related: How Disney brought animated mega-hit 'Frozen' to life at Hong Kong Disneyland

Audio-Animatronic characters sing abridged versions of songs from the film, modified to support the ride's storyline. Light thrills include a gentle reverse drift during "Let It Go" and one thrilling drop that's not too scary to keep little kids off the ride — but just nerve-wracking enough to generate some hilarious expressions on the Disney PhotoPass ride photos.

This ride continues to be extremely popular and breaks down a lot, so if it's a top priority, try to pick up an early Genie+ Lightning Lane or rope drop it.

Toy Story Mania

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Toy Story Mania opened in 2008, long predating the opening of Toy Story Land, which better established the ride within the world of Andy's toys. The 3D carnival game-inspired attraction remains extremely popular, is endlessly rerideable (that is, until your arm gets too tired) and the game aspect of the ride even edges out newer game-focused rides like Web Slingers at Disneyland.

Ride vehicles seat two passengers side by side at spring-action shooters and whip and spin players from game to game.

Toy Story characters, including Woody and Jessie, Rex and Trixie, and the Green Army Men, host a series of five carnival-style 3D games on screens. Players ultimately compete against each other, but can also work together to unlock secret targets worth more points.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: DinoLand U.S.A., Disney's Animal Kingdom

You either love or hate this rough, dark and downright terrifying (for some) blast to the past. Guests board a Time Rover with a mission to travel back to the Cretaceous period to retrieve an iguanodon and bring it back for research before the extinction-causing meteor strikes.

The fan-favorite preshow features Dr. Marsh (Phylicia Rashad), director of the Dino Institute, and Dr. Grant Seeker, a goofy, passionate scientist who briefs guests on the mission and frantically narrates during the harrowing attraction.

Loosely based on the 2000 film "Dinosaur," this attraction parallels Disneyland's Indiana Jones Adventure with respect to ride vehicle and layout. Unlike Indy, however, Dinosaur relies more on extreme darkness and jump scares than cinematic sets and impressive effects.

Kids who love dinosaurs and don't scare easily love this ride.

Dinosaur fans should get their rides in while they can. While no official retheme has been confirmed, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D'Amaro began teasing potential rethemes of DinoLand, first in 2022 at D23 Expo, then again in 2023 at Destination D23, by playing "Indiana Jones" theme music, teasing a possible "Indiana Jones"-themed update in the area. More recently, D'Amaro confirmed that work is "well underway" for this project , with teams already going on research trips to Mexico.

Living with the Land

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: World Nature, Epcot

A prime example of Epcot edutainment, this "voyage of discovery and awareness" aboard slow-moving boats is part dark ride, part greenhouse tour.

Situated in Epcot's The Land pavilion, the dark ride portion showcases a variety of ecosystems — the tropical rainforest, desert and American prairie — before cruising through the pavilion's four working greenhouses.

It might sound dull, but guests of all ages will find themselves captivated by the array of different edible crops growing on display — from familiar tomatoes, cucumbers, salad greens and strawberries, to the more exotic banana trees and giant melons, to cacao and peanuts. Fish farms and hydroponic and aquaponic farming methods are also showcased.

Get a taste of the end products by dining at Sunshine Seasons or Garden Grill Restaurant, also in the Land pavilion. Both restaurants use produce and seafood farmed in the greenhouses in some of their dishes.

If you visit Epcot during the holiday season, be sure to wait until after dark to ride, when a holiday overlay bathes the greenhouses in the warm glow of festive colored lights.

Pro tip: Want to learn more? Book a Behind the Seeds walking tour — a one-hour tour of the fish farm and greenhouses.

Soarin' Around the World

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Height Requirement: 40 inches

This flight simulator attraction gives riders a hang gliding sensation as they "soar," feet dangling up to 40 feet above the ground, through screen-based scenes.

The ride originally debuted as "Soarin' Over California" in 2005. In 2016, it was replaced with the current "Around the World" version, which visits some of the world's most famous natural wonders and manmade landmarks, including the American Southwest, the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower and the Great Pyramids of Egypt.

Recognizing fans' love for the original "Over California" attraction, Disney has begun bringing it back for limited runs. At Walt Disney World, it returned during the Disney100 celebration, and at Disney California Adventure, it's been making an annual return during the park's yearly Food & Wine Festival.

Pro tip: The farther you sit from the center of the screen, the more distorted some images appear — the Eiffel Tower in particular appears dramatically curved for guests sitting on the far sides. The best section and row for the least distorted image and no feet hanging in your view is B1.

Navi River Journey

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

  • Location: Pandora — The World of Avatar, Disney's Animal Kingdom

Navi River Journey can't compete with Flight of Passage in the thrill department, but it does fully immerse guests in a beautiful, tangible Pandoran setting.

During the slow-moving (indoor) nighttime journey in Pandora's bioluminescent rainforest, boats float through the lush jungle, seemingly alive with the glowing sights and sounds of the planet's otherworldly creatures. Screens and projections are combined with physical sets, motion and sound to create impressively realistic effects, like alien creatures hopping from giant leaf to leaf overhead.

Ethereal music swells during the journey, reaching a crescendo as the boat approaches the massive Navi Shaman of Songs, a lifelike animatronic that is the most advanced Walt Disney Imagineering has ever created.

Navi River Journey gives those who don't meet the height requirement or are unable to ride Flight of Passage a great opportunity to experience Pandora's beautiful theming and detail.

"It's a small world"

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Who wouldn't want to hop aboard "the happiest cruise that ever sailed"? An opening day attraction at Magic Kingdom following a successful debut at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, then at Disneyland in 1966, this nostalgic classic celebrates a message of peace, understanding and friendship by sharing a look at the world through the eyes of a child.

Different countries and cultures worldwide are represented by costumed Audio-Animatronic dolls designed to look as though they've been created by a child using papier-mache and other craft materials.

The lyrics to the timeless theme song by Robert and Richard Sherman, sung in the native languages of the represented regions, have become synonymous with calls for peace, empathy and acceptance. In an ongoing effort to honor the ride's message of inclusivity, a doll in a wheelchair was added to the ride last March.

Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

An oldie but goodie that's enjoyed a new wave of appreciation and popularity in recent years, the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover takes guests on an elevated, narrated tour of Tomorrowland.

The magnetically powered tram takes passengers behind the scenes for a different perspective of Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin and travels right through Space Mountain. The ride also provides stunning views of Cinderella Castle, the canopy of Tron Lightcycle / Run and an overhead look at Tomorrowland Speedway.

There's no Lightning Lane but the standby queue moves quickly and is rarely longer than 20 minutes.

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

The current iteration of Test Track gets high marks for thrills but lands this low spot for seriously lackluster theming, especially when compared to a sister ride at Disney California Adventure Park. Radiator Springs Racers uses the same ride vehicles and mechanisms but adds the stunning backdrop of Ornament Valley, a heartwarming dark ride component, and a head-to-head race at speeds of up to 65 miles per hour to the finish for extra fun.

With the right theming, this could be a top-tier ride like Radiator Springs Racers — and the good news is, a retheme is in the works. Test Track will close June 17, 2024, for its reimagining, which will take inspiration from the original World of Motion. We can't wait to see how it turns out!

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith

disney restaurant near jungle cruise

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith is a high-speed roller coaster ride in the near darkness, save for neon signs, with Aerosmith music blasting the whole time.

The premise: After meeting Aerosmith in the recording studio, guests are invited to the band's concert on the other side of town and have to get through LA traffic in a super-stretch limo to get there.

This ride can be rough, but that doesn't stop it from being perpetually popular.

Note: Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is currently closed for refurbishment, with plans to reopen in summer 2024.

Which Disney Cruise Line Ship Did I Prefer: The Wish or The Dream?

The Disney Wish vs Disney Dream. Take a deep dive into two Disney Cruise Line ships, to learn about the differences between them.

When you’re booking a sailing aboard the Disney Cruise Line, you have so many options and choices! From your itinerary to shore excursions to onboard activities to your rotational dining schedule, you can customize your cruise experience in countless ways – but it all starts with the ship itself. The ship you sail aboard can make your cruise, shaping the details of your daily dining, your onboard entertainment, and even how your stateroom is decorated and designed. So, how do you decide which cruise ship is the best choice? Are some Disney cruise ships better than others?

I’ve had the chance to sail on two ships within the Disney Cruise Line Fleet: the Disney Dream and the Disney Wish . Which did I prefer? Here’s my overview of what the Disney Dream does well and where the Disney Wish excels.

Attraction Issue Bundle

Attraction special – haunted mansion, attraction special – jungle cruise, attraction special – pirates of the caribbean, disney wish vs disney dream: which is the better disney cruise ship.

While it’s tough to compare – and choose between! – different Disney Cruise Line ships, the experience is different on different sailings. And I’ll just tell you right off the bat that overall, I preferred the Disney Wish to the Disney Dream .

Yes, it’s true! I have only ever been on two Disney Cruise Line sailings, and I’ve only experienced the Wish and the Dream. I was not expecting to prefer the Wish, to be honest, because the Dream and the Fantasy are such classic ships, and they’re so beloved by Disney Cruise Line fans. I was kind of surprised that I liked the Wish more, and by how much more I liked it. Here’s an overview of my experiences on both the Wish and the Dream, and where I think each ship really shines.

The Food is Better on the Disney Wish vs the Disney Dream

The biggest detail that was so much better on the Wish – like, leaps and bounds better – was the food. I’m talking about the regular rotational dining and the buffet dining; while on the Dream all of that food was unremarkable, on the Wish it was great.

The detail I was really shocked by on the Wish versus the Dream was the difference in the quick service food options. Both The Wish and the Dream have a quick service area on the pool deck. However, on the Disney Dream, these quick service windows are offering pizza, sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, and similar items. On the Disney Wish, the options are more varied and interesting. There’s a Mexican buffet and a barbecue buffet, for example. I enjoyed these quick service options on Deck 11 of the Wish so much. I wasn’t expecting to, but they were fantastic!

And when it comes to the buffets – Cabanas on the Dream and Marceline Market on the Wish – Marceline Market was so much better. I found the quality of the food there better, and it seemed more organized. The Cast Members really took the time to serve Guests the food instead of it being more of a free-for-all. Plus, there was a really nice omelet station!

However, there was one detail that stood out to me on the Dream that the Wish couldn’t match: the Mickey waffles! If you’re a fan of Mickey waffles like me, I found these to be better on the Dream. I think the Wish was still maybe a little new and working out its Mickey waffle recipe. So, while the food was generally better overall on the Wish, those Mickey waffles won on the Dream.

Rotational Dining Wins on the Wish

Rotational dining is a huge part of your Disney Cruise Line experience, and when it comes to this key detail, the Wish was far and away superior. The rotational dining on the Disney Wish outdid what was available on the Disney Dream. This is because of the theming, first and foremost. Outside of the quality of the food, the rotational dining on the Wish is better because it’s much more immersive. You don’t get nearly the same level of immersion and theming on the Dream. While rotational dining is themed, it’s much more subtle – and when I’m on a Disney cruise, I want immersive dining experiences.

Dining at Worlds of Marvel on the Wish is truly immersive! Photo by Danny Shuster

What does the rotational dining onboard the Disney Wish include? There are three locations: Worlds of Marvel , Arendelle , and 1923 . Those three restaurants were really so much more interesting than the dining options and thematics on the Dream (which are Enchanted Garden, Royal Palace, and Animator’s Palate). While Animator’s Palate is up there in terms of immersion, it was more for the kids. The rotational dining on the Wish still appeals to kids, but these restaurant options are better suited for every age, I would say, and appeal to both kids and adults.

A look at Animator’s Palete onboard the Dream. Photo by Julie de la Fe

The Disney Wish Offered More Entertainment Choices

If you’re hoping to satisfy the interests of your entire family on your Disney Cruise Line vacation, the Wish offers entertainment that appeals to both kids and adults. I personally found the entertainment options on the Wish much more appealing for my age bracket. I’m in my 30s and I don’t have kids, and I am a Disney girl; I love Disney stage shows, and I enjoyed the shows offered on the Wish.

The stage shows weren’t of the same caliber as on the Dream. I found this ship’s stage shows quite dated. They were cute, but I felt they were really built for kids. And in my opinion, the thing about Disney that’s so special is when the entertainment appeals to everyone. The Wish, I feel, really encapsulated that. On this ship, the available shows were able to appeal to all age groups.

Staterooms Are Bigger (and Theming is Better) on the Disney Wish

Let’s talk about rooms . After all, it’s where you’ll be staying (albeit for short periods of time, since you’ll be out enjoying all Disney Cruise Line ships have to offer!). The rooms on the Wish are better – they’re a little bit bigger, and they’re themed. You can stay in rooms themed to  Frozen ,  Cinderella, or The Little Mermaid , and you’ll also spot different themed hallway art and lighting throughout the decks. The rooms and their theming are so stunning!

While you can stay in themed rooms on the Wish, you can’t really get that same perk on the Dream. Your Dream room will either include a veranda or no veranda. But otherwise, all of the rooms aboard the Disney Dream look the same. And hallway or deck theming is pretty consistent ship-wide.

And when it comes to comfort, the Wish won for me! I slept on a pull-out couch on both the Wish and the Dream, and let me tell you: The pull-out couch on the Wish is so much better. It’s so much more comfortable! It came with actual bedding and blankets. On the Dream, this wasn’t the case.

I wish the Skipper Lounge was themed to be an Adventurers’ Club. Kungaloosh! But Jungle Cruise theming is certainly great. All agree, I am sure, unless you are in de-Nile.
