Review: Duran Duran delights Tampa fans with epic Future Past Tour

  • Gabrielle Calise Times staff

TAMPA — On a screen hovering over the stage, keyboardist Nick Rhodes furiously tapped buttons inside a spaceship whizzing above the Earth. His bandmates wandered a futuristic cityscape, helmets in hand. Each disappeared from the video in a flash.

Seconds later — in person — the silhouetted members of Duran Duran stepped out before a screaming crowd at Amalie Arena. Against the fog: shoulder pads and tousled hair. A music video come to life.

What more would you expect from one of the biggest bands of the 1980s MTV era?

Duran Duran’s packed Saturday night show proved that, even after four-plus decades, the New Romantic superstars from across the pond still can get a crowd grooving. Named after the band’s 2021 album, the Future Past Tour had a little bit of both elements in its name — but mostly past. The nearly two-hour performance was dominated by chart-topping hits from decades ago.

“Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Rio” and “Notorious” all turned into dance parties. Duran Duran also dedicated a heartfelt “Ordinary World” to the people of Ukraine.

For the most part, vocalist Simon Le Bon sounded just as sensational as his recordings, though he had a few hoarse moments in the earlier songs. Having navigated vocal range issues in the past , he knew how to get back to smooth singing by midshow. In the meantime, he distracted the audience by bouncing around in a pair of shiny silver pants.

Plus, there were the video screens behind him.

Cheesy animated white doves soared over band members during “Save a Prayer.” Floating eyeballs and black-and-white horror movie clips flickered in the background for “Friends of Mine.”

“Scary baby time,” Le Bon announced before “Lonely in Your Nightmare.” The screens hovering above were overtaken by a giant lip-syncing baby doll. It was, indeed, scary — until the song melted into a funky cover of “Super Freak.”

The two openers showcased various slices of Duran Duran’s identity. Pop rock band Bastille offered representation from fellow Brits. Nile Rodgers and Chic laid the foundation for an evening of booty-shaking.

Rodgers has composed and produced for everyone from Beyonce to Diana Ross. Rocking a pink bell-bottom suit, he ran through some of his favorite collabs, including David Bowie hits “Let’s Dance” and “Modern Love” that got the whole arena moving. Since Rodgers also worked with Duran Duran over the years, one would hope he would pop back onstage with them. After all, he did in 2016. No such luck for Tampa this time.

Instead, synth god Rhodes layered a bouncy soundscape from behind a fortress of five keyboards. Backup singers in metallic red wrap dresses and go-go boots marched next to him, looking like a pair of Star Trek extras. Both Roger Taylor on drums and John Taylor on bass kept the arena thumping. And did we mention the numerous saxophone solos?

The pop stars, all in their 60s, still have that raunchy swagger. To kick off “Come Undone,” Le Bon noted the local humidity levels before asking, “Do you have a lot of sex in Florida?”

Later, camera clicks and strobe lights flashed into a mashup of “Girls on Film” and Calvin Harris’ “Acceptable in the 80s.”

“It was acceptable at the time!” Le Bon crooned, almost apologetically.

Duran Duran has been on a victory lap in the past few years, including a 2022 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Paramount+ announced it would air a new docu-concert from the band this month. Thank the pop gods for that.

Their live performance still feels like a music video you want to watch over and over again.

“You guys probably know that I write and produce the songs for this band,” said Nile Rodgers of Chic on stage in Chicago, opening up the current leg of Duran Duran’s “FUTURE PAST 40th Anniversary tour.” “But here’s a little secret: I do it for other artists too!”

Between Chic and his work writing, recording and/or producing artists like Duran Duran, David Bowie, Madonna and Daft Punk, Rodgers has had a hand in music responsible for the global sale of more than half a billion albums.

On stage in Chicago, Rodgers offered fans a masterclass in songwriting 101, running through the Chic canon in addition to cuts by artists like Diana Ross and the Sugarhill Gang.

Chic’s “Le Freak” came first, with Rodgers, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, backed by an eight piece group including a horn section and a pair of backing singers.

“Everybody Dance” followed, the Chicago faithful a step ahead, on their feet and moving throughout Chic’s 50 minute performance.

Rodgers pulled back and to his left, ceding center stage to his band, and his backing vocalists in particular, during a jubilant take on Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” moving into a medley of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” and “Material Girl” (both of which he played guitar on and produced).

“Now is the time to take it to maximum funkosity!” Rodgers asserted. “And I only know one way to do it! But I need everybody to participate,” he declared, soon channeling Stevie Ray Vaughan during a late solo as horns soared during David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.”

Responsible for worldwide sales in excess of 100 million, Duran Duran played for just shy of two hours on stage along Lake Michigan as the “FUTURE PAST” tour winds down.

“Chicago! How you doin’?” asked frontman Simon Le Bon rhetorically, Duran Duran digging deep for “Night Boat” to open the set.

Percussion stole the early portions of “The Wild Boys,” with the crowd shouting the song’s memorable chorus at Duran Duran while the bass of John Taylor thumped along in time. Stalking left and back, Le Bon ultimately hovered near keyboard player Nick Rhodes, Taylor leaning into him as the pair exchanged shouts.

“Look at that moon!” shouted Le Bon, introducing “Hungry Like the Wolf,” backing singers and live saxophone bringing to eight the number of performers on stage.

“OK. We’ve broken the ice,” mused Le Bon. “Now it’s time for us to bond!”

The theme to James Bond rang out as imagery from the films ran on a massive screen behind the band, the intro giving way to “A View to a Kill” as the hit parade continued, Le Bon bounding right as Taylor dove into the song’s trademark ascending disco bass line.

While they’re prepping next month’s release of their 16th studio album Danse Macabre , “GIVE IT ALL UP” made the case for Future Past , with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers working a bit of Rick James’ “Super Freak” into “Lonely in Your Nightmare” shortly thereafter.

Rhodes turned, playing a different keyboard with each hand as Duran Duran launched into “Is There Something I Should Know,” following up with a pair from 1993’s The Wedding Album .

“This is a song about self redemption…,” said Le Bon, setting up “Ordinary World.” “Living the life you’ve got, not the one you wanted - with all of its ups and downs,” he continued, dedicating the track to the people of both Maui and Ukraine. “Help them if you can,” he said, soon jousting vocally with singer Anna Ross on “Come Undone.”

“I want you to put on your best selfie face,” joked Le Bon, setting up “Girls On Film.” “Because Nick is going to take your photograph!” he continued, soon jogging in place on stage as if he was just getting started, Friday’s night’s show cruising toward the finish line in the Windy City.

Ultimately closing with “Rio,” Duran Duran returned from encore in contemplative fashion, offering up “Save a Prayer” on stage in Chicago.

“We would like you to reach into that most sacred of places and put a little light on us,” requested Le Bon of the audience. “It won’t use that much battery. I promise!” said the charismatic singer with a smile.

Strapping on an acoustic guitar, Le Bon was at his best late as Duran Duran wrapped up on stage.

“Chicago! Let me hear your voice!” said the singer. “That is the sound of a good time!”

For 40 minutes on stage at Huntington Bank Pavilion, French electropop outfit Bastille served as the bridge between Chic and Duran Duran.

“Chicago!” screamed founding singer and songwriter Dan Smith. “Are you excited for Duran Duran?” he asked to a deafening roar.

Bastille performs on stage at Huntington Bank Pavilion. Friday, September 1, 2023 in Chicago, IL

Opening with one of their biggest U.S. hits in “Good Grief,” Bastille put forth a fun, energetic opening set, live drums driving a crowd clap along during the rock leaning “WHAT YOU GONNA DO???”

Keyboards opened the more electronic based “Million Pieces,” Smith bounding from side to side on stage as drummer Chris Wood stood up behind his kit, sticks in the air as he took in the massive outdoor crowd during the song’s synth-driven chorus.

“Nile Rodgers and Chic…” marveled Smith. “Let’s hear it! An honor to share this stage with them and Duran Duran,” said the singer. “You’ve only got about another half hour of our music,” joked the singer during the opening set.

Chicago Concert Reviews

We’ve got the windy city covered., duran duran’s fab “future past” 40th, bastille’s “bad blood” and chic’s “good times” fill northerly.

Posted by Andy Argyrakis

Duran Duran

For a lesser band, a 40th anniversary celebration would be nothing more than a mere trip down memory lane, but when it comes to Duran Duran, there aren’t only one but two fresh batches of material to help tie all the decades together.

For starters, “Future Past” is a culmination of everything electronic and otherwise that’s come from the adored English act, released prior to “Danse Macabre,” a Halloween-themed collection of originals, re-workings and covers due out October 27.

Alongside all the requisite dance floor-fillers and ballads, front man Simon LeBon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, drummer Roger Taylor and their slick backing cast filled up the entire Huntington Bank Pavilion At Northerly Island with fans who were “Hungry Like The Wolf.”

Duran Duran

Given its steady schedule, the relatively recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees sounded tighter than ever, opening with the eerie rarity “Night Boat,” then assuring the cross-generational crowd they were still “The Wild Boys” capable of killer harmonies.

The icy “A View To A Kill” led the way towards the funky “Notorious,” while “GIVE IT ALL UP” and “ANNIVERSARY” ranked right up their with the contagious classics, though the guys were also quite compelling on the quieter “Ordinary World” and “Come Undone.”

The re-emergence of Grandmaster & Melle Mel’s “White Lines (Don’t Do It)” was a wonderfully welcome surprise, the obligatory “The Reflex” and “Girls On Film,” tied around “Acceptable In The 80’s,” resonated with renewed relevance, “Save A Prayer” prompted a sea of phone lights and the saxophone-drenched “Rio” served as a rousing conclusion to nearly two hours of humongous hits.

Right beforehand, Britain’s Bastille brought its pulsating brand of indie meets electronic rock, not necessarily sounding like Duran Duran, but surely scratching that itch for anyone looking for a newer example along those lines.

Duran Duran

The legendary Nile Rodgers & Chic got the sunny vibes going with soulful band classics “Le Freak,” “Everybody Dance” and “I Want Your Love,” followed by the front man’s many timeless productions, ranging from Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out” to Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” Madonna’s “Like A Virgin,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.”

Though he didn’t appear with Duran Duran, despite producing “Notorious,” it was nonetheless nothing but “Good Times” as disco balls glistened on the video screens and everyone got on down to the endless groove.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Duran Duran to Embark on ‘Future Past’ North American Tour

AFTER KICKING OFF 2023 with a New Year’s Eve performance in Times Square, Duran Duran will keep the live vibes going this spring when they embark on a North American tour in support of their latest LP Future Past .

Following a headlining gig at Napa Valley, California’s Bottlerock Festival, the trek kicks off May 28 in San Jose, California and slowly winds its way across the U.S. before concluding Sept. 19 in Toronto. Like the 2022 leg , Nile Rodgers and Chic serve as special guest throughout the tour, as well as Bastille.

“It’s remarkable to me that as a band, we are still hitting new milestones, and introducing the sound of DD to new generations of music lovers,” frontman Simon Le Bon said in a statement. “We are truly grateful that we get to do what we do on a daily basis, and that we still love our job as much as we did when we started out some four decades ago.”

Check out Duran Duran’s site for ticket information .

The Future Past Tour marks Duran Duran’s first trek since they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Music is itself an honor, something that all the artists being inducted tonight’s and previously have dedicated our lives to in order to achieve,” Le Bon said in his acceptance speech.  “In times that seem increasingly divisive, music is something which can overcome such issues as race, politics, and gender. Music brings people together. Over 40 years I’ve been working, I’ve come to believe that the essence of our job is this: We get to make people feel better about themselves. This an industry that I am proud to be a part of. Thank you.”
