Roger Daltrey Announces 2024 North American Solo Tour

Roger Daltrey Announces 2024 North American Solo Tour

Roger Daltrey has announced a North American solo tour for this June. Building on a previously announced May 6 engagement at San Diego, this run will bring the legendary frontman for The Who to nine further engagements in the Southeast, Northeast, Midwest and Canada between June 12 – 29. With support from an electric and acoustic band, Daltrey’s appearances have been hand-picked for intimate presentations of his classics and rarities, interspersed with live audience talk-back.

Daltrey’s summer run will begin with his only West Coast show of the year on May 6, which will present the artist onstage at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in San Diego a month before the official outset of his new tour. By June 12, Daltrey will fly to the Southeast to perform at Vienna, Va.’s vaunted Wolf Trap – Filene Center, followed by a trip across the northern border to Niagra Falls, Ontario for a June 14 set at OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino. Next, the artist will move on to the Northeast for a four-show sprint, highlighted by a June 18 engagement at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY and a June 20 presentation at Boston’s Leader Band Pavilion. Finally, on June 25, Daltrey will take Detroit for the first in a final three-night Midwest run, culminating with a June 29 performance at Highland Park, Ill.’s The Pavilion at Ravinia.

Daltrey’s performance will feature support from a nine-piece ensemble assembled by the icon, composed of Simon Townshend and Doug Boyle on guitar, Billy Nicholls on mandolin, John Hogg on bass, Katie Jacoby on violin, Geraint Watkins on keyboard and accordion, Steve Weston on harmonica and drummer Scott Devours, with additional percussion from Jody Linscott. These performances will also feature support from special guest singer-songwriters  KT Tunstall and Dan Bern. Between songs, the bandleader will share stories from his six decades of performance and answer questions posed by the audience.

WOW! He is 74 years old but you can't tell. He's still ripped. An awesome show in a beautiful old theater. So glad I could take my teenage son to see him before these legends are no more. He played lots of Who material as well as some of his own. Was a real treat!

Roger Daltrey Announces 'Live And Kicking' U.S. Solo Tour This Summer

By Andrew Magnotta @AndrewMagnotta

roger daltrey us tour

Roger Daltrey has announced a short run of solo tour dates this summer that will get him back onstage with members of The Who 's backing band.

Daltrey will perform a setlist of Who classics, album cuts and solo favorites during the jaunt. Three dates have been announced so far, but more announcements are coming soon.

Roger Daltrey 'Live and Kicking' Tour

Aug. 21 - Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys, Stateline, NV

Sep. 01 - Northern Quest Resort & Casino, Spokane, WA

Sep. 03 - Washington State Fair, Puyallup, WA

Daltrey has been eager to tour as much as possible in recent years. He explained his general sense of urgency in a 2019 interview with Billboard , saying "within the next five years I think my voice will go. Age will get it in the end."

The pandemic shutdowns have reportedly made Daltrey all the more restless. Longtime bandmate Pete Townshend recently told Rolling Stone that getting back onstage in front of an audience is all the singer can talk about.

"When I speak to him, he just goes, 'I just wanna get out there and sing!'" Townshend said of is partner. "'I can't use my voice! It's my instrument! If I don't use it, I'll die!'"

Townshend himself is closely watching the economics of post-pandemic touring. He says the next few years may be difficult for classic acts like The Who . Venues and promoters have lost so much money during the shutdowns that they will likely book whatever acts will sell tickets the quickest — those are generally younger acts with younger fans, he explained.

Depending on how more fiscally conservative fans behave in these uncertain times, that might make it difficult for bands like The Who to make up canceled dates or add new ones.

He added that if The Who gets an opportunity to get back on tour soon, the band will take it.

Roger Daltrey is doubtful The Who will 'ever come back to tour America'

roger daltrey us tour

Toward the end of The Who’s 2019 concert at Wembley Stadium, Roger Daltrey hauls out the depths of his voice for “Love, Reign O’er Me.”

It’s a breathtaking moment not only because of the song’s classic status from 1973’s “Quadrophenia” rock opera, but also because of what it represents: Roger Daltrey can still belt.

“I screw myself into a ball and whatever comes out, comes out,” Daltrey, 79, says of his approach to the song. “It’s the primal feeling more than the notes.”

That show – the first time The Who headlined Wembley in 40 years – is captured on the new “ The Who with Orchestra: Live at Wembley .” The 20 songs, from set opener “Who Are You” to a raucous “Baba O'Riley,” are vigorously delivered by Daltrey , co-Who maestro and guitarist Pete Townshend, their longtime cast of touring musicians including Simon Townshend on guitar and Zak Starkey on drums, and on most tracks, a 50-piece orchestra.

A few months after the Wembley concert, Daltrey underwent vocal cord surgery to preserve his muscular singing. He says he's fine now, under the watchful maintenance of his longtime surgeon at Mass General in Boston.

In addition to The Who’s latest live opus, Daltrey just spearheaded the annual Teenage Cancer Trust concert to benefit the namesake U.K. charity he’s championed since 2000, enlisting performances from British musicians Richard Ashcroft, Jake Bugg and Wet Leg (“They just have something fresh,” Daltrey said of the recent Grammy winners ).

In conversation, the engaging frontman is alternately jokey and reflective as he talks about The Who at its live peak, the chaos of internet debates and why the band will likely never tour America again.

Question: This album has a different feel to it, even compared to The Who’s other live recordings. Is it just the way the orchestra gelled with the band at this particular show?

Answer: Why it works together is we’re playing better than ever. We can hear what we have to turn down – not that it’s quieter out front (in the audience), but quieter on stage and we’re letting the PA system do the volume. The Who has always been best as a live group, and we’re still flying the flag for that and I think we’re still doing a good job of it.

Why do you think you’re playing better than ever now?

We’re enjoying it. You know, Pete can’t quite jump 10 foot in the air anymore. He can do 3 foot, so he’s not bad! (Laughs) I don’t swing the microphone hardly at all now because it doesn’t matter to the sound anymore. Before, when all of those things used to work, it was a circus act. We’re more than that now. I’m proud that our music has come of age and I think you could say this is the most modern classical music out there. When I did the classical version of “Tommy” (in 2019), I realized “Tommy” is one of the best operas ever written. Underneath those classic rock songs he wrote, Pete always wrote in a classical form.

There are many highlights on this album, especially the horns on “Pinball Wizard” and “Ball and Chain.”

The most important thing about this album is to try to hear it on vinyl on a stereo system – that’s when you get the total benefit of real instruments. There’s something about a real instrument, the way it reacts with a human ear and the human body, it creates a whole different feel to a synthesized instruments. You can have synthesized strings, but it won’t do the same to your emotion as a proper violin or a proper cello would. There’s something about a real orchestra that makes your hair stand on end.

You’re doing The Who Hits Back shows in Europe this summer. Any plans to return to the U.S.?

Nothing at the moment. I don’t know if we’ll ever come back to tour America . There is only one tour we could do, an orchestrated "Quadrophenia” to round out the catalog. But that’s one tall order to sing that piece of music, as I’ll be 80 next year. I never say never, but at the moment it’s very doubtful.

Touring has become very difficult since COVID. We cannot get insured and most of the big bands doing arena shows, by the time they do their first show and rehearsals and get the staging and crew together, all the buses and hotels, you’re upwards $600,000 to a million in the hole. To earn that back, if you’re doing a 12-show run, you don’t start to earn it back until the seventh or eighth show. That’s just how the business works. The trouble now is if you get COVID after the first show, you’ve (lost) that money.

Pete makes some comments  on the new album about activism before “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” basically that a musician’s job is to play and leave the activism to the activists. Where do you stand on activism?

It’s all right as long as it keeps its head; there’s a little too much of it now. What worries me more than anything in the world is the shutting down of open debate, mainly through bullying on the internet. It’s aggressive bullying. All of the big issues society has to face, like climate change, they’ve shut down one side of that debate and science is not about shutting things down, it’s about opening them up. I am amazed at the size of our ego, the human race, the tiny whatever we are on this planet, but we’re going to control the temperature? Whose leg are you pulling? But you’re not allowed to talk about it or you’ll be a right-wing fascist or you’re a left-wing fanatic and that’s incredibly dangerous. All the internet has done is make us appreciate things a lot less. As far as social media goes, some of it is like the seeds of the end of civilization.

The Who frontman will perform hits and rarities at New York area shows.

Roger Daltrey is hitting the road with an electric/acoustic band this summer. The co-founder and lead singer of The Who had stated just last year  that The Who would probably won't tour the U.S. again due to financial reasons. He also stated this past January when discussing The Who, that that part of his life is over . Whether or not The Who will ever tour the U.S. again remains to be seen, but one thing is clear, and that is that Roger Daltrey will be touring with a solo band playing the music of The Who.

The Who formed out of London, England in 1964 with the classic lineup featuring Roger Daltrey on vocals, Pete Townshend on guitar, bassist John Entwistle, and drummer Keith Moon. They are considered to be one of the most influential rock bands of all time, with over 100 million records sold worldwide. Hit singles from The Who include “I Can’t Explain”, “My Generation”, “Substitute”, “Pinball Wizard”, “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again”.

The Who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Festival appearances by The Who including Woodstock and their live concert album,  Live at Leeds  (1970), established their reputation as a respected rock act. Their last studio album was  Who  in 2019.

Roger Daltrey ANNOUNCES SPECIAL SEMI-ACOUSTIC U.S. TOUR IN JUNE

Article contributed by firefly media | published on monday, march 18, 2024.

roger daltrey us tour

Roger Daltrey - legendary rock icon and co-founder of one of music’s most inspirational and influential forces, The Who , will be returning to the States on a special solo tour this June, presenting a mostly acoustic set of Who gems, rarities, solo nuggets and other surprises with an intimate rock-based band and setting as well as answering questions from the audience, kicking off this very exclusive set of shows on June 12th at Virginia’s renowned Wolf Trap Filene Center. The nine-city run will continue throughout the month of June (see dates below), wrapping on June 29th at The Pavilion at Ravinia in Highland Park, Illinois.

Special guests for the much-anticipated performances include Grammy-nominated Scottish singer/songwriter KT Tunstall and acclaimed, offbeat singer/songwriter Dan Bern.   The unique venues and amphitheaters Daltrey has chosen for his summer run will showcase Daltrey’s acoustic interpretations of his extraordinary canon of Who songs and solo work, supported by a hand-picked ensemble of musicians. Simon Townshend – guitar, Billy Nicholls – mandolin, Jody Linscott – percussion, Doug Boyle – guitar, John Hogg – Bass, Katie Jacoby – violin, Steve Weston – harmonica, Geraint Watkins – keyboards/accordion, Scott Devours – Drums.

Daltrey’s return to the States follows The Who’s incredibly successful THE WHO HITS BACK! Tour of 2022, with the band’s incomparable frontman drawing praise from all media platforms, including the Dallas Morning News, which said, ‘Daltrey took flight…roaring and howling and ripping his mic cord through the air like he was lassoing cattle…’ The charismatic singer also brought a highly successful solo tour to the States in 2018 via a 10-city run that showcased The Who’s legendary rock opera TOMMY, supported by full orchestral backing.  Never content to rest on his laurels, the adventurous artist will continue to peel back the layers on his upcoming June tour, excited about expressing more musical shades of his solo palette, which he has generously shared with audiences in the U.S. and beyond throughout his career.

Also known to be one of rock’s more candid, straight-shooters, the working-class Daltrey (originally from London’s Shepherd’s Bush) will answer questions from the audience during the shows, sharing anecdotes and offering up uniquely tailored renditions of songs seldom performed live either by The Who or Daltrey. In crafting this completely new show set to kick off in June 2024, Daltrey looks forward to unveiling one of his more intimate and unique stage shows, an up close and personal gift to his fans that highlights Who rarities, solo hits, and other songs from his incredible near 60-year career.

Roger Daltrey, Teenage Cancer Trust’s Honorary Patron and co-founder of Teen Cancer America (with Pete Townshend) recently added harmonica to a historic recording. On March 15, Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler released a new, special recording of his anthemic composition, “Going Home (Theme From Local Hero)” featuring over 60 of the finest rock performers ever assembled on one iconic track, including members of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Dire Straits, The Who, Pink Floyd, Queen, Black Sabbath, Rush, Guns N’ Roses, and many more. The milestone release, currently available to order, will raise funds for Teen Cancer America and its UK equivalent Teenage Cancer Trust .

UPDATE! 24 JUNE 2021

I hope to re-book them in the near future, and to those of you who have bought tickets, please accept my sincere apologies.   I do appreciate your support and can’t wait to get back to work once the time is right.”

I think it is nice to keep up the spirits and sound of a great music band. I have been to a Who music concert in Tampa Florida it was a great concert but a sad ending for the bass player John it was his last gig. They performed great. Pete Townsend was a great guitar playing and vocals too. Zack Starkey did a great job playing the drums that night too. I wish you lots of luck with your tour. 😊

' src=

Roger, nothing in Portland?? So close. 😫

' src=

Play”Free Me”

' src=

Looking forward to seeing you in NY.

Hoping Pete eventually tours again with you or even alone. A full performance of Quadrophenia with all of you guys would be an amazing follow up to the last concert I’ve been to in too many years (May 2019 at MSG – my then 12yo’s FIRST concert ever 😉 Classy, huh?)

' src=

Love you Roger!! Glad you’re back. But I gotta ask…where’s Pete??

' src=

Great news! Will there be any UK dates?

I have been a big fan of The Who for 50 years so glad to see Roger hitting the road again but it makes me concerned about what Pete is up to? I hope he is healthy. I also hope they are not feuding. There is no band that has the talent like The Who

' src=

Please think about booking a show at the Lakeview Ampitheater in Syracuse, New York. I am a a huge fan but as an IATSE Stagehand I have been out of work for 14 months and would not be able to afford to go see you at this time. I would love to finally work one of your shows.

For everyone thinking Roger touring is a sign that there will never be another tour with Pete again I disagree. Roger does these tours usually as a way to get his voice in shape for either a Who tour or and album. It’s like an athlete doing training.

Excited about this, luckily with a little help from a friend when pre sale for this show started we scored first row tickets for Tahoe. We are traveling from Atlanta, I only travel great distances for 2 bands & The Who is one of those 2. My friend who is joining me is reaching the 100 mark for Who concerts all around the world. During this pandemic I at least had the memory of Rock Legends Cruise VIII & all 3 performances especially the last 1 on Deck, on your birthday, March 1 2020. I was the 1 who assembled the letters that spelled out “HAPPY BIRTHDAY “ & gave you 3 birthday cards at the photo op. Thank you. Thanks to everyone in the band. I’m extremely excited !!!

Thanks for recently reaching out to all of your fans on 4/28/21 on YouTube, courtesy of Apple Music. (Pete Townshend & Roger Daltrey: ‘The Who Sell Out’ Released in 1967 and their Legacy | Apple Music). Refreshing interview, always a good story in there, and great to see your healthy, smiling faces. Highly recommend it!

I don’t know about “Lockdown Blues”. 😂 Maybe pass on that one.

Great you are touring, considering the effort and cost involved., but glad to hear your train keeps on rolling.

You both are loved! Stay well.

What about UK or Germany?

' src=

Hi sad to miss out on the 2020 and re organised 2021 show at Wembley. Hope that Roger and Pete get to do another UK tour soon. My last concert was Tommy at Royal Albert Hall and all I can say it was the best I have ever seen them play and their own enjoyment rubbed off on us all there. To do all of Tommy and then with no breaks another 45 mins of there back catalogue was absolutely amazing. I am 74 now and hope to see them again.

' src=

pls come To montreal qc.

' src=

Come play in Boston, MA, USA!!!

' src=

How about a live, on-line concert!! I would certainly pay for such an event. I’m sure WHO fans all over the world would respond, and it would be as profitable as a whole tour….How about it Pete and Roger??

' src=

Would love to see you in Chicago. However, if you can’t make it here, I’ll be going mobile to another city. You guys are now, and always will be, the greatest band when I need to rock!

' src=

And Toronto! I was at the final WHO concert at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1982! I was way up in the cheap seats. I Thought that that would be it but we have been graced by your performances in 1989 and more recently up in Orillia!

' src=

Roge, we connected briefly at one of you Boston shows with Pete. Lifelong fan here. You are amazing. Please come back as we love you here… Boston Strong!

' src=

Many would love it if you had dates on the East Coast; especially North Carolina.

Please come to Atlanta, GA……….

The Who’s Roger Daltrey at 80: “I have to be realistic. I’m on my way out”

"The average life expectancy is 83 and with a bit of luck I’ll make that, but we need someone else to drive things”

Roger Daltrey

The Who ’s Roger Daltrey has reflected on recently turning 80, saying that “he has to be realistic” and that he is “on the way out”.

Writing in a “backstage diary” for The Times , the iconic singer expressed his desire to slow down, after recently wrapping up his last year as the active curator of the Teenage Cancer Trust series of shows.

“I have to be realistic,” he wrote. “I’m on my way out. The average life expectancy is 83 and with a bit of luck I’ll make that, but we need someone else to drive things.”

“I’m not leaving TCT – I’ve been a patron since I first met the charity’s founders, Dr Adrian and Myrna Whiteson, more than 30 years ago – and that will continue, but I’ll be working in the back room, talking to the government, rattling cages.”

Roger Daltrey

He also opened up about feeling nerves ahead of his recent shows: “We haven’t done anything for seven months and this winter’s been brutal. I’ve been in hibernation. For the whole of January, I lost my voice completely.”

“I live like a monk and if I went on tour for a week I’d be fit as a butcher’s dog again, but tonight, for the first time in my career, I think, ‘Blimey, this is hard.’”

It comes after Daltrey recently announced a new “semi-acoustic” solo tour of North America , which will take place across nine dates in June. Any remaining tickets can be found here .

In January, Daltrey gave an interview about the future of The Who , in which he said he was “happy” that “that part of my life is over” , before clarifying that ultimately any decision about calling it a day would have to be made alongside  Pete Townshend .

Daltrey confirmed he was standing down at the curator for the Teenage Cancer Trust’s concert series in January, having helmed the project for 24 years. To mark the occasion, he rounded off the series himself with a show on March 24 .

Paul McCartney and Nile Rodgers sent a video message thanking Daltrey for his work with the non-profit organisation. McCartney introduced himself as “Paul here, your friend of a million years,” before going on to include a song in his speech.

“Thank you for your 24 years of incredible service to Teenage Cancer. You’ve made so many kids happy and healthier and all of us connected with it want to thank you, so much,” he began. “So what we say is… [sings] thank you Roger, thank you so, you’re a hero and you better know… That’s one of the best songs I’ve ever written.”

The Who  opened the TCT’s series this year with a huge orchestral show,  with revised arrangements of tracks such as ‘Pinball Wizard’, ‘Overture’ and ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ from 1969 rock opera ‘Tommy’.

NME  spoke to Daltrey in March 2023  about his work for the TCT, where he said the money raised had funded 29 age-specific specialist units in NHS hospitals across the UK. “We’ve done remarkably well, but it’s not to say we can’t do better,” he explained.

Daltrey will still be an Honorary Patron of the charity, despite stepping down as curator of its annual concert series.

Facing the exit: Roger Daltrey's reflections on aging, transition, and musical legacy

A ge is often viewed merely as a number, but for Roger Daltrey, the iconic frontman of The Who , who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, it symbolizes a significant juncture, hinting at his inevitable departure from the limelight. He has put it bluntly : "I’m on my way out." On that note, Daltrey bid farewell to his role as the driving force behind the annual Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) gigs at the Royal Albert Hall, a position he held for an impressive 24 years.

In a candid reflection shared in a backstage diary for The Times , he acknowledged, perhaps more than partially heartbroken, that he has to face the reality of inching towards the exit. He noted that, while statistical life expectancy suggests he might at least reach 83, he recognizes the need for someone else to take the reins. Though he has the look of someone capable of delaying aging, and no doubt brought his best energy level to performances for The Who, and otherwise, nothing lasts forever.

Despite stepping down from the forefront of the charity, he emphasized his ongoing commitment to TCT, vowing to continue his advocacy work behind the scenes, engaging with governmental bodies and championing the cause. Acknowledging his apprehension prior to recent performances, Daltrey confessed to feeling the weight of the stage after a hiatus of seven months, exacerbated by a grueling winter that silenced his voice for an entire January.

A sad event for Roger Daltry in 2023, but courageously moving forward

In 2023, Daltrey actually had to leave the stage mid-performance, which he certainly didn't want to do, telling concertgoers : "I'm going to do myself some serious damage here and I'm not going to do it because I'll never sing again! I'm sorry! You'll have to ask for refunds. I'll try and make it up to you. I'm really, really sorry. I am not a robot! I am definitely not a robot! I'm not doing this to myself anymore. Thank you so much for coming."

Since then, he's suggested that living like a recluse during a period has left him feeling somewhat out of practice, reflecting on the unique challenges of returning to the spotlight. In contemplating the future of The Who, Daltrey entertained the idea of bidding adieu to the band that has been a cornerstone of his career alongside Pete Townshend.

"I’m happy saying that part of my life is over," he said .

The next step for The Who fans

Thoygh some might be saddened by Roger and Pete having "a serious conversation" about finishing the band, there's something to be said about having enough courage to concede that things aren't how they once were. Hinting at a potential conclusion to their musical partnership by a certain point is fair. Perhaps there are some who struggle to bear the change, but it's inevitable that things will end at some point.

In the interim, and on a more cheerful note: Enthusiasts of Daltrey's artistry can anticipate his upcoming "semi-acoustic" solo tour across North America, scheduled for June of 2024. Tickets are readily available through The Who's official website, promising an intimate experience with the legendary performer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.

Beyond that, who knows? Maybe The Who will reunite at some point anyway. After all, rock bands are rather notorious for announcing retirements, and then reforming. Still, there's something to being able to just say "Goodbye. It was magical while it lasted." Recall that Ozzy Osbourne has delivered similar news recently, as he was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a second time.
