Watch Tom Cruise Casually Throw Himself Out of a Plane for Fun
Let it be a reminder that the next 'Mission: Impossible' movie is on the way.
After reprising the role of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in this year's blockbuster sequel Top Gun: Maverick , Tom Cruise is once again returning to another one of his iconic characters, super-spy Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise. And he just promoted that new movie by sharing a special behind-the-scenes message while filming one of his latest stunts—jumping out of a plane.
"Hey everyone, here we are over stunning South Africa, and we’re filming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, parts one and two," says Cruise in a new video clip on Twitter. "I didn’t want the year to end without thanking you all for coming out to the theaters, and thank you for supporting Top Gun: Maverick ."
At this point, Cruise turns the camera to show that filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie , who is directing Dead Reckoning after working with Cruise as a writer and producer on Maverick , is also in the plane with him. McQuarrie informs him that "we've got to get this shot," and so Cruise casually jumps out of the plane, while continuing to speak to the camera.
"As always, thank you for allowing us to entertain you," he says. "It truly is the honor of a lifetime. I’m running out of altitude, so I’ve got to get back to work. We’ve got to get this shot. You have a very safe and happy holiday. We’ll see you at the movies."
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, Part 1 will be released on July 14, 2023.

Watch Tom Cruise pull a Mission: Impossible 7 death-defying airplane stunt on set for PSA
Standing on a biplane while flying over a canyon in South Africa is a typical day in the life of Cruise.
We don't have to wait for Tom Cruise 's next movie to see another daredevil stunt from this Hollywood adrenaline junkie.
Footage of a video PSA that Cruise recorded for Las Vegas-hosted CinemaCon attendees back in April has found its way online. The actor, who was promoting Top Gun: Maverick at the time, recorded a message while standing on a moving biplane while it was flying over a canyon in South Africa, where he and director Christopher McQuarrie was filming were shooting Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One .
"Hey everyone! Wish I could be there with you," Cruise begins as he smiles for the camera mid-flight. "I'm sorry about the extra noise. As you can see, we're filming the latest installment of Mission: Impossible right now. And right now we're over the gorgeous Blyde River Canyon in stunning South Africa. And we're making this film for the big screen, for the audiences to see in your wonderful theaters."
McQuarrie then makes a cameo. Flying his own biplane, he pulls up beside Cruise's craft to say they are "losing the light" and need to go back to filming.
The video has gained traction on social media and was shared by, among others, actor and director Stephen Ford.
The PSA originally screened at CinemaCon ahead of a surprise screening of Top Gun: Maverick , which has since become Cruise's highest-grossing movie to date after debuting for the public in theaters in May.
EW got a driver's seat view of just how intense some of the stunts Cruise pulls off can be. Simon Pegg, one of Cruise's Mission: Impossible co-stars, had previously said in June that he gets "the willies" seeing the actor do what he does.
"There's a frisson you get when there's authenticity: the idea that this guy is actually jumping off a cliff on a motorbike and deploying the parachute 100 feet from the ground?" Pegg said. "It puts the willies up you."
If this PSA is just a taste of what Cruise will do in the seventh Mission: Impossible movie, there will be plenty more willies to be had.

Stunt king Tom Cruise has jumped out of yet another plane
Trust Tom Cruise to give us the kind of Christmas message that only he could. While shooting the upcoming Mission Impossible sequel on Sunday in South Africa, Dead Reckoning Part One , the 60-year-old (!!) used the opportunity of a high-flying skydiving sequence to thank fans for their support of Top Gun: Maverick , as if his movie star bona fides could ever be in question.
“I didn't want the year to end without thanking you all for coming out to the theatres, and thank you for supporting Top Gun: Maverick ,” he shouts over a hefty bit of wind crackle. He's joined by Christopher McQuarrie, the director of both Dead Reckoning instalments. “Hey everybody — hey listen, we've really gotta roll, we've gotta get this shot,” he yells, tapping his imaginary watch. Then, with a fist bump, Cruise jumps out of the plane… backwards.
“Where was I? Oh yeah — thank you for supporting Top Gun: Maverick , and always, thank you for allowing us to entertain you,” Cruise continues, albeit this time falling through the sky, typically unphased. “It truly is the honour of a lifetime. Yeah. Very lucky. I'm running out of altitude so we've gotta go back to work, we've gotta get this shot. You have a very safe and happy holiday. We'll see you at the movies!”

Yeah, it's about as Tom Cruise a festive dispatch as you could get, isn't it? Moonpig left in the mud.
No wonder Cruise and Co. are so ecstatic about Maverick 's success: it's all but confirmed to end the year as the highest grossing movie in the United States, having become the fifth highest-grossing film of all-time there behind the likes of Avatar and Avengers: Endgame , and indeed worldwide. Even Big James Cameron couldn't pip him to the post at the death (though Avatar: The Way of Water has already made a respectable $434 million worldwide in its opening weekend).
So what's next for The Mav? It's looking good at the Oscars in February: named as one of the top ten films of the year by the American Film Institute, with nominations for Golden Globes and at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, expect the Top Gun sequel to be in the running for the big one come 2023. Whether or not Val Kilmer gets it for Best Movie Cameo of All Time, Ever is yet to be seen. As for Cruise — it's time for space .

Tom Cruise hangs upside down on World War Two plane for Mission: Impossible stunt
Tom Cruise performs a 'spectacular stunt' in South Africa, reveals movie's director.
Tom Cruise is shooting a crazy plane stunt in South Africa for Mission: Impossible 8 , it’s been revealed.
The Hollywood star, who plays Ethan Hunt in the hugely popular film franchise, is well known for his love of performing his own stunts. Cruise, who’ll soon be seen in Tom Gun: Maverick , actually originally rehearsed the scene in the UK back in 2021.
Now, he’s been busy shooting the real scene which involves him hanging upside down on the wing of an airplane!
The plane in question is a yellow World War Two biplane and Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie promises it’s “spectacular”.
“We’re shooting this aerial sequence that’s pretty spectacular,” he told Empire magazine.
“It’s like Dick Tracy, all primary colours. One plane is yellow, one plane is red. Africa is green, because it’s [the] raining season, and the sky is unbelievably blue. I’ve never shot anything like it.”
Cruise actually holds a helicopter and a fixed-wing pilot’s license. He reportedly learned how to fly planes for the Mission Impossible films.

Tom Cruise Thanks ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Mission: Impossible’ Fans for Their Support – Then Jumps Out of a Plane (Video)
“I’m running out of altitude, so I’ve got to get back to work,” the superstar says as he plummets to Earth
Tom Cruise is falling hard for his “Mission: Impossible” fans. Literally.
If there was any doubt that Cruise does his own stunts, his latest video posted on social media Sunday should settle it. In it, the “Top Gun: Maverick” superstar sits in the open doorway of a plane, his body hanging out and his hair blowing wildly.
“Hey, everyone. Here we are over stunning South Africa, and we’re filming ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ Parts 1 and 2,” Cruise yells to overpower the sound of the plane, his voice distorting in the wind. “I didn’t want the year to end without thanking you all for coming out to the theaters, and thank you for supporting ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’”
You can check it out in the video above.
There’s a tap on his shoulder that turns out to be “Dead Reckoning” director, Christopher McQuarrie, who tells Cruise, “Hey, listen, we really have got to roll. We’ve got to get this shot.”
With that, Cruise turns his back to the open air, leans back and falls out of the plane, all while a camera remains close on him. Smiling as his body plummets to the South African coastline below, he says, “As always, thank you for allowing us to entertain you. It truly is the honor of a lifetime.”
With the land below getting close, he pivoted his greeting. “I’m running out of altitude, so I’ve got to get back to work. We’ve got to get this shot. You have a very safe and happy holiday. We’ll see you at the movies.”
And with that, he tucks in his legs as his body spins rapidly down.
Cruise has gone on to produce and star in all eight “Mission Impossible” films. “Mission Impossible: Dark Reckoning Part 1” will also star Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby and Henry Czerny. The Paramount production will be released in theaters on July 14, 2023, with its follow-up, “Mission Impossible: Dark Reckoning Part 1” scheduled to be released on June 28, 2024.
His latest film, “Top Gun: Maverick” marks his highest-grossing movie ever. With $1.48 billion grossed worldwide and a Paramount-record $716 million grossed in North America, “Maverick” stands among the Top 5 highest grossing films in domestic box office history.
“Top Gun: Maverick” can be seen on Paramount+ starting Thursday, Dec. 22.

Tom Cruise Sits on Wing of Biplane Filming Next 'Mission: Impossible' Movie
Tom Cruise reportedly performed the mid-air stunt to introduce a trailer for Mission: Impossible 7 at CinemaCon in April
Tom Cruise is pushing the boundaries again.
On Sunday, footage surfaced of Cruise, 60, reportedly filming a stunt for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One on top of a World War II-era biplane as it flew over South Africa's Blyde River Canyon.
"Hi everyone! Wish I could be there with you - I'm sorry for all the extra noise," Cruise says in the video, reportedly shown at CinemaCon in April . "As you can see, we are filming the latest installment of Mission: Impossible , and right now we are over gorgeous Blyde Canyon in stunning South Africa."
In the video, Cruise asserts that "we're making this film for the big screen for audiences to see in your wonderful theaters," until director Christopher McQuarrie flies into view on a second biplane and warns the actor they have to return to filming due to lowering light levels and low fuel.
"Oh yeah, we gotta roll, huh? Low on fuel, that's not good. I'm sorry, we've got to go," Cruise announces before McQuarrie yells "action!" and the two planes speed away, with Cruise still crouching on top of his red biplane.
Cruise is well known for performing his own dramatic stunts. In August, he was spotted filming a helicopter action sequence at a "very remote" and "quite hilly" region of Lake District National Park in northwest England by dog-walking husband-and-wife pair Jason and Sarah Haygarth.
Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
"Toward the end of the walk, last peak, we start seeing helicopters coming up a ravine and dropping people off the top… We were like, this didn't seem right," Jason told Extra .
"We found out the people, they were the cameramen," he continued. "When we came to the peak, we got stopped by what must have been a production team member, saying, 'You can't go. We're going to land the helicopter off the top…' So we took a selfie."
It turned out Cruise was in the middle of filming one of his daring stunt sequences for the upcoming film.
After Sarah and Jason got the all-clear to continue their hike, the couple stumbled on Cruise "strapping himself into a paraglider."
"I could tell it was him straight away," Sarah told Extra . "By the time we got there, people were talking about Mission: Impossible was being filmed… but I was expecting a stunt double."
"He apologized first for the noise. 'Sorry, guys, I know we spoiled your walk with the noise,'" Jason said Cruise told them. Added Sarah, "And then he said, 'I like your dog.'"
"We asked, 'What are you doing?' Then he said, 'I'm going to jump off.' I was like, 'You're going to do what ?'" Jason recounted. "Just before he jumped off, he said, 'See ya! Hopefully, this goes well,' and we said, 'Good luck, Tom.'"
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 , the franchise's seventh installment, is scheduled for release in July 2023.

Cape Town – “Here we are over stunning South Africa,” Tom Cruise said, as he was preparing to dive from a plane through the beautiful sky SA has to offer, thanking those who went out to the cinema in support of his latest movie Top Gun Maverick .

Watch: incredible tom cruise airplane stunt cinemacon promo video.
by Alex Billington September 5, 2022 Source: YouTube
"As you can see, we are filming the latest installment of Mission Impossible." Hell yes, Tom Cruise!! This is awesome. During the industry event CinemaCon held earlier this year, Tom Cruise sent in a video message since he couldn't be there in person. Why? Because he was filming a big stunt for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two , involving two old bi-planes flying over a valley in South Africa. Though there was also a third plane filming him, as Cruise is standing on the side of one talking through the mic to the audience about making these movies to be shown in cinemas. So cool. This video then lead to the first trailer reveal for Dead Reckoning: Part One - which we featured back in May earlier this year. It's exciting that this video has finally made its way online because holy shit everything about this rules. I was honestly expecting Cruise to jump off with a parachute at the end of his intro, but even without that this is still badass. The first Dead Reckoning is set for release next summer , with Part Two set for 2024. Can't wait to see more footage!!
Here's the CinemaCon 2022 promo for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning , direct from YouTube :
This video was released initially as a Prime Video exclusive as a Special Feature for Top Gun: Maverick.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is the seventh installment of the Mission: Impossible film series, and the third in the series directed by McQuarrie, following Rogue Nation and Fallout. Ethan Hunt returns with his regular team for more covert missions around the world to save us all from mayhem and destruction. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is once again directed by American filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie , director of the movies The Way of the Gun , Jack Reacher , plus both Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation & Fallout previously. The screenplay is also written by Christopher McQuarrie. Based on the television series created by Bruce Geller. Produced by Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams, Christopher McQuarrie, David Ellison, and Jake Myers. Paramount Pictures will debut McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One in theaters worldwide starting on July 14th, 2023 next summer (delayed from this year). Part Two will then arrive in theaters starting in June 2024. Rewatch the first teaser trailer here .

How tom cruise’s olympics stunt was inspired by… conan o’brien.

Ben Winston might soon lose count of how many times he’s sent Tom Cruise up in the air.

The original plan was for a balaclava-clad stunt person to do most of the heavy lifting, but Cruise would have none of it. “I don’t think there’s anybody like him in the world,” says Winston, who served as creative director and executive producer under the Fulwell 73 Productions banner. “There is no better collaborator.”
Speaking the afternoon after the live Paris jump and the starry beachside concert featuring The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, Winston revealed how he and Cruise kept most of their plan under wraps for as long as they did, what changed in the planning and the unlikely roots of the Olympic flag’s pre-taped journey from France to the U.S.
Are you just a glutton for logistics?
It feels a little bit like having a baby. You’re up all night, it’s all really stressful and you’re changing nappies, and they’re sick on you. Then, when they get to three years old, you’re like, “Oh, they’re so cute and lovely. I think I want another one.” You forget what a nightmare it was. I feel like live television might be that. You forget how much you go through.
Plenty has been revealed and speculated about in the wake of this stunt. How long have you actually been working on this?
My first meeting was January 2022 when I sat down with Casey Wasserman at LA28. I haven’t been working on it since then, but I had the idea more like 20 months ago when they’d told me there’s this tradition of a 12-minute show that the next nation does in the closing ceremony. Within the first five minutes, I was like, “Well, it would be the coolest thing if we snatched the flag, and we could get Tom Cruise to do it.”
I’ve seen lots of handovers where the country that takes over does something in the stadium, and they’ve been great, but I wanted to do something different. I like to be able to control everything. So I was thinking if we did it in Los Angeles, I’d be able to control all the elements a little bit more. I liked the idea of doing the bulk of it in Los Angeles but with an amazing open in Paris. This is such a weird reference, but remember when Conan O’Brien started on The Tonight Show and moved from New York to Los Angeles? He did a really fun sketch going cross country. That has always stuck with me. So I was like, “How do Tom Cruise and all these incredible athletes take that flag from Paris to L.A.?” It’s a weird inspiration.
No, I remember that. I can see the through-line.
Yeah. Then, I pitched it to Tom. He was the first pitch I had. If he hadn’t gone with it, I can’t really think who else would work. Who else is synonymous with action and an American hero? When we got Tom, I felt like the whole thing would work — so we went from there. But it’s been over a year and a half to achieve that.
How’d you pitch it to Tom? This is the third time you’ve put him in a plane after the Late Late Show segments with Corden .
Some things leaked , but you filmed the skydive and the Hollywood sign back in March. How’d you keep it secret for as long as you did?
When we were filming with Tom , he was never actually holding the Olympic flag. He always was holding a white flag. So, whenever we were photographed with him, the press always said we were filming Mission Impossible . Everyone wonders what was faked and what wasn’t. Interestingly, one of the only things that was faked was the flag. I was disappointed that little things leaked over the last couple of weeks. Suddenly, more and more people need to know what you’re doing when you’re rehearsing in the Stade de France and booking venues.
Such a big deal is made about Tom and the lengths he goes to execute a stunt on his own. I understand who insures him in a movie like Mission Impossible , but what about here, is that your purview? You are putting a very famous man in a risky situation.
I’m not qualified to answer that. ( Laughs .) There will be a team of lawyers on my production team and his team that would know about that. But you’re right. It was definitely a consideration when we were doing the Top Gun stuff for The Late Late Show . It was like, “Well, who does the liability lie with — the show or Tom?” I still don’t know the answer on this one.
It’s funny because I’ve seen reports about what was live and what wasn’t live. Not everybody’s a 100 percent right on everything, and I don’t want to comment either way. It’s not fair on some artists to say some were live and some weren’t or whatever. But I think there was a lot more live-in there than people think. Will Rogers Beach was the plan a year ago — and, due to something out of my control, that had to change. With four weeks to go, we didn’t have a venue. That was a stressful moment. Ultimately we got there and I was so pleased with the concert element of it.
Did you ever attempt to actually redecorate the Hollywood sign?
I did look at doing the Hollywood sign for real. We had engineers up there quite a long time, working out how we could do it. I decided against it because I wanted it to be a surprise. In the end, I think we could have done it, but then in March, the whole world would have seen pictures of the Hollywood sign covered in the Olympic rings. So we did it with CGI. The Tom bit is real. He was up there. He climbed up the sign.
You booked Snoop Dogg, a national treasure and someone so synonymous with Los Angeles, a long time ago — yet his stock has risen even more in the last two weeks. Were you psyched watching him become one of the stars of the Olympics?
Well, I hope you get a bit of a break.
No. ( Laughs .) This week we’re filming Ellen DeGeneres’ stand-up show . Really excited about that. And then it’s on to the Paralympics closing. But I did have like 13 hours of sleep last night. I went to bed at 9 o’clock.

Despite the interesting - sometimes controversial - moments in his personal and religious affiliations to Scientology, Cruise has remained a fan favourite for his extraordinary roles and immense work ethic as an actor and artist - and we respect that!
One of the most impressive aspects of the franchise has always been his decision to ditch the idea of using stunt doubles for many of the action films major scenes - often landing him severe injuries.
He takes cruising for a bruising to a whole new level, right? If only we could still do some of the things we used to be able to do when we were younger - clearly Tom can.
