This full day Kimberley adventure will have you traversing the secret caves of the Napier Range, the wondrous Windjana Gorge, the Boab Prison Tree and the historical ruins of Lillimooloora Station.

Departing from Broome at approximately 6.00 am, you will be picked up from your Broome accommodation and head east into Kimberley cattle country, through the remote and striking landscape particular to this region. Whilst travelling, your guide will share stories of the local people and history, before you arrive for morning tea at the Willare Roadhouse on the Fitzroy River. Upon leaving the Roadhouse, you will journey to the Boab Prison Tree in Derby. Measuring almost 15 metres in diameter and believed to be more than 1500 years old, this is a site of some considerable cultural sensitivity, due to the giant, hollowed out tree being used as a prison for Aboriginals being transported to Derby in the 1890s. Travelling along the Gibb River Road, you will see the extraordinary Napier mountain range, estimated to be more than 350 million years old and the habitat of a diverse array of flora and fauna. Soon you will arrive at the outback oasis of Windjana Gorge – a 3.5 km geological wonder, with walls rising to a height of 90m – where you'll search for freshwater crocodiles, colourful birdlife and bush tucker. Following a picnic lunch, you will spend the afternoon exploring fascinating Tunnel Creek, a cave system that extends for 750 metres, carved out of the Napier Range, replete with secret caves and subterranean wildlife. Here, you will learn the legend of Indigenous freedom fighter, Jandamarra, who hid out in the tunnels in the 1890s. Take a revitalising swim in a tranquil waterhole before leaving for Lillimooloora Station as dusk descends. The historical ruins of Lillimooloora Station are a unique example of what life would have been like during early white settlement in the Kimberley region. After dark, relax and enjoy the naturally occurring savannah fires, before returning to your hotel at approximately 10:00 pm. Time is allowed for an optional dinner (own expense) en route back to Broome. Please note that this tour operates from April to October only.

What to bring:

It is essential that you bring shoes you don't mind getting wet - and we mean fully immersed in water! Ideally, wet shoes, sandals or old runners. Other recommendations include: your swimmers and a towel, a broad-brimmed hat with sun visor (broad brimmed being better for all round protection), personal water bottle, sunscreen and camera.

Child prices apply to children between the ages of 4 and 12 years inclusive. Kimberley Wild advises against younger children joining our tours as the days can be long, the distances travelled extended and the walks difficult for little legs. Concession/pensioner rates apply to YHA Members and those holding valid Australian Pension, Seniors and Student Cards. Not applicable to international concession card holders.

Kimberley Wild will cater for special dietary requirements, so please advise us of this when booking. Tunnel Creek National Park is a national park in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The natural cavern through which Tunnel Creek flows is a major attraction of the park.

Many Aboriginal rock art and stalactites decorate the walls of the cave. The cave was the hideout of the Aboriginal warrior Jandamara, who was killed outside the cave entrance in 1897. It is part of the Bariri (Devonian Reef) Conservation Park.

Day 1: Broome to Tunnel Creek via the highway. (5-hour drive) Allow 2-3 hours for the walk through Tunnel Creek. Carry on to Windjana Gorge to camp for the night (35 min drive)

Day 2: Wake early and explore Windjana Gorge, check out the freshwater crocodiles and hear the story of Jandamarra. Travel north to the Gibb River Road and drive to Bells Gorge, camping at Silent Grove for the night. (2hour 15m drive)

Day 3:  Wake early and explore Bells Gorge. Allow 1-3 hours for the walk. Return to Broome via Derby (4 hour drive) Stop to see the Boab Prison Tree.

Tour outline.

After your complimentary hotel pick up, you will be brought to Broome Aviation’s very own departure lounge located at the Broome International Airport. Here you will be greeted by your pilot for the day and enjoy your pre-flight breakfast and tea or coffee in air-conditioned comfort. Your pilot will outline the days adventure and give a brief safety demonstration before commencing your flight.

Windjana Gorge Rock Art Tour

NEW! Exclusive Rock Art tour in the areas surrounding Windjana Gorge! Guided by respected elder Jimmy Dillon Andrews this is a once in a lifetime experience. This rock art is only accessible with an elder like Jimmy Andrews – don’t miss your chance. Sites like Jumburrurru (Carpenter’s Gap) has shown Bunuba people have been on this land for at least 46,000 years. This tour is operated as a tagalong departing and returning within the same day to Windjana Gorge campground. Details coming soon! Bookings are essential a minimum of 3 days in advance.

Cancellation by the traveller: If you wish to cancel your tour you must immediately inform your booking agent. Once we have received your notice, cancellation will take effect.   If you do not inform the booking agent and are a no show you will receive no refund of your tour price. If Cancellation takes place on the day of the tour your tour price will be forfeited completely.  Cancellations more than 72 hours prior to tour will enable a 100 percent refund of your tour price.
