Georgia & Armenia Adventure

11 days | check out the caucasus neighbours of armenia and georgia.

Intrepid leader and travellers on the Tsinandali Estate visit near Khaketi

Head deep in the Caucasus on an 11-day extravaganza around the sights of Georgia and Armenia. Discover the religious significance of Yerevan and the ancient stone-carved monasteries dotted around the countryside, visit the historic and cultural hub of Tbilisi, head to the highlands in Gudauri, dabble in Georgia’s acclaimed wine scene in Telavi and learn how to make traditional cuisine. With home-cooked meals, local guided walks and free time aplenty, you’d be hard pressed to find a pair of countries so rich with things to see, yet so far from the usual tourist map.

Trip overview

  • Check out the amazing religious monuments of Armenia, including the rock-hewn Geghard Monastery, the Hellenistic Garni Temple, and the medieval Sevanavank Monastery.
  • Take a hike in the striking Caucasus mountains to perhaps one of the best positioned churches in Europe – Gergeti Trinity Church.
  • Learn how to make one of Georgia’s favourite dishes, khinkali, with a local family in their home, then enjoy the delicious dumplings for lunch.
  • Visit the village of Fioletovo, home to the Molokan religious sect. Join a Molokan family for lunch to learn about their traditions and taste their Russian-influenced cuisine.
  • Explore Kond, one of Yerevan’s oldest neighbourhoods, with a local guide, then join a family for a traditional Armenian lunch in their 300-year-old home.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Mtskheta-Mtianeti Regional Hub. Donations help them improve their services and training hub to connect people, who’ve fled their homes due to war or political instability, with their new community in Georgia.
  • This trip involves a reasonable amount of walking so be sure to bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes. To make the most of the trip, it's best if you have at least a moderate level of fitness. There is an included hike on Day 8, at an altitude of 2170m. Please refer to the itinerary for more details.
  • The diversity of the seasons here makes for incredible scenery, but the weather in this region can be unpredictable. It’s best to wear layers at all times of the year in case conditions change. There may occasionally be itinerary changes due to road closures.
  • This trip covers a lot of ground so there are some long travel days. Some of the roads in Armenia and Georgia, particularly when visiting villages, can be a little rough. This may mean that some of the journeys could take a little longer than expected. Please review the itinerary for details.

Barheev! Welcome to Armenia. This evening, there will be an important welcome meeting at 6 pm, where you’ll meet your group leader and fellow travellers. After the meeting, why not ask your leader where you can find some traditional Armenian food, like khoravat (Armenian barbecue) or basturma (cured beef).

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Complimentary airport arrival transfer

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

The arrival transfer is only valid if arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-trip accommodation through Intrepid. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking, or at a minimum 14 days prior to travel, as we may not be able to confirm a request made within 14 days of travel.

Begin at Republic Square, and then head to the Cafesjian Center – an open-air museum of modern art. Continue on to Freedom Square – a lively city hub with its ornate Opera House sitting at the centre. You’ll have lunch at a traditional museum-café built by Lusik Aguleci – a lover of Armenian antiques and all things local and handmade. Here you’ll have the chance to try some local favourites, like tomatoes with goats cheese and gata (Armenian coffee cake). Take a look around to see exhibits of national costumes, carpets and rugs and other traditional Armenian wares, then enjoy an afternoon at leisure. Today, you will also visit the Hellenistic Garni Temple and the medieval Sevanavank Monastery, set on the banks of the pristine Lake Sevan. From here, travel to Fioletovo, a village that’s home to the Molokan religious sect. Join a Molokan family for lunch to learn about their beliefs and traditions and taste their Russian-influenced cuisine, including borscht, pirozhki (pie) and tea from a samovar. Then, travel to the picturesque town of Dilijan, where you will be spending the night. On arrival, join your leader for an orientation walk to take in the town’s charming buildings and traditional craft workshops. Your accommodation tonight is a restored 19th century building filled with antique furniture and original architecture.

Today’s total travel time is approximately 4.5 hours.

Say goodbye to Armenia this morning as you board a public bus to Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia. On arrival, you’ll have time for your own discoveries of this vibrant city. You may like to wander the old districts, which are structured like terraces, take a walk along the river, visit the Tbilisi Concert Hall and Public Service Hall, or grab a great coffee and check out the artist pop ups at Fabrika.

Our preference is to buy tickets for the morning bus, but if they are unavailable we will purchase tickets for the afternoon bus, which arrives into Tbilisi in the evening. Delays can occur if there is heavy traffic at the border crossing.

Stock up on brekky and embark on a sightseeing tour of Tbilisi with a local guide. Tbilisi is a city of colour, of old and new, and your tour this morning will give you a glance at its history from the early centuries AD to now, through its sites and diverse architecture. You’ll also pass by the renowned 19th century houses of multicoloured balconies, synonymous with the Tbilisian skyline. Take a panoramic cable car ride from Rike Park up to the Narikala Fortress, then wander down to the sulfur baths, which are set on the thermal springs that give the Georgian capital its name. After your guided tour, have a free afternoon to relax, perhaps with a spa treatment!

Afterwards, it's time to sample some of the local drops - visit a small private winery where our host will tell you all about the Georgian wine-making process and you'll be able to sample their best wines. Tonight, you’ll stay nearby in a hotel run by another wine-making family. Georgia and Armenia tour

Description

Accommodation, price options, private tour of georgia and armenia.

Combining two countries when traveling abroad as a tourist is always a great idea. If your planned destinations are Georgia and Armenia – search no further and take a closer look at our tour program. It’s fascinating how these two neighbouring countries are so different from each other, how diverse their history, culture and traditions are. Both Georgia and Armenia are often called as “lands where it all began” – meaning that here you will learn a lot about things that are “the very first” on Earth, or “the oldest” that exist. Unique alphabets that are being not only kept but actually used and that are completely different from each other; winemaking traditions that are of proven 8 millennial record; ancient monuments and UNESCO World Heritage List sites literally on every corner. This Georgia and Armenia private tour package based on the itinerary that’s been proven to be the most efficient and the best in terms of time spent touring versus time spent on the road balance.

Day 1: arrival in tbilisi (georgia).

Our representative will meet you in the airport and arrange for hotel transfer. Check-in after 2pm.

Day 2: Tbilisi city tour (Georgia)

Georgian capital city for many centuries of its existence was a place where people of all faiths, cultural and national backgrounds used to live together, making Tbilisi a contemporary metropolis filled with history and atmosphere of the rich and great past. Your South Caucasus travel will continue this day with the tour of old Tbilisi: at the Metekhi church and King Vakhtang monument you will listen to the Tbilisi founding legend, continue by cable car to ancient Narikala fortress, walk down to the “Legvtakhevi” (fig) gorge and Tbilisi waterfall, passing by the church and mosque. Tbilisi flea market experience will be followed by stroll through the renovated pedestrian alley and part of the “New Tiflis” major renovation project of Georgian capital. And to make this day special – traditional Georgian welcome dinner will be attended. Transfer to hotel.

Day 3: Tour to Kazbegi (Georgia)

Tour to Georgia would not be complete without a journey to Kazbegi, a small town close to the border with Russia. The tour itinerary for this day will start with the Jvari monastery, architectural gem of the Caucasus, located on top of the hill overlooking major Georgian highlights – its old capital town Mtskheta; famous two rivers merging point where Mtkvari river meets river Aragvi; and transport highway entering Tbilisi. Another site worth making a stop on the way is Ananuri fortress – established in XVI century as a residence for local Dukes of Aragvi the complex is still a place that impresses all those passing by with its nobility and greatness. Other attractions en route include exciting view of two small mountain rivers making one, and flowing side by side without mixing their colors for quite a distance; also a picturesque mountain landscape viewpoint followed by the “Cross” pass. Arrive in Kazbegi, change a vehicle for 4-wheel-drive cars to get to Gergeti Holy Trinity church, nestled on top of one of the highest hills at 2170 meters above sea level. Drive to mountain resort Gudauri for overnight. Transfer to hotel.

Day 4: Tour to Uplistsikhe and Mtskheta (Georgia)

After breakfast in the hotel start driving back towards Tbilisi with the stops in Uplistsikhe and Mtskheta on the way. From Gudauri in about 2-hour drive the group will arrive to the cave town Uplistsikhe – the magnificent remains of an ancient pagan settlement where all the houses used to be carved inside the rocks. Continue your Caucasus tours’ Georgian part by visiting a local family’s private wine cellar for house wine tasting and homemade lunch. After lunch arrive to Mtskheta, old capital town of ancient Georgia and one of the most important historical cities of the country. Visit the old town and its principal sight – Svetitskhoveli monastery. The name of the monastery means “living pillar” and it is widely believed that the place is a burial site of Jesus Christ’s mantle. Being one of the principal churches in Georgia, the monastery is also one of the most revered places in Caucasus. Transfer to Tbilisi.

Day 5: Tour to Kakheti (Georgia)

In the morning before drive to the region of Kakheti famous for its ancient winemaking traditions. Numerous vineyards as well as both big and small wine producing facilities are biggest landmarks of the region. Major highlight of the day is a wine tour and wine tasting at unique wine cellar “Gvirabi” (tunnel) by winemaking company “Khareba”, set inside the tunnel excavated in the XX century deep into the Caucasus mountain range. Next stop before driving to capital city Tbilisi will be the town called Sighnaghi, labeled recently as a “city of love”, mostly for the fact that one can register there their marriage 24/7. Previously a royal residence, Sighnaghi still surrounded by ancient city walls and currently one of the most popular travel destinations in Georgia. Return back to Tbilisi.

Day 6: Tour from Tbilisi to Yerevan (Armenia)

Check-out from your Tbilisi hotel in the morning and depart towards the border between Georgia and Armenia (about 1.5-hour drive). On the other side, you will be met by local guide and driver to start touring the second destination country with this tour – Armenia.

The first Armenian site to visit is Haghpat monastery, the X century architectural monument and UNESCO World Heritage list member, in the region of Lori. The next attraction of the tour is what is called a Jewel of Armenia – lake Sevan, the largest freshwater alpine lake in Caucasus and Eurasian region. Total surface area of the lake is 1900 square miles which comprises a sixth part of Armenia. Arrive to Sevanavank (Sevan monastery), ancient monastic complex which beautifully set in one of the coasts of lake Sevan and features two major churches – Surp Arakelots (Holy Apostles) and Surp Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), founded in the year of 847 by Princess Mariam. Another distinguishing feature of the site is a magnificent view that surrounds the place – snowy mountains everywhere your eyes could see.

Arrive in Yerevan, check-in to hotel.

Day 7: Yerevan city tour (Armenia)

Sightseeing tour of Armenian capital is yet another exciting day of your travel to the South Caucasus. You will see how different it is from two previous capitals, especially with its colors – Yerevan has a distinguished color in its basic architecture (spoiler: it’s pink!). This city tour will start with probably the most adventurous part – Cascade Monument. Interesting fact about this place is that it has 2780 stairs to walk up, exactly the number of years Yerevan has celebrated recently. Walking up these stairs does have its reward – a fascinating view over the city, with gorgeous Ararat mountain, central square of Republic, major city avenue and beautiful Opera theatre building – all in a magic full view. And, as usual, the city tour of Armenian capital will complete with the national cuisine dinner and traditional folklore show. Transfer to hotel.

Day 8: Tour to Garni, Geghard and Etchmiadzin (Armenia)

Continue your Georgia and Armenia tour with a following program:

In the morning leave Yerevan for the Armenian village called Garni with its principal highlight – ancient pagan fortress of the I century BC. Drive to Geghard, IV century medieval monastery partially carved out of the adjacent mountain, and yet another UNESCO World heritage list site. Continue to the see of Vagharshapat and visit the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, known as “mother-church” of the Armenian Apostolic Church and residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians. Drive back to Yerevan, transfer to hotel.

Day 9: Tour to Khor Virap, Areni, Tatev (Armenia)

The 2-day trip to Tatev in Armenia will start with the visit to Khor Virap (deep dungeon) monastery placed in the Ararat plain and used to be the residence for Armenian Catholicos. This monastery’s fame and a religious pilgrimage status came with the fact that St. Gregory the Illuminator, the Baptist of Armenia, spent 14 years here as a prisoner for disseminating Christianity. Next stop of the day tour in Armenia will be small town Areni, famous for its traditional wine made of pomegranates and apricots. Wine tour and tasting here is definitely a highlight.

Final stop for the day is IX century’s Tatev monastery itself. To get to the monastery you will be taking the longest non-stop cableway in the world (5.7 km). Views that opening to travelers are simply indescribable – you will have to see it with your own eyes. Transfer to the town of Goris for overnight.

Day 10: Tour to Noravank (Armenia)

After a lazy morning and delicious breakfast served in the hotel in Goris depart back to Yerevan. Make en route stop at the Noravank (new monastery) complex. The location of the site within the narrow gorge of Amaghu river is making you feel being in times when the monastery was founded – in 1205. Not mentioning the architectural style of the Complex itself – highly artistic monument reminiscent of the tower-like burial structures of the first years of Christianity in Armenia.

Transfer to hotel in Yerevan.

Day 11: Departure from Yerevan (Armenia)

Check-out from your hotel before 12 pm. Airport transfer.

Taking you from the shores of the Caspian Sea and the splendid history of Baku, through the pretty wine fields of Kakheti and up to the spectacular High Caucasus mountains, you will be following in the footsteps of Silk Road traders, Crusader Knights and Ottoman Princes. This region, lying at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, is packed with the legends of the Golden Fleece, stunning scenery and warm and hospitable people, with a flourishing food and wine scene.

It also, amazingly, remains relatively unknown even to many experienced travellers and this is the perfect trip for those wanting a diverse experience in an often overlooked part of our world.

As an overall ethos, wherever possible we aim to use characterful accommodation that enhances the overall travel experience, not just offers a bed for the night. This can obviously vary dramatically from country to country and from trip to trip. On this particular trip we will be in hotels and guesthouse, all with en-suite facilities.  Please note that the accommodation mentioned in the itinerary is intended as a guide only and is always subject to availability.

tour armenia georgia

After breakfast, we will head to the UNESCO site of Qobustan, home to over 6000 Stone Age cave drawings, where we will explore the caves and petroglyphs. Then, after lunch at a local restaurant we’ll take a wander around Baku city centre, and discover the quirky architecture. This really is a city of two halves with the ancient walls and heritage buildings juxtaposed with the modern and flamboyant hub in the city. We take in such buildings as the 3 pointed skyscrapers, and  the contemporary landmark of the Zaha Hadid–designed Heydar Aliyev Center, where we pay a visit. We will also make a stop at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum that displays the largest collection of Azerbaijani carpets in the world, with both modern and historical weaving techniques on show.

Day 3 Baku - Lahij: Walled city, maidan tower and village of Lahij

tour armenia georgia

We’ll have the full morning to enjoy Baku, the Caucasus’s most cosmopolitan city. We’ll focus predominantly on the old walled city and after entering via the Shamaxi gate, we’ll visit the imposing Maiden Tower and the impressive Shirvanshahs’ Palace (both UNESCO World Heritage sites). After lunch we will head west and finally into the foothills of the Caucasus to the picturesque mountain village of Lahij, famed for its coppersmiths and thriving craft trade.

Day 4 Lahij - Sheki: Crafts and traditions of Lahij

tour armenia georgia

In the morning wander around this lovely village, shop in the market and meet some of the locals. Later, we’ll set off to Sheki, once a key trading post, sitting as it does on a major crossroads. This is our base for the next two nights and is one of the country’s highlights.

Day 5 Sheki: Khan’s palace, local market & Kis Village

tour armenia georgia

With a full day in Sheki region, there’ll be time to visit the beautifully renovated Khan’s palace, the museum and local market and head out to the pretty village of Kis to see the round-towered Albanian Church. This afternoon there will be some free time so you can explore Sheki at your own pace.

Day 6 Sheki - Telavi: Local family lunch, Nekreski Monastery & Gremi Church

tour armenia georgia

Today we will transfer to the Lagodekhi checkpoint and cross over into the Kakheti wine-growing region of Georgia. After joining a local family for lunch at their home, we'll drive to the Nekresi Monastery (4th century), once on the Silk Road, and visit the 16th-century Gremi Church complex, a photogenic citadel with splendid views over the surrounding wine country. In the evening we arrive in Telavi.

Day 7 Telavi - Gori: Wine cellars & tasting, State Museum

tour armenia georgia

This morning, before we leave Telavi, we’ll visit the local market. We’ll then visit the 18th century fortified hilltop town of Sighnaghi. From here we will visit a unique wine cellar where wine is produced and stored, and taste some of the typical wines of the region. On our way to Gori we will make a stop at the Georgian State Museum to see it's stunning treasures.

Day 8 Gori - Kazbegi National Park: Stalin Museum, Uplistsikhe cave city, Ananuri

tour armenia georgia

Gori is infamous not only as one of the focal points of the Russian occupation in August 2008 but also as the birth place of a certain Josef Stalin. Here we will visit the fascinating Stalin Museum (which remains unchanged since its Cold War era opening), before heading on to the ancient remains of the Uplistsikhe cave city. After lunch we’ll start our very scenic drive up through the High Caucasus Mountains along the Georgian Military Highway, which is still a major route linking Georgia with Russia. En route to our night stop at Stepantsminda we’ll visit Ananuri, a 17th century architectural complex, overlooking the Zhinvali reservoir.

Day 9 Kazbegi National Park – Tbilisi: Gergeti Church & Mtskheta

tour armenia georgia

This morning, there will be a chance to take a walk for about 2 hours up through beautiful valleys and forests to the Gergeti Trinity church (14th century) located on top of the mountain (2170m) and one of the country’s most iconic images. Weather permitting, we may also be able to catch a glimpse of one the highest glaciers in the Caucasus – Mt Kazbegi (5047m). We will then enjoy a delicious homemade lunch with a local family, before heading to Georgia’s ancient capital and its religious centre - Mtskheta (3000 years old). This afternoon we will visit two UNESCO World Heritage sites: Jvari church (6th century) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century) where the Robe of Christ is said to be buried. Then we’ll continue on to Georgia’s stunning capital, Tbilisi, where we’ll have 2 nights.

Day 10 In Tbilisi: Old Tbilisi & café culture

tour armenia georgia

In the morning we will have a city tour taking in Old Tbilisi. From the Metekhi Church overlooking the river Mtkvari (13th century) to the Narikala Fortress, one of the oldest fortifications in the city (4th century), we’ll also pay a visit to the Sulphur Baths, the synagogue, the Anchiskhati Church (6th century) and Sioni Cathedral (6/7th century) where the cross of St. Nino – the woman who brought Christianity to Georgia – is preserved. All these sights are in close proximity and it’s a pleasant walk. We then have the rest of the day to soak up the café culture of Tbilisi, relax and shop.

Day 11 Tbilisi – Dilijan (Armenia): Debed Canyon & Haghpat Monastery

tour armenia georgia

After an early breakfast we will drive to the border and cross into Armenia. We will then drive via the stunning Debed Canyon to the Haghpat monastery, built between the 10th and 13th century, before reaching the alpine town of Dilijan.

Day 12 Dilijan – Goris: Lake Sevan, Sevanavank Monastery & Karahunj

tour armenia georgia

Travelling further into this ancient land, we will take a spectacular drive via Lake Sevan, one of the world’s largest high altitude lakes (1900m) to the medevial Sevanavank Monastery. En route we will visit the Selim Caravanserai, dating from 1332 and reputed to be the best preserved of its type in the country. Finally we will stop off at the prehistoric site of Karahunj, described as the ‘Armenian Stonehenge’, before arriving in Goris.

Day 13 Goris – Yerevan: Tatev Monastery, Noravank Monastery

tour armenia georgia

This morning we will head to one of the highlights of Armenia – the 9th century Tatev monastery - which is reached by the longest cable car in the world, known as the Wings of Tatev. This is Armenia’s most sacred site, and the clifftop location of this still-operating church is breathtaking. On our way to Yerevan we will stop at Noravank Monastery, which was founded in the 13th Century.

After lunch we will have some free time to explore this pleasant city at our own pace, before heading out for our farewell dinner.

Reducing Single Use Plastic

We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Every time you refill your bottle without the use of single-use plastic, you will be helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. Key Information

The weather conditions can be extremely varied (even within the course of a day!). The Greater Caucasus Range moderates local climate by serving as a barrier against cold air from the north and the relatively small territory covers different climatic zones, which are determined by distance from the Black Sea and by altitude. The climatic zones range from humid subtropical to snow and glaciers.

IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.

KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER

Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, as many of the activities are optional. There will be some long journeys in the vehicles on the tour, so please be prepared for this.

THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL

We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.

TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS

As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!

Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip. On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour.

Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.

Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.

Absolutely fascinating journey which I will definitely remember for long. We thoroughly enjoyed every second of it, delicious food and awe-inspiring sights. Also had an opportunity to take many photos. The only disappointment was the cloudy weather on the day visit to Khor Virap, as mt Ararat was not visible in the clouds, so I couldn't take the desired pictures of the Mt Ararat view.

Tim Brandon

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for organizing such a fantastic tour to Georgia and Armenia! These both countries were like a hidden gem for me. I really enjoyed the colorful sights and hospitality of people. I would especially like to highlight the Noravank monastery, which unique beauty I greatly enjoyed as an architect. Our guide/driver Tazo in Georgia and Vardan in Armenia were simply fantastic, friendly, caring and very knowledgeable.

Visiting the Caucasus Region

Visiting Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia in one trip makes logistical sense as the countries sit next to each other south of the Caucasus Mountains, but their deep, historical connections also make it imperative for travellers to visit all three to get a clearer picture of the region.

Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia are often referred to as ‘the Caucasus region’. The Caucasus, or Caucasia, refers to both the mountain system and the region bounded by the Black Sea in the west and the Caspian Sea in the east. This mountain system includes the Greater Caucasus mountain range in the north – which serves as a natural barrier between Eastern Europe and Western Asia and includes Europe’s highest mountain, Mount Elbrus (height 5,642 metres or 18,510 ft) – and the Lesser Caucasus in the south.

The name Caucasus comes from Kaukasos , which was what the Ancient Greeks used to refer to the mountains. For centuries throughout history, the Caucasus was associated with the myth of Prometheus. In Greek mythology, Prometheus was punished for stealing fire from the gods by being chained to the icy peaks of the Greater Caucasus chain. The land north of the Greater Caucasus (Ciscaucasia) is in Russian territory, while the south (South Caucasus or Transcaucasia) is occupied by the former Soviet territories and now independent republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. It is this region, south of the mountain barrier, that we will examine.

Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia have a long history. In fact, in 2009, a team of researchers and experts from the United States, Israel, and the Republic of Georgia examined clay retrieved from the Dzudzuana Cave , 200 km from the capital of Tbilisi, and found flax fibres, invisible now to the naked eye due to disintegration, that were more than 34,000 years old (Upper Paleolithic Age). Flax is a plant with edible grain and is still used to make linen, though the variety used in modern times—Linum usitatissimum—is domesticated, unlike the wild variety used by our ancestors. The fibres found in this cave showed that humans had been industriously creating fibres from plants for clothing for much longer than experts had realised.

Some parts of this long history overlap as their borders were redrawn after every war or invasive siege, each country growing bigger, smaller, or encroaching on another’s territory. The prime geographical location, mild climate, and fertile lands of the South Caucasus led to invasions from every major power in the world throughout the centuries. The Greeks, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Mongols, Ottomans, and the former Soviet Union have all left their mark in the region. The Ancient Kingdom of Colchis covered what is now western Georgia and dates from the Bronze Age. The Greeks established colonies in Colchis between the 8th and 6th centuries BC. The wealthy kingdom figures prominently in Greek mythology, said to be the home of Princess Medea, the site of war god Ares’s sacred grove, the land of the Amazons, and the destination of Jason and the Argonauts. You can read more about their entwined histories in our article.

Armenia Azerbaijan Georgia Tour Itinerary

Azerbaijan champions secularism and a separation of state and religion. It is a country that perhaps travellers do not think to include on their list of places to visit, but Azerbaijan puts itself decidedly on the map. Baku is the capital, the centre of the city sitting on the shore of the Caspian Sea. Its skyline is dominated by the Flame Towers, a trio of skyscrapers that serve as the symbol of the city.‘Azer’ in Persian means fire and the country’s nickname is ‘the Land of Fire’. Zoroastrianism, the main religion during Persian rule, puts great importance on fire, which is believed to be a source of knowledge. We now know that the country’s vast oil and natural gas reserves are responsible for the seemingly ever-burning flames that define Azerbaijan’s landscape, but during ancient times, the flames made Azerbaijan a place of great mystery and a place of pilgrimage.

Our tour of the Caucasus begins in Baku and concludes in Yerevan. In Baku, the group has a guided tour, exploring the ancient walled old town, a maze of medieval narrow streets mixed with turn-of-the-century monuments. Our city walking tour also takes in Shirvan Shah's palace, a unique 15th century building. Before we drive to Georgia, we make time to visit Sheki , an important trading hub (caravanserai) on the Silk Road, recently listed as a UNESCO world heritage site . Azerbaijan is considered to have some unusual sites and features in a list of ten unimaginable places to visit .

Our tour spends two nights in the capital of Georgia , Tbilisi, a charming mix of east and west. Odyssey Traveller has published a short article on questions about Georgia as well as a definitive guide on the country to assist you with your planning. Georgia is opening up to the world and to the future, but travellers are still attracted to its rich Georgian past. The city’s heritage sites are clustered in Old Tbilisi which are revealed by your tour guide leading your around the ancient capital, which is also famous for its sulphur bathhouses, a perfect stop during the colder months of October to March. The city itself (Tbilisi means ‘warm place’) was built around these natural thermal springs, which were believed to have healing properties. Travellers are enticed to have a soak and cure skin problems, joint pains, and other ailments.

Our time in Tbilisi includes sightseeing in the city's fascinating 'old town', a labyrinth of cobblestone streets, ancient churches and mosques, and medieval baths. After Tbilisi, we travel into the countryside to explore Georgia's many ancient churches, including the Gelati monastery, and Vardzia, cave monastery and underground complex. We also visit Georgia's Black Sea coast. In Georgia, our group tours also take the time to visit local restaurants so that you can enjoy the unique Georgian wine and food culture.

Similar to its neighbouring countries in the South Caucasus, Armenia has a history marked by incredible losses and bloody wars, which continued even after its independence from the former Soviet Union. But the tide seems to have turned in 2018. Armenians, led by opposition politician Nikol Pashinyan, joined a series of peaceful anti-government protests from April to May 2018. The protests were in response to Pashinyan losing his bid for the Prime Minister seat, and Serzh Sargsyan being elected for his third consecutive term as head of state. Dubbed the Armenian ‘ Velvet Revolution’ , it led to Sargsyan’s resignation, Pashinyan being named Prime Minister, and Armenians expressing hope for a better future.

Armenia’s tourism industry has also been flourishing. A big draw is the capital, Yerevan, 23 kilometres (14 miles) from the Turkish border. The city skyline offers a beautiful view of Mt. Ararat (in Turkish territory) in the south. The 2,800-year-old city experienced tremendous growth due to industrialisation, growing from a town of 30,000 people in 1914 to a booming urban centre of more than a million in the latest census. Most buildings are designed with a pink volcanic stone called tuff, making the city’s scenery glow pink at dusk.

Our tour of Armenia includes a full-day sightseeing tour of the capital city, Yerevan. In Yerevan, we visit a moving memorial to victims of the Armenia n genocide, and learn more about the history of Armenia with your tour guide at the Museum of the Medieval Armenia n Culture (Matenadaran). We also make a trip to a brandy factory for a tour and tastings.

Outside Yerevan, we further explore the cultural heritage of the Armenian people. We include a full-day trip to Khor Virap . This romantically located Armenian monastery has panoramic views across a vast plain to Turkey and the twin peaks of Mount Ararat.

Armenia was the world's first Christian country and the country plays an important role in the Bible. Here, in the atmosphere of historical legend, we see Noah's Ark in the snows of Ararat. According to the book of Genesis, it was here that humankind was reborn. Theatrical ceremonies and festivals take place in a Noah's-Ark-shaped stage against the majestic Mount Ararat. We may also enter the hole where Gregory the Illuminator was jailed for 13 years for dissemination of Christianity in Armenia. Later on, we visit the 13th-century monastery complex of Noravank set in a marvellous canyon. Throughout Armenia as a group we discover and see the e volution of religious architecture and the influence on people.

The Georgia Armenia Azerbaijan tours are designed for the curious senior, mature couple or solo traveller. During our tour of Armenia Azerbaijan and Georgia you have a knowledgable tour leader and the best local tour guide we can secure for this Caucasus tour . A great tour to an interesting part of the world Ros & Tony S. Oct '18

Exceptional value for money and interesting destinations well covered by guides! Kerry and Lea D. Oct '18

Travelling to Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia is quite different to travelling in other parts of Europe or the Middle East. Although they all have ancient histories, were colonised by many different peoples and were former Soviet states, they have their own food, culture and traditions. Jenni S. Oct'18

Anybody contemplating a visit to these countries shouldn't put it off. They weren't overcrowded with tourists but I believe that will change very soon. This was my first trip with Odyssey but I have already booked my next one - testament to how good I found them to be. Shirley M. Oct '18

The caucasus: an introduction.

Thomas de Waal

In this fascinating book, noted journalist Thomas de Waal--author of the highly acclaimed Black Garden--makes the case that while the Caucasus is often treated as a sub-plot in the history of Russia, or as a mere gateway to Asia, the five-day war in Georgia, which flared into a major international crisis in 2008, proves that this is still a combustible region, whose inner dynamics and history deserve a much more complex appreciation from the wider world.

In The Caucasus, de Waal provides this richer, deeper, and much-needed appreciation, one that reveals that the South Caucasus--Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, and their many smaller regions, enclaves, and breakaway entities--is a fascinating and distinct world unto itself. Providing both historical background and an insightful analysis of the period after 1991, de Waal sheds light on how the region has been scarred by the tumultuous scramble for independence and the three major conflicts that broke out with the end of the Soviet Union--Nagorny Karabakh, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia. The book examines the region as a major energy producer and exporter; offers a compelling account of the Rose Revolution in Georgia, the rise of Mikheil Saakashvili, and the August 2008 war; and considers the failure of the South Caucasus, thus far, to become a single viable region. In addition, the book features a dozen or so "boxes" which provide brief snapshots of such fascinating side topics as the Kurds, Turkish-Armenian rapprochement, the promotion of the region as the "Soviet Florida," and the most famous of all Georgians, Stalin.

The Caucasus delivers a vibrantly written and timely account of this turbulent region, one that will prove indispensable for all concerned with world politics. It is, as well, a stimulating read for armchair travelers and for anyone curious about far-flung corners of the world.

The Ghost of Freedom: A History of the Caucasus

Charles King

The Caucasus mountains rise at the intersection of Europe, Russia, and the Middle East. A land of astonishing natural beauty and a dizzying array of ancient cultures, the Caucasus for most of the twentieth century lay inside the Soviet Union, before movements of national liberation created newly independent countries and sparked the devastating war in Chechnya.

Combining riveting storytelling with insightful analysis, The Ghost of Freedom is the first general history of the modern Caucasus, stretching from the beginning of Russian imperial expansion up to the rise of new countries after the Soviet Union's collapse. In evocative and accessible prose, Charles King reveals how tsars, highlanders, revolutionaries, and adventurers have contributed to the fascinating history of this borderland, providing an indispensable guide to the complicated histories, politics, and cultures of this intriguing frontier. Based on new research in multiple languages, the book shows how the struggle for freedom in the mountains, hills, and plains of the Caucasus has been a perennial theme over the last two hundred years--a struggle which has led to liberation as well as to new forms of captivity. The book sheds valuable light on the origins of modern disputes, including the ongoing war in Chechnya, conflicts in Georgia and Azerbaijan, and debates over oil from the Caspian Sea and its impact on world markets.

Ranging from the salons of Russian writers to the circus sideshows of America, from the offices of European diplomats to the villages of Muslim mountaineers, The Ghost of Freedom paints a rich portrait of one of the world's most turbulent and least understood regions.

The Caucasus: A History

James Forsyth

For the first time, this major new survey of the Caucasus traces a unified narrative history of this complex and turbulent region at the borderlands of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, from prehistory to the present. For thousands of years the Caucasus has formed the intersection of routes of migration, invasion, trade and culture, and a geographical bridge between Europe and Asia, subject to recurring imperial invasion. Drawing on sources in English, Russian, Persian and Arabic, amongst others, this authoritative study centres on the region's many indigenous peoples, including Abkhazians, Armenians, Azerbaijanis, Chechens and Circassians, and their relations with outsiders who still play an important part in the life of the region today. The book presents a critical view of the historical role of Russian imperialism in events in the Caucasian countries, and the violent struggle of some of these peoples in their efforts to establish a precarious independence.

Legends of the Caucasus

David Hunt (ed.)

The Caucasus has an extremely rich folk literature, almost unknown among English speakers, which includes myths, legends, magical tales, anecdotes, and proverbs.

The one hundred and one legends included in this book reflect the cultures of fourteen different ethnic groups—their dynamism and the matters that concerned them: survival against external dangers, the risk of starvation, and the persistence of the family or clan as a coordinated group. Descended from an oral tradition, much of their knowledge was retained in memories and passed down the generations. Yet, with the introduction of the alphabet, the way of life they portray is rapidly becoming extinct.

The translation is derived from the manuscripts of Russian collectors working out of the Russian Empire in the late nineteenth century and from the Soviet Union in the mid-twentieth century. The text is a mixture of prose and verse, reflecting how the legends would have been performed by storytellers within the culture.

This volume includes a map, bibliography, appendix, glossary, keyword and theme analysis, and references.

Caucasus: A Journey to the Land between Christianity and Islam

Nicholas Griffin

A rugged land between the Black and Caspian seas, the Caucasus is a battle ground for a fascinating and formidable clash of cultures: Russia on one side, the predominantly Muslim mountains on the other. In Caucasus, award-winning author Nicholas Griffin recounts his journey to this war torn region to explore the roots of today's conflict, centering his travelogue on Imam Shamil, the great nineteenth century Muslim warrior who commanded a quarter-century resistance against invading Russian forces.

Delving deep into the Caucasus, Griffin transcends the headlines trumpeting Chechen insurgency to give the land and its conflicts dimension: evoking the weather, terrain, and geography alongside national traditions, religious affiliations, and personal legends as barriers to peaceful co-existence. In focusing his tale on Shamil while retracing his steps, Griffin compellingly demonstrates the way history repeats itself.

Let Our Fame Be Great: Journeys Among the Defiant People of the Caucasus

Oliver Bullough

Part travelogue, part history, Let Our Fame Be Great tells the stories of the forgotten peoples of the Caucasus region, an incredible cultural crossroads where Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Turkey and the Middle East meet. The area was once the home of the Golden Fleece and Prometheus’ place of exile, and later inspired Pushkin and Lermontov, but its rich history has been overshadowed by decades of guerrilla warfare. Now, it is better known to us for the struggle in Chechnya and the 2008 war between Georgia and Russia. Traveling through history and throughout this tumultuous region, journalist and Russia expert Oliver Bullough details the major events—from nineteenth-century Tsarist expansionism to the modern day struggles in Chechnya and South Ossetia—that have shaped this fascinating land and its people: the Chechens, Nogais, Circassians, mountain Turks, and Ingush who have been consistently besieged—and woefully overlooked—for nearly two hundred years.

Three Apples Fell From Heaven

Micheline Aharonian Marcom

A New York Times Notable Book that imagines the lives of several sufferers of the twentieth century’s first genocide. Anaguil, an Armenian girl taken in by Turkish neighbors after the death of her parents who now views the remains of her world through a Muslim veil; Sargis, a poet hidden away in his mother’s attic, dressed in women’s clothing, and steadily going mad; Lucine, a servant and lover of the American consul; Maritsa, a rage-filled Muslim wife who becomes a whore; and Dickran, an infant left behind under a tree on the long exodus from an Armenian village, who reaches with tiny hands to touch the stars and dies with his name unrecorded.

Georgia: In the Mountains of Poetry

Peter Nasmyth

Georgia has been called the world’s most beautiful country, yet only little is known about it beyond its borders. This topical and vital book by the “ideal chronicler” ( Literary Review ) Peter Nasmyth is the perfect and much-celebrated introduction to its remarkable people, landscape, and culture.

Over its 3,000-year-old history, Georgia has been ruled by everyone from the Greeks to the Ottomans, became a coveted part of the Russian Empire for a hundred years, and was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1921. In twenty-five years, Georgia has undergone a dramatic socio-economical and political transformation, and although its political situation remains precarious, Georgia’s strong sense of nationhood has reinvigorated the country.

Vivid and comprehensive, Nasmyth’s Georgia: In the Mountains of Poetry is a unique eyewitness account of Georgia’s rebirth and creates an unforgettable portrait of its remarkable landscape, history, people and culture. Based on personal experience and offering fascinating insights into the life of ordinary and high profile Georgians, it is essential reading for anyone who does not yet know, or wants to know more, of this astonishing place.

Your words, not ours.

Transcaucasus trails I recently went on the ‘Walking The Transcaucasian Trail Armenia’ tour and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The amazing landscapes and rich culture of Armenia were highlighted in this hiking adventure. Our guide Vahag, was knowledgeable and passionate about the country, which made the tour even more enjoyable. I took this tour with my friends and by the help of Vahag we shortened the tour duration into 5 days trying not to miss the most important places for hiking. The hikes were challenging but cool, offering stunning views of the mountains and valleys. I highly recommend this tour for anyone who loves hiking and wants to explore Armenia. April 26, 2023

This tour was one of the most amazing trips I’ve ever had. It was my second trip to Armenia (first one was for my business) and this time I came with my family and we had a great time in both Armenia and Georgia. Riding the Tatev cable car was especially thrilling, and the view of Mount Kazbek was breathtaking. However, the highlight of this tour was the impressive Prometheus. I highly recommend this tour! Thank You!

Enjoyable trip The tour was good, I enjoyed it fully. Though I took it solo and I got new acquaintances in our small group of 5. The guide Ani was really good and the places I visited were fascinating. Thank you Rima for all your support and quick answers to my messages.

The way to know a small country like Armenia This was my first trip after the pandemic, so I booked a tour to be in nature, out from buildings, museums etc, and I was not wrong. I travelled to Armenia in October 2022 and based on the reviews and thorough feedback, took a Hiking trip to Armenia. I booked a guaranteed date trip as I didn’t want to travel alone but rather be in a small group. I was happy to share a room with Cheryll from the UK. There were 5 of us from NZ, The Netherlands and The UK. A full itinerary, but a relaxing pace and beautiful hotels (don’t really think you need to upgrade unless you are terribly choosy!) A satisfying mix of history, culture, landscape and wildlife and we appreciated the hikes. If you feel comfortable in 18-23 degrees C, do book tour in fall as the sceneries look just amazing. Lastiver waterfall trail was the absolute highlight, as the hike goes through forest and trees are of hundred colours from green to yellow, orange, fair red, purple. Guide Arthur was friendly and funny with a lot of jokes. Kaghni Hotel in Dsegh village provides outstanding wild views. Thanks Cascade Travel, especially Nune for this amazing trip, always know you have a friend in NZ :).

Great small group tour

I was looking for a guaranteed group tour to Armenia and checked a couple of UK travel websites, which do not guarantee that the tour will be organised on all the dates they published on the website. As I wanted to travel in the second half of October I couldn’t find an appropriate company, so I started to check local ones and chose Cascade Travel based ont he recommendation rankings and reviews, too. We booked a small group tour to Armenia and then it turned out some people in our group would travel to Georgia the day we were close to the Georgian border. We started in a group of 10 and ended up 4. It was a lot of fun and very comfortable to travel in a group especially when the group members are good to hang out with in the evenings. Yeghevnut hotel in Goris has a nice terrace to sit in the evening. In Kaghni hotel we organised farewell dinner with all group members, those who would continue the next day tour to Georgia. There are a couple of small issues to mention, the cable car to Tatev Monastery was overcrowded and if you are not close to the window you are risking to see nothing when passing the canyon, which is impressive. Berlin Art Hotel in Gyumri is located very close to the hospital but it is still in the city centre, freshly renovated and has fine breakfast. We travelled in a 20 seater minibus but when some part of group continued to Georgia our car was changed to a smaller 6 seater one which was ok for 4 of us but we didn’t expect that. Overall no specific concerns we are satisfied with the tour.

More than expected

We had a thoroughly enjoyable varied trip, every detail was well thought out and designed to give us a good insight of local culture, cuisine and beverages. We visited the wine factory Voskevaz which was impressive due to its architecture built in the old castle style. Ararat Brandy is a real pride for Armenia as the guide told Churchill was fond of Armenian Brandy produced in this factory. We had a couple of cooking classes, which we truly loved. The duduk play in an underground man made cave hall was touching, this is the sweetest and saddest musical instrument I have ever heard. Guys in Cascade travel did everything possible to make us comfortable, we were unsatisfied with the vehicle, the air conditioning was working bad and ended up broken on the third day when we had an overnight stay 150 km away from Yerevan. We connected to the office and unexpectedly they were responsive at 10 pm. Morning our car was changed to, so we continued the trip with an air conditioned car, otherwise it would be terrible as we travelled in August and in some regions we had almost 37 degrees C. Guys are real professionals in what they do and really work hard to get us satisfied. The thorough reviews stand for their hard work.

Kenneth

We booked a family trip to Armenia and Georgia, my mother was with us and she was 83 and felt bad from long drives and elevation changes. I wish I could check the itinerary better to see such high altitudes and long drives. My agent from Cascade travel should have notified us. If we were without mom we would have a better time.

A well designed private tour Armenia and Georgia with very reasonable price

Cascade travel planned and organised a wonderful 10 day tour of Armenia and Georgia. We customised the tour to our preferences, to take out some monasteries and visit more nature related places. We discussed and came into the final program through a couple of emails. Nune did everything fast and price was very reasonable compared to a couple of other companies we communicated with. We really were impressed with the responsiveness and quickness of Nune, who didn’t miss any single detail in my emails. She surprised us with a birthday cake in a regional hotel. That day was my friend’s birthday and they organised a cake though guide Anna, who is a funny knowledgeable lady, University professor who freelanced as a guide. The Georgian part was organised with the same care but of course service level is different in Armenia and Georgia. Georgians are more relaxed and maybe less caring, they talk too loud and very often it feels like they fight but from the smile we understood that they just used to talk loudly. We would advise to travel to Armenia and Georgia for sure.

Wine and food of Caucasus

Our experience during the gastro tour was unusual with lots of good vibes. We travelled in September 2022. We tried lots of tasty traditional dishes like tolma, ghapama which is a pumpkin filled with rice, dry fruits, honey and nuts and of course Georgian dumplings called khinkali. We didn’t expect to taste such delicious local wines. There is a lot to see in both countries. The program was well balanced, we saw a lot and managed to enjoy local restaurants and cafes. I would definitely recommend Cascade Travel as the trip was like a visit to friends, everything was smoothly organised.

I did this tour in September 2022 and would highly recommend it. The reflected reviews were very supporting and helped to choose the correct agent. The agency organized it in a way that you will not be feeling overwhelmed with difficult trails, though the last days hike to Aragats Southern peak is not that easy. Anyway I liked it much. Its Northern peak is the highest point of country and though we hiked to the Southern still views were just breathtaking. Overall tour is well balanced and a good thing that all lunch boxes are cared for and no hustle with that. Diners we offered at the hotels quite cheap and tasty.

Food and wine as a great way to experience countries

This is a fantastic way to experience and compare the cuisine, landscape and culture of 2 different countries in Caucasus. Wines were delicious both in Armenia and Georgia. Cooking classes were a lot of fun and the most enjoyable parts of the tour. We travelled in September and were lucky enough to participate in grape harvest randomly on the road in Areni village. We saw the vineyards and asked the driver to stop the car. When we got to the vineyards, we were invited to participate in the harvest process. Areni, the local endemic sort of grapes a lot of local wines are made from, is sour for eating. True enjoyable stop was Tsaghkunq Guesthouse, where chef Yura showed how he makes local fish from Lake Sevan. Another highlight of the trip is Alazani valley, Georgian wine region. We made Georgian dumplings Khinkali and Khachapuri (dough and cheese cookies) in Georgia. Just a thing, be prepared to gain a couple of kilos during this trip because it is not possible to eat the portion you used to do :). This was an amazing trip and the countries’ cuisine tell one more than a long history and sometimes boring museums.

This was our first time booking a tour with Cascade travel, and next year we plan to travel to Armenia with them again. It was quite simply outstanding – from start to finish. We took a guaranteed trip to Georgia September 2022. Kazbegi was the most wonderful day of this tour, the road was amazing. Prometheus cave was wonderful as well, Tbilisi is a nice city for walks and evening dining, drinking.

Merilyn

Great organization, no concerns. Just read the reviews before travelling.

Our trip through Armenia and Georgia was organized with great care by Nune from Cascade Travel. We enjoyed the days and the diverse impressions very much and were taken care of very thoughtfully by our drivers in both countries, though Georgians drive like crazy, Irakli was calm and didn’t pay attention to other drivers tricks and fast driving. We can highly recommend Cascade travel without any reservations!

I would highly recommend booking your trip to Armenia and Georgia with Cascade Travel. The tour managers are really good with great customer care, Nune, the founder, personally was my contact person. My emails were responded quickly. I travelled with my wife who’s vegetarian, and all the restaurants had a note to have veggie food for her. When passing the border our driver drove us to the Georgian side, though there were some travelers passing the approximately 200 m bridge by foot. No kind of problem emerged during the tour and I just simply wondered if something more could be done for us.

To say that we left Armenia satisfied to say nothing! Armenia is so small country but absolutely amazing and different. We did rock climbing, caving, kayaking, hiking. The terrain changes so quickly, just a couple of kilometers drive brought us to totally different place and views. Antuan our guide – driver was maybe the best guide we have every had during 10 years of traveling. Hotels were well chosen, Tufenkian at lake Sevan was just amazing with an open air heated pool. Make sure you have hat and sun protection cream as Lake Sevan where you do kayak ride is almost 2000 m above sea and it is very easy to get burnt, also Mount Aragats is almost 4000 m., long sleeve jacket is needed. The trip was absolutely stunning thank you Cascade travel and especially Antuan.

Beautiful trekking! Geghama mountains are incredible, with lakes, age-old dragon stones, green meadows and absolute silence. The area is not crowded right when you start hiking from Sevaberd village to the route end. A few hikers can be met. All was organized well, make sure to take your own sleeping bag, the company provides other camping gear, tents, mats. Hot dinner and tea is provided in the evening. The logistics team takes everything, all you need to carry is a raincoat, water and warm jacket. Aragats mount is amazing, seeing the inside of the volcano crater and the other side of the mountain is fantastic. Thanks guys for organizing this trip.

Nice trip to unknown world

I first read about these countries on Lonely Planet and never would think they are this worth to see. I found a small group tour which I booked as they offered a discount and there was a possibility to find a travel mate and share a room with. Patrick from Canada was my roommate but we became good friends and decided to travel together further. Countries are really nice, the food is very tasty, and there are lost of excellent cafes, bars and pubs in both capitals. Pity this company organizes tours only in Armenia and Georgia otherwise I would use them again, so highly recommended.

We booked this tour private for our family to Armenia with some changes. We were traveling with kids who would get bored with sightseeing only. So we added a zipline, river rafting and paddle-boarding activities in the tour. The last one paddle-boarding was just amazing. we rode boards in Azat reservoir, very close to Garni temple, it was evening time and sunset was astonishing, all surrounding hills and rocks where red as the water itself. Karen, the instructor is very skillful and sweet guy, we simply enjoyed a couple of hours ride. This was definitely the highlight of the tour.

The week was absolutely amazing and perfect from start to finish. We had a great group mixed from US, Australia and Canada. Every day hike was absolutely different from each other, from red rock canyon to a forest lake and waterfall, terrain was absolutely amazing and thanks to its difference we didn’t get tired as every day we were amazed by fantastic landscape. The accommodation was chosen thoroughly, we stayed in a family run guesthouse in Yegeghnadzor, the owner was also a winemaker, who joined us for the dinner. We tasted a couple of wines and enjoyed an evening chat with Armen. Our guide Arthur was very knowledgeable not only in hiking trails but also told us a lot about the country. We were especially interested in how the country lives nowadays, taxes, labour market etc. I would definitely recommend Cascade travel as we had the most hustle free travel in the last 10 years.

A young but promising company

When I started the research of an agency to travel to Armenia and Georgia I came up with the Cascade travel website. Everything was clear and well described but I couldn’t find any information online besides their web page. When I went into details I saw the founder Nune led another agency for 8 years so understood she is professional in her job and the communication with her showed that. I chose this agency and was not mistaken. I booked Armenia Georgia tour for May. Both countries are very beautiful, nature was just blooming in flowers and we even experienced snow in Stepantsminda when travelling to Gergeti Trinity Church. Tour itinerary is balanced, drives are not too long, around 3 hours with stops and it doesn’t feel that long as the views are amazing. Every day we asked about several photo stops and were not refused. Sites are interesting, landscapes leave speechless, food is amazing. What I saw exceeded my expectations, these small countries are worth seeing.

A true Armenian experience! This trip was an outstanding experience as well as a great value. For me it was the perfect combination of engaging conversations, historic and cultural background and endless mountains cascading in the horizon. We did and saw a lot, but had time to explore on our own as well as just relax. The variety of the itinerary was also a plus – visiting age-old monasteries, small towns and remote rural areas. I was surprised to see a small cheese farm, producing delicate cheeses aged in wine and brandy. Hikes were moderate and each day was absolutely different from the previous. We walked along the water reservoir and saw the monastery which is half a year old and covered with water. Aragats southern peak was also an impressive hike. Clean, comfortable, and cosy hotels definitely added value to our trip. Staff everywhere was very friendly, true Armenian style. I read a lot about Armenian hospitality before travelling but never thought people would be this open. Overall Armenia is a heaven for hikers and we were happy enough to choose a right travel agency, to really enjoy and not worry about anything. Cascade travel is highly recommended.

Everything was well organized, thank you guys for that quick and simple booking process and meeting me and my girlfriend with flowers at the airport as I wrote our arrival day was her birthday. That was a nice surprise.

Good organised private tour to Georgia

I found the Cascade Travel website and along with other companies contacted them for a private tour to Georgia in early May 2022. It was an easy and clear booking process with quick response and information from the staff. I did very little prepayment 100 EUR per person, and full amount we paid on the spot, which made us feel comfortable, besides they guarantee refund of prepayment if something happens and we refuse to travel. On the day, it was a perfect start with an airport meeting with a polite driver and clean comfortable car. We met Keti, our guide. She was very knowledgeable, polite and helpful. This trip was good organised.

I am happy to be the first to write a customer review for this agency. Whether this trip is outstanding or usually good depends on your expectations. You will definitely not see the Eiffel Tower or BigBen but there are lots of historical and cultural sites along with absolutely breathtaking landscapes. Georgian Military Highway was an amazing drive on the edge of a deep bottomless canyon. We were lucky enough to see Mount Kazbek, which left us speechless. Armenia amazed us as well. Selim pass is very impressive, one of the highest in the region, Lake Sevan. Both capitals are lovely and very different, Yerevan with more canonical streets, with pink buildings, Tbilisi is in the opposite, colourful buildings are scattered on the hills along the river Kura. Both local guides were kind and knowledgeable, we experienced truly local homemade food, met winemakers, lavash bread bakers and farmers. The trip was absolutely flawless thanks to our local tour operator Cascade Travel.
