Moscow, home to fairytale pepper-pot churches, Red Square, Lenin’s tomb and some serious nightlife is an obvious pull. So too is St Petersburg; its Heritage Museum is an embarrassment of riches that will have you wandering open-mouthed from one masterpiece to another.
Away from the big cities is the real Russia. Relax in the spa town of Pyatigorsk in the Caucasus Mountains, go rafting or Skiing in Siberia or play some real-life ‘Risk’ in Kamchatka: it’s famous for extreme sports.

Wanderlust tips
If you’re buying caviar to take home, look for the label CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), an international trade-control to reduce sturgeon poaching.
Russians have notoriously sharp elbows in queues or at bus or train stations; sharpen your own or let it slide.
Many smaller towns have their own airport but be aware that facilities are often extremely limited.
When to go to Russia
June and September are popular times to visit Russia.
July and August are the hottest months but can be rainy.
Avoid late October and March/April when the snow can be slushy rather than picturesque.
Russian winters are bone-chillingly cold but quite beautiful.
International airports
Sheremetyevo-2 (28km from Moscow), Domodedovo (22km from Moscow), Pulkovo 2 (17km from St Petersburg). Many other cities also have international flights.
Getting around in Russia
Russia is massive but is blessed with an excellent train and internal flight network. River cruises or scheduled river passenger boats are also good options for getting around. Long distance buses serve areas not covered by the trains. Driving can be hairy.
Russia accommodation
Russia has everything from 5 star palaces, ghastly Soviet-era concrete mega-hotels to friendly homestays and cheap crashpads.
Organised campsites are rare but wild camping is usually allowed. For something different, try staying in a turbaza – a basic Russian style holiday camp with outdoor activities thrown in.
Russia food & drink
Soups, salads, nibbles, nutty breads, calorific main courses and sugary desserts are all on offer in Russia – slimming it’s not. Look for the colourful and warming borsch (beetroot soup), exquisite caviar, zharkoye (hotpot) and pelmeni (Russian-style filled dumplings). Vegetarians should note that borsch is often made with beef stock.
Drinking is a national pastime in Russia. Look for different types of vodka like starka (apple and pear leaves) or pertsovka (pepper).
Health & safety in Russia
See your GP about vaccinations before you travel: tickborne encephalitis is a problem in rural Russia during the summer.
Pick-pocketing is a big problem in cities and bus stations and watch for groups of children who have been known to surround foreigners and take what they can get. Check with the FCO before travelling for the latest advice about danger zones.

Summer Olympic Games means special food, drinks and discounts. Here's some
Planning to spend many hours watching the summer olympic games if cooking isn't a main event, here's some specials to contend with in the days ahead.
The 2024 Paris Olympics are on. Over the next two weeks or so, more than 320 events in 32 different sports will be contested during the Games .
Geez, it makes you hungry and thirsty just thinking of all the effort that's gone into the preparation and will go into the competitions.
With more than half of Americans expected to watch – 59% according to a UKG Workforce Institute survey – it makes sense that restaurants cater to viewers' hunger and thirst with specials during the Games. More than 27 million plan to miss some work to watch the Olympics, too, the survey of 1,112 U.S. adults found.
Whether watching at home or out on the town, here's some Olympic specials to consider.
2024 Paris Olympic Games: Full schedule with TV, time and streaming for every event
California Pizza Kitchen
To mark the Olympic Games opening ceremonies, California Pizza Kitchen is offering free Coca-Cola with any pizza purchase on Friday, July 26. During the Games, there's also all-day happy hours every day with 50% off on a special selection of red, white and blue drinks including the Red-Berry Sangria, Sparkling Mojito, and Blueberry Lemon Drop. And for dessert, there's the new, limited-time Red, White + Blue Butter Cake, made with strawberries and blueberries.
Kentucky Fried Chicken
The fried chicken chain has some specials for the Olympic Games including 40% off a 12-piece chicken order (bucket includes a mix of 3 drumsticks, 3 thighs, 3 breasts, and 3 wings) and 50% off chicken sandwiches. There's also a saucy nuggets party pack (available online only). To get these, and other KFC specials , order on KFC.com or the KFC app .
Krispy Kreme
The doughnut maker has some special Olympic rings of a different kind available during the Games: its limited-time Passport to Paris doughnut collection . The three new Parisian dessert-inspired offerings include a Créme Brûlée doughnut, Double Chocolate Éclair Doughnut, and a Raspberry & Vanilla Créme Doughnut.
The doughnuts are available in-shop and for pickup or delivery via Krispy Kreme's app and website. Select stores also get 6-packs delivered fresh daily.
Members of the Krispy Kreme rewards loyalty program can also get a free iced coffee Friday and a free doughnut Tuesday, July 30, with any purchase.

Michelob Ultra , the exclusive beer sponsor of Team USA for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, has special-edition Team USA designed bottles sporting an American flag and Olympic rings.
There's also a “Toast to Team USA” rebate available in stores, bars and restaurants – and online (the online rebate gets you $7 back when you buy an 18-pack or larger Michelob Ultra product; rebates available in certain states).
Fast-food chain Red Robin has a special Gold Medal Burger available during the games. The sandwich, which weighs 18 ounces – equal to the weight of a gold medal, has three patties and American cheese slices, plus Red's relish, mayo, pickles, onion, lettuce and tomato. It's served with a bottomless supply of Steak fries or another bottomless item of your choice.
You can wash it down with the Star-Spangled Spritzer, made with Sprite, wild raspberry syrup and topped with blue cotton candy, and served in a light-up souvenir cup (available for dine-in only).
Smoothie King
To celebrate the beginning of the Olympics, Smoothie King has a $5 Friday special on July 26. Get a 32-ounce smoothie for $5. And members of the Smoothie King Healthy Rewards program can also earn triple points. (Deal not valid on 32-ounce Dude Perfect Smoothies.)
Tiff's Treats
Here's a snack for your Olympics watch parties: red, white and blue sprinkle cookies from Tiff’s Treats . The Austin, Texas-based company has these Olympics-themed baked sugar cookies available through the end of July (available in delivery zones across the U.S.).
Yogurtland 's 2024 Froyo Games start on Saturday, July 27, and members of the chain's Real Rewards loyalty program can win Yogurtland merchandise, eGift cars and rewards dollars and points.

Moscow Jails Russian-American Journalist Kurmasheva for Over Six Years
Russian-American journalist for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) Alsu Kurmasheva, who is in custody after she was accused of violating Russia's law on foreign agents, attends a court hearing in Kazan, Russia May 31, 2024. REUTERS/Alexey Nasyrov/File Photo
MOSCOW (Reuters) -A Russian court has sentenced Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist for U.S.-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), to 6-1/2 years in prison for spreading false information about the Russian army, the court revealed on Monday.
A spokesperson for the court in the southern city of Kazan said Kurmasheva had been sentenced on Friday following two days of court proceedings. Her lawyer did not immediately reply to a Reuters question about whether she would appeal and the U.S. embassy did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
Friday was also the day a separate court in Yekaterinburg sentenced another U.S. citizen, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, to 16 years in prison for espionage, following a three-day trial held behind closed doors. His newspaper and the United States have called the trial a sham, and Washington says it is working to secure his release.
RFE/RL President and CEO Stephen Capus called Kurmasheva's trial and conviction "a mockery of justice".
"The only just outcome is for Alsu to be immediately released from prison by her Russian captors," Capus said in a statement. "It's beyond time for this American citizen, our dear colleague, to be reunited with her loving family."
Kurmasheva, 47, is based in Prague and has been held since Oct. 18 when she was arrested while visiting family in her native Russian region of Tatarstan. She had first been detained briefly earlier last year while trying to leave Russia, and her passports were confiscated.
A court initially found her guilty of failing to declare that she had a U.S. passport, mandatory under Russian law, and fined her. A week later, she was charged with failing to register as a "foreign agent", to which she pleaded not guilty.
Her husband, Pavel Butorin, who also works for RFE/RL, wrote on X: "My daughters and I know Alsu has done nothing wrong. And the world knows it too. We need her home."
Butorin has said her arrest was related to a book that she had edited entitled "Saying No to War. 40 Stories of Russians Who Oppose the Russian Invasion of Ukraine".
Gershkovich and Kurmasheva are among at least a half dozen Americans convicted and jailed in Russia amid the biggest breakdown of relations between Moscow and the West since the Cold War.
RFE/RL, which has broadcast news about eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union since the Cold War, is funded by the U.S. Congress.
Russia has designated it as a "foreign agent" and an "undesirable" organisation, classifications that carry negative Cold War overtones and effectively ban it inside Russia.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has imposed long prison sentences on people convicted of criticising the war, under a law that bans spreading false information about the military.
Butorin has petitioned for the U.S. government to designate Kurmasheva as wrongfully detained, as Washington views the case of Gershkovich, to open up further diplomatic avenues to negotiate her release.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller declined to comment on the department's deliberations on whether to call Kurmasheva wrongfully detained, but said Washington had called for her release.
Repeating that call, Miller told reporters, "She's a dedicated journalist who is being targeted by Russian authorities for her uncompromising commitment to speaking the truth and her principled reporting."
