What to Drive to the World's Biggest Classic-Car Cruise

401675028 1425510463883 jpeg

By Aaron Bragman

The Woodward Dream Cruise  happens every year on the third Saturday in August as it has since 1995, when a group of volunteers decided to try and relive their youth from the 1950s and 1960s, back when evening entertainment in the Motor City often involved aimlessly cruising up and down the well-known street.

What to Drive to Your High School Reunion

The street is M-1, Woodward Avenue, stretching 25 miles from the heart of Detroit into the suburb of Pontiac, crossing a dozen communities and the sites of many former drive-in restaurants. Since its humble beginning, the event has become the largest classic-car gathering in the world, with this year’s event reportedly drawing 1.5 million people and more than 60,000 classic and modern specialty cars over the course of roughly a week. It is the ultimate event for the classic-car enthusiast, and the perfect place to take a classic, interesting or just plain fun car.

It just so happened this year that I had a test car that met all three descriptors. In a sea of extraordinary muscle cars, classic rarities and outrageous iron, what could possibly make the spectators sitting on the side of the road drop their Big Gulps, quickly whip out cameras, yell encouragement, flash thumbs-up and even in one case burst into applause en masse?

How about the redesigned 2013 SRT Viper GTS coupe in stunning, eye-popping Stryker Red Tinted Pearl?

The folks at Chrysler figured the Viper and the Dream Cruise would be a good match, and they weren’t kidding — I have never driven a car that received this much attention. It’s a 10-cylinder, rumbling, snorting, snarling beast of a sports car. Even amid tens of thousands of amazing cars driving (or in many cases sitting and idling in traffic) up and down Woodward Avenue, absolutely everyone gave the Viper some love.

To see how it went, scroll through our photo story below.

204929755 1425510494508 jpeg

Imagine waking up in the morning to find that this has slithered onto your driveway! The 2013 SRT Viper GTS coupe, equipped with an 8.4-liter V-10 making 640 horsepower and 600 pounds-feet of torque. The redesigned 2013 is a kinder, gentler Viper in much the same way that Raul Castro is a kinder, gentler Castro.

923924291 1425510494671 jpeg

Before heading to the Dream Cruise, you gotta wash off the bugs and grime that accumulate at seriously fast speeds! Automatic car wash? Not on your life — this Viper is covered in Stryker Red Tinted Pearl paint, a (get ready for this) $14,600 option. That is not a typo.

2110954050 1425510463608 jpeg

Starting the day off in enemy territory, the Viper visits the GM Heritage Center for a press breakfast. GM maintains a secret museum that isn’t open to the public, but sometimes media folks are allowed in for special events. The bright yellow Opel GT belongs to the global quality communications guy at GM.

1150857947 1425510479731 jpeg

Any time you get invited to visit the GM Heritage Center, you go. The company has a collection of more than 400 significant, concept, one-off prototype and production cars from its 100-plus years of history, a rotating hundred or so of which are on display at any given time.

1671606815 1425510463525 jpeg

Out onto Woodward, where you see all sorts of metal at the Dream Cruise. Regardless of what people were driving, all eyes fixated on the Viper as it rumbled past.

214850373 1425510494578 jpeg

The view out isn’t an easy one — a super-low roof means you’re always hunched down to see out of the bunker-slit windshield, and stoplights can only be viewed by their reflections on the Viper’s shapely hood. Please don’t comment about the safety of taking pictures behind the wheel. Average speed at the Woodward Dream Cruise is actually walking pace, so thick is the traffic.

I’d stop and stare too, if I saw me rolling by! Aside from the Crusher Orange Viper TA at the Chrysler display (all automakers rent out huge areas for vehicle displays and parties), mine was the only 2013 SRT Viper I saw all weekend.

Politicians use the Woodward Dream Cruise as great free advertising for local votes. Here, one of Michigan’s prospective U.S. Senate candidates makes a subtle appeal for support. Hint: She’s not representing the Green Party.

971685143 1425510480061 jpeg

While 2013 models were scarce, previous model years were out! Here’s a beautiful fourth-generation Viper SRT-10 rolling by.

1453740609 1425510463763 jpeg

Finding parking along Woodward Avenue during the Dream Cruise will either cost you serious coin or generally be impossible. Unless, of course, you have a brand-new Viper and roll up to the Chrysler display. VIP parking? Don’t mind if I do!

449798099 1425510463808 jpeg

That 8.4-liter V-10 puts out some serious heat. How serious? After cruising (actually, sitting in traffic) all morning and parking for lunch, a fly landed on the hood of the Viper — and promptly expired.

1284010061 1425510494564 jpeg

Chrysler had a huge parking lot in a key spot filled with significant vehicles from the past and present. Here’s the 2013 SRT Viper TA (for “Time Attack”) — a track-focused, hard-edged version of the Viper intended to slot in between the base and the GTS.

1434007925 1425510463891 jpeg

That hot V-10 engine and those side-exit exhausts can cook you in a hurry, especially in bumper-to-bumper cruise traffic. We took a break to cool off both man and machine with frosty chocolate milkshakes.

1975951909 1425510495108 jpeg

Dinner at one of the Detroit area’s hottest new eateries. The new Viper gets special parking placement from the valets on account of, well, being a new Viper.

1387329945 1425510480243 jpeg

It was an amazing weekend in a fantastic car. And lest you think that my life is all supercars and luxury rides, here’s what I swapped the Viper for the subsequent week. Balance is important, I suppose.

Classic Car Cruise-In Checklist: What to Bring to a Show

Classic cars show on city streets with hoods up and spectators walking

Few pastimes are more rewarding for auto enthusiasts than driving through the neighborhood in a classic car and showing it off at a local cruise-in . Festivals, restaurants, dealerships, and community groups across the United States sponsor cruise-ins throughout the year — and you probably have one going on this month in your community!

If you’re still new at figuring out how these events work, make sure you don’t leave any of the following items at home. Use this classic car cruise-in checklist to prepare for the event and make your experience memorable — whether you’re a participant or a spectator.

Keep Your Vintage Vehicle Sparkling: Tips for caring for a classic car

6 items everyone should bring to a car show

Cash: If you have to pay an entrance fee at the gate or want to buy concessions, have a couple of Hamiltons in your pocket.

An old, car-related T-shirt: If you want to look like a regular on the car show circuit, wear a T-shirt from a previous cruise-in you’ve attended. You know — the off-white one showing the oversized hot rod and flaming cursive font. If you don’t own one, you can probably find one at your local thrift store.

Sunglasses: Not only will sunglasses help you inspect cars without shielding your eyes from the shiny chrome reflections, but they’ll also give you a stylish appearance (but secretly, they’re to hide your expressions of disgust, amazement, or bewilderment when you see what some people have done to their cars …).

Protection from the sun:  Unless you’re going to a cruise-in on a dreary, overcast day (which is a risk if it rains ), you’ll be out in the heat for hours. Protect yourself from the sun with a hat, sunscreen, and a small canopy if you plan on hanging out for the day.

Camera: If you don’t have a camera built into your phone, bring an actual one along in case you want to snap a few photos — either of other cars or your own car for your scrapbook. Please, leave the selfie stick at home, though.

Snacks: Unless there are food vendors at the event, you might be stuck without grub if you don’t bring your own food for lunch. Have a bottle of water too so you stay hydrated throughout the day.

11 items that cruise-in participants should carry

Registration tags for the event: If you need to pre-register for the event and were given a pass to show at the gate and/or display in your window, make sure you don’t leave it at home!

Awards: If you’ve been to multiple car shows before, you might have earned plaques or trophies for your snazzy car. Bring these along to impress spectators and other participants. If you don’t own any, have your kids draw some fake awards with crayons and cardboard tubes; their homemade trophies will probably earn you even more fans.

Car info:  A poster on the unit itself and its history, plus the model’s production background, is a great way to help people appreciate how great your car really is.

Polish: If your car has been collecting dust in the garage and has lost its sheen, give it a quick wipe-down and light buffing after you park it at the cruise-in. A shiny body and engine give your car an attractive luster.

Photographs:  If you’ve put a lot of work into restoring your car, bring pictures of your step-by-step journey and you slaving away on it. This personalizes your car to spectators and will earn you respect as someone who didn’t just purchase their car as it is. Here are some tips for taking good pictures of cars outdoors .

Portable lights:  If you want to illuminate an aspect of your car — such as the engine or undercarriage — that you put a lot of work into, small spotlights will emphasize the most noteworthy spots.

Music: Many car cruise-ins feature DJs or bands playing music during the event, but if this event does not, bring a stereo and a mix of tunes from the year your car was built. You can have it playing from inside your car to set the mood for your car’s time period.

Novelty items:  You can’t bring your car to a cruise-in and not have that toddler-sized doll propped up against your bumper. That’s why you purchased it … right?

Contact information: Chances are you’re going to make new friends at this event as you mingle with other classic auto enthusiasts. Have your information on hand in small cards you can pass out to keep in touch with people.

Folding chairs: You won’t be spending the whole time walking around and looking at other people’s cars. Give your legs a break and bring some chairs to set up — including a couple of extras in case new friends want to join you.

Towels:  If you park your car on the grass and are walking around in the dirt, bring a towel or change of shoes to make sure you don’t track any gunk into your nice car at the end of the day.

Being prepared will equip you for a fun afternoon with fellow automotive enthusiasts. After you’ve mastered the local cruise-in circuit, maybe one day you’ll be ready for Woodward !

5 can't-miss events when Kool April Nites classic car show rolls into Redding this week

Time to dig out your leather jacket, saddle shoes or bell bottom jeans for some citywide throwback fun.

The first events in Redding’s huge spring festival, the Kool April Nites classic car show, will drive out this week.

Kool April Nites celebrates America’s affection for vehicles and 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s car culture with a 10-day schedule packed with variety shows, community breakfasts, a concert, a drive-in movie and daily 'show and shine' car displays at venues throughout Redding and Anderson.

Started in 1990, this year’s festival is the 32nd Kool April Nites. The non-profit’s board of directors had to cancel the show in 2020 and 2021 due to social gathering restrictions during the COVID pandemic.

The citywide celebration returned with gusto in 2022, Kool April Nites President Debra Fox said.

About 10,000 people typically flock to the Big Show and Shine held during Kool April Nites at the Redding Civic Auditorium. The celebration packs hotels and restaurants, attracting visitors from throughout the West, according to the Redding Chamber of Commerce.

If you can’t make it to all of the more than 40 official Kool April Nites events, here are five no-miss activities to check out this year.

Classic cars cruise around Redding

The Cruise is one of the most popular Kool April Nites events and the kickoff for the weekend program.

Motorists parade their classic cars through central Redding from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 26.

Drivers in the cruise ride along Dana Drive from the Mt. Shasta Mall, turn right onto Churn Creek Road, then right onto Cypress Avenue, right onto Hilltop Drive and back onto Dana Drive.

The city closes off these stretches of road at 5 p.m., while spectators start setting up folding chairs and picnic blankets along the cruise route. Event planners recommend people arrive early to find a spot, but you can see the cruise from the sidewalk anywhere along the route.

Admission is free.

Take in a family-friendly drive-in movie at the Redding Civic Auditorium

C.R. Gibbs American Grille hosts the Kool April Nites Drive-In Movie Night at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 at the Redding Civic Auditorium, 700 Auditorium Drive.

Park on the lawn to watch this year's car-themed comedy film, the 1969 classic Walt Disney movie "Herbie, the Love Bug." After numerous wins, race car driver Jim Douglas (Dean Jones) credits his mad driving skills for taking him to the top ― until he realizes his car, Herbie, is both brains and brawn behind his success. This film is rated G.

Classic cars park on the lawn starting at 7 p.m. All other vehicles park starting at 7:30 p.m. People on foot can bring a picnic blanket or lawn chairs to watch.

See the Big Show and Shine at the Redding Civic

Kool April Nites' main event is the Big Show and Shine from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 27.

See up to 2,000 classic cars on display at the Redding Civic Auditorium.

Cost is $10 for a wristband that admits holders to all areas of the show. Wristbands are available at the gate or in advance at local Napa Auto Parts stores. People ages 70 or older and those ages 12 and younger get in free.

The Big Show and Shine is the final and largest of the 32 Kool April Nites official show and shines in Redding and Anderson. The first, the Spring Fest Car and Bike Show, takes place from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19 at 1504 Market St. in downtown Redding.

For more information go to koolaprilnites.com .

Note to readers: If you appreciate the work we do here at the Redding Record Searchlight, please consider subscribing yourself or giving the gift of a subscription to someone you know.

Pig out on pancakes flipped by North State 'cowboys'

North State philanthropic group the Asphalt Cowboys cook up two community pancake breakfasts, both from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday April 27 and Sunday April 28 at the Redding Civic Auditorium.

Cost is $7 for pancakes, sausages, and a choice of orange juice, milk or coffee, Asphalt Cowboy Andy Clemens said.

Attend a concert or musical variety show by North State rock band, high school

North State classic rock tribute band Jinx takes the stage from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday April 27 at the Redding Civic Auditorium. Sing along to high-energy favorites by the Cars, Pat Benatar, Pink Floyd, Joan Jett, Billy Idol, John 'Cougar' Melencamp and other '70s and '80s rockers.

This year's Kool April Nites lineup also includes three high school productions at the Redding Civic Auditorium.

  • Students in Enterprise High School's music department perform the Starship Variety Hour from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday April 22. Ticket prices have yet to be announced.
  • Students in Parsons Junior High School's vocal music department perform "Puttin' on the Glitz" from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday April 23. The concert is free. A fundraiser dinner costs $15.
  • Foothill High School's Club Cougar Orchestra hosts a dinner show with dancing before the drive-in movie, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday April 24. Dinner is catered by O’Dell’s Craft Barbecue. Tickets are $20 at ticketleap.com.

Mom left kids home alone for several days while she went on a cruise, deputies say

HOUSTON (Gray News) - A 29-year-old mother allegedly left her kids home alone for several days while she went on a cruise to Puerto Rico, according to Texas authorities.

Harris County deputies said Lakesha Woods Williams left her high-rise apartment on April 4 to catch a flight to Miami. However, she didn’t return until days later, KTRK reported.

On Tuesday, deputies responded to a welfare check at her apartment, where they found her 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter home alone.

Deputies said the apartment smelled of urine and had trash and leftover food thrown everywhere.

The children eventually told deputies that their mother left for a trip. While on vacation, the children said she would use a webcam and cell phone to check in on them.

KTRK reported that Williams returned home Wednesday night and initially lied about her identity.

Officials determined the children were healthy, and Child Protective Services released them to their aunt.

Williams was charged with abandoning a child with intent to return.

If War Breaks Out With China, This Will Be the Most Deadly Submarine in the Sea

The sub only reveals itself when it returns to port—or when it unleashes its lethal arsenal of cruise missiles and torpedoes.

One of the deadliest weapons in the world is one that you aren’t meant to see.

Silently cruising beneath the waves, the Virginia -class attack submarines of the U.S. Navy only reveal themselves when they return to port—or when they unleash their arsenal of cruise missiles and torpedoes.

In fact, the Virginia -class subs are arguably the most important weapon for extinguishing a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. Such a conflict would likely feature salvoes of Chinese ballistic missiles to neutralize U.S. airpower by devastating air bases such as Guam. Surface ships would be targeted by an array of weapons, including “carrier-killer” ballistic and hypersonic missiles. While China is improving its anti-submarine warfare capabilities , the Virginia -class subs may be the most survivable of U.S. platforms.

Yet for such an important vessel, Virginia doesn’t have many sisters. There are only 21 Virginia -class subs in service, with another 17 on order. While technical details of submarines are among any navy’s most closely guarded secrets—there’s a reason why the U.S. sub fleet is called the “Silent Service”—what is publicly known points to the immense capabilities of the Virginia class.

The initial Virginia -class subs are 377 feet long, 34 feet wide, and have a displacement of 7,800 tons when submerged. The latest Block V models, at 461 feet long and 10,200 tons, will have a lengthened hull to accommodate the Virginia Payload Module containing additional cruise missile tubes. Powered by a single nuclear reactor, the Virginias can travel underwater at more than 25 knots (28 miles per hour) while remaining hidden in the ocean depths for months at a time.

the uss virginia fast attack submarine enters service

To see how much submarine technology has progressed since World War II, consider that a U.S. Navy Gato -class sub from 1943 would have weighed just 2,400 tons submerged, and sailed at 9 knots (10 miles) per hour submerged and 21 knots (24 miles per hour) on the surface. And a Gato would have sailed on the surface whenever possible. The diesel-powered subs of the 1940s were slower underwater, and they needed to surface to recharge their batteries while the crew gulped some desperately needed fresh air.

Over the two decades since the namesake of the Virginia -class—the USS Virginia —was launched in 2003, the ships have only grown more lethal. The first models packed a considerable punch, with 12 Vertical Launch System (VLS) tubes for Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles, as well as four torpedo tubes for Mk-48 torpedoes or mines. The Block III version replaced the VLS with two six-missile Virginia Payload Tubes. The Block V boats now under construction will be floating missile batteries: a new Virginia Payload Module inserted amidships will add four big vertical launch tubes armed with seven Tomahawks apiece for a total of 40 tubes. (You can find a cutaway diagram of the Block V here .)

With dozens of subsonic Tomahawk missiles that can hit targets 1,000 miles away (and eventually even more advanced hypersonic missiles ) the Virginia class can strike deep into enemy territory while sailing in distant waters. But to focus only on weapons is to miss the qualities that have made submarines so lethal ever since the first U-boats appeared in the First World War. A U.S. Navy Ticonderoga -class cruiser has 122 VLS missile tubes and a Ford -class carrier can launch almost 100 aircraft—but neither can hide under the ocean. It’s the ability of a sub to stay hidden, to detect a target without being detected, and to destroy that target and escape that makes these vessels so formidable. It’s also why the best weapon to destroy an enemy nuclear submarine is with another submarine.

And the Virginia class may be the world’s best at performing that mission.

“They are very quiet and they have very good sensors on them,” Bryan Clark, a former U.S. Navy submarine officer and now a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, tells Popular Mechanics . “In terms of going up against Chinese and Russian submarines, the Virginia class is superior because it will detect the enemy before it gets detected.”

Clark served for years on older U.S. attack and ballistic missile subs before he first set foot aboard a Virginia -class boat. It was an eye-opening experience. A Virginia versus a Los Angeles “is like night and day just in terms of digitization and computerization.”

For example, forget those World War II movies where the submarine captain peers through the periscope. On the Virginia class, “the periscope doesn’t go through the hull,” Clark explains. “The periscope is just a camera on a mast that goes up. And then you sit in the control room and watch the video display.”

Even foreign nations want to embrace Virginia . Australia has decided to replace its Collins -class diesel subs with five Virginia -class boats in the 2030s.

The Compromise Sub

Calling a $4 billion submarine “cheap” sounds like an oxymoron. But among other reasons, the U.S. Navy built the Virginia class because its first choice was too expensive. In the early 1980s, the Navy worried that existing Los Angeles -class attack subs—first commissioned in 1976—couldn’t cope with a new generation of Soviet subs like the quiet Akula class . The Navy’s response was the Seawolf class , a group of highly advanced submarines that would have cost $3 billion apiece (around $6 billion today), making them the most expensive U.S. attack submarines. In the end, the Navy built just three Seawolfs .

uss california arrives in lisbon port

At the same time, with the end of the Cold War, there seemed to be little need for ultra-expensive attack subs designed to combat a shrinking and decrepit Russian submarine fleet (China had yet to be perceived as a threat at this point). Instead of the blue-water fleet in the North Atlantic, the Navy focused on littoral warfare—conducting minor operations close to shore—in regions such as the Persian Gulf.

.css-2l0eat{font-family:UnitedSans,UnitedSans-roboto,UnitedSans-local,Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif;font-size:1.625rem;line-height:1.2;margin:0rem;padding:0.9rem 1rem 1rem;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-2l0eat{font-size:1.75rem;line-height:1;}}@media(min-width: 48rem){.css-2l0eat{font-size:1.875rem;line-height:1;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-2l0eat{font-size:2.25rem;line-height:1;}}.css-2l0eat b,.css-2l0eat strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-2l0eat em,.css-2l0eat i{font-style:italic;font-family:inherit;} The ultimate question for the Virginia class boils down to this: how does it compare to the Russian and Chinese submarines that it would hunt—and that would be hunting it?

As design work began in the early 1990s to replace the Los Angeles class, the Navy needed an attack sub that wasn’t quite as capable as the Seawolf class: less expensive and easier to build. The result was the Virginia class, which incorporated many technologies from the Seawolf , but in a smaller and slower form. Including the Virginia Payload Module, the latest version will cost $4.3 billion per sub, according to the Congressional Research Service.

The Virginia class was “sort of a compromise,” Clark says. “Let’s build a ship that’s kind of capable of doing all the things that submarines might have to do. A little bit of special operations and sending SEALs ashore, a little bit of littoral intelligence gathering, some cruise missile strikes. It was a jack-of-all-trades kind of submarine.”

Hunt or Be Hunted

But visions of fighting second-rate powers such as Iran and North Korea have been replaced by the specter of a new Cold War as the U.S. contemplates war against major powers like Russia and China for the first time in decades. The ultimate question for the Virginia class boils down to this: how does it compare to the Russian and Chinese submarines that it would hunt—and that would be hunting it?

When U.S. naval experts analyzed Chinese perceptions of American submarines in 2008, they found that Chinese experts “respect Virginia -class submarines for their advanced technology and quietness.”

Still, other world powers have their own formidable submarines that the Virginia class must contend with.

The best comparison is between the Virginia class and the Yasen M class, Russia’s most advanced attack submarine. The 13,800-ton Yasen-M “is the crown jewel of the contemporary Russian Navy and perhaps the pinnacle of present-day Russian military technology,” RAND Corp. researcher Edward Geist tells Popular Mechanics .

yasen class sub launching

The Yasen-M is a heavily armed vessel designed to launch standoff attacks with missiles. It’s armed with 32 missile tubes that can fire Zircon hypersonic and Kalibr cruise missiles, as well as 10 torpedo tubes.

“From the perspective of submarine quieting, Virginias and the older Seawolf are the quietest submarines on the planet,” Michael Petersen, director of the Russia Maritime Studies Institute at the U.S. Naval War College, tells Popular Mechanics . “The Yasen-M is likewise one of the world’s quietest submarines, but reportedly still has not achieved the same level of quieting as U.S. submarines. Nevertheless, it is extremely difficult to locate and track.”

Petersen rates the Virginia class as superior in sonar technology and signal processing software. “Quieting isn’t the only thing that matters in submarine warfare,” Petersen explains. “Sensor capability is equally crucial. It isn’t clear to me that Russia has yet been able to match the sensor capabilities on the Virginia class.”

Ironically, the Yasen-M may be Russia’s Seawolf . Geist believes Russia can only afford to build a handful of them.

Virginia’s True Enemy

The most dangerous enemy of the Virginia class may not be Russian hunter-killer submarines or Chinese destroyers, but rather its own maintenance requirements. Whatever the virtues of the Virginia class, they have proven to be a challenge in upkeep. For one thing, parts are wearing out sooner than the designers had anticipated. “This has really driven the availability of the Virginia class down,” Clark says.

Though the Navy is keeping mum about specific items, some of the problems appear to be caused by commercial-off-the-shelf components that were adopted to save money. “Because you didn’t think they would break or wear out so soon, you don’t have a supply chain for them,” Clark notes. “You didn’t buy a big pile of them anticipating frequent failures.”

Compounding the problem is a lack of Navy shipyard capacity that’s depriving submarines and other warships of necessary maintenance. About one-third of the Navy’s 50 attack subs are currently non-operational at any given time due to maintenance delays. Not surprisingly, the Navy’s next-generation attack sub will be designed for easier maintenance.

And with Australia slated to receive five existing U.S. Virginias , plus the Navy considering whether to expand its attack sub fleet to 72 boats, there will be a need for more subs. But the shipyard capacity may not be there. The Navy is aiming to procure two Virginias per year, for a total of 10, between 2025 and 2028. Yet it may take until 2028 before shipyards can produce more than the current equivalent of 1.2 subs per year.

Nonetheless, the Virginia class will remain the backbone of the U.S. attack submarine fleet for decades to come. Continuously upgraded with new weapons and sensors, it will remain a formidable platform that lurks silently under the ocean.

500 Newfoundlanders Wound up on the Same Cruise. They Had a Time.

There were we so many Newfoundlanders on board, the company roped off the main pool deck one night and hosted a party exclusively for passengers from the province, Mr. Hiscock said.

About 3,000 people were on board when the ship set sail for the Caribbean on April 6. Pamela Pardy bought her ticket in November and soon began seeing social media posts from friends and friends of friends saying they, too, would be on the cruise.

Her travel agent then confirmed that 250 couples from the province, excluding kids and grandparents, would also be on board.

Travelers Won’t Know Where They’re Going on This New ‘Mystery’ Voyage From Windstar Cruises

“You felt part of something bigger,” Ms. Pardy said. “That’s the only way that I can explain it.”

She said she hopes Expedia Cruises will offer another cruise full of Newfoundlanders—this time on purpose.
