What people love about Kochi (Cochin) Tours

Overall a good experience even with information mostly given was in India.

What I was looking for: - do more cultural activities than when travelling solo (I usually do none) - stay with a chill group of people for a week - see Kerala that I heard so much about My experience: - this tour has limited activities. It’s in the itinerary. I booked the only one that matches my dates without checking too much… - the group was pretty cool. The restaurants / bars we were recommended were bad though. - I got to see Kerala. The walk through the rice fields was amazing Overall, I’d say go for it if you’re not comfortable travelling on your own. The 2 days in the backwaters were worth going on a tour. The beach is better done solo travelling / resort / hostel.

All went smoothly, good srandard of accommodation and flexibility in the itinerary. Driver spoke reasonable English so we were able to communicate and he made some suggestions which were appreciated. Houseboat was relaxing, great crew and experience.

1. Fort Kochi Beach

If you want to take a stroll in a peaceful ambiance with the mesmerising sight of sea and the touch of soft sand on your feet come to Fort Kochi Beach. 2. Chinese Fishing Nets

The Chinese fishing nets at Fort Kochi is one of the unique and popular tourist attraction. This is also a proof of Chinese influence in Kerala. It is believed that these nets were introduced by traders from the court of the Chinese ruler Kublai Khan between 1350 and 1450.

Other than Kochi these nets are only found in China. This 10 meter long fishing net that lines the sea front looks like hammocks. Local fisherman used this for a mechanical method of catching fish. These are usually used for a unique and unusual method of fishing.

3. St Francis Church

St.Francis church, the first European church in India is located at Fort Kochi by the Portuguese. This historically important church is built in 1510 AD. It is in this church the great traveller Vasco Da Gama was buried. His Tombstone still stands to tell about his glorious life.

In 1503 the church was a wooden chapel built by Franciscan friars and was rebuilt in 1516 by the dutch. In 1795 the British converted it to an Anglican church and gave its present name.

4. Indo Portuguese Museum (closed on Monday)

Indo Portuguese Museum situated in Fort Kochi reflects the influence of Portuguese culture in Kerala, mainly in the western parts of Kochi. Late Dr. Joseph Kureethra, Bishop of Kochi, was the main mastermind behind the establishment of this museum.  

The museum has five main sections namely Altar, Treasure, Procession, Civil Life and Cathedral. The collection includes a piece of the altar made in teak from 16th century and Indo-Portuguese Monstrance from 18-19th century, both originating from the Church of Our Lady of Hope, Vypeen.

A chasuble (19th century) from Bishop’s House, Fort Kochi and a processional cross (17th century) from Santa Cruz Cathedral, Fort Kochi are some of the other items worth admiring. Other displayed items include St. Sebastian Church’s pulpit made of teakwood from the 19th century.

5. Mattancherry Palace / Dutch Palace (Friday Holiday)

Mattancherry Palace is a must see attraction in Kochi. This historically important palace built by Portuguese is marvellous. Mattancherry Palace also called as the Dutch palace draws thousands of tourists with its elegant charm. The architectural beauty of this palace is beyond words.

The fine collection of mural paintings depicting Hindu epics from Mahabharata and Ramayana decorates the interior of the palace. This wonderful palace displays royal costumes and palanquins. The temple of the tutelary deity of the Kochi Rajas stands in the courtyard of the palace.

6. Jewish Synagogue (Friday Saturday Holiday)

Jewish Synagogue situated at the Jew Town is the oldest Synagogue in all commonwealth nations. This synagogue built in 1567 reflects the uniqueness of the Jews. This synagogue is also called as Paradesi Synagogue and Mattancherry Synagogue.

This magnificently decorated Synagogue contains giant scrolls of old testament which is believed to be the oldest in the world. There are stone tablets with Mosaic Laws and Hebrew inscriptions. This historically important place reminds us about its past glory.

7. Jew Street

A famous shopping destination, especially among foreigners, Jew Street is a narrow lane between Mattancherry Palace and the Paradesi Synagogue. The street is lined with a number of shops selling antiques, sculptures, toys, clothes, flower oils, crystal fixtures, wooden furniture, spices etc.

The antique sellers are the descendants of Jews who settled here in 52 AD. A walk through this street is sure to remind one of the Jewish era that once blossomed here captivating the visitors with its old charm. At the end of lane is the famous Paradesi Synagogue which is thronged by hundreds of visitors everyday. People visiting this sacred synagogue need to follow a strict dress code.

8. Marine Drive

Last week, Post released “Pour Me A Drink” featuring Blake Shelton, while also announcing that his debut country album F-1 Trillion will be out on August 16th. His first single off the upcoming album and mega-smash “I Had Some Help” with Morgan Wallen is continuing to dominate the charts. Upon release, it crash landed at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, tallying “the highest weekly sales and streams since 2020” and remained at #1 for five consecutive weeks, emerging as “the longest running number one song of 2024 . ”  

This tour follows ‘ If Y’all Weren’t Here, I’d Be Crying ’ run last year, his highly successful trek across the US and Canada. WestJet receives second strike notice from AMFA within hours of returning to the bargaining table targeting busiest travel weekend of summer

WestJet on Tuesday received a second strike notification, in the span of just over a week, from the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), the union that represents WestJet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) and other Technical Operations employees under the bargaining unit. The work stoppage, initiated by AMFA, could occur as early as Friday, June 28 at 5:30 p.m. MT in advance of the long weekend, where more than 70,000 guests per day are booked for travel.

AMFA delivered strike notice less than one day into the parties’ mutual agreement to return to the bargaining table across four days. WestJet presented a revised industry leading offer, which would see WestJet AME’s receive a 22 per cent increase over five years, making them by far the best paid AMEs in Canada. The union’s ask exceeds this mark by a long shot and remains unreasonable.

“Receiving a second strike notification from the union after they mutually agreed with WestJet in front of the CIRB to return to the bargaining table in good faith for an additional four days following last week’s initial disruption, is disheartening and unacceptable for our guests, employees and the communities and businesses that rely on our service,” said Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Chief Operating Officer. “We sincerely regret the stress and uncertainty AMFA’s tactics are causing Canadians, deliberately targeting the busy July long-weekend; however, we must hold strong on a reasonable outcome that protects affordable air travel for Canadians, for years to come.”

WestJet is committed to the collective bargaining process and remains available to reach an agreement on reasonable terms. The Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) ruling on first contract arbitration, under section 80 of the  Canada Labour Code , is still pending.

“WestJet presented the union with its latest Canadian industry-leading offer. It was swiftly dismissed, and a strike notification issued, leaving us with no choice but to follow with a lockout notice to manage travel disruption to hundreds of thousands of guests. It is our obligation in the coming days to ensure the safe and orderly takedown of our network and to minimize the risk of stranding our guests, our crew and our aircraft,” concluded Pen.

The union issuing notice does not mean travel disruption will occur. However, in the coming days, the WestJet Group will take all necessary actions to manage the impacts as much as possible, including:

• Beginning preparations to operate a reduced schedule.
• Proactively managing changes and cancellations, to ensure the ability to communicate with guests in advance of changes.
• Providing flexible change and cancel options for those who wish to make alternate arrangements.

Should flight delays or cancellations occur, impacted guests will be refunded or reaccommodated, as applicable.

For guests who booked directly with WestJet, changes to existing travel will be directly communicated via the email address provided at the time of booking. Guests who booked through a travel agent or online booking agency, are asked to contact them directly.
