This entry is not for the faint of heart. The in-person version of the tour requires visitors to sign a 40 page waiver, earning the attraction the title of America’s most extreme haunted house. Protesters have dubbed the business a “torture museum,” as the experience centers around psychological discomfort. While a live virtual haunted house walkthrough is not yet available, you can watch dozens of videos that will give you an inkling of the terror. Truthfully, three minute clips might be all you and your remote teammates can stomach. You may need to binge kitten clips between. Pittock Mansion

Newspaper editor Henry Pittock and his wife Georgiana built this French Renaissance-style mansion back in 1914 in Portland, Oregon. When they died a few years later, the mansion remained in the family until it was decided that it would be sold in 1958. When a storm hit in 1962, it caused a lot of damage to the mansion. Developers wanted to demolish the place, but the community stepped in to pay for it and turn it into the historic site it is today. Some say Henry's and Georgiana's spirits still linger. Yes, a few actual murders happened in this house, and they're technically still unsolved to this day. In case you're unaware, Andrew Borden and his second wife Abby were murdered with an axe in their Fall River, Massachusetts home in 1892. One of their daughters, Lizzie , was tried for and acquitted of the gruesome murders, but many still believe she committed the crimes. Now, people say Andrew, Abby, and Lizzie all haunt the house. Eastern State Penitentiary

Once home to many criminals including Al Capone, Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia used to be the most famous and expensive prison in the world. Halloween isn't cancelled yet. Across the U.S., we've seen haunted houses adapt to the times with drive-in events and socially-distanced fun. But if you're staying inside this October 31st, you can still have a spooky good time. Haunted places throughout the country, including the Winchester Mystery House and Eastern State Penitentiary, offer virtual tours. If you're feeling gutsy and won't get spooked by a few apparitions—though we can't guarantee you'll see 'em—we suggest checking out these cool virtual ghost tours right from your couch. 1.  winchester mystery house.

Sarah Winchester spent 38 years intricately remodeling her home into the sprawling 24,000 square-foot mansion . There was seemingly no architectural rhyme or reason to the property's design—there are unfinished staircases, misplaced windows, a door that leads nowhere. However, it's believed that this labyrinth-like layout intended to confuse the spirits of those killed by the Winchester Repeating Arms' guns (the company Sarah inherited from her husband's family). Finding your way out of this confusing attraction might be more challenging than finding spirits.

2.  Pittock Mansion

Henry and Georginia Pittock, who made their fortune in the newspaper industry, had plans to retire and revel in Portland's panoramic views. They began construction on an impresive French Renaissance-style château, which was completed in 1914. However, they only lived there for four years until they passed away. Relatives inherited the home, which was later abandoned and eventually damaged in the Columbus Day Storm in 1962. But residents fought to keep the property open after the destruction, and two years later, the Pittock Mansion relaunched as a museum. Some say the Pittocks are still there—after all, they truly didn't have too much time to enjoy the grounds. Don't be alarmed though: Visitors claim to see apparitions of the husband and wife duo, but they are supposedly friendly spirits. Well, that's … reassuring. 

3.  Eastern State Penitentiary

The world's first penitentiary—and most expensive, at one time—housed dangerous criminals like Al Capone, Leo Callahan and Freda Frost. Now, the menacing gothic structure is empty, though many claim there is still plenty lurking in the abandoned cellblocks. 

4.  Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast Museum

The quaint Victorian home in New England seems innocent enough, but its history is far from rosy. Back in 1892, a young woman named Lizzie Borden was accused of murdering her father and stepmom with an axe, though she was never proven guilty. If you're brave enough, you can even crash here overnight.

5.  The Queen Mary

Not all of this famed ship's passengers had a comforting experience. Just take it from the Lady in White and the man who was believed to have met his fate in the Queen Mary's boiler room, who are said to haunt the vessel to this day. Halloween is going virtual this year and while most are bummed out over the thought of no (stranger-given) candy, others are down about one other aspect of the spooky holiday: Haunted houses .

With social distancing measures still in place, there's no denying how disappointing it is to know that no one will be getting the bejeezus scared out of them all in the name of good fun. Some places have instituted the use of drive-thru haunted houses but it's just not the same when your 'fear' is being carried by your own two legs through an elaborately-set up display. So while the actors might be putting their masks and FX makeup on the back burner for now, some of the world's most haunted locations are seeking a new alternative for those looking to be spooked.

Virtual tours have gained plenty of popularity over the last few months with everything going on and now, 'visitors' have the chance to explore these places, free of charge, without even leaving their own homes. So turn down the lights, play some eerie, spooky music, and prepare to tour one of these famously haunted destinations.

Bran Castle

The home of the fictional Dracula himself, Bran Castle is now available to be toured online. Deep in the mountains of Romania, Bran Castle was said to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula and while tours are ongoing in-person, those of us who can't hop a plane to Europe are happy to tour this eerie castle via our computers.

The virtual tour is thanks to Google maps, which allows users to get up close and personal with every historical stone and archway. For those feeling uber inspired by the sight, feel free to add  Dracula  to the 'must-list' books to reach during the fall season.

The Lizzie Borden House

Lizzie Borden's home is said to be haunted by not only her but her entire immediate family - whom she murdered in a gruesome way (we've all heard the rhyme). In the same place where she laid an ax to her parents, visitors are drawn from all over to observe and even spend the night at what was once a crime scene. The house itself is located in Fall River, Massachusetts, and is open for in-person tours, however, some might just opt to take the online tour that's available on the house's website.

It's also a museum now and 'visitors' will have the chance to learn about the history of both Lizzie Borden and the heinous crime that occurred, for no known reason, which gave the house such an infamous and dark history. Also available on the website is a tour of the cemetery where Borden's parents are buried, as well as floor plans of each part of the actual house.

Salem Witch Museum

The Salem Witch Trials are by far one of the most infamous and well-known parts of Massachusetts history, and Salem is a town devoted to keeping the memory of its dark past alive. While the town is incredible to explore in-person (and also the setting for many a movie inspired by the Witch Trials), those wanting to learn a bit more about Salem's history can do so easily by taking an online tour of one of its most prominent museums.

The site also brings people to a home page with additional tours throughout all of Salem and some nearby towns that also carry a historical significance. A total of 25 people lost their lives due to the paranoid sparked in 1692, and several different tours can be found on the site, all revolving around the trials themselves, those involved, and its significant locations.

The Stanley Hotel

Made most famous thanks to Stephen King and his novel  The Shining  (as well as the movie), the Stanley Hotel has long-since been rumored to be incredibly haunted. Located in Estes Park, the hotel was already conducting its own haunted tours prior to social-distancing laws but this year, they've done things a bit differently. The most notorious room, room 217, is said to be the most haunted of the entire hotel. This room, as well as the surrounding hotel and its hotspot areas, area available for virtual tours via YouTube.

The Queen Mary

The Queen Mary has been featured prominently on many ghost hunting shows and for good reason: Its haunting seems to know no limits when it comes to the activity people experience while onboard. For those who want a general overview and not-so-spooky tour of the ship, Google maps offers a decent look-around in terms of virtual tours. However, for those looking to get into the nitty-gritty of the ship's hauntings, head over to the Queen Mary's YouTube page in order to have a full Halloween-themed tour of the ship.

The Willard Library

Visitors and librarians alike have claimed to see the Grey Lady ghost, an apparition of a veiled woman who is said to roam the Willard library. Many believe it is the ghost of Anne Carpenter (above) daughter of the library's founder Willard Carpenter. In addition to spotting the ghost, other experiences include water turning on or off; the smell of perfume; books and furniture moving around; and the feeling of being touched on hair or earrings. NEW YORK CITY (SBG) — Halloween is meant to be a spooky holiday, but the very scary possibility of catching COVID-19 is probably not what you have in mind for your celebrations this October. While the tradition of trick-or-treating has received a tentative green light in plenty of places and socially distant events can allow you to experience some of the magic in-person, the pandemic has given rise to online happenings that can be enjoyed from the comfort of your own home, like virtual parties, virtual costume contests, and even virtual haunted houses.

But although taking a walk through a digitized haunted house will leave you feeling safe from coronavirus, you may not feel entirely safe from the spirits that you'll encounter along the way. Don't be surprised if you find yourself having trouble sleeping after taking one of these terrifying tours.

1. Shocktober

For the past decade, Shocktober has transformed a mansion from the 19th century into four floors of terror for those brave enough to walk through its haunted doors. Carlheim Manor, located in Leesburg, Va. and sometimes referred to as Paxton Manor, has long attracted the attention of paranormal investigators with stories of supernatural activity, making it the ideal location for a Halloween attraction. Due to the pandemic, Shocktober decided to turn the annual event into a virtual experience for its 10th anniversary. Visitors can purchase a ticket to one of four global watch parties, and at the time of the watch party, they'll be able to tune into a live two-hour episode that takes them on a scream-worthy journey through the manor.

2. Winchester Mystery House

In 1886, construction began on the personal residence for the widow of firearm magnate William Wirt Winchester. As Sarah Winchester hired carpenters to renovate the unfinished California farmhouse, rumors began to spread that the widow had fled to the state at the suggestion of a psychic and that the building was haunted by the ghosts of those killed with Winchester rifles. For as long as she lived, Mrs. Winchester continued to make peculiar additions to the mansion, its interior becoming labyrinth-like in structure; this continuous construction during Mrs. Winchester's lifetime is commonly said to have been her attempt to ward off spirits.

With its bizarre backstory and its unusual architecture, the Winchester Mystery House became a top destination for paranormal tours after Mrs. Winchester's death in 1922. But this past spring, the haunted estate temporarily closed its doors at the guidance of the CDC and launched an immersive 360-degree virtual tour . While the Winchester Mystery House has reopened to visitors, the virtual tour remains an option for those looking to discover the mansion's oddities without traveling all the way to the California property.

3. Bran Castle

Though Bram Stoker, the author of "Dracula," never actually visited Romania, Bran Castle has gained a reputation in the country and beyond as being "Dracula's Castle." The connection of the Transylvanian castle to the Gothic horror novel has been a major draw for tourists to visit Romania, particularly during the Halloween season, but the pandemic has dramatically reduced the number of people heading to Bran Castle for the October holiday this year. For those who aren't able to tour the castle in person, video tours are available for free online, and you can even walk through the interior at your own pace on Google Maps. Make sure that you have some garlic on hand before you step inside.

4. Frightbytes

Virtual haunted houses may sound like a modern concept, but the Frightbytes website has been around for years before the pandemic, and its design will have you nostalgic for the early days of the internet. The website offers a number of interactive choose-your-own-adventure stories; some will transport you to a haunted inn, while others will take you to a carnival of terror. In addition to the archive of past stories, there's a brand new story for Halloween this year that guides you through a spooky dreamworld full of unnatural creatures and faceless figures.

5. Bangor Opera House

Several spirits have been spotted at Bangor Opera House, including the ghost of a firefighter who died when the theater that formerly sat on the site of the current building went up in flames in 1914. Now, you can take a virtual tour of the haunted theater by booking an experience on Airbnb with "haunt enthusiast" and actor Ben Layman. The Zoom event starts with a séance, and then you'll travel through the theater in pursuit of ghosts. Layman will allow you to decide which route to take throughout the opera house.

By downloading a ghost box app on your phone prior to the experience, you'll likely be able to feel the presence of spirits in the opera house during the tour, even if you're far from Bangor. Skeptical? Check out the reviews on Airbnb, which emphasize just how eerie this ghost hunt can get. "I was so spooked that it truly felt like I was in the theatre with them," wrote one satisfied participant.

6. Nightmare Vermont

Since 2004, Nightmare Vermont has been putting on an all-volunteer Halloween event with the goal of raising money for several local charities. Upon hearing that many haunted houses in the area were called off this year, the team behind the Vermont event was even more determined to provide a safe alternative to their usual in-person production for the community. Buying a ticket to this year's iteration will grant you access to a livestream that promises bloodthirsty goblins and treacherous magic. There is plenty of audience participation to be had during this event; live polls will dictate character choices, and audience members will band together to solve puzzles throughout the course of the evening.

7. Pleasanton Ghost Walk

Rumor has it that many of the buildings along Main Street in Pleasanton, Calif. are inhabited by ghosts. The ghosts are thought to date back to a time when the town was known as "The Most Desperate Town in the West" and had a reputation for being filled with bandits and brothels. 9. See the Notorious Eastern State Penitentiary

The Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was once “the most well-known and expensive prison in the world.” This gothic building was home to some of America’s most well-known criminals, including Al Capone and “Slick Willie” Sutton.

In an interview, Stephen King said that he and Tabitha checked into a nearly-empty hotel as the season was winding down. The hotel’s long, empty corridors and the room’s claw-foot tub sparked King’s imagination for a book he had been working on. As a result, he decided to set the story in “The Overlook Hotel,” a fictional spot based on this hotel.

In 1892 Massachusetts, Lizzie Borden was tried and acquitted for the axe murders of her father and stepmother. Despite the acquittal, she was ostracized in her community. If you’ve got a taste for the morbid, then The College of Physicians of Pennsylvania’s Mütter Museum in Philadelphia is a must-see. On April 26th, 1986 near the Ukrainian city of Pripyat, a nuclear accident occurred at the No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. During a planned safety test, unstable conditions resulted in an uncontrolled nuclear reaction. A large amount of energy was abruptly released alongside an explosion, and for a period of 9 days, radioactive contamination flooded the area. In an effort to manage casualties, upwards of 100,000 people were evacuated from a 19-mile exclusion zone.

This event is regarded as the worst nuclear disaster in history. Though only 2 people died in the initial explosion, roughly 40 members of station staff and emergency responders passed away from radiation-related complications within the next decade. Cancer rates were shown to have increased in the nearby population as well.

Pennhurst Asylum

In Spring City, Pennsylvania sits what remains of Pennhurst Asylum , a building that formerly housed the mentally and physically disabled residents of the region. The asylum began taking in patients in 1908. Behind its doors, however, tragedy ensued. For 79 years, many Pennhurst patients suffered neglect, abuse, and brutalization. The site was finally shuttered in 1987. It’s said that to this day severe paranormal activity lingers in the halls.

Catacombs of Paris

In the late 18th century, Paris’s cemeteries were tied to rampant health problems. As a result, the city made a decision to relocate the dead to an underground location—the labyrinthine Tombe-Issoire quarries beneath the plain of Montrouge. From 1785 to 1860, the bones from graves, tombs, and charnel houses were moved to the catacombs. Public viewings began as early as 1809.

During the Civil War, Union forces used Fort Delaware as a prison for captured Southern foes. Preston Castle

Preston Castle is an old reform school located in Ione, California, notable for housing such wayward boys as country singer Merle Haggard and bank robber Joseph Paul Cretzer. This juvenile correctional facility was run in a military fashion, with wards splitting their time between school and a practical trade to focus on upon release. The castle was closed in the 1960s, where it sat abandoned for 40 years. It’s long been said that this landmark is haunted—by the ghost of its deceased wards, as well as the spirit of Anna Corbin, a housekeeper who was beaten to death in the ‘50s.

Inside the extreme haunted house where you’re ‘tortured and have your teeth pulled’

‘It’s basically human torture and cruelty. How is this even legal?’

Not exactly the review most people want on Google. But for Russ McKamey, this is just the kind of publicity he’s after.

Russ is behind McKamey Manor , a haunted house tour that isn’t full of the usual cardboard ghosts or actors in werewolf costumes bought around the corner.

No, people sign 40-page waivers to be buried alive, submerged in cold water and beaten across the roughly 10-hour-long experience.

What is McKamey Manor?

‘This is an audience participation event in which (YOU) will live your own horror movie,’ the manor’s warning page (yes, a warning page) on its website says.

The tourist attraction first came to public light in 2014, when it allegedly had 20,000 people on the waiting list. It sees actors doing… a lot to the contestants while Russ taunts them behind a camera.

McKamey Manor is so infamous that an online petition to shut down this ‘torture chamber’ has nearly 200,000 signatures.

‘It is seriously just torture porn,’ the petition says, alleging that one participant was ‘tortured so badly he passed out multiple times’.

‘Workers only stopped because they thought they had killed him.’

Some haunted house industry experts (yes, that’s a thing) aren’t the biggest fans of McKamey Manor either, stressing it’s very much not a haunted house.

What happens inside?

‘I was waterboarded, I was Tased, I was whipped. I still have scars of everything they did to me. I was repeatedly hit in my face, over and over and over again. Like, open-handed, as hard as a man could hit a woman in her face.’

This is what one participant, Laura Hertz Brotherton, says she went through in 2016.

One 2013 promotional video shows manor-goers eating cockroaches and begging to be released from contractions straight out of Saw. Others have described swimming through mud and taking a dip in a tank of moray eels.

Going through McKamey Manor is different every time, with Russ tailoring it to each contestant’s fears.

Despite what the fake-blood-soaked promos make the manor out to be, Russ has stressed it isn’t as bad as it seems.

He told the Nashville Scene in 2018: ‘Nobody’s ever been injured, ever. Nobody’s ever had any lawsuits, ever. I mean, there was a heart attack once but that person’s okay now.

‘People can get bumps, bruises, sprains and cuts. But you can die at Disneyland, too.’

How can I go to McKamey Manor?

Adrenaline junkies hoping to get through the door have to go through a complicated screening process. For one, you have to be at least 21 – or 18-20 with approval from a parent or guardian.

You also cannot be pregnant, claustrophobic or medically unfit. As in, they suffer from a heart condition or epilepsy.

First, there’s the physical exam, then the background check and a screening over the phone or Facebook. It would help if you had a doctor’s note saying you’re fit and healthy and, unsurprisingly, have health insurance.

If someone is still game, they’re made to watch a two-hour video of past participants recounting their experiences. (Russ has said he films every visit as proof of what did and did not happen.)

And then there’s the waiver.

What’s this I’ve heard about a 40-page waiver?

An alleged version of the document was leaked online four years ago.

Some of the possible injuries the waiver lists that ‘may occur’ include: ‘Neck, and back injuries, death, stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain aneurysms, cerebral or retinal haemorrhage, subdural hematoma, loss of consciousness, whiplash, harmful heart reactions, nausea, headache, dizziness, lacerations, broken or sprained bones, torn ligaments, bleeding wounds, scrapes and/or cuts, heatstroke, or drowning.’

What does the waiver say?

Here’s just a small selection of what the waiver asks participants to ‘agree’ to:

• Tooth-pulling
• Carbon monoxide poisoning
• Dislocated joints
• Mind-control tactics
• ‘Water torture’
• Extremities being ‘crushed’
• Hypothermia
• Being shaved bald
• Buried alive for 12 hours
• ‘Coming down with a disease later in life’
• Having your hand smashed with a hammer
• Having a nail ‘pierce’ your hand
• Being in an enclosed space with live bugs
• Ingesting said live bugs
• Consenting to feel like you ‘may die’
• And being able to say what their ‘final straw, their line in the sand’ is.

It says people are not ‘actually’ being harmed, just ‘roughed up’ at best, and aren’t being ‘held against their will’.

‘Participant agrees and understands that your life in reality is not in danger and this is just a game,’ it says, before adding: ‘Everything else imaginable can and will happen inside of MM. You are aware of this and are giving full permission for any action that may happen inside of MM.’

People can tap out at any time with a safe word.

No matter what, however, the contract is clear. Participants must haul all the ‘equipment and materials back to the van’ after the experience. Just what you need to do after hours of absolute terror.

Has anyone finished the McKamey Manor challenge?

Russ has for years offered a 20,000-dollar prize, or about £16,000, to anyone who completes the challenge.

To this day, according to Russ, no one has ever come close.

‘And they never will!’ he told the Nashville Scene . ‘Because it’s so mentally and physically challenging. But it will be the most exciting thing you’ve ever done.’

Is any of this… legal?

Legal experts aren’t quite sure what to make of it, especially the waiver.

Some have said it relies on the signatories ‘consenting’ to what the manor throws at them – as long as it’s not criminal. Tennessee District Attorney Brent Cooper previously said ‘torture’ is technically legal between two consenting adults, but both have the power to revoke their consent at any time.

Others are blunter , calling it an ”insane, legally questionable waiver (which consistently uses the word “libel” for “liable”)’.

On Halloween last year, Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti  sent a letter to Russ  voicing his concerns about his ‘business practices’.

The state’s attorney general’s office launched an investigation into the attraction following the release of a Hulu documentary, Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House.

‘Former participants describe the adrenaline and pressure they felt when reviewing the waiver at the start of the tour,’ the state’s letter reads.

‘One interviewee on the Hulu documentary said they had “too much excitement going through my veins at the time,” and if the waiver would have said that, “a man is going to come out of the woods and murder you during this event, I would’ve have signed it”.’

R uss filed a lawsuit against the attorney general’s office in March , arguing that Skrmetti’s investigation is a ‘concerted effort to prevent [him] from engaging in lawful conduct on his private property’.

Where is McKamey Manor?

The first manor was on Russ’ property in San Diego before he moved to Summertown, Tennessee in 2015. Within weeks of setting up shop there, local police received multiple calls from residents about seeing seemingly bloodied people being dragged about – with one mistaking the attraction as a possible hostage situation.

A second location in Huntsville, Alabama, is where a mysterious second property is said to be for those who survive Smalltown.

Thrill-seekers can swing by for its one weekly ‘show’, though it hasn’t updated its hours since last year.

How long the show lasts ‘depends on how well the guest does’, according to the manor’s website.

It also depends if, amid all of this fear and trembling, you use any ‘foul language’. Yes, McKamey Manor has a zero-tolerance policy on swearing – certainly the last thing you’d want to do while being screamed at.

Why would people put themselves through McKameny Manor?

Now that’s the $20,000 question.

This was something Andrew Renzi, the filmmaker behind the McKamey Manor documentary, was especially keen to answer.

But when he spoke to contestants who included a veteran shaken by his time in Afghanistan, a queer woman told she’d burn for her sins and an anxiety-riddled orphan, the answer surprised him.

‘These were all people that were just trying to heal from their past traumas and wanted to push themselves to such extremes as a way to grow and conquer those fears that had consumed them for so much of their lives,’ he told The Hollywood Reporter .

‘I found this so relatable. We’re all trying to move on from the scars of our pasts and we’re not always presented with easy solutions to do that.

‘I really connected with the “why” when I heard these stories, and no longer looked at them as outsiders at all, just people that maybe felt like they were out of options.’

[ Ed. note: This story contains spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2 episodes 3 and 4.]

House of the Dragon is no stranger to the supernatural. Not only does the HBO fantasy drama series boast plenty of low-key magic — not to mention, y’know, dragons — but it’s also the prequel to Game of Thrones , a show loaded with snow zombies and smoke monster babies. Clearly, this is a universe where otherworldly forces are at play. Even so, Daemon Targaryen’s (Matt Smith) unsettling stopover at Harrenhal in season 2 arguably marks House of the Dragon ’s most overtly supernatural subplot to date.

Everyone’s favorite sassy sadboy prince sets up shop at the supposedly cursed castle in episode 3, and strange goings-on start stacking up soon after. By the time the credits roll on episode 4, “A Dance with Dragons,” Daemon’s contended with bizarre visions, inexplicably rattling doors, and ominous premonitions. It certainly seems like he’s caught up in Westeros’ answer to Ghost Hunters , but is he (and everyone else) just jumping at shadows? Just how cursed is House of the Dragon ’s Harrenhal, really?

Why does everyone think Harrenhal is cursed?

One of the few things Westeros’ high- and lowborn folk seemingly agree on is that there’s been a curse upon Harrenhal since its foundations were laid. Why? George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books , House of the Dragon , and Game of Thrones chalk up Harrenhal’s dubious reputation to two main factors.

The first is the Olympic-level arrogance of Harrenhal’s founder, King Harren Hoare, in the lead-up to the castle’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. Harren made a big deal of how invincible his generations-in-the-making fortress was going to be — and, on paper, his boasting made sense. Harrenhal is almost comically supersized, and its battlements (allegedly made from mortar mixed with Harren’s blood) can theoretically shrug off any conventional attack.

The bad news for ol’ Harren was that dragons are decidedly unconventional. King Aegon I Targaryen and his sisters swooped into Westeros literally the day Harren moved into Harrenhal and promptly torched the joint. The Targaryens’ dragons barbequed Harren and his sons during the assault, and Harrenhal itself was never the same again. Unsurprisingly, rumors that Harrenhal was cursed, haunted, or both sprung up soon after.

The second factor contributing to Harrenhal’s shady rep is that almost everyone who succeeded Harren as lord of the castle didn’t fare much better. We saw some of this misfortune in Game of Thrones ’ eight-season run: Tywin Lannister, Janos Slynt, and Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish wind up shot dead on the toilet, exiled and then beheaded, and Pez dispenser-ed, respectively. House of the Dragon season 1 adds Lyonel Strong and his boy Harwin to the Harrenhal curse’s supposed victims as well.

Frankly, it’s hard to blame folks for believing the place is jinxed!

What happens at Harrenhal in the Game of Thrones books?

Both the core A Song of Ice and Fire novels and House of the Dragon ’s source text, Fire & Blood , stop short of showing any outright paranormal activity at Harrenhal. Sure, we hear legends of the fortress’s various horrors, such as the flaming phantoms of Harren and his kids, a child-eating ghoul named Mad Lady Lothston, rafters full of raven spirits, and household staff crumbling to ashes in their sleep. We never actually see any of this stuff, though.

At one point, Littlefinger complains about Harrenhal’s ghostly lodgers; however, this is probably just the ex-Master of Coin’s signature snark. Similarly, while various characters (including Jaime Lannister and Arya Stark) acknowledge that apparitions of Harren and his sons supposedly roam the castle’s corridors, nobody actually witnesses this phenomenon firsthand. What’s more, Westerosi rumblings that Harren’s ghost bumped off a pair of Lannister-affiliated lowlifes in A Clash of Kings are flat-out wrong; Arya’s mentor, Jaqen H’ghar, is the one actually responsible. There’s a similarly prosaic explanation for the eerie shrieks that emanate from Harrenhal’s aptly named Wailing Tower: It’s just wind blowing through cracks in the walls.

Even so, Fire & Blood also details other, less easily hand-waved supernatural chicanery on Harrenhal’s grounds. Notably, the castle’s Heart Tree not only has a scary-looking face, but also “bleeds” from dragon claw marks in its trunk every spring. Admittedly, Heart Trees are a whole separate branch (pun fully intended) of magic in A Song of Ice and Fire lore, and don’t necessarily fall under the curse umbrella. Yet this definitely fits the definition of “spooky” — and arguably confirms there’s something fouler afoot at Harrenhal.

So, is Harrenhal really cursed? Or is that just Westerosi superstition?

Honestly? No one knows for sure. Ambiguity is a key part of Martin’s take on magic, the supernatural, and religion in A Song of Ice and Fire. As such, the specifics around all three — including curses, real or imagined — is intentionally fuzzy. Harrenhal could be haunted by a malevolent force out to destroy Daemon, but don’t hold your breath expecting House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal to say for sure.

Certainly, nothing in episode 3 or 4 categorically confirms or rules out Harrenhal’s curse. Yes, Daemon sees his bedchamber door shaken by unseen forces; however, Harrenhal is drafty as fuck. Our guy’s (admittedly messed-up) visions of younger Rhaenyra and himself with an eye-patch aren’t exactly reason to call an exorcist, either. For one thing, Rhaenyra’s still alive (so this ain’t a ghost), and for another, season 2 is littered with clues Daemon is losing his grip. It’s the classic “Is this all in his head?” trope.

What about Alys Rivers’ (Gayle Rankin) prophetic claim that Daemon will die at Harrenhal? Even if she’s right ( Fire & Blood readers already know; TV-only fans will have to wait and see), that doesn’t automatically mean Alys is tapping into some unseen power within the castle’s walls. Daemon has a massive target on his back — you don’t need to be a witch (as Alys is rumored to be in the book) to have a shot at accurately predicting his death. Again, it’s a bit murky.

But even though Harrenhal’s curse remains up for debate in House of the Dragon season 2, one thing’s clear: Haunted or not, the castle is Westeros’ least desirable vacation spot.

The second joint Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights haunted house ain't afraid of no ghosts!

Today  Universal Studios Orlando  and  Universal Studios Hollywood  announced their second shared haunted house for the coming Halloween Horror Nights 2024 season - Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire !

Inspired by Sony Pictures’ latest installment in the Ghostbusters franchise (which turns 40-years-old this year), the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire haunted house will be another of the major haunts happening in both parks. It joins the A Quiet Place haunted house inspired by the first two films in the Paramount monster franchise. The haunts are open for business starting Friday, August 30 at Universal Orlando Resort, and Thursday, September 5 at Universal Studios Hollywood.

What's the story behind  Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire ?

The second film in the contemporary continuation of the Ghostbusters mythology,  Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was co-written by Jason Reitman, the son of legendary director Ivan Reitman. Released in March of this year, the sequel moved the action back to New York City and the iconic firehouse where the original Ghostbusters set up shop bagging ghosts in 1985. In fact, the original cast of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts, William Atherton and  Ernie Hudson  — who recently starred in the  Quantum Leap reboot — all returned to their roles to help the family of now deceased Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis). 

What should  Ghostbusters  fans expect from the HHN 2024 haunted house?

This will only be the second official Ghostbusters haunted house experience for Halloween Horror Nights. In 2019, in conjunction with the franchise's 35th birthday, both theme parks welcomed a classic Ghostbusters themed haunted house. 

For this brand-new  Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire haunted house ,  the park description revealed that the house would once more be New York City centric.

"With the daunting discovery of an old relic that has set free the vengeful spirit of Garraka, who threatens to freeze everyone to death, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their city and save the world from a second Ice Age," a description of the haunted house reads.

Guests who bravely enter the firehouse will encounter Ray’s Occult Books shop, the Ghostbuster’s new high-tech lab, the containment facility and then wade into the New York City sewer system. Iconic ghosts who slime will appear as well as nefarious villains out for revenge. And expect literal chills as guests navigate their way through freezing and frightening conditions.

The Ghostbusters-themed haunted houses promise iconic ghosts out to slime mere mortals, plus additional creatures and characters from the beloved classic series.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood will run select nights through Sunday, November 3. Guests will encounter eight all-new haunted houses, an onslaught of sinister scare zones and the iconic Terror Tram.

A variety of Halloween Horror Nights ticket options are available for purchase to the Universal Studios Hollywood event, including General Admission, Universal Express, After 2 P.M. Day/Night, the Early Access Ticket, which provides access to select haunted houses beginning at 5:30 p.m. (subject to change), in advance of the scheduled 7 p.m. event opening time, the premium R.I.P. Tour and popular passes, Frequent Fear and Ultimate Fear, which enable guests to experience the scares again and again.

There are also Halloween Horror Nights Vacation Packages available for Universal Studios Hollywood.

Guests can also stay, scream and save up to $200 (based on a seven-night stay) with a special vacation package that includes one-night admission to the event, admission to all three Universal Orlando theme parks and accommodations at a Universal hotel with exclusive benefits, including access to a dedicated Halloween Horror Nights gate for faster entry into the event, Early Park Admission to the theme parks during the day, and more.

Tickets for Universal Orlando’s Premium Scream Night on Thursday, August 29, are also now available. This unprecedented, one-night event will give a limited number of fans the opportunity to experience this year’s haunts before the event officially opens on Friday, August 30, including access to all 10 haunted houses, five scare zones and live entertainment. Premium Scream Night guests will also enjoy shorter wait times and staggered entry by group to the haunted houses, select all-you-care-to-enjoy food and non-alcoholic beverages, a souvenir credential, access to select attractions at Universal Studios Florida and free self-parking after 5 p.m. Only a limited number of tickets are available.
