Baltimore is no stranger to heartbreak and tragedy, as contagious plagues and disasters have ravaged the town’s history. The spirits that succumbed to these painful deaths have remained close to home, attempting to cling to the life they lost.

Baltimore Ghosts is the ultimate thrilling experience that casts the city’s tourism into a much darker light and creates unforgettable memories at the most historic and haunted locations.

Max’s Taphouse

As a rowdy seaport town, local pubs once held a special place in the city’s culture. Max’s Taphouse, in the harbor-side neighborhood of Fell’s Point, dates back to the city’s early days when it operated as a slaughterhouse and brothel. Aside from an impressive beer selection, Max’s is a must-see for the old building’s otherworldly stories, fables, and haunted history.

The Horse You Came In On Saloon

The Horse You Came In On Saloon, established in 1775, is the oldest continually operating bar in the United States. As if that title isn’t impressive enough, it’s also the only bar in Maryland to have survived Prohibition. The building can tell a tale or two, just like the famed American gothic writer Edgar Allen Poe, who is said to have stopped her before succumbing to a mysterious death.

As another Fell’s Point institution, Rye brings Baltimore’s history to light with its innovative craft cocktail menu. The Prohibition-era drinks and repurposed industrial decor take Rye’s visitors back to when Baltimore got its name as “Charm City.” Its reputation gained from nautical misadventures makes it the perfect spot to hear a local ghost story or two.

Test your bravery, and join us!

What to expect on your baltimore ghost tour.

Baltimore’s rich history and beautiful neighborhoods came with a price. Unearth where soldiers from both sides fell in the gruesome battle of 1812. Many of these vengeful spirits still reside in the narrow houses, inns, and everyday structures that line the cobblestone streets. Traces of the sacrifices that were made remain in this haunted city.

Stand in the gaze of Edgar Allen Poe’s ghost as you walk through one of the oldest ports in the country. The gothic author’s mysterious death still haunts the streets of Baltimore to this day. Whether you believe he was murdered or not, his tragic life resulted in his spirit still being bound to this world. Baltimore’s Fells Point boasts a wealth of grim tales and hauntings that have built up over hundreds of years of riotous history.

Join Baltimore Ghosts to hear all the gruesome details, the human heartbreak, and the haunting spirits of Fells Point. We will take you on a journey to discover the famous and infamous ghosts whose stories shaped the nation.

River House - Snow Hill, MD

Snow Hill Ghost Walk

Haunted mansion and haunted inns along a haunted river.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Snow Hill is just 30 minutes from Ocean City, Salisbury and Chincoteague.  It’s one of the most historically in tact towns on the Eastern Shore with beautiful architecture and interesting haunts. Set on the mystical Pocomoke River and bordered by its haunted forest, Snow Hill has a special energy.

Enjoy a nighttime walk around one of the Eastern Shore’s most haunted towns.  Snow Hill, Maryland in Worcester County is known for its haunted Snow Hill Inn on Market Street, that is said to be haunted by the ghost of William Aydelotte, a pharmacology student who committed suicide in 1904 by slitting his own throat …. twice.

The Snow Hill Inn isn’t the only property with spirits.  Former owners of the  Governor’s Mansion on Church Street reported that Governor John Walter Smith appeared to their children soon after they moved in.  The town hall has a ghost that occupies one of the 2nd-floor rooms.  Mapleton has been known to have the voices of children coming from the old gardens and the River House may have a child or two as well.

The houses on Federal and Church Streets are some of the most beautiful Victorians on the Eastern Shore.  Hear stories about several of those properties.  Also hear tales about tragedies and mysteries in the Pocomoke Forest.

PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT GO INSIDE THE PROPERTIES.  This is a ghost walk where stories of hauntings and unexplained events are shared while standing outside the property.

Hi Mindie, I’m just curious where you got the picture of the Snow Hill Municipal Building with the firemen in front? I’m pretty sure that is my great-grandfather in the driver’s seat of the fire truck and I would love to have a copy! I have a few others but not that particular one. Thank you! 🙂

Hi Lisa. That image was in the book I wrote about Snow Hill back in 2007. I’m sure it either came from the Snow Hill Library collection or from the Julia A. Purnell Museum. I scanned many of the photos I collected from those two sources. It very well may be your grandfather in the driver’s seat.

I just paid for the Snow Hill Ghost Walk on March 15. I was wondering how I get the “tickets”? Are they mailed to me? Will you send me a confirmation email?

In 1830 construction on the Point Lookout Lighthouse was completed and it became a functional lighthouse.

In the years since its construction, the lighthouse has been home to an extraordinary amount of hauntings. A man in Civil War-era clothing is one of the most frequently seen ghosts.

He is said to be in horrible physical shape, smells of gunpowder and mildew, and it is believed he was attempting to free himself from the Smallpox unit that once stood in the area.

9. Antietam Battlefield, Sharpsburg

Antietam Battlefield

The Antietam Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland, is a site that bears the scars of one of the bloodiest battles in American history.

On September 17, 1862, the Confederate Army under General Robert E. Lee clashed with the Union Army led by General George McClellan in a day-long battle that resulted in over 23,000 casualties. This gruesome event, known as the Battle of Antietam, is remembered as the bloodiest single-day battle in the Civil War and in U.S. history.

The battlefield is marked by several significant locations, such as Bloody Lane, the Cornfield, and a stone bridge over Antietam Creek, where some of the most intense fighting took place.

Visitors to the site often report eerie experiences, such as the sensation of being watched, hearing phantom gunshots and drumming, and even seeing apparitions of soldiers. The battlefield, now part of the National Park Service, serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and is considered one of the most haunted places in Maryland.

10. Jonathan Hager House Museum, Hagerstown

Jonathan Hager House Museum

The Jonathan Hager House Museum, also known as “Hager’s Fancy,” is a historic landmark in Hagerstown, Maryland, with a history dating back to the mid-18th century.

The house was built by Jonathan Hager, the German immigrant who founded Hagerstown, and served as a residence, trading post, and frontier fort. Over the years, the house changed hands several times, eventually falling into disrepair before being restored and deeded to the city.

The house, which has been standing for nearly 300 years, is said to be home to at least 13 ghosts. Over the decades, curators and tour guides have reported a variety of paranormal experiences, including disembodied voices, objects moving on their own, and the sound of footsteps and heavy objects being dragged across the stone floor in the cellar.

The nursery is particularly active, with a rocking chair and cradle that move without any human intervention, and temperature fluctuations that have no apparent cause.

Visitors have reported seeing several apparitions, including a little girl who seems to be particularly drawn to women, a lady in green often seen looking out the window or as a flash of green in the hall, and a man in black who has been spotted both around the house and elsewhere in City Park.

The museum is open from April 7 – October on Fridays & Saturdays: 10AM – 4PM. Tours are on the hour, and no appointment necessary. Private tours are available if you call in advance.

slaughter factory

Loud, crashing, rusty gears use to grind and rip the flesh off the bone of animals being slaughtered. Buzz saws pierce the air, as the overwhelming purr of heavy machinery vibrated the very ground you walked on in this sick and twisted factory. Years ago it was a booming business until madness, greed and power infected the owner.

It started with a small accident...an employee slipped and severed a finger that ended up being ground up with the day’s beef product. Instead of shutting down, cleaning and recalling, the money hungry owner shipped out the meat not wanting to waste precious time or profits. And if he would have stopped there, he might have gotten away with it. But it got worse, way worse. Before long, he started slipping further into his derranged darkness realizing he could do just about anything in his factory. Shards of bone, hair and even teeth were found riddled throughout the ground meats.

The owner had gone completely insane, fueled by the thrill of the slaughter. Nothing could quench his thirst for human blood, spilled across the cold, stained, concrete walls and floors. The authorities were contacted but it was too late. Almost all of his staff was slaughtered like livestock one fateful night and displayed like sides of beef hanging on rusty meat hooks stabbed through wrists and ankles.

The authorities called in a SWAT team to capture the maniac but even they couldn't stomach the horrors that were within. The putrid stench of rotting human flesh filled the air. The maze of hanging corpses made navigating the facility almost impossible and the team soon pulled out and sealed the factory. Locals claim to hear a saw running late at night and see a flickering light coming from one of the windows. Is it possible the owner is still around after 30 years living off the corpses of his employees? Find out for yourself as you journey through this stomach churning, and sickening, factory of terror!

Picture Fell’s Point, in Baltimore, Maryland, as it was- a rowdy seaport town. It was the birthplace of the sleek and dangerous clipper ship. Its streets were full of sailors from foreign lands spilling off ships and immigrants anxious to start a new life. There were also more than a few ladies of the night looking to make ends meet. Given this explosive combination, is it any wonder that many ghosts remained behind? Join Baltimore Ghost Tours on a walking tour or haunted pub crawl to explore many haunted sites in Fells Point. But don’t stray too far from the group because you never know when you’ll find yourself face to face with the unknown.

History of Baltimore Ghost Tours

The Original Fells Point GhostWalk is a Certified Authentic Baltimore Tour . We are members of the Baltimore Convention and Visitors Bureau and Fells Point Main Street .

When owners Amy Lynwander and Melissa Rowell set out to research ghost stories of Fell’s Point, they started knocking on doors, talking to residents and bar owners, and combing through documents at libraries. Their findings were revealed during The Original Fell’s Point Ghost Walk Tour in October 2001. A couple of years later The Original Fells Point Haunted Pub Walk debuted.

In July, 2005, they published their first book of Baltimore ghost stories, Baltimore’s Harbor Haunts: True Ghost Stories .

While researching their book, the duo uncovered stories from Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood and began the process all over again to create a new haunted walking tour, the Mount Vernon Ghost Walk Tour , which debuted in September, 2007. In 2016 The Mt Vernon Haunted Pub Crawl made its debut.

The Most Haunted Places in Maryland

Guess what? It’s Halloween season! If you’re looking for something freaky to do, check out these haunted places in Maryland.

haunted house tours md

Officially joining the Union in 1788, Maryland is blessed with an abundance of historic and military sites as well as a rich culture full of art, sports legends, and culinary masterpieces. While that long history has produced legends like Francis Scott Key, Babe Ruth, and Harriet Tubman, it’s also produced unsettled Civil War soldiers, enslaved people who were wronged, and a few other specters who still have a bone to pick. From military cemeteries to sinister state houses, the haunted places in Maryland offer a smorgasbord of spooks to ensure a spine-tingling getaway in the Old Line State!

Exploring the Other Side of Baltimore With Let’s Roam

Our list of haunted places in Maryland is just the beginning. Dive into the murder and mayhem of the Old Line State’s largest city on our Baltimore’s Best Haunts Ghost Tour ! We’ll escort you to all the spooky spots around the city, delving into the sinister histories and sporty spirits that still roam some of the city’s most famous public venues. From Westminster Church Cemetery to Camden Yards, this fun-filled ghost hunt introduces you to a whole new side of Baltimore!

We’ve compiled a list of the most haunted places in Maryland, each with its own unique history and paranormal activity. Whether you’re looking for a dark tourism destination or just want something fun to do this Halloween, add a few of these paranormal pins to your trip map!

1. Antietam Battlefield

  • Location: Sharpsburg, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The Antietam National Battlefield is part of the National Park Service and is open to the public year-round. You can take self-guided tours to learn more about its history and hauntings.

The Antietam Battlefield witnessed the brutal Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War in 1862. It was a battle that left behind more than 23,000 casualties and injuries. It is thought to be the bloodiest battle of the war. It’s no wonder that this historic site is believed to be haunted. Visitors have reported hearing phantom gunfire, seeing apparitions of Civil War soldiers in tattered uniforms, and even feeling sudden drops in temperature. The Dunker Church, a focal point of the battlefield, is a hotspot for paranormal activity, with tales of ghostly figures seen in and around the church.

2. Point Lookout Lighthouse

  • Location: Scotland, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The lighthouse is part of Point Lookout State Park and is accessible to the public during park hours.

Point Lookout Lighthouse, situated at the confluence of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay, has a history riddled with tragedy, making it a very likely place to encounter ghosts. It reportedly served as a POW camp, a lookout during the Revolutionary War, and a hospital during the Civil War. Legend has it that the spirit of a Confederate soldier, known as “The Keeper,” roams the lighthouse. Visitors have reported mysterious footsteps echoing through empty corridors, unexplained noises that send chills down your spine, and even sightings of the ghostly keeper himself. People say he smells of mildew and gunpowder and is quite mangled from a battle injury. Aside from the Confederate soldier, other visitors have reported an elderly woman searching for her grave and a singing lighthouse keeper.

3. Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House

  • Location: Waldorf, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: Also known as St. Catharine’s, this haunted house offers guided tours, but they aren’t technically ghost tours. They generally focus on the history of Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth, but docents are willing to answer any questions on the paranormal aspects of the home, as well.

Dr. Samuel Mudd is infamous for his involvement in treating John Wilkes Booth’s broken leg after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The Mudd House , with its connection to this dark chapter of American history, is said to be haunted by the ghost of Booth himself, who reportedly appears in various forms, including coming back to sleep on the bed where he once convalesced. Visitors have heard whispers in empty rooms, seen apparitions lurking in the shadows, and even experienced objects moving, seemingly on their own.

4. Maryland State House

  • Location: Annapolis, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The Maryland State House is open to the public and offers guided tours.

The Maryland State House, the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use, holds a rich history within its walls. Urban legend states that it’s home to the spirit of Thomas Dence, a plaster worker who tragically fell to his death during the construction of the dome in the 18th century. Witnesses have reported hearing unexplained footsteps echoing in the empty chambers and hallways, and some have claimed to see shadowy figures moving through the historic halls. It’s as if Dence’s spirit still lingers, overseeing the state’s affairs from beyond the grave. Aside from Dence, an unknown spirit haunts the Senate chamber where George Washington resigned his office of the presidency, and some visitors have reported seeing a Revolutionary Soldier in full attire on the grounds, as well.

5. Fletchertown Road

  • Location: Bowie, Maryland

This historic road has a reputation as a hotspot for paranormal activity, including one of Maryland’s favorite ghost stories—the legend of the goat man! This strange satyr-like creature reportedly escaped from the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. Some say he was a sort of mad scientist who performed experiments on himself, resulting in his half-beast transformation. In the 1950s and 1960s, several murders were pinned on the goat-man, who apparently chose an axe as his mode of destruction. It’s said that he viciously murdered travelers on the Fletchertown Road before devouring their corpses. Creepy urban legend or true story? Guess you’ll have to wander down Fletchertown Road for yourself to find out!

6. Jericho Covered Bridge

  • Location: Kingsville, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The bridge is accessible year-round and is a popular spot for photography and ghost enthusiasts.

The Jericho Covered Bridge, spanning over the Little Gunpowder Falls, is a picturesque wooden bridge that dates back to 1865. While on the National Register of Historic Places, it is also known for its eerie reputation. The ghost stories surrounding this bridge are varied and numerous! Some see a woman in 19th-century dress wandering the bridge. Others state that it’s guarded by a monkey-like creature or a red-eyed demon. Some say they see the bodies of enslaved people or soldiers hanging from the bridge’s rafters. Apparently, if you’re of the poltergeist variety, Jericho Bridge is the place to be!

7. St. Paul’s Cemetery

  • Location: Chestertown, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The cemetery is located outside of St. Paul’s Kent Church and is open to visitors.

St. Paul’s Cemetery is a well-kept graveyard dating back to the 1700s. It lies on the grounds of one of the oldest churches on the East Coast and is reportedly one of the most haunted cemeteries in North America. Visitors have reported encountering the apparition of a sorrowful woman in Victorian-era clothing, wandering through the old tombstones, seemingly in search of a lost loved one. Others have witnessed flickering lights, shadowy figures, and inexplicable cold spots. Most visitors report feeling as if someone was stalking them through the cemetery on their visit.

The most spine-chilling account involves a ghostly figure resembling a Civil War soldier, seen standing near the graves of other fallen soldiers, eternally guarding their resting place. Many of the fallen from the Battle of Caulk’s Field, during the War of 1812, are buried there, along with both Union and Confederate Civil War soldiers. Tench Tilghman, a Revolutionary War Officer, is said to patrol the cemetery by lantern light, and if you lie down on the grave of actress Tallulah Bankhead, you can reportedly hear her raspy voice calling out from beyond the grave. Creepy!

8. Hell House

  • Location: Patapsco Valley State Park
  • Visiting Information: The park is open for hiking, picnicking, and exploring.

Patapsco Valley State Park, with its beautiful landscapes and hiking trails, is also home to ghostly tales. The ruins of the old Ilchester Paper Mill and nearby structures have become hotspots for paranormal activity. Visitors have reported hearing disembodied voices, seeing shadowy figures, and feeling a sense of unease as they explore the abandoned buildings. The tragic history of the mill workers and accidents in the area have contributed to the park’s haunted reputation.

One of the most haunted locations in the park is lovingly referred to as Hell House. It was once St. Mary’s College, but the ruins have been taken over by graffiti artists and sinister spirits. Local legends claim that the remnants of the old altar are now used for evil rituals, such as animal sacrifice. A fire set by vandals resulted in the remaining structures being torn down a few years ago, so all that remains now is a haunted pile of rubble.

9. The Admiral Fell Inn

  • Location: Baltimore, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The Admiral Fell Inn operates as a hotel, offering guests a chance to stay in a haunted room.

The Admiral Fell Inn, located in the historic Fell’s Point neighborhood of Baltimore, has gained a reputation as one of Maryland’s most haunted hotels. In the late 1800s, the area was known for being a little rowdy, full of drunk sailors and lively brothels. The Port Mission was opened as a safe haven for fishermen and others seeking a safer night’s rest. It became popular and expanded over the years, taking over neighboring boarding houses. It’s still a popular hotel for the living, but some of the former guests never left.

Current guests claim to have seen floating soldiers in the hallways, a ghostly butler, and apparitions who knock on the doors before disappearing. One hotel manager even claimed she heard strange noises in the hotel, as if there was a massive party raging, but the hotel had been completely evacuated for days due to a hurricane.

10. Baltimore County Almshouse

  • Location: Cockeysville, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The museum is open to the public for visits.

The Baltimore County Almshouse , once a place of refuge for the poor and destitute in the 19th century, also held prisoners for a stint, which has given rise to some awful tales. The almshouse cared for neglected children, the mentally ill, and the elderly, but some of them never left. Ghostly reports from this site include disembodied voices, eerie apparitions, and unexplained footsteps.

A group of women are often heard talking on the third floor. The sound of children playing is often heard in the halls and on the grounds. Children’s faces are also seen in the upper-story windows. Some believe that the restless souls of those who suffered in the almshouse continue to linger, seeking acknowledgment for their pain. The historic place now serves as the home of the Historical Society of Baltimore County. They operate a small museum that displays the history of Baltimore County for all Marylanders to enjoy.

11. Fort McHenry

The ghostly apparitions are believed to be the spirits of soldiers who bravely defended the fort. Perhaps these spirits still stand guard over this historic landmark, forever protecting it from unseen threats.

12. Jonathan Hager House

  • Location: Hagerstown, Maryland
  • Visiting Information: The museum is typically open from April to October and offers guided tours on the hour.

The Jonathan Hager House Museum dates back to 1740 and was home to the founder of the towner. The Hagers hailed from Germany, and their home served as a frontier fort and trading post in the mid-18th century. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and operates as a museum, but that doesn’t stop the poltergeists from hanging around.

The historic home is said to be haunted by two families: The Hammonds lived in the home in the 1840s, and so did the Downins, who resided there during the Civil War. The Downin children like to move a doll around the house. The cameras in the house never seem to work properly. Visitors often hear phantom footsteps, children playing upstairs, and heavy objects being moved about in the cellar. The nursery is a hot spot, and the rocking chair and cradle are often seen rocking on their own. The house may include as many as 13 specters, including a lady in green, a man in black, and a little girl who may be looking for her mom, as she is known to follow and tug at women who visit the museum.

The Lord Baltimore Hotel, an elegant and historic accommodation, is not only known for its luxurious ambiance but also for its ghostly residents. A young girl with a red ball often calls it to the 19th floor. Guests report a presence watching them as they sleep and even tugging at their bedsheets. Hotel staff report encountering the ghosts of a couple who committed suicide in the hotel in 1929 after the stock market crash. They are thought to be the parents of the crying girl with the red ball.

What are the most popular ghost stories in Maryland?

Many Marylanders know the legend of The Goatman or have been spooked by tales of Crybaby Bridge, but there are many popular ghost stories in Maryland :

  • The Blue Dog of Port Tabacco was first reported in the Port Tabacco Times back in 1897. Legend says a soldier and his dog were killed while returning from a tavern. Taking the soldier's gold, the murderer buried it under a nearby holly tree. When he returned to claim the treasure, he was confronted by the ghost of Blue Dog and soon suffered a fatal illness. They say Blue Dog’s ghost watches over the treasure to this day.
  • Ellicott City’s unusual haunting takes place along a harrowing two-lane road. The Demon Truck of Seven Hills Road is said to appear at midnight on the seventh hill, running drivers off the road.
  • Maryland is rich in witchcraft lore, like The Legend of Moll Dyer, depicting the murder of a suspected witch. After the residents of St. Mary's County burned her home, Moll disappeared in the forest and was later found dead, one hand frozen to a rock. The story says that rock still bears the mark of her hand.

Are there any ghost towns in Maryland?

Nothing sends chills down your spine faster than discovering a ghost town, and there are a few ghost towns in Maryland:

  • Harmony Grove was once a mill town until the construction of US 15 demolished its old buildings in the 1960’s. Today all that remains are eerie train tracks, the old mill foundation, crumbling houses and a haunted B&B.
  • Before the 1950’s, Somerset County’s town of Marion was the strawberry capital of the world. When the strawberry industry plummeted, trains no longer stopped at Marion’s station. Remnants of the old train station and a few decaying buildings are all that occupy the town center.
  • Coming across a ghost town with an abandoned cemetery is a horrifying bonus. In the Southwest corner of our state, the isolated town of Kempton boasts just that.

Designing a full-grown dragon hasn’t changed much since the final seasons of Game of Thrones , but pulling off a dance with dragons? A completely different and vastly more complicated story, says the VFX team behind House of the Dragon season 2 .

Sunday night’s fourth episode brought the feud between the Blacks and the Greens to Rook’s Rest for one of the franchise’s most ferocious hours. What the episode lacked in the suffocating scale of Hardhome , showrunner Ryan Condal and director Alan Taylor made up for in big flippin’ dragon action. Aegon, riding Sunfyre, arrives at Rook’s Rest to lay waste to a helpless human army. Rhaenys, on Meleys, swoops in to put a stop to the bloodthirsty boy king. Then Aemond and the elder dragon Vhagar enter the fight to wreak havoc. Dragons fall, riders die, and explosions decimate the surroundings. In painting a picture of the scene to VFX supervisor Dadi Einarsson, Condal likened the effect of Aegon’s dragon crash to a napalm drop and the entirety of the encounter to history’s most gut-wrenching moments.

“The subtext of the scene is: It’s a line in the sand,” Einarsson says. “It’s all been hand-to-hand combat, but this is like they’re experiencing nuclear war for the first time.”

Vhagar rips at Meleys mid air above Rook’s Rest in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 4

Tom Horton, House of the Dragon ’s VFX producer, says the dragon brawl at Rook’s Rest — which at a point becomes 12 minutes of nonstop CGI action — “was the most difficult sequence. It was the one that we finished last.” The process began with considering character; the audience was familiar with the look and feel of Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion from Game of Thrones , and designs carried back in time to the era of House of the Dragon . But season 2 demanded even more consideration of personality and rider dynamic. The dragons had to be “characters in the show, and not just monsters or vehicles,” Einarsson says. “And the [battle] scene amplifies and exaggerates the character traits that Ryan had described to us.”

Through performance and often microscopic animation choices, Einarsson and VFX producer Tom Horton set out to breathe life into their pairs of combatants to raise the stakes of the fight. For Rhaenys and Meleys, the team wanted to strike an “immense kind of foreboding sadness as they go off. They kind of go into battle with dignity. [...] We tried to reflect a bit the character of Meleys through Rhaenys and their relationship, how they kind of interact with each other. It’s kind of a stoic and quiet regal character.”

Sunfyre presented a different challenge for the reality of Westeros, says Horton. Described by George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood historian narrator as one of the most beautiful dragons ever to exist, the team searched the animal kingdom for reference points for animals that were naturally brightly colored or iridescent without looking “fantasy.” The short of it: They spent months looking at frogs. “But the bigger the [reptiles] get, they [tend to] get kind of matted and brown, and bigger and lumpier. The trick was to get something that could scale to dragon size.”

Aegon approaches Sunfyre chained up in the King’s Landing basement in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 4

Then there was Vhagar, the old matriarch, who Condal would say “lived way beyond and shouldn’t be.” Besides her literal wing decaying with age, the team wanted battle-ready Vhagar to feel like a big grump. “The actual physicality of the dragon really does often govern kind of what the dragon ends up doing,” Horton says.

“She’s a cantankerous, angry old thing,” Einarsson adds. “She just wants to go out there and just kill. So when they’re out there and finally she gets to kind of lumber up and fly toward the enormous thing that she is, when Aemond finally tells her ‘dracarys,’ she’s just straight at it and just blows them straight out of the sky. She’s happy to take the life of Meleys.”

To capture scale and impact, Einarsson and the crew were meticulous over every wingbeat. For bigger dragons like Vhagar, viewers should feel the power of a single flap that sends wind blowing across the land as she comes out over the treetops. Smaller dragons like Sunfyre or Jacaerys’ Vermax have snappier movements, allowing them to dart across the sky but make less of an impact on the environment. Horton says that the House of the Dragon team went above and beyond almost any job he’s been a part of in terms of building CG models for the dragons, intricately detailed skeletons and muscles that are “massive to render” and make working with VFX houses around the world, who supply secondary animation on top of the models, a tremendous chore. But it’s worth it: Though lots of physics-based simulation is used to create wing vibrations to create the finished dragon effects, the workflow is set up to allow for an enormous amount of tweaking that no one watching might ever notice.

“I didn’t even think we could tweak that much,” Horton says. “‘This shoulder lifts here, but there’s this bone!’ They’re all talking about how this bone would overlap with the tendons, and they’re getting a little bit too tense too early and… Jesus, the anatomy and the muscularity… We’re really going right down to that level of detail that’s in the model.”

Vhagar snaps the neck of Meleys as Rhaenys watches on Meleys back in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 4

All the big-picture dragon considerations collided for episode 4’s most gasp-worthy moment: When Aemond and Vhagar surprise a seemingly triumphant Rhaenys and Meleys for one more tussle. The elder beast ultimately shreds Meleys to death, and, with no other option, Rhaenys falls with grace.

Horton says the VFX team worked tirelessly with Condal, Taylor, and editor Katie Weiland to finesse the moment of connection between Meleys and Rhaenys that would let the futility of the battle sink in. Early versions of the scene locked the camera on Meleys being attacked by Vhagar, without a more overt cut to Rhaenys. “We rendered that out and we cut that together, and realized, Hey, are we missing something ,” Horton says. “‘We [wanted to] pull the camera back. Then we tried bites at different points and reactions.

“It was really about finding the emotional sweet spot where we see the eye. I think even when we finally nailed it there was one more tweak we had to do. I really wanted the eye to close at that point — we needed that connection. So it was so finely tuned in terms of timing, emotionally, to get the right performance. With actors you do like 12 takes to hit the marks, and we probably did a similar amount but in CGI, backwards and forwards. That’s obviously really complicated because it’s a CGI creature and we’re working with companies in other countries.”

For Einarsson and Horton, the major difference between House of the Dragon seasons 1 and 2 is a leveling up of location shooting. The types of scenes that were previously produced using an LED backdrop on a “volume” stage were more often shot on location in season 2 with constructed sets (and hours spent dragging the crew up mountains). Staging the dragon sequences demanded equal reality — if Sunfyre was going to plummet out of the sky, it absolutely had to feel like a “747-size creature that’s smashed into the ground.”

“From the very beginning, all of the producers and all of the directors, everyone was completely signed on to making an epic season,” Einarsson says. “There was no cutting any corners on that.”
