Journey's end block of the month.
7 comments:
Good morning. Pretty sure I signed up for this class. Can't wait. Love love those little houses!!! And the fabric. Oh boy. Can not wait. Have a beautiful relaxing Christmas Lynn. Love to you and family!!!
I'm sitting here laughing my head off. On a recent trip to Costco, it was very strange to see this yellow, triangular box of Toblerone find it's way into the cart! When asking Mr. Squash how it got in there he said it was only because he was amazed at how neatly they packed nine bars into the box. He's put them in his Jeep, claiming they're emergency provisions LOL. Love the Kim Diehl project! Ms. Harleigh might have found her future vocation. What a wonderful experience! Cheers!
Oh my - those fabrics are to die for! You will have so much fun making that quilt. I had to smile about your Costco run; the Official Cookie Tester is just the opposite of Mr. Joe - I'd never get him to go on a Costco run alone, and adding extras to the list wouldn't even occur to him. :D
FFA is such a wonderful organization for kids - they learn so much! Harleigh is going to be a 'pro' after all of those piglets are born. I know you are all so very proud of her! I laughed out loud about Mr Joe and Costco. He could be my husband's long lost brother :))
The quilt is beautiful and I love the picture of Harleigh and the piggy -- adorable! I was particularly proud that, although Jess scored his 2 points, he is learning an even bigger life lesson: we can't always win but trying makes us a winner anyway!
This block of the month is tempting me! The pattern and the fabric are wonderful, but I think it will be too much expensive the shipping to Italy. I wonder if it's possible to have only the pattern even on Pdf format. I follow your blog and enjoy to see your quilts and the amazing quilting you do on them. Greetings from Italy.
Here it is several years later and I find a picture of Journey’s End Quilt. I absolutely love it and wonder if there is anyway to get just the pattern? Nancy

Celery green thread and an all over leaf pattern give this quilt amazing texture. It is almost like the pattern of the background blocks grew across the quilt.

Journeys Month 12 – Quilt Assembly
Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to Stitchin Heaven’s Journey’s BOM – Month 12! This has been a spectacular year. You all have worked so hard. Thank you to Deb Luttrell, Founder of Stitchin Heaven, Deb Tucker, Creative Kingpin of Studio 180 Design, Marie Bostwick New York Times best selling author and Jason Yenter Fabric Designer & President of In the Beginning Fabrics for making this all possible. Now to assemble your quilts!
Note: WOF stands for width of fabric. This month you will assemble your quilt top and add the borders.
Gather the following pieces:
4 Corner Sections from Month 6
Block K from Month 7
4 Middle Edge Sections from Month 9
4 Pieced Border sections from Month 11
Finishing Instructions
Step 1 – Lay out the Corner Sections, Middle Edge Sections, and Block K as shown in the diagram on page 35.
Step 2 – Stitch the sections together into rows, press the seams open. Stitch the rows together to create the quilt center.
Step 3 – Attach the 72½” Print 11 inner border strips. Find the center of the quilt and the center of the 72½” border strip. Match the center points with right sides together, pin. Match both ends of the strip with the ends of the quilt and pin in place. Ease the quilt top to match the border strip and add more pins between the others to hold the border in place as you stitch. Attach the other 72½” border to the opposite side in the same manner and press toward the inner border strip.
Step 4 – Repeat step 3 for the 75½” Print 11 border strips.
Step 5 – Attach the 75½” Print 6 middle border strips. Using two of the border strips, stitch them to the quilt in the same manner as in step 3. Press toward Print 6.
Step 6 – Stitch a Print 4 middle border corner stone to each end of the remining 2”x 75½” Print 6 borders. Press toward the middle border.
Step 7 – Attach the remining two middle border strips to the quilt as described in step 3. Make sure to nest the seams. Press toward the middle border.
Step 8 – Add the pieced borders. Start with the borders that do not have the N Units on the ends. Orient the pieced borders so that the Corner Pops are against the middle border and the points of the V Blocks are pointing away from the quilt center. Refer to the diagram. Find the center of the quilt top and the center of the pieced border. Match the centers and pin. Match each end and pin. Ease the border to match the quilt top and add more pins between the others to hold the border in place as you stitch. Stitch in place. Press toward the middle border.
Step 9 – Repeat step 8 for the other pieced borders with the N Units attached to the ends. After you have matched the centers and the ends, make sure that you nest the Corner Beam seam with the seam attaching the pieced border.
Note: We recommend that you wait to cut your outer borders to length until you can measure your quilt top. To determine your specific border length, measure the longest side of your quilt in three different places. If those measurements are different, add the three measurements together and divide by three. That will be the length that you need to cut your first two borders. Once the first two borders are attached to the quilt repeat the process for the remaining two sides.
Step 10 – Add the outer borders. Find the center of the quilt and the center of the 90½” outer border strip. Match the center points with right sides together, pin, match either end of the strip with the ends of the quilt, and pin in place. Add more pins between the others, about every 4”, to hold the border in place as you stitch. Attach the other 90½” border to the opposite side in the same manner and press toward the outer border strip.
Step 11 – Repeat step 10 for the 102½” outer border strips.
Step 12 – Finish with Batting, Backing, Quilting, and Binding! Layer quilt top with batting and backing. Baste and quilt. Bind and Enjoy!
Thank you all so much for joining us on this Journey! Congratulations on a job well done!

I wish I had realized you were doing this…It is a beautiful quilt I might have to go back thru your blogs and make one….Stunning…I love it!
All 12 months are there, just search for the month you need.
I can’t find the fabric requirements.
They are in the pattern
Could you give us some written directions about cutting this directional paisley print please? Looks like you did cut not WOF on your outer borders??!! I’ve watched Debs video but still hesitant to cut these borders. 😳😳
Glenda, I’m not at home but Sarah posted a link to the video Deb talks about cutting borders.
Glenda, I just talked to Deb Tucker. She doesn’t consider it a truly directional fabric. She feels it is busy enough and large enough that it will not show up as directional when it is stitched to the quilt.
I’ve enjoyed following this quilt along for several months, it’a beauty. I wish I had participated from the beginning!
Thank you Tammy. These blog posts are not deleted, you can search for them any time.
OM Goodness. How absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you Marlene
Just Beautiful !
Thank you Mary

Carried Away Quilting
Journeys quilt
Last April, my friend Sylvia and I visited a lovely quilt shop in Rogers, Minnesota: Quilted Treasures . We spent a happy hour perusing all of the beautiful bolts, kits and quilts on display. I purchased several individual fat quarters by Art Gallery Fabrics , from a handful of their designers’ past collections. I chose from the heart and purchased an eclectic grouping of colors and prints . . . with absolutely no idea what I might sew with them. That pretty bundle sat patiently in my sewing room for a few months until inspiration struck. As summer gave way to fall, I designed this new quilt, which I’m calling Journeys.
When I’m sewing, I reflect a lot . . . on my quilting journey and on my life journey. Sewing seems to bring about that kind of reflection. Do you find that to be true?
During the autumn, I also seem to be more introspective, pondering the paths I’ve taken and the choices I’ve made. And then of course there’s my age. Being 50-something means I’m in a new season of my life . . . with new journeys ahead.
This Journeys quilt feels very special to me. It represents a time in my life when I’m remembering the past with fondness, but also looking ahead and feeling hopeful about the future. And as far as my quilting journey goes, I feel invigorated that this quilt represents fabric selections which aren’t my norm, but at the same time, feel very true to self.
This quilt also holds a special place in my heart because my grown-up son spent a Sunday afternoon with me, travelling local backroads, searching for brilliant fall foliage and serving as quilt holder while I took pictures. It reminded me of times we spent outdoors when he was little . . . doing those simple things that bring happiness, like riding bike, building a fort, or jumping in leaf piles.
Thank you for being a part of my quilting and life journey. I appreciate the time you take to read my blog, and the messages and finished projects you share with me through email or social media. Whatever your season or journey, I hope that Carried Away Quilting is a blessing to you.
Journeys Quilt:
- Finished Size: 69” x 77”
- Feature fabrics: 18 fat quarters from Art Gallery Fabrics, designers included: Sharon Holland , Bonnie Christine , Maureen Cracknell and Amy Sinibaldi . (The backing fabric was from Bonnie Christine’s Open Road collection.
- Background fabric: Moda’s Indigo Chambray
- Quilting: Woods Edge Quilting of Becker, MN
- Pattern release: sometime in 2022

I really really really love this quilt! But anything with Chambray catches my eye since my favorite color is denim. 🙂 Your color choices and combinations are wonderful too. Bookmarking this so I am reminded to make one like it soon. Thank you for the inspiration!
Thanks so much . . . I think denim is my favorite color too. Blue has always been my favorite color, but I shied away from it in my home for many years. I don’t know why. We should do what we love! Thanks for visiting!!
I do love seeing something new that you’ve made. I always enjoy seeing your color choices. This quilt is just beautiful. I agree with the other commenter—using blue chambray was the perfect touch for your autumn quilt.
Thank you!! I appreciate your sweet comments and the time you’ve taken to visit my blog. Have a great day!
Loved hearing about the Journey that brought you to design this quilt! Yes, I often reflect, where I started and how far I’ve come in quilting – and keep praying my little baby quilts bring comfort and blessings to those who shall receive them. Looking forward to your release of this pattern. With this lovely background – all the different prints just shine. It is a beautiful quilt, Taunja!
Thank you Sigi! You are such a difference maker! Your sewing and quilting is truly a blessing to so many others. I have no doubt that many, many babies and families feel cared for through your quilts! Have a great week and enjoy this nice weather we’re having! 🙂
Wow!! I love everything about this quilt and can hardly wait for your pattern release. In the meantime, would you share the block size of the squares and the multi-colored rectangles between the rows?
Hi Virginia! Please email and we can talk specifics! Thanks so much for your kind words!
I really like the chambray. I’m trying to make some quilts without a white/light background and this would be great.
Thank you Sue! I have really been leaning to the chambray for background lately. It’s a nice change up! I’m sure you’ll like it!
Love the blue background and the stunning Autumn scenery xxx
Thank you Glenis! I hope all is well with you!
Absolutely stunning 😍. I love your insight and the quilt reflects this introspection. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much Libby! I was afraid maybe I got a bit too “rambling” with my thoughts. Have a wonderful week!
This is a beautiful quilt. I like the blue background so much. I really need to get more adventuresome with my backgrounds. Your thoughts reflect so much how I am feeling at this stage of my life. Thank you! I look forward to the release of the pattern.
Thanks so much Jill. I’m glad to hear you connected to my post. And we probably all need to get more adventuresome with a lot of things. ha! Have a wonderful week. Hope you give a colored background a try sometime soon! 🙂
Beautiful quilt! I’ve been searching for a pattern that fits my daughter and I believe this will be it. Thus far she is a world traveler and this will be perfect! I look forward to your pattern release!
Thanks for your kind words! I hope to get to this pattern after the new year! 🙂

Please note that we have two sections of Free Projects, a Current section and an Archive section. The Journey Nears An End...

I had posted a little about this "Border Challenge" quilt earlier; it came off the frame yesterday. I entitled the piece "It's The Journey" because I learned so much along the way (it truly was a challenge; design elements and colors were randomly selected at my LQS each month), never really understanding the destination (or final "plan") ahead of time. It was a wonderful learning experience! The freedom to quilt each component of this quilt with the smoothness of Quilt Glide and and ease of movement provided by the Bliss drive helped me to acheive the dream quilting I was hoping for! It will hang in my studio right above my Millenium.

Wow, Debbie, you did a fantastic job, piecing and quilting. Just beautiful!!!!
Wow! What a beautiful quilting job. Excellent choices. I absolutely love the feathers in your outer bordar and how you went around the squares with the feathers. Just super!!!
Your quilt is fantastic. I love your quilting choices. There is so much going on and it is all interesting and compliments each other. Great job!
That is really pretty. Love the bright colors and your quilting really sets it off .
That is absolutely gorgeous...both quilting and the quilt! Great job!!
Debbie, this is beautiful! Love the quilting designs you chose and your feathers are beautiful.
I'd love to take a journey like this!
Thanks, everyone, for your kind compliments, I give my new Millenium, "Snowbird", all the quilting credit. I have decided upon a tiny black and white stripe (bias cut) piping to accent a black binding... this "journey" isn't done yet! Also, I created the LARGEST ever label for the back. I've attached a copy of that so that you can read through the challenge "rules" and see for yourself how I ended up with this creation:
“It’s The Journey”
Debra Cunningham Voigt
Pfafftown, NC ~ November 2014
This quilt is the product of a monthly “Head For The Border” challenge held at a local quilt shop: Sew Original , Winston-Salem, NC beginning in November 2013. I began with the four Winding Ways blocks in the center of the quilt, from there the design elements and colors were decided by random drawings:
Round # 1 ~ Rectangles and the color black
Round #2 ~ Flying Geese and the color green
Round #3 ~ Squares and the color brown
Round #4 ~ Square in a Square and the color purple
Round #5 ~ Pieced blocks and the color orange
Round #6 ~ Applique and the colors red, blue and/or yellow
Since this wasn’t a quilt that could be pre-planned it became an exercise in “design as you go” and presented many false starts and pitfalls along the way; the decisions were never clear cut (as implied by the quote). It wasn’t until the final round that I realized it never had been about the destination after all, this project was all about the journey. As a quiltmaker I was stretched and challenged at every juncture. Given the opportunity, I would participate in a challenge like this one all over again; it was great fun!
Beautiful quilting and quilt.
JenniferBernard
I love doing challenges! Thanks for sharing the "rules"! I had to go back to the pictures to check how you handled each step with such style and creativity! It certainly turned out amazing!
Wow, how very creative! I love your appliqué border! Very well done, Debbie!
I love to see all the different elements in this quilt.
Wow, that quilt is fantastic and you nailed it with the quilting!
What a treasure! Beautiful quilt and quilting!
K. Szymaszek
Beautiful all the way around.
IF that quilt were on my bed, I'd stay in the bedroom all day, just looking at it.
I love the bright colors, and of course the piecing and quilting.
You really did a beautiful job, all the way around.
such a fantastic quilt design and amazing quilting!

17 Ridiculously Easy Quilts You Can Make In A Day
When most of us think about quilt-making, we usually think about complex designs, time-consuming patterns, and scores of hours spent creating a fabric masterpiece.
However, what if you want to make a quilt in a day? Is that even possible?
The short answer: YES!
We’ve gathered a fantastic array of quick and easy quilt patterns for you to choose from, and though they are simple, they are also gorgeous.
Let’s dive right into it!
What's In This Article
What Are the Easiest Quilts to Make in a Day?
If you want to make a quilt in one day, realistically, you should try to make either a baby quilt or a throw-size quilt.
Anything larger than that will take more time, making it much more challenging to create in a day.
So what type of quilts can be made this quickly? Below are the quilt types to watch for if you want to make a quick and easy quilt.
- Strip quilts : As the name implies, these quilts are made using strips of fabric.
- One-patch quilts : These use one patch, whether a rectangle, square, hexagon, or triangle, for the entire design. You will see several examples in the quilt pattern compilation later in this post.
- One-block quilts : The pattern only uses one type of block, usually a simple design such as an eight-point star block or churn dash block.
- Whole-cloth quilts : If you want to skip the quilt top piecing altogether, you can create a quilt by using a large piece of fabric for the quilt top. This is called a whole cloth quilt and is popular for making baby quilts.
How to Make an Easy Quilt in a Day
When you want to make a quilt in just a few hours, you need to find shortcuts to help save time. One of the best ways to do this is to use precut fabrics.
Let’s say you have a layer cake precut bundle and want to make a cozy throw for your living room.
Layer cake squares are 10” x 10” and come in a pack of 42 squares.
If we create a layout of six squares across and six squares down, we will use 36 squares, and the finished quilt will measure approximately 57” x 57”.
- Select which squares you want to use from your layer cake pack.
- Lay them out how you want them to be on the quilt.
- Sew the horizontal rows together.
- Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top.
- Create your quilt sandwich.
Stack the layers of the quilt together (quilt top, batting, and backing) and baste. You can baste using pins, glue, spray adhesive, or other methods.
- Quilt as desired.
If you want to complete this quilt all in one day, I recommend using a simple quilting design such as stitch-in-the-ditch or another method of straight-line quilting. Below is an example of how you could use straight-line quilting.
- Bind the quilt.
This is the final step, so don’t rush it. The binding keeps the raw edges of the quilt secure and finishes the quilt with a beautiful border.
17 Ridiculously Easy Quilts to Make In A Day
Now that we know you CAN make a quilt in one day let’s check out some fun examples of what is possible. All of these patterns and ideas are perfect for beginner-friendly projects.
1. Easy and Fast Quilt in a Day
Here is a fun and free pattern with a one-patch design with small squares. The pattern includes instructions on strip-piecing, a newer technique that helps save time (and is fun to do!) The finished quilt will measure 54” x 63”.
2. Two-Piece Block Quilt
This simple quilt pattern uses yardage to create several blocks at a time. This free tutorial from Nancy Zieman’s blog will help you make an adorable baby-size quilt measuring approximately 36” x 44 ½”. The tutorial includes excellent instructions and diagrams for creating multiple blocks simultaneously.
3. Ribbon Box Quilt
This quilt may look complex, but it has a simple construction method. If you want to make this in one day, I recommend cutting the fabric ahead of time since there are quite a few pieces. The finished quilt measures 55” x 63”.
4. The Greatest Granny Square Quilt
Here is a super simple free quilt pattern from Quilty Love. This pattern uses large squares meant to mimic knitted granny squares. This is a perfect beginner quilt project and should only take a few hours to construct.
5. Fat Quarter Mixer
Do you have a fat quarter bundle lying around collecting dust? This pattern will make good use of those beautiful fabrics, don’t you think? This beginner quilt pattern features rectangles and squares in a fun layout that allows the fabric to be the star. You only need ten fat quarters to make a throw size quilt.
6. Simple Basket Weave Quilt
This is an excellent pattern to use if you have a layer cake pack that you want to use for your quick quilt project. The finished quilt will measure 52” x 61” and can be made in as little as six hours.
This quilt looks beautiful with a white background, but I bet it would look stunning with a dark background like a navy or black shade.
7. Snuggle Layer Cake Quilt
This quilt pattern uses layer cakes and is another fantastic quick and easy quilt pattern. It is also free! This would make the perfect birthday gift, and it is a great size at 41 ¾” x 58 ¼”.

15. Cherry Baby
This is a charm pack (5” squares) friendly pattern that is adorable and quick to make. The pattern includes instructions to create a 27” x 31 ½” baby quilt.
This is an excellent pattern for a beginner because it tells you how to construct the quilt top and includes directions for basting, quilting, binding, and how to care for it.
16. Seeing Double
“Seeing Double” is a modern quilt pattern made entirely of four-patch blocks “on point.” This pattern includes baby and throw-size instructions which you could make in a day, though it will take time to cut all the squares. I recommend cutting all the fabric ahead of time.
17. Rag Strip Quilt
Have you ever made a rag quilt? They are a lot of fun to make, and this tutorial is a great starting point. Rag quilts are a popular choice for babies since you usually use soft flannel fabric, and babies love the texture of the “rag” edges. You can make a 44” x 40” quilt following this tutorial.
It’s pretty amazing how many options there are for quick and easy quilt patterns. I hope this collection of simple quilt patterns has inspired you to create one on your next free day.
