Visit 4 historic taverns in this famous port City

Liverpool Tavern Trails operates pre-arranged guided walking tours of Liverpool’s historic pubs.

The City of Liverpool lies on the banks of the River Mersey facing West towards Wales and beyond to Ireland but is just over 2 hours by fast train from London.  From humble beginnings in 1207, Liverpool grew to be one of the most important ports in the world.  At its height Liverpool boasted that 40% of world trade passed through its docks.

The wealth created by this commerce was used to fund stunning public buildings and today it has over 2,500 listed buildings. In 2004 UNESCO designated the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City a World Heritage Site.

Liverpool was the birthplace of modern popular music when the Beatles burst onto the scene in the 1960s. It was well merited when Liverpool became the European Capital of Culture in 2008.  There is no better place to see that culture and the people of Liverpool than in its many pubs.

We have devised these 4 distinct walking tours, each including 4 different historic taverns:

Georgian Liverpool – Liverpool has more Georgian buildings than Bath and is often used by film producers for period location shoots.

The Seven Streets of Medieval Liverpool – we walk around the town hall along the original street pattern from the 13 th century town and see how it has changed.

Maritime Liverpool – A walk through the seafaring history of Liverpool including Europe’s oldest Chinatown and the world’s first commercial wet dock.

St George’s Plateau UNESCO World Heritage site – we explore the events that took place in and around St George’s Hall that shaped the city and had a huge influence on the rest of the country.

Each tour lasts about 2.5 hours and covers around 1.2 miles and can include a meal stop if needed.  The tours work best in the evening but can be booked for the afternoon if it would better suit your schedule.

We normally operate the tours between April and October, with some limited availability outside this period.  We also usually require a minimum of 5 people to be booked on each tour for it to be viable.

The Best Traditional Pub Crawl in Liverpool

Outside of Liverpool Philharmonic Pub

Step back in time on a traditional pub crawl in Liverpool. Come drink with me as I explore the pubs in Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter where time stands still. If you want to carry on drinking elsewhere in town, I also recommend some other places to go to continue your traditional pub crawl in Liverpool.

There’s something really enchanting about old pubs. A traditional pub crawl in Liverpool can connect you with the past in a way that other historical sites, such as museums or stately homes, aren’t able to.

I think the difference is that old pubs in Liverpool still serve the same purpose today that they did all those years ago. Time has moved on, and the world outside couldn’t be more different, but yet within these watering holes, time is very much standing still.

Traditional Pub Crawl in Liverpool

The beauty of a traditional pub crawl in Liverpool, and the reason I find the pubs so magical, is that they remain untouched from when they were first established all those years ago. I like to romanticise about the types of people that sat in the same spot as me, sipping on their chosen poison. What did they wear? What did they talk about? What did they do for a living? Where did they live? If there was ever a time that I wished walls could talk, this is definitely it. Just imagine what they would say!

If you want to be a part of living history (and why would you not?!) then you’ll enjoy this traditional pub crawl in Liverpool.

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms (“The Phil”)

I’d arranged to meet my friends in the Grade II listed Philharmonic Dining Rooms. A huge Victorian building, it was designed to resemble a gentleman’s club for the Liverpool brewer Robert Cain in the late 1890s. Decorative black and gold Art Nouveau gates frame the entrance giving you just a hint of some of the grand designs that await you inside.

Outside the Philharmonic DIning Rooms, Liverpool

Funnily enough, it’s not the drinks OR the food that make this place so famous. No…it’s arguably most famous for the ornate men’s toilets!

Unfortunately, being of the opposite sex, we obviously couldn’t go in for a peek. But don’t despair, girls! I’m told that there are certain ‘visiting times’ when us ladies are permitted to have a look inside the gent’s toilets.

Toilets aside, this popular pub also has a pretty spectacular interior. It oozes style and riches and you can imagine that it was only the very wealthy members of society that once set foot in here. I heard a rumour that it’s where first class passengers from the Titanic came for a drink prior to boarding the fateful ship.

It’s such a vast, grand space that I actually found walking in on my own a little intimidating. If you’re meeting friends here like I was, you may have to search around the little snug rooms (all named after famous composers – one of the many details which link this pub with the Philharmonic Music Hall just across the road) or have a quick sweep around the dining room before you eventually find them.

Once your eyes have adjusted to the lowered lighting, somehow seemingly resembling candlelight, it’s hard not to look around you, wide-eyed in complete awe. Never have I seen a bar look quite so fancy!

Inside the Philharmonic Dining Rooms, Liverpool

Probably the first thing that struck me was the impressive art deco style chandeliers that glisten above the expansive dark mahogany wood bar. Mahogany seems to be a bit of a theme here, with the walls all adorned in the same dark wood panels, some displaying copper artwork. All these dark colours could make the place feel quite gloomy and repressed, except that the fabulously colourful stained glass windows see to it that light from outside is allowed to flood in, injecting some rich, contrasting reds and greens into the mix.

There’s plenty of places to sit (and stand). We settled for some comfy sofas in the dining room, right in front of a cosy roaring fire. We didn’t eat here, but the food does look particularly delish and I reckon I’ll be back soon to dig into some of that steak, amber ale and mushroom pie. Yum!

And what about the drinks! Being part of the Nicholson’s chain of establishments, the pub specialises in ale and gin, and there’s also plenty of whiskeys to choose from if that’s more your thing. Aware that I still wanted to be able to string a sentence together by 9 pm, I settled for half of the Shipyard IPA. Served with a smile by the friendly girl behind the bar, it proved to be a citrusy, light, refreshing start to a fun day.

The Belvedere

I’d always wanted to go to this pub, but for whatever reason, never made it inside. Well, today was my lucky day!

We walked down Hope Street past the Philharmonic Hall, and turned up Falkner Street. Even the short walk here was enjoyable; I’ve always loved the cobbled streets and beautiful houses in the Georgian Quarter. It’s no wonder they use this area for so many films and TV series.

liverpool historic pub tour

The Belvedere is tucked away in Sugnall Street; a tiny dead-end street just off Falkner Street. Benches are arranged outside, ready to welcome punters at the first sign of sunshine. Sadly, despite being the first week of spring, the sunshine was nowhere to be seen and we piled inside in search of warmth.

Inside was nothing like I had imagined. I’d expected a tiny pub, dimly lit, nothing particularly special. I certainly hadn’t anticipated the collection of quirky features that greeted me the moment I walked through the door!

We turned immediately left and found ourselves in a small snug, complete with fireplace and poster of John Lennon. Apparently, this pub was one of the favourites of the Fab Four, amongst other famous musicians who wander down from the nearby Philharmonic Hall.

My friend and I went to order drinks from the bar which, from the side of the snug, meant we had to chat through open sash windows (inside the bar!) to the barman, John. Through these etched sash windows, we could see regulars on tall bar stools propping up the curved wooden bar, quietly drinking a pint of one of the 4 local craft ales and reading the daily paper.

In the small corridor, we stood to wait for our turn with other customers who were ready with a smile and some good-humoured banter. And John the barman, clearly knowledgeable about his drinks selection, was more than willing to take his time to explain the options available. There was a homely, welcoming atmosphere about this pub that I really warmed to.

Probably the biggest surprise I had was that this pub actually specialises in gin! Never in a million years did I expect this tiny, old school, good old-fashioned boozer to be a gin bar…or a Ginnasium as it likes to call itself. Ale, yes….but gin?!

Liverpool Gin at The Belvedere Pub

In fact, not only does it specialise in gin, but the barman, John is no other than one of the founders of the crisp and fresh tasting Liverpool Gin! Needless to say, once we knew this, it was a decision made. Liverpool Gins all round! And if our choice was a little more expensive than the regular gins on offer, it was 100% worth it to see John meticulously prepare it, complete with a preparation stage dedicated to aerating the tonic! Historical setting, amazing service and a Liverpool Gin. Could a girl really ask for anything more?!

Just a stones throw from The Belvedere is Ye Cracke. Now, Ye Cracke is one of those Liverpool institutions that doesn’t really need much of an introduction. Chances are, you’ve heard about this pub before, even if you haven’t realised it yet.

Famed as being one of the oldest pubs in the city, this 19 th century public house was featured on The Hairy Bikers ‘Pubs That Built Britain’ as being the place where John Lennon used to drink when he was studying at the nearby Liverpool Arts College. And if that’s not reason enough to come down for a swift half, ‘The Sunday Times’ recently listed Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter as being one of the best places to live in 2018, with Ye Cracke named as one of the reasons why!

Surprised to find our favourite spot available in ‘The War Room’, the oldest part of the pub and the only part of the building that is listed, we ordered our drinks from the well-stocked bar and settled in for an hour or two around the large table.

It’s clear that what this tiny place lacks in size, it more than makes up for in character. Like a lot of the smaller pubs in this area, it’s not just the pub itself, which is filled with Beatles memorabilia and pictures of Liverpool in times gone by, but the bar staff and the regulars that really give this place a personality. You’ll learn a lot about Liverpool, the locals and the famous people that have graced the doorstep of this tiny no-frills boozer; all you’ve got to do is ask.

Despite coming to this pub on and off since my days in 6 th form, I’ve never known there to be a beer garden out the back. And despite the chill in the air, we couldn’t resist going outside for a nosey when the barman offered to unlock the door to let us have a look.

Overlooked by the Cathedral, I’m sure it’s a great place to come for a cold beer on a hot day….but sadly today wasn’t that day and we retreated back into the warmth of The War Room to finish our drinks.

Peter Kavanagh’s

As the sky across Liverpool started to darken, we shuffled into the final stop on our traditional Liverpool pub crawl.

Peter Kavanaghs Pub, Liverpool

Peter Kavanagh’s on Egerton Street is a pub we know well, having spent many an evening in here when friends have lived in nearby streets. And like any familiar place, the pub has that warm, friendly atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve finally arrived back home.

Admittedly, my home looks nothing like the inside of Peter Kavanagh’s. I’m not sure there are many places in the world that do!

Named after the landlord who owned the pub between 1897-1950, Peter Kavanagh’s is a bit like walking into a cross between Aladdin’s Cave and a pirate ship. Its busy interior is decked out in colourful and often bizarre artefacts, ranging from life-size crocodile skins and old back and white photographs, to mirrors, gas masks and model trains.

Inside Peter Kavanaghs Pub

A regular once told me that the random collections were gifts from sailors who docked into Liverpool. Wherever they came from, part of the fun of coming to Peter Kavanagh’s is having a good look around at the weird and wonderful bits and pieces on display. No matter how many times I’ve been in here, it seems there’s always something to look at that I’ve never noticed before!

To add to the quirky but loveable world that is Peter Kavanagh’s, there’s the resident pub Labrador. An elderly, chunky, chocolate softy who greets you on arrival and mooches around the pub, mostly minding his own business, but welcoming the occasional pat on the head and the offer of a scampi fry. Drinks are cheap and there’s a decent selection of beers and ales on tap as well as all the usual spirits. And, if you’re lucky, on special occasions, the landlady, Rita might treat everyone to a good old buffet of sandwiches and sausage rolls!

Last Orders at the Bar

So that’s all from me for now. We’re getting comfy and staying put here in this corner till closing time. You’re welcome to stay with us and get another round in (mine’s a G&T), or venture on and explore some of the other recommendations for a traditional pub crawl in Liverpool below.

You’ll soon realize that there’s far more to a great pub than just the beer it serves as you explore the top 10 pubs in Liverpool.

Cavern Pub

You’ve probably ticked off the famous Cavern Club already so why not head across the road to the Cavern Pub . It is an intimate city center spot full of rock memorabilia and has live music almost every night. The entry into the pub is free unlike The Cavern Club so it is a great place to grab a pint after a day of seeing all the must-sees of Liverpool. Lion Tavern

Lion Tavern

The Lion Tavern is a Grade II listed pub that recently received a major makeover to freshen it up while still preserving all the best characteristics. Enjoy the friendly atmosphere, a pint or two of ale from the hand pumps, and the famous pork pies. Jive away to the music on the legendary Lion jukebox while you take in the beauty of the ornately detailed wood bar, hand-carved screens, and the art nouveau tiled dado.  Address: 67 Moorfields, Liverpool City Centre L2 2BP

The Vines

Locally known as the “ Big Ouse ” this highly decorated pub is a favorite among the locals and a must-visit if you’re looking for things to do in Liverpool. The whole pub basically explodes with decoration when you step inside from the relief Viking ships in the smoking room to a copper-fronted bar counter and cute cherubs made from plaster. Make sure you enter the high-ceilinged room at the back, if it is open, to admire giant Corinthian pilasters, a massive marble fireplace, and an oval skylight - it really is quite a spectacle. Address: 81 Lime Street, Liverpool City Centre L1 1JQ

White Star

This cozy pub is an absolute hidden gem that’s worth exploring. The White Star is smack in the middle of the tourist trail on Mathew Street but is often overlooked. You’’ be greeted by its red-tiled frontage in Rainford Gardens and as you step inside you’ll find a mix of red leather, fancy tiling, and elaborate wood carving. Browse the framed Liverpool nostalgia that adorns the walls, revealing its connection to the Beatles.  Address: 2-4 Rainford Gardens, Liverpool City Centre L2 6PT

The Baltic Fleet

The Baltic Fleet

If you are a fan of the more traditional British pubs, then this beautiful listed building is one for you. The Baltic Fleet serves an excellent range of ales, including locals brews, as well as a fine selection of gins. The pub is the perfect place to stop for lunch after a morning of exploring Liverpool. The food is absolutely delicious, especially the hearty bowls of scouse, a type of lamb or beef stew - it’s the pub’s specialty. There’s a terrace ideal for when it’s sunny out, and a stove burning indoors when it isn’t – so this place is a year-round keeper. Address: 33A Wapping, Liverpool L1 8DQ

Doctor Duncan’s

Doctor Duncan’s

Arguably one of Liverpool’s most ornate pubs, even the tiles in Doctor Duncan's are awe-inspiring, decorating the walls and fireplaces throughout the Victorian-style pub. Built for Pearl Insurance in 1901, it features medical memorabilia throughout, including a Victorian pharmacy cabinet which is a nod to its namesake, William Henry Duncan, the UK's first medical officer of health. The pub serves a selection of cask ales and it’s the perfect place to step back in time and enjoy a pint. Address: St John's Lane, Liverpool City Centre, L1 1HF

Crown Hotel

Address: 43 Lime Street, L1 1JQ

The Dovey (The Dovedale Towers)

The Dovey (The Dovedale Towers)

You simply can’t visit pubs in Liverpool without discovering it has some sort of connection with the Beatles. The Dovey is another pub well known for just that, in fact, the Quarrymen, John Lennon's boyhood band, played here before the Beatles were formed. The pub’s decor alone is worth the trip with the tiled floors and intricately carved wooden pillars. It’s another great place to enjoy a pint during your time in Liverpool. The 13 best pubs in Liverpool

There's nowhere quite like Liverpool, and the best pubs in the city are tailor-made for a tremendous tipple or three

Ed Cunningham

If you like a good pint in compelling surroundings, the best pubs in Liverpool are manna from heaven. There’s nowhere quite like Liverpool, a city of character, history and community, and its pubs are integral to it all. From friendly neighbourhood boozers to city centre slickers, you’ll almost certainly find your new favourite pub somewhere here.

Liverpool is always moving forward, but there is a reliable comfort in its best pubs that is utterly reassuring. There’s just something about an old-school pub - we’re talking dark wood, stained glass, fireplaces and near-constant chatter - that sets the soul at ease. Nowhere does it quite like Liverpool.

Amazing pubs in Liverpool

The Poste House

1.  The Poste House

If you want your pub old, your drink cheap, and your crowd mixed, the Poste House should be right up your Danny La Rue. This is the sort of drinking hole you’d expect to see in an old black-and-white film, the kind of place where ‘theatrical types’ gather. And they still do, with a young gay/mixed clientele upstairs and passers-by downstairs. You might be drawn in by the old-fashioned look and old-fashioned prices, but you’ll stay for the buzz.

The Old Bank

2.  The Old Bank

If a taste of Victorian grandeur is what you’re after, the former First National Bank of Liverpool is one of many architectural jewels along James Street – and now it’s got a pub in it. Head to the veranda level to the cocktail bar, where you can dine with views over the throng below. The Old Bank is a beautiful building and just across from Queen Victoria’s cock, should you fancy a childish giggle on your way home.

The Grapes

3.  The Grapes

Built on the site of an old tavern, the Grapes has been around since 1804 – making it one of Liverpool’s oldest surviving pubs. It may be known for its dizzying selection of rums, but there are also plenty of beers and gins on offer. The Grapes hosts regular music nights, with a slant towards jazz, while a beer garden makes for a thoroughly pleasant drink outdoors come summer.

The Boat House

4.  The Boat House

Famous for its tremendous ice cream and fish and chip shops, Parkgate is a Wirral tourist hotspot that’s also home to the Boat House , a tremendous old pub at the start of what’s known as Parkgate’s Parade. It overlooks the Dee estuary, which is an RSPB nature reserve, so if a laid-back afternoon of seafood, beer and twitching takes your fancy, you’re in for a total treat.

The Shipping Forecast

5.  The Shipping Forecast

When is a pub a bar, and when is a bar a music venue? Ostensibly all three, the Shipping Forecast has the laid-back feel of a pub (and drinks menu to match), so, despite having hosted nights by the likes of Mark Ronson and Disclosure, that’s why it is deserving of its place on this list.  Expect a wide array of beers and cocktails served by friendly and knowledgeable staff in the heart of the RopeWorks neighbourhood.

The Ferry

6.  The Ferry

Take a quick trip across the water to the Wirral, walk a few minutes to the Ferry, and you’ll be rewarded with absolutely fantastic views of Liverpool’s waterfront. But the panoramas aren’t the only reason to visit, as The Ferry is a historic pub serving locally sourced food and a brilliant selection of cask and craft ales. In warmer weather, grab one of the glorious pub-front tables.

Peter Kavanagh’s

7.  Peter Kavanagh’s

In Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter, you’ll find Peter Kavanagh's , one of the city’s most storied watering holes. The owner, one Peter Kavanagh, has been a painter, inventor, and a city councillor – and his venue is as eclectic as his CV. So beloved is it that several punters, long since gone, remain in urns displayed in the dark interior. There’s occasional live music, you can take your dog, and the ales are great, too.

The Caledonia Liverpool

8.  The Caledonia Liverpool

This corner pub may not look like much from the outside, but step inside the Caledonia , and you’ll find a traditional pub where community really matters. Not only does it serve top-notch drinks, this old-fashioned spot has gone modern with its 100 percent vegan menu and community library (well, bookshelf for now). It also puts on so many gigs you could come here every night and never get bored.

The Lisbon

9.  The Lisbon

A proper old-school Victorian boozer, the Lisbon is tucked down a flight of stairs and comes with all the dated design features you’d expect: tiled floors, sticky carpet, wood panelling and a glorious ceiling. It’s been a huge part of Liverpool’s LGBTQ+ scene for decades and hasn’t changed to accommodate fads and tastes. The crowd’s mixed, so don’t think you’ve wandered into the wrong place on a Saturday if it looks a bit, well, straight. It isn’t.

Ye Cracke

10.  Ye Cracke

A nineteenth-century jewel tucked away in the Georgian Quarter, Ye Cracke is as old-school a pub as you can hope to find, with its multitude of small seating areas, including a war room and a proper ‘snug’, and without a TV screen in sight. It has a rich history, of course, and though it trades on its links to some famous Scouse band perhaps a little too much, it’s still a very cool place to be.
