MakeMyTrip's approach to redefining travel booking in the UAE

Online travel service provider  MakeMyTrip  is expanding its wings in both B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) segments. Last April, the company entered the United Arab Emirates ’ (UAE) B2B travel space with the launch of MyPartner, a platform for local travel agents.

How have its initiatives fared in this landscape?

“We have received positive feedback from the travel agent community in the UAE. In less than a year, we have more than 2,300 travel agents and 45% of partners have already transacted on the platform,” Saujanya Shrivastava, COO of MakeMyTrip, told YS Gulf .

In India, the service has currently onboarded 40,000 travel agents.

Another tool in MakeMyTrip’s kit is the MyBiz platform, which caters to corporate clients, automates travel booking, and offers cost-effective options, exclusive deals, express care tools, and policy-based bookings.

Entering the UAE Market

Recognising Dubai as an international hub with a diverse population, including a significant Indian diaspora and South Asian presence, presents an opportunity for MakeMyTrip to offer its services.

“UAE provides a very conducive business environment and the local requirements are clear. Given the demand for travel to destinations across the world, it was imperative to get price competitive across multiple airlines and hotels,” Shrivastava said.

MakeMyTrip saw an opportunity and ventured into the UAE B2C market in April 2020. 

The platform has over two million monthly active users on the B2C platform, with a Y-o-Y growth rate of more than 50%.

"The decision to enter the market was driven by several key factors, including the UAE's sizable travel market characterised by a mix of visiting friends and family (VFR) travel , business trips, and leisure travel," Shrivastava stated.

“Furthermore, the market had a notable offline presence ripe for disruption by an OTA offering superior technology and product offerings,” he added. 

Deep Kalra founded MakeMyTrip offers flights and hotel bookings on its B2C platform. 

“We are also working on solving under-served market needs and continually innovating their products and services,” Shrivastava added.

Localising presence 

MakeMyTrip is also leveraging technology to localise its services. For example, its MMTConnect solution uses machine learning to combine connections with multiple airlines to provide the lowest fares through virtual interlining. 

The platform also launched Arabic support for its Android and iOS apps to enable a localised product experience.

“With round-the-clock customer support available in both English and Arabic, we ensure customers receive assistance whenever they need it,” he said

Future plans

To enhance its reach and offerings in the UAE, MakeMyTrip works with companies in the market, such as RTA, Etisalat Smiles, Zomato, Hala, and tourism boards in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, KSA, and Maldives, for joint promotions and customer acquisition. 

It has also forged alliances with banks and financial platforms  including Emirates NBD, ADCB, Emirates Islamic, Citi, American Express, and more, offering enticing deals to users and enhancing its reach and offerings in the region.

With a Dubai office housing its GCC business and marketing team, myPartner ( B2B2C ) team, and international hotel supply team, MakeMyTrip is poised for further growth. 

MakeMyTrip competes with players such as  Cleartrip  ,  Agoda  ,  Expedia  ,  Booking.com  , Travelocity, among others. 

The company is also expanding its offline presence by opening retail stores across the country and aims to attract customers who prefer booking directly or in person, tapping into a segment still reliant on traditional offline methods for travel bookings.

Flight rate are manipulated

For first time I have been offered lowest flight rate during my flight search on website search, I’m addition they encourage me to do the booking using their app as I will get 20% flat discount on this booking, till this point I was very happy to enjoy this rate with this discount. At the end I found that I will pay the original search price offered, how this manipulation happen: they will increase the price in the invoice by 20%, then again they will deduct the 20%(means no discount since the start, it’s just a promise which will not happen), then paid convenience fee (some times aed 40 and another time aed 50) with no clarity what is this fee for and how it’s calculated. Simply they charged this fee for each ticket and each individual. Once I booked for one family member then I have to book for remaining members to a avoid more travel complications that may occur. Any case it’s an experience that give me new leaning about what additional check last to do while booking and to use calculator every time before confirm the payment.

Hi, I have had an horrible experience with make my trip on my trip to jordan from egypt. I have booked a ticket through mmt for 8th October from cairo(egypt) to amman(jordan) i raise a request on their app on 6th october to change my date to 7th when i had no response from them i called them to request for date change which they first denied and after many request they said it will cost me AED 1100 which was as good as the ticket price hence i denied the date change request. I reached to airport on the booked date of 8th October 2022 and on counter they said my tickets were changed to 7th october and i have missed my flight. I called mmt right from but they said they can’t do anything. I had to stay in egypt while i booked everything in jordan right from airport transfer to hotel and my tour. However after requesting them from 9th of October for refund i have no refund and no one responds to my email, call centre attendants refuse call transfer to their supervisors and they have not even acknowledged that they made a mistake. I request everyone to avoid going through such disastrous situation and book your tickets directly with airline as when i called royal jordanian airline from airport on 8th of october they said they are willing to help but they can’t due to tickets being booked through mmt.

I wondered why it’s cheap and not popular

Now I know. It’s because your booking is always not guaranteed. I received the confirmation number about the hotel booking. When I called the hotel, they said it’s not booked. Then I called this app, they said, oh it’s sold out. What they’re doing is they canceled the low priced bookings and sell them to people who paid more. This happened all the time, they are so glad that you agreed that you want the refund. That way, you don’t lose anything but making more money by selling it to other people who paid higher price!!! They don’t care about your schedule!!! I could sleep because all the phone calls and they couldn’t fix the problem and ended up me canceling the booking as they wanted me to.

Do not go for flight booking

Do not go for flight booking, go directly to airlines website. In case of any date change they just do fraud. Any addon is just fake. Myself got trapped, and 15000 more. I love MMT rewards which are expire…

I love MMT rewards which are expire before you finish your rewarded trip. It’s some kind of scam: they reward you in a way, you will never be able to use and even you can, you will be eligible to use a small part of it. Prices are same and sometimes more expensive than other, BUT they have no support (Like Expedia) to chat or to call. I’m deleting my account and uninstall the apps to clean my phone from such “provider”.

SCAMMERS - DONT TRUST ON THEIR APP -Worst customer service- FINALLY I GOT MY REFUND

I booked a Hotel by the agency MAKE MY TRIP UAE on United Arab Emirates, but the booking confirmation was not sent to my email address. Even when I made the payment, the website collapse and it showed a blank screen, after that I didn’t have any booking on “my trips”, the screen only says “You’ve no pending bookings”. I tried to contact them by many ways facebook chat, instagram, official contact centre but as I don’t have any booking reference they can’t see any transaction. Of course the website took my money and it’s very clear on my bank statement. I sent them all the proofs of the payment done but they are still saying “let us check, on 24hs we will answer you” delaying more and more. Very frustrating how the company is stealing the money in front of you. Afterwards spending 4 stressful days, could call to the hotel and they accept to refund my money. Anyway I insisted so many times to makemytrip customer service. They told me if the hotels has agreed with the refund, they could do the refund.

Bad experience, wasting of money and failure service

By using this app, I realized that you can’t fully trust an agency, even when they make promises. I booked a flight through the app, and after completing the payment, I needed to make changes to my return flight. I contacted the agency for assistance, but they informed me I would have to pay for the changes. I went online, adjusted the return flight time, and paid AED 2,780. However, I received an error message stating there was an operational issue, even though I had already made the payment. When I called them, they claimed the price had gone up, and I was expected to pay more. I ended up spending a large portion of my budget on this app, but my issue remains unresolved. Now, my original flight is canceled, my amended ticket isn’t confirmed, and I’ve lost my money, with my departure still six hours away.

Flight cancellation, NO refund

I emailed MMT to cancel more than a week before my flight. I received a generic response, that they are attending to my query. I emailed three more times, no informative response. Called once I returned and was refused any refund.

BAGGAGE SCAM

I have booked ticket at the website and Im pretty sure I booked the option with the check in baggage 12kg which says very popular, and before checking out and proceed with the payment, I have double and triple checked it, I paid and was confident everything is fine till I received my ticket the day after which shows no check in baggage, as in 0 - zero check in baggage. I complained, the customer service said somebody will call me within 72 hours but no one did, so I called them in the 4th day and told me that I booked the option light with no baggage included. Mind you in their website all options are light but with different baggage allowance. So what they told me is to manage my booging in Pegasus website and add the baggage I needed. It will appear that you can save from their website but in the end you have to pay more. Be very careful with booking in this app/website.

Despite multiple conversations with Shivani, who repeatedly promised that the refund would be completed within 24 to 48 hours, this timeframe has clearly not been honored. The ongoing delays and unfulfilled promises raise serious concerns about how your company handles customer complaints. If I do not receive the refund today, I will have no choice but to publish our entire correspondence on social media, allowing the public to see how a company worth billions like MakeMyTrip.com is failing its customers. I had booked my trip from pune to Bengaluru thru Make my trip flying by Akasa Air.On the day of the flight Akasa Air called to say the flight was cancelled dur to some technical issues.They said they can't help it and I can request the source of bookings to refund my amount.So I called this great Make my trip.They have refunded me only 1000 Rs out of 6000 Rs.!!!I have been writing to them continually but with no response.Such is this Web site.For all those who believe in this portal please do not book from them.They only loot you. I will never book from makemytrip…

I will never book from makemytrip again. I booked 7N/8D trip to Kashmir for 3 adults. The hotel in Gulmarg was in Tanmarg which is 15km short of it and we had to pay extra for transportation to gulmarg despite booking in Gulmarg as per itinerary. Pahalgam hotel that we stayed in for 2days had hopeless hygeine. The bathroom was stinking, had water-logging and all it's fittings were falling apart. Our room was shifted thrice. We had to kill about 20 flies in the room we were shifted into on 2nd day. Makemytrip makes big money from packages but doesn't give service as per itinerary.

Worst experience of travel in last 20years

I have been waiting in the airport for long time, because makemytrip keeps disconnecting my call and not providing proper answer on status of my flight. I am unable to get boarding pass from London to Bengaluru, because makemytrip is not reinstating the booking. The airport officials said - your travel agent has to only reinstate the booking, the flight is operational. I had to keep on phoning the agents on makemytrip and the calls keeps getting disconnected. Is this the way to treat a customer who is waiting at the airport and desperately waiting to board the flight? Worst experience I ever had, I have never faced anything like this

Not as what I booked

I have booked 4 nights in Batumi with a balcony (Hotel Old town). I paid extra to have a room with a balcony, but they gave me one without it and said there was an error in the system that showed there was a balcony when there was not. I was really angry because I could have paid less at another hotel without a balcony. Additionally, they asked me to pay more if I wanted a room with a balcony. When I said I would complain and write a bad review, the hotel said they could charge me for that. 😡

After your booking is confirmed, we will send your Dubai/UAE visa application to the UAE Embassy. The Embassy usually takes 5 to 8 working days to approve the Dubai/UAE Visa. You can apply for your Dubai/UAE visa anytime through EaseMyTrip. However, we will forward your documents to the Embassy for processing only 30 days prior to your planned departure, to ensure that your Dubai/UAE visa is valid at the time of your travel.

• Your flight tickets are not required for Dubai/UAE visa processing. However, we would require the flight tickets to update ‘Okay to Board’ approval (OTB) If you do, we will process OTB at additional cost. Okay to Board charge is not included given cost.
• If the applicant is under the age of 18 and travelling alone, further documentation will be requested.
• Please provide your airline tickets at least 72 hours before travel (excluding Saturday and Sunday) in order for your OK TO BOARD to be processed.
• Who Needs OK TO BOARD - Applicants with an Emigration Check Required Stamp on the back of their passport must apply for OTB before travel.
• In case your visa is rejected by the UAE Embassy, the Dubai/UAE visa fees will not be refunded.
