The weather also varies slightly from region to region – the north and west are the sunniest and driest, and the south and east can be quite windy especially during the winter while the center is much cooler.

Since I live in Mauritius, I’ve experienced my fair share of the Mauritius weather and although Mauritius is considered a year-round destination, there are some months that I would recommend avoiding.

So if you’re planning a trip, keep reading to find out what are the best months to visit Mauritius Island.

What is the best time of the year to visit Mauritius?

The best time to visit Mauritius actually depends on what you want out of your trip:

Best time to enjoy the beach: April to December.

Best time to go hiking: April to December.

Best time to see the waterfalls: January to April.

Cheapest time to go to Mauritius: May to October to benefit from cheaper hotel rates.

For the absolute best weather, plan your visit to Mauritius in October or November since these are the driest months of the year.

You’ll thus be able to take advantage of all the best things to do in Mauritius ! This is by far the best time of the year to go to Mauritius if you want to fully enjoy the beaches, visit the islands, or go hiking. Hotels and tours will also be slightly cheaper.

What is the worst time to visit Mauritius?

While there isn’t really a bad time to visit Mauritius, I would recommend avoiding the months of January to March since they are the hottest and rainiest.

This is also the cyclone season, so the weather can be very unpredictable, although it can still be sunny on certain days.

Overview of the weather in Mauritius

The weather in Mauritius varies slightly from region to region. The north and west coasts are the hottest and experience the least amount of rain. So, if you’re looking for the best regions to stay in Mauritius , I recommend either the north or west.

On the other hand, the weather in the south and the east of Mauritius is slightly cooler.

Just keep in mind that the east and southeast regions can get a bit windy during the winter months, mainly between July and September. If you’d like to kitesurf during your trip, this would be the best time to visit Mauritius.

Finally, the temperature in the center is much cooler compared to other regions since it’s found at a higher elevation. It also rains quite a lot there, so make sure to carry an umbrella or rain jacket if you plan on going there.

Summer in Mauritius

November to April

Average temperature: 24-31°C

During this time of the year, the weather tends to be hot, humid, and rainy. The latter is especially true in January, February, and March, which are considered the cyclone/rainy season. But this doesn’t mean that it will be raining every single day .

You should know that the weather is quite unpredictable in summer, so try to be flexible when planning your Mauritius trip itinerary .

If you want to see the waterfalls of Mauritius , summer would be the best time to go to Mauritius since they would look way more impressive.

Note : Make sure to check the weather forecast beforehand and avoid visiting the waterfalls when it’s raining as the hike could potentially be dangerous.

The average temperature for summer in Mauritius ranges from 24 to 31 degrees Celsius and can sometimes go up to 34°C in the north and west.

Winter in Mauritius

May to October

Average temperature: 15-28°C

The winter months are cooler and relatively dry, although you should expect some rainy days. Winter is the best season to visit Mauritius if you want to enjoy some of the beautiful Mauritius beaches or go on hikes .

Hotel and tours , will also be cheaper, so if you’re planning a budget trip to Mauritius , make sure to visit during winter.

The average temperature for winter in Mauritius ranges from 15 to 28 degrees Celsius. Note that it gets quite cold and wet in the central region, especially around Curepipe and the Black River Gorges National Park while the coastal regions are still warm.

Cyclone season in Mauritius

January to March

The cyclone season in Mauritius runs mainly from January to March, although it can sometimes begin in mid-December and end by mid-April.

Cyclones usually last about 3-4 days only, causing severe thunderstorms and torrential rain. Keep in mind that the weather can still be rainy a couple of days after the cyclone has passed.

The weather in Mauritius in January can be quite unpredictable since this also marks the beginning of the cyclone/rainy season. Although it can rain non-stop on certain days, it can also be sunny for several days in a row.

Don’t be discouraged though as January is the best time to visit Mauritius for those who want to see the waterfalls at their best.  

January is also one of the hottest months of the year with temperatures rising to 34 degrees Celsius, particularly along the coast.

Note : January is the peak season in Mauritius, so hotels are usually fully-booked and rates are much higher. Don’t forget to book your hotel well in advance if you’re visiting in January!

Mauritius weather in February

Similar to January, February is very hot and rainy. For reference, Mauritius was hit by two tropical cyclones in February 2022 which resulted in heavy rain for several days while there was only one cyclone in February 2023.

Also on certain days, it might be raining in the morning but the weather tends to get better in the afternoon.

Mauritius weather in March

From what I’ve noticed while living in Mauritius, it will be raining almost every other day so the weather in March isn’t always the best.

In general, the weather is nice in the morning but it usually starts raining at around 12/12:30 p.m.

There’s also a risk of flash floods, so make sure to check the weather forecast before leaving your hotel, especially if you’re planning to go on a hike.

Update : The weather in March has been surprisingly good in March 2023 with plenty of sunny days. But I still recommend having a flexible itinerary if you plan to visit in March.

Mauritius weather in April

While the beginning of the month might still bring some rain, April marks the beginning of sunnier days. It’s one of the best months to visit Mauritius since it’s the perfect time to go to the beach.

The only downside is that hotel rates will be slightly higher due to the Easter holidays. The beaches will also be more crowded, so make sure to go early.

Mauritius weather in May

May is considered one of the cheapest months to go to Mauritius. As the weather gets cooler, the price of hotels in Mauritius starts to drop. Luxury hotels like Dinarobin Beachcomber or Constance Belle Mare Plage will cost only a fraction of their normal price.

You’ll also find fewer crowds at the beach and popular attractions like Chamarel and Ile aux Cerfs .

While the weather in Mauritius in May is cooler compared to the previous months, the average temperature hovers around 23-25°C which is still nice for a dip in the ocean.

Mauritius weather in June

The weather in Mauritius in June is quite similar to May, although the temperature drops considerably toward the end of the month (it can sometimes drop to 12 degrees Celcius in the central region). Again, you’ll be able to take advantage of cheaper hotel rates.

The weather in June is also great for hiking. Just remember to pack a light cardigan if you’re planning to hike in the central region as it does get a bit chilly and rainy on certain days.

Mauritius weather in July

The weather in July normally offers bright sunny days and a lower chance of rain compared to the summer months although I’ve noticed that it’s been raining a lot more than usual in 2022 and 2023.

The east and southeast regions tend to be very windy in winter which is ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Hotels like Preskil Island Resort even offer kitesurfing lessons to beginner surfers.

On the other hand, if you get cold easily, you should avoid staying on the east and southeast coasts. Accommodations like La Mariposa in the west or Trou aux Biches Beachcomber in the north would be much more ideal.

Mauritius weather in August

Similar to the previous months, the climate in Mauritius in August is nice but quite windy in the east and southeast. You’re also more likely to experience rain in these regions compared to the north and west, so keep that in mind when deciding where to stay.

From what I’ve observed, it usually rains in the morning for less than 30 minutes but the weather tends to get better throughout the day.

Mauritius weather in September

The weather in September is cool and sunny on most days (although you might experience light rain on c certain days which normally lasts about 30 minutes).

September in Mauritius is also your last chance to take advantage of lower hotel rates before the high season kicks in.

Mauritius weather in October

If you’re wondering when to visit Mauritius for the best weather, I recommend going in October, especially if you’re planning to spend a lot of time outdoors. It’s definitely the best time to visit Mauritius Island!

As one of the driest months of the year, the weather will be perfect for hiking at Le Morne Brabant , Le Pouce mountain , or Gris Gris beach .

Hotel rates will start to increase slightly but not as much compared to November and December.

What’s also great about visiting Mauritius in October is that you’ll also get the opportunity to experience the Diwali festival (note that Diwali may sometimes take place in November).

Mauritius weather in November

In terms of weather, November is one of the best months to go to Mauritius. As the temperature starts to rise, you can expect bright sunny days with minimal rainfall.

Just keep in mind that hotel rates will go up, at times twice as much compared to September and October.

Update : Unfortunately, the weather in November 2023 has been quite bad with lots of rain which is very unusual. Hopefully, November 2024 will be better.

Mauritius weather in December

December is one of the busiest months of the year and hotels are usually filled up. This is why it’s important to book hotels and tours well in advance if you’re planning to visit Mauritius in December.

As the weather gets hotter, you might experience some rain towards the end of the month. Although rare, the country might also be hit by cyclones in December.

Right now, the temperature is already starting to rise so by September, the weather will be much nicer with less chance of rain. Ile aux Cerfs is located in the southeast so a bit windy in September but still enjoyable. As for Rodrigues Island, the weather is similar to Mauritius. Hello, the east can be a bit windy between July and September but it’s not super windy like in Iceland for example. If you’re coming from a cold region you should be fine as the temperature along the coast rarely drops below 20 degrees Celcius. If you’re planning to explore the country extensively, I would suggest staying in two different hotels so you don’t spend a lot of time and money driving around the country. Delightful Mauritius

Stay in four different areas on this trip - first the South Coast, then the West Coast, then Chamarel in the center of the island, before spending the last few days relaxing on the beach of the popular North Coast. Mauritius has so much more to offer than just gorgeous beaches!

The island has two seasons : a hot, wet and humid summer (October to April), with a slight risk of cyclones from January to March, and a warm, dry winter (May to September). Average temperatures range from around 25°C in summer to 20°C in winter. Average annual rainfall is 2010mm, most of which falls in summer.

As Mauritius is best known for winter sun, the peak season for tourism is from October to April and low season runs from May to September. Rodrigues’ peak tourist seasons are from the end of November to February, around Easter in April and from the end of June to August; outside of these times beach restaurants are often closed and only a few tables d’hôtes are open. The cooler, drier months from June to September, with fewer mosquitos, are good for outdoor activities; clear, calm and warm waters from November to April are ideal for diving; the best deep-sea fishing is from October to April; and surfing conditions are at their best from June to August.

Note that the west and north coasts are warmer and drier than the east and south coasts. In the summer, the cooling southeast trade winds make the east coast pleasant and perfect for watersports, but the south and east can be chilly and windy in winter. The north and west coasts are more sheltered in winter, meanwhile, but can get stiflingly hot and humid in summer. Most rain falls in the highlands, with Curepipe the rainiest of the inland towns.

Mauritius is a multicultural society, with religious festivals for the different groups held year-round. Dates vary annually depending on religious calendars. Visitors are welcome to attend any of the major public festivals, and it may be worth timing a visit to coincide with one of the more spectacular ones listed below.

February/March. Grand Bassin. The biggest Hindu festival outside India, devotees make a pilgrimage to the island’s sacred lake to leave offerings to Shiva.

9 September. Sainte Croix, Port Louis. Mauritians of all faiths make a pilgrimage to Catholic apostle Pere Laval’s tomb on the anniversary of his death to pray for miracles at his graveside.

23 October. Island-wide. The annual Festival of Light celebrates the triumph of good over evil: fairy lights and candlelight guide good fortune to Mauritian Hindus’ homes and sweet cakes are offered to the ancestors.

6 November. Plaine Verte, Port Louis. Muslims carry brightly lit lanterns or “ghoons” made of bamboo and paper to mourn the martyrdom of the prophet Mohammed’s nephew in Kerbala, Iraq.

November. Island-wide. Hindus bathe at public beaches and offer prayers, fruits and flowers to Ganga, the goddess of purity, during this auspicious month.

Festival Kreol

28 November–1 December. Le Morne Village. This annual celebration of Creole culture held in Le Morne Village features food and craft stalls, traditional songs and séga dancing (festivalkreol.co.uk).

Eid-ul-Fitr

November/December. Mosques island, wide. The end of Ramadan and fasting for the island’s Muslims is celebrated with prayers and feasting with friends and relatives.

December–February. Temples island-wide. After ten days of purification and praying, Tamil penitents walk across a pit of burning coals in certain temples across the island, before cooling their feet in milk.

Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate.

In the Indian Ocean, and therefore in Mauritius, there are two major seasons , each lasting six months:

• the Southern Hemisphere summer , spanning from November to April
• the Southern Hemisphere winter , from May to October.

Summer and winter in Mauritius are distinguished by a difference in temperature of a few degrees, and by the frequency of rainfall.

In summer , it’s very hot and the atmosphere is humid . Temperatures often exceed 30°C (86°F) and rainfall is quite common (especially between December and March). The sea is warm , up to 28°C (82°F). If you want to enjoy swimming and water activities, this is the ideal season.

In winter, temperatures are milder , varying between 23 and 26°C (73-78°F) depending on the region. This makes it more pleasant for walking and hiking. As for the sea, it is cooler and thus less conducive to swimming (speaking as someone who gets cold easily, but if you don’t mind, it’s still quite pleasant!).

Despite these two distinct seasons, the weather in Mauritius is more or less constant throughout the year. It is generally warm and sunny from January to December, even though there are periods that are rainier than others.

When is the cyclonic season in Mauritius?

Another very important factor to consider when planning your trip is the cyclone season in Mauritius, which lasts from January to March.

This season is characterized by high rainfall and significant cyclone risks . During a cyclone, winds are strong, the sea is rough, and it’s not possible to leave your accommodation for about 3 to 4 days.

During this particular season, there can be several cyclones in a row, spaced a few weeks apart. Their intensity varies from year to year. It’s also possible for no cyclones to hit Mauritius during the season.

My advice is if you want to explore the island, be active, and not end up stuck in your hotel, January to March is a period to avoid.

When it comes to accommodation prices , they of course vary depending on the season and this is also a criterion to consider for your upcoming stay.

Know that the period between October and May is considered the high season in Mauritius (which roughly corresponds to the summer period ). This is when prices are at their highest.

The low season ranges from June to September and allows you to benefit from lower hotel rates.

Travelling to Mauritius During the Austral Summer: November to April

From November to April, it’s the summer season in Mauritius. The atmosphere is warm and quite humid.

The average temperature varies between 26°C and 28°C , with peaks above 30°C in the hotter regions like the West.

As for the water temperature , it hovers between 26°C and 28°C in the lagoon.

From November to December, the rain is fairly moderate. It’s between January and April when the precipitations are the most frequent and significant. During this period at the start of the year, there’s also a high risk of cyclones .

If you want to visit Mauritius during the summer , the months of November and December are the most suitable: you avoid the heavy rains and enjoy still bearable temperatures.

The months of January, February, and March are the hottest and rainiest . The atmosphere can be stifling, especially on the West coast and in the North where there is little breeze. Avoid this period if you’re sensitive to high heat and the humid tropical climate.

The Best Activities to Do

In Mauritius’ summer, the best thing to do is to enjoy the warm waters of the ocean !

It’s the ideal season to discover the full potential of the most beautiful Mauritian beaches , with their white sand and turquoise sea.

Indulge in swimming in the crystal-clear water at 28°C , and sunbathing on the fine sand in a paradisiacal setting! (But beware, the sun is strong so don’t expose yourself without sun protection ).

During the austral summer, you can also try various water sports offered in Mauritius such as:

The main advantage of visiting Mauritius in November, December, January, February, or March is certainly the delightfully warm water temperatures.

Those who love the heat and wish to swim will appreciate this season where the waters are warm, making swimming and diving all the more comfortable.

During summer in Mauritius, another advantage is that everything is open : the water sports agencies and the sea cruises.

(Except during cyclone periods , of course, when everything is closed until the storm passes. As I mentioned, if you don’t want to risk being stuck indoors for several days, it’s better to avoid Mauritius between January and March.)

Among the main disadvantages of visiting Mauritius in summer, the hot and humid atmosphere can make nature walks challenging. Between the oppressive heat, mosquitoes, and rains that make the trails slippery, it’s not the best time if you want to go hiking in Mauritius.

You should also be aware that in summer, the accommodation prices are higher than the rest of the year and they get booked up quickly . If you plan to visit Mauritius during the southern summer, I recommend that you book your accommodations as far in advance as possible .

Visiting Mauritius in Winter: May to October

In winter in Mauritius, the temperatures are milder and the weather is sunny . The thermometer reads between 22 and 26°C depending on the region, and the atmosphere is much drier than in the height of summer.

From May onwards, there is a noticeable decrease in rainfall . The months of September and October are the driest .

The months of July and August are the coolest of the year, with temperatures fluctuating between 22 and 24°C. In the evenings, it’s nice to have a light sweater or cardigan!

The sea temperature starts to cool down towards the end of April. From an average of 28°C, it drops to 26-27°C in May-June and down to 24°C from July to October. Which is still very pleasant for swimming!

Visiting Mauritius between May and October ensures you enjoy pleasant temperatures, little rainfall, and no excessive heat.

Best Activities to Do

Mauritius is well-known for its beaches but is also an unmissable nature destination . Its tropical forests , wild gorges , and waterfalls are just a few of the wonders to discover during your stay.

The southern winter is indeed the perfect season for hiking and nature walks.

Among the most beautiful hikes to do in Mauritius I recommend:

Of course, between May and October, you’ll also have the pleasure of enjoying the paradisiacal beaches of Mauritius .

It will even be more pleasant than in summer for those who do not like the intense heat. You also avoid the heavy rains and will have a dryer weather .

However, the water is cooler during this season, so those who are sensitive to cold (like me!) might enjoy swimming a little less.

Personally, I love Mauritius in June and October . Not only are the temperatures mild , but there’s also fewer tourists than the rest of the year. If you want to avoid the crowds , these are the two months to choose for your stay.

Mauritius in July and August is also very pleasant in terms of weather (these are sunny and dry months). But, as you may guess, the beaches and tourist spots are quite crowded.

Another advantage of visiting Mauritius in winter is the savings made on accommodation budget , since lodging prices are lower than in the high summer season.

As for the disadvantages of winter in Mauritius, the main one is that, if you want to swim, you might find the sea a bit cool .

In my opinion, November and December are the best months for swimming in Mauritius.

The lagoon waters are deliciously warm and there’s no cyclonic weather yet that could make the sea rough.

Between May and October , you can also enjoy swimming but in slightly cooler waters.

If you want to swim and do some watersports during your stay in Mauritius, avoid the period between January and March.

And if you want to go scuba diving in Mauritius , the recommended time is from September to April .

Hiking enthusiasts should travel to Mauritius between the months of May and October to benefit from the ideal climate: mild temperatures and dry weather .

Hiking is a must-do activity in Mauritius to discover its tropical forest, waterfalls, and mountain areas rich in biodiversity.

If you want to enjoy less crowded trails, I recommend avoiding the peak tourist season and favoring the months of May-June or October .

Plan ahead if you want to experience the best of the weather on this indian ocean island – and don’t want to miss those vibrant festivals.

A verdant, teardrop-shaped isle off the east coast of Madagascar, volcanic Mauritius rightly tops holidaymaker bucket lists thanks to its pristine beaches, raw mountainous wilds and rainbow culture. Despite easy, direct-flight access from the UK, for many people a visit to this tropical idyll will be a once-in-a-lifetime break — so it pays to time the trip just right. Whether you want to fly and flop when the weather is at its most reliably balmy or are hoping to snag a lower-season deal (ideal for enjoying the island’s many inland activities), read on to discover the best time to touch down.

When is the best time to visit Mauritius?

Many people associate Mauritius with year-round sun, but visitors need to know where to go and when.

The island has its own rather feisty microclimate. It could be dry and sunny somewhere that’s only a few minutes away from a downpour, so you’ll need to be mindful of this and plan activities accordingly. The east coast and central plateau catch the lion’s share of the wet weather, while the more sheltered west coast is much drier.

In general, the period from June to September is cooler and drier. Then, from November until April, the country goes through its warm and humid summer, which can make conditions testy but not unbearable. Cyclone season officially starts on November 1 and doesn’t end until May 15 the following year.

A good rule of thumb is to aim for the east coast in winter (the Mauritian summer) and the northwest in summer (Mauritian winter).

When is peak season in Mauritius?

The island’s peak season is technically from November until April. While Mauritius has long been a favourite for winter sun, this is also the island’s wet season — we’re talking the middle of Mauritian summer. That said, October to December is popular with tourists for a reason: rain doesn’t stop play for long; downpours tend to fall in short bursts and the sky clears soon after. Resorts will be busiest and most expensive during these months, with some rates doubling over new year.

When is the cheapest time to travel to Mauritius?

For cheaper prices, travel during the northern hemisphere’s summer. July and August , for example, fall into Mauritius’s winter season and is a comparatively cooler time of the year — average temperatures of around 24C — with fewer mosquitoes, lower humidity and relatively little rain. Just stay on the sheltered parts of the island; the island’s north and west coasts will be warmer and much less windy.

When is the best season for surfing in Mauritius and where should I go?

Mauritius is well known for its water sports — everything’s up for grabs, from diving schools to parasailing competitions. But the island’s famous trade winds make it especially good for surfing, and it makes sense to chase them.

In summer, head to the east coast, where the cooling southeast winds make it particularly pleasant, and opt for the north and west coast in winter. There are a few places that are particularly popular with surfers. The jewel in the crown is Tamarin Bay, on the west coast, but it can be inconsistent; sometimes the waves don’t break for months at a time. The experienced should head to One Eye — named for the “eye” that’s allegedly visible in the jagged rock face when surfers ride a perfect wave — over at Le Morne.

Sunshine and rainfall

Mauritius’s year-round sunshine and microclimate doesn’t lend itself to extremes; temperatures generally sit between 17C and 31C. January, February and March are the hottest and wettest months of the year, averaging 30C and 253 mm of rainfall.

Key dates for your calendar

Few things reflect Mauritius’s unique and impressive cultural diversity better than its spectacular religious festivals, many of which are island-wide and welcome visitor participation. Keep in mind that, though safe and friendly, Mauritians are quietly conservative and tourists should dress modestly if joining any of the celebrations. Also, if a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many will take the day in between off, as well as the adjoining weekend — this is called faire le pont (making a bridge).

January/February

One of the most vibrant festivals in Mauritius, the Chinese New Year celebrations are a sight to behold. Signalling the start of the Chinese Spring Festival — as well as three days of food, festivities and parades — a huge fireworks display lights up the sky to ward off evil spirits and is followed, 15 days later, by a beautiful lantern festival. Head to Port Louis for the focus of the action.

Maha Shivaratri, the spectacular three-day Hindu pilgrimage at the end of February, is an important occasion on Mauritius. Grand Bassin, watched over by a 33m (108ft) statue of Lord Shiva, is considered a holy lake for Mauritian Hindus — its waters are said to be an offshoot of the spiritually important River Ganges. The festival attracts people from all over the world.

Few celebrations are as instantly recognisable as Holi — the joyful Hindu festival of colours that marks the beginning of spring — and Mauritius goes all in. While water pistols are aimed and brightly coloured powder thrown (be aware that, as with snowballs, everyone is fair game), this is a day, scheduled annually by the lunar calendar, that’s all about strengthening community. Delicious street food and feelgood music keep the party going.

On Mauritius, Thimithi — a Tamil Hindu festival also known as “The Walk on Fire” — is celebrated by Hindus and non-Hindus alike during the Tamil calendar month of Aippasi (roughly around November, though this can change). Held in honour of Kali, the Hindu goddess of power, a ten-day meditating and fasting period is brought to a close by devotees ceremonially walking on burnt embers, and is one of the most-watched cultural events on the island. Another Tamil Hindu festival, Thaipoosam Cavadee, which takes place a few months later, is also spectacular; it involves more fire-walking, as well as sword-climbing and piercing rituals.

• Aapravasi Ghat and the Le Morne Cultural Landscape are both deserving of your time.

Visiting Mauritius in February

There are less people around and a good probability of rain, making for a quiet day on the island. In February, you can expect an average of 86 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 72 degrees Fahrenheit at night. There is still a danger of cyclones, and the humidity is quite high.

• Reserve a spot for a relaxing massage by the sea.
• Indulge in some much-needed R&R in a plush villa by the water.

Visiting Mauritius in March

March follows the pattern of hot, humid, and damp weather. Although cyclone risk is lower than in February, it still exists. It’s a balmy 82 degrees in the water right now. With the Holi celebration, people of Indian descent all over the world celebrate the arrival of spring.

• Go deep-sea fishing for the first time.
• Have a good time at one of Grand Bay’s many bars or eateries.

Visiting Mauritius in April

In this, the final month of summer, temperatures have begun to dip. April has a small amount of rain from brief thunderstorms but very few cyclones. The island’s driest regions are in the north and west.

Visiting Malawi in May

With dry, bright weather and fewer tourists, May is a great time to visit Mauritius. Daytime highs are around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the humidity is bearable. There’s a risk of showers, but they’ll likely be brief and light.

In August, many people take vacation time and flock to the beaches. Among the greatest seasons to visit Mauritius is in August, when temperatures are mild and the humidity is low. Temperatures often peak in the 74°F to 77°F range, while lows average in the 61°F to 64°F range.

In September, Mauritius’s weather begins to warm up again. Highs this month average around 76 degrees Fahrenheit, while lows rise gradually to a still comfortable 66 degrees as the trade winds gradually weaken.

Being a sub-tropical island, we do not have monsoon or rainy season. In summer, it can rain heavily in the afternoon due to the built up of humidity. Another culprit are the cyclones that can affect the weather between December to March. So it’s always good to plan accordingly. For starters, Summer is between November to March and Winter is between June – August

Summer is the warmest of the year with an average overnight temperature of 25 degrees and a daytime temperature average of 30 degrees. Traditionally it’s a very busy period for locals and visitors alike, with swimming, barbecues and water activities proving to be a popular pastime. Summer maximum can reach as high as 34 degrees with an average of 80% humidity, so please be prepared.  It is the high season for cyclones, with weather anomalies mostly appearing at this period of the year. Summer rain, most of the time going for an hour or two in the afternoon is quite normal but expect them. Summer in Mauritius is when the most visitors come, so expect a crowd at popular beaches. Summer in the Indian ocean is also the cyclonic season. It can happen that cyclones end up ruining some of your days, but they normally hang around for a few days. A great time for hiking and camping with waterfalls at their peak.  However, this is the whale season in full swing and they travel along the west and north coast. Best season to see the whales in Mauritius. It can become windy to very windy along the South East and South coast with wind speeds averaging 27 kilometres/hour, making it a mecca for kitesurfers. Regular and powerful waves from the South make it one of the best surfing holiday of the year. Waves reaching 6m high are often seen at the world renown spot of One Eye at le Morne. Many kite surfers and wind surfers return annually to Le Morne for the flat shallow waters in the protected lagoon with plenty of wind. With calm shallow water extending our several hundred metres, Mauritius is perfect for the novice trying to learn to windsurf or kite surf in a warm tropical weather.

We are officially in winter. The good news is, in Mauritius  winter is sunny  and still warm during the day. At night it can get quite chilly because of the high humidity levels, especially at higher altitudes (centre of the island). If you’re on the coast, you can still enjoy sunny days at the beach. In the end of June, it tends to get quite windy on the eastern and south-eastern coasts. Le Morne and Belle Mare lagoon are amazing windsurfing spots during this period.

It is among the best months for  kitesurfing  and windsurfing, especially on the east coast. Understanding Mauritius’ Seasons for an Ideal Visit

Rainy Season (November to April) : This period is marked by significant rainfall, especially from January to April. Leheilleix notes, “If you’re visiting Mauritius from November to April, expect more rain than in other months.” The summer months, particularly from December to February, also coincide with the cyclone season, potentially bringing torrential rain and cyclones.

The Summer Heat : Summer in Mauritius, extending from November to April, experiences extreme heat with temperatures ranging from 82°F (28°C) to 97°F (36°C). The humidity, often around 80%, makes the heat feel more intense. “It’s really hot, and the humidity makes you feel so uncomfortable,” Leheilleix comments.

Winter Months (May to October) : Leheilleix’s favorite time in Mauritius is the winter season. “The temperature is much more bearable, and you can still enjoy sunny days,” she says. During these months, the ocean temperature drops slightly, making water sports like surfing, kite surfing, and wing foiling more enjoyable.

Optimal Time for Water Sports : For enthusiasts of windsurfing, kite surfing, or wind foiling, Leheilleix recommends visiting in the winter months, particularly from June to September. “That’s when you get the wind, and honestly, places like Le Morne are among the best in the world for these sports,” she adds.

Regional Weather Variations : Mauritius has regional weather variations, with the center of the island (Moka, Floreal, Curepipe region) being the coolest and the west coast (Flic-en-Flac, Tamarin region) being the hottest and driest.

During the winter, it is relatively dry, whereas in the summer there can often be heavy precipitation and tropical storms. The temperature on the coastal areas varies between 71°F in winter and 93°F in summer. The sea temperature varies between 71°F and 81°C. The best time for diving is between November and April, when the sea is at its calmest. The North and West coasts are the best areas for diving enthusiasts as these are the most sheltered.

This Indian Ocean island is located in the tropics in the Southern Hemisphere. As well as a tropical climate (leading to year-round warm temperatures and a distinct wet and dry season), its seasons are largely the opposite of our own, although there are only two distinct seasons. Summer runs from November to April and winter from May to October. The higher temperatures of summer coincide with the region’s rainy season while the cooler months tend to be drier. As Mauritius is a small island in such a far-flung location, it is often hard to forecast the weather, particularly in the long term. The topography also causes a number of microclimates – it could be beautifully sunny where you are but raining up the road. Here’s our month-by-month guide to Mauritius’s weather and climate.

Mauritius in January January is one of the warmest months in Mauritius and with that, it is often one of the wettest. Although it is relatively rare, the island can be affected by cyclones. Saying that, the summer is a great time to visit if you are seeking an escape from the colder weather at home. Mornings tend to start off sunny allowing you to enjoy the beautiful beaches and warm sea temperatures. Localised rain and thunderstorms tend to build up in the afternoon creating the perfect time to make use of your resort’s spa or other indoor facilities.

Mauritius in February Similar to January, the weather in Mauritius in February is warm and often rainy. However, as is often the case in tropical countries, the rain is usually short lived, lasting no more than a couple of hours. While it is possible to dive at any point during the year in Mauritius, it is the summer months that are the most popular. The warm water draws the vibrant marine wildlife to the reefs and coral gardens that surround the island.

Mauritius in March The average temperature remains the same as it is in January and February, at a very pleasant 30 degrees Celsius. Rainfall amounts are still relatively high but again, the heavy showers are usually short and sharp. The Hindu festival of Holi takes place in March and it is widely celebrated in Mauritius. People take to the streets during the second day of the festival and they are covered with vibrantly coloured powder.

Mauritius in April April in Mauritius marks the end of the summer and a reduction in the amount of precipitation. This is particularly the case towards the end of the month. It is a great time to spend on the beach and in the sea as the water has been warmed over the summer. There may still be heavy showers throughout the month, however these are fewer and further between and the humidity levels are starting to fall as the dry season approaches.

Mauritius in May Although officially the start of winter, it’s not quite winter as we know it! Daytime temperatures hover around the mid-20s while at night they can drop to 18 degrees Celsius so you may need a light long-sleeved top for the evenings. The days are largely sunny and the sea remains relatively warm, particularly off the north of the island.

Mauritius in June Throughout June, the Mauritius climate starts to cool and the south east trade winds start to increase in strength. The winter is perhaps not the best time for a stay on the island’s east or south coasts as these are most affected regions. However, many of the resorts on the east coast have been designed with the wind in mind with plenty of sheltered spots to enjoy the largely sunny days. During June you can make the most of some great-value offers

Mauritius in July Although the temperatures are not cold when compared with a European winter, if you want to catch the best of the weather, you should head to the north of the island during the winter months. July is one of the coolest months of the year – don’t be surprised if you see islanders wearing a coat but remember, everything is relative!

Mauritius in August While it is officially the dry season, the island is sometimes affected by anti-cyclones between June and September. These weather systems can bring cooler temperatures, heavy rains and increased wind and they last for just a couple of days. Strong winds are still affecting the east coast during August, however the resorts on the north west coast are popular for family holidays during the school break.

Mauritius in September The temperature starts to increase again in September as do the hours of sunshine making September a good time to visit Mauritius. Together with October and November, this month is one of the driest. The weather favours the west and north coasts still, especially during the first half of the month.

Mauritius in October When asked what the best time to visit Mauritius is, locals will probably say October. Both land and sea temperatures continue to rise and the climate is largely dry. This warm and dry period coincides with the half term break making the island a fantastic time setting for a family holiday.

Mauritius in November An increased number of sunshine hours and beautifully warm temperatures characterise the Mauritius weather in November. As summer approaches the humidity increases, as does the amount of rainfall, particularly towards the end of the month. What you can be sure of is a lovely warm break from the cooling temperatures at home.

Mauritius in December December marks the beginning of summer and the wet season. Humidity levels and rainfall amounts increase. The draw of a tropical Christmas and New Year is always a strong one making this one of the busiest periods on the island. We recommend booking your holiday in good time to avoid disappointment.

One of the most beautiful islands in the world, Mauritius is the sort of multi-dimensional destination that’s as perfect for families as it is for couples on honeymoon, and just about anyone in between. 

Part of its considerable charm is entirely natural: Mauritius rises from the Indian Ocean like a vision. You can easily imagine how early seafarers must have felt when spotting its beaches and palm trees, forests and mountains, reefs and wild horizons.

Mauritius was also a prototype for multifaceted island tourism, combining the escapist notion of a luxury resort by the sea with rich cultural depth beyond the resort gates. As well as the beaches, you can dive into Mauritius' intriguing historical back-story, unique conservation success stories and sizzling hot culinary experiences.

Dive the West Coast

A stunning lagoon surrounds Mauritius, and these shallow waters are beautifully picturesque in their own right and offer spectacular diving at the reefs on the lagoon rim. Along Mauritius’ west coast, the waves break out near the horizon and the drop-off where the lagoon meets the open ocean is a world of underwater cliffs, populated by an astonishing array of marine life. Flic en Flac is the starting point for many of the best dives, including La Cathédrale, a fine spot to see scuttling lobsters.

Live in the moment on Rodrigues

One of Mauritius' most remote quarters, Rodrigues feels like it occupies a different time and space from the mainland. Life here is focused on the pleasure of day-to-day living and connecting with the land and the people who live full-time in this peaceful outpost. Spend your days taking boat trips to outlying islands, communing with giant tortoises, perusing the Saturday market at Port Mathurin, or diving and snorkeling off the south coast or around La Passe St François. While there’s plenty to do here, a big part of Rodrigues’s charm comes from something altogether simpler: the joy of just being here.

Hike the Black River Gorges

In the forested interior of Mauritius, Black River Gorges National Park is a precious and protected wilderness barely half an hour from the beach. Its dense forest is home to many native species of flora and fauna, including three endangered bird species: the Mauritius kestrel, the echo parakeet and the pink pigeon. As you hike through forests and past waterfalls, watch out for white-tailed tropicbirds flying high above the gorges or pink pigeons by the trail.

Head to the mountains of Chamarel

Of all the excursions away from the coast, a trip to Chamarel is one of the most rewarding days out in Mauritius. High in the hills and with glorious views down towards the coast in places, Chamarel has an emerging culinary reputation thanks to a growing number of casual family-run dining rooms and fine-dining restaurants hidden away among the trees. Other reasons to come include the famous colored sands of Terres de 7 Couleurs , Mauritius’ quirky museum of illusions and the Rhumerie de Chamarel , a fascinating, eco-friendly rum distillery.

Explore an untouched wilderness on Île aux Aigrettes

On the edge of the lagoon just off Mauritius’ pristine southeastern coast, Île aux Aigrettes offers a vision of the ancient and wild Mauritius that greeted early explorers. The old-growth ebony forest here is a reminder of how the whole of the main island appeared before the arrival of European colonists in the 16th century. Restored as part of a government-backed conservation project, the forest today shelters all manner of endangered bird and other wildlife species – be careful not to trip over a Mauritian giant tortoise! 

Relax on the beautiful beaches

The beaches for which Mauritius is famed encircle the island like a garland. All of the resorts have them, but there's so much sand around that you’re never far from a peaceful public beach where you can share the sea with picnicking local families rather than hordes of visiting tourists. The richest choices lie along the east coast, but southern beaches are quieter and wilder and the west coast is far better for those looking for activity out on the water.

Diversity is a defining feature of Mauritian life, and the island's cultural melting pot really comes alive in the island’s culinary story. Indian, Chinese, Franco-Mauritian and Creole influences come together in Mauritian kitchens – dining here is at once a genuine pleasure and a globe-trotting adventure. The island boasts world-renowned chefs and endless places to sample local delicacies and staples. If we had to pick one place to try, it would be the stellar home-style cooking of chef Marie-Ange at informal Restaurant Le Barbizon in Chamarel.

Learn about unusual botany at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens

There are times in Mauritius when it seems as if the wild tangle of tropical vegetation is visibly growing larger before your very eyes. Nowhere is this truer than in the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens at Pamplemousses, originally founded as the vegetable garden for the nearby Mon Plaisir Château in 1735. The garden has expanded considerably from its original footprint – the stars of this gargantuan show are the giant Victoria amazonica water lilies and soulful giant tortoises, but there is so much unusual botany to turn the head that you'll need a few hours to explore.

Imagine the past at Mauritius' historic mansions

Uninhabited until the Dutch took possession of the islands in 1598, Mauritius was at various times, a colony of the Dutch, French and British, before gaining independence in 1968. Under European rule, giant sugar and tea estates filled every available pasture of the Mauritian interior, and watching over these prized plantations were French-style colonial mansions, which today are some of the Indian Ocean's greatest architectural treasures.

Like mini chateaux adapted to the tropics, these stately homes have gorgeous gardens, high ceilings, ornate verandas and cantilevered windows to catch the breeze. Check out the Eureka Mansion in Moka or Château Labourdonnais near Pamplemousses, for fine examples of the style.

Have the ultimate resort experience

If the main reason you’re traveling here is for some relaxing downtime by the water, the beach resorts of Mauritius have few peers. Some resorts are the height of exclusivity – if you’re staying at one of these lavish properties on a honeymoon or luxury break, you may never want to leave the resort grounds. Other resorts cater wonderfully well for families, with kids clubs, water sports and more. It doesn’t matter which secluded corner of the island you head to, there'll be abundant resorts to choose from. Expect large and luxurious rooms, multiple swimming pools, ample gardens, world-class restaurants, organized activities and perhaps a no-indulgence-spared spa.

Meander the Rodrigues Coastal Walk

Rodrigues already feels like the end of the earth, but the coastal walk from Graviers to St François just confirms it. There’s nothing to interrupt the views over the ocean to the distant horizon, save for the occasional cloud or passing seabirds and the silence has to be experienced to be believed. Best of all, it’s the only way to reach Trou d'Argent , which surely must be Mauritius prettiest beach.

Look for whales & dolphins

If east coast Mauritius is known for its resorts, the west coast is all about getting out on and under the water. Spinner or bottlenose dolphins are frequently sighted in the lagoon off Tamarin , and you can avoid the free-for-all by going to see them with Dolswim , who follow strict rules to ensure the dolphins are not disturbed. From July to October or November, humpback whales migrate down through the open ocean off the west coast and can be spotted breaching beyond the lagoon.

Sample seafood by the sand

Global culinary influences and celebrity resort chefs are one thing, but there’s no finer dining experience in Mauritius than grabbing a table at a beachfront shack in Trou aux Biches on the north coast or St Francois in Rodrigues, and ordering the freshest Indian Ocean seafood imaginable. Take your pick from lobster, prawns, octopus, grilled fish, calamari and more, and decide whether you want it served grilled or smothered in a red Creole sauce, then sit back and enjoy your seafood feast with a view.

Explore by boat for epic views from the water

Mauritius and remote Rodrigues may get all the attention, but there’s an often-missed archipelago of inner islands within a day’s boat trip of the main island. To the east are Île aux Deux Cocos and  Île aux Cerfs – crowded in parts, but offering some gorgeous quiet corners. Pretty Île aux Bénitiers lies off the west coast, and away to the north, there’s even more choice – Coin de Mire, Île Plate and Îlot Gabriel are all delightful. Combine exploring with time spent snorkeling and a picnic lunch, and you have one fine Mauritius day.  

Climbing Le Morne Brabant

Le Morne Brabant, the dramatic peak rising abruptly from the southwest shore of Mauritius, is a Unesco World Heritage-listed site. It served as a home for a group of people dubbed the Maroons, who escaped from slavery and took refuge on this once remote peninsula. Upon learning that a group of officers was heading to their camp, the Maroons leaped to their deaths rather than be captured again; legend has it that the officers were dispatched to inform the Maroons that slavery had been abolished. The tough but thrilling climb up this poignant peak offers views of most of Mauritius and a humbling monument commemorating the people who died.

Come to Mauritius for the Beaches, Stay for the Best Cuisine You’ve Never Heard Of

Obviously, there are all the draws that accompany the world’s warmest ocean: white sand, turquoise waters, cocktails, and sunsets that look like they come with a built-in Instagram filter. Nobody has ever complained about Mauritius not being pretty enough. But when you step away from the swaying palms and sun-soaked beaches, even just for a day, it's clear that it’s so much more than just another tropical getaway . Come for the unforgettable scenery, sure, but then definitely stay for the immersive art installations, fruit wine , and  dim sum .

Best places for first timers to visit in Mauritius

Starting at the top of the island, the northern coast is home to the village of Grand Baie. It’s one of the most tourist-friendly areas of Mauritius since it’s highly developed with plenty of nightlife and shopping options. Plus, it's one of the hottest and sunniest regions of the island, even during winter. So if you’re looking for a beach vacation, the coastline from Pointe aux Piments to Grand Gaube is a great choice—especially if you want to get some sunshine in the cooler months between May and July.

Meanwhile, the eastern coast of Mauritius is less developed than other regions but has plenty of beautiful lagoons and white sand beaches. It’s not as touristy as the north and west coasts, making it a good choice for those who prefer a more local experience. Keep in mind that it can get quite windy there, which is great for either sailing during the winter or staying cool in the summer.

That brings us to western Mauritius, which is where you will get the most incredible sunsets. This coast also includes the capital city of Port Louis, along with the more luxury-focused suburb of Balaclava, which is where you’ll find plenty of upscale hotels. If you want the quintessential white beaches and sunny weather that the island is known for, then the west coast is the safest bet. It’s considered to be one of the most picturesque areas of the island while also being fairly developed, so you won’t be short of options for shopping, transport, or places to stay. It’s also near most of the museums, so it’s the ideal spot for travelers who also want to understand the roots and history of the country they're visiting.

Where to eat and drink like a local

Mahebourg Market is a bit of a one-stop shop if you want to try local street foods without having to travel from place to place. Make sure you try the dholl puri (flatbread with curried split peas) and alouda, a refreshing drink made from algae as well as almond essence and condensed milk. Don’t forget to leave room for space for boulet—the Mauritian version of dim sum.

For a fancier affair, Le Fangourin Restaurant is in an incredible setting on a heritage site, surrounded by a century-old garden. Oh, and there’s also a giant and gorgeous pond (because Mauritians sure know how to do beautiful waterscapes), and a view of the mountains. It’s an upscale restaurant with refined dishes like lobster and chocolate parfaits, but which still celebrates local flavors—think smoked marlin, or fish cooked in a coconut sauce. Plus, the menu changes according to what’s in season, and features ingredients sourced from the nearby farm. What else could you want?

If you can, squeeze in a visit to Takamaka Wine Estate . Mauritius isn’t exactly prime grape-growing territory, thanks to the hot and humid climate, but why would that stop anyone? What it does have an abundance of is lychees, which the enterprising Alexander Oxenham has managed to turn into locally produce wines, including a surprisingly crisp Sauvignon-style white. And while you’re on the local booze train, it would practically be a sin not to sample the spirit of choice: Mauritian rum , which is distilled from locally grown sugarcane and molasses.

Museums, art, and culture in Mauritius

L’Aventure du Sucre is in the same spot as Le Fangourin, so there’s double the reason to visit. Once you’ve eaten your fill at the restaurant, wander over to check out the museum. It’s dedicated to the history and importance of sugar in Mauritius, from its colonial origins to its modern production. Mauritius has a long history of producing sugar, dating back to the 17th century. Sugar currently accounts for less than 10% of the country’s overall exports, but it’s been a defining part of the culture and identity of the Mauritian people for a long time.

If you’re the type that appreciates the creative side of things, it’s also worth a visit to the House of Digital Art , which is in the heart of a heritage district in St. Louis. This is the first art expo of its kind in the Indian Ocean region and is more than just a gallery; it offers workshops and residencies in addition to shining a spotlight on local creators. If you decide to go, set aside about two hours to work your way through the immersive experiences, which encompass very modern digital, kinetic, and sound installations that are all housed in an 18th-century building.

Another stop worth making in Port Louis is the Blue Penny Museum . Think of it as the Smithsonian of Mauritius, but housed in a pretty colonial building and boasting a quainter name. It's home to two of the rarest and most famous stamps in the world, which were issued in 1847 by the British colony of Mauritius and are probably the most valuable objects there today. You can also spend half an hour in The Marine Room, a collection of models, paintings, and artifacts dedicated to telling the maritime history of Mauritius.

While you’re still in Port Louis, make a stop at the Aapravasi Ghat museum . This UNESCO World Heritage Site commemorates the arrival of the first indentured laborers from India to Mauritius, after the abolition of slavery in 1835. Take a walk through the Immigration Depot, where the laborers were processed and housed before being sent to the sugar plantations. You can also check out the Beekrumsing Ramlallah Interpretation Centre, a collection of exhibits that tell the history and impact of the indentured labor system in Mauritius.

Nature and outdoor experiences in Mauritius

If you’re more into land adventures than water ones, Black River Gorges National Park  covers about 2% of the island’s surface. Located in the southwestern part of the Mauritius, it's a proper tropical paradise with lush green forests, waterfalls, rivers, as well as plenty of diverse wildlife. That includes everything from monkeys to the giant bat-like Mauritian flying foxes, which are now an endangered species. One can’t-miss site in the park is the Seven Colored Earth, where sand dunes make a rainbow of colors from brown to green and purple. The colors are caused by the decomposition of volcanic rock and the variation of temperature during the cooling process.

Mauritius hotels and other great places to stay

It's family-owned and the people there pride themselves on offering an experience that's more authentic than what's on offer at a big chain. It's a sustainability-minded hotel group run by locals who have done away with single-use plastics and work almost exclusively with small suppliers. Each of Attitude's eight properties offers something slightly different.

If you don’t believe all-inclusive properties should skimp on food, The Ravenala is probably going to be one of your top picks, although Lagoon Attitude might come in at a close second. Regardless of what you choose, the Attitude Hotels all offer the "dine around" concept, which means you’re not limited to buffets or one boring main restaurant. In fact, their flagship hotel has a staggering 17 bars and restaurants alone. There’s a poolside Indonesian-Chinese fusion restaurant with incredible noodles, a buffet with everything from pastries to paella, a riverside restaurant based on a Mauritian family home, and an adults-only Japanese spot right in the sand, to name but a few.

If all-inclusive isn’t your vibe, there are plenty of other options—Mauritius has attractive immigration laws, and as a result, has attracted plenty foreign investment in property. Many of these properties are available as really modern and well-equipped holiday rentals, which are great for big groups or longer holidays. It should be said though, that unless you’re based centrally in Grand Baie or have your own rental car to get to and from restaurants and grocery stores, all-inclusive is usually the better option. After all, what’s a beach view without a snack and piña coladas on tap?

What to know before you go to Mauritius

Best times of year to visit.

In summer (November to April), the temperature can hover anywhere from 77 to 91 degrees Fahrenheit, but keep in mind that it’s also very humid! This is also the rainfall season, and there can be heavy rainstorms from December to February. Often these are short lived—but if dry weather is a priority, it’s not the best time of year for you to visit.

On the opposite end of the seasonal scale, there’s winter (May to October), during which temperatures can range from 64 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, but the weather is generally dry with blue skies. The east coast can be windy, but the west coast generally offers good winter weather.

As with plenty of tropical destinations, spring (September to November) and fall (March to May) offer great weather and fewer crowds. If you had to pick, a great time to visit is around October and March, when the weather is warm but the risk of rain is fairly low.

One of the reasons Mauritius is so popular with French and South African tourists is the time zone. Mauritius Time (MUT) is nine hours ahead of New York and 12 ahead of California.

The time to plan trips has seemingly gotten earlier and earlier over the years. This is especially due to the increasing number of tourists. Bookings are getting filled up quicker, so planning early is wise. Early planning (and booking) for travel is a great way to ensure availability of top notch experiences and even better deals. 

Whether travelers want to have a quick domestic summer vacation or an extended international trip, there are certain times to plan. Traveling during the summer is internationally popular, so the amount of people trying to book the same things can be overwhelming. Since the summer is generally considered the universal high travel season it is wise for travelers to think ahead. To enjoy some of the best weather, affordable prices and top experiences travelers should plan summer vacations at certain times of the year. When To Plan Summer Vacations

If travelers are planning to have an extended stay in very popular places, the earlier they plan the better. The winter before their potential trip is a great time to start planning and looking at availability. Since summer is a popular time to travel, travelers may notice inflated prices going to some destinations during the popular season. Getting ahead of the spike in prices is a must for summer vacation. 

Early April is another great time to plan out a summer vacation trip. Mid spring, at the latest, is the ideal time to secure vacation plans for the summer. This time period will generally be a bit before the summer booking prices take effect. Although, it may be advisable to start planning up to a year in advance, usually about three months before a trip is okay for shorter trips with flexible dates. 

The Best Summer Prices

The sooner travelers buy their flight tickets the better. This is especially true for international travel. Procrastinating travel plans can cost travelers  hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Travelers can set up price alerts for flights, so that they can snag their ticket at the most ideal time. Checking price trends for particular airlines may be helpful as well. Whether a traveler is loyal to their favorite airline or they prefer to price hop, having the most up to date information will be helpful to plan a summer vacation. Confirming the cheapest month or week to visit a chosen destination for summer will also help planning. 

Airfare is generally cheaper in April (compared to months like May and June), so travelers may catch deals if they book their flight then. But for flights, travelers should be monitoring prices a few months ahead of their trip. By around one to two months before the planned vacation date, travelers should book their ticket. So, for summer travelers that are mindful about budget, this means between March and May are ideal at the latest. 

For accommodations, the ideal time to plan really depends on the destination and a traveler’s budget. Travelers should book hotels well ahead of time, so there is not a significant upcharge. But in general, it is wise to book a hotel about one to three months in advance. This early booking will give travelers a chance to have their pick of the best central accommodations. 

Foodies and adventure seekers may want to plan other things ahead of time as well. Booking reservations for top rated restaurants and exciting excursions may be a top priority for some travelers. One way to check in on availability is to call into a particular restaurant (or touring company) and ask when they typically are booked up. Reading reviews or reaching out for direct communication may help travelers gauge when they should schedule activities for their trip.

Saguaro National Park offers travelers an iconic slice of the Southwest

The park is home to the tallest cactus species in the country and a symbol of the Southwest, the saguaro, They’re particularly concentrated in the west district of the park, just outside Tuscon, Arizona.

“We like to call that one the Instagram side because you can literally go anywhere in the park, and there will be at least two or three dozen saguaros in the background of your photo,” said Cam Juárez, Community Engagement and Outreach coordinator and public information officer at the park.

Why is Saguaro National Park worth seeing?

“Saguaros are super special because they only exist in this part of the world the way they do,” said Juárez. “You can visit certain parts of Mexico, you can visit certain parts of central Arizona, but you’re never going to see them the way you see them here.”

They’re not the only scenic beauties in the biodiverse park. 

“Our peaks are in the neighborhood of around 9,000 feet,” Juárez said. Visitors can find aspen, pine and fir trees in its sky islands. “As you climb every few 100 feet down in elevation, you're experiencing different biomes all the way down to grasslands, to desert shrub, to basically just what you would imagine a desert to look like.”

Which side is better for Saguaro National Park?

The park is divided into east and west districts, which bookend Tucson. Tucson International is the closest airport.

“My favorite is the west district, just because I love seeing the saguaro. You're going to have 2 million, versus maybe a quarter million saguaros on the east side,” Juárez said. “But if you're a backcountry hiker and you want to hike long distances, the east district, Rincon Mountain District, is definitely better.” 

He noted the Arizona Trail , from the U.S.-Mexico border up to the Grand Canyon, goes right through the east district. 

Can I drive in Saguaro National Park?

Yes. There is a $25 vehicle entry fee for the park, which is cashless. 

Visitors can purchase passes online at Recreation.gov or at a park kiosk using a debit or credit card.

How long does it take to go through Saguaro National Park?

You could visit both sides of the park in one day but may be better off with two.

“If you only have one day, definitely take the Cactus Forest loop ,” Juárez recommended. Cactus Forest Drive is a scenic 8-mile roadway in the east district. The west district has a 5-mile Bajada Loop Drive.

What is the best time to visit Saguaro National Park?

Juárez called October and mid-November magical. That’s just before the park’s busiest time of year, which he said runs from after Thanksgiving through April.

“Two times a year, we see a lot of rainstorms,” he added. “We have our traditional summer monsoons, and we have our winter rains. As a bimodal desert, you're going to see different blossoms at different times of the year.”

He said monsoons amplify the park’s already magnificent sunsets.

“The different colors of red and yellows and golds, coupled with purple skies, it's just everything that you see on postcards,” he said. “It just comes alive.”

What does the saguaro mean to Native Americans?

“The Tohono O’odham have a very special relationship with the park. Their whole culture revolves around the saguaro cactus, or as they call it, the Ha:san ,” Juárez said. Tribal members may harvest the fruit for traditional uses with a special permit through the Interior Department and National Park Service. “The fruit is harvested as part of their traditional medicine, their traditional foods. A lot of ceremonial wines come from that.”

He said other tribes tied to the land include Pascua Yaqui Tribe and Gila River Indian Community .

What else should visitors know about Saguaro?

“I would love for people to know that Saguaro National Park is making a concerted effort to be conscientious of the fact that the representation matters,” Juárez said. “ Friends of Saguaro National Park , in conjunction with our team here, developed what's called the Next Generation Ranger program, and it's not just a paid internship. It's an opportunity for (interns) to gain experience and gain what's called the Public Land Corps credit opportunity, which will help us diversify not just race and ethnicity but also ability and gender …  so when you walk into Saguaro National Park, you're going to run into very knowledgeable, very experienced, diverse young people that are matching our country's identity.”

Nearly 45% of the Tucson population is of Hispanic or Latino heritage, according to the U.S. Census . Several park staffers speak Spanish, including Juárez. 

“It comes in handy because we're not just talking our friends to the south. We're talking all the way down to Central America and South America that are visiting national parks,” he said, adding that sometimes they’ll welcome visitors in Spanish. “You should see the look on people's faces. They're like, ‘Wow, you speak my language.’ I encourage all of my coworkers and staff people to make it a point to try to at least learn how to say welcome and hello in different languages.”

Best Time to Visit

Mauritius enjoys a relatively mild climate. Although temperatures are rather moderate throughout the year with occasional rainfall, the most pleasant times to visit the island are between the months of April and June and between September and December. As Mauritius is located in the southern hemisphere, the summer and winter months are opposite to seasons in Europe.

Seasons Summer: November to April

The weather is hot and humid during these months, with peaks in temperatures occurring in the months of December, January and February. Rainfall is abundant, especially on the central plateau. The highest rainfall normally occurs in the months of February and March. Daylight hours typically run from 5.30am to 7.00pm.

This is the best time for scuba diving – especially December through to March – and for deep-sea fishing. The cyclonic season extends right the way through from November to April. Most of the time, the cyclones manage to avoid Mauritius because of the small size of the island. However, if they come close enough, the bad weather may affect vegetation and certain wooden buildings. Please rest assured that beach resorts have been constructed in such a way as to be able to resist strong cyclonic winds.

Winter: May to October

The temperature is cooler during this season, and prevailing winds tend to blow over the island from the east and south-east. The lowest temperatures are felt in August (20°C on the coast). Daylight hours typically run from 6.45am to 5.45pm. This is the best season for surfing (June to August).

On the central plateau, which is some 600 metres above sea level, the average day temperature is between 20°C in August and 26°C in February. On the coast, the temperatures are higher by about three to five degrees. The northern and the western parts of the island are warmer and drier than the eastern and the southern regions.

A local’s travel guide to Austin: what to eat, see and do in three days

Standout spots include food truck parks, honky-tonk hangouts and Lady Bird’s wildflower sanctuary

A ustin has become one of the most popular places in the US to move to, and also to visit. Droves of people descend on the city in March for the South by Southwest tech, film and music festival and in the fall for the Austin City Limits music festival. And Austin is one of the top five destinations in the US for bachelorette parties. Don’t let the bachelorettes scare you away, though. Austin is a great place to spend a few days, so long as you do it like a local.

My family and I moved to Austin 12 years ago, after living in New York for many years. I’ve also lived in Washington DC , the San Francisco Bay Area and Philadelphia. Austin has a feel all of its own: it has a world-class music scene, great food that now goes well beyond Tex-Mex and barbecue, Texas history and fun shopping and museums – all with less hassle than bigger cities in the US.

Here’s my guide to a long weekend there. In addition to picks for adults, I’ve included some recommendations for families that our kids (now teenagers) have loved through the years. And I’m vegetarian, so I’ve chosen some of the city’s best veggie eats options. Don’t worry, my meat-eating wife made sure that I included great barbecue choices, too.

Day 1: Pool party & pickles

Start your day with a walk or run on the trail at Town Lake (it’s officially labeled on maps as Lady Bird Lake, but locals refer to it as Town Lake). This 10-mile (16km) trail on both sides of a dammed portion of Texas’s Colorado River (a different Colorado River than the bigger and more famous one) is tree-shaded, beautiful and one of Austinites’ favorite places to exercise. If you have time, walk through Zilker Park, which is right next to the trail. If you have kids, go to the new and very fun playground at Butler Park, complete with a splash pad just up the path from the playground.

Austin was one of the cities that started the food truck scene in the US several decades ago, and now there are more than 2,000 food trucks in the city. Some are located in trailer parks that have multiple truck options and picnic table seating. After your morning at Town Lake and Zilker Park, have lunch at the Picnic food truck park, or the nearby original location of local favorite Chuy’s (the Tex-Mex chain is now expanding throughout the US). Other great lunch options include Green Mesquite and Carpenters Hall .

In the afternoon, go for a swim at Barton Springs Pool . Open year-round, this massive basin measures three acres and is fed by underground natural springs. It’s open throughout the day, and it’s free before 8am and after 9pm.

Head back to your hotel or Airbnb for a rest, and then get ready for dinner. Tonight is casual: barbecue at Terry Black’s , or if you’re vegan, the food truck Rollin Smoke for a fantastic vegan barbecue sandwich made with baby portobello mushrooms, spicy slaw, barbecue sauce and pickles. It’s my favorite vegan barbecue sandwich in Austin (who says you can’t have barbecue if you’re veggie?), and it’s located in a food truck park with beautiful old trees shading the tables. Rollin Smoke has very good meat options, too (I’m told).

If you have young children, head to Phil’s Icehouse . They have burgers and a full playground where the kids can play before or after dinner. Just don’t put them on the spinning flower after the meal. And be sure to get some ice-cream after dinner at Amy’s Ice Creams , a longtime favorite of Austinites. Amy’s is located next to Phil’s, and it’s so good we had an Amy’s truck serve dessert at our wedding.

After dinner, head out to see some music at one of Austin’s many local music venues. One of our favorites is the Continental Club . There’s a main club downstairs and the intimate Continental Gallery upstairs, where you can see local musicians in a cozy space. Other great venues include C-Boy’s and the new Moody Amphitheater . For full local music listings on any night, check the Austin Chronicle . And if it’s summer, look to see if Blues on the Green has a free concert that night. If you have kids, take them to the free Rock the Park concert series, produced by local radio station KUTX.

Day 2: Breakfast tacos, books & bats

Start your day back at the lake with a rowing workout that’s almost, but not quite, on the lake. Rō Fitness is a local studio that has outdoor rowing classes by the water. It’s way more fun than working out at an indoor studio.

You’ll need fuel after your workout. Grab a breakfast taco at Veracruz or Tacodeli or Tamale House East . Breakfast tacos are an Austin staple (they are to Austin as bagels are to New York), and all three of these places have delicious options.

Today is a shopping day. Start out at BookPeople , one of the greatest bookstores in the US. It’s locally owned and independent, but the size of a superstore. BookPeople also dares to take a stand on issues, including being one of two bookstores that recently sued Texas state officials over a newly passed book ban law. It has an excellent kids section, and organizes live readings by kids’ authors.

After you’ve gotten your book fix, head across the street to Waterloo Records , one of the best record stores in the US. Waterloo carries new and used vinyl, CDs and merchandise from rock to jazz to local Texas music. For more shopping options, head over to the stores along South Congress Avenue and South First Street (including Roadhouse Relics , a neon art store and gallery that is one of our favorites), and if you want to go thrifting, our teens say Austin Pets Alive Thrift and Texas Thrift are the best.

After all of the shopping, it’s time for lunch. If you’re near BookPeople and Waterloo, head over to Soup Peddler, a local place for homemade soups, smoothies and fantastic grilled cheese sandwiches (trivia: Soup Peddler got its name because the founder started out delivering homemade soup by bike before opening full store locations). Or if you’re near South Congress and South First, go to the food trucks on South First or Underdog or Fresa’s .

As you’re heading back to rest up, grab an ice-cream at Amy’s, a gelato at Dolce Neve or cupcakes at Sugar Mama’s .

Some good dinner options for tonight include Loro , Suerte or Este . And if you’re looking for a vegetarian option, one of my favorite veggie restaurants is Bouldin Creek Cafe . It’s casual, with a great menu that includes vegan chips and queso. If it’s nice out, take a seat on the patio.

Tonight’s activity could be going to see the bats at the Congress Street Bridge. Austin has the largest urban bat colony in North America, and in season they live in one of the bridges that crosses the Colorado River (they migrate to Mexico in the cooler weather). Bat-watching is a lot more fun than you might imagine from horror movies (and these bats look more like birds than vampire bats). If you’re not in the mood for bats, head to the legendary Broken Spoke . Get there early for dance lessons, then hoof it at this classic Texas honky-tonk.

Day 3: Live oaks & Lady Bird wildflowers

It’s your last day in Austin, and it’s a good one for visiting a museum. Some of our favorites include the Bullock Museum to learn all about the history of our state (bonus fact: Texas was once its own country , and some people want it to be its own country again ). If you’re a fan of 1960s history, visit the excellent LBJ Presidential Library , which is the home of the 36th president’s papers. It has good exhibits on the US civil rights movement and 1960s US history in general. Another excellent museum option is the Blanton Museum of Art , or you could tour the Texas capitol (Austin is, after all, the capital of Texas). If you’re a nature fan, head to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center . And if you have kids, the Thinkery is an excellent children’s museum.

For lunch, it’s time for more barbecue (you’re in Austin, don’t fight it). Two terrific barbecue trucks are Mickelthwait and LeRoy and Lewis . And LeRoy and Lewis has another of my favorite vegetarian barbecue options: cauliflower burnt ends.

In the afternoon, head back to Town Lake. This time, get out on the water by renting a kayak, stand up paddleboard or paddle boat (a kid-friendly option). If you have time and energy for a drink, head over to the ABGB for happy hour. They have a great beer selection, lots of outdoor seating and local bands playing music.

For your farewell dinner, a few of our favorite restaurants that are a bit on the fancier end are Hestia , Uchi or the Lenoir wine garden, where dinner is served under live oak trees more than a hundred years old. And for a fantastic vegan option, go to Fabrik for a seven-course vegan tasting menu. You’ll need a reservation well in advance (they’re currently booking four to six weeks out). And for your final night in Austin, head out to another music venue. Or if you have kids, take them to the Austin favorite Peter Pan Mini Golf , which has been around for 75 years, or check Do512 Family for family events that are happening the dates you’re in town.

Question Time

When is the best time of year to visit austin.

There’s no dispute: it’s hot in the summer in Austin . A great time to visit is between October and May. From June through September, many days will be over 100F. If you’re here in the summer, spend lots of time at the Barton Springs pool.

Is Austin expensive?

Austin hotels can be expensive during big events like South by Southwest or the Formula One weekend. But for most dates, it’s less expensive than larger cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Will I need a car to get around Austin?

Most of the places that I’ve recommended are within walking distance from downtown. You can also rent bikes and scooters to get around. Austin’s public transportation is primarily through local buses, which can take you further out if needed. And car-share options are easy as well.
