How does this sound?

What is a driver assistance system?

Driver assistance systems relieve the driver of the task of driving, offer more comfort and increase safety. In an emergency, a driver assistance system can even take control of the car. Liability for the task of driving always remains with the driver.

Status Quo driver assistance systems

Currently, driver assistance systems act as practical support: Sensors capture information on – for example, speed limits – the distance to other vehicles and lane markings. Also, GPS and navigation system data feeds into the processing. Thanks to this data, audio signals or visual displays can warn against potentially hazardous situations.

However, there are already more advanced systems that not only warn you but also actively help you manage the vehicle if necessary or preferred. Some driver assistance systems brake, accelerate or perform active steering movements to avoid an accident or take the strain off the driver, for instance in critical or monotonous driving situations. Other systems assist you with maneuvering or parking.

Overview of driver assistance systems

Hill start assist Road sign recognition Emergency brake assist Steering and lane guidance assist Cruise control Distance control Speed limit assist Lane-change warning & lane-change assist Parking assist

How does hill start assist work?

You’ll certainly know this situation well: You’re driving up a hill and shortly before the peak, you need to stop. When starting with a manual gearbox, you press the clutch and take your foot off the brake to accelerate. What happens at this exact moment? You roll back. Hill start assist – or simply start assist – should prevent exactly this. When the driver disengages the brake, the rear axle secures the vehicle for a short time. When starting the driver assistant releases this once more.

Video

Benefits: This driver assistance system is certainly not indispensable for the safe operation of a vehicle as with sufficient experience you can avoid tricky situations yourself. The assistance system can nevertheless make starting on extreme gradients, or with an additional trailing load, more pleasant.

What added value does road sign recognition offer?

When you’re in slow-moving traffic it’s often difficult to devote your full attention to everything that is happening. The road layout, oncoming traffic, speed restrictions, what’s happening beside you as well as behind you: A driver has to bear all this in mind. Road sign recognition can relieve you from this with help of a camera system which scans road signs and represents the processed data on the display. Accordingly, the road signs are displayed directly on your screen. Often this system is contained within other driver assistance systems such as the right of way warner, the wrong way assistant or speed limit info.

Video

Benefits: For accurate results, the driver assistance system is able to take into account and process various data sources such as recognised road signs, navigation devices and current vehicle data. Road sign recognition offers you increased safety and comfort during your journey by providing you with information i.e. right of way rules. You can concentrate on the traffic better without having to constantly gaze at the forest of signposts.

How does emergency brake assist work?

Emergency brake assist warns about the risk of collision and, where appropriate, brings the vehicle to a complete stop before it results in a crash with an obstruction, a person or another vehicle. Sensors measure the current speed and distance of the car ahead or the static obstruction (e.g. a person). Depending on the system, cyclists can also be identified. Acoustic warning signals are complemented by visual displays. Prior to emergency braking the driver assistance system calculates the optimal braking power and the resulting necessary braking pressure. This computed pressure is, depending on the system, independently transmitted by the assistant into an automatic brake, or only then applied when you press the brake pedal. A further development of brake assist is avoidance manoeuvre assistance: In order to avoid a collision, this system actively supports the driver with an evasive manoeuvre.

Video

Benefits: Emergency brake assist offers many advantages: Drivers are often careless, distracted, find themselves in chaotic circumstances or underestimate the distance to the vehicle ahead. This brake assist can, at the very least, reduce the severity grade of certain types of vehicle collisions.

How does steering and lane guidance assist provide support?

Congestion, slow-moving traffic, and long, monotonous journeys are sadly not uncommon, especially on the highway. When this happens, you have to keep a steady hand and patiently follow the road, sometimes for long periods of time. In these situations, a steering and lane guidance assistant can help you keep your vehicle in the lane – at high speeds as well – and make the task of steering easier. Cameras detect the lane markings, thus guiding the driver assistance system to the boundaries of the lane you are driving in. A look beyond the borders of Europe shows just how much more advanced this technology has already become. In some countries, the BMW Driving Assistant allows drivers to cruise “hands-off” at speeds of up to 130 km/h.

Video

Benefits: Lane guidance assistants can relieve the driver from steering, offer a feeling of safety and, above all, make long motorway journeys more comfortable.

In what way does cruise control make driving easier?

Cruise control is also known as “Speed Control” and allows you to select your desired cruising speed. This often takes place in combination with distance control. Following activation the driver assistance system constantly maintains your chosen speed and therefore offers enhanced comfort during long-distances. Cruise control can electronically adjust the speed to the surroundings and appropriately adjust the engine power.

Video

Benefits: With this assistance system particularly long journeys are more relaxing, and you can concentrate on the traffic. In conjunction with distance control the driving comfort is further enhanced: This calculates the speed of the vehicle ahead and automatically alters your own speed.

What is distance control?

Distance control is also called Adaptive Cruise Control. With a pre-set desired speed this driver assistance system orientates to the vehicle ahead and automatically brakes or accelerates depending on the distance from the leading vehicle. This system has already been integrated into many modern vehicles. The applied sensors measure the current speed and the distance from the car ahead. If you find yourself in stop start traffic, the distance control takes over braking and start-up.

Video

Benefits: Above all, you can use distance control during long journeys in combination with the cruise control function in order to arrive at your destination much more relaxed and to rest your legs as you don’t need to continually press the pedals. You must of course still keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Besides comfort, distance control should also provide for greater safety during the journey.

What does the speed limit assist do?

This driver assistance system combines the distance control with speed limit recognition and can also called Speed Limit Assist. Speed limit assist superimposes information about the speed limit onto the display area. With the help of this assistant you can adapt the maximum speed of the vehicle to a particular limit. The system scans road signs with a camera. Software then processes all the data and combines this with the data from the navigation system. You can view this driver assistance system as additional “speed camera insurance” because, in supplementing cruise control and the distance controller, it recognises the respective speed limit and – in the latest design – also automatically adjusts.

Video

Benefits: According to research papers, around a quarter of accidents are due to speeding and the failure to maintain safe distances. Here, speed limit assist can increase your safety. Nevertheless, these systems do not absolve the vehicle operator of responsibility – they can however help to significantly reduce these numbers.

How does a lane-change warning work? Why use lane-change assist?

The lane-change warning can help you to safely execute a lane-change and support the view in the rear mirror and over the shoulder. Sensors monitor the area beside and behind your car, and they cover the notorious blind spot. If another car approaches your vehicle in the blind spot or is dangerously close and overlooked by the driver, the driver assistant recognises this and warns against changing lanes. This warning is made, for example, using flashing symbols in the side mirror and even with steering wheel vibrations or steering impulses. A further development is lane-change assist. This means you can change lanes automatically once you’ve set the indicator for a few seconds. In doing so, the system assesses whether there is another vehicle in the blind spot or dangerously close and only changes lane as long as the sensors do not detect a hazard.

Video

Benefits: A lane-change warning offers additional protection for road users, but it’s not a replacement for the rear and side mirrors or glancing over your shoulder. This driver assistance system can indeed help to avoid accidents – the driver must nevertheless pay full attention.

What advantages does parking assist offer?

Parking assistants support you when manoeuvring or parking and help protect you from parking damage. The range thereby extends from systems with a warning function to systems which display the surroundings or automatically carry out the parking process. Assistants make use of ultrasound and camera sensor data. Parkpilot indicates the distance to surrounding objects and in this way supports the drive mainly through the use of beeping. A rear camera is more detailed: Additionally, it displays the area behind the car and adds in suggested lines which provides guidance when parking. In further developments, driver assistance systems completely take over the parking process and independently carry out all the required steering manoeuvres as well as braking and acceleration. With such automated systems the assistant manoeuvres your car into and out of tight parking spaces at the touch of a button. Up to a certain speed the BMW Rear Drive Assist is capable of reconstructing the last 50m of the route driven in reverse. This can be useful, for example, in parking situations, but also when you want to reverse into a narrow lane.

Video

Benefits: With this assistance system tight car parks and narrow parking spaces on the roadside should no longer present a challenge. The comfort and advantages of a self-parking vehicle are clear.

BMW X7 SUV tech features dynamic cruise control and parking assistant

Following is a transcript of the video.

Matt DeBord: Make sure that the wheel is turning. The wheel is turning. Wow, OK, it's an act of faith here.

Today, we're testing out BMW's largest SUV ever, the X7. I'm Matt DeBord. I get behind the wheel of the hottest cars and test them in real-world scenarios. Today, I'm testing all of the tech and driver-assistance features in the BMW X7 to see what's actually helpful and what's a gimmick. This is "Real Reviews" from Cars INSIDER.

BMW has added a seven-seater to its well-known lineup of SUVs. The new kid on the block is a big boy. It's an SUV version of the 7 Series Sedan, and what that means is that it's packed with premium features and lots of technology to assist in driving the ultimate driving machine. But before we hit the road, let's talk about the styling of the X7 and everything it has to offer.

The BMW X7 is, quite frankly, huge. It weighs in at nearly 3 tons and is 17 feet long. For the most part, it looks like what it's supposed to be: a mashup of the flagship 7 Series Sedan and a very beefed-up X5 SUV, but you can't ignore the most obvious feature: that absurdly massive kidney grill. It looks like it was borrowed from a 1920s Bentley. Love it or hate it, I sorta love it, there's no question that it's large and in charge. Inside the X7 is a den of luxury, just like the 7 Series. Everywhere you look, there's rich leather and gorgeous details, including a three-pane moonroof that floods the cabin with natural light. For the driver, some of the more hardcore sport-driving aspects have been sacrificed for outrageous comfort. You're surrounded by glossy black surfaces, brushed metal, and a lot of knobs, buttons, and shimmery screens. It's definitely over the top, and it should be for a $108,000 price tag. As for that third row, well, it's cozy, and if you have kids, they might like it way back there. But enough talking, let's put the X7 to the test.

I'm gonna take the X7 on a one-hour journey from downtown Manhattan to Montclair, New Jersey. Along the way, I'll test driving semi-autonomously with its dynamic cruise-control and lane-keep functions, I'll use my hands and voice to control the infotainment system, and I'll see if it can park and back up on its own.

OK, so now we're out on the highway in stop-and-go traffic, and I was able to activate the semi-self-driving feature that we were using in the city. So I've set the speed at 20. I'm gonna take it up to 50, and I set the following distance pretty far, which is the way I like it, and what will happen now is the adaptive cruise control and the lane-keep assist will keep the car in its lane. So I'm not using any brakes or accelerator here, I'm gonna just see if it'll whip me around the car that's in front of me, which it does. So this is this the experience I had driving it the other day, it's a little bit, it can be a little bit tentative at times. I think it's erring on the side of caution. This vehicle wants to be real careful about it speeding up when the system is on. So that's interesting, it should've warned me that guy was coming over into my lane, and I did not get a warning from the system, so you gotta be paying attention. You absolutely have to be paying attention. But overall, I think lane keep and dynamic cruise control are helpful features, not gimmicks.

So there's different gestures you can allegedly use within different functions on the infotainment system. So now we're in full-on nav, you see if I wave my hand like that, it throws up the menu, and if I sweep it back like that, it's supposed to go back to, see it's supposed to go back to being, to being not like it with these menus, but it doesn't always work. So if you do this, it turns the volume up. It's supposed to anyway. See, and then if you do that, it turns it back down. It's just, it's very confusing, y'know? There's a series of gestures that you should be able to use, sweeping gestures like that, OK, that wiped it clean, but now it's back. These gestures are a cool idea that don't always work as well as advertised, so I think this is a bit of a work in progress for BMW. I've had this experience on every BMW I've tested out that has this feature. The biggest gimmick is the gesture-control aspect of the infotainment system. Sounds good, never really works the way it's supposed to, and at times, because you're waving your hands around, it changes something that you don't want to change.

All right, let's try some voice-command features. You push this button on the steering wheel, the microphone button. Tune to 91.1FM.

BMW: I'm playing the frequency 91.1.

Matt: That was a little slower than what I'm used to. I use this system a lot to tune the radio nowadays, and it's pretty good for navigation, but it won't do things like... raise the temperature.

BMW: What temperature should I set?

Matt: Oh, wait, look at that! 72 degrees.

BMW: I'm setting the temperature on the driver's side to 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

Matt: Ah, look at that, it does work! I was skeptical about that. I don't use it to change the temperature very much, but it will do it. Increase the fan.

BMW: The fan intensity can be set by voice only in automatic mode.

Matt: Oh, I don't know what that means. So as you can see, there's a couple of things you can do with it that are quite useful. You can somewhat manage the climate-control system, you can change the radio station or the SiriusXM station, and you can manage the navigation system.

OK, we've come to the end of our mini road trip, and we're going to test out the automated-parking feature to see if the BMW X7 can locate and parallel park itself. All right, it has not located the spot. Let's try it again. Oh, there we go, it found that spot. It's just not doing it, see? That's gonna crash into that car. OK, fail. Sorry, didn't work. It's kind of a gimmick, what do you think? Gimmick? I think it's a gimmick.

OK, now that our parking assistant, the automated-parking feature, has failed, we're gonna give the backup assistant a shot. Now we're gonna see if the car can back up. Seventy-six feet seems to know what it's doing. Does it make sure that the wheel is turning? The wheel is turning. And... It... Wow, OK, it's an act of faith here. That was a... That worked. That worked. Did you see the wheel spinning like crazy there though?

So there you have it, the BMW X7. As far as driving performance goes, it lives up to BMW's reputation. Now, as far as the stuff inside that we tested out, the features, I didn't like the gesture control in the infotainment system, and I think the parking-assist features either don't work very well or are downright scary when they do work. So the big question is, is it worth $108,000? And I think the answer is: yes. It's worth $108,000. BMW has done a good job with its largest-ever SUV.

A Complete Guide to BMW Active Driving Assistant

cruise control in bmw x7

Advanced driver assistance technologies like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and collision avoidance systems are becoming standard fare on most modern luxury vehicles. These features all fall under the umbrella of ADAS – Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.

BMW packages their latest ADAS tech together into a suite called Active Driving Assistant. This comprehensive system uses cameras, radar, and sensors to help keep you centered in your lane, automatically adjust speed based on traffic, and warn you of impending collisions with visual, audible, and haptic alerts.

But how exactly does BMW’s Active Driving Assistant work and what specific capabilities are included? In this detailed guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about BMW’s advanced driver aid system:

  • Overview of the included technologies
  • How the cameras, radars, and sensors work together
  • Which BMW models offer Active Driving Assistant
  • Packaging and pricing details
  • Real world driving impressions and performance
  • Pros and cons compared to competitor ADAS systems

By the end, you’ll understand the inner workings of BMW’s Active Driving Assistant and whether it’s worth it for your next BMW purchase or lease. Let’s get started!

How Does BMW’s Active Driving Assistant Work?

BMW’s Active Driving Assistant is comprised of several advanced driver assistance features working together in unison. Here’s an overview of what’s included in the system:

Lane Departure Warning

Uses the front camera to monitor road markings. If you drift out of your lane without signaling, it alerts you with steering wheel vibrations.

Lane Keeping Assist

Goes beyond lane departure warning by applying subtle steering input to keep you centered if drifting occurs. Doesn’t work below 40 mph.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Uses front radar to detect vehicles ahead. Automatically accelerates and brakes to maintain a set distance. Works in stop-and-go traffic.

Forward Collision Warning

Monitors the road ahead using camera and radar. Alerts you if getting too close to a vehicle with visual, audible, and haptic warnings.

Pedestrian Warning

Uses the front camera to detect pedestrians near the roadway. Provides a clear visual warning on the dash if a collision is imminent. Applies braking if necessary.

This suite of advanced safety tech offers a comprehensive approach to minimizing driver burden on busy highways and congested city streets. But how do these features actually work on a technical level? Let’s look at the sensors and cameras that power Active Driving Assistant:

Front Facing Camera

A camera centrally mounted behind the rear view mirror looks ahead to read lane markings, detect vehicles, spot pedestrians, and read traffic signs.

Front and Rear Radar Sensors

Radar sensors on the front and rear bumpers constantly emit electromagnetic waves to determine distance and velocity of vehicles ahead of and behind you.

Ultrasonic Sensors

Ultrasonic sensors located around the vehicle use sound pulses to detect objects at close range around the car for parking and maneuvering.

This array of cameras and sensors provides a 360 degree view around the vehicle. Advanced image processing and software analyzes the inputs in real-time to power the Active Driving Assistant features. For example, the front camera reads road markings to enable the lane keeping assist. The front radar detects slower moving traffic ahead to allow adaptive cruise control to adjust your speed accordingly. If the camera detects a pedestrian near the road, it provides a visual forward collision warning.

While not fully autonomous self driving capability, Active Driving Assistant represents the next evolution in advanced driver assistance in production vehicles today. Next let’s look at which BMW models offer the technology.

BMW Models Offering Active Driving Assistant

BMW’s Active Driving Assistant system is available on most models across their lineup from sedans to SUVs. Here are the BMW models you can currently get with Active Driving Assistant:

  • 3 Series sedan
  • 4 Series coupe/convertible
  • 5 Series sedan
  • 7 Series sedan
  • 8 Series coupe
  • X6 coupe SUV

The system comes standard on higher trim levels like the 7 Series 750i xDrive and X7 xDrive40i. For lower trims it’s available as part of option packages, which we’ll cover next.

Packaging and Pricing

On most BMW models, you’ll find Active Driving Assistant as part of option packages, rather than as a standalone option. Here are some examples of packages that include the system:

Premium Package

  • Offered on lower trims of 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5
  • Includes heated front seats, universal garage door opener, auto-dimming mirrors
  • With Active Driving Assistant adds $1700 to package price

Driving Assistance Professional Package

  • Top level package offered on luxury trims
  • Adds extended traffic jam assist for limited hands-free capability
  • Includes adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go
  • Pricing ranges from $2500 – $3900 depending on model

The most affordable way to get Active Driving Assistant is by choosing a Premium trim that offers it as part of a standard package, rather than paying for it as a standalone option. On lower trims where it’s optional, expect to pay around $1700 extra for packages with the system included.

Real World Driving Experience

But enough about technical details and pricing. You probably want to know how BMW’s Active Driving Assistant actually performs on real roads. I had the opportunity to thoroughly test the system out on a BMW 330i sedan. Here are my impressions of the key features:

The lane keeping assist provided smooth, steady steering input to keep me centered whenever drifting out of my lane. I could feel it applying subtle torque through the steering wheel to guide me back between the lines. It works best on clearly marked highways and handles gentle curves with no problem. The hands-on detection ensures you keep a light grip on the wheel.

The adaptive cruise control makes long highway drives much more relaxing. Set your desired speed and distance setting and it handles all the acceleration and braking. It slowed down smoothly as traffic approached and sped back up when lanes were clear. Worked well in stop-and-go traffic too – coming to a complete stop when needed and resuming automatically.

Collision Warnings

The forward collision alerts provide clear visual warnings on the dash as you approach slowed traffic. It shows the exact vehicle you’re approaching that triggered the alert. The audible beep is loud enough to get your attention while not being overly intrusive. I also liked the rumble the driver’s seat gives as another sensory alert. Hard braking is applied automatically if you don’t respond in time.

Overall, Active Driving Assistant takes a lot of stress out of driving in all conditions. The visual warnings kept me aware of my surroundings at all times without being distracting or annoying. I appreciated how all the technologies work together to provide alerts and steering assistance when and where needed.

How Does It Compare to Competitors?

Now that you have an understanding of how BMW’s Active Driving Assistant works and performs, how does it stack up against competing advanced driving aids from other luxury automakers? Here’s a look at how BMW compares to systems from Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, and Tesla:

Mercedes – Their Drive Pilot system offers nearly identical capabilities to BMW’s Active Driving Assistant. Lane keeping and adaptive cruise work comparably well. Mercedes does a slightly better job smoothing out herky jerky braking.

Audi – Their Adaptive Cruise Assist with Lane Guidance doesn’t brake quite as smoothly as BMW’s in stop-and-go traffic. But Audi’s lane keeping assist handles sharp curves better at higher speeds.

Lexus – Lexus Safety System+ has solid adaptive cruise but seems a step behind in lane keep assist and accuracy of collision alerts. BMW’s system feels more refined and polished.

Tesla Autopilot – No advanced driving aid can match Tesla’s Autopilot, but you have to step up to a much higher price bracket. Active Driving Assistant is impressive for its price point.

While comparable systems exist, BMW’s Active Driving Assistant stands out with its seamless integration of alerts and steering assistance. The precision lane centering and braking smoothness help it edge out competitors. Only Tesla’s vastly more expensive Autopilot offers significantly better capability.

If you do a lot of highway driving or sit in congested traffic, BMW’s Active Driving Assistant can greatly reduce fatigue and stress. Features like the adaptive cruise, collision warnings, and lane keeping assist work together to supplement your driving. This gives you peace of mind that the vehicle is helping watch the road with an extra set of virtual eyes.

While not a replacement for an attentive driver, Active Driving Assistant represents the leading edge of mainstream production driver aids today. As the technologies continue to develop, capabilities like hands-free traffic jam assistance will become more robust.

Consider making BMW’s Active Driving Assistant a priority as you shop for your next luxury vehicle. The convenience and safety it provides will quickly prove indispensable once you experience it yourself during your daily commute. Just be sure to choose a well-equipped package or trim, so you don’t have to pay over $2000 extra to add it later. This comprehensive guide gave you a detailed look at how BMW’s system works, what’s included, availability, pricing, and real world performance. Now hit the road feeling confident and safe!

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is Coming to the BMW X3 and X4 in April

Unexpectedly or not, the facelifted BMW X3 and X4 cars, which were launched late last year, did not come standard with the most recent Active Cruise Control capabilities. This will alter in April when the SUV and Sports Activity Coupe will both be equipped with the most recent Stop & Go technology. One of the most helpful features you can receive in a BMW is the Active Cruise Control functionality, especially for prolonged highway drives. This is due to the fact that it offers several unique features in addition to Adaptive Cruise Control. Unlike the already-standard cruise control with braking function, it also maintains the distance to vehicles ahead, which the driver can decide in four phases, between 30 and 160 km/h (20 and 100 mph).

A radar sensor built into the front bumper is used for distance management, and if necessary, it will cause the automobile to slow down or come to a complete stop. Automatic resumption after brief intermediate stops of up to three seconds is also included in the list of features. Additionally, the technology gives the driver the choice to quickly change their intended speed to one of the speed restrictions registered by the Systems Speed Limit Info traffic sign recognition system.

All of this is a part of the typical Spring model improvements that BMW regularly provides for its vehicles. The Bavarian brand updates its models twice a year in the spring and fall, adding new technology, extra options, and occasionally new paint colors or interior materials. Few surprises were left when the BMW X3 and X4 models, which are relatively new to the market, were presented. Apparently, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go was one of them, but all will be resolved in April.

The best adaptive cruise control is found in the BMW 3 Series.

Each car’s adaptive cruise control varies a little since different manufacturers offer different features. Speed limit signs, for example, can be detected by the more sophisticated ACC models, which can then modify. This takes us to the BMW 3 Series’ integrated sensory technology and the greatest adaptive cruise control.

The BMW 3 Series analyzes the surroundings outside using cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors. For prolonged traffic congestion, the ACC in the 3 Series uses “stop and go” brake technology.

The BMW 3 Series’ ACC, as we previously mentioned, can keep an eye out for traffic signs and decipher what the suggested speed limit is.

The BMW 3 Series additionally includes steering and lane control assistance, as well as a cross-traffic alert, in addition to the “stop and go” braking. The 3 Series is one of the safest vehicles on the road when active side collision avoidance and a lane-keeping aid are included.

With Stop & Go functionality, active cruise control.

Just pick your preferred cruising pace, then unwind: If a slower car moves into the lane in front of you, Active Cruise Control will automatically slow you down until you come to a complete stop.

When stopped for less than three seconds, the BMW 5 Series Sedan moves forward automatically. Longer periods of inactivity require pressing a button on the steering wheel before the car will move off and speed back up to the designated cruise speed.

A 650-foot-range radar sensor continuously gauges the separation between you and the car in front of you and determines which lane the car is in.

There is a lot of video content on the website after this one. This could result in longer loading times for slower internet connections (like those made possible by modems or ISDN).

What ought I to watch out for?

Language used by Audi varies. At speeds up to about 40 mph, Traffic Jam Assist offers hands-on lane-centering steering. Above about 40 mph, Active Lane Assist, which Audi also refers to as lane centering, functions. Search for Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, also known as Adaptive Cruise Control or Adaptive Cruise Assist, to find adaptive cruise control. Every 2021 Audi model has it, with the exception of the R8 and TT sports cars. The Active Lane Assist feature is also available on the TT, however it is not lane centering. It should be noted that the Audi A3 bypassed the 2021 model year and that the revamped 2022 model year will have lane centering and adaptive cruise control to a stop.

Are there adaptive cruise controls on every BMW?

Despite not being designated as such, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems are frequently included in contemporary BMW models. Search for the phrases Active Cruise Control and Dynamic Cruise Control instead.

Dynamic Cruise Control is a relatively straightforward improvement over conventional cruise control. It is adept at maintaining a particular speed and deploying the brakes when necessary. This indicates that it doesn’t quite qualify as an ACC system.

On the other hand, Active Cruise Control is an adaptive system in all but name. The ability to select and maintain a distance behind other vehicles is one of many enhancements made to a standard system by the Active Cruise Control supplied by BMW.

Let’s examine some of the factors that make drivers adore adaptive cruise control:

If you intend to purchase a brand-new BMW, your auto insurance costs may be quite high. A few minutes and hundreds of dollars can be saved on your insurance by using Jerry, a comparison software. Jerry customers typically save over $800 a year on their insurance.

Is adaptive cruise control a part of the BMW Active Driving Assistant?

Can anyone confirm (or refute) that the following is a standard feature of the UK’s M50? It is part of the Driving Assistant Professional optional package.

A driver assistance system with cameras and radar called Driving Assistant Professional provides the highest level of comfort and safety while driving in boring or challenging conditions. It contains:

Utilizing radar sensors in the bumper, active cruise control with approach control controls the distance from the car in front. In stop-and-go traffic and traffic jams that have reached a full standstill, it automatically maintains distance and queue pace.

This implies that it is not included in the normal “Driving Assistant” bundle. I find it incomprehensible that the typical M50 (or any i4 for that matter) lacks it.

Are there adaptive cruise controls on the BMW 5 Series?

With 4 levels of closeness to choose from, the Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go feature is functional at speeds between 30 km/h and 210 km/h and aids in maintaining a safe distance from the vehicles ahead. In a risky circumstance, it can bring the 5 Series to a complete stop if necessary.

Can a BMW have adaptive cruise control installed?

I was considering the BMW’s adaptive cruise control option, but I’m not sure if I really need it. If I don’t receive it before I buy the car, can I add it later?

A useful feature is adaptive cruise control, especially if you travel long distances at high speeds. After purchase, you can add adaptive cruise control to your BMW, but it won’t be the same system that comes pre-installed in BMWs. Additional adjustments or alterations to the vehicle’s system might be necessary.

Without factoring in installation, you should expect to pay between $2,000 and $2,500 for the system alone. This is for the best system available, which operates at speeds between 60 mph and a complete stop.

The good news is that most BMWs already feature adaptive cruise control, so you won’t need to worry about purchasing it separately. Leave the function inactive if it’s one you don’t wish to use.

While having adaptive cruise control is helpful when driving for a long distance, you should also make sure you have a reliable insurance policy to keep you covered. You can find the best quotes from more than 55 major insurers in less than 45 seconds with Jerry, the number one auto insurance super app. Simply download the app, provide some information, and Jerry will find you discounts on the ideal coverage.

Could Active Cruise Control be added?

Recently, I tested out the adaptive cruise control feature in a friend’s automobile. My older car doesn’t have the function, which is a shame because I appreciated how it helped me regulate my speed and stay a safe distance from other cars. Is it possible for me to upgrade my car’s adaptive cruise control?

I’m sorry to learn that this fantastic feature is not present in your car. Adaptive cruise control (ACC) can, thankfully, be added to vehicles that do not currently have it.

When installing ACC in your vehicle, keep the following two things in mind:

Whether or not your car was built to accommodate ACC installation will depend on whether you need to install all of the additional needed components or not.

If an automobile already has the necessary installation parts, installing ACC into it will be substantially less expensive than if it doesn’t.

The price of ACC is between $2000 and $2500, not counting any additional parts or labor costs.

ACC is a crucial automotive feature, and you shouldn’t let the price prevent you from being safe. Jerry can help you save money on auto insurance so you have more money for other car amenities.

To find you the greatest deal on vehicle insurance, Jerry will compare the best offers from aggressive brokers in only 45 seconds. Simply download the app, fill out your information, and then relax while the hard work is done for you!

Is adaptive the same as active cruise control?

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) is a sophisticated type of cruise control that enables cars to automatically speed up and slow down to keep up with traffic in front of them.

ACC is sometimes referred to as active cruise control, autonomous cruise control, radar cruise control, and intelligent cruise control. Whatever name it goes by, it’s a feature that’s showing up in more and more new cars.

Which vehicles have lane assist and adaptive cruise control?

  • Toyota Camry 2021.
  • Toyota C-HR 2021.
  • Toyota Corolla 2021.
  • Toyota Highlander 2021
  • Toyota Mirai for 2021.
  • Toyota Prius in 2021.
  • Toyota RAV4 in 2021.
  • Toyota Sienna 2021

I was looking at the adaptive cruise control feature for BMWs and I’m unsure if it’s something I’ll need. Can I add it after if I don’t get it before I buy the car?

BMW Explained: Dynamic Cruise Control

cruise control in bmw x7

  • Add to quote

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-dNIPy9SxE Wondering what BMW's Dynamic Cruise Control is all about? Watch this video from BMW USA to learn how to activate and deactivate the Dynamic Cruise Control function to hold a set speed above 20mph. Dynamic cruise control is an electronic cruise control system with an extra braking function. This also includes the Curve Speed Limiter that reduces the speed in curves for comfortable lateral acceleration. At the end of the curve the car accelerates and resumes the original speed. The driver can change this in increments of 1 or 10 km/h. Acceleration and deceleration in two dynamic settings can be controlled by manipulating the lever on the steering column or the paddle on the steering wheel. Active Cruise Control Not to be confused with the similarly named Dynamic cruise control, Active cruise control provides an even more comfortable driving experience. Not only does it maintain the desired speed, it also keeps the selected following distance. A radar sensor with a range of up to 200 m continually measures the distance between your vehicle and the cars in front of it. The sensor also detects if these vehicles are in the same lane as your vehicle or in another.

2023 BMW X7 M60i 3-row SUV Review: How Much Pampering Do You Need?

The 2023 BMW X7 is a sporty, powerful, fun to drive 3-row SUV filled with true luxury: push-button everything, a new interior and top tech in a modern update.

Scotty Reiss With The Bmw X7 Luxury Suv

All this pampering feels so good.

“Hey BMW, set the cabin temperature to 68 degrees.” This may be one of the things I like most about the BMW X7 : voice activated assistance, which is part of the multimedia system in new BMW models . You just ask for what you want — temperature, radio station, directions — and voila, it’s taken care of.   That’s just the start of what’s so special about the 2023 BMW X7, which is priced from about $77K (the 2024 model, which is practically identical to the 2023 model, gets about a $5,000 bump in the price tag). Our test model, the xDrive M60i, has a V8 twin turbo engine, produces 523 horsepower and is priced at about $113K with all the options and amenities included (most of the features we experienced can be added to the base model as an option). Redesigned for the 2023 model year , this 6 for 7 passenger 3-row SUV, the largest BMW builds, gives buyers who need it all — all the luxury, technology, driving performance and space — all that and a little more.

The largest bmw ever built — but with some caveats.

The Rear Of The 2023 Bmw X7

While this is the largest SUV that BMW builds, it’s not huge— for good and bad.   For good: it’s fun to drive, easy to park and feels more like the performance car that inspired it than a huge SUV filled with BMW bling. It’s a true BMW.   For bad: it’s challenge to accommodate so many of the things that families might need, such as full-time 3rd row use, rear facing car seats, strollers, large sports bags or all the flotsam that comes with family life. For reference, the Cadillac Escalade is 9” longer and 4” taller. However, if this is the car you’ve dreamed of, you can make it work. One rear-facing car seat will fit behind the passenger’s seat, though the passenger may have to give up some leg room. Captains chairs ($850) will make accessing the 3rd row easier, and every passenger in every seat will feel special. Our test model had a bench seat so we didn’t get to try out captains chairs, but I highly recommend them. Getting into the third row, despite all the electric controls for the seats, is a challenge and once there, there is precious little leg room.

Rear Seat Legroom In The 2023 Bmw X7

How To Best Configure Child Car Seats

While the BMW X7 M60i probably isn’t the car you’d want to fill with kids in car seats , you could. There are four full LATCH sets: lower anchors in the center outboard seats and in the two 3rd row seats; there are upper tethers on all 5 rear seats.   Booster car seats or forward facing car seats will fit on all seats; the best seat for a rear facing car seat or infant seat is the center row passenger-side seat.   Will 3 car seats fit across the center bench? Probably— as long as they are all slim. However, if you choose the bench and install children’s car seats on the outboard seats, it will be impossible to access the 3rd row. The slide and tilt function will not work with a child car seat installed. To access the 3rd row, install car seats only on an outboard and center seat, or opt for captains chairs.

Buttons Move The Center Row For 3Rd Row Access, And Turn On Massaging Seats

Electric Seat Controls For 3rd Row Access

If you’re considering buying this car, you need to know this: There are buttons to control the 3rd row just about everywhere. First, there is a button on the driver’s door that slides the center row forward to allow for 3rd row access, and you can set it to slide the entire row, just the passenger’s side or just the driver’s side seats.   To slide and tilt the center seats forward, front seats move too, so don’t let this surprise you. Push the button again to restore the seats to their original position, including the front seats. It’s all a bit of a show. To slide and tilt the center row seats from center row, push a button on the center row seat shoulder. To fold the 3rd row up or down, there are buttons on the wall just next to the center row seats.   There are buttons in the cargo area to put up or down both the third row and the center row.   Phew. That’s a lot of buttons; but there are also manual red straps you can pull to operate all seats manually too, in case the electric system fails.

3Rd Row Seats In The Bmw X7

Maybe the Most Pampering 3rd Row Ever?

Once in the 3rd row, passengers will be pampered by all the amenities:

  • A separate climate control panel
  • A sunroof with a sun shade
  • Ambient lighting Two USB-C ports
  • Heated seats — yes, heated 3rd row seats!
  • And of course, cup holders

Position the center row seats a bit forward and the 3rd row is not a bad place to ride. However, consider that with center row seats pushed forward, those passengers will have less leg room, too.

The Front Seat In The 2023 Bmw X7

A Delicious New Design

BMW made subtle changes to the exterior of the X7 so as not to ruin the overall look and feel; this is the hallmark of a luxury car: design should be classic and constant. On the outside there are slender new headlights and re-tooled air intake grilles; the rear look almost untouched.   On the inside the updates are significant, from the flat screen that spans the dashboard for driver information and multimedia; a command center with the toggle gear selector, iDrive dial and drive mode buttons; and air vents integrated into the dashboard. The look is modern and sporty and there’s more function at your fingertips without being visually overwhelming. Seating is predictably luxurious, with quilted leather and leatherette in the base model. There are options for an Alcantara ceiling headliner, wood, metal or gloss accents and even a leather dashboard cover. Rear passengers can also opt for an Alcantara headrest pillow, which I highly recommend. It makes you feel so special.

The Bmw X7 Key

Oh, Yes, There’s a Performance Engine, Too

Lest we forget that this is the Ultimate Driving Machine, the X7 offers three engine options: the xDrive 40i with a V6 twin turbo that produces 375 HP; the M60i with a V8 twin turbo that produces 523 HP, which was in our test model; and the Alpina XB7, with a V8 that produces 631 HP.   The V8 shines; you’ll hear its subtle growl on the road, a little more pronounced in sport mode, and you’ll feel the BMW’s commanding capability on the highway and back roads. It’s fun to drive and never gives the feeling of driving a huge truck.   However, it is not a sports car, which is a good thing. We don’t want back seat passengers to feel nauseous or whipped around on the drive. The X7’s all wheel drive system and stability control is designed to assist with this, as is something in the M60I called “Active Comfort Drive” which uses navigation and sensors to predict turns and bumps in the road and mitigate the impact on passengers.

There Is 12.8 Cubic Feet Of Space Behind The 3Rd Row

What You Need to Know

  • This is a full luxury SUV, even in the base model
  • All wheel drive is standard
  • BMW calls this ‘full sized’ but it’s smaller than many other full sized SUVs on the road
  • This SUV is better for families with older kids; accommodating car seats can be a challenge
  • Most features can be added to the base model as an option
  • Captains chairs are an $850 addition
  • 12.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the 3rd row; 48.6 cubic feet behind the second row
  • Base model V6 estimated to get 22MPG city/highway combined; our test model estimated to get 18 MPG combined

The Surround View Camera In The 2023 Bmw X7

What the BMW X7 Costs

  • Base X7 x Drive 40i with twin turbo V6 engine, 375 HP, AWD $81,900
  • M sport design package $2,900
  • Leatherette is standard, add leather for $1,950- $4,650
  • Panoramic sunroof, premium sound, heated and cooled cupholders, soft close doors, electric sun shades, front massaging seats and gesture control, $3950
  • Driving assistance package including adaptive cruise control, $2,100
  • Captains chairs $850
  • Crystal-topped controls $650
  • MSport brakes, illuminated kidney grille and MSport exhaust, $1,350
  • Premium Bowers and Wilkins sound, $3,500
  • Our test model, X7 M60i twin turbo V8 with 523 HP and AWD starts at $108,300 and included full marino leather, piano gloss trim, driving assistance, panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled cupholders, crystal controls, heated and vented seats, heated rear seats and 5 zone climate control, was preceded at $121,680
  • The BMW Alpina XB7 starts at $149,400

The Bmw X7 Has A Forward Facing Camera

Yes, There’s a Little More

BMW does a nice job of adding a lot of luxury details: electric window shades; the clamshell lift gate that opens from the center so you can open just the top or both top and bottom; a panoramic sunroof for front and center seats and a sunroof over the 3rd row; full LATCH systems in all rows; heated seats in all rows; heated and cooled front cupholders; massaging seats; a button to slide and tilt center row seats for 3rd row access. Voice activated assistance. It goes on and on. But, this is the full luxury experience. And fully pampering.

We’ve been keeping busy shooting the BMW X3 M50 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and we almost missed the “G45” configurator is now live in the United States. As of this week, the fourth-generation luxury crossover can be customized on the company’s website. It’s far simpler to browse than in other markets because the US only gets the 30 xDrive and the M50 xDrive.

That’s right – the new X3 sold stateside doesn’t get a plug-in hybrid, although that could change at one point in the future . As with the rest of the world, the sDrive versions with rear-wheel drive are gone. From now on, BMW is going to offer its best-selling model strictly with xDrive. Needless to say, there aren’t any diesel engines available in the US.

The base 2025 BMW X3 30 xDrive sets you back $50,675 before options. Step up to the M Performance variant and the price jumps to $65,275. Both include the $1,175 in destination and handling fees. We’ve highlighted the entry-level model without the M Sport Package. We did add the Vegas Red and Arctic Race Blue paint jobs for which BMW is charging $650. The Frozen Deep Gray matte color from the Individual catalog costs a steep $3,600.

The new X3 can get expensive with just a few mouse clicks. The hot M50 with all available options is going to set you back nearly $80,000. Individual items include the $500 front ventilated seats, the $250 manual rear window shades, and $200 for rear climate control. Those looking to splurge can also get the $350 woven textile dashboard and heated front and rear seats for $500. If you plan to tow, the trailer hitch is another $600. For a fancier interior, the Extended Merino leather costs $1,500. Otherwise, the seats are covered in Veganza (vegan leather) .

Packages are also plentiful, including a pricey $2,700 Premium Package with a head-up display and an interior camera. It also brings the Harman Kardon surround sound system, adaptive cruise control with stop & go, and the Parking Assistant Plus. Spend an extra $600 and you can order the new X3 with an M Sport Professional Package with M Shadowline adaptive full LED lights and M Sport brakes with red calipers. This package also has the Extended Shadowline Trim that blacks out certain elements of the body.

Made in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the 2025 BMW X3 will have its US market launch in the fourth quarter of the year.
