For over 20 years, Powerboat Adventures has been delighting guests from across the globe with the most amazing Exuma Excursion in The Bahamas.
We were the original pioneers of the Exuma tour, and remain the most popular and well received day trip available. Our blend of excitement, natural beauty and impeccable service is unmatched ,
One key to our amazing day is our island, Ship Channel Cay…
No waiting for 30 other boat tours to leave before you can find space to pull up for 10 minutes with the wildlife.
Having our own private place for our guests allowed us to build out the old cottage on the island to provide our bar, dining areas, and a perfect base to hang out in some shade. Throw in sweeping panoramic views of the most amazing water in the world, and we truly do have it all !
The Swimming Pigs, The Stingrays and our Other Friends
And then there’s our wildlife… long before swimming pigs became a ‘thing’, Ship Channel Cay island was home to wild pigs that settled there many, many years before we were on the cay.
They would regularly come down to the beach and nudge a guest for a treat, or just lounge in the sun before cooling off in the water, unphased by the sharks lazily circling close by, or the stingrays gliding up and down the shallow sands.
Today, the swimming pigs on the island are still as friendly, still as cheeky, and still as cute! Our love and respect for the pigs, sharks and stingrays prompted us to ensure all our crew were fully trained in both handling the wildlife and ensuring our guests are kept safe throughout the day.
So come, join us for the experience of a lifetime – you’re in good hands!

Where is Pig Beach, Bahamas?
The world-famous and super cute swimming pigs of Exuma live at Big Major Cay, also known as Pig Beach, an island entirely uninhabited by humans, located around 82 mi southeast of Nassau, Bahama’s capital, and 50 mi northwest of George Town, Exuma’s capital.
How the pigs got to Big Major Cay nobody knows, but the fact is that they live in a piece of paradise.
How to get to Pig Beach from Nassau
There are only two ways to get from Nassau to Pig Island, by boat or plane.
Traveling from the Bahamas’s capital you can fly directly to Staniel Cay, just a 30-minute ride, or book a swim-with-pigs tour from Nassau by powerboat. Below you find the details about these two options available and many tips to plan your trip.
1 – Book a Pig Beach Tour with Flight included
If you’ve been dreaming about swimming with pigs in the original Pig Beach in the Bahamas, my recommendation is to book a day trip from Nassau with everything included. It’s much easier, cheaper and stress-free.
If you book this Intimate Pig Beach Excursion to Exuma Swimming Pigs & Flight Options with Viator, a Trip Advisor company, you’ll pay US$ 750 /per person. Including roundtrip to the airport .
Excluded : lunch.
The tour has seven stops and apart from swimming with the pigs, you’ll also get the chance to feed iguanas, pet the sharks and snorkel in one of the best snorkelling spots in the world, Thunderball Grotto (where the James Bond homonym movie was filmed).
The flight has only a few seats, so booking your ticket in advance is highly recommended. Check out the reviews and tour details here .
Another seven-stop tour with flights included that might interest you is this one that departs at 8:00 AM from a private and hassle-free airport in Nassau, which can be much more convenient. The tour includes roundtrip airport transfers, soft drinks, light snacks and lunch .
Book your tour online in advance
P.S.1: These tours are currently available only for two or more travelers . If you are travelling alone or put only one person , it’ll say that the tour is unavailable .
P.S.2: You can reserve any of these two tours now, pay it later and get a full refund up to 24h before the activity starts in case you need to cancel it.

2 – Book a Pig Beach Tour from Nassau by Powerboat
The cheapest way to visit Pig Beach and swim with the famous swimming pigs of Exuma is to book a Pig Beach tour from Nassau by powerboat.
You can book this Exuma Island Hopping & Swimming Pigs Tour with Lunch from Nassau for approximately US$ 438 , or this Exuma full-day Experience , which includes a stop at Pablo Escobar’s plane crash, pick up & drop off, food and beverage for US$ 468 .
Both tours have really good reviews, friendly local guides and great service. You can reserve it now and pay later.
The tours take up to 8-9h and are subject to weather conditions.
P.S: Please note that the boat ride from Nassau to Pig Beach takes an average of 3h, and is not suitable for children under three years old, pregnant women or persons with recent back injuries or major surgery.

My Experience getting to Pig Island
While planning my Three-day trip to the Bahamas , one of the places that I really wanted to see was Exuma Island, which features some of the clearest and most beautiful sapphire-blue water on the planet.
When I discovered that I could go swimming with pigs and sharks in Exuma, I hesitated a bit at first, because I was scared of sharks, but then decided to do it no matter how much money I would have to spend.
I didn’t know how to get to Pig Beach from Nassau, so I was searching for tour companies and found Coastline Adventures. They gave me all the information I needed in order to go from Nassau to Exuma for the day trip to see the hilarious swimming pigs.
I took the first flight from Nassau to George Town at 6:00 AM, the driver picked me up at the airport around 7:00 and then the other people who were joining the tour at their hotels.
The Coastline Adventure Swimming Pigs tour was excellent!
We sailed on the crystal clear water of different shades of blue of Exuma Cays, saw some islands owned by celebrities and stopped on a breathtaking sandbank.
We also went to Thunderball Grotto (where two James Bond movies were shot), passed Nicolas Cage’s Island and of course went swimming with pigs at Big Major Cay and with sharks at Compass Cay.
The music on the boat was really good, and the vibe was awesome. We had free drinks and a lot of fun feeding and swimming with the pigs and piglets.
The Swimming Pigs Tour covers a total of over 120 miles. So be prepared to spend a lot of time on the boat and under the sun.
In the end, they dropped me off at the airport on time to catch my flight back to Nassau.
How much does it cost to swim with pigs in the Bahamas?
If you’re in Nassau or Paradise Island you’ll spend at least US$ 438 for a Swimming with Pigs Tour by powerboat , and US$ 750 if you book a tour with flight included.
In case you’re already on Exuma Island and want to swim with the famous pigs, you’ll spend a minimum of US$ 448 or 336 (if you’re in a group of four) on a Pig Island Tour.
If you’re on a budget, the cheapest way to swim with pigs in the Bahamas is to take a Pig Beach tour from Nassau to Athol Island from US$ 140 or Rose Island from US$ 195 . But note that these are not the original Pig Island.
My recommendation, is, of course, to go to Exuma, because it’s a stunning archipelago, and you will also visit other beautiful islands along the way.
I’m not adding here the costs to get to the Bahamas because they can vary significantly depending on many factors, such as time of the year, distance traveled, etc.
Flying directly to Staniel Cay from Nassau the minimum you’ll spend will be US$ 250 , and from Fort Lauderdale (Miami area) around US$ 897.40 .

Final Considerations & Tips
Some things to take into consideration when you plan your Swimming with Pigs trip are:
– The full-day Swimming with Pigs tours are long (8-9h) and you spend a considerable amount of time on the boat.
– Bear in mind that open sea safari tours are not suitable for expectant mothers, infants and persons with back, knee, neck and heart problems or conditions affected by high-speed travel.
– The tours that depart from Nassau and Paradise Island are subject to cancellation due to weather conditions (wind, rain, hurricane, etc), so make sure to book it for the next day after you arrive, so if it gets cancelled, you may have another chance to do it.
– Flying direct to Staniel Cay is much easier, and faster and you’ll spend less time sailing, but it’ll be more expensive.
– For me, the best option is to stay two or three nights in Grand Exuma, take the tour in one day and enjoy the islands/beach in front of the hotel during the others.
– If you have limited time, my recommendation is to book this tour .
– Note that if you’re traveling to the Bahamas on a cruise ship you might not have enough time to take in a Pig Beach Tour.
– Be careful when you feed the pigs and the iguanas too.
– Pack light and don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and your camera, please.
Safe travels and have fun in the Bahamas and swimming with the pigs in Exuma.

Visiting the Bahamas
Where’s it located.
The Bahamas is located in the Atlantic Ocean, 50 mi off the coast of Florida. The country is comprised of 700 islands sprinkled over 100,000 square miles (check the map here ).
How to get there
The main airport is the Nassau International Airport , now known as Lynden Pindling International Airport , which is situated 10 mi west of Nassau, New Providence Island.
You can book your flights with Skyscanner which is the website that I use and trust.
From the U.S. there are direct flights with Delta , United, JetBlue, BahamasAir and Southwest Airlines.
There are direct flights with Air Canada departing from Canada.
From other countries is easier to fly to the U.S., Miami or Fort Lauderdale, than take another flight from there.
To Exuma, there’s an international airport in Moss Town, northwest of George Town, and there are direct flights from Nassau, Miami, Atlanta and Toronto.
There is also a ferryboat from Nassau to Exuma with Bahamas Ferries , but it’s a very long journey.
Best Time to Visit the Bahamas
The Bahamas can be visited all year round with temperatures ranging from 21C (70F) in the winter and 26-32C (80-90F) during the summer.
But there are two things to consider:
- The hurricane season lasts from June to November.
- The months with the most rain are May and June.
Where to stay near Pig Beach
I stayed in Nassau at Coco Plum Resorts Bahamas, (which I don’t recommend) and just flew to Exumas to take the tour.
If you’re looking for hotels near Pig Beach my recommendations are Embrace Resort , Paradise Bay , Exuma Beach Resort .
If you want to stay in the capital area, I recommend:
Nassau : Sandyport Beach Resort , British C olonial Hilton Nassau , Holiday Inn Express , Meliá Nassau Beach .
Paradise Island : Bay View Suites , Comfort Suites , The Cove Atlantis , The Ocean Club .

1. Swim With The Pigs
Pigs can’t fly but they sure can swim; join us as we embark on this magical Swimming Pigs Tour adventure! Swim with friendly sharks at compass cay, feed the swimming pigs and get a close look at the endangered Bahamian Rock Iguanas all while cruising in the pristine waters of the Exuma Cays.
The Swimming Pigs
In the middle of paradise, with billionaires and celebrities for neighbors, is an island populated only by swimming pigs . For decades, this archipelago of 365 islands would remain largely unknown to the world. It would not be a ruthless pirate, pioneering loyalists, a notorious drug kingpin, or the infamous Fyre Festival that would unveil Exuma to the world, but rather the most unlikely of creatures. Appearing in magazines, videos, newspapers, commercials, TV shows, and countless selfies, the Swimming Pigs of Exuma, in the Bahamas, have become a bucket-list sensation and have been named one of the marvels of the universe.
Big Major Cay, is a daydream when you meet the inhabitants: loud, snorting pigs paddling out to greet you like a jolly bunch of golden retrievers rushing to the door when their owner finally gets home from a long day of work.
The locals at Big Major’s “Pig Beach” are transplants rather than native islanders, just like many of the people you’ll meet in the area. And though they’ve clearly taken to their tropical digs and rising popularity — spurred in part by a dramatic appearance on “The Bachelor” and more than a few well-liked Instagram posts — the rewards of fame are free food. Most tours to the island start at 9 a.m. It’s best to go early in the morning for the most uninterrupted attention from the pigs. By late afternoon, you’ll usually find them tuckered out with full bellies, and they’re more likely to lounge in the sand than to paddle through the water with you.
2. Swimming With The Sharks On Compass Cay
with Staniel Cay Adventures
Does swimming with the sharks sound dangerous? This part of a tour can be loads of fun! Nurse sharks, the bottom-dwelling sharks that live in warm, shallow waters of the Bahamas are a friendly bunch. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to get up close at Compass Cay just north of Staniel Cay
The nurse sharks are – for the most part – harmless to swimmers and snorkelers.
Nurse sharks may have the ominous dorsal fin of a predator but they are much more easygoing than your average shark. These sharks are greyish-brown in appearance, reach 7.5 to 9.75 feet long, and weigh up to 300 pounds! Young nurse sharks can be identified by their spots. Nurse sharks feed on the fish, squid, and crabs of shallow ocean floors, and use their strong jaws to crush and eat shellfish, and even coral.
Is it safe to swim with nurse sharks?
A human fear of sharks is not without reason, but it just so happens that nurse sharks are laid-back and mostly harmless. That is why many divers and snorkelers visit the Bahamas to swim with sharks. Nurse sharks that live near marinas are fed by local fisherman and have grown accustomed to the presence of humans. This makes them much more friendly. Having your own day tour with Staniel Cay Adventures allows you to take advantage of every opportunity to swim with the nurse sharks.
3. Visit The Iguanas On Bitter Guana Cay
With Staniel Cay Adventures
The Exuma Island Iguana is a critically endangered subspecies of northern Bahamian rock iguana that is found on the Exuma island chain in the Bahamas with a wild population of 1,300 animals, it is listed on the IUCN Red List. Iguanas of Bitter Guana Cay is a must stop to visit with amazing coral rock formations hand over a picture perfect little sandy beach. The Exuma Island iguana is the smallest of the three subspecies of C. cychlura . It attains a total length of close to 3.3 ft. Its coloration is dark-gray to black, with white or orange tinged scales on the head and snout depending upon which cay the iguana is from. As soon as you step on Bitter Guana Cay, you will notice the island is filled with iguanas. These iguanas are endangered species, with the population being less than 5,000.
If you just pass by, you will not notice the dozen of iguanas on the island; they won’t move or scurry or even blink. When you pull up in the boat and hit the sandy beach they will run out to greet to you like a long lost friend. They hang around like puppy dogs, basking in the sun & playing with the visitors. Just like the other islands in The Exumas that are inhabited by wildlife, these are accustomed to people visiting them. As you walk the beach, you will notice some stay in hiding; they are super friendly, although they will only let you get so close.
Due to their isolation to the rest of the world, the iguanas are indigenous to this island & are not found anywhere else. This subspecies is found on at least seven small cays throughout the central and southern Exuma island chain of the B ahamas: Bitter Guana Cay, Gaulin Cay, White Bay Cay, Noddy Cay, North Adderly Cay, Leaf Cay, and Guana Cay. The entire population on Leaf Cay was translocated to Pasture Cay in 2002.The Exuma Island iguana utilizes a variety of habitats from sandy beaches and xeric limestone devoid of vegetation to dry forests. The iguanas use limestone crevices or sand burrows for retreats at night and in adverse weather conditions The Exuma Island iguana, like most Cyclura species is primarily herbivorous, consuming leaves, flowers, berries, and fruits from over 100 plant species. Favored food plants include seaside rock shrub , darling plum , pride of big pine , joewood , black torch , seagrape silver thatch palm, white stopper , bay cedar , and the rotting fruit of seven-year apple . The Exuma Island iguana is also an important means of distributing these seeds to new areas (particularly when females migrate to their nesting areas) and, as the largest native herbivores of their island’s ecosystem, they are essential for maintaining the balance between climate and vegetation. The longevity record in captivity for an Exuma Island iguana is twenty-three years, six months.
The iguanas live in large social colonies with a lack of social structure; typically not aggressive towards each other. They bask in the sun, relax & greet with visitors to their own private island.
4. Snorkel Thunderball Grotto
Retrace 007’s swim-finned steps with an unforgettable excursion to this famous turquoise grotto.
Cue the martinis, bombshells in bikinis, and MI6 secret weapons. Thunderball Grotto, an underwater cave that’s been featured in two James Bond movies, also happens to be one of the most spectacular places to snorkel in the Bahamas.
A short boat ride from the northwest coast of Staniel Cay in the Exumas, Thunderball Grotto has played host to several silver screen gems, including Bond flicks Thunderball (1965) and Never Say Never Again (1983), Splash (yes, the one where Daryl Hannah plays a mermaid), and Into the Blue , starring Jessica Alba.
In Thunderball , Sean Connery’s James Bond heads to the Bahamas to recover two nuclear warheads stolen by global terrorist organization SPECTRE.
Thunderball Grotto
Thunderball Grotto is located two minutes from Staniel Cay Exuma, offering an incredible underwater cave system is great for snorkeling and wading. You will experience a variety of friendly marine life along with brilliantly colored coral reefs and Sergeant Majors ,Yellow-tail snappers and Angel fish. We provide professionally maintained snorkeling equipment from our certified PADI Dive Master .
5. Staniel Cay Yacht Club
The centerpiece of the Staniel Cay community is the famous and historic Staniel Cay Yacht Club ; a luxury boutique hotel with over water bungalows, marina, restaurant and bar. With close proximity to Staniel Cay Yacht Club is known by some as the gateway to the Exumas. Staniel Cay Yacht Club is the perfect place to lunch and people watch.
6. Exuma's Famous Sandbars
With sapphire-blue water everywhere, The Exumas are an exotic collection of dream destinations. The white sand exquisiteness and tropical waters make for an excellent destination on any Bahamas day trip to the Exumas. It is just one of many attractions within the vicinity of Staniel Cay. Staniel Cay Adventures stops at one of the most spectacular in the Bahamas. Enjoy the incredible shallow and narrow channels of crystal clear blues and stunning white sand beach that peek out of the water at low tide. You will see exotic life under the sea and experience quiet seclusion like you can’t get in other parts of the Bahamas. The Exuma sandbars are the definition of an oasis deep in the Bahamas!
7. Snorkel a Sunken Plane
The wreckage of one of Pablo and Carlos’ plane, lies just off of Staniel Cay in shallow water. We will anchor the boat and snorkel the most famous plane crash in the Bahamas.

Description
The original swimming pigs tour adventure on staniel cay.
In the middle of paradise, with billionaires and celebrities for neighbors, is an island populated only by swimming pigs. Appearing in magazines, videos, newspapers, commercials, TV shows, and countless selfies, the Swimming Pigs of Staniel Cay Exuma, in the Bahamas, have become a bucket-list sensation and have been named one of the marvels of the universe.
Feed the turtles, visit the original swimming pigs , swim with the sharks and feed the iguanas.

Swimming With Pigs in the Bahamas
Getty Images
Reels of people frolicking with pigs on a beach in the Caribbean have more than likely surfaced on your TikTok and Instagram feeds at one point or another. After all, millions of people partake in this quintessential Bahamas experience each year, and the attraction is so popular that it's been replicated in other destinations.
If swimming with pigs in the Bahamas is on your bucket list, read on to discover the best tour options as well as what to consider when you visit.
Which Bahamas island has swimming pigs?
Located in the Exumas, Big Major Cay – commonly known as Pig Beach – is the original Bahamas island with swimming pigs. It is accessible from several islands in the Bahamas as well as Florida. Most swimming pig tours include other tourist attractions and experiences, including snorkeling in Thunderball Grotto (a filming location for two James Bond movies) and swimming with nurse sharks at Compass Cay.
How to get to Pig Beach from the Exumas
Staniel Cay: Staniel Cay is the closest inhabited island to Big Major Cay. Guests of Staniel Cay Yacht Club can take a short boat ride to Pig Beach via a local charter. 3N's Vacation Services and Staniel Cay Adventures are both reputable companies that offer such options.
Great Exuma: The largest island in the Exumas, Great Exuma houses some of the best resorts in the Bahamas , including the family-friendly Grand Isle Resort & Residences and the adults-only Sandals Emerald Bay . To get to Pig Beach from Great Exuma, it's best to book directly with your hotel. You'll have the option to take a full-day tour (with a roughly two-hour boat ride to the attractions from Great Exuma) or fly to Staniel Cay and take a short boat ride to Big Major Cay from there.
How to get to Pig Beach from Nassau
Pig Beach is reachable from Nassau via plane and/or boat. Below are some of the top-rated swimming pig tours from the Bahamas' capital city:

How to get to Pig Beach from Florida
There are a few reputable companies that offer Pig Beach tours from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Below is a well-rated option:
Bahamas Air Tours: Miami to Bahamas Day Trip
Price: From $949 per person Duration: 12 hours
This full-day tour starts with private transportation from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. It also includes in-destination transportation to Pig Beach, Guana Cay, Thunderball Grotto, Compass Cay and the sandbars at Staniel Cay. Both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages are included in the price as well. Recent travelers rave about this experience, with some noting it's the best tour they've ever taken.
Note that passports are required for this day trip, and that while children are permitted on the tour, it's not ideal for young kids. This excursion is also ill-suited for pregnant women, and the tour operator requires a doctor's clearance for expectant mothers. Tours are limited to nine guests (but require a minimum of five participants); private charters are also available.
Is Pig Beach ethical?
Even though the Bahamas limits the number of tour operators allowed to visit Pig Beach per day, there's some controversy surrounding the island and whether or not it's ethical to visit.
In 2017, several pigs were found dead after an influx of tourists left snacks on the beach, causing the pigs to ingest too much sand. Also, travelers can be aggressive with the pigs, often chasing them, picking them up or even trying to ride them.
In recent years, a number of safety measures have been put in place to protect both the pigs and tourists. Per the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, they include the following:
- A trough provides a designated feeding place for the pigs.
- Signage communicates rules to tourists, including what you can and cannot feed to the pigs. The pigs are restricted to a diet of fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, grapes, watermelon, apples and lettuce, and many guides supply these items for tourgoers. Some tour guides will provide bread as well, though processed food is not ideal for these animals.
- A local taskforce of caretakers is on the ground daily to ensure visitors and tour operators are engaging with the pigs responsibly.
While the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism maintains that the attraction is sustainable, know that there aren't any legal limitations protecting the pigs at this time.
How to be a responsible traveler at Pig Beach
All tour guides are expected to share the following protocols with travelers; whether they do or not, it is important to respect these rules for both the safety of the pigs and you:
- Remain calm at all times.
- Do not chase, pick up or ride the pigs.
- Do not engage with the pigs without supervision.
- Only use approved food from your tour operator, and do not feed the pigs alcohol.
- If you do not have feed, hold your hands up to show the pigs you do not have anything.
What to pack for your excursion
Pack a beach bag , dry bag or backpack with the following items:
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Beach towel
- Camera and/or phone
- Waterproof phone pouch with lanyard
- Change of clothing
- Windbreaker or light jacket (in case of rain and because it gets chilly on the water)
- Cash and/or credit card (for tour guide tip and other purchases)
It's best to wear a swimsuit and a cover-up or T-shirt with sandals for the trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
There are several theories about the origin of the swimming pigs. The most logical is that when the Exumas gained popularity with the rich and famous in the 1980s and '90s, the resident pigs were too smelly to stay and were hence moved to the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay.
It is generally safe provided you're respectful of the animals. However, you should keep in mind that the pigs are known to bite if they're hungry and think you might have food you're not sharing. Because Big Major Cay is their home, they also defecate on the shoreline and in the water.
Most tour operators do not allow children under age 2 on these excursions, and based on our experience, we don't recommend bringing toddlers and young children in general — even if rates are free or discounted for them. Wait until your kids are a bit older.
Swimming with pigs on Big Major Cay – the original Pig Beach in the Bahamas – will cost you several hundred dollars – in part because Big Major Cay is a remote destination only accessible by boat. Of course, it is also pricey because of its popularity. Copycat experiences like swimming with the pigs on Rose Island are cheaper, but less authentic.
Why Trust U.S. News Travel
Amanda Norcross previously visited Pig Beach during a press trip to the Bahamas. Disheartened by tourists' mistreatment of the pigs, she aims to educate travelers on how to visit Big Major Cay and other animal-centric destinations responsibly.

The Exumas are made up of around 365 islands and are famous for their extravagant beauty. Pig Island is one of the busiest islands of the group. The island is home to an estimated 20 to 25 pigs varying from little piglets to the oldest pig of the gang - Big Momma. As they all see thousands of visitors every day, they are well-habituated with people.
- Pig Population: 20-25 Pigs
Exactly how the pigs got on the island is something of a mystery - although that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of stories of how they got there. The pigs see visitors and know they are about to be fed, so they swim out to get their morsels.
Today tourists go to Pig Island to feed and pet the pigs as well as take photos with them. It is a year-round attraction.
Enjoy a day out to Pig Island and choose between flying, paying more but having more time to explore the attractions, or taking a speedboat, paying less but having less time there.

Pig Island Bahamas: Home to the Swimming Pigs
The adventure awaiting you on Pig Island Bahamas is undoubtedly something that you will never have experienced anywhere else on earth. Pig Island Bahamas is the most sought after destination in the entire world, and the reason is simple: because of its residents. Your visit to Pig Island Bahamas will bring you face to face with some of the most unlikely of creatures in this setting, ordinary farm pigs.
Located at least 3 hours out of Nassau by boat, Pig Island Bahamas is relatively remote, and yet the pigs still draw crowds every day, regardless of the season. Pig Island Bahamas is one of the 365 islands in the Exuma Cays. This string of islands showcases some of the best, if not the absolute best, of what the Bahamas has to offer. Hundreds of gemlike islands leading off into the distance with dazzling turquoise water lapping at their shores. The Exuma Cays offers the authentic Bahamian experience with its exquisite islands, world-renowned accommodation and endless adventures. With all of this in mind, you’ll realize that a trip to Pig Island Bahamas is sure to include a whole lot more than the pigs themselves.
Pigs swim off Pig Beach on Pig Island Bahamas
Booking a Pig Island Bahamas vacation with Bahamas Air Tours is the very best way for you to enjoy this trip. Not only will you be subject to the joy and wonder of flight, but you also won’t need to spend 3 hours on a small boat skimming across the Bahamian ocean. Instead, you can fly to Staniel Cay and take a tour from there. Staniel Cay is the ideal base from which to visit the Bahamas Pigs, but it is also so much more. With some of the very best that the Exuma Cays has to offer in the area, and one of the best Yacht Clubs in the world, Staniel Cay is your gateway to an unforgettable Bahamian vacation.
Pig Island Bahamas (Big Major Cay)
Big Major Cay is the official name for Exuma Pig Island Bahamas, however almost everyone calls it Pig Island, or at the very least will know exactly where you’re talking about. Big Major Cay is located just to the north of Staniel Cay in the Exuma Cays and welcomes thousands upon thousands of visitors to its shore every year.
Pig Beach Bahamas on Big Major Cay Island in The Bahamas
While Staniel Cay may have a small airstrip for aircraft to land, Big Major Cay has little to no infrastructure on it at all. While this may seem inconvenient, it actually makes your time on the island that much more special. The reason for this is that you’ll get an idea of what the Bahamas looks like without the presence of humans, without big buildings or colossal resorts like in Nassau. Though you are likely to find this island to be crowded from about 11am to 2 pm, on either end of this bracket you could easily find it to be entirely empty. This is another benefit of staying at Staniel Cay, you’re able to tour the island well before the numerous boats from Nassau arrive.
Big Major Cay Bahamas Pigs cannot be found around the entire island though, they can specifically be found on Pig Beach Bahamas. Your visit to piggy island, or Big Major Cay, will undoubtedly be an unforgettable one, this trip really is worth your time.
The Famous Swimming Bahamas Pigs
You may be wondering what’s so special about a bunch of pigs on a beach in the Bahamas. Well, aside from the comical aspect of seeing these ordinary farm animals immersed in tropical paradise. What makes the pigs of Pig Island Bahamas so special is that they swim. This truly is an adorable and rather funny activity to witness. To see animals that look like they belong in a muddy field on a farm paddling around in the tropical wonderland that is the Bahamas is sure to make your Pig Island Bahamas vacation a memorable one.
Swimming Pigs at Pig Island Bahamas
The swimming pigs exuma truly are charming, and as your boat pulls into the bay of Pig Beach Bahamas, you’ll find that they actually swim out to you. The older and larger the pigs get, the less they swim, and will instead just wade out into the water. However, the smaller pigs are tenacious, and have been known to swim as far as a mile away from shore in the hopes of a tasty snack from a passing boat.
As the pigs of Pig Island Bahamas swim up to you, they will have their snouts raised hopefully, expecting a treat of some kind. While feeding these creatures is entirely encouraged, they are still wild animals, and should be treated with caution. That being said, if you feel comfortable enough to get in the water beside them, you’ll find that they make quite great swimming companions. You’ll be sure to get some truly excellent holiday snaps of the pigs swimming through the crystalline turquoise waters of swimming pigs island.
You may be wondering how the pigs actually ended up here. Though the stories that locals tell of shipwrecks can be quite entertaining, the reality is a little more simple. Decades ago, a nearby settlement moved all their pigs off their island because of the smell. Forgotten here, the pigs adapted to their new island and were later discovered by tour agencies. Their popularity quickly grew and soon a visit to piggy island was the most sought after trip on earth.
Staniel Cay Day Tours to the Swimming Pigs
The swimming pigs island is not the only attraction worth visiting from Staniel Cay. In fact, there are so many incredible things to see and do in this area, that it really would be worth spending a couple nights here so that you can soak in all the excitement. Staniel Cay Yacht Club offers some of the best accommodation in the Bahamas, with excellent amenities, a private marina and arguably the best bar in the Bahamas.
One of the best things to do from Staniel Cay is to visit Thunderball Grotto. This trip will help you to understand why Staniel Cay is often compared to a James Bond film. Incidentally, Thunderball Grotto actually got its name from the Bond film “Thunderball” due to the fact that some of the scenes were actually shot here. This magnificent submerged cave is an ideal place to visit during your time in Staniel Cay. The entrance is entirely underwater, which means you’ll need to strap on your snorkelling gear and flippers. Swimming through this underwater tunnel is a thrilling experience, but nothing can compare to the feeling of bursting out of the water inside this shimmering cavern and experiencing the beauty that is Thunderball Grotto.
Swimming Pig Island Bahamas is also known as Big Major Cay
If you’d prefer to stay dry, but still want to explore the oceans around Staniel Cay, then you can head south east of the island towards Harvey Cay. Here, at the bottom of the ocean you will find the sunken wreck of a drug smuggler’s plane. The story is that the pilot crashed during a test run where the plane was carrying bags of flour instead of drugs. This fascinating site is sure to leave you with an excellent story to tell everyone back home about your trip to the Bahamas.
If Exuma Pig Island Bahamas only made you want to swim with more curious animals, then a visit to the nearby Compass Cay is for you. At the marina of this pristine island you will find a number of sharks. These are nurse sharks, and are actually a lot more like catfish, however their dorsal fins and immense size make it clear that they are indeed sharks. Nurse sharks are mostly harmless, which means that you can get in the water and swim with them. This school of sharks are considered pets by the owners of the marina, so they are used to humans. Always be cautious when dealing with them, but you can stroke, swim alongside, and even hold these incredible creatures. Compass Cay is an excellent stop on your tour of the Bahamas, and should not be missed!
The animal tours don’t end there! Staniel Cay will also grant you access to Bitter Guana Cay to the south. This island is known for its scaled inhabitants. The Bahamian Rock Iguana resides here, and due to its lack of natural predators, is entirely un-afraid of humans. This means that you can take some excellent close-up shots of these prehistoric creatures on your tour of the Bahamas.
