A Seychelles cruise is a magical experience, especially under sail, with the wind behind you and the azure blue Indian Ocean in front of you while cruising the Seychelles.

For many years, Silhouette Cruises has offered sailing cruises around the Seychelles archipelago. Their ships successfully pioneered the concept of combining the romanticism of a bygone cruising era with modern-day comforts and they make sailing the Seychelles a unique and relaxing experience. See below for one of their cruise itineraries.

The Sailing Yacht Sea Star is a lovely custom built, 3-masted schooner with 5 modern Bermuda sails. Her sister, Sea Bird , is a sleek 2-masted sailing yacht with 4 modern Bermuda sails. Fitted with modern comforts and the most up-to-date navigational equipment, Sea Star and Sea Bird can easily negotiate the inner islands of the Seychelles.

Both Sea Star and Sea Bird comprise 9 cabins with en-suite showers and w/c, salon and dining area. On deck, there are spacious areas for sunbathing, relaxing and dining. For the more energetic and a unique Seychelles cruise experience, the yachts have canoes, snorkelling equipment, paddle board and fishing equipment. The ships provide easy access to the water from their back swimming platforms. Both ships are PADI rated dive centres and carry dive tanks and equipment as well as a dive compressor.

Sailing vessel Sea Pearl is a historic, traditionally-rigged schooner. With simpler facilities than Sea Star and Sea Bird, this boat has just 8 air-conditioned cabins with a wash basin. She operates the itinerary below on selected dates between November and April and also shorter 6 day cruises from Praslin between May and October.

Friday Depart on flight from London.

Saturday Arrive Mahé, the main island in Seychelles, and transfer to inter-island quay at Port Victoria. After a welcome and briefing by the Captain, depart for Round Island off Praslin , Seychelles seond largest island. Evening welcome barbecue.

Sunday Morning free for snorkelling & diving. Afternoon sail to Bay Ste Anne Jetty, Praslin. Guests may disembark to visit Vallée De Mai Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Monday Early morning departure toward La Digue island . After lunch, visit the island, home to the Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher bird and beaches reputed to be some of the most beautiful in the world. Explore La Digue at leisure by bicycle (or possibly oxcart!)

Tuesday A short sail during breakfast along the coast of La Digue to Grand Soeur and Petite Soeur for a visit to these unique uninhabited tropical islands - excellent for snorkelling and diving. Afternoon sail to Coco Island, one of Seychelles' little jewels.

Wednesday Sail to Booby Island for diving and water sports in the morning. After lunch, sail to Aride Island for an afternoon of exploration of the nature reserve.

Thursday Sail to Curieuse Island for a visit through the mangrove forests and the giant tortoise conservation project. The afternoon is for your leisure activities... or simply relaxing on deck!

Friday After breakfast sail towards Mahé , stopping en-route at Ile Seche for the last opportunity to snorkel or dive and a farewell barbecue. Arrive Mahé jetty. Overnight on board.

Saturday Morning disembarkation and transfer to the Kempinski Seychelles (or similar) where a day room has been reserved until your late evening transfer to the airport. Depart on flight back to London.

Silhouette Discovery Cruises

Embark on a Seychelles holiday unlike any other; Silhouette Discovery Cruises provide the platform of adventure, discovery and relaxation. Their cruises allow guests to discover the islands' most exclusive and hard-to-reach places, from tiny granite islets to beautiful hidden coves. All itineraries are ideal for individuals, couples and small families who seek the adventure of a yacht experience without bearing the costs of chartering an entire boat.

We offer a unique approach to discovering the Seychelles by means of three traditional sailing cruise ships, Sea Pearl, Sea Star and Sea Bird, each offering their own style of cruising and exploring the Seychelles. With easy sailing distances between islands, dedicated onboard chefs and fabulous snorkelling, Silhouette Cruises guarantees to give you a taste of the Seychellois life.

All itineraries provide guests with ample opportunity to discover the islands; visiting Valée de Mai on Praslin Island, a BBQ on Curieuse Island or an ox-cart ride on La Digue Island.  Each ship has a PADI dive centre with qualified instructors to provide diving instruction at PADI standards. Clients are also given the opportunity to try their hand at sailing the ships.

This traditional schooner blends the rustic charm of traditional early 1900s schooner with comfortable accommodation and modern amenities. Imbued with her special history, this schooner offers a distinctive true-to-Seychelles island experience. Sea Pearl features eight air-conditioned guest cabins which are cleaned daily. Onboard there is an air-conditioned salon, a covered open-air leisure deck, a padded sundeck and netting on the bow which serve as suspended hammocks for guests to relax and unwind.

S.Y. Sea Star and S.Y. Sea Bird

The Sea Star and Sea Bird are modern custom-built yachts that combine space, conform and authentic hospitality at sea. Both vessels boast nine spacious air-conditioned guest cabins, each with an ensuite bathroom, which are cleaned daily. A number of different areas onboard, from the two-tiered sundeck toward the bow, to the covered back deck and leisure area, ensure ample space for guests to unwind and enjoy this authentic Seychellois adventure.

Embarkation from Anse Possession, Praslin and spend the day at leisure with different water activities in this scenic cove. Final embarkation is followed by a sunset sail to Curieuse Bay and a creole BBQ onboard.

Disembark at Curieuse for a visit of this virtually uninhabited island, to explore its mangrove forest and giant tortoise farm. After a BBQ lunch on the island, enjoy an array of water sports or simply relax and enjoy the island's beautiful beach and turquoise waters.

A morning sail brings the vessel to La Digue, a sleepy island community where ox-carts and bicycles still remain the most common mode of transportation throughout the island. Explore the entire island by bicycle, perhaps stopping by Union Estate, a sprawling network of traditional island activities including a copra mill, vanilla plantation and shipyard.

Sail to Praslin for disembarkation to the famous World Heritage Site, the Valée de Mai nature reserve. Explore the valley's eerie pathways beneath its canopy of massive palms, before returning onboard for afternoon opportunities to dive, snorkel or enjoy other water sports.

Sail towards Cousin Island off the coast of Praslin, for a morning visit of this strictly protected nature reserve, famed for its sea bird colonies and as a sanctuary for Seychelles' rare endemic land birds and other native species. After lunch, the afternoon is yours to spend at leisure or to take advantage of snorkelling and diving opportunities.

Sail to Anse Lazio, one of the most beautiful beach on Praslin and stay to enjoy a day of swimming, snorkelling, water sports or relaxation in one of the most stunning settings in the world. In the evening, enjoy a sunset sail back to Curieuse Bay to soak in the world's only granite ocean islands one last evening.

Sail to Booby Island for a morning of diving and water sports. After lunch, sail to Aride Island, a globally important nature reserve with more native species than any other island, including five endemics, to walk along a spectacular nature trail.

Disembark at Curieuse for a visit of this virtually uninhabited island. Experience the island's vast mangrove forests and giant tortoise farm, along with the historic ruins of this former leper colony. After a BBQ lunch on the island, enjoy an array of water sports or simply relax and enjoy the island's beautiful beach and turquoise waters.

After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely sail back towards Mahé, with a last stop at Ile Seche for more snorkelling or diving, followed by a farewell BBQ. The vessel overnights at St. Anne Marine Park.

Day 1 

Embarkation at the Inter-Island Quay, Mahé and sailing up and around the scenic coastline of Mahé's northern peninsula, past the beautiful bay of Beau Vallon, and along the dramatic backdrop of the northwestern coast of the island.  A creole BBQ dinner is served onboard.

Sail to the beautiful Baie Ternay Marine Park and Nature Reserve on the western coast of Mahé, where calm, crystal clear waters provide for excellant snorkelling and diving during the day. AN afternoon sail back to Beau Vallon Bay positions the vessel in one of the island's best places to watch the countless shades of pink and orange of a Seychelles sunset.

Sail to Praslin for a visit to the famous World Heritage Site, the Vallée de Mai nature reserve.  Explore the valley's eerie pathways beneath its canopy of massive palms, before returning onboard for afternoon opportunities to dive, snorkel or enjoy other water sports.

In the morning, sail back towards Praslin for a visit to the tine, picturesque granite outcrop of St. Pierre, an excellant site for snorkelling and diving, with the nooks and crannies of its granite boulders teeming with marine life. In the afternoon sail to Anse Lazio, one of the most beautiful beaches in Praslin - a perfect place for swimming, snorkelling and other water sports.

Sail towards Cousin Island off the coast of Praslin, for a morning visit of this strictly protected nature reserve, famed for its sea bird colonies and as a sanctuary for Seychelles' rare endemic land birds and other native species. In the afternoon the vessel begins its sail towards Mahé, anchoring overnight in the St.Anne Marine National Park with its cluster of lush granite islands.

Discover the Islands

Mahé island.

With over 65 white sand beaches, Mahé is the main island of the Seychelles with Victoria the charming capital. This verdant granite island enjoys a rich diversity of tropical flora and fauna. Measuring 16 by 4 miles with towering peaks covered with forests, it is an ideal walking and exploring island. Mahé Island is the commercial centre with international banks, supermarkets and small local shops. It was on Mahé that Ian Fleming gained inspiration for his James Bond novel “For Your Eyes Only” at the Hilton Northolme.

La Digue Island

La Digue, the third largest island, measures 3 x 2 miles and is 4 miles from Praslin. La Digue is famous for the incredible sculptured granite rock formations on Source d’Argent beaches. Ox carts and bicycles are the normal mode of transport, reflecting the general pace of life which is gentle and unhurried. The Union Estate boasts a coconut plantation, copra mill, vanilla plantation and Presidential guest house.

Praslin Island

Praslin, the second largest island, measuring 6 x 2.1/2 miles, is home to the Unesco Vallée de Mai site and a number of beautiful beaches such as Anse Lazio. Praslin has a wide range of hotels and the only 18 hole championship golf course in Seychelles. Nearby Curieuse Island is home to 250 breeding giant tortoises as well as ideally situated for short ferry trips to La Digue, Cousin and Aride Island.

Alphonse Island

Located 250 miles from Mahé Island with a 1 hour flight service, Alphonse has a total area of some 4500 acres that includes the island lagoon and surrounding sand flats. A world leading centre for bone-fishing, Alphonse Island is a coral atoll with stunning white sand beaches and a forested interior. The island is protected by a strict conservation programme. Island guests stay in smart beachside bungalows and villas.

Enchanted Island Resort, Round Island, Mahé

A small island, now known as the Enchanted Island Resort. Located 2 miles from Mahe Island it is located within the Marine National Park. This small island has had an interesting history, in the 1800 ‘s once being a detention centre for sufferers of leprosy. After the 2nd world war it became a popular restaurant owned by the Calais family, where Sunday home cooked barbecues were not to be missed.

Cerf Island Mahé

Located 2½ miles off the east coast of Mahé, Cerf Island has an area of 325 acres and has a typically granite topography with a range of small hills along the length of the island, laced by small sandy coves and inlets within the Marine National Park. Cerf is a quiet refuge near to Victoria and has attracted various names such as Wilbur Smith and Bill Travis to live there. Cerf Island Resort, L’Habitation and South Point Villas provide accommodation on the island.

Bird Island

Bird Island is situated 65 miles north of Mahé Island with a wonderful tropical climate. With an area of 250 acres, Bird is a coral cay boasting over 3 miles of soft white sand beaches and home to millions of nesting sooty terns between May and October. It is also an important nesting site for sea turtles. The Island Lodge provides charming bungalow accommodation all year round.

St. Anne Island

Located 2½ miles off Mahé, St.Anne Island is home to the 5 star Beachcomber Resort, within the Marine National Park. One of the first islands to be inhabited in 1770 by Lazare Picault, St.Anne later become a whaling station and in the 2nd World War a re-fuelling depot for the British navy. With a 800ft high granite peak and forested hills & valleys, the island is a fascinating location for walks and exploration.

North Island

Located 17 miles north of Mahé Island, North Island has a ground area of 500 acres with four very attractive sandy beaches. The island is of a granite type with peaks and valleys making for an interesting island for walks and exploration. The island is part of a conservation programme protecting the islands flora and fauna. Guests arrive by either helicopter or boat (weather permitting), staying in luxury beachside villas with a butler to look after their every fancy.

Frégate Island

Frégate Island is 26 miles from Mahé island and is the home to a striking luxury hotel Frégate Island Private. This beautiful granite island of 500 acres has seven beautiful beaches, with Anse Victorin beach recently voted the world’s best. Renowned for its varied bio-diversity and over 2200 giant tortoises the island’s accommodation philosophy is that of sustainability and being at one with nature.

Denis Island

Denis Island is situated 37 miles north of Mahé, with an area of 350 acres. Denis Island is a coral cay shaped almost like that of a tear-drop. Being a cay, the island has beautiful soft sandy beaches with a densely forested hinterland with walks and cycleways. The Denis Island Lodge accommodates guests within its chalet style bungalows. The island farm produces the majority of the island’s food including vegetables and meat, and fresh fish from the surrounding ocean.

Aride Island

Known as the finest seabird island in the western Indian Ocean , Aride Island is an essential part of the itinerary for any visitor to Seychelles. Aride hosts one of the most important seabird populations in the Indian Ocean with more breeding species than any other island in Seychelles. The island is managed as a nature reserve by the  Island Conservation Society  , a UK Registered Charity Aride Island is open to visitors and visits can be arranged by Seychelles Travel.

Curieuse Island

Curieuse island is a small granitic island close to the north coast of Praslin and now part of Curieuse Marine National Park. Home to more than 300 giant tortoises who roam the island at will. The island is notable for its bare red earth with Coco de Mer palms scattered around. The beach is a popular resting place for visitors enjoying a day’s excursion, whilst a volunteer group studies fish, turtle and coral numbers.

Cousin Island

Cousin Island, located 1 mile from Praslin Island is under the auspices of Bird Life International and designated as a Special Reserve. Cousin Island is not only significant for sea birds and endemic land birds but also an important site for Hawksbill Turtles. The Island is the home to the Brush Warbler, the Seychelles Fody, and Seychelles Turtle Dove. The Magpie Robin has recently been introduced. Also found are Audubon's Shearwaters, Bridled Terns, Brown and Black Noddies.

Silhouette Island

As its name suggests, Silhouette Island, when viewed from Mahé Island, a distance of 12 miles, sits boldly to the northern horizon shaped majestically like a craggy mountain top. Five granite peaks in total form the silhouette, within an area of 5000 acres. The island supports three small villages and two hotels, the Hilton Labriz and the Bell Tortue Lodge. Dramatic walks and pathways criss-cross the island making the location an attractive venue for flora and fauna observers.

Félicité Island

Félicité Island is a small heavy forested granitic island 4 kilometres east of La Digue island. Up until the 1970s it was a coconut plantation with a population of about 50 people. Six Senses Zil Pasyon Luxury Resort is now located on Félicité, where massive granite rocks and white sand beaches create an air of drama and beauty. Silhouette Cruises, established in 1997 with one traditional motor-assisted sailing vessel, expanded over a 10-year period to develop a four-ship motor-sailer fleet at two different price levels to cruise amongst several granite-based islands and the oldest of their type in the world. British General Charles Gordon (aka Gordon of Khartoum) considered them to be the Garden of Eden.

The ships sail year-round from Mahé, the main island and the island chain’s capital, where you’ll find the international air and seaport. The Seychelles are located in the Indian Ocean east of East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania), northeast of Madagascar, and southwest of India. Until 1971, the islands were accessed by ship once or twice a month from Mombasa or Bombay, and during that period, visited by very few tourists, maybe a thousand a year.

The Indian Ocean is blessed with two outstanding island archipelagos — the Seychelles and Maldives — for small-ship cruising interisland and for taking up a variety of activities such as diving, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking and swimming. You can also choose to do little or nothing if you can resist all the temptations of this pair of tropical paradises. And yes, they are far far away from just about everything.

The line’s name comes from Silhouette Island, a popular eye-catching island rising from the sea off Beau Vallon on the main island of Mahé.

International English-speaking clientele of all ages with a mix of interests — serious and novice divers and sailors, active types, and those who like “take it or leave it” activities.

Itineraries

Year – round cruising of 6 and 7 nights from Port Victoria on Mahé to several out islands and atolls. The island of Praslin is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site and noted for giant Coco de Mer (palms trees) and the island of La Digue is known for giant tortoises and beautiful beaches framed by granite outcroppings that are also found on coral atolls.

The local inhabitants are multi-cultural. with the French being the first European power to rule the archipelago and then the British, until independence in 1976. Between them, the two nations are responsible for bringing Africans, South Asian, Southeast Asians, and Chinese to the islands.

A few departures have specific themes such as diving, sea kayaking and natural history.

The main attractions are remoteness and the sheer beauty of the seascapes, coral atolls, fine sandy beaches, granite outcroppings, tropical vegetation, birds and marine life, appealing climate and unique attractions such as the coco de mer and tortoises.

When to Go?

The islands have no extremes with the average high temperature varying between 85-89F and lows 79-83F. Slightly more rain falls November to January.

SEA SHELL & SEA PEARL, the heritage pair, have both double bed and twin-bedded cabins with extra bunks and shared shower facilities, while SEA STAR & SEA BIRD have double-bed cabins and some with an extra bed or bunk and private shower facilities. The latter pair have A/C in cabins.

Public Rooms

As these vessels sail in tropical climes, the waking hours are spent out of doors with the lounge/bar and dining area used at meal times, and if there is a rain shower or squall.

All vessels have an air-conditioned dining saloon and STAR and BIRD have A/C lounges. All offer on deck outdoor seating areas, including covered sections. TV, DVD, washing machines and dryers on all vessels.

Mealtimes are shared at open sittings with buffet-served meals.

While the Seychelles are relatively remote islands, they do produce lots of fruit, some vegetables, and lots of fish and shellfish. Menus are international and creole.

Activities & Entertainment

Serious and novice diving comes with an instructor, plus there’s snorkeling, kayaking, standup paddle boarding, bottom fishing, sailing instruction, and cruising into colorful marine parks, isolated bays and coves.

Enjoy short hikes to beauty spots, mangrove forests, birding, a vanilla plantation, copra mill, former leper colony, Vallee de Mai for coco de mer, and of course, good ‘ole fashioned beach bumming.

Special Notes

Given the long trek to get there and the expense involved, a visit to the Seychelles may include extra days at a beach resort or planning a completely different add-on such as an East African game park safari in Kenya or Tanzania.

Silhouette Island is located approx 20 km (12 mi) northwest of Mahe Island , Seychelles. It is ranked the country's 3rd largest island, with total area approx 20 km2 (8 mi2) and population under 300. The island's main settlement (La Passe) has a Hilton Hotel (Hilton Seychelles Labriz).

The island is mountainous, with 5 peaks over 500 m (1600 ft). The highest elevation point (Mt Dauban) is 751 m (2464 ft) above sea level. This also makes Silhouette one of Seychelles islands with most dramatic scenery.

In 1609, the crew of the ship Ascension (owned by the East India Company) were the first Europeans to step on the island.

From the mid-19th century until 1960, the island was privately owned (by the Dauban family, from France). In 1830 they settled in Mauritius. Here, the Daubans developed extensive plantations. Their extensive business ventures earned it the family the nickname "Rothschilds of the Indian Ocean".

The era of the Daubans came to an end after Henri Dauban sold the island to a French group, which in 1983 sold it to Seychelles. A small hotel was built, later replaced by Labriz Resort (soon acquired by Hilton Hotels and Resorts). Dauban's plantation house was restored.

Silhouette Island has some of the richest biodiversities in the western Indian Ocean, with many endemic and threatened species of animals and plants. Among them is the critically endangered Coleura seychellensis (Seychelles sheath-tailed bat. In 1987, the surrounding waters were declared Marine National Park. In 2010 was founded the Silhouette National Park, protecting 93% of the island's land area. The island is also designated IBA (Important Bird Area).
