St. Petersburg’s thrifting scene is so good, they come by the busload

  • Sara DiNatale Former Times Staffer

ST. PETERSBURG — Patti Clark stood at the front of 60-seat coach bus with a microphone in hand.

“Okay, resale queens," she shouted, "that was a great shop. Wasn’t it?”

Rows of smiling faces cheered and clapped in agreement. A few stragglers stood outside the 40-foot bus, loading their hauls into the undercarriage. The rest sat cozy in their seats, clutching totes filled with home decor, clothing and other knickknacks.

For the last four years, Clark has led bus tours around Florida at $60 a ticket. But there are no stops at the beach or visits to the state’s famous theme parks.

Instead, the people on board have a specific mission: to thrift, bargain and find a mix of great deals and vintage treasures. As more and more people find out about the “Mystery Resale Shopping Bus Tours,” the quicker they sell out.

Resale and secondhand shopping is having a major moment. The number of resale shops — from vintage boutiques to nonprofit charity shops — has grown 7 percent in each of the past two years, according to the Association of Resale Professionals. Even major retailers are partnering with online thrift and consignment stores to get in on the action.

But Clark’s Mystery Tours may be among the most creative resale oriented businesses. Clark maps out thrift and vintage shop stops along a route that usually focuses around one city or region. She slots out about an hour for each shop, meticulously planning everything long before her shoppers hop on board. Each trip has a catered lunch, door prizes and raffles.

The trips often launch in Venice, where Clark lives. From there, the bus stops at designated pickup points on its way to that day’s city. Clark just launched the St. Petersburg route, which featured shops such as the Market at Left Bank, Bungaleaux on Central and the local Goodwill. The tickets sold out in 29 minutes.

“I was in the shower and I heard bells,” Clark said. “I couldn’t figure out what it was.”

It was the email alerts as her inbox quickly filled with ticket sales. The new route and St. Pete’s thriving thrift scene appealed to Clark’s loyal clientele. Some of the women on the most recent tour lived as close as Sarasota, but had never explored St. Pete’s thrift shops and vintage boutiques.

Kathleen Johnson slid two boxes of like-new brightly colored fiesta silverware in front of the cashier at the Market at Left Bank. Johnson, a retired Spanish teacher from Sarasota, was spending the day searching for housewarming gifts for a friend who just purchased a new bungalow.

Just outside the shop, women sipped free coffee and champagne. They mingled, laughed and talked about past and upcoming trips with the bus tour: Fort Myers, Bradenton and Punta Gorda.

“So where are you off to next?” the cashier, Teyka Steh , asked Johnson as she placed the silverware in a large paper bag.

“We don’t know,” Johnson said, laughing. “They don’t tell us.”

It’s all part of the fun, Clark said. Keeping the route stops a surprise makes the journey feel even more like a treasure hunt. The bus stops at other cities to pick up thrifters along the way to the destination. On the road, they watch movies on bus TV screens, munch on popcorn and sip wine coolers.

Clark estimates her trips pump about $10,000 total into the local shops they visit on any given trip. She calls her company and its newspaper about the state’s best thrift shops and vintage stores the Happy Thrifter.

The recent St. Pete tour was mostly made up of retired women, though Clark said some trips have had younger people. One of her favorite shoppers was a 91-year-old man named Arthur. Her most loyal shopper has been on 16 trips. Some are seeking gifts, others their own goodies or items they may be able sell for a profit online or in their own stores.

Clark runs trips regularly between November and May. Her next one is March 12 through Bonita Springs and Naples. She always does them on Thursday, when shops aren’t as busy, so the focus can be on her crew of resale queens.

While at the Bungaleaux, a woman who goes by “High Hair Mare” shouted down the shop’s stairs to Maria Dicicco , a Nokomis jewelry maker. Mare had found a red purse with intricate beading.

“She knew I’d love it,” Dicicco said. “For $15? I asked where the other zero was.”

Diccio also held on to a leather belt that was branded with “Oldsmobile," another inexpensive find. Meanwhile, Sandra Martin from Siesta Key found a couple of designer skirts and jewelry she was happy to splurge on.

Maggie Ory opened the Bungaleaux about four years ago. She noticed the appetite for vintage growing.

“People want quality,” she said. “If you go to Ikea, you’re getting particle board. People like one-of-a-kind vintage.”

Ory has held her own customer appreciation events, but she has never hosted a busload of new shoppers. She put out wine, cheese and crackers and opened the shop a little earlier than normal.

Before she started the bus tours, Clark would point out thrifting honey pots to close friends. They were always impressed with her accumulated knowledge of the best spots.

“I’d joke, ‘One of these days, I’m going to load you all up on a bus and take you to them all,’" she said.

Eventually, she realized that was actually a good idea.

Thrift store bus tours Utah, gaining social media street cred

By sky mundell, ksl.com | posted - feb. 18, 2024 at 12:19 p.m., collin mclaughlin and friends pose for a photo atop their increasingly popular vintage retail space housed in a school bus. they drive the bus around utah, bringing with them a unique shopping experience. (not a thrift store).

Estimated read time: 6-7 minutes

SPANISH FORK — A hybrid social-shopping experience run out of a school bus is gaining notoriety among young Utahns for its ability to offer a unique vintage clothing shopping experience.

From being temporarily shut down by the police to experiencing spikes in business that have left them without inventory to sell at times, the ironically named Not A Thrift Store has experienced its fair share of bumps in the road. However, this hasn't stopped its young operators from working long days and nights to expand their brand of kindness, inclusivity and vintage clothing.

Kaysen Stevens, a young entrepreneur from Spanish Fork, purchased his first school bus at the age of 15, after selling homemade caramel apples door to door, with the intention of using the bus as a hangout space for him and his friends. He had no clue then that he would go on to use the bus to start a mobile thrift store that would go on to sell upwards of 300-500 pieces of clothing in every city it parks in.

Initially, the plan was to use the renovated bus as an Airbnb rental when he and his friends weren't using it; however, he quickly discovered that he wasn't equipped financially to seriously renovate the dilapidated bus. Last year, Stevens said that the idea came to him to begin selling clothes that he'd been meaning to get rid of out of the bus to raise money to renovate the bus into a rental space.

"I've always wanted to open up a thrift store, and I had this bus, I had my brick-and-mortar, and so I thought I could throw up some hangers and sell some clothes to raise money for this Airbnb project," said Stevens.

"At first it was super slow," he said. "I'd be sitting in the bus for three to four hours with no one coming in. I was posting on TikTok and one day, one of the TikToks blew up and there was this massive line that formed."

Eventually, the spot became so popular and had caused so much foot traffic in Stevens' neighborhood that the police intervened, telling Stevens that he was not allowed to run such a big business in a residential area. Summing up the situation, Stevens said that the thrift bus had become "bigger than a lemonade stand."

In October 2023, he was able to purchase another school bus, which unlike the first one that had remained parked in his backyard, was able to run. He began taking the bus to different cities every week and acting as a mobile thrift store — ironically called "Not A Thrift Store" — ultimately attracting a formidable following with over 52,000 followers on its Instagram page and over 11,000 followers on its TikTok page.

Now 19, Stevens has left primary operation of the thrift bus to his older brother, Trae Stevens, and a fan-turned-employee, Collin McLaughlin, who tour around in the bus, stopping at different cities every week. Stevens, meanwhile, works out of state selling solar services door to door to help raise funds to expand his Not a Thrift Store business and a suite of future businesses that the young entrepreneur hopes to run one day.

The Stevens brothers and McLaughlin said the mobile thrift store has grown into more than just a retail operation. They see an opportunity to make the pop-up thrift store into a communal experience where people can meet each other and hang out while shopping for vintage clothing.

"It's cool traveling to different cities and seeing how people take it in," said Trae Stevens, adding that smaller towns especially are really eager to have the thrift bus come into town. "It's cool to bring people together and bring excitement to these different towns."

For having only been mobile for four months, the Not a Thrift Store bus has covered an impressive amount of ground, having visited more than 15 cities in Utah, with that number steadily increasing by the week.

Kaysen Stevens said in the near future, he wants to collaborate with local food trucks and communities to build the Not A Thrift Store brand by holding communal events that draw people with similar interests together to socialize and enjoy fun events together.

"We want to make our own merch and sell it," said McLaughlin, with the three saying that Not A Thrift Store branded merchandise is on its way and should premiere in the coming months.

In addition to expanding their ability to bring communities together and making their own merchandise, the Stevens brothers and McLaughlin said that they are planning to eventually visit cities outside of Utah as their online following grows and commenters from all parts of the U.S. plead with the young entrepreneurs to visit their city.

Trae Stevens explained that the Not A Thrift Store brand is currently focused on being more "purpose-based," adding that they are currently working on an anti-bullying campaign with the working title of "a seat for everyone."

Trae Stevens said that the campaign and the brand's focus on promoting a "pro-kindness" culture is important to the Stevens brothers because it is a way to honor their grandmother, Jeneal "Jeanie" Stevens, a school bus driver who was killed in an accident in 2001 while driving the Bear River High School basketball team to an away game. She had to make evasive maneuvers to try to avoid a collision with a semitruck after encountering an unexpected traffic blockage, safely guiding the bus into an embankment but sustaining injuries that would claim her life.

"She was very well known for being kind, and we want to take her purpose and continue it," said Trae Stevens, explaining that their grandmother never tolerated any sort of bullying on her school bus.

Members of the community consider Jeanie Stevens to be a hero and credit her with successfully maneuvering the school bus to avoid an accident that could've been much more fatal for the 50 students and staff on board. A park in Tremonton has since been named in her honor.

For the founder and operators of the Not a Thrift Store bus, the business isn't just a way to build their entrepreneurial careers but a way to bring joy, excitement and friendship to the communities that it visits.

Vanessa Stevens, Trae and Kaysen's mother, says she is very proud of what her sons are doing with their business. Early on in the Stevens boys' lives, they worked alongside their mother in a boutique candy shop that was operated by the family — hence why Kaysen Stevens later turned to selling homemade caramel apples to raise the money he needed to buy the school bus that would start it all.

"I'm super proud of them," said Vanessa Stevens about her sons. "They're so driven, smart and successful — they're awesome boys."

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

Get discounts for the Big Bus Tour NYC  here .

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

Did Harris-Walz Campaign 'Stage' Pennsylvania Restaurant Photo Op with 'Paid Actors'?

The harris-walz campaign's bus tour through western pennsylvania on aug. 18, 2024, ended with a rumor about a stop at a primanti bros. sandwich shop., jordan liles, published aug. 22, 2024.

A rumor circulating online during the U.S. presidential election in mid-August 2024 claimed the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz campaign "kicked out" diners eating at the popular sandwich shop Primanti Bros. in Moon Township, just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to have a "staged" photo op involving "paid actors," who the campaign allegedly transported to the establishment in white vans visible in videos shared on social media. We received reader mail asking about this matter.

In our research and correspondence with sources described throughout this article, we learned the Harris-Walz campaign or someone else reserved the restaurant for the evening of Aug. 18, 2024. Reporting published by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette before the campaign motorcade's arrival described the upcoming stop as a "private party." The reporting quoted a "SWAT member" on-site who said that, following the attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump in nearby Butler, Secret Service personnel locked down the site, moved all cars away and "vetted" people entering the building.

We also learned more about the aforementioned white vans and have yet to find any credible evidence of involvement from "paid actors." Even so, we noted some reporting in online articles simply referring to the people seated at tables as "diners" as well as some of Harris' own social media posts not providing context about a photo taken inside the restaurant, as if the photo op occurred organically.

To start our investigation, we contacted the headquarters for Primanti Bros. by phone, email, Messenger and X but did not receive any responses. The company also did not post on its Facebook, Instagram or X accounts in the days following the campaign stop. We also reached out to the U.S. Secret Service, numerous officials associated with the Harris-Walz campaign and reporters who were part of the press pool at the restaurant.

Secret Service spokesperson Alexi Worley told Snopes by phone that the white vans were part of the Secret Service's motorcade, "transporting members of the campaign staff and press." As for the people seated inside the restaurant, campaign spokesperson Daniel Wessel told us via email, "I can confirm it was a volunteer appreciation event." Further, a local reporter who was on the scene also provided similar details, which we will go into later in this story.

Popular Posts Promoting the Rumor

Users began spreading this rumor on X at the end of a day filled with stops in the battleground state, in which U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz traveled together on a campaign bus to several locations, including meeting with volunteers at a campaign office, greeting firefighters at a firehouse and visiting with members of a high school football team.

For example, one user's popular post on X ( archived ) claimed that "every single customer was kicked out and replaced with actors," while another person's similarly popular post ( archived ) read, "Trump supporters and paying customers were kicked out of a restaurant to make room for Kamala 'supporters.'"

These and several other prominent posts featured a video of Trump supporters shouting at the Harris-Walz motorcade as it arrived at the restaurant. One person in the video ( archived ) shouted, "They kicked us out of Primanti Bros. because they said it was a private event!" This mention of a "private event" aligned with other information we located in our research. Another person said, "They kicked us out of Primanti Bros. so that they could get the paid actors inside."

A different user's post ( archived ) featured a second video recorded from the same location showing another campaign bus and numerous dark SUVs, and also a photo of an empty parking lot at the restaurant.

Eyewitness Insight and White Vans

Ryan Deto, a reporter for the western Pennsylvania publication TribLIVE.com , who was at the restaurant that day, told us in an email, "The people inside the restaurant were campaign volunteers who were there to meet with Harris, Walz and their spouses." He added he believed this campaign-volunteer aspect was "evident" to him upon his and the rest of the press pool's arrival at the restaurant, which occurred in the white vans mentioned in posts promoting the rumor.

Again, Worley, the Secret Service spokesperson, also told us by phone that the white vans were part of the Secret Service's motorcade, "transporting members of the campaign staff and press."

At least four journalists posted photos taken from the white vans showing the same group of Trump supporters visible in the popular videos on X. Deto was one of those journalists:

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Reports in Advance About 'Private Party'

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported at 5:12 p.m. EDT, 90 minutes before the campaign motorcade's arrival at the restaurant, "Allegheny County's SWAT team stood guard outside of a Moon Township Primanti Bros. ahead of a 'private party' scheduled for 4 p.m. that was rumored to include Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz."

The reporting from 5:12 p.m. also added, "According to another SWAT member, the Secret Service, under scrutiny since the attempted assassination of Donald Trump in Butler, is locking down the site well in advance of Ms. Harris' arrival, moving all cars out of the lot and only allowing people who've been vetted inside the building."

Syndicated AP Story Simply Called Supporters 'Diners'

Even with all of this information, we noted some online articles reporting on the campaign stop still referred to the people seated at restaurant tables, either within their stories or photo captions, simply as "diners," as if the event were organic. The people attending the private function were dining but the context of their visit constitutes more than such a word.

For example, The Associated Press called the people seated at tables "diners," with a later part in the story also mentioning the importance of "[scoring] face time with voters in small venues like diners and mom-and-pop shops." An AP photo caption also referred to them as "customers."

ABC News , NBC New York and numerous other local TV news websites and newspapers syndicated the AP's story.

Similarly, Harris' Facebook and Instagram pages each featured a post including photo of her shaking a person's hand inside the restaurant, with no mention of the gathering involving campaign volunteers or a private party. A separate post on her Facebook page did mention volunteers but did not show a picture of the Primanti Bros. visit.

Samuel DeMarco III, a Republican serving as at-large council representative for Allegheny County who appeared to often share his support of Trump, posted ( archived ) later in the day, "Hey, let's all cut [Primanti Bros.] a break regarding their asking customers to leave to prepare for the Kamala Harris photo-op. Oftentimes campaigns rent out a place of business for a private party or particular event. Perhaps that's what happened here? Anyway, I like a good Primanti's Bros 'hot & cheese' sandwich so let's cut them a break."

DeMarco had posted ( archived ) earlier in the day about the campaign stop, sharing the video reposted by many other users.

Video and Photos Captured Inside the Restaurant

In Fox News ' reporting of the Harris-Walz bus tour's stop at Primanti Bros., a reporter interviewed a patron who said the restaurant's bartender announced "last call" at 3:30 p.m. due to a "private event" starting "at the top of the hour." The article also mentioned restaurant staff or someone else turned televisions off, seeing as they were closing soon.

The Dallas TV station WFAA posted raw footage on YouTube credited to ABC News, showing Harris, Walz and second gentleman Doug Emhoff walking from table to table. At the 4:07 mark in the video, the videographer follows instructions for members of the press to move left and around the empty and closed bar area to find a better vantage and to allow the candidates space to greet people seated at the tables.

In the video, just as the Fox News story mentioned, all visible televisions appear off in the empty bar area and the rest of the restaurant, as one might see at other private events held inside bars and restaurants. In other words, people seated at tables occupied a specific section of the closed restaurant, all in view of the press pool, which featured local and national reporters and photojournalists.

Kunal Atit, whose X bio mentioned he's the Pennsylvania deputy campaign manager for Harris, posted ( archived ) a photo showing Harris greeting people at tables. Again, all visible televisions were turned off. On the far left side of Atit's picture, a person in the background can be seen wearing a "Kamala" hat.

As the ABC News footage and Atit photo both showed, some of the people seated at the tables appeared to dress for the occasion of meeting Harris and Walz, in blazers, dress shirts and at least one woman wearing a blue dress. Other people wore more casual attire.

We will update this story if we receive further details or correspondence regarding this rumor.

Esso, Kamchatka

Among the remarkable places of Kamchatka, there is a small village of Esso, located in the central part of the peninsula. Two rivers merge here, and the settlement itself appeared in the caldera of an extinct volcano. Located on the highlands, surrounded by thermal springs, larch taiga, this village is an environmentally pristine corner of the Earth, where air and water endow with healing powers.

Why Esso is Attractive for Tourists

The charm of a small village irresistibly affects those who come here. Amazing purity of air, a specific mild flavor of water, an atmosphere of peace and goodwill surprise people. The usual state of the atmosphere is calmness; especially in winter, one can notice the pacifying silence, which is unusual for urban residents. It has a dry microclimate and many sunny days. Esso is very beautiful in winter and summer. The surrounding mountain landscape resembles alpine views.

Right in the middle of the village, there is a large outdoor pool with thermal springs, which does not freeze even in cold weather. Someone is always swimming here. Hot springs are geared not only for healing purposes but also for growing vegetables and berries (including strawberries) in greenhouses and for heating homes.

The village was officially named Esso in 1932. They believed that this word is the name of the Bystraya River in Even or the distorted "isag", which means larch. However, linguists do not agree with such interpretations. According to the latest version, the name of the village came from the Koryak "echot", i. e. flooring from rods in the snow. Life in Esso runs slowly. There is a developed infrastructure with a post office, a bank, schools (including a music one and a craft school), a kindergarten, a winter sports complex, a bus station, and an airfield. There is a waste recycling plant, as well.

On the outskirts of the village, along the right bank of the Uksichan, hot springs burst forth out of the earth. Their temperature reaches 65 above Celsius. The composition of water is sulfate, calcium, and sodium.

Ethnographic Museum in Esso

In this small settlement, there are two unique museums. Ethnographic Museum was opened in 1988 and is dedicated to the culture of the indigenous peoples of Kamchatka. Its interesting and varied exhibits impress everyone who visited it. It is located both in buildings and in the open. The main part of the exhibits is located in a house built in the architectural traditions of the government office of the XVII-XVIII centuries. Cossack explorers lived, who mastered the Kamchatka Territory, lived in such burgs. In addition to the government office, there is a specially built defense tower, a Koryak semi-basement dwelling, and a booth, an exhibition hall in the museum.

Koryak dwelling was built in 2003 and is a reconstruction of the historical object of the XIX century. Since time immemorial, Koryaks lived in such houses, the peculiar form of which is reflected in the museum version.

In the government office, there is a detailed exposition devoted to the Evenki culture. Here, you can see the rites and traditions of these people, see how people lived, what they ate, what they wear. The shamanistic staff creates a strong impression. These things contain the mysterious power of ancient magic. There are also musical instruments, as well as various artifacts, thanks to which you can get a good idea of Evenki culture. These items were collected from camps during several ethnographic expeditions.

The museum has a local history department, introducing the flora and fauna of the Bystrinsky District, which, due to its unique natural characteristics, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the exhibition hall, you can see samples of the applied art of Kamchatka masters. These products are created from bone, wood, and fur; bead sewing is a popular element of their decoration. Souvenirs are sold right there.

Museum workers do all their best to present the museum in the most favorable light. During the excursions, they use slide shows, there are special places for memorable photos, and there are concerts of folk ensembles in the museum (you should make a special order). Museum visitors can visit the real bone carver workshop and get a wood carving master class.

Another popular museum in Esso is entirely dedicated to bears. This animal is the master of Kamchatka, which has totemic significance for local peoples. The Bear Museum was founded in 1999 at the library. Now, it occupies one small room though the exposition is located outside it, as well, in the courtyard, where there are wooden sculptures. A large exhibit, a stuffed bear, attracts attention. There are skulls and a cast of a bear’s footprint, a lot of various exhibits dedicated to the main hero. The photo department is also interesting; the taliped is captured from all angles and in different situations. There are books, albums, videos about bears – you can see all this in the museum.

Esso in Winter

Winter in the village is a time of interesting events and pleasant pastimes, so many people come here at this time of year. Frosts are not crackling; the proximity of the ocean softens the climate. The average temperature is approximately 16 above Celsius, the coldest month is January with 18 below zero. Fans of winter entertainment will find a variety of activities here.

A feature of these places is non-freezing thermal springs. The natural pool with hot water does not cool even in severe frosts. Bathing in it in the winter is an exotic, incomparable experience. There are snows all around, the majestic nature as if frozen in white hibernation and in the middle of an open reservoir, people are happily splashing – this picture is a reality in Esso.

For those who wish to ride the tundra by snowmobiles, such entertainment is also available. Fans of hunting (with hunting license) can try to get hares, partridges, foxes. There is a hunting lodge at a distance of 25 km from Esso.

In winter, there are two interesting events in Esso; many tourists plan their arrival for these dates. It is about the Reindeer Herder's Festival and Beringia dog sled race. Usually, they are held at the end of February or in March, which is a real winter month here.

Reindeer Herder's Festival

This is an annual holiday with a long-standing tradition. Reindeer herders not only from neighboring villages come here; guests come from far away. They gather in a large circle and discuss their affairs and prospects for reindeer husbandry. Officials always come to the holiday, as well; everything is well-managed and everyone works in unison. People have a tremendous time. According to ancient traditions, the ceremony of offering to the fire Ulekich is the first part of the holiday, then an Evenki yurt is put up and anyone can enter as a guest.

The holiday is combined with competitions in traditional northern sports: throwing a chout (lasso made of deerskin) on a harray (long pole used to drive a team of reindeer), running with a stick in the mountains, jumping over sledges, throwing an ax, triple jumping with simultaneous kicking off with two legs. Competitions are held in the gym of the local school or in the open air. An integral part of the holiday program is the reindeer sleigh race. Usually, about a dozen sleds are involved, the show is exciting and gambling. There are National wrestling competitions, as well. Spectators gather in a circle, inside, there are wrestlers. Before they close, they rub with snow.

In addition to the sports component and the exchange of experience, Reindeer Herder's Festival is also a festival of folk art. National ensembles perform; handicrafts are sold. Guests treat themselves to tea with flatbread and shurpa. The fun lasts up to three days.

Beringia Sled Dog Race in Kamchatka

The traditional dog sled race Beringia dates back to 1990. Then the magazine “Northern vast expenses” first came up with such an initiative, secured the support of the All-Union Fund of the Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East and organized the first competition. There were only eight participants, and they covered 250 km. The following year, the length of the route was the largest in the history of racing – 1,980 km, which was started in the Guinness World Records. After that, the length of the route was established at 1,100 km.

The feature and attractiveness of Beringia is that there is no age qualification. Elderly mushers (dog team drivers) also participate; to see the work of the experienced people is a good reason for younger people to adopt centuries-old dog management techniques. Animal participants are not specially bred sports dogs. They are ordinary northern dogs that continue to work at other times, as their predecessors have been done for centuries in these parts. However, during the competition, dogs have to overcome almost double distance per day compared to their usual way.

The route runs along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk through the Sredinny Range to the east. On the racetrack, competitors visit 12 villages and towns, including Esso. In each locality, a meeting of mushers becomes a holiday – people dress up in national costumes and arrange concerts of ethnographic groups. Beringia participants do not just compete, the race also has the practical meaning as books, school and sports equipment are delivered to the settlements. Dog teams overcome mountains and tundra, cross numerous rivers until they reach the finish line.

Summer Holidays in Esso

In summer, this corner of Kamchatka is no less interesting. All the unique beauty of the region appears in the summer period in all its glory. Therefore, it is recommended that at the peak of this season (July-August) you take care of housing in advance by booking a place in a hotel or by agreeing with the owners of private houses that rent rooms.

Summer weather is mild, with average June temperatures of 8.5 above Celsius, July – 12.4 above zero, August – +11.0 °C. But there are also much hotter days, up to +30 °C.

For tourists, there are special trails around the village along which you can walk or ride on horses. Such routes last from one to four days. Natural attractions in the most beautiful surroundings make such trips memorable. After climbing the extinct volcano Olengende (almost 2 km high), you can admire the stunning view. The distance from the village to the Sopka is 10 km. Eight kilometers away, there is Alney – the peak of the Sredinny Range (2600 m).

There are mountain lakes Ikar and Galyamiki. Klyuchevskaya group of volcanoes is relatively close to Esso, as well. Ascending Plosky Tolbachik is a favorite activity of tourists who have arrived here. They go where the past eruptions left their fantastic traces resembling alien landscapes.

Water sports enthusiasts have an opportunity to raft along the Bystraya River. They have enough opportunities to show their skills and courage – the Bystraya has 12 thresholds of varying degrees of difficulty, you can overcome some of them only under the guidance of experienced masters. The river is also famous for its fish, so fans of fishing will feel here like in paradise.

How to Get to Esso

It takes 7-10 hours with stops to get here from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky by car. The road is long, not smooth, but stunning views around will be the completion of this inconvenience.

The fastest way to get to the village is by helicopter MI-8; the flight lasts 2 hours. From the air, the magnificence of the opening picture seems fantastic. However, the price of such a trip is very high.

Tourists can get the necessary information in the visitor center. For your convenience, there are signs pointing to the main attractions throughout the village. In the center of the village, there is a large map, which clearly shows all the places worth visiting and routes around the neighborhood. There are several hotels in Esso; their price range is different. Many tourists stay in private houses both because it is cheaper and because often there are no more places in hotels. After all, this small peculiar village in Kamchatka attracts people, and having been here once, they return again and again.

The Essential Kamchatka Travel Guide

Home / Russia Travel Experiences / The Essential Kamchatka Travel Guide

If you’re the type of traveller who tends to avoid the well-trodden path in search of one-of-a-kind adventure experiences, Kamchatka should be at the top of your bucket list. We are proud to share this essential Kamchatka travel guide with you, enjoy the journey!

Kamchatka is a 1,250km (780 miles) long peninsula in Russia’s far east, geographically closer to Alaska than to Moscow. Due to its remoteness, the peninsula is rarely visited by foreigners, yet the region has an immense amount to offer determined travellers, including over 300 volcanoes (29 of which are still active). But Kamchatka isn’t all just impenetrable mountains and barren lava fields. The landscape is a mosaic of tundra, deciduous forest and pristine waterways, while its Pacific coastline supports a remarkable abundance of wildlife. One of the reasons Kamchatka has such a well-preserved natural environment is because less than 400,000 people inhabit the entire peninsula. In 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Westerners and other outsiders were permitted for the first time in over half a century to visit Kamchatka, one of the most mysterious regions of the former Soviet empire. Kamchatka isn’t the easiest place to get to, but that’s what makes it so special.

Below we’ve revealed some of the peninsula’s most spectacular natural attractions, proving that Kamchatka is the ultimate adventure travel destination.

Kluchevskoy Nature Park

Included in the UNESCO World Heritage site – “ Volcanoes of Kamchatka “, Klyuchevskoy Nature Park in Eastern Kamchatka, covers an area of 376,000 ha with Eurasia’s most grand and active Klyuchevksaya group of volcanoes in its centre. It consists of 13 volcanoes, including 4 active: Klyuchevskay Sopka, Plosky Tolbachik, Besymyanny, Ushkovsky; and 9 extinct ones: Kamen, Krestovsky, Ostry Tolbachik, Ovalnaya Zimina, Ostraya Zimina, Bolshaya Udina, Malaya Udina, Sredny, and Gorny Zoub.

With Kamchatka’s largest river running through it, the park is unique for its dense concentration of giant volcanoes over a relatively small area, attracting scientists, photographers , trekkers and mountain climbers from all around the globe. Getting to the park is not so easy, with a full day drive (550 km /10-12h) from Paratunka to Kozyrevsk village, with overnight there in wooden cabins or in tents; and additional short drive (2-3h) on the next day in order to reach Klyuchi village. The route is on unsealed and bumpy roads, but it really worth it!

Located in the centre of Klyuchevksoy Nature Park,  Kluchevskaya Sopka volcano  (4,750m) is the highest in Eurasia. With its steep, symmetrical cone, covered with snow throughout the year, it’s one of the park’s most photogenic sites. It is a cone-shaped volcano, that can be climbed from all sides. The tours organised only for experienced alpinists are usually 7-10 days duration (including transfers to the park and back), and they include not only ascending Klychevsakaya Sopka volcano but also trekking the glaciers.

Recent Klyuchevskaya eruptions took place in 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015, offering amazing photo opportunities and breathtaking views.

Tolbachik volcano, its lava fields and the “Dead forest”

Another volcano, located inside Klyuchevskoy Nature Park is  Tolbachik,  one of the most photogenic volcanoes of Kamchatka. Tolbachik is a volcanic complex, consisting of two volcanoes: Plosky (flat) and Ostry (sharp). Although the most recent major eruption took place in 1976, minor eruptions occurred in 2012 and 2013. Daredevil photographers positioned near the crater were able to capture awe-inspiring images of the spurting lava.

The 1976 Great Eruption devastated the forests at the base of Tolbachik. Today, the area is known as the Dead Forest, an eerie wasteland skeleton-like trees that looks like a scene straight out of Mordor.

The following tours offer a visit to Klyuchevskoy Nature Park: Trekking volcanoes of Kamchatka from North to South,  Kamchatka’s Critters and Craters  and Kamchatka – The Lost World . All of them have just several guaranteed departure per year (July-August), so keep it in mind when planning to join one of them, as they get sold out quite quickly.

Esso village and reindeer herders

Located 520km from Petropavlovsk and nestled in a valley surrounded by mountain ridges and evergreen forests, Esso is one of the best places to get acquainted with the lives of Kamchatka’s local people. Esso’s gorgeous scenery has led to it being described as the ‘ Switzerland of Kamchatka ’. It’s a laidback place, populated by about 2,500 people, with hot thermal pools and a network of hiking trails extending into the neighbouring Bystrinsky Nature Park.

Located relatively close to Klyuchevskoy Nature park, the village is a good “stop” on a tour, to relax in hot thermal pools after a long stay in the wild and trekking active volcanoes.

From here, the groups can reach reindeer herders by helicopter. It takes 1 to 2 hours (based on the reindeer herders current location) of picturesque flight, after which a group may spend 2-3 hours (or even a day) in the camp to see the semi-nomadic way of life of indigenous Kamchatka people. Have a look at the Kamchatka’s Critters and Craters tour  or Kamchatka – The Lost World tour which includes this experience.

Valley of Geysers

Home to the second-largest concentration of geysers the world, this valley’s bizarre scenery appears thoroughly prehistoric, with around 90 steaming geysers that periodically expel huge volumes of hot water in spectacular skyward jets. Only accessible by helicopter, and requiring guides and a network of boardwalks to provide a safe passageway between the frequently erupting vents, this natural gem remains a virtually untouched region of raw geothermal power.

Kamchatka tour Russia valley of geysers

The several flights a week, organized from a helipad located close to Paratunka village, take place from July to September. You will join other travellers, boarding MI-8 helicopter. The tour duration is appx 8 hours on which you will not only enjoy a scenic trek in the valley but also will land in Uzon Caldera for breathtaking shots of steaming vents. Almost all tours in Kamchatka includes this site, however, it usually marked as optional, due to quite a high price (approx US $650pp).

Kurilskoye Lake

Kurilskoye or Kuril Lake  is a crater lake at the southern tip of Kamchatka Peninsula. The lake and its surrounds are renowned among wildlife lovers as being the largest spawning ground for sockeye salmon in Eurasia. As millions of salmon swarm the lake between July and September, hundreds of brown bears take the water to gorge themselves on the fishy feast. The phenomena give visitors the opportunity to observe the bears at a remarkably close range.

Kamchatka bears tour Kuril Lake

There are a couple of options, which allows you to visit the lake and enjoy brown bears watching:

1. Day-tour with a combined group of travellers by MI-8 helicopter

The 5-hours tour has a fixed number of stops (Kuril lake, the caldera of Ksudach volcano, Khodutka hot springs) and includes meals and bathing in hot springs.

2.  Multi-day stay on the lake

For travellers who desire to immerse themselves in the kingdom of brown bears, the option of staying at the Kuril lake’s base camp might be worth considering. This is possible by securing one of the package tours, such as The Kingdom Of Brown Bears , Critters and Craters or Kamchatka – The Lost World , which usually consists of 16 people and also include trekking active volcanoes and other activities.

Mutnovsky and Gorely volcanoes

Located on the Pacific ‘Rim of Fire’, Kamchatka is home to over 300 volcanoes. Mutnovsky is one of the most active. Near its 2,322m summit is a nest of merged craters and brilliant blue glacial lakes. On a hike to the summit, you will see hissing fumaroles surrounded by bright yellow sulphur crystals.

Kamchatka trekking tour Russia bears and volcanoes

At the foot of Mutnovsky volcano is one of Kamchatka’s hidden jewels, the Mutnovsky ice caves . A group of photographers found these caves by chance in late 2012.  The caves can be explored in Summer month, but it highly depends on the weather and snow conditions, as sometimes the “gates” to the caves can be covered by heavy snow, not allowing travellers to enter these fairytale sites.

North of Mutnovsky is Gorely, another extremely active volcano known for its striking turquoise lake of hot sulphuric acid. Both volcanoes can be submitted via moderately strenuous, full-day hikes.

Kamchatka trekking tour Russia bears and volcanoes

Because of they’re geographical relatively, trekking of both volcanoes is usually combined in 2-3 days tour. The scenic route to the volcanoes takes about 4-5 hours by 6WD truck from Petropavlovsk or Paratunka, with an optional stop at Vilyuchinsky Pass and at a majestic waterfall at Opasny Canyon.

Check out the Trekking volcanoes of Kamchatka tour  or Kamchatka – The Lost World tour in order to hike Mutnovsky and Gorely volcanoes.

Avacha Bay, Starichkov Island and Russkaya Bay

In addition to the trekking and  wildlife watching tours , which take you into the wilderness of Kamchatka, there are also several essential Kamchatka seaside trips that any passionate traveller should take.

Stunning Avacha bay (or Avachinskaya) is considered to be among the largest and most beautiful bays in the world, offering the picturesque panorama from the sea, fairly close to the capital of the peninsula.

Kamchatka trekking tour Russia bears and volcanoes

Located close to Avacha Bay, a very small and rocky Starichkov Island, is a splendid natural wonder, which houses massive bird colonies that have determined its designation as a nature reserve.

Kamchatka discovery

South of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is scenic Russkaya Bay, a narrow fjord-like bay with a rugged, rocky coastline backdropped by snowy mountain peaks. Russkaya is one of the most pristine pockets of Pacific wilderness in the area and is home to an incredible variety of marine mammals including whales, orcas, sea lions and otters.

Russkaya Bay is best experienced by a full day cruise from Petropavlovsk seaport. You first pass Avacha Bay and enjoy the bird life at the Starichkov Island, before heading to Russkaya.

Hot springs

Fed by the thermal energy of Kamchatka’s volcanoes, hot springs are dotted across the peninsula, particularly in the south of the peninsula. Many of them enjoy picturesque settings, nestled in forested alpine valleys or surrounded by towering peaks. The warm waters of these natural spas are rich in minerals. Bathing in them is said to have health benefits such as improving circulation and metabolism, nourishing the skin and providing relief from ailments such as arthritis and high blood pressure.

Kamchatka trekking tour Russia bears and volcanoes

Most popular hot springs in Kamchatka are Malki, Verkhne-Paratunskie, Vilyuchinskie, Nalychevo and Khodutka . The last one is the most beautiful and wild one it can be reached only by helicopter on the Kingdom of Brown Bears tour . Others hot springs are included in most Kamchatka tours , after half-day trekking and hikes.

Avachinsky volcano

Towering above Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Avachinsky (2,741m) is one of five volcanoes visible from the city. Amazingly, it is one of the most active volcanoes in the region, although its recent eruptions have been small and posed no threat to the townspeople. With its perfectly conical shape, Avachinsky is considered one of the most beautiful volcanoes in Kamchatka. The climb to the top is relatively straightforward and can be achieved in a day, making it popular with local and visiting hikers in good weather. On a clear day, the view from the summit is a breathtaking panorama over the Petropavlovsk chain of volcanoes.

Kamchatka tour Russia

The hike is very long and challenging (up to 10h), however, no special skills or gear is involved. Usually, groups stay at the base camp at the foot of the volcano for overnight, with a training hike to Camel mountain on the first day and Avachinsky volcano ascending on the second day. However, this hike also can be done just in 1 day, after which you get back to the hotel and rest in the hot thermal pool. Check the Kamchatka Discovery tour  or Trekking volcanoes in Kamchatka from North to South tour , which include the Avachinsky volcano ascending.

Vachkazhets Mount

Located in 80km to the west of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Vachkazhets included in the system of the Uzhno-Bystrinsky range. Vachkazhets and its surroundings are among the most beautiful spots in Kamchatka, telling a story stretching back to ancient times when Vachkazhets was a one-cone volcano before exploding and dividing into three parts. You will be able to take in the scenic surrounds and appreciate the serene quiet at a picnic lunch during the trek.

Khalaktyrsky (Black) beach

A remote Siberian territory sounds like the last place on earth to emerge as a surf destination, but that’s exactly what’s happening at Khalaktyrsky Beach, a vast expanse of black sand with monumental volcanoes in the background.

Kamchatka tour Russia Siberia

The waves here can reach an epic 5.5m. In summer, Khalaktrysky transforms into a surf camp of tents and open fires, as hardcore wave chasers brave the frigid +10C degree water in search of the perfect break. A few brave souls even surf the snow-covered beach in winter, when the ocean temperature is a bone-chilling 2C. Despite this, it’s becoming a new destination for world-renowned surfers.

Winter sports

If you are an experienced skier with a taste for the extreme, then you would have a field day during the winters of Kamchatka. The action starts with an airlift to the volcanic region in a Russian MI-8 helicopter. When you get to the skiing destination, you would touch down in the middle of nowhere and get a free ride down the active volcanoes. If you are up for more adventure, you can ski into the crater of Mutnovksky volcano, with all the terrific vents seething around you.

There are several departures for heli-skiing tours about 7-10 days duration in total, which can be combined with backcountry-skiing or even sailing-backcountry.

Kamchatka heli-ski Russia winter tour

For adventurers who prefer more of a “calmer pace” of travelling, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy snowmobiling and dog sledding around the beautiful natural landmarks of Kamchatka. Check the Winter Adventure in Kamchatka tour , if you are looking for this experience.

Kamchatka Travel Guide – Logisistics

How to get there  .

Kamchatka is a relatively remote place, this is why it has such a rich wildlife and wilderness environment. The only way to get to Kamchatka is by air. The airport of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is about 20 km from the capital in the village of Yelizovo. The airport receives daily direct overnight flights from Moscow and occasional flights from Russian major cities like St Petersburg, Vladivostok and Khabarovsk. During summer months there are occasional international direct flights operate from Tokyo, Japan (July) and Anchorage, Alaska (July – August). Check Aeroflot and S7 airlines to find the best connections.

Best time to visit

Summer is the best time to visit Kamchatka for trekking tours, photography tours and wildlife watching. Choose any time from the beginning of July until mid-September.

During the winter and spring, the bears would be in hibernation making it impossible for you to see them do their thing. However, during this season, you have a chance to see the rich landscape in all its natural beauty by embarking on skiing, heli-skiing or other winter adventure tours around Kamchatka. If you don’t scare of below-zero temperatures choose January – April for your winter adventure in Kamchatka.

Shoulder season months: end of October-December and May-mid-June, are not recommended for travelling.
