Best time to visit ghana.

Ghana is hot and humid all-year round, with the temperature usually around 86 degrees Fahrenheit - the perfect, tropical climate to hit the beach. The most comfortable time for traveling is during the dry season from November to March, when less rain is present. April to October is the wet season with the amount of rainfall varying throughout the country.

Geography and environment

Located in West Africa and bordered by   Burkina Faso ,   Togo , Cote d'Ivoire and the Atlantic Ocean, Ghana has a vast array of different terrain. From savanna and woodlands in the far north to steamy rainforests, palm-studded beaches and lagoons, modern cities and tiny villages, traveling through Ghana reveals a cavalcade of topographic change. Lake Volta and Lake Bosumtwi act as important sources of water for farmers, with many rivers, tributaries and channels carrying the water throughout the country. Furthermore, Lake Volta's Akosombo Dam generates large amounts of hydroelectricity for Ghana and neighboring countries.

Street food favorites of Ghana

This Ghanaian staple can be found all over the country and isn't only a food but also an eating utensil too. Consisting of pounded cassava or yam, mixed with mashed plantain, fufu is rolled up into a ball and used to scoop up soup or stew, then eaten - a tasty multi-tasker!

2. Jollof rice

Thought to have been created in Gambia, this big pot of seasoned rice is one of Ghana's most flavorsome dishes. White rice is cooked in coconut oil and stock with tomato paste, sale, spices and chilli to create a spicy, hearty, dish perfect for backpackers on a budget.

3. Kelewele

This dish of fried plantains spiced with cayenne pepper, chilli powder, nutmeg, cloves and salt is a popular snack food sold by street vendors and market stalls. Choose to eat alone as a snack or served with stews or rice.

This staple dish popular throughout West Africa is made by fermenting ground maize, then cooking in banana leaves or foil. Kenkey can be served alongside hot sauce, gravy and/or fish.

5. Kyinkyinga

With beef representing a luxury to many in Ghana, this West Africa version of the kebab is a true street food delicacy. Featuring seasoned meat (usually beef), onions, peanuts, capsicum, tomatoes, garlic and chilli served with rice, salad or bread, this is a tasty meal full of flavor.

Ghana Tour Reviews

Ghana - tour highlights and travel tips.

Ghana, an attractive destination for beach getaways

Ghana (meaning “Warrior King”) is located in Western Africa, a region which is known for being accommodating towards travelers. Kokrobite offers some of the most excellent beaches the nation has. The Kakum National Park is also a delightful place to experience the lush nature of Ghana. Typically, foreigners and tourists can expect the people of Ghana to be friendly toward those unacquainted with their way of life. A holiday in Ghana means there is a lot to do and see.

Travel Highlights

  • Accra, the Capital of Ghana, is great for Western travelers as English is the city's primary language.
  • Take a safari while enjoying the savannah in Mole National Park.
  • Relax at the some of the most beautiful beaches in Cape Coast. Sipping a cocktail under a palm tree here isn't a bad idea.
  • Visit the Elmina Castle that was originally a center for Portuguese trade. Dating back to 1482, the castle now serves as a major tourism draw in the Elmina economy.

Travel Tips

  • Try some local eats. Ghana offers exciting cuisine, and some of the street food like chicken and Jollof fried rice is delicious.
  • Ghana is one of the safest countries in Africa. However, the country is not exactly welcoming towards LGBTIQ community.
  • Malaria in Ghana is widespread. Therefore, bring a mosquito repellents before travelling to Ghana. You may also want to check in with your doctor with regards to any necessary vaccinations before your trip- Yellow Fever vaccinations, for example, are required.
  • Remember that not all restaurants are operating under common western standards of health. And the ones that do typically cost a pretty penny compared to the “chop shops” often seen on the streets.
  • Be careful what you do with your left hand. Every culture has its customs, and in Ghana doing things such as eating with your left hand is considered impolite and improper.

Ghana has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Ghana before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Ghana, do check out our Ghana Travel Guide for more information.

The 7 Best Ghana Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

Ghana is a West African tropical paradise located on the Gulf of Guinea neighboring Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) to the west, Burkina Faso, to the north, and Togo, to the east. It is a piece of nature’s incredible adornment with breathtaking waterfalls and rolling mountains.

Blessed with amazing biodiversity, hospitable people and beautiful landscapes (including its 540 km of dazzling white beaches that are perfect for relaxation), the best Ghana tours all know there is a lot to discover here and are experts at making sure you get to see the best-of-the-best!

This Natural Wonder is a historical gem and a cultural pearl that contains much of the history of one of humanity’s darkest atrocities – the evil Transatlantic Slave Trade. The Cape Coast Castle is a symbol of the horrific slave trade, where enslaved Africans captured from various parts of the continent took their final look at the only home they have ever known – gone through the ‘Gate of No Return’.

Whether you are thinking of finding your roots in Africa or just curious about how slave masters maltreated slaves in their dungeons in Elmina Castle or you want to learn about the great kings and kingdoms of the Ashanti region that existed well before the era of slavery, then ‘Akwaaba’ (welcome) to Ghana.

There are numerous ways to explore and experience this magical country’s natural beauty while also learning about the injustices committed by those in power in the mid-17th century in enslaving innocent Africans. Some people prefer to travel alone, while others prefer to travel with a partner, but the best way to discover Ghana is by joining a group tour. But why do we say so? You may ask.

Group tours allow you to explore Ghana in groups, where you can share your emotional experiences with like-minded people, make new friends or even get a chance to meet a distant cousin. Who knows?

For the fact that group tours are required to meet the needs of their clients, they have no alternative but to provide a one-of-a-kind experience for them. They know how to make your exploration unique and thrilling, they have the age-old knowledge of taking people around Ghana and believe it; they know this magical country inside and out.

Group tours are like a small community of travelers exploring together; Learning about what life must have been like in Ghana during ancient times and appreciating the efforts done to preserve the centuries-old culture and tradition for our generation to experience.

The truth is that group tours take off the headache of planning your travel itinerary completely from you, and finding the best places to stay and the best restaurants to dine at. Isn’t this a great start to an amazing exploration?

So, much as we have done for the best Rwanda tours and best Dominican Republic tours , here we are going to be talking about one of the best Ghana tours (and their operators), so you can be inspired – and then choose with confidence. These tour packages are offered by the best tour operators operating in Ghana and were carefully selected to give you a list of varieties to choose from the best.

Ghanaian Adventure Safari

Black history tour, slave route tour, panafest celebration in ghana, educational tour of ghana, 9 days local tour in kumasi and tamale, cultural ghana trip, across africa tours & travel.

Across Africa Tours and Travel is a leading tour operator in Ghana with a great knowledge of the country’s most visited sites. Experienced in crafting tailor-made explorations combining emotional trips to slave castles and amazing getaways to stunning waterfalls. But not just that, they also give their clients a thrilling safari experience, allowing them to discover the different facets of a Ghanaian Adventure.

On this tour, you will start your journey in Accra, Ghana’s capital where you will visit the enclosed flame of Africa lit by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1961, symbolizing the path to  Africa’s freedom from colonial rule.

At this place, you will also visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, where Ghana’s first president was laid to rest. The location is set in beautiful gardens and is connected by a museum that houses photos, artifacts, and information about the life of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah who was the pioneer of Ghana’s independence from British rule.

From Accra, you will continue to Kumasi – the capital city of the Ashanti Region and get a thrilling visit to the Manhyia Palace where the Ashanti Kings had their official residence until 1974 and other tourist attraction sites in Obuasi, Abandze, Assin Manso etc.

The fun part of this trip is the visit to the Kakum National Park where you will take a short stroll through the forest floor. Have an unforgettable view of the birds and butterflies and possibly capture a variety of rare mammal species such as the Diana Monkey, Bongo, Yellow-Backed Duiker and the elusive forest elephant.

You will continue to the canopy walkway, which is 1000 feet long with seven bridge viewing platforms that reach 150 feet above the ground. This is a perfect chance to be completely immersed in mother nature and relieve the stress gathered from learning about the injustices done to African ancestors.

This fully-guided tour takes a group of 20 people aged between 8 to 99 years old. It is perfect for families and has a starting price of $3467 per person including your accommodation, meals and transportation for 8 days.

Landtours Ghana Ltd.

Landtours Ghana Limited is West Africa’s premier adventure travel company, focusing on delivering a seamless, transformative, and unforgettable travel experience to its clients. You do realize that you’re covered when you travel with the big players in the travel industry, don’t you?

Landtours Ghana Limited is more than just a travel company; it has positioned itself as a community development agent, which is why, when you visit a local village, your entry fees are collected and donated to the village for school, medical, or environmental projects. This has a significant impact on the villagers’ quality of life.

Wouldn’t you be proud of yourself if you knew that your visit to Ganvie, a village built on water that has existed for over 300 years, would not only be an unforgettable experience for you, but also an opportunity for the innocent villagers to benefit from your visit? I’m sure you’ll be pleased with yourself. What’s more, guess what! We will be pleased for you as well.

This time, Landtours will take you through an emotional roller coaster – a visit to history’s darkest moments by dipping a foot in the same waters where Africa’s forefathers took their last baths, and touring the bleak slave dungeons of the Elmina castle built by the Portuguese in 1482 and the Cape Coast castle, where they spent their last days before embarking on the journey to a foreign land.

A journey in chains with no clothes on and thousands fitted on boats made for a hundred – layered like sardines in tins.

This part of the tour is filled with mixed emotions; anger and hope. You will be angry at the perpetrators for even having the thought to put their fellowmen in such conditions of horror. You will be hopeful because of the steps taken by our generation to stand firm and say ‘Never Again’ shall such atrocities happen to mankind.

The future is bright and it is heartwarming to see that centuries later the descendants of those who went through the gate of no return came back through the same gate now named, the gate of return.

After an emotional ride, you will then visit the three famous Ashanti craft villages to let loose your anger and enjoy the beautiful scenery of pure art.

The tour is fully-guided and perfect for families. It takes a group of 20 people between the ages of 3 to 75 years old and costs $2613 per person including accommodation, meals and transportation.

Eyali Tours

Eyal Tours is a Ghanaian tour operator that provides a comprehensive range of products and services to local and international business travelers as well as tourists in Ghana, Togo, and Benin. They are a dedicated team of experts who will make your visit to Ghana memorable and leave you wanting more of this magical place.

As you read the name of this tour, we are quite very sure that you are already imagining what it is all about. The slave route tour takes you to Ghana’s coast, where you will see some of the unique places that were important during the transatlantic slave trade, which lasted for more than 300 years. Take a second and read that number again. More than three centuries of darkness and complete horror on the African continent.

On this educational tour, you will be taken through the exact route the enslaved Africans went through, from being captured in the hinterland to taking their last bath in the ‘Donko Nsuo’ to being sold to the slave traders and held captive in underground dungeons before their inhuman shipment to the New World.

It is difficult to not shed tears of anger while on this tour, as the longstanding fortresses on the coast of the Atlantic are the realities of a dark history that have been told too frivolously to the younger generations of the West.

Writing about this tour makes us emotional and leaves us in disbelief and still questioning, Why? Sadness fills our hearts as we think about how different history could have been. If you are feeling the same trigger as you read this article, then you are not alone.

Even though this tour is super emotional, there are fun moments too. You will visit the Kakum National Park and walk your emotional tensions down the canopy walkway while enjoying a breathtaking view of the rainforest.

The tour takes a maximum of 100 people between the ages of 1 to 100 years old and costs $1600 per person including accommodation, meals and transportation for 6 days.

Continent Tours Limited

Continent Tours is a highly-rated eco-travel tour company known for its professional handling of its clients. With its tolerant and humorous tour guides whose depth of knowledge about the Ghanaian people and their culture will leave you amazed. They take pride in crafting tailor-made experiences for groups of people who are willing to take on an educational journey through Ghana’s history.

On this tour, you will first stop at the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre, which commemorates the life of the prominent Pan-Africanists who chose to live and work in Ghana. You will then continue to Jamestown Community, one of Accra’s most historic neighborhoods, with history on every street corner.

This settlement is best known for its lighthouses – the first of which was built by the British in 1875 as a navigational aid for trading ships sailing through the Gulf of Guinea.

In the evening, you will take a guided tour of Elmina’s ancient town. At the harbor, you’ll see colorful fishing canoes preparing to set sail for another night of fishing. You will witness the lively movement of fishermen and female vendors buying and selling fish on this same shore that once traded humans as goods.

As the name of the tour tells it clearer, the main activity of this tour package is to witness the PANAFEST Celebration which takes place biannually. The PANAFEST (the Pan African Historical Theater Festival) was created to help Africans reconnect with their strengths and be inspired to remain vigilant, firmly establishing themselves to take control of their future by learning from history.

You will join others in kicking off the Emancipation Day Celebration with a Grand Durbar of traditional chiefs and Central Region residents. This will be a grand, colorful, and spectacular event that will highlight the pomp and pageantry of Ghana’s traditional rulers, who will be dressed in fine ceremonial traditional clothing and adorned with glittering gold jewelry and traditional beads.

The tour takes a group of 20 people between the ages of 5 to 80 years old. It includes your accommodation, meals and transportation for a starting price of $2895 per person for 10 days.

Ranked among the top tour providers in Ghana, Olives Travel And Tours aims at connecting people from different walks of life through group tours that offer unique explorations and in-depth education. Based in Ghana, you are sure to get an authentic experience traveling with an indigenous travel company.

This tour will begin in Accra at the Makola Market which is the capital’s largest open market, where women and men sell goods and services in the open. Food, vegetables, spices, tubers, plastics, fish, and many other treasures can be found.

A stroll down to the market will teach you something unique about the everyday lives of ordinary Ghanaians, and the experience will be unforgettable. Another authentic experience that you will encounter is a visit to Agbogloshie and the Konkomba yam markets. You’ll be astounded by the number of energetic young men pushing trucks and shouting in the sun for a way to transport their goods.

Part of this tour will be a visit to the Cape Coast Castle to honor the lives lost during the dreadful transatlantic slave trade. By now,  you should understand that a typical Ghanaian adventure is a combination of history, safari, culture and tradition.

Each of these facets of the country is inexhaustible on a single tour even though tour operators do try their utmost best to give you as much information as they possibly can.

As this tour is tailored to teaching you about Ghana and its history and culture, you should expect to learn new things every step of the way; from Accra to Cape Coast and Elmina Castle.

The fun part of this tour is the visit to West Mall which is West Africa’s largest mall. The interaction with Ghanaians will give you a glimpse of how much hospitality this country sheds on strangers. Do not be surprised to hear ‘Akwaaba’ all over the place as it is how people will greet you. It means welcome in the Akan language.

The tour takes a group of 20 between the ages of 5 to 85 years old. It is family-friendly and well-guided. It includes your accommodation, meals and transportation costing $2540 per person for 10 days.

Pro Tour Africa.

Pro Tour Africa is a registered and licensed tour company in Ghana that strives to make traveling and touring in Ghana more responsible, sustainable and rewarding for all visitors.

They vow to accomplish this by offering the ultimate destination for the discerning traveler and tourist, as well as experiential, tailored travel planning, vacations, and unique tour itineraries for groups. Pro Tour Africa operates to provide tourists with culturally inspired experiences by offering fascinating travel packages and the best prices for tours in Ghana.

This tour is designed for visitors who want to learn about and experience traditional African culture, Ghanaian lifestyle, history, and adventure. The tour focuses primarily on two popular regions in Ghana: the Ashanti Region, Kumasi, and the Northern Region, Tamale.

You will start at the Bonwire Kente weaving village in Juaben, Kumasi. The popular Ghanaian local cloth “kente” originated here. It is also one of Ghana’s most important kente weaving centers. Kente is a local cloth with various patterns, colors, and designs that are worn on special occasions such as festivals, weddings, naming ceremonies, and the enstoolment of kings, queens, and chiefs.

Following Bonwire Village will be Ntonso, where artisans hand-stamp patterns on a cotton cloth to create Adinkra textiles. Adinkra cloth in black-on-black and blank-on-red is worn at funerals and solemn occasions. You will have the chance to learn how to make black dye from tree bark. Isn’t that amazing? You will also have the opportunity to create your own personalized Adinkra sash to take home.

This tour will include a village tour with locals in a typical Tamale village to experience mud and hut houses, stream visits, cooking in local clay pots, and other activities. There will also be a tour of the chief palace and a commercial bus boarding experience.

This is what we call authentic experiences – living like a local. This amazing tour package goes far and beyond what we can put in ink on this article. The only way to find out the secrets is by taking the chance to explore a typical day in the life of a Ghanaian villager.

The tour has a maximum group size of 100 people aged 3 to 85. It is fully guided, family-friendly, and includes meals, lodging, and transportation for nine days for $2300 per person.

Culture Holidays Private Limited

Culture Holidays Private Limited is an international luxury group travel company that has been serving travelers since 1999. They enjoy going above and beyond to add some local flavor to your usual trip.

Because, after all, what is the essence of a place if not its own unique traditions and folklore? They asked. This is why you will be taken to Accra, Kumasi and Elmina neighborhoods in search of that unique and authentic experience.

In this quest, you will be taken to witness the Akwasidae Festival – a magnificent Ashanti celebration centered on ancestral reverence, remembrance, and recognition of past kings and noble feats. It is a celebration of the Golden Stool, which is believed to have descended from the sky as well as a cultural vibrancy that brings together the Asantehene sub-kings and subjects of Kumasi at the Manhyia Palace.

Following this cultural experience, you will be taken to the Cape Coast where you will join Ghanaian women and learn how to prepare some rich traditional Ghanaian foods. This is the most exciting part of this trip because Ghana, here us out, Ghana has the best food in the world!

We know you can counter that but we are not taking our word back until you taste Ghana’s Jollof Rice. We cannot pen down the magical taste of Ghana’s Jollof which is why we will let you be the judge.

This trip takes a group of 20 between the ages of 3 to 85 years old and is perfect for families. It includes your accommodation, meals and transportation for 6 days and costs $4413 per person.

7 of the best places to visit in Ghana

With wonderful beaches, traditional culture and amazing food, experience the best of Ghana with these top places to visit © Gerhard Pettersson / Shutterstock

With stunning beaches, rich culture and vibrant cities, plus a stable democracy and tourism-friendly infrastructure, the West African country of Ghana is one of the most interesting and accessible destinations on the continent – it's even been called "Africa for beginners."

Situated between Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso, this hot spot has a colorful traditional heritage to explore – largely through spicy food, bright African art and historical colonial sights. Accra is the capital and the country's cosmopolitan hub, but there are sights to see outside the city limits as well, all easy to reach with great attractions.

Experience the best of Ghana with these top places to visit.

1. Accra is best place to go for Ghanaian art, food and nightlife

Ghana’s capital is an open door to the country’s culture –  a gateway to Ghanaian, art, food and nightlife . Choose from elegant nightspots such as the rooftop Skybar25 or the stylish Bistro 22 , tailored to tourists, expats and diasporas that can afford the high prices, and eateries offering a more down-to-earth taste of Ghanian cuisine , such as  Auntie Muni Waakye and Bush Canteen, which serve local favorites like jollof rice, made with tomato sauce and spices, and waakye , a black-eyed-pea dish.

In the galleries, you’ll find images of Ghanaian social life from up-and-comers such as Kwesi Botchway and Afia Prempeh, and internationally recognized artists including Serge Clottey and Betty Acquah. Pieces from Ghanaian and African artists as a whole are captured inside showrooms across the city – contemporary art at Gallery 1957, older African works at Berj Gallery and rotating visual-art installations at the Nubuke Foundation, to name just a few.

2. Tamale has arts and crafts and Islamic architecture

Tamale is the northern capital of Ghana, and it has a great blend of architecture both old and new, from modern high-rises to buildings dating as far back as 150 years.

One highlight is the Tamale Central Mosque – it has the capacity for thousands of Muslim worshipers, hundreds of whom visit in droves for daily prayers. The mosque is located right in the center of the city, standing out with its green-topped minaret; a step inside reveals a range of multicolored patterned mats gracefully lining the floor, ready for prayer.

Tamale is also known for its arts and crafts. To pick up unique souvenirs or simply browse the wares, visit the National Cultural Centre , where you’ll find items like jewelry, drums and handmade baskets intricately woven from grass, straw and bamboo.

Detour:  Another example of impressive architecture is the Larabanga mosque, located about 116km (72 miles) west of Tamale. Dating back to 1421, it’s recognized as one of West Africa’s oldest mosques, built in a Sudano-Sahelian style using mud and reeds, with tall white walls and towers that curve inward. It's a good photo op – most tourists capture the mosque’s iconic architecture from the outside.

3. Kumasi is the best place to visit for Ashanti tradition and culture

Kumasi is the second-largest city in Ghana, and its people – known as Ashanti – have a cultural history and language that have remained dominant in the region for centuries. To learn more about this rich heritage, stop by Manhyia Palace .

Now a museum dedicated to the Ashanti monarchy and traditions, it was built in 1925 by the British colonial government for King Asantehene Agyeman Prempeh I after he returned from nearly three decades of exile in the Seychelles (though he refused to move in until the Ashanti had paid for the building themselves).

The palace would remain home to the monarchy for several generations, until Otumfuo Opoku Ware II relocated to a new residence in 1974. Two decades later, it was converted into a museum with exhibits displaying items from the royal family, such as wardresses, the customary regalia used during royal activities, and talking drums, which function as a communication device to celebrate and mourn during gatherings. Every pulse of the drum has a unique way of speaking to the Ashanti people.

Planning tip: Kumasi is home to numerous celebrations – time your visit just right to be part of one of them. The Akwasidae Festival occurs every sixth Sunday to honor past kings, invoking their blessings by calling upon their names.

Shadowy figures in the distant mist in a botanical garden dominated by huge trees

4. Aburi is best for families and green spaces

Located less than an hour’s drive from Accra, Aburi has fresh air in abundance, making it a perfect spot to escape the buzz of the capital and spend some time with nature. For a relaxing day trip, Aburi Botanic Gardens is particularly popular with families, who come to stroll alongside the towering palm trees and snap a picture to commemorate the occasion – posing by the palms is a signature move.

Featuring trees that arrived in the late 19th century from far-flung locales in Central America, Mexico, Malaysia, India and the Caribbean, as well as orchids, rock gardens and a children's park, the gardens also include 13 hectares (32 acres) of uncultivated land, kept in a wild state to maintain ecological balance. While you’re wandering the grounds, keep an eye out for an array of contributions planted by visiting dignitaries, such as the mahogany tree from Queen Elizabeth II in 1961 and the silver oak from Prince Charles in 1977.

5. Learn about colonial history at Cape Coast

Situated on the Atlantic Coast, Cape Coast was once a hub for the transatlantic slave trade, and Cape Coast Castle played a key role, housing enslaved people from the 16th to the 17th centuries.

First built by the Dutch and later captured by the British, the fort's whitewashed walls bely the dark history inside – as US President Barack Obama remarked when he visited in 2009, it’s a site that “reminds us of the capacity of human beings to commit great evil.”

Today it's on the Unesco World Heritage List, and guided tours take visitors into the dungeons and along the ramparts to explore this period of Ghana’s colonial history. The West African Historical Museum is located inside the castle and contains a significant collection of ceremonial drums and ancient pottery.

A local hiking on a lush trail on Mt Afadjato, Volta Region, Ghana

6. Head to the Volta Region for outdoor adventure

The Volta Region is home to Mt Afadjato, one of the tallest mountains in Ghana. A climb to the top takes about two-and-a-half hours and rewards hikers with incredible views of both Ghana and neighboring Togo to the east. Along with local flora, you can expect to see hippos, tortoises, lizards and butterflies.

The region is also home to a  monkey sanctuary  and myriad waterfalls, including West Africa’s highest, Wli Waterfalls, whose clean, gushing waters mark the border between Ghana and Togo. A 30-minute walk leads to the lower falls, and then it’s a longer climb to the upper falls; there are pools at the bases of both sets where you can take a cold dip, spotting monkeys in the surrounding trees and bats in the nearby cliffs.

Planning tip:  Stop at the Wli Tourist Office for a guide; you’re not allowed up to the falls without one.

7. Ada Foah is best for water sports

On the coast of southern Ghana, Ada Foah sits where the Volta River empties into the Atlantic Ocean – a remote stretch of real estate with long beaches and plentiful opportunities for water sports. Rent a speedboat to hop from beach to beach , or take your time and kayak along the palm-lined waterways for a slower-paced experience.

Places like Aqua Safari Resort capture the essence of Ada, with waterfalls, ponds and aquariums onsite and peacocks running free on the grounds. Check out Baffour Falls, where there are pelicans and a tortoise to be fed.

Additional details, what you should know before going on a ghana tour, how to get a ghana tourism visa.

One critical step before traveling to Ghana on a group tour of any kind is getting a tourist visa. In order to get a visa, you have to be vaccinated for yellow fever, submit some paperwork in order to verify your identity and your itinerary within the country, and then pay a one time fee of around $160. To check the most up-to-date requirements for a tourist visa (for an American), be sure to visit the U.S. Embassy of Ghana’s website .

The Best Ghana Tours

Ghana is a naturally beautiful country along the “Gold Coast” of Africa. Tours in Ghana will feature many nature walks and beach visits on the itinerary.

Aside from nature and wildlife, Ghana is also rich in history. It was a popular trading and colonial outpost for the British, Portuguese, and Dutch. They traded natural resources such as gold, but the slave trade proved the most lucrative.

Ghana was a very active area for slave traders in the 17th century. Which makes it all the more impressive that Ghana was the first African nation south of the Sahara to achieve freedom from colonial rule.

During the time of colonialism, different architectural and cultural influences lent themselves to Ghana’s infrastructure. Many old colonial buildings have been converted into museums. Ghana tours will visit these and other memorials dedicated to the long battle under colonialism.

To learn about this history and its present day impacts in depth, consider going on a cultural or education and learning tour.

Ghana on a Tour of West Africa

Many tours include Ghana on an extended trip of West Africa. Other countries typically visited include Côte D’Ivoire, Guinea, Senegal, and Benin. Taking a small group tour of multiple West African countries gives you a much better feel for the region, and as a result, is highly recommended.

Read Your Way Through Accra

Bus stations. Traffic stops. Beaches. There’s no telling where you’ll find the next story in Accra, Ghana’s capital. Peace Adzo Medie shares some of her favorites.

  • Share full article

In this illustration, a person in a red tank top and pink shorts lounges on a green blanket on a busy tree-lined beach, reading a book.

By Peace Adzo Medie

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books.

Accra is rich with stories, some of them only a few words long — Still Hustling; Work Hard and Dream Big; Short Ways Are Dangerous — and written in bold letters on the rear windows of tro tros, the ubiquitous minibuses that ferry residents and visitors around the city. These mantras are meant to represent the people who own the buses. But they also tell of life in Accra, and what it takes to make it in this vibrant city.

Accra, Ghana’s capital, is in the southern part of the country and borders the Atlantic Ocean. For centuries, its coastline has served as an entry point for people both from neighboring countries and from farther away. Ghanaian writers have found rich material in the city, the home of the Ga people. And writers from other African countries and the diaspora, such as Wole Soyinka and Maya Angelou, have called Accra home, even if only for a short time.

Though much of Accra’s creative activity has taken place in centers like the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, interest in stories and books permeates the city.

Merchants selling books line many thoroughfares. There is a good chance that, when you stop at a major traffic light, a bookseller, wares in hand, will come to your window and try to get you to buy at least one. Even bus stations can be a treasure trove. One of my favorite activities as a teenager was shopping for books at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, a busy bus station in the heart of the city, where volumes are neatly arranged in stalls or on canvas spread out on the ground. And when I didn’t have enough money for a book, Accra still came through for me: I could always read and imagine the stories behind the one-liners on the buses idling nearby.

What should I read before I pack my bags?

Nii Ayikwei Parkes’s “ Tail of the Blue Bird ” brings the city to life. This slim novel is set in Accra and Sonokrom, a small village. Kayo, a forensic pathologist working in Accra, has been forced by a high-ranking police officer to investigate a sinister discovery in the village.

The novel’s lyrical prose and rich dialogue, which incorporates Ghanaian words and phrases, make it delightful to read. Through Kayo’s work, outings with friends and encounters with the police, we see different aspects of life in Accra, while his time in Sonokrom and interactions with the village’s intriguing inhabitants offer a glimpse of how people outside the center relate to the city.

If you prefer nonfiction, Ato Quayson’s “ Oxford Street, Accra: City Life and the Itineraries of Transnationalism ” offers an excellent introduction to the city. It takes the reader on a journey through Accra’s history, showing its evolution from a fishing village to a port town during British colonial rule, to a vibrant metropolis that draws in people from around the country and the world. With Oxford Street, a bustling commercial corridor, as a starting point, Quayson evokes the sights and sounds of the city with keen attention to how people interact with each other and their surroundings. Forays into the salsa and gym scenes underline the transnational dimensions of life in Accra.

What books or authors should I bring along with me?

Accra is at the heart of Yepoka Yeebo’s “ Anansi’s Gold: The Man Who Looted the West, Outfoxed Washington, and Swindled the World .” This work of nonfiction is a wild ride about one of the boldest scams of the 1970s and ‘80s, carried out by John Ackah Blay-Miezah, a charismatic Ghanaian. Blay-Miezah promised huge returns to thousands of investors from around the world, tied to a bogus trust fund allegedly set up by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president. While Blay-Miezah targeted victims across the world, his dealings with government officials and other businesspeople in Accra facilitated his scam and, ultimately, contributed to its end. The book is a meticulously researched and riveting account of politics and money in post-independence Ghana.

Fictional stories of murder can also be doorways into Accra. In “ Sleep Well My Lady ,” by Kwei Quartey, a female detective’s investigation of a murder offers a glimpse into the lives of the rich and the not-so-rich of the city. In Kobby Ben Ben’s “ No One Dies Yet ,” Accra is the scene of mystery and sex, in a meeting of Ghana and its diaspora.

What books can show me other facets of the city?

There is always something to discover in Accra, even for people who are already familiar with the city. It helps to know the right people, though — or at least the right books.

“ Accra Noir ,” edited by Nana-Ama Danquah, is a collection of 13 stories set throughout pockets of the city. Their characters encounter the kind of sky-high hurdles that a thriving, cutthroat metropolis puts in the way of its residents — unemployment, corruption, abuse of power. And, determined to make it, these characters do not hesitate to adopt creative and extreme methods, often in places that are hidden from view: hotel rooms and bedrooms, dark alleys and a market at night.

Serena Owusua Dankwa’s “ Knowing Women: Same Sex-Intimacy, Gender, and Identity in Postcolonial Ghana ” is also about finding joy when the conditions are unyielding. It is a study of same-sex desire among women and of their relationships, which happen in every part of Ghana, yet aren’t typically visible in the open. The historical discussion of same-sex desire and intimacy in Ghana, and Africa more broadly, is illuminating, and dislodges widely held reductive ideas about the subject. Dankwa’s interviews with women, including female athletes, both in Accra and in a midsize town, reveal a great deal about desire and intimacy and the influences of class and social norms.

If I have no time for day trips, what books should I read instead?

Books of poetry are one way to travel around Ghana. Kofi Anyidoho’s collection “The Place We Call Home” is rhythmic in its treatment of history and the present. Anyidoho is also the editor of a book of poetry by another Ghanaian great, Kofi Awoonor. “The Promise of Hope: New and Selected Poems, 1964-2013” beautifully renders life in Ghana and abroad.

“The Girl Who Can,” by Ama Ata Aidoo, a writer with a towering legacy , is a collection of stories that explores girlhood and womanhood. Aidoo’s novel “Changes: A Love Story” chronicles one woman’s attempts to live and love on her own terms.

For books that take you on journeys into the past, start with Ayi Kwei Armah’s “The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born.” This classic of Ghanaian literature unfolds during the 1960s and follows an unnamed railway clerk determined to stay on the straight and narrow path — unlike others around him. “ The Hundred Wells of Salaga, ” by Ayesha Harruna Attah, is set in the 19th century. In this novel, the trade in enslaved people plays a major role in changing the lives of two young women. Yaa Gyasi’s “ Homegoing ” goes further back, to the 18th century, to narrate the outcomes of one family’s encounters with the West.

What’s a good place to curl up with a book on a day off?

Accra is a city of beaches and, in addition to sunshine and a cool breeze, a few of its waterfronts have the ambience that make for a good reading experience. But I’m partial to green spaces, many of which are beyond the city limits. Aburi, in the Eastern Region, is a short drive outside Accra. Situated on a hill, the town is cool and has several spots where you can curl up with a book while enjoying the lush scenery.

Ghanaian creative Emmanuel Whajah shares experience from going on tour with Jason Derulo

Ghanaian-German photographer and videographer Emmanuel Whajah has said he feels proud to have worked with Jason Derulo on his Nu King Tour.

Ghana creative Emmanuel Whajah shares experience from going on tour with Jason Derulo

The American singer embarked on a world tour between February and March that saw him perform in various European countries to promote his latest album ‘Nu King’.

Recommended articles

Whajah was one of the creatives tasked with documenting the tour, which had his longtime clients Les Twins on the bill.

“On Jason Derulo’s Nu King Tour, my job was to film Les Twins and document everything on this tour in collaboration with Jason Derulo,” Whajah told pulse.com.gh.

“I have been working with Larry and Laurent Bourgeois, known as Les Twins, for 10 years and always accompany them on any tour where they need me. This time, they wanted content and a documentary from the production to behind-the-scenes footage of the tour.”

Whajah is also the founder of the creative agency ‘Play The Game’, which has some top footballers and entertainers on its roster.

Since he led the formation of ‘Play The Game’, several sports stars have signed on to the agency, including Ghana international Daniel Kofi-Kyereh.

Whajah has also worked with several brands and personalities, in his role as a videographer and director.

He explained that working with Les Twins and Jason Derulo involved a lot of travelling but said he enjoyed every moment of it, especially meeting other talented crew members.

“We travelled from city to city on five to six tour buses always four to eight-hour trips and lived from arena to arena,” he said.

“As the creative director and the one who takes care of the social media for the two brothers, it wasn't easy to manage everything because a lot of things happen at the same time, so you have very little to no sleep while you're on tour.

“But it was unique to meet the whole crew and team, different talents and people who have worked with legends like Usher, Beyonce, New Edition and Chris Brown.”

Meanwhile, Jason Derulo’s ‘Nu King’ album was released in February.

OUTSTANDING!! SUPERB!! OUTSTANDING!!! From the start -- The tour guide Swayba shared Exactly where she would meet my wife and I at the airport -- and that is very important with hundreds of people and taxi drivers walking in close proximity of the exit doors of the airport! Even before we had arrived, we had asked 2 weeks in advance to deviate from the tour scheduling and visit a town named Nima (a suburb of Accra) to visit a children's school to provide some very minor school supplies. They easily could have said -- You will need to make arrangements to have school staff pick you up or schedule a taxi. They gladly incorporated our 3 hour visitation request into the itinerary WITHOUT any additional charges! We had a fascinating tour of the Ghana National museum which included bronzed sculptures of several of Ghana's earliest presidents and the rich history surrounding their lives. They even shared Historically how in some cases the power of the queen would result in her family inheriting control of the estate -- not the king's lineage. The tour of the Aburi Gardens included seeing and learning that frankincense comes from the root of a tree, as well as hearing about the numerous other plants and trees. We stayed overnight at a small resort overlooking Lake Volta - beautiful - which we took a little boat ride on the next day! We toured Kakum National Park - a mostly undisturbed rainforest which has a Canopy Walkway - a suspended bridge 30 meters above the ground which we got to walk on - NOT for those with a fear of heights - It was AWESOME! We also went to Black Star Square - Elmina castle, Cape coast castle, Cedi bead factory and more!! I also wish to thank our driver - Enis, Enis navigated the roads when they were challenging as well as getting us to ALL of the locations expeditiously and safely. He is an excellent driver!!! I would also include that Rashida, the tour supervisor helped immensely in the initial tour coordination and the initial pick-up from the airport. All in all as I said at the beginning OUTSTANDING!! SUPERB!! OUTSTANDING!!! Bryan Johnson

Good overview to some of the highlights of Ghana. Emmanuel was a conscientious, intelligent guide who patiently answered all my questions and made the tour very enjoyable. Only complaint was some of the hotels were substandard- no hot water, ineffective AC, remote locations, dark rooms and noisy. Hotels at the resort and golden hill Parker were much better than others.

Ayra Starr to join Chris Brown on US tour, says she is prepared for criticism

Ayra Starr is currently one of Afrobeats' biggest stars

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr has said she is "prepared" for any criticism over her decision to open for US musician Chris Brown on his upcoming US tour. Chris Brown's violent assault on his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 became one of the biggest news stories of that year. Brown received five years' probation and a community service order for the assault. When asked if she is aware that she may be criticized for touring with Brown because of said assault, Starr told the BBC's Focus on Africa podcast: "I'm prepared, I'm ready... I won't respond, I'll let people do their thing and I'm just going to work." "Rihanna is my queen but I try to, like, separate my work". Starr, who has rapidly become one of Africa's most popular musicians, said Rihanna is her "number one" and she would like to collaborate with the Barbados-born icon "by God's grace". Starr recently finished recording her second album, The Year I Turned 21.
