Traveler (Genshin Impact)

Stop hand

Aether / Lumine , also known as the Traveler and the Outlander , is the main protagonist and player character of the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact , as well as a cameo character in its accompanying webcomic series of the same name.

Both them and their sibling were traveling out of Teyvat, but they were blocked by an Unknown God and were both defeated and sealed away. They were separated from each other and had their powers sealed away. While the Traveler's sibling eventually returned to Teyvat, the Traveler was sealed until an unknown amount of years later. Afterwards, the Traveler wandered around Teyvat until they came across Paimon , who helps guide the Traveler around Teyvat in search for their missing sibling.

Aether is voiced by Shun Horie in Japanese, who also voiced, Asta in Black Clover : Jump festa 2016 special. In English, he is voiced by Zach Aguilar, who also voiced Genos in One Punch Man , Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer , Koichi Hirose in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable , Slaine Troyard in Aldnoah.Zero , Sieg in Fate/Apocrypha , Otto Suwen in Re:Zero series, Arthur Pendragon in Seven Deadly Sins , and Byleth male voice in Fire Emblem: Three Houses , and Espresso Cookie in Cookie Run Kingdom. He is also voiced by Lee Kyung-Tae in Korean and Luyin in Chinese.

Lumine is voiced by Aoi Yūki , who also voiced Yuuki Konno in Sword Art Online II , Diane in Seven Deadly Sins , Madoka Kaname in Puella Magi Madoka Magica , Tamaki Kotatsu in Fire Force , Tanya von Degurechaff in Tanya the Evil , and Fremy Speeddraw from Rokka no Yuusha. In English, she is voiced by Sarah Miller-Crews, who also voiced Noelle and Qiqi from the same game, Angela in Trials of Mana , and Roxanne in Pokémon franchise. She is also voiced by Lee Sae-a in Korean and Yanning in Chinese.

Appearance [ ]

The Traveler is at least an unknown amount of years alive and they both appear as young adults. Both Aether and Lumine have blond hair, have golden eyes, fair light skin, and are both twins. They both have different outfit colors from each others:

As the older twin, Aether has long braided hair and wears a black, white, gold outfit. He wears a gold earring, white scarf, gold and white cape, a gold and brown midriff shirt with a short sleeve, black gloves, black pants, a belt with a star and black boots.

As the younger twin, Lumine has short hair and wears a blue and white dress and she wears two white flowers (known as Inteyvat , the national flower of Khaenri'ah) on her head, a white scarf, a white and blue cape, a light blue skirt with shoulder length, white stockings, and white boots.

Relation to the Seven Vision Elements [ ]

Whenever Aether or Lumine are resonated with any of the Vision Elements, some highlights on their outfit change colors to match the color of the Element that they are currently using:

  • When the first had their original powers, their highlights glowed white, but after losing them, they stopped glowing, leaving it dull.
  • When they are aligned with Anemo, their highlights glow turquoise.
  • When they are aligned with Geo, their highlights glow yellow.
  • When aligned with Electro, their highlights glow purple.
  • When aligned with Dendro, their highlights glow green.
  • When aligned with Hydro, their highlights glow blue.

Personality [ ]

The Unknown God sended them and their twin to Teyvat where they were both imprisoned and one of them had their powers sealed. Due to this, the Traveler is keen on finding their missing sibling. However, they did not remember too much about the past after being sealed away for an unknown amount of years. After finding their twin, now affilated with the Abyss Order, in the "We Will be Reunited" Archon Quest, their main goal changes to wanting to get help from the Seven Archons of Teyvat. Occasionally, the Traveler calls Paimon "emergency food" much to her frustration.

The Traveler has befriended and became great allies to many people in Teyvat, including the Archons of each nation. While the Traveler was uninterested in Teyvat's problems, they are also shown to be a compassionate, selfless person. They are highly wary of the Abyss Order and the Fatui, being a major enemy of both organizations.

Powers and Abilities [ ]

Hailing from another world, the Traveler is capable of performing feats unheard of within Teyvat. Aside from using their sword as their primary method of combat, they are able to resonate with multiple elements even without possessing a Vision of their own.

  • Aerokinesis : With the power from Lord Barbatos, the Traveler can create a suctioning currents of air from their palm, or summon a tall tornado that carries away small-to-medium enemies caught in its path. With Anemo, they are also able to create a cutting gust of wind with the final hit of their sword.
  • Geokinesis : Acquiring the power from Rex Lapis, they can disgorge meteorites, and create a radial shockwave that pushes foes away and erupts many rocks after a set distance. Furthermore, they can deal Geo damage with the final hit of their sword slash combo.
  • Electrokinesis : Obtaining Beelzebul's power, they can release three blades of lightning at once, or coordinate lightning strikes with every attack.
  • Dendrokinesis: Obtaining Buer's power, they can release leaves widely and can summon a Dendro bulb.
  • Hydrokinesis: Obtaining Focalors's power, they can shoot waters in wild splashes, and can summon large spiral water through it.
  • Underwater Breathing : after obtaining their Hydro powers, Traveler can breathe under Fontainian inland waters (and only these waters), granting Paimon, other Gods and Vision holders with this ability.
  • Elemental Sight : Even without a Vision, the Traveler is capable of detecting elemental traces left by monsters, or other sources.
  • To highlight how skillful Traveler is combat. When Alhaitham gave the Traveler the Divine Knowledge Capsule, their performance only increased by 0.073 percent, showing how much twins accumulate their fighting experiences since before they even come to Teyvat to the point there is almost nothing to gain from can knowledge. After you use the Divine Knowledge Capsule, the Traveler's attack permanently increases by 3. (3 ÷ 0.073% = 4109.6)
  • Enhanced Durability : The Traveler is able to withstand attacks from strong opponents alike without taking a severe toll on their fighting abilities, such as during their battle with Tartaglia, the second encounter with Signora, the rematch with Raiden Ei herself, the battle against Beisht (Osial's wife) and Scaramouche as the Shouki no Kami.
  • Interdimensional Travel : The twins traveled through multiple dimensions, prior to being intercepted and had their powers sealed by the Unknown God. The Traveler intends to find the statues of the Seven in order to get back their former powers.
  • Flight : As shown by the opening cutscene, the Traveler was able to fly using their wings, although it is unknown if they are machinery or if they can be summoned at will. Nevertheless, after their powers have been sealed, they are only currently able to glide with the wind glider given to them by Amber.
  • Cooking Proficiency : The Traveler can learn to cook multiple dishes from various regions and gradually master them through repeated cooking.
  • Alchemy Proficiency : With a Crafting Bench, the Traveler can transmute various materials into more precious ones via alchemy. They can even create potions that can aid them in battle.
  • Otherworldly Physiology : The Traveler is immune to certain cursed items that would otherwise bring harm to a normal person, such as the Festering Desire sword. Furthermore, they have the ability to purify corrupted items, such as Dvalin's bloodstained tears. They are immune to erosion and Irminsul's memory manipulation. (However, the siblings lost their descender status and became part of Teyvat, making them vulnerable to Irminsul and can't leave Teyvat.)
  • According to the Wings of Descension. The twins witness the birth and the death of stars. Even if it mean the massive stars which have short lifespans, it's still mean the twins millions years old if the description is to be take literally.
  • However the game still shares the same cosmolgy with Gun Girl Z , Honkai Impact 3rd , and Honkai: Star Rail , and thus Genshin Impact is still a de facto spin-off of Honkai series, but it is not referenced as much as in Honkai Star Rail like Honkai Impact .
  • From the beta test, it's implied that their world was destroyed by the Honkai, the same phenomena from Gun Girl Z and Honkai Impact 3rd . However, with the release of the game, this might no longer be canon.
  • Despite sharing abilities, the twins have different fighting styles. For instance, when using their Geo-element Burst Wake of Earth , Aether punches the ground while Lumine stomps instead.
  • Lumine has a stronger charged attack, while Aether runs faster and has more poise damage.
  • The Traveler and their sibling are both separated in a different world, which is similar to Akame and Kurome from Akame ga Kill! , in which Akame also has a lost sibling.
  • Their game is similar to the open world adventure video game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild .
  • Like Keqing and Xinyan , the Traveler's favorite music is rock music.
  • In most official media, Aether is depicted as the Traveler, with Lumine as the Princess of Abyss Order.
  • As of Version 5.0, Aether is still at the top of Genshin Impact character list when sorted alphabetically.
  • The Traveler was depicted by Rozaliya Olenyeva during the Honkai Impact 3rd x Genshin Impact collaboration.
  • Both siblings always call each other Aether (male) and Lumine (female), despite how the player named the Traveler at the beginning of the game.
  • Both the siblings have no birthday unless assigned by the player.

Character Details

The keeper is fading away; the creator has not yet come.

But the world shall burn no more, for you shall ascend.

Character Story 1

A boy and a girl stood amidst the tumult, under an unfamiliar sky.

You were a pair of traveling twins, passing through countless worlds during your journey.

Descending upon a continent named Teyvat, you hoped that you would be able to enjoy your time here.

But as you awoke among the falling stars, you saw the world in turmoil, a cataclysm raging across the land…

You sought to leave this place and move on to the next world, but then an unknown god stood before you, barring the way.

This deity was spotless, floating over a world of chaos.

Looking down on you.

The god took your only kin away, and you were sealed and cast into a deep slumber filled with nightmares…

When you reawakened, the world was changed.

The flames of war raged no longer, and nothing was left that looked familiar.

How long had you been asleep? You had no answers.

Thus, you began a lonely journey, seeking the deity that you had once laid eyes upon…

Character Story 2

After that, you met Paimon, and wandered together for some time.

You learned that this world has seven deities who rule the seven nations as the Seven Archons.

Your first stop was the free city of wine and song,  Mondstadt , a city built by the Anemo Archon.

As you stepped into Mondstadt as an outlander, it was, as the other nations were, beset on both sides by non-human and human threats.

The non-human threat was comprised of the confederacy known as the Abyss Order.

The human threat, on the other hand stemmed, from the ambition of the Tsaritsa, god of Snezhnaya.

The Abyss Order had corrupted an ally of the Anemo Archon, the Dragon of the East of the Four Winds of Mondstadt.

The envoys of Snezhnaya, for their part, used this opposition to the Abyss as an excuse to put pressure on Mondstadt.

These threats from without and within caused the return of the Anemo Archon, who took on the form of a bard and joined you in your journey to save the dragon.

Yet there was something then that you did not see — for as the dragon fell to the Abyss, a certain figure had been reflected in its eyes…

The one who rules the Abyss.

(S/he) had once traveled with you, and you had once crossed many worlds together.

Character Story 3

Character story 4, character story 5.

When faced with circumstances that they cannot control, humans often bemoan their powerlessness.

But if a person is found to have surpassing ambition even as their life reaches such a desperate turning point, then the gods would look upon them with favor.

This favor is the Vision, an external magical focus given to those who have been acknowledged by the gods which they can use to channel elemental power.

Celestia is the realm of the gods, and the wielders of Visions walk the earth below. When they depart from this world, the chosen will ascend.

After coming to this world, you often hear people speak of such things.

You, for your part, can never receive a Vision, for an alien lifeform does not belong…

Is it wise to allow a moment’s ambition to dominate one’s entire life?

You have needed to consider many such thought-provoking questions, ones that require lengthy consideration, during your journey through many worlds…

  • Unlike other characters, the Traveler’s Character Stories are unlocked by progressing in Archon Quests but not with higher Friendship Levels.
  • The Traveler’s Constellations are activated by “Memories” which are materials obtained through various progress milestones in the game, while other players consume Stella Fortunas which are received through wishing.
  • The Traveler does not possess a Vision but is able to make use of the power of Elements.
  • The gem on the Traveler’s clothes glows with the corresponding color of the element that the Traveler is currently resonating with.

Genshin Impact: 10 Chinese Cultural Influences You Never Noticed

Fortnite Just Killed Fall Guys And Nobody Seems To Care

Once human: how to get and use controllers, doctor doom has defeated a ton of marvel heroes and villains in fortnite.

Despite drawing heavily from Japanese media and anime, Genshin Impact is a wholly Chinese creation. Developed by the Chinese company miHoYo, Genshin Impact quickly became the biggest international release of a Chinese game in history. The game boasts gorgeous graphics, an open-world concept, and a gacha mechanic for exclusive characters. However, it’s free to play, and players can easily advance through Genshin Impact without spending money.

RELATED: Genshin Impact: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Lisa

Though Mondstadt — the first region of Teyvat — is heavily based off of Germany and/or Switzerland, Liyue takes inspiration from China. Here are a few Chinese cultural influences you never noticed in Genshin Impact.

10 Dendro As Wood

Most of Western culture acknowledges four elements as pillars of the world: fire, water, earth, and air. However, some cultures and peoples recognize up to 12 different elements. In the Chinese philosophy of Wuxing, five elements are considered: fire, water, earth, metal, and wood.

For the most part, metal refers to gold. Though Genshin doesn’t have metal as an element (opting to use ice — Cryo — instead), it does contain the wood element: Dendro. Wood can be used as a decently loose term since the Chinese word mù is occasionally translated as “tree.” Wood represents growth in all forms. Players can see this in action when fighting the large Dendro Slimes, as their primary attack is spawning more slimes.

9 The Power Of Constellations

Many cultures emphasize and rely on constellations for a variety of practices. Whether it be for directing seafarers in the night or part of local folklore, the stars are a constant across the world.

RELATED: Genshin Impact: 15 Food Recipes To Prioritize Cooking, Ranked

China is no exception to this, as Taoism views the constellations as the power of the gods. Taoist priests oftentimes have depictions of constellations sewn onto their robes. This symbol of godly power is its own mechanic in Genshin, which makes sense since the whole concept of Visions and Ascension rely on the gods of Teyvat deeming a mortal worthy of joining them.

8 Zhongli’s Symbolic Name

Zhongli’s name reveals so much about his story and questionably secret identity as Rex Lapis. For one, the name Zhongli itself is something of a pun. “Zhong” is often used as the word for clock and “li” is commonly used as the action of leaving. His name comes out to mean something like “clock leaving” or “clock away.” Localized, it can be taken to mean “off the clock,” referring to Zhongli leaving his position as Rex Lapis.

It can be a bit of a stretch, but considering the heavy Chinese media influence on Genshin Impact, it’s entirely likely.

7 The Liyue Qixing

The Liyue Qixing, or the Seven Stars of Liyue, are a collection of seven merchants and business leaders within Liyue. They have a scary amount of power, leading to the Traveler becoming a fugitive from the Millelith for a short while during the main Story Quest.

RELATED: Genshin Impact: Liyue's History In 5 Side Quests (& Guides For Each One)

Interestingly enough, the word "Qixing" refers to the seven stars that make up the Big Dipper. Each member of the Liyue Qixing has a title directly named after each star. Foreshadowing future roles in Liyue even more, Beidou is the Chinese name for the Big Dipper constellation . If intentional, Beidou will surely play a major role for the Liyue Qixing.

6 Rex Lapis’ Honorific

Honorifics are usually lost in translation when media from East Asian cultures is localized for English speaking countries. Chinese does indeed have its own set of honorifics, including those referring to gods and immortals.

In the Chinese version of the game, Rex Lapis holds the honorific title of dìjūn. This is usually added to the names of Taoist deities. However, there’s stronger ties to Taoism than this sprinkled throughout Liyue.

5 The Adepti And Taoism

The adepti of Liyue are specifically referred to as xiān in both the Chinese and Japanese versions of Genshin Impact. Within Taoism, the definition of xiān changes depending on the context of the word. Nevertheless, it can be boiled down to an immortal. Most likely not by coincidence, xiān can also refer to supernatural animals, such as Mountain Shaper, Moon Carver, and Cloud Retainer.

The English translation of the game keeps with the Taoist themes. Those who pursue and devote their lives to Taoism are referred to as adepts. This is most likely where the translation of xiān to adepti comes from.

4 Ascension To Godhood

Though mortals becoming gods isn’t an inherently Chinese concept, Genshin Impact contains a direct reference to this phenomenon in Chinese mythology. Venti isn’t the most straightforward character in the game and that trait crosses over into the Genshin Impact manga . When Aether asks Venti if mortals who ascend to Celestia truly become gods, Venti instead shares an anecdote of those who ascended in their own, distant worlds. One of the names he mentions is Pangu of Chinese mythology.

RELATED: Genshin Impact: 10 Side Quests To Do Immediately When Starting Your Adventure

Though not a true mortal, Pangu is said to have separated heaven and earth. Upon his death, every part of his being contributed to the world - his breath became the wind, his eyes became the sun and the moon, etc. Despite ultimately dying, Pangu’s lifespan was at least 54,000 years.

3 Zhongli’s Namesake

Furthering how much thought went into Zhongli, he may indeed be named after one of the Taoist xian. Taoism recognizes the Bāxiān, or Eight Immortals, following the tradition of mortals ascending to godhood. One of the eight members is Zhongli Quan, who is often associated with death and the ability to create silver and gold.

Zhongli runs the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor in Liyue Harbor and, as Morax, has Teyvat’s currency named after him. All things considered, that’s pretty on the nose.

2 Qiqi The Jiangshi

Referred to as just a zombie in the English translation, Qiqi is actually a specific type of zombie known as a jiangshi. The jiangshi, or “hopping zombie,” is actually a somewhat recent folklore development, dating back to the late 1700s in the middle of the Qing dynasty.

The “jiang” part of jiangshi literally translates to “stiff,” implying that rigor mortis has already occurred. According to Qiqi’s handbook, she has instructions for calisthenics, most likely to help combat rigor mortis. Her appearance matches that of popular jiangshi depictions, including the round-top hat and talisman. Within one of her character stories, Qiqi is depicted as a more traditional jiangshi, flying into a murderous fit before being sealed in amber by Mountain Shaper. Now, she seems to be benevolent and is a wonderful asset to the Traveler’s team.

1 The Twins’ Chinese Names

The male Traveler’s Chinese name is Kong, which translates to “air” or “sky.” Lumine’s translates in a similar way too, with Ying meaning fluorescent. Aether’s English name is more of a nod to the game’s Chinese origins. Going back to the traditional Chinese elemental system, Void (or Null) is also considered an element. Guess what’s another name for void? Aether.

Chinese philosophy also breaks down the universe into heaven and earth. Arguably, either of the twins could fulfill the concept of heaven since both have names with connections to the sky, or heavens, and at the beginning of the game, have the ability to fly.

Greetings, Travelers!

It's been almost five whole months since Genshin Impact went live, and the time seems to have flown by! We do hope you're all enjoying a smooth journey through Teyvat. Since the game's release, we have received a great deal of feedback and suggestions from Travelers and we've systematically recorded each one for the developers. We deeply appreciate all the time, energy, and passion everyone puts in to these suggestions.

In the midst of this, many of you have expressed an interest in learning more about how some of Genshin Impact's characters are created. As it happens, one character who has received an especially high amount of attention is Xiao, who has now entered the live game with the release of Version 1.3, "All That Glitters." So, for this issue, we've invited colleagues from the Creative Concept & Writing, Concept Art, and Animation departments to explain a bit about the thought process behind everyone's favorite Vigilant Yaksha.

1. The Vigilant Yaksha Is Born: A Character Woven From Cultural Symbolism

Hello everyone, my name is Zhongyuan from the Creative Concept & Writing department of miHoYo.

The first part of the process when designing characters for Genshin Impact is to pin down who the character is at their core. In this step, we need to establish the features that set this character apart from other characters. Besides ensuring that this character will make a strong impression on people, these features are used to evaluate what this character's position in the world of Genshin Impact will be. Characters are not just lumps of rock that we can place anywhere we want in the environment; they are autonomous individuals, each one with a complex set of past, present, and future interactions with the world of Teyvat. Their core features, then, represent their initial points of contact with the world. They are the guiding principles behind all the character's actions and how they live their life.

Xiao was one of the first Liyue characters we came up with. He began with our colleague CiCi's proposal for a young warrior character, which everyone involved in the character evaluation process approved of. The Art team envisaged him as a young man of great beauty, while colleagues in Creative Concept & Writing hoped to position him as a beautiful adeptus. Both sides were on the same page, and thus Xiao became our very first character planned with the identity of "mighty and illuminated adeptus."

Although this is somewhat tangential, I'd like to take a moment here to give a little more detail on the adepti in the Genshin Impact universe, given that so many players have expressed an interest in this topic. The adepti are based on the idea of demigod-like "immortals" (仙人 xianren) in Daoism, and are referred to by the honorific title "sanyan wuxian" (三眼五显), literally "three eyes and five manifestations" (but localized in English as "mighty and illuminated"). The adepti are classed as non-human, based on the notion that "All who have nine orifices can achieve immortality through self-discipline," a line uttered by the "Monkey King" Sun Wukong in the Ming-dynasty novel Journey to the West. This means that animals are also capable of achieving adeptus status. However, humans have a higher purpose than adepti in the world of Teyvat, so for this reason, only those of non-human status can be referred to as "adepti" in Liyue. The "three eyes" part of the adepti's title refers to the "third eye" possessed by those with the ability to manipulate elemental energy, which for humans takes the form of a Vision. For adepti such as Cloud Retainer and Mountain Shaper, the human understanding is that they must have an "inner eye" that serves the same purpose as a Vision. Xiao, however, typically appears in a human form, so he dutifully wears a Vision to comply with the expected norm.

traveller in chinese genshin

After the character's fundamentals are established, the next step is to design their Constellation and refine their cultural background.

Outside of Genshin Impact, the term "sanyan wuxian" can be traced back to ancient Chinese texts and also appears in supernatural fiction from the Late Imperial period (c. 1368–1911 CE). In both cases, it typically describes the Daoist deity Huaguang Tianwang (华光天王, "Heavenly King of Radiant Light"), also known as Ma Lingguan (马灵官, "Numinous Official Ma"). Huaguang Tianwang is a well-known guardian deity, who appears in the Ming-dynasty novel Journey to the South, in which he has an altercation with Sun Wukong. Research into folk culture also shows there is precedent to connect deities known as Wuxian (五显, "Five manifestations" or "Five Named Xian") with a group of malevolent deities known as Wutong (五通, "Five Powers" or "Five Named Tong"), which includes the one-legged, people-eating, mountain-dwelling demons known as Shanxiao (山魈, "mountain demon").

So, at the most hidden but fundamental level of this character's core, we decided on the name Xiao (魈) and the identity of a guardian-adeptus. The name Xiao is used to hide his past, but also embodies this character at the innermost part of his soul. It is the starting point for all further character development and cultural embellishments.

Another dimension of Xiao's design was that he wields an Anemo Vision and has a fleet-footed and agile combat style that includes the unique ability to propel himself through the air. To stay true to this, we decided to design his Constellation and skills around the idea of the yaksha in Buddhism. This meant we were conflating ideas from different sources; nevertheless, the yaksha had become a well-established figure in Chinese folk legends by at least the end of the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE). The yaksha element ended up being a crucial part of Xiao's design that really helped us flesh him out in terms of his image.

The two archetypal stories of "guardian yaksha" and "numinous official's redemption" both involve a malevolent spirit on a path towards goodness, which was consistent with the general direction of Xiao's character core. Furthermore, his physical agility matched very well with another term for yaksha in Chinese, "Swift and nimble spirit" (捷疾鬼 jieji gui). Through further development of the yaksha concept, we arrived at the decision that the other fundamental aspect of Xiao's identity would be his role as a guardian yaksha in service of a monarch, or in this case, an archon.

One detail is particularly worth mentioning here. There is a well-known group of guardian yakshas in some Buddhist denominations known as the Twelve Heavenly Generals. All but one of them correspond to different animals in the Chinese zodiac, while Mekhila, who would otherwise correspond to the rooster, is instead associated with a bird deity, the golden-winged Garuda, a figure from various Indian religions. The story goes that this golden-winged bird deity was a fearsome predator who ate only evil dragons, until one day the dragon poison he had consumed became too much for him to bear, and he burned to death, leaving only a crystal heart behind. This story seemed to resonate with aspects of Xiao's character. Furthermore, the Chinese name Jinchi Peng Wang Niao (金翅鹏王鸟, "Golden Winged Great Peng") embodies a history of evolution — it represents a convergence between Garuda and the Peng, a Chinese mythological bird, showing that some adaptation occurred in the process of his adoption into Chinese religion. After much consideration, we decided to use the Golden Winged Great Peng as the basis for Xiao's Constellation. In English, Xiao's Constellation has been localized as "Alatus Nemeseos," in reference to the bird deity and Xiao's role as the nemesis of evil.

traveller in chinese genshin

Finally, we conducted an overall review of Xiao's character profile. During this process, we noticed that Xiao's origins were very complex: Some aspects of his identity were based on folk legends while others drew on religious stories. From mountain demon, to Daoist deity, to guardian yaksha, to mythological bird, this was a uniquely rich character formed from the convergence and refashioning of many ideas in one place. More importantly, all these elements were consistent with each other at the narrative layer, creating a strong and cohesive impression of who this character is and adding clear, nuanced substance to his story. This degree of complexity gave Xiao just the depth and appeal that we were hoping for with this character: we hoped to create something entirely new through the convergence and fusion of various cultural elements, and we hope that the end result, Xiao, possesses the power, aesthetic value, and maturity to become a true cultural icon.

The next step was shaping the character's personality and behavior.

After close consultation with Concept Art colleagues, Creative Concept & Writing further fine-tuned the details of this character's content. To pick one example, we all felt that the distinctive image of a young warrior was an important one that we wanted to keep. This begged the question: if Xiao is a warrior, who or what is he waging war against? We quickly got to thinking about a war between the gods. (See section 2 of this article for how Concept Art developed the mask design based on this idea.) One of the basic rules of the Genshin Impact world is that gods cannot be completely destroyed — even if a god's physical form is destroyed, its will and power live on. The remnants and the wrath of the defeated god will remain in the world, waiting for opportunities to cause chaos. To keep Liyue safe from this threat, somebody has to go and keep them at bay.

The decision to release Xiao at Lantern Rite was to tie in with the Chinese custom of driving away evil spirits at the new year, since Xiao's role in Liyue is that of a protector in precisely this capacity.

During festivals, people offer up incense and pray to the adepti for their protection. But they do not pray to Xiao. For Xiao is no lucky star that promises fame and fortune — he is a demon-hunting yaksha. After the lantern lights of Liyue have faded, the thankless battle to protect the city goes on unseen. It is an endless battle, and there can be no victor.

The Traveler's first impression of Xiao is most likely to be of a silent and brooding individual, a courageous and competent fighter, and someone who harbors great suffering. This suffering comes from within Xiao himself. One aspect is that the years of intense, never-ending battle against the remnants of defeated gods have led to him resigning himself to the fact that fighting is all he is good at. The other aspect is that the remnants have a negative effect on him, while the constant killing places a karmic burden on him, causing him mental and spiritual anguish.

This inner suffering is present in the design of his skills: when Xiao uses "Bane of All Evil," he dons his mask, which continually enhances his combat abilities but also continually drains his health. This demonstrates the great suffering he must endure as a consequence of using this power.

After the Traveler has spent some time with Xiao, perhaps they can sense that deep down, Xiao has a gentler side. Xiao is by no means a cruel and callous individual, he is simply reticent to show his emotions to others.

Xiao always keeps his distance from the hustle and bustle of human society. This is not because he doesn't care about humanity, but is due to his role as a protector. He must wage war against dark forces out of sight of humans, and endure a suffering that is incomprehensible to them. Despite this, he does not despise humanity. Humans are the foundation of his millennia-old contract with Rex Lapis, and the reason he silently fights to protect every living soul in Liyue.

traveller in chinese genshin

The player's first offer to Xiao is to go to the Lantern Rite together to experience the atmosphere. Xiao instinctively refuses requests of this nature— not because he dislikes the idea, but out of avoidance. For Xiao, who has lived for millennia, the human world is a brilliant but fleeting flash of light; a wisp of cloud floating by; a firework on the horizon. And as the one tasked with defending this flurry of activity, he is like a caged beast circling the fire of a stove: fearful, but also full of curiosity. Having watched from a distance for so long, he would not know how to join in with the crowd even if he tried.

The lanterns rise up into the night sky, as if to shine along with the stars. Xiao watches this beautiful sight alone from a mountaintop, and just like anyone else, he senses the sentiment behind them, and he understands that the reason people craft these beautiful things is to remember those who fought alongside him in the past. As one who lived through the events of the past and remembers it all, he is, of course, able to appreciate the well-wishes that the lanterns represent. He understands kindness and gratitude, but doesn't know how to interact with ordinary people, nor does he know what his place is among all the excitement and noise. This lonely state of existence is the source of his melancholy. It has caused time to stand still, leading to him still having a very young mentality even to this day.

During the main Liyue questline, Xiao came to the Traveler's rescue in their moment of peril. In Version 1.3 "All That Glitters," we invite Travelers once again to experience a story that provides a glimpse into Xiao's seldom-shown gentle nature, as well as the trust, hidden deep within his heart, that he places in you.

2. A Young Adeptus: Detail-Based Design

Hello everyone, this is D and SS from the Genshin Impact Art team. We worked on the concept art for Xiao.

After the initial brief, we produced a first draft of Xiao's design based on the young warrior concept. As you can see, Xiao's expression in this version is far from the stern one he wears today. He has a gentler temperament and he is smiling. In this sense, he captures a more traditional notion of what a Daoist immortal (or in Genshin Impact terms, an adeptus) might look like. After more discussion with Creative Concept & Writing colleagues and taking more of his back story into account, we decided on the green version.

traveller in chinese genshin

Xiao is an adeptus who protects Liyue, and in the course of his long battle against the remnants of defeated gods all over Liyue, he has become poisoned by their nefarious energy. Based on this background, Xiao's upper body uses white and green, which represent the adepti and correlate to his Anemo Vision. For his lower body, we used darker colors to represent the dark, malevolent power that exists inside him.

traveller in chinese genshin

Based on these same principles, we gave him dark hair with highlights, and also created some interplay between light and dark in his attack animations. The darkness represents the destructive power of fierce battle, while the fragments and orbs of light that he gives off come from the fact that he is an adeptus.

Xiao may have the appearance of a young man, but his true age is something over two thousand years.
Fortunately, people do not tend to underestimate him on the basis of his appearance — one only needs to spend a short time with Xiao to recognize that he is not someone to be trifled with.
Xiao is a man of few words. He is highly dangerous, and has the most piercing gaze you've ever seen.

Given Xiao's true age and his identity as an adeptus, we decided to give him some jade jewelry to bring a sense of longevity and mystery. Accordingly, his legs, wrists, and shoulders feature decorative jade as well as various other objects bearing simple motifs. Meanwhile, to match his young appearance with striking good looks, we tailored his clothing (especially on the upper body) using a more modern design, displaying his vibrancy and agility.

On the one hand, Xiao is an immortal adeptus, while on the other hand, he is a young warrior. This is a great variance in image, and it posed a significant challenge for us from an art perspective. Traditionally, an immortal is imagined as a scholarly figure dressed in long, flowing robes with wide sleeves, who is fairly reserved in the movements of their hands and feet. But Xiao, as a master of the dance-like art of polearm combat and a fleet-footed yaksha, required clothing that offers both protection and freedom of movement. Furthermore, we also knew that there were strict limits on any flowing parts of his outfit due to the risk of clipping they would create after 3D modeling.

So we made Xiao's garments close-fitting and short-sleeved, put some light gauntlets on his wrists, and added some religious paraphernalia such as a censer and a vajra. Meanwhile, his streamers and the breechcloths around his waist are decorated with a cloud motif to add a sense of antiquity. In this way, we achieved a union between practicality and ethereality.

traveller in chinese genshin

"Bane of All Evil" — the four words that sum up what Xiao has experienced over the past millennia, according to Liyue's rulers who know the truth about him

In the design of Xiao's mask, we referenced aspects of the masks traditionally used in exorcism rituals as part of Nuo (傩) folk religion.

The main colors used in these masks are black, blue, and gold, the eyes are bright but not flamboyant, and in general the masks look solemn but also mysterious. The sinister-looking bulging eyes, fangs, and horns instill fear in the viewer. The eye in the center of the forehead represents omniscience and the flame motifs make it all the more imposing, the intent being to cause all onlookers to cower in fear.

traveller in chinese genshin

Xiao's release coincides with the ancient festival of Lantern Rite. We would like to use this historic occasion as a chance to send our best wishes to everyone — here's to deliverance from the ills that plague the real world as well as those that face us in the world of Teyvat. To fans of Xiao reading this, we hope you feel that learning a little about the design ethos gave you the chance to better understand and connect with this character.

3. Vanquishing Demons: Animating & Debugging

Greetings, Travelers. This is Xiaolong from the Genshin Impact Animation department.

When work on Genshin Impact first began, we in the Animation team set ourselves a rather challenging objective — to provide players with an animation experience as smooth as you would see when watching an animated film. To achieve this goal, we invested a significant amount of time and resources into making character movements as natural and polished as possible. Our hope was that players could view these animations many times without tiring of them.

When we received the character profile and concept art, the whole Animation team got very excited. "Conqueror of Demons," "Vigilant Yaksha," "mighty and illuminated adeptus"... As the image of Liyue's sworn protector emerged before our eyes, equally devastating in looks as in combat, everyone in the team wanted to be a part of it. We felt that in a sense, Creative Concept & Writing and Concept Art had created his soul, and our job as animators was to place his soul inside his body.

As a Liyue character, Xiao's movements naturally had to incorporate some Eastern elements. The notion of a classic martial arts hero instantly came to mind, and a thought took hold in my mind: "I have to capture something of this iconic Eastern aesthetic to show to players around the world, even if only a tiny glimpse of it."

In terms of how to combine polearm combat with Eastern elements, naturally we had plenty of martial arts tradition to draw on. But as an adeptus who has fought countless battles in his past, Xiao could hardly be limited to the physical techniques themselves. So, the way we animated him had to include Eastern elements as well as capture the swift and decisive combat style of a guardian yaksha who has honed his skills over thousands of years.

In the third phase of Xiao's Normal Attack, he performs a sidewards somersault. Typically, after performing a movement like this, one would expect to see further movement of the body to release the momentum. But to show Xiao's quick and nimble physical ability, we drew on the Chinese martial arts trope of the body being as "light as a leaf" as well as skills from parkour to have Xiao come to a soft and steady landing after his mid-air roll.

Clip from Flying Swords of Dragon Gate

traveller in chinese genshin

Xiao's elemental affiliation is Anemo, and he was stated in his profile as having strong self-propulsion skills. After some brainstorming, we decided that we wanted the visual effect of Xiao's Elemental Skill to be like an arrow flying in a straight line through the air. When the skill ends, we have him slide along the ground as he slowly turns around, making the movement appear effortless and graceful.

Clip from Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon

traveller in chinese genshin

As mentioned earlier, we wanted to make everything look as polished as possible. This meant ironing out a lot of details. Every flap of clothing and every strand of hair has undergone an animator's repeated scrutiny. After reviewing countless motion effects produced with dynamic simulation, we would select the one we were happiest with and polish the key frames further to finally produce the heroic Vigilant Yaksha we were happy with, whose every movement was filled with explosive energy and speed, and whose every posture in every frame was picture perfect.

We couldn't discuss Xiao without mentioning his mask, a key element which appears both in his Elemental Burst as well as his idle animations. Over the millennia, Xiao has fought constantly with the remnants of defeated gods and with all manner of monsters; at the same time, the burden of karmic debt has constantly been accumulating within him. When he dons his mask, this karmic debt manifests itself, greatly enhancing both his combat abilities as well as the suffering he must endure. And yet, time after time, he dons his mask to protect Liyue; time after time, he stays true to his contract.

According to Xiao's profile, his deepest, most hidden element is gentleness. When all identities and labels are cast aside, Xiao has a gentle side, shown in his curiosity towards phenomena in the human world, but he is very reticent to show this side of himself to others. This aspect was very difficult to capture in his animations, so in the end we created an idle animation that tells a short story: a spark of light that seems to be alive draws near; Xiao stretches out his hand to try to make contact with it, but because of his karma-ravaged constitution, he succeeds only in causing the spirit to fly away. He knew this would be the inevitable conclusion, but feels dejected all the same.

It took this kind of conflict between complex emotions to convey this character's richness and breathe life into his soul.

To perfect how Xiao is presented, our Technical Animation team used optical motion capture technology, which captures high-precision data to accurately recreate the finer details of the actor's limb movements. Meanwhile, more complex combat movements that could not be easily recreated in real life required the animator to go through and fine-tune the position of each bone and the movement of each streamer. On the foundation of smooth and natural animation, this added an additional element of exaggeration and novelty.

We are currently in the process of researching and developing character animation styles for several future world regions. Our dream has always been to create fresh, dynamic characters, build a vibrant fantasy world, and fully develop the various cultures across the different regions of Teyvat. Although plenty of challenges await us on the road ahead, we feel that the chance to bring you a product that is a true labor of love is something worth striving for.

Thanks to all our colleagues who worked on this article. We hope everyone reading it feels they got to understand something new about how we develop characters for Genshin Impact.

Please leave a comment if there is any aspect of Genshin Impact's research and development that you are interested in. We will continue to get colleagues from different departments to share their experiences and reflections with everyone.

Finally, thanks once again to all Travelers for your ongoing interest and support. See you again soon!

Rumor: Genshin Impact Leak Hints at Multiple Natlan Characters' Rarities

Genshin impact reveals new quality-of-life and difficulty changes for 5.0, genshin impact leak showcases new party setup feature.

  • A new leak is detailing how players will be able to obtain the Pyro version of the Traveler during the story of the Natlan region.
  • The leak suggests that the Pyro Traveler will be integrated into the Archon Quest for the region, with players receiving Natlan's Gnosis from Mavuika.
  • Natlan will feature several other opportunities for free characters, including Bennett from an event and a free selector for a standard banner five-star character.

A recent leak from Genshin Impact is teasing how players will be able to acquire the Pyro version of the Traveler, hinting at major story implications for the new variant. The upcoming addition of Natlan to the HoYoverse RPG has already been shown to feature a wide range of content for players following its launch later this month. Natlan will debut with three new characters added to the RPG's roster, alongside new bosses to challenge and the next expansion of the game's Archon Quest. Now, one leak is teasing a highly-anticipated addition for the region.

Throughout Genshin Impact 's nearly four-year-long life, HoYoverse has given players multiple different versions of the game's protagonist, the Traveler. Each region introduces a new elemental variant for the character, often featuring sweeping changes to the Traveler's moveset and abilities. Some variants of the Traveler have even seen inclusions in some of Genshin Impact 's most powerful team compositions, like the Dendro Traveler's utility in Bloom teams. However, Natlan's regional variant looks to be integrated into the region's main story.

A recent leak from Genshin Impact is hinting at the in-game rarities for several characters expected to debut during the game's Natlan cycle.

Genshin Impact Leak Hints at Story Event for Pyro Traveler

A new leak shared by Genshin Impact leaker White is teasing how players will be able to acquire the Pyro Traveler within Natlan's main story . According to the leak, the Pyro Traveler will be directly integrated into the main story of the region, with Pyro Archon Mavuika said to give the Pyro Gnosis to the Traveler at the conclusion of the story. The regional Archon Quests have often revolved around each Archon's Gnosis, with the Fatui looking to gather all the different elemental Gnoses. The leak also hints at the Pyro Traveler's role, claiming them to be a "mini Bennett" playing a support role.

The addition of the Pyro Traveler through Natlan's main story would follow in the footsteps of another of HoYoverse's flagship games. Honkai: Star Rail similarly locks different variants of the Trailblazer behind story progression, with players currently able to acquire two new versions of the main character. Genshin Impact has previously made its elemental Travelers easy to acquire, with players only needing to interact with a Statue of the Seven found in a new region. The leak did not confirm which update will feature the story event granting players the Pyro Traveler.

Alongside the eventual addition of the Pyro Traveler, HoYoverse has revealed plenty of opportunities for Genshin Impact players to pick up some free characters soon. An event during Version 5.0 will grant players a free copy of Pyro four-star character Bennett, one of the game's most popular and powerful supports. The fourth anniversary rewards will also feature a five-star character selector, allowing Genshin Impact players to acquire a free copy of one of Genshin Impact 's standard five-star characters . Fans of Genshin Impact won't have to wait much longer to dive into all of Natlan's new content.

Mihoyo gives much-anticipated update on ‘Genshin Impact’ anime

Image of Alexandria Lopez

Since its announcement in 2022, there has been little to no update on the Genshin Impact anime—until now.

Earlier this year, the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party announced its plans to turn Shanghai into a “Film City.” It’s been collaborating with leading industry companies, such as Tencent Games, IMAX China, and more to garner opinions and suggestions.

One of the companies they visited is Mihoyo, which previously announced in 2022 that it would be working with Ufotable to produce a Genshin Impact anime. Following the visit, it seems the company has a tentative timeline for when the anime will be released.

When will the Genshin Impact anime be released?

Mihoyo will be implementing a “Three-Year Action Plan” to hold Shanghai’s vision of turning into a “Film City.” With that, Mihoyo will be tasked to publicize its Genshin Impact anime collaboration with Ufotable, as well as other potential projects. Therefore, fans can expect the Genshin Impact anime to be released by 2027.

The Film Department of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party also noted that, as a leading company in the gaming industry, Mihoyo has advantages in IP creation. This sentiment was proven by the company’s experience in innovating games while incorporating both traditional Chinese culture and the culture of other countries.

While the Genshin Impact anime has been confirmed and is in the works, other titles such as Honkai: Star Rail may be considered for future adaptions, such as an animated feature film.

When will the next Genshin Impact update be released?

While waiting for the Genshin Impact anime, it might be best to keep up with the game. The version 5.0 update for Genshin Impact is set to be released on August 28, 2024. Titled, “Flowers Resplendent on the Sun-Scorched Sojourn,” the update introduces Natlan, the sixth region to be included in the Teyvat-verse. Natlan is the second-to-last region to be revealed, with Snezhnaya expected to be the final region in the game.

Players will explore the fiery region that is Natlan, the land governed by the Pyro Archon. In the teaser, Natlan is depicted on the brink of extinction, and it’s up to the Traveler to save the region from its disastrous fate.

The teaser also gave players a glimpse into new characters: Kachina, who maneuvers using a top-like device, Kinich, a boy with vine-like powers allowing him to swing across even the most dangerous of environments, and Mualani, who rides a shark. These characters will most likely be included in the upcoming banner.

Royal Navy watches Chinese warships travelling through UK waters

The navy says it is not common for Chinese ships to transit through UK waters under the eye of the British and the last time it happened was in 2019.

Two Chinese warships have travelled through UK waters closely watched by a British frigate in a rare transit, the Royal Navy has revealed.

HMS Richmond kept a "close watch" on the Chinese Navy task group as it passed the UK twice in three weeks, travelling to and from Russia .

Monitoring foreign warships is a routine operation for the navy but it is far more common for the Ministry of Defence to publicise the tracking of Russian ships rather than vessels deployed by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (Navy).

Armed Forces minister Luke Pollard said: "These escorts are a clear demonstration of how the Royal Navy continues to protect the sovereignty of UK waters.

"Working closely with our allies to support Euro-Atlantic security is a top priority for this government.

"I thank the crew of HMS Richmond for conducting a safe and professional transit and all they do in keeping our nation secure at home and strong abroad."

The British warship monitored China's Jiaozuo, a 7,500-tonne destroyer, and Honghu, a 23,400-tonne supply ship, as they made their journey back and forth through the North Sea and into the Channel.

A French warship and a patrol ship from the Belgian navy also shared the task of watching the Chinese vessels.

HMS Richmond's commanding officer, Commander Richard Kemp, said: "By maintaining a visible and persistent presence, the Royal Navy demonstrates our commitment to the NATO alliance and in maintaining maritime security which is crucial to our national interests."

The two Chinese ships initially passed through UK waters on the way to St Petersburg to take part in an annual event called Russian Navy Day at the end of July.

They then returned a couple of weeks later. The date of the return journey was not clear from the Royal Navy statement, released on Saturday.

Chinese envoy dares eu and us to 'catch up' in electric vehicles to justify tariffs.

The US and European Union should step up production of affordable electric vehicles to justify their tariffs on Chinese EVs, Beijing's top envoy in South Africa said, speaking ahead of a major China-Africa summit where green energy is expected to be high on the agenda.

Chinese ambassador Wu Peng said at a climate change event in Pretoria on Thursday that China - a leader in EV technology, solar energy and other new energy products - had played a big role in cutting harmful carbon emissions.

In 2023, China produced nearly 9.5 million electric vehicles and exported nearly 1.8 million, which helped cut global carbon emissions by about 50 million tonnes, Wu said.

Do you have questions about the biggest topics and trends from around the world? Get the answers with SCMP Knowledge , our new platform of curated content with explainers, FAQs, analyses and infographics brought to you by our award-winning team.

Wu then challenged the EU and US, which have imposed high tariffs on Chinese EVs , to catch up to China in making green vehicles.

"Let's wait and see. If they can catch up to produce more EVs [that are] affordable for the customers in a very quick way, I think that's OK, no problem," he said. "But if they don't, I think [the tariff policy is] a little bit unreasonable."

Wu made the comments during a climate change and just transition workshop organised by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and the Chinese embassy in South Africa ahead of next month's 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit.

The Chinese diplomat noted that in 2023, over half of the world's newly installed renewable energy capacity came from China. Additionally, China's total investment in the new energy sector reached US$676 billion, accounting for 38 per cent of total global investment, Wu said.

Wu, who became China's ambassador to South Africa in June, said the US and EU continued to blame China for what they called "overcapacity" in the EV sector, but no country should be blamed for production capacity in the green energy industry.

"If we are truly serious in tackling climate change, green energy production capacity in any country actually belongs to the whole world," Wu said.

On June 12, the European Commission shocked China by announcing it would impose additional tariffs of up to 38 per cent on imported Chinese electric vehicles from July 4.

The news came just a month after the US announced similar plans to increase duties for Chinese EVs from 25 per cent to 100 per cent.

The tariff increases are the result of the European Commission's anti-subsidy investigation launched last October. Brussels and Washington have both accused China of distorting the market by giving subsidies to Chinese carmakers, leading to an influx of lower-cost EVs.

China also produces 70 per cent of the world's solar and wind farm equipment and other key components.

"Yes, we export these green energy products to developed countries. They may not be very happy about it," Wu said.

He said the US and EU "should be aware that it is exactly these made-in-China products that help reduce the carbon dioxide emissions for those developed countries by about 570 million tonnes per year".

That amounted to nearly 41 per cent of the world's carbon savings from renewable energy in the same period, Wu added.

According to Wu, green development cooperation will feature in the discussions at the FOCAC ministerial conference, set to start on September 3 in Beijing.

"I found that we have a lot of common language with African ambassadors based in Beijing. They said the topic of green development must be in the theme, and we totally agree with that," he said, referring to a meeting he held with African envoys earlier this year when he was still the director general for African affairs at China's foreign ministry.

Wu said China had already invested heavily in Africa's green energy industry , such as in Morocco's NOOR II and NOOR III concentrated solar power projects in Ouarzazate, Egypt's 500-megawatt Gulf of Suez II wind farm and the Garissa solar power plant in Kenya.

"China has implemented hundreds of clean energy power generation and green projects in Africa, many of which have been landmark projects for local clean energy development," Wu said.

China has signed 18 cooperation documents on climate change with 16 African countries including Nigeria, Ethiopia and Benin.

Cobus van Staden, research associate at SAIIA and managing editor at China-Global South Project, said he expected green energy cooperation to be on the FOCAC agenda since China had already promised more renewable energy investment during the previous FOCAC summit in 2021.

"This provided a glimpse into the emerging centrality of green energy in China's Belt and Road Initiative , as seen in announcements at October 2023's Belt and Road Forum. Look for a strong emphasis on green energy cooperation at FOCAC 2024," van Staden said.

Genshin Impact welcomes the sixth major nation of Teyvat with version 5.0 going live August 28

Genshin Impact welcomes the sixth major nation of Teyvat with version 5.0 going live August 28

Featuring details on three new companions and the six tribes of the Natlan nation.

traveller in chinese genshin

Greetings, Travelers! As Genshin Impact approaches its fifth year, we are excited to welcome the sixth major nation of Teyvat — Natlan, in the upcoming version 5.0 Flowers Resplendent on the Sun-Scorched Sojourn going live on August 28. Known as the Nation of War or the Nation of Pyro where Saurians have lived alongside humans since time immemorial, Natlan and her people are distinguished from other nations not only by their unique tribal traditions and natural environments, but also by their agility and their unparalleled movement capabilities blessed by the power of Pyro. Today, we’ll share some useful tips to help you explore this new region like a local or in the form of a Saurian!

traveller in chinese genshin

We would also like to invite all Travelers who have completed Archon Quest Prologue: Act III Song of Dragon and Freedom in Mondstadt to visit Natlan using an unlocked Teleport Waypoint located at its entrance. Travelers who reached Adventure Rank 28 or above who have completed the Archon Quest Chapter I: Act III A New Star Approaches in Liyue can move on to the Archon Quests in Natlan without having to first complete the prerequisite quests of other nations.

Become a Saurian

The dragons in Natlan are called Saurians, and they are the result of a long evolution and coexisting with humans. Located west of the Desert of Hadramaveth in Sumeru, Natlan has a varied panorama ranging from canyons and cliffs to flowing waters and hot springs, and even dangerous volcanoes. Version 5.0 will offer the opportunity to meet three of the six local tribes, the Children of Echoes, the Scions of the Canopy, and the People of the Springs, to discover how their members move in steep and difficult-to-cross landscapes thanks to their respective Saurians.

traveller in chinese genshin

For reasons that are still unclear, Travelers are unable to unlock the power of the Pyro element upon their arrival in Natlan, but you will be able to transform yourself into a Saurian temporarily by indwelling them or their Spiritsconce to roam around during your adventure!

The first Saurian you may indwell is a Tepetlisaurus. They are faithful companions taken in by the Children of Echoes, the tribe known for its expert miners and talented dancers inside the canyon. Transforming into a Tepetlisaurus allows you to burrow underground and climb cliffs. By indwelling a Yumkasaurus, you will be able to move travel through mid-air swiftly, reach high places with ease, and experience for yourself why the Scions of the Canopy that hang from steep cliffs with ropes, adore these Saurians as extreme sports enthusiasts. If you approach the People of the Springs, a laidback tribe who is known for their hot springs, try indwelling the Koholasarus to take a dip in the water, hot springs, and even the flowing Phlogiston streams in the air.

Use a new resource

In the Nation of Pyro, the Pyro element can materialize as a unique resource known as Phlogiston. Phlogiston comes in different forms and can be utilized by the locals as a brand-new resource in movement or combat. Once you indwell a Saurian, you may notice that your skills will consume a separate Phlogiston bar located to the right of your Saurian form. Natlan’s characters also have a Phlogiston bar which appears above their HP bar. Throughout your journey, you may come across Phlogiston, either as harvestable resources, or useful tools such as the Spiritways of flowing Phlogiston, offering fast tracks to the Koholasarus and warriors from the People of the Springs to travel.

Warriors of Natlan can further enhance their abilities through the ancient ritual of Phlogiston Engravings, and thus gain the Nightsoul’s Blessing. Glowing patterns will appear on characters under the influence of the Nightsoul’s Blessing, granting them an advantage in combat.

Team up with local warriors

As the Nation of War, Natlan has experienced countless crises and dangers in numerous battles in which both locals and Saurians have fought valiantly. The Ancient Names of brave warriors are passed down from generation to generation to honor their legacy. At the Stadium of the Sacred Flame, each of the six tribes designates a Champion from among the greatest warriors who make up its ranks, and we will have the opportunity to recruit three of them from the Children of Echoes, the Scions of the Canopy, and the People of the Springs. Each of these Champions is distinguished by unique traits and abilities reflecting their tribe.

traveller in chinese genshin

Our first companion from Natlan is Kachina, a four-star Geo polearm wielder from the Children of Echoes. Not only will we meet her from the very beginning of our journey, we can even recruit her for free as a reward for completing Act I of Natlan’s Archon Quest. Kachina is able to summon Turbo Twirly and ride it to scale walls and cliffs in daily exploration, and also unleash ground-slam attacks to deal AoE Geo DMG in combat.

Kinich, famous for his hunting skills in the Scions of the Canopy, is a five-star Dendro claymore warrior who wields the grappling hook expertly, so as to swiftly swing through the air and easily reach great heights, or link to enemies and perform Loop Shots to deal significant damage. Interestingly, Kinich is accompanied by the Almighty Dragonlord, Ajaw, who is capable of unleashing dragon-breaths at intervals to deal AoE Dendro DMG when Kinich casts his Elemental Burst.

If you’re visiting the People of the Springs, Mualani, the owner of a watersports equipment store and a renowned local tour guide, is your ideal companion. Fond of watersports including swimming, surfing, and beach volleyball, this five-star Hydro catalyst wielder can mount her Sharky Surfboard and quickly move across water, liquid Phlogiston, and flat ground. In combat, as Mualani surfs around on her Sharky Surfboard, she can mark enemies in her path and inflict Sharky’s Bites on them, dealing increased Hydro DMG after multiple hits.

Natlan’s three playable characters are able to locate and mark local specialties, which benefits their entire party while interacting with certain harvestable items: Kachina can restore Stamina, Kinich can increase Movement Speed, and Mualani can restore Phlogiston. In version 5.0’s Event Wishes, Mualani and Kachina will debut in the first phase along with Kaedehara Kazuha’s rerun, and Kinich’s debut will come with the Raiden Shogun in the later phase.

Try the Tribal Chronicles

To better unveil the history and heroic tales of each tribe, the Reputation System returns to Natlan through the Tribal Chronicles, a new series of three-act narrative quests for each tribe that weaves together traditions, stories, and people that replaces the Story Quests in Natlan. Visit each tribe’s Obsidian Totem Pole to unlock their Tribal Chronicles, as well as their Bounties and Supply Notices. Completing these Tribal Chronicles not only provides a deeper and immersive understanding of the customs and culture of different tribes but also earns Tribe Reputation EXP and rewards for the corresponding tribe.

traveller in chinese genshin

In addition, World Quests, exciting stories, as well as Archon Quests await you in Natlan with many surprises and rewards. However, we will leave Travelers to explore all this new content at their own pace. The Sacred Flame burns with an incandescent glow, and ignites the hearts of the brave! We look forward to seeing you in-game when Genshin Impact version 5.0 goes live August 28!
