Franchise description [ edit ]

Development began at some point in 1983 when Gunpei Yokoi suggested Yoshio Sakamoto to make a game "focused on giving players a sense of floating through space that also has fighting elements." [1] Two versions were developed around the same time: The arcade version titled VS. Balloon Fight , released in November of 1984, and an NES version simply titled Balloon Fight , released in January of 1985. The game was a critical and financial success, with both the arcade and home console versions each receiving several ports and rereleases to this day.

An official sequel was co-developed by most of the same developers alongside Pax Softnica in 1990 for Game Boy, titled Balloon Kid . Aside from the portable aspect, this game stands out from it's predecessor by having more emphasis on story, with a plot and defined characters in its single-player mode. A notable aspect about this game is that the original Game Boy version was never officially released in Japan. However, Sanrio reskinned the game with the Hello Kitty brand and ported it to Famicom in 1992 titled Hello Kitty World . The game was also fully remade for Game Boy Color and also released exclusively in Japan in 2000 titled Balloon Fight GB .

The brand was resurrected one last time in 2007 with Tingle's Balloon Fight , a slightly modified version of the original Balloon Fight featuring Tingle from The Legend of Zelda franchise, released for the Nintendo DS exclusively to members of Club Nintendo Japan.

The game and brand have been frequently referenced in other Nintendo media, particularly in minigame collections like WarioWare and NES Remix , as well as a full level in Nintendo Land titled "Balloon Trip Breeze."

In Super Smash Bros. Melee [ edit ]

Balloon Fight receives minor recognition in Melee . The anonymous protagonist of the game, the Balloon Fighter, is a collectible trophy in Melee , and the Flipper - an obstacle from Balloon Fight - is a usable item and as well as a trophy. The original background music for Balloon Fight can also be heard in the Icicle Mountain stage as alternate music.

According to Smabura-Ken , the Balloon Fighter was one of several characters considered for inclusion as a playable character to represent the NES era; this role ultimately went to the Ice Climbers .

Item [ edit ]

  • Flipper : An item similar in function to the Bumper that flips around when touched, causing damage and knocking back the target.

Trophies [ edit ]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl [ edit ]

A Balloon Fight reference can be found in Super Smash Bros. Brawl . On the stage Summit , a fish originating from the game appears when the summit of Icicle Mountain slides into the water. The fish is capable of eating any player unfortunate enough to be in the water at the time, dragging them off the screen and taking a life.

Brawl also features a cover of the Balloon Trip music, also appearing on Summit, in My Music .

Stickers [ edit ]

In super smash bros. 4 [ edit ].

The Balloon Fight universe sees a substantial boost in representation in Smash 4 .

Stage ( for Nintendo 3DS only) [ edit ]

  • Balloon Fight Medley : A series of tunes taken from Balloon Fight that plays on the Balloon Fight stage in the 3DS version and the Wrecking Crew stage in the Wii U version.
  • Balloon Trip : A new remix of the Balloon Trip music that plays as an alternate track on the Balloon Fight stage in the 3DS version and on the Duck Hunt stage in the Wii U version.

Masterpiece [ edit ]

  • Balloon Fight

Misc. [ edit ]

  • The Villager uses the headgear from Balloon Fight in his up special move , Balloon Trip . The balloons can be popped individually, and popping both causes the Villager to fall helplessly in a similar fashion to the Balloon Fighter when his own balloons are popped.
  • The title screen appears when the gamepad in Gamer powers on.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate [ edit ]

The Balloon Fight universe returns largely unchanged in Ultimate .

  • The fish returns as a stage hazard on Balloon Fight and the returning Ice Climber stage Summit from Brawl .

Trivia [ edit ].

  • Balloon Fight is one of two universes, the other being Tetris , to have multiple music tracks play on different stages from different universes in the same game, in this case Balloon Fight Medley being played on Wrecking Crew and Balloon Trip being played on Duck Hunt in Smash for Wii U .

Choose from general admission tickets, VIP experiences like a brunch during mass ascension and reserved concert tickets, or even private party packages. Festivalgoers can stay at Hyatt Regency Princeton or The Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village .

Let’s fly

Art has no limits

from 17 february to 9 JUNE Pullman Yards – 225 Rogers St NE, Atlanta, GA 30317

Monumental artworks and international artists have come together to create an extraordinary inflatable experience!

Balloon Museum presents: Let’s Fly at Pullman Yards in Atlanta, an original concept featuring works from the most inflated to the most colorful. Always at the avant-garde, the curatorial team is committed to redefining the way art is experienced by pushing back the boundaries of art installation and the classical interactions we know. Synonymous with freedom, flight and access, the Let’s Fly experience takes spectators on an unprecedented sensory journey. Centered on physical interaction, the presented works offer an escape into a universe of freedom never before imagined. Play, touch and feel your way through atmospheres with Cyril Lancelin with his monumental, immersive and luminous labyrinth, to Rub Kandy and his zany tribe of GINJOS, the bouncing spheres by Motorefisico and delve into a completely new terrain created by Camilla Falsini with her original colorful graphic creations. Submerge yourself in hypnotic visual effects, transitioning from light, colorful worlds exemplified by artists like Michael Shaw and his aerial installation entitled Lava Lamp as well as Sasha Frolova’s intoxicating kaleidoscopic fountain.

For the Let’s Fly exhibition in Atlanta, Filthy Luker invites you to land on an extra-terrestrial planet with their two artworks, Eye Scream and Octopus Attack, while Atelier Sisu joins Balloon Museum for the first time with their grand ethereal bubbles, Evanescent, and Penique Productions make their return with Centipede to take over the space and alter its perception. The idea behind this exhibition is to provide visitors with a unique, made-to-measure experience. Marvel at the graceful bubbles of Italian collective Quiet Ensemble, draw with the help of the ADA sculpture conceived and designed by German-Polish artist Karina Smigla-Bobinski, and admire the Floating Giants by the artist Max Streicher. Plunge into the thousands of black spheres of Hyperstudio collective, listen to the musical respirations of Australian studio Eness’s sculptures and gaze up to the installation of Korean artist MyeongBeom Kim. Reflective environments appear on the path with the work of Tadao Cern and his BB series of minimalist sculptures and the obscure, moving inflatable creature by the artist SpY.

In this exhibition-experience, artworks stimulate our senses through touch, sight and sound. Having fun while discovering transdisciplinary works of art through immersive proposals is the concept of the Balloon Museum. Since 2022, artistic propositions have expanded. Today, inflatable art appears in digital projects, with the Ouchhh collective for example and its Data Art experiments, or with the Sila Sveta collective, inviting visitors into their utopian worlds through animated pop images. Founded in 2020, Balloon Museum is an exhibition born in Rome, Italy. Winner of the prestigious 2022 BEA Best Proprietary Format award, for several years it has been developing programming focused on inflatable art, an artistic movement that emerged in the mid-20th century and is driven by collectives of architects, artists and designers.

For Let’s Fly in Atlanta, the artists selected belong to the new generation of this movement. These artists are aware of the need to renew exhibition formats, and are constantly seeking to push the limits of this material, which can be transformed at will. In addition, you’ll discover a space devoted to the history of inflatables, from the first experiments by the Montgolfier brothers in the 18th century to the famous Balloon Dog series by American artist Jeff Koons.

Space Perspective unveils mothership boat for stratospheric balloon trips

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission.

Space Perspective has announced the completion of its new "marine spaceport" where its stratospheric balloons will take intrepid tourists to the edge of space.

The vessel, Marine Spaceport (MS) Voyager (named in commemoration of Voyager 1 interstellar probe mission), took two years to build. Space Perspective says it is the first-ever spaceport that will be on open water versus a traditional land-based launch facility, and will be located on the Space Coast of Florida.

The massive world-class powerhouse spans 294 feet (90 meters) long and is equipped to both launch and retrieve the spaceflight experience company's SpaceBalloons , pressurized modules that will transport travelers on a six-hour expedition to the edge of space.

"The capability to launch and retrieve the Neptune capsule at sea creates worldwide scalability along with an unprecedented closure of the routine operations safety case," Taber MacCallum, founder and co-CEO of Space Perspective, said in a press release. "We are proud to bring a new spaceflight capability to Port Canaveral and the Space Coast."

The launch system includes a set of rollers that will assist in preparing the balloons for liftoff, moving them around while in the vertical position on the 200-foot (61-meter) deck. This will help minimize the launch footprint versus typical balloon launches by allowing them to take place without the assistance of aircraft carriers.

Space Perspective says the vessel also has extra maneuverability built with four generators and four engines, a Mission Control on its bridge, and support equipment for the capsule that will hang beneath its balloons, Spaceship Neptune , that can be used for both the launch and recovery process.

Following its launch and adventure to space and back, the final phase will be similar to water splashdowns of SpaceX Dragon capsules and originally from the Apollo era. After splashdown, Spaceship Neptune will be stabilized by fast boats and then hoisted up back onto MS Voyager by a 52-foot (16-meter) lifting frame.

Space Perspective says it is the world's first carbon-neutral company providing trips to the edge of space and is working toward making the trip to space more a reality than in the past. The company says their experience was created as a more pleasant way for explorers to experience the wonders of the edge of space without having to complete training or experience weightlessness.

I lost my daughter at Disney World and was terrified. A simple tip helped me find her quickly, and I recommend it to all parents.

  • I've traveled all over the county with my five children, and Disney World stressed me out the most.
  • To keep track of my kids, I tied a balloon to their backpacks, but I still lost one in the crowd.
  • I also recommend families agree on meet-up spots in the parks.

My husband and I have traveled with our five kids countless times across the US, Canada, and Newfoundland. We have camped in national parks and visited amusement parks .

Although family vacations should be a break from the stresses of life, some trips were more stressful than others.

Disney World was our most challenging trip. There was so much to grab our attention: huge crowds of people and characters everywhere. I tried not to focus on how easy it was for little kids to be swept away in crowds. Instead, I tried to plan for any scenario.

It was January when we visited Disney World in Florida. My kids — ages 5 to 11 — wore their school backpacks to carry autograph books for characters, pens, water bottles, trinkets they purchased, and raincoats in case of rain.

But a simple trick helped me when I lost my child at Disney for a few seconds.

Balloons helped me spot my lost daughter

Each day, I allowed our kids to choose a colorful balloon at the park gate. Then, I tied those balloons to their backpack straps.

Instinctively, I counted balloons all day. Each time we went into a restaurant, rode the monorail, watched the parades, or waited in line for rides, I looked out for those balloons to keep track of my kids .

The children held the balloons down while we watched events. I held the backpacks while the kids and my husband enjoyed the rides.

One day, as we left the monorail in another noisy swarm of people, I counted balloons: five. Everyone got off. We gathered our coats, camera, and collapsed double stroller and left the platform, heading up the swift escalator.

Then, for some reason, I decided to count balloons again. One, two, three, four! My heart stopped.

Just as we do when we hike in nature, my husband was in front of the line of kids, and I was in the back. Frantically, I looked at my balloons and found one of the twins missing.

Above the din of music and conversations, I shouted to my husband. Turning around on the escalator, I spied a balloon still on the platform in the throng of people.

I screamed my child's name as I fought my way through the people jammed on the escalator, attempting to race down the up escalator.

I continued to scream, pushing and shoving people out of my way to get to the platform before my little girl got swept onto the next train by the crowd.

People gave way, and a train had come by this time. As I raced toward my daughter, a lady had cleared people away from a ballooned little girl who was crying so that I could reach her in time.

I think the balloon really saved the day on that one.

There's so much more you can do to keep kids safe at Disney

It's terrifying to lose track of a child in a crowded place. Holding hands or placing the youngest children in a stroller in jam-packed places can help keep them safe. A family can also create colorful and unique shirts to wear.

Take photos of your young kids to show characters if your kid should wander away. Tell your children to go to the characters if they become lost. The characters are connected to security.

Organize a specific place to meet if you get separated: inside the Main Street Bakery, perhaps — but definitely not in front of Cinderella's Castle because there are too many people. For kids with phones, take a photo of the place to meet. The child can approach a character or security and ask how to get there.

Small, portable GPS tracker devices are available now. Put them in a small, zippered pouch on a lanyard around your child's neck or in their backpack.

But to spot little kids quickly in a crowd, I highly recommend the balloon trick. It saved me from losing my kid, so I swear by it.

Amusement parks and crowded vacation destinations don't need to be stressful for parents. As long as we plan to keep track of our kids, we can remain sane, and our children can remain safe.

For me, I will be forever grateful for balloons.

A balloon, a brief flicker of power, then disruption of water service for thousands in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A small balloon striking a utility line near a New Orleans drinking water plant caused only a brief power outage but was followed by a drop in water pressure, a serious injury to a worker trying to restart water pumps, and a boil water advisory for most of the city that is expected to last until Thursday afternoon.

The outage Tuesday night and the unusual circumstances that followed pointed to both the vulnerability of New Orleans’ infrastructure — including the system that provides drinking water and street drainage — and the recurring problem of Mylar balloons striking power lines.

Entergy New Orleans, which provides electricity in the city, said in a statement that a Mylar balloon caused a “flicker” of low voltage Tuesday night at the water treatment plant that serves most of New Orleans. But it caused four pumps at the station to trip off, according to the executive director of the city’s Sewerage and Water Board.

Water flowing from huge tanks at the plant provided pressure for a time, Ghassan Korban, told reporters at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. And under normal circumstances, the pumps would have been restored to service in plenty of time to avoid a pressure drop.

But one of the Sewerage and Water Board employees tasked with restoring the pumps suffered an unspecified, “significant” injury, Korban said. He gave no details, but said fellow employees had to tend to their injured coworker while summoning medical help. That led to a delay in restoring the pumps, and a drop in water pressure.

Low pressure can result in bacteria entering the water system, officials said. So, as a precaution, water system customers are advised to boil water before consuming or cooking with it until tests can be completed. The advisory covered most of the city, which has a population of nearly 370,000.

Korban said completion of the tanks at the water plant has helped alleviate the need for frequent boil water advisories that plagued the city several years ago. And he said his agency is working on a power complex for the city’s street drainage system to reduce the dependence on the Entergy system, and is seeking funding to tie that complex into the drinking water system.
