The beautiful Auroville, also known as the city of dawn (established on 28th Feb 1968, under the full encouragement of UNESCO) is a universal township in the making for a population of about 50,000 people who reside there coming from all over the world.

Located 10 Kms north of Pondicherry, the concept of Auroville was conceived by Mirra Alfassa in collaboration with Sri Aurobindo as a research into the ideal of human unity and to attain a level of higher consciousness, called the Supermind or Supramental.

Architected and designed by Roger Anger, during inauguration almost 5000 people gathered at the centre of this future township and representatives of 124 nations and all the Indian states brought a handful of their soil and placed it in a marble clad structure in the form of a symbolic lotus bud. This rests at the centre of the amphitheatre marking the “humanity in unity” concept. The Aurovillian population is constantly growing and currently stands at 2,500.

The moment you enter Auroville, its energy and the positive vibes are quite palpable. It is not a place just to “see” but to breathe and live. People ditch the lives they have lived and come and live the lives they have always wanted.

Anyone can go and stay for as long as you like, as long as you contribute towards its vision. Don’t forget to visit the Matrimandir which lies at the heart of Auroville and remember to do prior booking for visitations. Book Now :  Pondicherry Tour Packages From Mangalore

Things to Keep in Mind

Things to carry.

Things to Carry

Any travel aficionado would know how to pack and what to carry while making a trip to Pondicherry. However, there are times when the plans go awry and your checklists are not ticked off when it is time to head out. So, while, for novice travellers, a checklist is a must and a handy tool, it doesn’t fail to do the same even if you are a travel expert.

While you may carry the essentials and the basic necessities to survive a holiday here are a few reminders that come in handy while traveling.

- Make sure that you travel light and carry summer wear. Unless you are traveling during off season, then you should pack in a light jacket for the nippy night times and early cool mornings.

- If you plan on vegetating in  the beaches or biking through the roads during daytime, then carry a couple of swim wear and pack in a beach hat or a visor, and sunscreen lotions.

- Carry an umbrella to be ready for errant rains or make sure your hotel will provide you one when you visit. Call in advance for weather forecast and other travel tips.

- Don’t forget to pack in a mosquito repellent, especially for evening to late night visits to Auroville or while strolling in the expanse of nature. Some of the restaurants also have outside seating making it bug and mosquito friendly. It is always better to be prepared to give you the much-needed relief.

- If you have plans to explore some French fine dining then do pack a casual appropriate clothing for the same.

- Make sure you carry your driving license in case you plan to bike your way or rent a car to go in and around Pondicherry. There are tons of attractions that are quite close to each other and although walking to some of them is feasible, a few of them are some distance away and biking your way through the French colonial buildings in Pondy doesn’t seem like such a bad fair. The beautiful rustic lanes and the French designs catches your eyes and makes one drive slowly around to soak it all in.

- Pack some coolers to carry your drinks and food. The heat can beat down and a chilled drink along the way doesn’t make for a bad addition to the journey.

- Remember to check with your local friends or authorities as to what are the regulations for carrying liquor (if you plan on it) into the city and outside of it. Most people making road trips like to carry alcohol with them, sometimes the police patrols in the border are very strict and do regular checks. Please ensure that you don’t fall prey and are well informed. Or else there goes some part of your holiday.

- Carry your portable chargers, well charged in advance from home in case of emergencies. No one wants to end up in the middle of nowhere with no batteries left on their phones to call for an emergency.

- Once you are all stocked up, make sure to smile and laugh a lot and to enjoy the peace and carry the tranquillity in your hearts while visiting the beautiful quaint city of Pondy.

Travel Tips For Pondicherry Trip From Bangalore

Travel Tips For Pondicherry Trip From Bangalore

- There are a few interesting places to consider stopping by while you plan your road trip from Bangalore to Pondicherry and if you are comfortable on time. If you take the shorter route via Thiruvanamalai, you might want to stop by and visit the Gingee fort which is surrounded by hills. If you take the longer but more comfortable route via Vellore, you might want to consider taking a detour after Vellore to visit the UNESCO heritage site of Mahabalipuram, famous for its temples, arts and crafts.

- While there are quite a few petrol/diesel stations along both routes, it is advisable to plan bio breaks to coincide with food breaks at places such as Cafe Coffee Day, McDonalds, Dominos’, Pizza Hut etc. which you can conveniently find on highways.

- There are several toll roads along the route and it is advisable to keep loose change while making these payments. The highways are good but be prepared to see potholes and poor road conditions intermittently.

- Needless to say, most road trips including this one should be accompanied with Google Maps and driving directions as these can make all the difference towards a happy and safe trip. Be aware to marry both the google maps and the physical map to get the optimum travel distance via road. Sometimes google has a way of taking you through a much longer route. The one positive that you can take away from that, in case you do get stuck in the longer route, is to enjoy the beautiful scenic view.

- Due to the relatively limited number of train options from Bangalore to Pondicherry, it is advisable to book train tickets as early in advance as possible.

- If your travel plans include train/bus/airfare while traveling and includes staying at hotels and resorts at your destination, and you do not have the luxury of time at hand then the best thing to do it get yourself one of those Bangalore to Pondicherry packages from the travel agencies giving you the best deals possible. Not only do they make an itinerary for you to follow but everything else gets taken care of for you. Your local travel, your entry fees to the attractions and the must to do items also gets checked off.

- The most important thing that we take for granted while trying to give ourselves this gift of travel is that we forget to relax and be happy. Smile in anticipation of what this journey might mean to you. The trip to Pondicherry may not be a once in a life time opportunity for you, but the memories you make are definitely going to be a lifelong one. Happy Travels.

Aurobindo Ashram or the Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual group (ashram) situated in the union territory of Pondicherry. The ashram was a small community that expanded over some time as more and more disciples of Aurobindo Ghose gathered around to seek spirituality. Aurobindo Ghose founded this ashram after he left his political career and aspired to inherit spiritualism in his life. A few followers of Aurobindo joined him in the ashram with the same aim of seeking spirituality. Located in eastern Pondicherry, Sri Aurobindo Ashram has become a hub of tourists who are inclined towards divinity and simplicity in their lifestyle. The ashram is popular not only in India but also in other countries because of the work put forth by the community towards the healing of humanity. The ashram in its initial days only had a few buildings but later, as more and more people joined, the ashram grew bigger and presently, it consists of many small buildings that are adjacent to each other. The ashram provides all the basic needs of its members for living a healthy and simple life. There is a library in the ashram where members can read and learn about the history and teachings of the place. Also, there are various cultural facilities like dance, theatre, music, arts, and sports for the all-round development of the members. The ashram is managed by a board of five trustees who make sure that the legacy and vision of Aurobindo Ghose remains in the ashram.History of Aurobindo Ashram:After quitting politics, Aurobindo Ghose spent most of his time writing and meditating in the ashram. From 1910 to 1920, the ashram had a few members alongside Aurobindo who all lived a simple life involving reading, writing and doing their daily chores. In 1920, Mirra Alfassa or “The Mother” who was regarded as the “spiritual collaborator” of Aurobindo returned to Pondicherry and lived in the ashram. Soon, more and more people came in the ashram and it gradually became a community under the umbrella of Aurobindo and the Mother. In 1926, the formal foundation of the ashram was done and this resulted in more and more people coming to the ashram. From just 24 people in 1927 to 150 in 1934, the ashram started to grow like a community. Over the years, as the ashram grew in numbers more and more departments were formed and the sadhaks looked after the departments as a part of their sadhana. Today, the ashram is spread throughout the town in around 400 buildings and houses more than 2000 sadhaks. Highlights of Aurobindo Ashram:-Aurobindo Ghose founded the ashram in 1926 after quitting his career in politics -Mother (Mirra Alfassa) companion of Aurobindo carried on the legacy of the ashram after Aurobindo’s death in 1950.-One of the biggest Ashrams in India, Aurobindo Ashram housing more than 2000 people living and serving each other. -Auroville, the city of dawn was the brainchild of Mother. Unfortunately, this beach is not open for taking dips in the sea or any water sport activities, but many visit the place during sunrise and sunset for walking, jogging or taking a stroll. The beach is clustered with tetrapods along the coastline, while a concrete pathway has been constructed which is flanked with cafes, restaurants and pubs. These restaurants serve various cuisines including French, Indian, Arabic and Chinese. Some of the places have live band performances that attract many tourists. The restaurants and pubs do not allow any customers after midnight and shut down before 1:00 AM.Apart from restaurants, there are shopping boutiques that sell textile materials, home décor and souvenirs for you to take home. The various hotels built around the beach provide several stay-at options for foreigners and local travellers. There are no vehicles allowed on the concrete and paved path, but there is a parking space provided at the entrance where you can give a fee of NR 5 and let the watchman take care of your vehicle. One may encounter various hawkers and vendors selling balloons, neon bands and tiaras whose presence may be vexing. The beach is not as crowded on weekdays as it is on weekends.

Raj Niwas

The Raj Niwas building is constructed on the foundation of a hotel named Hotel De La Compagnie. This is the government house of the Pondicherry and is a blend of both Indian and French architecture. The previous name of this Raj Niwas is Palais du Government. The Raj Niwas isn’t open to public but it is one of the attractions in Pondicherry. The list of places lying between Bangalore and Pondicherry is endless. However, in order to explore all of them, you’ll have to take multiple road trips since not all of them lie in the same direction. One of the best ways to accomplish this by taking different routes to and fro on your journey between Bangalore and Pondicherry.

If I were to start mentioning all the beautiful and worth visiting places that lie between Bangalore and Pondicherry, the following locales would complete my list –

Before venturing to Pondicherry from Bangalore, I could have never imagined that so many underrated but beautiful places can be explored in this region. Now after taking multiple trips, each time with a different route, I not only enjoy my trips here but also try my best to encourage passionate travellers to explore the locales around here.

One of the nearest weekend getaways from Bangalore, Hosur is a mini industrial hub. But comprises various beautiful temples that should surely be visited by travellers from all over.

Krishnagiri

Krishnagiri has the perfect mix of dams, temples, forts and various places of cultural value. Places like Krishnagiri are a living reminder of the rich heritage of places down south.

A small travel town that can easily be covered in a few hours at least for people in a hurry. A lot of decent Biryani selling eateries lie around Arcot.

Cheyyar is a region that is often overlooked by most travellers. But I highly insist that you stop by here and explore the locales around, especially the heritage temples.

Just like Cheyyar, Vandavasi too gets overlooked by most travellers. This is unfortunate because these small locales have so much to add when it comes to a good travel experience.

Lying in the state of Tamil Nadu, Tindivandam boasts of mighty temples and heritage places all around it. In fact, the locals here are quite enthusiastic to help travellers in exploration.

Vaniyambadi

A place that takes pride in religion is Vaniyambadi. The entire locale is a mix of temples and mosques for visitors to see. In case you have time, do visit the nearby hill towns as well.

Heard of the world famous Ambur Biryani? Well, it finds its origins in the mighty town of Ambur. Hence, the name. I visited here just for the Biryani but you can explore it around as well.

Hoskote lies so close to Bangalore that most travellers visit it as a weekend getaway and not en route from Bangalore to Pondicherry. However, you can surely visit while travelling to the coastal region of Pondicherry.

I’m sure you must have at some point in life heard about Kolar. If you’re in Kolar, you have got to visit the Gold Mines for sure. Additionally, visit the temples around here.

A lot of small remote villages lie in and around Mulbagal and make for terrific offbeat locales. If you share my love of offbeat places, do stop by here even if it’s for a few hours.

Try visiting the pretty waterfalls in and around Palamaner especially if you’re travelling towards Pondicherry from Bangalore on a hot sunny day.

Chittoor is one of the best locales to stop by on the way to Pondicherry from Bangalore. It has everything – waterfalls, heritage places and sumptuous eateries.

You can possibly not miss out on the metropolitan city of Chennai if you’re travelling to Pondicherry. In fact, I insist take a slight detour and staying here for at least 2 nights. Explore Chennai’s food, beaches, parks and museums.

Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram lies at a duration of just 1.5 hours from Pondicherry and is a must visit travel halt. Check out Krishna’s Ball, Lighthouse, the nearby beach, Shore Temple and Rathas here.

Auroville lies just a 20 minute duration from Pondicherry and is a township of its own kind. Citizens from more than 90 countries stay here and believe in Matri or Mother Nature with all their hearts.

The places to see between Bangalore and Pondicherry will depend on the route you take. Also, on the time you decide to invest in your trip. It will not be possible for you to cover all the places via the same route. Pondicherry Trip

Photo of Piyush Aggarwal

Its been a while since I was planning to start blogging ,finally here I am writing my first blog.I am a really passionate travel photographer and I am extremely lucky to have close friends with same passion.Through this blog post I want to share few of the recent exhilarating experiences which our group experienced on some of our weekend road trips around Bangalore . Before I begin with our first journey just a few insights of our group and the type of journeys we like to PLAN. Well I've highlighted PLAN because there is none as such,we are a group of spontaneous travelers who just pick a destination and ride without thinking too much about the so called "Places to see in....Thing to do....". We just love to unwrap the gifts that day has to offer us.

Well I begin my first blog with our first bike ride from Bangalore to Pondicherry . We were three friends who started the solo journey on our bikes. One of our friend was to join us in Pondy from Chennai . It was my first significant ride as I was fairly new to bike rides. The distance between Bangalore to Pondy is around 300 km,but we planned to reach Pondy via Vellore and that added extra 60kms to our ride. We started early in the morning estimating to reach Pondy by late evening. Day 1: Our ride till Krishnagiri was fairly smooth and things were going as per plan, just when heavens opened up and our so called PLAN went for a toss. I forgot to mention about the new camera which I just bought the previous night of our journey. I PLANNED to capture the moments all along the ride but mother nature had some other PLANS. The sky looked dark and gloomy as far as we could see but we were hoping against hope that its just a passing shower and things would brighten up after a few kms. But our hopes soon faded away as our friend who was supposed to meet us in Pondy told us that western coast was hit by a storm and its raining all around. But against all odds we decided to continue our journey....

We were completely unaware of the route via Vellore and rain barred us from using google maps. So finally we decided to do this the old school way, asking for direction from people. That turned out to be some experience as we didn't know Tamil and were picking only few key words from the whole conversation.Eventually we ended up taking an even longer route through some villages but finally managed to get back on track.

Finally after a day full of struggle fighting strong winds and heavy rainfall, we managed to reach a place within close vicinity of Pondy called Tindivaram. By this time our friend from Chennai had already reached Pondy and had plenty of time to explore the places. With a heavy heart and expecting a miracle we called him to know about the weather in Pondy and to our great surprise we found out that Pondy had extremely pleasant weather. Above is our stay in Pondy just opposite to the beach.Drenched completely we headed straight to the hotel and got freshened up and came down to the beach to finally have some good time after a long hard day. Enjoying chilled beer with grilled fish and chicken and cool sea water splashing our faces with every breeze passing by, we almost forgot the torrid time before reaching Pondy. After stuffing ourselves with food and beer, we decided to take a walk along the beach back to our hotel along with few beer bottles for the night. After reaching the hotel we headed straight to the terrace and enjoyed the mesmerizing ocean view . All of us were in subconscious state by now,we just kept quite and listened to the roars of ocean waves. Suddenly we realized that very day was the day when the batting maestro SACHIN TENDULKAR retired from international cricket ,all of a sudden that feeling of joy was overtaken by emotions remembering all those years watching him play. It was close to 3 in the night, I passed out on the terrace listening to his retirement speech and discussing the greatness of the man. Day 2: Thanking rain Gods for the clear day,we moved on for brunch @ Le cafe . We have heard a lot of good things about this place and always wanted to eat there once. Its building reportedly belonged to the port authority during the European rule.People prefer sitting on the stone benches to listen to the mellifluous fusion of wind chimes and gurgling waves. Cheese omellete is a must have along with Croissant. Hence after consulting few localites,we headed towards Paradise Beach. The ride from Pondy Beach to Paradise beach is around 15km. After walking for a while we reached a point where the backwaters make love with the Bay of Bengal.Shacks here serve beer and the sun is ablaze, but the thatched-roof resting ensures you don't need sunscreen. It was almost sunset when we left Paradise beach and headed straight to Auroville. While wandering along in Auroville I noticed a cool food place called Tantos where most of the crowd seemed to be chilling out.I at once decided this is the place where we are heading for dinner. While enjoying the food suddenly one of our friend suggested to leave of Chennai instead of staying in Auroville. It was around 10 in the night by this time, he suggested to leave by 12 so that the traffic reduces on ECR (East Coast Road) and we can enjoy our ride to Chennai. Rules of the game are simple, one by one we all had to pick a direction whenever we had an option of going in either direction. Person going ahead has to pick a direction and all had to follow without questioning. Once a person is done with his choice another person takes over and chooses a direction. This was some experience as we were completely unaware of the terrain and directions inside Auroville. But at once we all were involved in it and we ended up covering around 40kms.

The distance between Pondy to Chennai is about 150km and we were in no hurry whatsoever as we had the whole night ahead of us. Riding our bikes along the coast at night took biking to a different level which I had never experienced before. All of us had already agreed to explore and spend some time on the not so common beaches if we found any on our way. To our great surprise as if God was granting our wishes one by one and writing the script of this trip, we found a sign board signalling Doctor's Beach project to our right. Our eyes lit up as soon as we saw the sign board and without any further delay we headed in that direction. After traveling few kms we found a building being constructed as Doctor's Beach project with no sign of any beach nearby. We all laughed at ourselves but decided to travel a bit more ahead with a hope to find a beach somewhere ahead down the road. We sat there for hours listening the gurgling sea waves splashing against the shore. It was a moon lit night which made the sea waves rise to alarming proportions. We noticed numerous crabs on the shore shining brightly in the moon light. It was 5 in the morning when we reached our friends place in Chennai but strangely enough none of us looked tired. With immense satisfaction we discussed about the eventful , thrilling and a memorable day we just experienced and passed out for the night. There isn't much to look forward to on Chennai - Bangalore highway, hence we kept riding continuously for large intervals of time.As a result of this we were able to cover a significant distance within the next few hours. However when the sun was about to set the evening grew very beautiful,so we decided to stop for a while to relax. Refreshed again after relaxing for a while,we continued our journey towards Bangalore.

By 10:30 we were on electronic city flyover. This was much earlier than our expectations,so stopped there for a while. After half an hour we left for our place and this marked the end of this mercurial experience. Next morning we all met once again in the office and told about our trip to our friends. Its was almost a week since we returned from Pondy but we still had the hangover of that trip.Every evening after office we used to gather and relived the memories once again.

Please visit Click-Art , my Facebook page to view my travel clicks around South India over the years. Looking forward for your feedback.

It was 8 in the evening already.Tindivaram is around 35kms from Pondy and as if the day hasn't been hard enough already, we were welcomed by the heaviest rainfall which we encountered throughout the day.Believe me it was terrible thing to experience after a full day of struggle.

Pondicherry

On our way back we sat on the beach to enjoy the sea waves at night but soon we were made to realize the difference between Pondy and Goa by the cops who asked us to leave for our hotels and in the process kept the beer bottles which we were carrying.

Paradise Beach

Paradise beach is one of the majestic beaches of Pondy. Its glittering white sand and blue waters are mesmerizing. It's a perfect blend of nature and peacefulness. The view is completely engrossing and leaves you speechless. The amazing nature is best way to ward off the heat, chill in the mighty waves and relax. Once we reached there we took a long walk on the sandy beach and captured few memorable clicks.

Auroville is a city dedicated to human unity based on the visions of Sri Aurobindo. It was exactly on the opposite end of Pondy and by the time we reached there it was completely dark. Our PLAN was to roam about for a while in the city just to get the feel of Auroville and find a guest house to stay for the night. Auroville wears a strange deserted look at night.

Photo of Auroville, Bommayapalayam, Pondicherry, India by Piyush Aggarwal

By the end of this game we realized that to enjoy your time to the fullest "Pagalpanti bhi zaruri hai yaar". There was a look of contentment on our faces. While leaving Bangalore we never PLANNED of doing all this random stuff and creating memories to cherish for lifetime. But I guess this is what spontaneous people are all about. Finally it was time for us to leave Pondy and continue our journey towards Chennai. It felt as if it was the beginning of a new trip all together.

Photo of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India by Piyush Aggarwal

With adrenaline rushing through us we overcame every obstacle on our ride ,but I have to say this whole event led us to an extremely beautiful village ride. The weather relented for a while which allowed me to capture few clicks on the way.

A Fun Packed Bangalore To Pondicherry Road Trip

If you think that you are going to see all of India in one holiday you are sorely mistaken. India is vast and it doesn’t come as a surprise that Indian holidays barely cover much of the expanse of the country. We’ve been traveling so much outside the country that we thought it was about time that we planned a few holidays in India.

To kick start our Indian holidays we decided to plan a 5 day Bangalore to Pondicherry road trip. Our starting point was Bangalore (in Karnataka) and it was an epic journey from the beginning to the end.

Bangalore to pondicherry road trip: day 1.

We were supposed to leave Bangalore at 5 am but unfortunately we slept in. By the time we got the car on the road it was 6:30 am. If you live in Bangalore you know why leaving early is imperative. The traffic in the city can get crazy and you want to head out before everyone starts out to office. We caught a bit of traffic on the way but it was not too bad. Thank God! Phew!

PIT STOP 1: It’s Breakfast Time

Road trip TN and Pondicherry crazy drive

The first meal on our Tamil Nadu And Pondicherry Road Trip

One of our favorite things to do when heading out for a road trip is breakfast. So it goes without saying that our Bangalore to Pondicherry road trip started out with a hearty breakfast the moment we crossed the border between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

It was our first meal in Tamil Nadu and I loved it immensely. I even tried Pongal for the first time! It was the perfect start to our Indian Holiday.

PIT STOP 2: Kanchipuram

Kanchipuram temples coloumns

Inside of the temples in Kanchipuram.

Kanchipuram was a great place to make our second pit stop on our Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry road trip. The city is famous for its Kajeevaram sarees and we got to see the actual loom that is used to make them. The city is also a famous temple city in India.

In fact it is a popular destination for those Indian holidays where people want to perform a pilgrimage. The number of temples in Kanchipuram really surprised us. We even got a guide who showed us around and told us about the history of the temples in the city.

One my favorite temples here was the Kanchi Kailasanathar temple. It is situated a bit away from the other temples and easy to miss so make sure that you mark it on your map before you start your journey.

FINAL DESTINATION: Mahabalipuram

Places to visit in Mahabalipuram Ganesh Ratha

One of the temples in Mahabalipuram.

We reached Mahabalipuram somewhere in the early hours of the evening. Our accommodation, the Rajalakshmi Guesthouse was fairly easy to find. After asking the staff where to park we found a great spot for ourselves.

After a quick break to freshen up we headed out to explore the city. A lot of restaurants line the streets of the city. We were at a walking distance away from the beach so there were no guesses about where we spent the evening.

Tamil Nadu And Pondicherry Road Trip Day 2

Places to visit in Mahabalipuram Lighthouse

Our second day of our Bangalore to Pondicherry road trip was spent solely in Mahabalipuram . Our day started at 5:30 am with us watching the sunrise. The view was made even better because of the spectacle that the Shore temple made in front of us. It was peaceful and I couldn’t help but think that this was what great Indian holidays should be made off.

The rest of the day was spent visiting the museums and other archeological sites in the city. We drove around since I was ill but a lot of it can be done on foot.

It is a really nice place to spend a couple of days if you want a quiet place to destress at. Even the accommodation is a mix of luxury and budget so you can take a pick depending on what suits your particular budget.

I honestly will probably head back here at sometime in life not just because I did not see it enough to satisfy my curiosity but also because I genuinely enjoyed the vibe here.

Bangalore To Pondicherry Road Trip Day 3

Road trip TN and Pondicherry the ride

We left Mahabalipuram at around 10 am after a nice heavy breakfast. With just about 100 kilometers to go, we weren’t too worried about the time. Our final destination was Pondicherry but we made a couple of interesting pit stops on the way. I think those pit stops added a lot of flavor to the journey. It definitely made me rank this particular trip as one of our best Indian holidays.

PIT STOP 1 : Marakkanam

Road trip TN and Pondicherry salt fields

The salt fields in Marakkanam.

Marakkanam was a small town that we passed through as we drove towards Pondicherry. A friend had mentioned that the town was famous for its salt fields. Since we were in the area we had to get down and take a look. It was fun to see the birds swooping around and it was great break too.

PIT STOP 2: Auroville

Auroville Plan

Auroville certainly is a place to calm down and reflect.

Auroville is an almost self sustaining city that is around 15 kilometers away from Pondicherry. It was however directly on the path that we had marked for our Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry road trip. We had plenty of time so we stopped and spent some time in the city.

Auroville strongly believes in unity and equality. The people living in this unique city hail from all over the world. After our visit to the Matrimandir we had a spot of lunch before leaving.

I always recommend Auroville as a pitstop because it is interesting. There is a sense of oneness that you will find here that is refreshing to say the least. It also has some amazing food in their canteen so don’t miss that either!

PIT STOP 3: Serenity Beach

Things to do in Pondicherry

A pit stop at Serenity beach.

Like I said before, the pit stops along the way added a lot of flavor to our Bangalore to Pondicherry road trip. As we were heading towards Pondicherry we noticed Serenity beach on the way. Curious we decided to stop and we were so glad that we did.

The beach was not very crowded and relatively clean. We spent a little while listening to the lapping of the waves before we reluctantly decided that it was time to head on our way.

FINAL DESTINATION: Pondicherry

Things to do in Pondicherry Beach

Many people will tell you that chilling at the beach is what Pondicherry is all about. That and good food!

We reached Pondicherry somewhere in the evening. The little French city was relatively quiet when considered to other Indian cities. We found our accommodation at the Aadhaar guest house easily enough. We did have a bit of trouble figuring out the parking space initially but that was soon sorted. The guest house was perfect because it was just what we needed to kick back and relax.

We spent the evening wandering through the streets of Pondicherry and savoring the French deserts. It was an interesting experience. We headed back to the Aadhaar guest house in order to sleep off the journey. We still had one more day to experience Pondicherry.

Bangalore To Pondicherry Road Trip Day 4

Things to do in Pondicherry Sunday market

Our day in Pondicherry was pretty relaxed. It was one of those Indian holidays that we were dreaming off. We wandered around on the beach, enjoyed snacks at the boutique French cafes and took in the scenery. We even made time to go out for a nice romantic dinner. The peaceful day certainly gave us enough time to recuperate for our trip back to Bangalore the next day.

One would think that the trip back would be quick but as always we knew that we would stop along the way to see more things. I mean, why waste a day in just driving right. That was one of the reasons why we loved our slow paced day in the city. It gave us a feel of the heart of Pondicherry and an experience that we would cherish. Plus, I was still recuperating and the slow pace was what I needed.

Bangalore To Pondicherry Road Trip Day 5

A view from the top of Gingee fort which includes the hills in the background and the houses in the foreground. This was one of our stops during our Bangalore to Pondicherry road trip.

Our Bangalore to Pondicherry road trip was filled with some gorgeous views like this one!

We left Pondicherry at around 7 am. We were a little delayed because we had to clear our bill and then fill up on fuel. Just as we were leaving the heavens also decided to open up and shower us with their choicest blessings.

Now one may be tempted to think that this would ruin an Indian holiday but it didn’t. We managed to outpace the storm and left it far behind.

PIT STOP 1: Gingee Fort

The stone steps flanked with boulders that lead up to the Gingee fort which was one of our stops during our Bangalore to Pondicherry road trip

The walk up to a part of the Gingee Fort.

Ever looked at the map and instantly decided that you wanted to stop because something looked exciting? That’s exactly what happened to us when we passing by the Gingee fort . We thought we would step out and have a look but we landed up getting so tempted that we climbed up one of the hills that the fort is based out off. Mind you there are three in total!

Climbing this fort isn’t hard. It has steps and it is extremely easy to get to the top. You’ll see people in all forms of attires heading to the top. Plus there are some great places along the way to sit and catch your breath if required.

PIT STOP 2: Tiruvannamalai

Road trip TN and Pondicherry chai break

Meals on the road are always good!

Let me be honest with you. I had never heard of Tiruvannamalai before. Google maps directed us through it on the last day of our Bangalore to Pondicherry road trip. We wouldn’t have paid much attention to the town if it wasn’t for the angry growls that our stomachs were giving.

It turned out that Tiruvannamalai is an excellent place for people who love to trek. There is a huge temple (we didn’t have time to visit it) that is noteworthy in the center of the city.

We had lunch which was an unlimited vegetarian thali for just Rs. 60/-. That is less than a dollar and boy was it delicious. We also caught a cup of tea and cookies at a German bakery because we just couldn’t help ourselves!

PIT STOP 3: Time For Tea

While we were pretty comfortable and had already drunk our share of tea, we couldn’t resist stopping on the way. There were quaint little stalls along the highway that sold cups of tea and coffee to tired travelers like us. It was just a stop for around 5 minutes but it was fun.

FINAL DESTINATION: Bangalore

We hit traffic as we entered Bangalore which was rather unfortunate. That meant that getting into the city was tiring but that is something that everyone who lives in Bangalore usually accounts for. It can’t be helped unless you are really lucky. That however is life.

Our Bangalore To Pondicherry road trip was definitely ranked as one of our best Indian holidays. We came back home feeling relaxed and happy. Getting out of the city into green lands of the country was definitely blissful. We need to do it more often. Who knows where our next destination will be!

Bangalore To Pondicherry Road Trip FAQ

How much is the train from bangalore to pondicherry.

The train from Bangalore to Pondicherry is the 11005 Puducherry Exp that leaves Bangalore Yeshwantpur Station at 21:40. The ticket costs approximately 150 rupees. The issue is that this train takes 9 and a half hours to reach so it is a pretty long journey despite the relatively short distance.

How Is Bangalore To Pondicherry By Road?

Depending on which part of Bangalore you leave from (because of the insane traffic in the city) the tome that it takes to reach Pondicherry can take anywhere between 5-7 hours. We stayed in Whitefield and managed to hit the city border in around 5 hours but then got stuck coming in which is not a wonder.

Is Pondicherry Worth Visiting?

I would highly recommend visiting Pondicherry. The vibe of the place is so different from many of the Indian cities. You can also see remnants of the French colonial rule here. It has a rich history and some amazing food too!

Wow, that was really a nice trip. Thank you so much for sharing.

Saturday 27th of January 2018

Even a region of India can't really be covered in one trip, let alone the country! I often hesitate to say I've 'been to India' because I recall Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh are soooo different.

P.S. The temple in Kanchipuram looks impressive! Malaysian Hindus often go on pilgrimage holidays back to India. I'm beginning to get it.

Sunday 28th of January 2018

I haven't been to Uttar Pradesh but I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes within one state itself you will variations as you move from spot to spot. I did not know that India was a pilgrimage destination of Malaysian Hindus but like you I can see why. I often get temple fatigue if I do too many temples together. Kanchipuram however was so beautiful and so impressive I could have stayed for hours longer.

Great piece Penny! I had no idea there was so much variety to see in India but wow its stunning! I dont know why but i always forget India has some amazing beaches. Thanks for the inspiration for when i finally make it there!

I cannot imagine India without the beaches but that is largely because my whole family has lived in Goa for generations and it is the place I call home. Things have changed but once you learn to look past the chaos in India you can catch the beauty. Let me know when you head to this part of the world. I would love to catch up!

First I came to know about Kanchipuram from Kajeevaram saree but never visited this destination. I'll love to explore one day. Loving the photo of this temple. Thank you for sharing :)

The link between the saree and the temple was a new concept even for me!!

Wow, that is an interesting detail of the trip you shared... Thank you.

Safety Measures

  • The Tiruvannamalai route is the shortest, but not in ideal conditions, owing to traffic and intermittent bad patches. The best option if you want to spend less time enroute and more time in Pondicherry.
  • On the Vellore route, the conditions up until Arcot are excellent to drive on, except the wait at toll booths.
  • Even past Arcot, roads are pretty much manageable though may be narrower.
  • The Chittoor route is also good to drive on, except the roads may get narrower approaching Ranipet. Overspeeding is not a good idea.
  • Eateries abound on all routes, including highway joints with snacks and authentic cuisines.
  • Hoskote, Krishnagiri, Hosur are a good place for a short refreshment break.
  • Be sure to follow Google Maps or a routeing app to make your trip more convenient and safe.

Whether you travel by bike or car, all roads leading to Pondicherry promise an exciting journey with spectacular stops to blow your mind. So pack up your bags, get your engines roaring and set off on a road trip to remember.

Based on the weather forecast at that time, we may have to cancel a trip or two in those months.
  • June to Aug: Monsoon months are a good time to visit Pondicherry for a leisurely trip. But getting in the Sea would be risky because of the high tide.

11 Best Weekend Getaways From Bangalore, India

O nce a retirement village for the wealthy, known for its year-round spring weather and peaceful ambience, Bangalore (Bengaluru) today has transformed into the Silicon Valley of India. If you live in Bangalore or are visiting Bangalore for work, the best way to rewind after a hectic work-week is to travel away from the bustle of the city.

Good news is that there’s no dearth of weekend getaways from Bangalore. History, UNESCO heritage sites, mountains, wildlife and beaches – name it and you can have it all within a 350 km radius of the city. It’s easy to be spoilt for choices. So based on my personal experience I have selected the top 11 places to visit with kids and family during the weekends.

1. Mysore (145 km from Bangalore)

Just a scenic drive away from Bangalore lies the majestic city of Mysore. Renowned for its grand palaces, vibrant markets, and rich cultural heritage, Mysore offers a delightful blend of history and charm.

You can visit Mysore even on an exhaustive day trip from Bangalore, but I highly recommend slowing down with your family in this lovely city.

Explore the opulent Mysore Palace, followed by the art gallery, Mysore wax museum and a trip to the cinematic Vrindavan gardens in the evening.

On the next day stroll through the bustling Devaraja Market, and visit Chamundi Hills to seek blessings at the Chamundi temple or simply enjoy the views.

If you are visiting with kids, don’t miss out on the Mysore Zoo – one of the best zoological parks in India.

2. Yercaud (215 km from Bangalore)

Yercaud in the local language Tamil means a land round the lake. And that’s what it is – a charming hill station in the Eastern ghats around the sparkling Emerald Lake.

Reach Yercaud by driving through the 32-km loop road famous for its scenic viewpoints and hairpin belts. Embark on leisurely nature walks through fragrant spice plantations, take a boat ride on the serene Emeral Lake, also known as the Yercaud lake and spend time with your kids in Anna Park and rose garden.

With its cool climate and pristine landscapes, Yercaud is the perfect weekend getaway from Bangalore for all seasons.

3. Sakleshpur (220 km from Bangalore)

Tucked away in the verdant Western Ghats, Sakleshpur is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Known for its lush coffee plantations, mist-covered hills, and gushing waterfalls, Sakleshpur offers a picturesque backdrop for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

Trek to the historic star-shaped castle – Manjarabad Fort. Unwind amidst the tranquil ambiance of Bisle Ghat, and soak in the beauty of Magajahalli Falls.

With its pristine beauty and tranquil atmosphere, Sakleshpur is the perfect destination for a peaceful weekend escape.

4. Coorg (240 km from Bangalore)

Venture a bit farther from Bangalore, and you’ll discover the enchanting hill station of Coorg, also known as the “Scotland of India.” Famous for its verdant coffee plantations, mist-covered hills, and cascading waterfalls, Coorg offers a serene retreat amidst nature’s bounty.

There are two main towns in Coorg where you can plan your stay – Madikeri and Virajpet. Madikeri is the central point for exploring the historic Madikeri Fort, the majestic Abbey Falls and the Omkareshwar Temple. Kids will enjoy spending time in the landscaped park of Raja’s Seat in the evening.

From Virajpet you can visit the more offbeat places like Talacauvery and Iruppu Falls.A road trip to Coorg from Bangalore will take you through the most scenic roads of Western Ghats. You can also reach Madikeri by overnight bus from Bangalore.

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich history of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Watch the ruins of Vijayanagara empire come back to life infront of your eyes in this open-air museum.

Marvel at the architectural wonders of Hampi Bazaar, climb the iconic Matanga Hill for panoramic views, or witness the breathtaking sunset during a coracle ride in the Tungabhadra River.

On the next day drive to North Hampi to see the iconic stone chariot of Vittala Temple. It is one of the most famous monuments of India that often feature on the currency notes. Climb the Monkey Temple and engage in live music and merriment in the Hippie island.

If you are visiting with kids, skip Hippie island since the environment may not be particularly kid-friendly. Instead travel to Daroji wildlife sanctuary to spot the Indian sloth bear and for bird-watching.

11. Mahabalipuram (350 km from Bangalore)

This is another UNESCO heritage site that records the artistic and engineering genius of the 7 th- century Pallava dynasty of India. Embark on a journey to the historic town of Mahabalipuram, renowned for its magnificent rock-cut temples and sculptures. What’s more, it’s on the shore of the Bay of Bengal!

The magnificent Shore Temple, the intricately carved five monolithic structures called Pancha Rathas, or the bas-relief architectural marvel called Arjuna’s penance – each monument is steeped in glorious history.

With its rich cultural heritage and stunning coastal landscapes, Mahabalipuram offers a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty for a memorable weekend getaway.

To reach Mahabalipuram, take a train or flight to Chennai and then book a short ride to Mahabalipuram. You can also drive all the way to Mahabalipuram from Bangalore.

A Few Tips on Choosing Your Destination

If you are looking for a peaceful retreat to just relax in the lap of nature, book a luxury resort in Coorg or Chikmagalur. Surprisingly these are also the best places for adventure with friends offering trekking trails and whitewater rafting.

If you are looking for an exhaustive sightseeing tour of historic gems go for Hampi or Mahabalipuram. If you are visiting with kids, I highly recommend Yercaud, Ooty, and Pondicherry because your itinerary can be packed with kid-friendly activities.

If you love shopping, then Mysore is a paradise for you, while if you want to go off-the-beaten-track, choose Shimoga.

Opt for the high-altitude hill stations in summer for respite from the rising mercury levels. I recommend Yercaud, Kodaikanal and Ooty.

Monsoon is the best time for the Western Ghats, also known as the monsoon ghats. This is the time to visit places like Chikmagalur, Coorg and Wayanad. The mountains come alive with waterfalls in full force and lush greenery all around.

I recommend planning trips to the beaches like Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram, and Bekal in the winter in India.

That’s a wrap to the post. I am sure you will enjoy these places for your weekend trips from Bangalore.
