Amasra, Turkey on the Black Sea.

It’s not because the Black Sea doesn’t often make it on lists of the world’s top cruise destination that it’s not worth exploring. Rather the opposite, in fact. If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-cruise-route destination for your next cruise vacation, Black Sea cruises are well worth considering.

Located between eastern Europe and western Asia, connected to the Mediterranean Sea by the Bosporus and Dardanelles Straits, the Black Sea is surrounded by a number of different regions. From the beautiful Balkans in the west and the Turkish coast in the south, to the Caucasus region in the west, and Russia and the Ukraine in the north(east), this is a cruise destination that offers tons of variety.

No fewer than six countries have a border on the Black Sea coast: Bulgaria, Romania, the Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and Turkey.

Cruising the Black Sea

City of Sozopol, Bulgaria on the coast of the Black Sea.

While its name might seem dark and perhaps even ominous—some theories say that it goes back to the Ancient Greeks who called it the “Inhospitable Sea”; others mention the sea’s dark algae or deep waters—the Black Sea is actually not dangerous or dreary at all.

Its shores are lined with vibrant coastal towns and cities, while national parks and UNESCO World Heritage Site attract outdoorspeople and history buffs alike. Black Sea cruises allow you to explore this under-the-radar destination in depth, visit its amazing historical attractions, enjoy its stunning scenery and immerse yourself in one of Europe’s least visited regions.

That said, however, there still are numerous fantastic port cities to visit and explore on a cruise in the Black Sea.

Popular Black Sea Cruise Destinations

  • Istanbul, Turkey
  • Amasra, Turkey
  • Bosporus and Dardanelles Straits, Turkey
  • Trabzon, Turkey
  • Batumi, Georgia
  • Sochi, Russia
  • Odessa, Ukraine
  • Constanta, Romania

Cruise Lines That Offer Black Sea Cruises

Nessebar, Bulgaria on the Black Sea.

Below, we’ve listed the cruise lines that offer Black Sea cruises. Nearly all cruises in the Black Sea depart from Mediterranean ports like Athens (Piraeus), Istanbul or even Venice. Some of them might also sail (part of) the Black Sea on longer itineraries in the Mediterranean Sea.

Thanks to their large number of Black Sea cruise itineraries, Azamara is one of the leading cruise lines in the Black Sea. Starting from either Istanbul or Athens (Piraeus), these epic luxury voyages are about 11 or 12 days long and offer amazing experiences and sightseeing opportunities in the top destinations in the western Black Sea, including Odessa, Burgas, Varna and Constanta. Depending on the itinerary you choose, the route will also include stops at iconic places in Greece, Turkey or both.

Another major cruise line offering a Black Sea cruise option is Oceania Cruises. On sailings between Istanbul and Athens (Piraeus), you will visit famous cities like Odessa with its striking Parisian-style architecture in the Ukraine, the ancient Romanian city of Constanta, and UNESCO World Heritage-listed Nessebar in Bulgaria. Black Sea cruises with Oceania also include a crossing of the Bosporus, as well as stops at world-renowned attractions like Ephesus, Santorini and/or Bodrum.

Regent Seven Seas

Offering all-inclusive luxury cruises all over the world, Regent Seven Seas Cruises also has a couple of Black Sea cruises available. This particular cruise line is a great choice if you’d like to visit some more remote or smaller cruise ports on your holiday. They generally also provide several immersive on-shore excursions.

Their Black Sea cruise itineraries take in the western part of the sea, including Odessa, Constanta and Nessebar, as well as Istanbul and the Bosporus and Dardanelles Straits. Additionally, since these Regent Seven Seas cruises depart from ports in the Mediterranean, you’ll also have the opportunity to visit places like Crete, Split, Bari, Ephesus, Bodrum, Mykonos and/or Santorini before or after your Black Sea exploration.

Silversea Cruises offers myriad options to explore the Black Sea on a cruise. On their (Eastern) Mediterranean cruises, you get to visit beautiful Black Sea destinations such as Odessa, Constanta, Sochi, Batumi, Trabzon and Burgas. All Silversea Black Sea cruises include a memorable crossing of the Bosporus, too. Departure ports for cruises to the Black Sea are either Venice or Athens (Piraeus), with a variety of roundtrip or one-way options. Cruises typically last 15 to 24 days.

Known for their high-end river and yacht cruises, Emerald Cruises is a wonderful choice for Black Sea cruises in style and luxury. On board their superyacht, the Emerald Azzurra, you’ll spend two weeks exploring and experiencing the best of the Black Sea.

Sailing from Athens (Piraeus) to Istanbul, the cruise circuits around the Black Sea, with stops at not-to-miss destinations like Trabzon, Batumi, Sochi, Odessa, Sulina, Varna, Nessebar and more. You can also explore the iconic white houses of Mykonos, Greece and see the historic battle sites at Çanakkale, Turkey.

Last but not least, Scenic Luxury Cruises allows you to immerse yourself in the Black Sea region on a river cruise. Embark on a voyage down the iconic Danube River, one of Europe’s longest rivers, from Budapest to Bucharest.

Meander past fantastic highlights such as Kalocsa in Hungary, the Serbian capital of Belgrade and the spectacular Iron Gates gorge between the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains, as you cruise toward to the Danube River delta on the shores of the Black Sea at Silistra. This extraordinary week-long river cruise to the Black Sea is a superb alternative to the longer ocean cruises in the Black Sea above.

The Black Sea has not emerged as a popular cruise destination (yet), but as you can see, there’s a great deal of potential there. Black Sea cruises continue to offer amazing bang for your buck, sailing to awesome and affordable places in Europe’s far east, the aquatic crossroads of East and West.

One of the advantages of cruise travel is that, in the event of political turmoil or natural disaster, ships can be repositioned to ensure that nervous guests feel safe in the course of their travels.

Of course, during the Covid period, nothing has gone anywhere, which means that forward itinerary planning has undergone something of a reset; it is harder for cruise lines to use historic booking patterns to make a judgement on the future.

Itinerary planners are therefore working with a variety of suppositions as they look forward to 2022 and even 2023. The Mediterranean is of course strong, with easy access through excellent air gateways, and plenty of opportunity for flexibility. After a long period of caution relating to cruising in the Black Sea, we saw a tentative return planned for 2020. Just to remind you, the unrest in Ukraine began with a small revolution early in 2014, resulting in a political crisis after Russia invaded and annexed the Ukrainian region of Crimea. The Crimea itself is still a no-go area, which means that two of the jewels of Black Sea cruise itineraries, Sevastopol and Yalta, can no longer be visited.

Black Sea coast, Turkey

We therefore see two key Black Sea options from the creative Itinerary planners. The first is a focus on the western region of the Black Sea, calling at such ports as Constanta, the gateway to Romania's capital, Bucharest; Bulgaria's UNESCO World Heritage Site at Nessebar; and, of course, elegant Odessa, with her broad boulevards and Parisian-style architecture. These western itineraries often combine with a more extended eastern Mediterranean programme to include Istanbul, the Dardanelles and northern Greece or the Turkish coast.

The second is a more comprehensive Black Sea exploration including lovely Sochi in Russia, with the backdrop of the Caucasus mountains, the rich cultural heritage of Batumi in Georgia, and a variety of intriguing calls along Turkey's northern coast, boasting national parks, archaeological sites and a fascinating history of Ottomans, Goths and Romans.

Some of our favourite small ship cruise lines are featuring Black Sea itineraries both this summer and in 2022 and 2023...

Odessa Opera House, Ukraine

1. Silversea

Whilst the single Black Sea option from Silversea this summer is waitlist only in September 2021, you have some excellent options in summer 2022 on the lovely Silver Spirit (608 guests) in May, July and September, all of them featuring an in-depth 15-day exploration out of Athens and all of them including an overnight stay in Istanbul.

Istanbul, Turkey

2. Saga Cruises

Saga's new boutique ship Spirit of Adventure (999 guests), purpose built for the UK market, sails on a long and intriguing 32-night journey from Southampton in May 2022, taking you all the way through the Mediterranean to the Black Sea and back. Highlights include calls in the Turkish ports of Trabzon, Sinop and Istanbul, the charming old town of Nessebar and the Georgian resort town of Batumi. You'll also visit some fascinating ports on your way to and from the Black Sea, including Tunis, Cagliari and Valletta.

Nessebar, Bulgaria

3. SeaDream Yacht Club

Exploring off the beaten track on a tiny ship is always exciting, and when combined with the laid-back luxury of a SeaDream yacht (112 guests) you have a winner. Their cruise in September 2021 is sold out, but take the opportunity to snap up 10- and 11-day cruises to the western Black Sea in June and August 2022. These itineraries take you from Athens up to Odessa then back down to Istanbul, and also include lovely Aegean islands such as Skyros and Bozcaada.

Skyros island, Greece

Ponant's chic Explorer class yacht Le Bougainville (184 guests) features an appealing 10-night itinerary in July 2021, ending in magical Istanbul where an extended stay is recommended. Unusual ports of call include Bartin, the jumping off point for the UNESCO-listed Ottoman old town of Safranbolu.

Traditional Ottoman houses in Safranbolu, Turkey

5. Atlas Ocean Voyages

New entrant to the market Atlas Ocean Voyages will bring its newly built World Navigator (196 guests) to the Black Sea in July 2021. Long days and overnights in port, as well as extensive land programmes, are key features of an Atlas itinerary. This is a stand-out programme, with an exciting option to add on a trip to Cappadocia after the cruise.

Hot air balloons over Cappadocia, Turkey

Trailblazer Azamara has committed to the Black Sea as a destination with an extensive programme of itineraries, and the option to do a full tour around the shores of the Black Sea on a longer itinerary, or simply to explore the western regions: choose from multiple departures in 2021 on Azamara Quest (710 guests) or in 2022 on Azamara Pursuit (684 guests).

Trojan horse in Cannakale, Turkey

7. Crystal Cruises

In August 2021, Crystal Symphony (848 guests) sets forth from Athens for her own Black Sea itinerary, currently sold out, with alternative options in 2022 and 2023. Crystal's itineraries include all the key Black Sea calls such as Odessa and Constanta, and some also visit the Russian ports of Sochi, host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics, and Novorossiysk, with its fascinating naval history.

Church in Novorossiysk, Russia

8. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

The all-inclusive Regent Seven Seas is particularly appealing when you are sailing to new and remote ports, where you are likely to take advantage of the intriguing range of included shore excursions to make your exploration even more exciting. Join Seven Seas Explorer (750 guests) and explore the western regions of the Black Sea in May 2022 on a varied itinerary that also includes the glamorous Greek isles of Santorini and Mykonos.

Sunset over Santorini, Greece

9. Scenic River Cruises

No Black Sea feature would be complete without a mention of river cruising. European river collectors will be more than familiar with the lower Danube itinerary, starting out from Budapest to explore as far as the Danube Delta on the shores of the Black Sea, with the opportunity to visit Romania's capital Bucharest. Take a look at Scenic's Black Sea Explorer options travelling all the way to Silistra.

Great white pelicans in the Danube Delta, Romania

The Black Sea is an inland sea in Eastern Europe, surrounded by Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania. It is connected to the Mediterranean by the Bosphorus Strait. A Black Sea cruise will take you to lands known best for their history, variety of terrains, unique cultures and long-standing traditions. Port calls in the Ukraine, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania are featured and sailings are typically 7 to 14 nights in length. Enjoy the sunny Crimean Coast, the colorful day-to-day activities of Istanbul, or the therapeutic resorts of Odessa. Itineraries often include visits to Greece and Italy as well.

  • The Black Sea cruise season is from mid-April to mid-October.
  • Black Sea cruises are 7 to 14 nights in length, although a few ships offer longer itineraries.
  • Because you'll need to fly a long distance to reach your port of departure, we suggest that you arrive at the port city at least one or two days in advance of your Black Sea cruise. This will give you time to rest and get oriented before boarding the ship. Most cruise lines offer pre-cruise hotel packages.

Still something of a hidden treasure where cruising is concerned, the Black Sea is growing in popularity amongst those who are looking to explore several of the world’s most captivating places in one trip. Bordering six countries – Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine – The Black Sea’s rich history and culture makes it the ideal destination if you’re looking for something more than just relaxation on your cruise holiday.

Black Sea Cruise Itineraries

Black Sea cruise itineraries depart from Istanbul and Athens, with itineraries lasting between 11 and 14 nights. Black Sea cruises will generally form part of a cruise line’s Mediterranean season and often feature a segment of the Greek Isles at the beginning or end of the itinerary, depending on where you board the ship.

The most frequently visited port of call on a Black Sea cruise is Odessa in Ukraine. Home to stunning beaches and incredible 19th-century architecture, most itineraries will include an overnight stay so that you can make the most of your time in the city. Constanta in Romania is another popular stop. Here, you can enjoy trips to famous monuments, such as the famous Tropaeum Traiani Monument; an eye-catching symbol of the Roman Empires’ victories.

Depending on which cruise line you choose for your Black Sea cruise, your itinerary may also feature some of the region’s smaller gems. Batumi in Georgia is a great place to visit on a cruise and is home to a fascinating Old Town district and beautiful botanic gardens in the northern part of the city. Similarly, the town of Nessebur in Bulgaria will delight with its cobbled streets and Byzantine-era ruins.

The best time for Black Sea cruises

The majority of Black Sea cruises operate between late April and October. However, the summer months are perhaps the best time to visit the region, with the long hot days and warm evenings creating the perfect environment for relaxation and exploration. If you would prefer to visit the Black Sea when the temperatures are slightly cooler, then late September and October are recommended, with the added benefit of less cruise traffic during this time of year.

Cruise lines that visit the Black Sea

Due to the size of the ports and the restrictions on cruise traffic, most cruise lines that visit the Black Sea are on the smaller side of the spectrum. Regent Seven Seas and Azamara both offer Black Sea cruises from Istanbul and Athens, while operators including Saga Cruises and Fred Olsen Cruise Lines visit the region as part of longer, no-fly itineraries in the Mediterranean. The Black Sea is also a top-rated destination for river cruise lines, with AmaWaterways , Scenic and Emerald Waterways offering an array of itineraries from Budapest.

Layers of history, majestic old port cities and above all, glimpses into a world once closed to the outside, are all reasons for the revival of the Black Sea as a culture-packed cruise destination.

You’ll usually embark in Istanbul for the scenic sailing along the narrow Bosphorus to the mouth of the Black Sea. Other highlights include the grand, baroque boulevards of Odessa and pretty Nessebar in Bulgaria, peppered with medieval orthodox churches and clinging to a rocky island connected to the mainland by an isthmus.

The Georgian port of Batumi, with its waterfront of futuristic glass towers, lies against a backdrop of the hazy, green Caucasus mountains. From Sochi, you can visit Stalin’s dacha , the holiday home where the dictator would summer, eerily preserved as it was until his death in 1953.

Some cruises also incorporate the Sea of Marmara, calling at Canakkale for Troy, or Mudanya for trips to Bursa, the original Ottoman capital.

Editor: despite Russia’s illegal and heinous invasion of Ukraine, we’ve left Russian content in our guides. There’s no reason you can’t add Russia to your travel bucket list for future visits. The war, and Putin, won’t last forever, and then we hope you go back. There are many innocent Russian people, whose livelihoods depend on tourism, suffering greatly too from the actions of this evil man and his cronies.

Getting there & doing it

Typically, cruises depart from Athens or Istanbul , visiting Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and sometimes, the northern Turkish coast. Note that Crimea is still closed to tourism. A cruise is by far the best way to take in the Black Sea ports; connecting all these cities by flight would be complex and expensive. Also, these are port-intensive cruises, with little in the way of beach excursions.

Adding on a few days in either Istanbul or Athens pre- or post-cruise is worthwhile if you haven’t explored either in-depth before.

Black Sea Attractions & Landmarks Guide

The Black Sea in southeastern Europe has an ancient history as a prime trading route between east and west. Bordered by Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, and Georgia, it has a notable recent history as well -- the disputed Crimea region is located here. It's also been the scene of the recent Sochi Olympics and the Yalta Conference at the end of World War II. Dotted with resorts and bearing distinct eastern flavors, the Black Sea has become prime cruising territory, highlighted by Turkey's Istanbul (which sits at its entrance); Odessa, Ukraine; and Yalta and Sevastapol on the Crimean Peninsula.

I have been on 2 Viking cruises, 1 a river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, and 1 sea cruise in Scandinavia. I would highly recommend both. They aren't cheap but are truly 5-star. The amenities and food could not be faulted. They were very organized with their onshore excursions and there were good choices in the variety of excursions offered with great service. A highlight for me was the lack of a casino and no children allowed. I have been on other cruise 'brands' and nothing else lives up to Viking.

Statuary on a building in Port Odessa in Ukraine

Odessa, Ukraine

The Pearl of the Black Sea, Odesa is one of Ukraine’s most fascinating and colorful cities, luring visitors with its Baroque architecture, Mediterranean climate and dramatic history. This sprawling enclave of just over a million people celebrated its 200th anniversary in 1994, commemorating the date when Catherine the Great established Odesa and began to build one of Europe’s great ports. Today, the city offers an eclectic mix: a buzzing street life, outstanding museums, Soviet murals and opulent shops housed in 19th-century and Art Nouveau buildings. The main thoroughfare, Deribasivska Street, is home to the Odesa Passage, an elaborate shopping arcade that dates back to the late 19th century, while Primorsky Boulevard teems with vendors hawking all sorts of wares and locals promenading in smart attire. Primorsky is also where visitors will find the famous Potemkin Steps, a cascade of 192 stairs that most people know from Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 film Battleship Potemkin. A statue of Aleksandr Pushkin in the neighborhood memorializes the famous writer's 13 months in exile in Odesa, after he was expelled from Russia in 1823. Fans of Pushkin’s works flock here to pay homage to the author of the classic Russian novel Eugene Onegin , much of which was written in Odesa.

EMBARK IN BUDAPEST

Arrive in Budapest, where your five-star floating hotel is moored. The friendly crew will welcome you on board and help you settle into your spacious, luxuriously appointed suite. The ship remains here overnight, so watch dusk descend over Hungary’s capital as you enjoy your first dinner on board.

Route Map

One of the most thrilling aspects of a cruise is waking up somewhere new, and there’s a real sense of excitement as we explore lands unknown to many until the Iron Curtain lifted. Hungary itself has so much to offer; situated at a crossroads in central Europe, it’s a mesmerising blend of European and Ottoman influences, rich in culture and history. Our adventure begins this morning when we arrive in Kalocsa, a city whose 1,000-year-old lore swirls with tales of warlike bishops, saintly kings, rampaging Ottomans and Magyar heroes. Among its fine buildings you’ll discover an impressive Baroque cathedral and the grand Archbishop’s Palace, with its Ceremonial Hall displaying a replica of the Hungarian holy crown.

You can choose to enjoy a walking tour of the town seeing the sights plus the fascinating Paprika Museum; the region is one of the biggest producers of the seasoning that’s an essential part of Hungarian cuisine – goulash being a famous example. There are many types and strengths of ‘red gold’, but the best variety is said to come from here, due to its rich colour and robust flavour.

Alternatively we take the short drive to a paprika house on the outskirts of the town to learn more about its production before continuing on a scenic drive into the Puszta, Hungary’s Great Plain, a hauntingly atmospheric prairie whose spirit is burnt into the Magyar soul. Stretching as far as the eye can see, it is home to villages seemingly frozen in time, while Hungarian grey cattle, spiral-horned sheep and buffalo graze on its pastures. The Puszta is also famed for its horses, and we visit an equestrian farm to watch a performance by some of the region’s most skilled riders. You’ll have the opportunity to take a horse-drawn carriage ride and experience this unique wilderness from a different perspective.

We return to the ship for lunch as our elegant vessel seamlessly glides away from her mooring. Later we enjoy a welcome drink with the Captain in the lounge before descending the elegant staircase to the restaurant for a special Welcome Dinner.

Paprika

This morning we arrive in historic Belgrade. The only European capital built at the confluence of two rivers, the city has been fought over numerous times, most recently during the Second World War and the Kosovo War, when it faced months of NATO airstrikes. Dramatically sited overlooking both rivers is Kalemegdan Park, which includes in its grounds the city’s iconic fortress, a stronghold built by the Celts, expanded by the Romans and besieged over a hundred times during its history – all detailed in its military museum. Despite its past, Belgrade is now a revitalized and forward-looking city and a delightful and varied place to explore, with delicate Art Nouveau facades tucked away among the stark concrete towers of the Communist era.

We enjoy a guided tour, seeing all the main sights such as the cathedral, Republic Square and Prince Michael Street with its wealth of 19th-century buildings, some bearing the scars of recent conflicts among their intricate Habsburg ornamentation. After lunch, you are free to explore this fascinating capital, still one of the least visited in Europe. Maybe you’d like to wander the Old Town’s lattice of winding streets, pausing for a welcome drink in one of the grand coffee houses or visit the bubbling bohemian quarter, which is being transformed into a 21st-century cultural hub by an influx of creative talent.

As the evening draws in, relax with a stroll or a drink on the Sun Deck before tonight’s culinary delights.

IRON GATES GORGE

For many, today will be a highlight of the cruise as we begin our passage through the magnificent Iron Gates Gorge. One of the most memorable stretches of the Danube, this is where the river cuts its mighty path between the Carpathian and Balkan mountain ranges, forming part of the boundary between Serbia and Romania. The ‘true’ Iron Gates is a single narrow gorge, but the name covers an entire 83-mile stretch of valleys where towering limestone cliffs plunge into the depths below. During the 1960s and ’70s, two hydroelectric power stations were built here and their dams raised the river level by over 100 feet, submerging a number of historic settlements. We pass through the Great Kazan, meaning ‘cauldron’, where the river narrows to just 500 feet. As the Captain skilfully steers us through, you’ll see the huge sculpture of a Romanian hero – Decebalus – carved into the rock. Created in the 1990s, at over 130 feet high it is the largest rock relief in Europe – it even dwarfs the US presidents at Mount Rushmore. Decebalus was the last king of Dacia, the kingdom stretching from the Carpathians to the Black Sea. A warrior through and through, he fought the Roman Empire in three campaigns before Emperor Trajan got the better of him. Decebalus fled into the Carpathians, taking his own life rather than being captured.

On a day like this, the spacious Sun Deck comes into its own. Watch the spectacular scenery drift by from the comfort of a sun lounger or maybe enjoy a drink with new friends. You may even find an ice cream being served on the Bow Deck, which is beautifully attired with soft furnishings and stylish wooden fittings.

By now you’ll have come to appreciate the luxuries on board your five-star ship – little touches from complimentary dressing gowns and slippers to plush carpets in the corridors and the marble-topped bar. Crossing the border into Bulgaria tonight, you awake in Nikopol, a town dating back to Roman times, and after breakfast, we drive across the Danubian Plain to Pleven. Surrounded by several thousand acres of parks and forests, the town is famed as the scene of a major siege in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877. The joint Russian and Romanian army took five months to take the town, partly because the defending Turks were the first in European history to use repeating rifles. Pleven was a decisive battle, leading to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the restoration of Bulgaria as a state and the independence of Romania. Opened to commemorate the battle’s centenary, the Pleven Panorama tells the story of this engagement through a series of moving photographs and canvasses. We enjoy some free time here, so perhaps visit the St George Chapel Mausoleum, a memorial to the soldiers killed during the siege, or one of the town’s many other museums. Or simply wander the Old Town and enjoy the tranquillity of its pedestrian-only streets.

During lunch we slip our moorings for an afternoon’s cruising, so why not enjoy the invigorating river breeze up on the Sun Deck? It will soon be time for dinner, so reconvene with your fellow travelers for an aperitif in the bar.

best black sea cruises

Today we visit Bucharest, with its tree-lined boulevards and elegant belle-époque villas – echoes of the hedonistic 1900s when it earned the nickname ‘Little Paris’ – dotted among the utilitarian architectural legacy of Communist rule. Dominating the capital city of Romania, though, is the astonishing Palace of the Parliament, a colossal concrete extravagance commissioned by the Communist dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu. Started in 1984 and still unfinished, it is the second-largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon – so big that only 400 of the 1,100 rooms are used. Furnished with all the gaudiness expected from a heartless despot at the head of a bankrupt state, from marble staircases to mosaics and chandeliers, to some it’s a marvel, to others a monument to vanity.

On our guided tour we see the Palace of the Parliament, which really has to be seen to be believed, and the city’s other main sights, such as the former royal palace – now the national art museum – and the Athenaeum with its impressive Baroque cupola and remarkable acoustics. There are also some superb Orthodox churches and squares, including Revolution Square, named after the 1989 uprising that swept away Ceausescu’s regime.

There’s also time to explore this vibrant city under your own steam. Lunch isn’t included today, so seek out a cozy restaurant in the Old Town for a fortifying plate of traditional meatballs, generously spiced with garlic, dill, and parsley; freshly stuffed peppers or a hearty vegetable and dumpling soup.

We return to the ship with time to relax before dinner. Perhaps borrow a board game or novel from the library or book yourself in for a manicure or pedicure at the on-board Hair and Nail Salon.

DANUBE DELTA

Overnight we cruise towards the city of Tulcea, clinging to seven hills overlooking the river and regarded as the gateway to the vast Danube Delta on the edge of the Black Sea. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Danube Delta is the best preserved and second largest river delta in Europe, consisting of 2,200 square miles of rivers, marshes, tree-fringed lakes and reed islands, where nearly 3,500 animal and fish species, and 1,700 types of plant, make their home. A bird watcher's paradise, the maze of canals bordered by willows and oaks offers the perfect breeding ground for countless species. Millions of Egyptian white pelicans arrive here every spring to raise their young, while equal numbers of Arctic geese come to escape the harsh Northern European winters. Keep an eye out for cormorants and white-tailed eagles.

This morning, we take a coach from  Brăila to Tulcea, where we’ll board smaller boats and sail into the tranquil Danube Delta. Our guide helps to point out some of the fascinating flora and fauna – you could spot a colourful kingfisher or a catfish darting beneath the water’s glassy surface.

As dusk begins to fall on this magical landscape, we slip our moorings again. Enjoy another delicious dinner, maybe tonight choosing a more intimate dining experience in the Bistro at the stern.

best black sea cruises

Today we begin our return passage, but these lands still have so much to reveal. Hold on to your hat up on deck, as this area is well known for its windy weather and windmills were once a common sight. Watch the rocky shoreline drift by, dotted with the occasional ruined fortress. We depart for the ancient city of Constanta, described by the Roman poet Ovid as ‘the end of the world’ and with a history dating back over 2,500 years. Originally known as Tomis, it is said that Jason landed here with the Argonauts after finding the Golden Fleece. Situated on several trade routes, it became a thriving commercial center during Roman times and still is today. Numerous remains from Greek and Roman times are on display in the city’s archaeological and mosaics museums, the latter housing the largest – an impressive 9,150 square feet – and best-preserved Roman mosaic in the world. Constanta’s landmark is the Art Nouveau casino, with its views of the Black Sea. Now unused, it was built by the Romanian King Carol I, who hoped its construction would transform the city into a bathing resort for the elite during the inter-war years, something that never quite transpired. More recently, it became one end of the shortest navigable route between the North and Black Seas when the Main-Danube Canal opened in 1992.

There is free time to explore, so perhaps visit one of the museums or simply enjoy the sea air with a portside walk.

VELIKO TARNOVO, ARBANASSI & IVANOVO

Crossing into Bulgaria, we arrive in Rousse, a city known as ‘Little Vienna’ for its wealth of fine 19th-century buildings. A scenic drive brings us to possibly Bulgaria’s most beautiful city – Veliko Tarnovo, the ‘City of the Tsars’ and former capital, located in a rugged landscape entangled by the meanderings of the Yantra River. Its Old Town is clustered on three hills with its houses stacked on steeply sided valleys, while the remains of the once-impregnable fortress complex stands on Tsarevets Hill. Within the walls of this redoubt are the ruins of the Tsar’s Palace and, at the summit, the Patriarch’s Palace, which includes the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension of God. Much of Veliko Tarnovo was destroyed by the Ottomans, but in the 19th century, it became an important trading center again. Tucked away in its picturesque cobbled streets are tiny workshops, where you can watch copper pots being beaten or wooden utensils skilfully carved. It is delightful to wander here, keeping an eye out for interesting traditional snacks to try, admiring the architecture while soaking up the atmosphere.

Later we head to the village of Arbanassi, set high on a plateau. During Ottoman times, it became a commercial center for traders and their caravans, crammed with wares bound for places as distant as Italy, Russia and even India. Perhaps visit one of the richly ornamented mansion houses of the period, with their fortress-like stone walls, or the unassuming Church of the Nativity – once inside you’ll be dazzled by the intensely colored frescoes.

We end the day with a visit to the Churches of Ivanovo, a fascinating complex of churches, chapels, and monasteries hewn into the solid rock during the 12th century and with frescoes dating back to the 14th century, so exquisite and historically significant they are now on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

BELOGRADCHIK

This morning why not take a cup of coffee up on deck and soak up the spectacular open spaces of this landscape, where thick woods of fragrant pine and silver fir cling to the banks, forming a hazy outline on the distant horizon? After lunch we moor in Vidin, home to the Baba Vidin, the only entirely preserved medieval fortress in the country. From here, we drive into this rugged wilderness and suddenly the horizon is dotted with huge sandstone cliffs, in a spectrum of orange-reds and yellows, eroded into huge, bizarre shapes. These are the Belogradchik Rocks – unique and dramatic, they cover an area of 35 square miles, some reaching as high as 600 feet. Many of these gigantic natural sculptures are named after people or objects they are thought to resemble, while others are associated with colorful legends.

We return to the ship for dinner. Later on, maybe enjoy a drink in the lounge with your companions while the resident pianist plays gentle melodies.

best black sea cruises

IRON GATES & LEPENSKI VIR

This morning’s cruising brings us once again to the dramatic splendor of the Iron Gates Gorge, at the heart of Serbia’s Djerdap National Park. The gorge was cut out of the Carpathian mountains over millions of years as the Danube drained the Pannonian Sea. Among the park’s forests of the ancient oak, hazel and beech lies a rich preserve of game, including deer and wild boar. Mountain goats roam the rocky cliffs of Djerdap Kazan, while bears, wolves, foxes, and wildcats populate the dense woodland. Keep an eye out for eagles and falcons, too. Why not enjoy the splendor of this stretch of the river from a sun lounger on deck or through the panoramic windows in the ship’s lounge?

This afternoon we moor in Donji Milanovac and take the short drive to Lepenski Vir, one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe, dating back to 9,500 BC. It consists of a series of Mesolithic villages located on a high terrace overlooking the Danube. The wooden houses were laid out in a fan shape and used one of the first types of concrete as their foundations, while their floors were made of sandstone, often covered with limestone plaster and decorated with red and white pigments. Our guided tour will reveal more about this fascinating place and how these ancient people lived.

The numerous fortresses along the Danube are reminders that the area has been fought over for centuries and this morning we pass one of the most impressive – the medieval Smederevo Fortress. After a lazy day we moor in Novi Sad, Serbia’s second-largest city, in the shadow of the Fruska Gora mountain, its fertile slopes terraced with vineyards. The climate and the proximity to the Danube make this region ideal for wine production, particularly Riesling, but there are many others produced here including Bermet, a vermouth-like dessert wine with a unique aromatic sweetness. Enjoy a guided tour of this vibrant city which flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming known as the ‘Athens of Serbia’. See its old Town Hall on the impressive main square, flanked by lovely 19th-century architecture, its ancient castle, and synagogue. Towering over it all is the mighty Petrovaradin Fortress with its complex system of underground tunnels. The minute and hour hands of its iconic clock face are reversed, supposedly so that fishermen could still tell the time at a distance. You can learn more about the fortress and its history at its museum.

We moor here this evening, so why not enjoy an after-dinner stroll and take in the relaxed ambiance of this lovely city?

best black sea cruises

OSIJEK & VUKOVAR

Today we cross into Croatia and stop in Vukovar, the country’s largest river port, located at the confluence of the Danube and Vuka Rivers. Vukovar boasted a prosperous manufacturing industry and a picturesque Baroque center until the tragic events of the civil war unfolded, and the city was almost completely destroyed. Renovation to restore the city to its former glory is very much ongoing.

Here we enjoy a guided tour, seeing the main sights and learning about the city’s tumultuous past. We then drive to the historic city of Osijek, which hugs the banks of the River Drava. We explore the Old Town – behind its thick stone walls lies an intriguing market square, lined by handsome public buildings with pastel-colored facades. In the Upper City, you’ll see the neo-Gothic cathedral, its red-brick spire soaring above the rooftops. Much of Osijek has been restored, but some buildings still bear the scars of the fighting.

This evening we cross into Hungary again, as the chef presents tonight’s appetizing menu.

best black sea cruises

As gentle pastoral landscapes slip by, Budapest’s brooding skyline comes into view once more. Straddling the Danube, this imperial capital is a collage of palatial buildings, grand domes and attractive Baroque churches with soaring spires. From Roman ruins to Ottoman Turkish baths and elegant Art Nouveau facades, the eclectic mix of architectural styles reflects the city’s varied history, with numerous foreign powers ruling here over the centuries. We enjoy a guided tour, seeing all the main sights of this lovely city including the iconic Parliament Building, the National Gallery with its huge collection of Hungarian masterpieces, and the Matthias Church with its intricate rose windows. The rest of the day is at leisure. Perhaps head back to the Castle District to take in the panoramic views or explore one of the city’s many museums and galleries.

The Captain’s Dinner is served this evening, with a superb menu reflecting the countries and regions we have visited. As the sun sets on this memorable city, retire to the bar with your fellow travelers to reflect on all you have seen during this exceptional cruise.

12 best Panama Canal cruises for a bucket-list trip

Donna Heiderstadt

A Panama Canal transit is a rite of passage for many cruise lovers. Experiencing this marvel of early 20th-century engineering appeals to those with a wide array of interests, from history and politics to colonial architecture and wildlife. Built by the U.S. government between 1903 and 1914, this 50-mile waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans revolutionized shipping by creating an expedited route for the transit of cargo and, ultimately, cruise ship passengers.

Panama Canal itineraries are offered by almost every cruise line. Thanks to a 2016 canal expansion project, a third set of locks can now accommodate larger vessels. It's possible to cruise the Panama Canal on ships of all sizes (from 148 guests to more than 3,000) on itineraries that range from a week in the sun to a six-month world cruise.

Some ships sail a full transit of the canal, from the Atlantic to the Pacific or vice versa. These one-way journeys between Miami or Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles or San Diego visit ports in Central America, South America, Mexico and California.

Others sail only a partial transit, entering the locks from the Atlantic and cruising into Lake Gatun before turning around and exiting again. These itineraries, sailing round-trip from Florida ports, combine the canal experience with island hopping in the Caribbean.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The array of options means that a Panama Canal cruise experience is possible even if you're short on time or have a limited budget — and chances are high that your favorite cruise line offers one or more itineraries. Most sailings attract couples, typically retirees, but if the timing is right, a Panama Canal cruise can also be a great multigenerational experience.

Here are a dozen of the best Panama Canal cruises to consider.

Holland America's 14- to 17-night Panama Canal cruises

best black sea cruises

Holland America offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises , but the most popular itineraries span 14 to 17 nights. They offer a full transit between Fort Lauderdale or Miami and San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia, or vice versa and are offered on multiple ships, including Koningsdam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. These sailings call on Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Longer sailings also call on several Caribbean islands.

Who should go : Holland America ships sailing a full transit are popular with retired couples who appreciate the cruise line's consistency and good value. All four ships accommodate between 1,432 and 2,650 passengers and offer signature onboard experiences that include the Greenhouse Spa and the World Stage for evening production shows. The larger Eurodam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Amsterdam feature additional specialty dining options, such as Tamarind and Nami Sushi, as well as popular music venues B.B. King's Blues Club and Billboard Onboard.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami cruise

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ship, Seven Seas Grandeur, debuted in November 2023 and will transit the Panama Canal on several occasions in the next few years. The 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Dec. 13-29, 2024) and 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 8-23, 2025) transits offer luxurious all-inclusive pampering, plus port calls in Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas and Acapulco, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Panama City; Cartagena, Colombia; and George Town, Grand Cayman.

Plan even further ahead for Grandeur's 22-night Miami-to-Los Angeles transit (Jan. 3-25, 2026) to enjoy additional Caribbean ports of call. Who should go : This itinerary can be a wonderful splurge for a couple seeking to celebrate a milestone anniversary or birthday in a memorable way on a luxurious new ship. Prices start at a hefty $10,099 per person for a spacious balcony suite, but they also include airfare, transfers, gratuities, dining and beverages, Wi-Fi and shore excursions — meaning you'll hardly have any other vacation expenses.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 12-night South America: Peru, Colombia & Ecuador cruise

best black sea cruises

There's no "Panama Canal" in this itinerary's name, but Norwegian Cruise Line 's 12-night South America: Peru, Colombia & Ecuador cruise (Feb. 27-March 11, 2026) does a full canal transit as it sails from Miami to Lima, Peru. The 2,402-passenger Norwegian Jade will visit historic Santa Marta and Cartagena in Colombia; Panama City; Manta, Ecuador; and Trujillo and Lima in Peru.

Who should go : Couples and friends interested in experiencing not just a Panama Canal transit but some of the top coastal experiences along the Pacific coast of South America should choose this itinerary. Norwegian Jade is an older, smaller vessel that was refurbished in 2022 and features a top deck more conducive to sunning than thrill rides. The ship also has a surprising number of restaurants for its size: two main dining rooms, a buffet restaurant, a pub-style bar and grill, an Asian restaurant and an outdoor grill on a complimentary basis, plus six specialty dining venues (including a steakhouse and venues showcasing French, Italian and Japanese cuisines) for an added fee.

(The second sailing visits San Diego instead of Ensenada.)

Who should go : Oceania's newest ship offers a great compromise between a small and medium-size vessel and is ideal for those seeking a premium cruise experience with casual sophistication. Older couples especially will appreciate the ship's elegant cabin decor in soft hues of wheat and seagrass, mix of grand and intimate spaces and wide array of dining options. (Two new and noteworthy venues on Vista include Ember for inventive American cuisine and Aquamar Kitchen for wellness-focused breakfast, lunch and dinner.) A more immersive mixology program features curated cocktail menus, indulgent pairing experiences and specialty beverage carts.

Cunard's 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco cruise

best black sea cruises

Cunard's brand-new 2,996-passenger ship Queen Anne, which debuts in May 2023, will make both its first transatlantic crossing and its first Panama Canal transit on this historic 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco sailing (Jan. 9-Feb. 4, 2025). The ship will first cross the Atlantic and then overnight in New York before calling on Aruba, transiting the canal and visiting Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It will conclude with an overnight in San Francisco.

The winter transatlantic crossing might not be right for everyone, but the second half of this voyage explores warm-weather destinations with plenty of relaxing sea days for sunning, reading, taking dance lessons and enjoying expert lectures.

Who should go : British cruise line Cunard appeals mainly to older travelers who savor the line's formal traditions. This cruise is for you if you enjoy afternoon tea, dressing up for dinner, gala evenings and dancing to big-band orchestras. This particular itinerary appeals to retirees who wish to visit several cruise regions in one sailing.

Viking's 180-day World Voyage

For the ultimate cruise indulgence, Viking's 180-day World Voyage I includes a Panama Canal transit (on Christmas Day, no less) as 930-passenger Viking Sky cruises from Fort Lauderdale to New York City (Dec. 19, 2024-June 17, 2025). This round-the-world cruise will visit 37 countries as guests enjoy Viking Sky's modern Scandinavian interior decor, soothing LivNordic Spa, two pools (including one with a retractable roof) and six onboard restaurants. Pricing includes airfare, gratuities and complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner.

If this longer voyage is sold out, consider the 138-day Viking World Cruise (departing Dec. 19, 2025), also on Viking Sky. This sailing, which travels from Fort Lauderdale to London (Greenwich), visits 28 countries and transits the Panama Canal on the eighth day.

Who should go : With cruise fares that start at $79,995 and $59,995 per person, respectively, these extended adventures at sea require a luxury budget. Viking 's base clientele is mostly retired or close-to-retirement-age professionals who enjoy the cruise line's focus on educational enrichment (via onboard lectures) and serene ambience (there's no casino, and the nighttime vibe is on the quiet side).

The best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Even with a season that only runs from April through October, there are some 40 big ships and dozens of small ships cruising Alaska , making it one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world after the Caribbean and Europe. The best Alaska cruises range from off-the-beaten-path voyages on vessels carrying fewer than 100 passengers to weeklong jaunts through the Inside Passage aboard megaships that hold thousands.

The itinerary choices are numerous in Alaska. Some ships stick to tried-and-true ports, sailing through Southeast Alaska and into western Canada. Others wander deeper along the Alaska coastline to places such as the Kenai Peninsula, north to Nome and Barrow and even deep into the Bering Sea.

Some trips hit multiple national parks; others dive into Alaska culture, allowing guests to learn the stories told by totem poles or hear about “the big one” from a fisherman at a dive bar.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

It can be hard to figure out which ship will deliver your idea of a “bucket list” experience in The Last Frontier. A lot comes down to your travel style, preferences and budget. Some travelers demand luxury, while others don’t mind going less fancy if it means close encounters with bears and other creatures in the wilderness. Some look for romance, while others want to introduce the kids or grandkids to glaciers and eagles, gold panning and sled dogs.

The good news is there’s a ship in Alaska for you no matter your taste or style. Here’s a beginner’s guide to the best Alaska cruises to help you narrow down your choices.

Best for megaresort fans

Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean both sail some of their largest ships in Alaska. They are floating megaresorts, carrying thousands, and are big on amenities, glitz and a certain amount of glamor — think flashy casinos, Broadway shows, lavish spas. Dining and drinking venues number in the dozens, while amusement park features thrill the kids and adrenaline-seekers.

Norwegian Encore

On Norwegian Encore, you can race along a go-kart racetrack, compete in outdoor laser tag and zoom down slides at the water park while you traverse Alaska’s Inside Passage. The ship sails seven-night cruises from Seattle, visiting Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan in Alaska, as well as Victoria, British Columbia, and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve .

Ovation of the Seas

On Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, you can order a drink from a robotic bartender, try simulated skydiving or surfing experiences and take a ride in a glass capsule that travels high above your ship on a mechanical arm — a weird and wonderful way to see the Alaska scenery.

Ovation of the Seas sails round-trip from Seattle on seven-night cruises, but the exact itinerary varies by week. The ship cruises Endicott Arm for scenic views of Dawes Glacier and typically visits three Alaska ports and Victoria.

Best for land and sea adventures

You’ve traveled far to get to Alaska, and it would be a shame to miss inland sights such as Denali National Park and Preserve and the sight of Denali, North America’s largest peak — so big it’s often shrouded in clouds caused by its own weather system.

Market leaders Holland America Line and Princess Cruises both send a half-dozen ships to Alaska each year, and they have 75 and 55 years in the market, respectively.

They top the list in terms of cruises, as well as cruise tours, which combine time sailing with overnight stays on land. The companies operate their own lodges, rail cars and motorcoaches for exploration of Alaska’s interior and beyond. Many of the ships have permission to sail in Glacier Bay.

Related: The coolest things to do on an Alaska cruise

Choose from 10- to 17-night land tours that combine a standard weeklong cruise (sometimes half a cruise) with time spent exploring Alaska’s interior by bus, train or even plane.

Holland America will base six ships in Alaska in 2024, with tour offerings to Denali, Fairbanks and Anchorage.

However, it also offers nine- to 14-night cruise tours on Koningsdam that head into the Canadian Yukon, following the route of the Klondike Gold Rush from Alaska to northwestern Canada. Disembark your cruise ship in Skagway, then travel to Whitehorse and Dawson City in the Yukon before continuing on to Fairbanks (the gateway to Arctic Alaska), Denali National Park and Anchorage.

Sapphire Princess

Princess Cruises offers a cruise tour where you visit four national parks: Glacier Bay, Denali, the Kenai Fjords and America’s largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias. The 15- and 17-night trips combine a seven-night cruise on Sapphire Princess from Vancouver to Whittier, Alaska, with another week or more on land, ending in Fairbanks or Anchorage.

Best for travelers on a budget

Older ships in Norwegian and Royal Caribbean’s fleets tend to offer more reduced prices than you’ll find on the lines’ larger and newer ships, based on the fact the older ships don’t have as many bells and whistles.

Since they have so many ships in the market, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises also tend to offer frequent sales — especially on their older tonnage. These ships have a loyal following and tend to have fewer families on board, which some couples find particularly appealing.

Related: Best time to cruise Alaska

If you’re looking for other surefire ways to save, consider sailings in the area’s shoulder season. You’ll find better deals from April to early June and in September than you will in the height of summer.

Also, in Alaska, balcony cabins are highly desirable, with everyone seeking views of the wilderness, snow-capped peaks and glaciers. As those reserves get low, the prices tend to get higher. Bargain seekers should either book early for these accommodations or choose inside, outside or guarantee cabins (where you don’t pick your room location) to save more.

Radiance of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s 20-year-old ship Radiance of the Seas mainly sails weeklong, one-way cruises between Vancouver and Seward, Alaska, with prices below $100 per person, per night, for inside and outside cabins on many departures.

However, its early-season May 2024 sailing from Seward to Vancouver is the cheapest Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise of the season. It starts at $368 per person for an inside cabin.

Grand Princess and Sapphire Princess

Princess Cruises has so many ships based in Alaska that you’re bound to find deals, especially on shoulder-season cruises. Both Grand and Sapphire Princess offer weeklong Alaska cruises in May 2024 starting from $548 per person for inside cabins. The itinerary starts in Vancouver and ends in Whittier, Alaska, with calls in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway and scenic cruising in Glacier Bay and College Fjord.

Best for off-the-beaten-path travel

Want to see and deeply experience coastal Alaska, and don’t mind a mellower environment where lectures and impromptu guitar singalongs replace casinos and show productions? Consider lines such as UnCruise Adventures , Lindblad Expeditions and Alaskan Dream Cruises, all with ships that carry fewer than 100 passengers (and in the case of Alaskan Dream, even under 20 passengers).

On these small ships, captains have the flexibility to alter itineraries and linger if the naturalist onboard spots a pod of whales or bears digging for clams on a beach.

Small ships can go places bigger ships can’t, so itineraries stretch far beyond the traditional ports. You’ll visit more remote places such as Petersburg, a fishing town with strong Norwegian roots, and Wrangell, one of Alaska’s oldest communities. Some itineraries are conducted entirely in the wild, with no port calls at all.

UnCruise Adventures

UnCruise Adventures explores Southeast Alaska on seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries. A day might start with a morning birding expedition, continue with a kayaking adventure and end with an evening campfire ashore. You might visit LeConte and Baird Glaciers (where the big ships don’t go), plus UnCruise has the only permits for hiking and biking adventures on Chichagof Island.

Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad Expeditions frequents off-the-beaten-path destinations in both Alaska and British Columbia, with itineraries ranging from six to 15 nights.

Guests might explore the small fishing town of Petersburg or discover native petroglyphs on the beaches of Wrangell Island in Alaska, or search for grizzly bears in Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest. Lindblad has special permits to bring passengers into the wilderness of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and the Tongass National Forest, beyond what the big ships can offer.

Alaskan Dream Cruises

Alaskan-owned Alaskan Dream Cruises’ ships carry 12 to 76 passengers to remote Native villages that rarely see visitors, with plenty of time for wildlife viewing far from the cruise ship crowds. Itineraries range from five to nine nights, from departure ports such as Sitka, Ketchikan and Juneau.

Best for families

If you’re traveling with your kids or grandkids in Alaska and want an activity- and entertainment-packed experience, target the newest and biggest ships of Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival and especially Disney Cruise Line. All have excellent camp-like activity programs for kids, plus eye-popping amusement attractions.

Disney Wonder

On Disney ships, Goofy might make an appearance as you admire soaring eagles, blue icebergs and glaciers. The extensive children’s program, entertainment and such activities as water slides and play areas deliver what you would expect from the purveyor of dreams. Bonus: Cabins are designed with families in mind and include split bathrooms (one with a toilet and sink, the other with a shower/tub combo and sink).

Discovery Princess

While lacking in whiz-bang attractions, Princess Cruises is another good choice, both for its children’s and teens program, complete with spacious facilities, and for such programming as bringing sled dogs on board, which is a hit with young passengers. The line’s newest ship, Discovery Princess, sails round trip from Seattle, a convenient U.S. home port for families to fly or drive to.

Carnival Spirit

Water slides, a partnership with Dr. Seuss and three hangouts for kids and teens make Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Spirit a great bet for families in Alaska.

The ship’s huge array of included quick eats — pizza, tacos, Guy Fieri’s burgers and unlimited soft serve ice cream — and casual atmosphere take the stress out of dining with the family. The ship sails round trip from Seattle on seven-night itineraries that call in Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria, with scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord.

Best for luxury lovers

If you envision sipping Champagne as you watch a glacier thunderously calve into the sea, consider booking one of the all-inclusive luxury cruise lines in Alaska: Seabourn , Regent Seven Seas Cruises or Silversea .

All these lines include ships that are experts at delivering gourmet cuisine and the other finer things in life in intimate, cushy floating environments. Additionally, all the lines are big on featuring lectures by experts, which provides passengers with a deeper insight into Alaska.

Itineraries tend to include the popular ports and beyond. You might, for instance, visit Wrangell and Prince Rupert, a port city in Canada, and linger in places such as the Misty Fjords and Prince William Sound. Seven- to 14-night sailings embark from ports such as Vancouver, Seward and Juneau.

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent’s 750-passenger Seven Seas Explorer is an all-suite ship offering guests in Alaska multiple gourmet onboard restaurants, all-inclusive beverages, free airfare and included gratuities. Many shore excursions are complimentary. Enjoy little luxuries, like an afternoon in the thermal suite of the two-story spa-and-fitness center, or really splurge out by booking the Regent Suite, the most lavish suite you’ll find at sea.

Seabourn Odyssey

The 450-passenger Seabourn Odyssey boasts an onboard expedition team and does a posh version of expedition cruising in Alaska, using inflatable Zodiac craft and kayaks.

Seabourn calls its program Ventures by Seabourn. Experts onboard these sailings include naturalists, biologists and other scientists who are members of the expedition team. Once guests finish communing with nature, they can indulge in complimentary Champagne and caviar on board or relish a meal created by famed chef, Thomas Keller.

Best for solo travelers

Solo travelers don’t always have to pay double to cruise Alaska on their own. Several ships feature cabins designed and priced for one. Single cruisers should also note that luxury lines Silversea and Seabourn, while not cheap, do a great job of taking care of single cruisers, hosting them at dinner and providing easy opportunities to meet and mingle with other travelers.

Norwegian Bliss

The ships in Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway and Getaway classes all have cozy studio cabins designed and priced for one person. Additionally, they’re located in a complex where a private lounge encourages mingling. Norwegian Bliss offers 82 solo rooms on its round-trip Seattle cruises that visit Dawes Glacier, Sitka and Icy Strait Point.

Quantum of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s studio staterooms, on its Quantum-class ships in Alaska, give solo travelers the benefits of both decent space and balconies.

On Quantum of the Seas, choose a 101-square-foot inside cabin or a 119-square-foot ocean-view room with a 55-square-foot balcony. Either way, you get a full-size bed and plenty of space for one person. The ship sails a similar weeklong itinerary to sister ship Ovation of the Seas, round-trip from Seattle with scenic sailing along Endicott Arm.

Holland America offers ocean-view accommodations for one in Alaska only on Koningsdam. Measuring 127 to 172 square feet, these rooms come with a full-size bed and a picture window.

Koningsdam sails round trip from Vancouver to Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, with scenic cruising in Tracy Arm and Glacier Bay. Its cruises can be combined into nine- to 14-night cruise tours to the Yukon and Denali.
