For most visitors, the only practical means to get to Oahu is by air. There are no ferries from the continental US to Hawaii.

However, you can opt to join a cruise to Hawaii from Vancouver, San Francisco, or Los Angeles.

Hawaii’s main airport is Honolulu International Airport in Oahu, which is also known as Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

Most visitors to Hawaii arrive here, and the airport handles over 21 million passengers a year. By air, you can reach Oahu from almost anywhere in the world.

If you compare the price of flights on a ticket site like Skyscanner , you’ll find one-way flights from LA for as little as $232, from NYC for $367, and from London for $484.

A popular Polynesian cooking technique is using an earth oven called an imu. Any dishes cooked this way are described as luau.

Luau parties are actually named after this kind of food because it is often served at Hawaiian parties.

A popular luau dish is laulau, which features fish, chicken, or pork wrapped in taro leaves.

These wraps are slow-cooked for hours until the meat grows tender. The resulting delicacy has a smoky taste.

In Oahu, taro is the staple food source. This versatile root crop is often found crushed down into poi, a steamed or baked paste.

Luau and hula hoops

While you’re in Hawaii, it would be a shame not to experience some of the traditional evening entertainments.

You can enjoy a FREE traditional torch lighting, Hawaiian hula show, and blowing of the conch shell at around sunset on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Go to the Kuhio Beach Hula Mound near the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Hotel.

The show starts at 6 pm November through January, 6:30 pm February through October, and lasts for an hour.

If you want a fun-packed evening of laulau food, drinks, traditional songs, and epic stories, go to a traditional luau.

At a luau, you can experience a lei greeting and eat traditional cuisine cooked in an imu while watching indigenous performers perform traditional acts.

Getting Around

However, some hotels charge for their shuttle services, and often those services are limited. Before you set off for the day, ensure you know what your hotel shuttle is going to cost and the timetable.

The public bus service in Oahu is literally called The Bus.

There are mixed opinions about The Bus, with some travelers finding the service great for getting around the island, but others complaining about crowding and slow services.

The Bus does provide 93 routes around the island with an astounding 4,200 stops. You can go anywhere on The Bus!

You pay cash on the bus or purchase a bus pass. You can buy a 1-day pass on the bus for $5.50.

When traveling, keep an eye out for your destination. To stop The Bus, you must pull the cord in advance.

You can easily hire a car at the airport, though some rental companies require drivers to be over 25.

However, note that parking in Honolulu and Waikiki is difficult.

Traffic all around the island gets congested during the busy winter months. And speed limits are lower than in the continental US and strictly enforced.

Because of the problems with parking, congestion, and navigation, you’ll find it easiest to explore the island on a tour where the tour operator provides the transport.

You won’t have the same flexibility as when you rent a car, but you’ll get where you need to go with less hassle.

Taxis and Uber

Taxis in Oahu can be expensive, and they’re difficult to find outside of the main urban area. Hailing taxis isn’t common practice in Hawaii.

However, Uber and Lyft can often offer more affordable solutions to your travel problems.

Accommodations

Most accommodations for tourists in Oahu are found in Waikiki. But you can also find a range of accommodations in Leeward Waianae, along North Shore, and Windward East.

Premier hotel brands, such as Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and Sheraton, are found around Waikiki.

Business-class hotels are clustered around the downtown and airport areas of Honolulu.

Prince Waikiki is the top-rated hotel in Honolulu on TripAdvisor and is also highly rated on Booking.com and Google.

Prince Waikiki is a modern and stylish luxury hotel with an infinity pool, wall-to-ceiling windows, and a popular rooftop bar.

If you’re working to a tight budget, you can also find cheaper hotels in this area.

The Inn On The Park in Waikiki offers low rates and free parking, which is useful if you intend to rent a car.

And the Ambassador Hotel is also affordable, though it does have relatively low ratings on both Google and TripAdvisor.

Leeward Waianae

The Makana Valley area contains a luxury resort, championship golf course, and a few vacation rentals.

The Hawaiian Princess Resort is highly rated and offers great surfing conditions in a much quieter setting than Waikiki.

North Shore

This area mainly offers B&Bs and vacation homes, though there is a major resort at Turtle Bay.

The Turtle Bay Resort is situated in a stunning location on a peninsula overlooking the bay. If you love snorkeling and turtles, it’s a great place to stay.

Windward East

This is a residential area, and the accommodations in this area are mainly vacation homes.

The weather in Oahu doesn’t fluctuate much over the year. There are really only two seasons: winter and summer. Most of the rain falls during the summer.

And there is only around an hour’s difference in sunrise and sunset times between midsummer and midwinter.

Generally, the leeward (west) side of the island is drier than the windward (east) side. This is why the eastern coast is greener than the west.

The hurricane season is from June to November, though bad hurricanes are rare.

The coldest winter month is February, with an average daily high of 78 0 F and a low of 63 0 F. By May, temperatures have risen to an average high of 81 0 F and low of 67 0 F.

August is the hottest month of the summer, with an average high of 85 0 F and a low of 71 0 F. By November, the average high drops to 81 0 F and the low to 68 0 F.

Oahu boasts many iconic attractions that make it the most visited of the Hawaiian Islands.

Royal Palaces

Honolulu boasts 2 authentic royal palaces!

The more sumptuous of the 2 is the Iolani Palace . It was built in 1882 for King Kalakaua and became the official residence of the Hawaiian Royal Family.

In recent years, the palace has been lovingly restored. Docent-led tours of the grand halls and opulent rooms are available.

Queen Emma Summer Palace (Hanaiakamalama) was built as a summer retreat in 1857.

This house is a museum filled with displays of the personal possessions of Queen Emma, her husband King Kamehameha, and their son Prince Albert Edward.

You can enjoy a self-guided or docent-guided tour of this royal residence.

Pearl Harbor

While you’re in Oahu, it’s only polite to pay your respects to the servicemen who lost their lives to defend your freedom here during WWII. The Arizona Memorial draws 1.8 million visitors each year.

The USS Missouri (WWII battleship) and USS Bowfin (WWII submarine) are permanently anchored in the harbor.

You can explore these nautical relics and learn about sailors’ lives during the war. You can also visit the Pacific Aviation Museum.

Diamond Head

You can’t not notice Diamond Head while you’re strolling along Waikiki Beach. The Diamond Head Trail is a great way to explore the volcanic cone that dominates the Honolulu skyline.

Although there are some steep sections, and it looks daunting, the hike to the summit is easier than it looks. It only takes between 40 to 60 minutes for the average hiker.

From the top, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean.

Waimea Falls

This waterfall at the back of the Waimea Valley is relatively easy to reach. The 15-feet waterfall is surrounded by botanical gardens, and you’re allowed to swim in its plunge pool.

The Waimea Falls trail is only ¾ miles long. Your whole family can follow the paved path that passes important archaeological sites to reach the waterfall.

And if your walk leaves you hungry, you can find the Na Mea Ono Snack Bar at the visitors center.

Waikiki Aquarium

Your whole family will love the Waikiki Aquarium. Inside you’ll find 3,500 species of marine life native to Hawaii, including crabs, jellyfish, sea horses, octopus, squid, sharks, and seals.

You’ll find the aquarium across from Kapiolani Park near San Souci Beach. It’s a great place to see all of Hawaii’s marine life in one place.

Polynesian Cultural Center

This is a great attraction for anyone fascinated by Hawaiian culture.

The center demonstrates traditional music, dances, food, and other traditions. But it’s not only limited to Hawaiian culture.

The center features 7 separate villages each representing a different region of the South Pacific. You can learn about all Polynesian cultures at the Polynesian Cultural Center .

6. Pearl Harbor USS Arizona Memorial Tour

For many Americans, a visit to Pearl Harbor is a must on a first-time Oahu itinerary.

This is where the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941, drawing the US into World War II. Thousands lost their lives. Many US warships (and hundreds of aircraft) were destroyed in the attack.

At the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, you can pay your respects at the USS Arizona Memorial, a pristine white structure that sits in the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean directly over the spot where the sunken ship lies.

With its spectacular blue-green waters and picturesque offshore islets, Kailua Bay is one of the most scenic destinations on Oahu.

If you’d rather visit on your own, you can rent a kayak . It takes 45 to 60 minutes to paddle each way, and you have to check tide times in advance to make sure you’ll be there when the sandbar is exposed.

Best Oahu Island Luaus

You can’t visit Hawaii without an authentic Hawaiian Celebration! Traditional dancing, as well as food, are a great way to experience an authentic Hawaiian Luau. Every Hawaiian Luau is different but is based on the same traditions.

Good food is a must for a Luau. Typically you will see things like Kalua Pua (roasted pig), Haupia (a desert food), and Hawaiian sweet bread (among other traditional foods). Since a Luau is one of many traditional Oahu activities, it only makes sense that the food is prepared traditionally. 

Using an Imu (an underground oven) to cook some of the food is a fun touch for visitors to experience. Not to mention the entertainment. Hula dancing is a beautiful show to enjoy with all of that food.

Swimming with Dolphins

Who doesn’t love these incredibly fun and beautifully playful creatures? Dolphins are a part of the stunning marine life that calls Oahu home. Sharing their beauty and magnificence with visitors has been a long-time tradition for native Hawaii. 

That is why it is one of our most popular Oahu Tours.

Out of all of the Oahu excursions and activities available to you , don’t pass up the opportunity to snorkel with dolphins. Getting to see spinner dolphins playing with each other happily in their natural habitat is a completely unique experience.

Snorkeling with Turtles on Oahu

Snorkeling is a magnificent experience if you have never done it before. If you have, then you know just how amazing it truly feels to swim with stunning sea creatures and to see them in their natural habitat. Even if you have been to an aquarium and have seen the tropical fish and marine mammals, there is no comparison to the mesmerizing experience of seeing them firsthand in the water. 

When snorkeling with sea turtles it is important to follow whatever rules that the guide gives you in order to keep these gentle giants safe and relaxed. Make sure to keep your distance, and never touch or feed one of the sea turtles. They are a federally protected species so we need to always remember to be mindful when in the water with them. Location and Geography of Oahu

For those of you who have just started considering Oahu for your next trip destination but don't know much about the area, here's all you need to know about the island's location and geographic layout. 

Oahu is the third-largest Hawaiian island and is home to numerous Hawaiian hotspots, including the state's capital, Honolulu, located on the island's southeastern tip. Also referred to as "The Gathering Place," Oahu is home to nearly one million people and nearly two-thirds of Hawaii's overall population. 

In terms of location within Hawaii, Oahu is a significantly sized island with   597 square miles that lies between Kauai and Moloka'i. The island measures roughly 44 miles long and 30 miles across with a 227 mile-long shoreline . Two large shield volcano mountain ranges dominate this island: Waiʻanae in the west and Koʻolau in the east. These locations are perfect for avid hikers and mountaineers while providing one of the island's most profound views. 

In the middle of these ranges is the Oahu Plain, and the highest point of the island is Kaʻala in the Waiʻanae Range. This peak rises to 4,003 feet above sea level and is one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes on the island. 

Oahu's most populated regions are found on the northwestern coast, known as the "North Shore," and the southeastern coast near Honolulu. The middle of the island is dominated by vegetation, mountain ranges, and other natural wonders.

Some might not recognize the name Oahu, but most individuals, particularly Americans, will recognize Pearl Harbor. The Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service's surprise attack on this U.S. naval base on December 7, 1941, sparked the United States forces joining the conflict of World War II.

This attack astounded United States citizens and government officials, both for its suddenness and its devastating repercussion. In less than two hours, with two attack waves, Japanese forces :

• destroyed or damaged nearly 20 American naval vessels, eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. 
• More than 2,400 Americans died, including civilians.
• 1,000 people were wounded.

Things You Should Know Before Traveling to Oahu

As is true with any location, there are some things you should know before you travel to Oahu. These facts can help ensure you are more prepared to travel the region and know what to expect when you arrive.  

It's Not All Sunshine and Rainbows

As the rainbow state, you're likely to expect lots of sunshine and some light precipitation anywhere in Hawaii. Although Oahu is certainly sunny the majority of the time, travelers should still pack for rain before they arrive. 

On average, Honolulu, Oahu experiences about 22 inches of rainfall annually and 1.8 inches per month. This might not sound like a lot of rain compared to other regions, but this precipitation frequently occurs over the year, where around 197.2 days will experience some degree of precipitation. The amount of rainfall increases exponentially during the rainy season that lasts from October to March.

At one point, this island even held the record for the longest rain shower in history, where it rained for 247 consecutive days in 1993-94 . Therefore, you might not need to pack with the expectation of heavy thundershowers throughout your trip, but it would be a good idea to bring a quality rain jacket and water-resistant boots when visiting Oahu. 

Leave the Compass at Home

If you were expecting to have an easy time getting around Oahu with just a map and basic compass directions, you're in for a surprise. 

Navigating on Oahu can be so difficult due to its geographic layout that most locals won't provide directions in terms of those on a compass but in terms of where well-known landmarks are found on the island in relation to the central point of Honolulu. For instance:

• Ewa means towards the western tip of the island
• Diamond Head means towards the eastern tip of the island
• Mauka means inland towards the Koʻolau Mountain range
• Makai means towards the sea
• So, if you are thinking about pulling a local aside for directions, know that you might not receive them in a manner you're used to and will need to adopt some native Hawaiian vocabulary to get around.  

There's Plenty of People in Paradise

Some travelers might assume that since Oahu is an island, there can't possibly be that many people there. If you were expecting to stay somewhere low-key where you can find stretches of beach all to yourself, Oahu might not be the best option, especially if you're staying in Honolulu.

As we stated previously, Honolulu is the state capital of Hawaii and has a pretty significant population of natives alone. Add that to the thousands of tourists that choose this island for their vacation site, and you have one of the most high-traffic cities in the state. 

Honolulu is teeming with tourists, which can easily put a damper on your trip if you don't know how to avoid the crowds. These large numbers, along with the native population, means there's usually a substantial amount of traffic in the cities, hotels, and resorts line the beaches where residence will congest the ocean and shores, and public spaces, such as parking, are highly competitive and difficult to come by. 

Although Honolulu is certainly a sight to see, if you prefer some privacy and tranquility on your trip to Oahu, we suggest you avoid staying within the city if you can. 

Look Before You Leap

With all the beautiful beaches and ocean water surrounding the island, it can be extremely tempting to jump in at any given point, especially if you've just been on a long hike and want to cool off from your efforts. However, a lot of water spots surrounding the island shores can be deceiving.

Locations, such as Makapuu Beach in southeast Oahu, are particularly dangerous and should be left to only the most experienced of swimmers. This beach has a strong shore break with a steep drop-off in the seafloor and swirling offshore currents that could easily cause injury or drown any unprepared swimmer. 

There are countless locations around Oahu that don safety flags and are under the careful supervision of lifeguards. The beaches might be crowded with tourists, but at least they are safe. If you do come across a tempting water spot, try to at least moderately research the area before you dive-in. It could save your life.

The ʻIolani Palace: 

Believe it or not, at one point, royalty ruled in Hawaii, and in Oahu, you can visit the 'Iolani Palace where the rulers of the Kingdom of Hawaii resided. This reign began with Kamehameha III under the Kamehameha Dynasty and ended with Queen Liliʻuokalani under the Kalākaua Dynasty in 1893. 

The palace is fully restored and open to the public as a museum located in downtown Honolulu's capital district. Guests can embark on several tours and learn about the palace's architecture and history, along with its fascinating connection to Hawaiian culture and politics. 

Polynesian Cultural Center

Waimea Valley

However, despite being much more private and serene, this beach is still relatively close to Honolulu's hub if you happen to be staying in this region and just want to get away for a quick trip to a quiet beach. 

Diamond Head State Monument

A truly unique location in Oahu, many hikers and everyday travelers will visit the Diamond Head State Monument. This volcanic cone is located in one of Oahu's most popular state parks and is part of the Ko'olau Range. 

These volcanoes began erupting below sea level over 2.6 million years ago , but the tuff cone crater of Diamond Head, which encompasses 350 acres, was formed explosively. 

At an elevation of 762 feet above sea level and 560 feet tall from the crater floor, the Diamond Head Mountain is one of Oahu's most popular and scenic hiking locations. Visitors will also traverse this region for its military history.  

The Diamond Head Crater was purchased by the U.S. government in 1905 , where they developed Fort Ruger to strengthen the nation's coast artillery defense. Various forms of defense, including batteries and guns, were installed throughout the 720-acre crater, and the fort was further developed following World War II.

Visitors can still see some of the fort's installments, such as Battery 407 and various bunkers and tunnels that are no longer in use.

Honolulu Hawaii Experience 4D/3N

Bamba Travel was the only tour operator which responded and agreed to help me plan my tour in Hawaii. Although I would have liked a more thoroughly organised tour like pick up from the cruise terminal and transport to the Kualoa ranch organised, I had to take the public bus by myself. It was a bit daunting but Bamba gave me some instructions. At Hawaii it quite easy and safe to take public transport during the day. Bamba was helpful at every step. A bit slow with regards to correspondence bec of time differences as they are in the USA but they would respond daily. We loved the tour! The hotels/resorts overall were good. We didn’t always get the best view & some of the meals were not great. The Outrigger, in Honolulu, was very nice! Good food, nice room, but we did not have an ocean view. We found out from some of our tour guests, that we could have upgraded, to an ocean view. We were never informed of this! Pearl Harbor was great, however, I wish the tour included the Missouri. Both my husband & I could have spent more time there. Our best accommodation was at the Outrigger, on the Big Island, however the meals (including the Luau) left a lot to be desired. Our room was perfect, along with the pool. Convenient to eat offsite!!! The Volcano National Park tour was perfect!!! My favorite tour! We loved Maui, however our ocean view was ground level, & could not view the pool, or beach, because the cabanas blocked the view. Strange bathroom layout! We like a dressing/vanity area separate from the shower & commode. Food at the Sheraton was excellent!!!, along with other choice restaurants to choose from! Our tour directer, Lisa Beardsley was the best!!!..so kind, knowledgeable & fun to be with!!! She truly went above & beyond to cater to everyone’s needs! The arrangements, island hopping, check-ins, excursion meeting times…All over planning was excellent! Thank you Tour Radar & Globus for a memorable experience!

The winter is one of the best times to visit Oahu. That’s because you’ll be able to witness the amazing humpback whale migration! During this time, more than 10,000 whales make the long journey down to the islands from Alaska to breed and raise their young (the waters are much warmer around Hawaii than they are up north!). 

If you’re heading to Oahu and want to witness this incredible spectacle for yourself, there are many whale watching tours where you can get up close to these beautiful creatures. There are private yacht charters, group speed boat tours, and everything else in between, which can make choosing the right tour difficult.

When is the oahu whale watching season.

Most whales start arriving in Hawaii around December (but there have been some years where they show up as early as September). The season usually wraps up around March, which is when the majority of pods head back up north. However, we have also spotted them around the islands in May, so the season, in general, is quite flexible! But always during Hawaii’s winter.

What time of day is best for whale watching on Oahu?

During peak season, it’s possible to see whales any time of the day, as they are always active. Therefore, it doesn’t really matter if you choose a morning, afternoon, or even a sunset tour to see them.

But in general, you’ll find that most companies operate tours in the morning. This is a good time to go, as the temperatures are a tad cooler, and you won’t be directly in the sun the whole time. Morning is also before the trade winds pick up, so the boat ride will be smoother and more enjoyable (especially if you’re prone to seasickness). 

What month is best for whale watching on Oahu?

As we mentioned, peak whale season changes year by year, so it’s hard to say exactly what month has the best whale watching opportunities. If you’re planning your vacation around this, you can consult the official Sanctuary Whale Watching Count . The count is conducted during the peak season to keep track of how many whales are spotted off the Hawaiian Islands.

In 2023, the highest number of whales was recorded in March. But in 2022, the best month for sightings was in January. 

But even if you don’t go during the month with the highest numbers, you might still be lucky enough to see several on your tour! Because, as we said, they can be spotted earlier or later than peak seasons. Take a deep dive on the best time for whale watching in Hawaii.

What is the best place to see whales on Oahu?

Whales live in the water, so the best place to see them is by taking a boat tour. If you prefer to stay on land, then don’t worry. There are still a few places around Oahu where you can see them from shore.

One of the best spots on the island is up at the North Shore . Shark’s Cove , Turtle Bay, and La’ie Point are all great places to see the majestic creatures playing in the water.

If you’re down south, then you also have tons of seaside locations for viewings. Makapu’u Lighthouse is one of our favorites (it’s also a nice hike with a beautiful lookout over the ocean). You can also try Halona Blowhole, Spitting Caves, and Lana’i Lookout – all of which are just a short drive from one another along the southeastern coast.

How much is a whale watching tour on Oahu?

The price of a whale watching tour on Oahu depends on multiple factors, including the number of people in your party, the length of your tour, and the type of vessel you’re traveling in. With this in mind, the average cost for one person is around $100 – $150. However, we’ve seen some Oahu tour companies offer shorter whale watching tours for about $60 a person, which is a great deal if you’re on a budget!

Another option is to hire a private charter. While this is more expensive than a shared whale watching tour, it can make more financial sense if you’re traveling with a large group or with lots of family members. While the cost of a private charter also varies from company to company, we’ve seen them as low as $400 for 1 to 4 people and upwards of $2,500 for larger boats and groups. 

Is a whale watching tour worth it on Oahu?

Oahu is a really fun island to visit (especially if it’s your first time in Hawaii). But the truth is, it’s not the best island for whale watching. It doesn’t get as many whales as Maui , which has the highest recorded number of whales out of all the Hawaiian Islands.

There’s a better chance of seeing whales on a boat tour than if you were to just watch them from shore. But keep in mind that you might not see any at all. This can be a big disappointment if you have your heart set on seeing whales. But if you go with lower expectations, the leisurely boat ride can be a wonderful experience on its own.

We also wanted to make you’re aware that boats aren’t allowed to drive directly into the area where the whales are. State and federal law require them to keep at least 100 yards back. For this reason, most tours will go close to the pods but turn off their engines. This isn’t a big deal, as you’ll be able to see those giants from that distance anyway! Plus wild animals know no bounds so curious whales may approach the boat, giving you an exhilarating close encounter.

And You Creations

The early morning whale-watching tour hosted by And You Creations is an affordable option if you’re staying in or around Waikiki. Departing from Kewalo Boat Harbor (roughly 2.5 miles from downtown Waikiki), this 2.5-hour cruise is on a powerful double-decker boat for sightseeing. As you travel past Waikiki Beach towards Diamond Head, you’ll get to enjoy stunning coastal views while you search for swimming and breaching whales.

We like this tour because it also includes a Hawaiian plumeria flower ceremony and whale-watching chant. The crew also performs authentic hula and dance songs to keep everyone onboard occupied in between sightings, which is great if you’re traveling with kids. 

When whales are nearby, the nature specialist will drop the hydrophone into the ocean so you can hear them singing their songs! They’re also there to help answer any questions you have about the whales (or other visible marine life creatures, for that matter).

Tours leave bright and early at 7 AM. And don’t worry about breakfast! Tickets include morning beverages as well as breakfast pastries.

Dolphin Excursions

Ditch the crowds and enjoy this 15-person (max!) tour as you look for whales around Waikiki. We particularly love this tour by Dolphin Excursions because you also have the opportunity to get off the boat to snorkel! Snorkel gear and life vests are provided for those who want to swim with tropical fish, green sea turtles, and possibly dolphins. Back on board, the marine naturalist will share insight into all the creatures you see during your tour. 

This is an afternoon excursion that leaves around 2:30 PM and lasts for 3 hours. Boats leave from Waianae Boat Harbor, which is around a 25-minute drive from Ko Olina Resorts . If you prefer a more intimate experience, private charters can also be booked just for your group.

And most importantly, Dolphin Excursions guarantees whale sightings while you’re out. If you don’t see any during your outing, they’ll give you a return trip voucher for a future journey completely free of charge!

Bob Marlin Charters Oahu

A private whale-watching charter is an incredible experience. With Bob Marlin Charters Oahu , you can have the open waters practically to yourself as you cruise around the island on your 32ʻ Luhrs Express. It’s an awesome opportunity to see whales and surprisingly more affordable than you might think – we’re talking starting at $400 for groups up to 4 people!

Because this is a private charter, you get to choose the start time that works best for your group out of 5-time slots. Leave first thing at 7 AM, enjoy a leisurely lunch sail, or admire the colorful sunset from a 4 PM journey. All trips last two hours, so keep that in mind when booking.

This trip leaves from Haleiwa Harbor, so it’s best if you’re staying somewhere on the North Shore . But if your tour starts later, you can still make your way up from Waikiki. It’s worth the drive, considering that the North Shore has more whale sightings than any other part of the island!

Honolulu Snorkel Company

Hop aboard Honolulu Snorkel Company’s 40-foot catamaran for a memorable sail across the Oahu coastline. This 1.5-hour tour is ideal if you’re short on time and want to make the most of it on Oahu. Although you’re not on the water for as long as some other whale watching tours, you’ll still get to see humpbacks, as well as other marine life like turtles, flying fish, and dolphins!

Tickets are more affordable than other excursions, which means you can still go whale watching even if you’re on a tight budget! And young kids are more than welcome as long as they are over 5 years old.

Tours leave twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays at 3 PM and depart from the Kewalo Boat Harbor outside of Waikiki.

Deep Blue Eco Tours

The whale watching tours with Deep Blue Eco Tours is another fantastic option for those staying on the North Shore. Departing from Haleiwa Boat Harbor, they offer shared and private tours for pretty reasonable prices.

If you’re joining a shared tour, you’ll only be on the boat with a maximum of 5 other guests. Having such a small group is a great way to see and photograph the whales up close and personal. But if you’d rather enjoy a VIP experience, you can also charter a boat for your group (also a maximum of 6 people total).

All tours last for two hours. Depending on the date, you can choose from one of five different start times: 8 AM, 10 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM, or 4 PM. 

The Adventure Boat (Private Charter)

Take a wild ride on the Adventure Boat and across the entire southern coast of Oahu! On this high-speed inflatable Zodiac boat, you’ll be able to see more and cover more miles as you zip through the Pacific Ocean looking for whales.

This is a private charter company, so it will just be you and your group out on the open waters. This is a great opportunity to get a knowledgeable guide all to yourself – and the whales, of course! You can choose to book for up to 6, 9, or 12 people (prices vary depending on how many people are on board). 

Light refreshments are served during the trip, although you’re more than welcome to bring any food or snacks if you crave something more. The Adventure Boat operates tours from December to April and at three times during the day. You can book your tour at 8 AM, 11 AM, or 2 PM.

Honolulu Sailing Company (Private Charter)

For a truly memorable experience, look no further than a trip with the Honolulu Sailing Company . Instead of a crammed boat with other tourists, you’ll be relaxing in style as you glide across the ocean on a private yacht! 

As these are completely private charters, you’ll be allowed to book the vessel of your choice. Set sail on the Beneteau 42 Gauguin, the Beneteau 48 Gauguin, or the extra luxurious Beneteau Sense 50′ Tefiti (each yacht can accommodate parties of up to 6). They also have shaded deck lounges, so there’s plenty of room for everyone to sprawl out and find a front-row seat to the action.

Cruises last for three hours and can be booked starting at 8 AM, 11 AM or 2 PM. Make sure to bring your own snacks and drinks, as it makes the entire journey that much more enjoyable!

Hawaii Ocean Charters (Private Charter)

Set out on a 30′ catamaran with up to 6 guests. You’ll have a ton of space to spread out and enjoy unobstructed views as whales breach and play.

The luxury catamaran is a comfortable and smooth ride, making it a great choice if you suffer from motion sickness. Shaded cabin seating and on board bathrooms are available throughout your trip. A knowledgeable and experienced crew will give you the best chance of finding whales on your adventure! You also get the chance to snorkel at an offshore reef commonly home to sea turtles and tropical fish. 

Tours are 2-4 hours (your choice) departing at 9:30 am, 11:45 am, and 2:00 pm daily. You have the option to bring your own snacks and BYOB or you can have your charter catered.

Whale Watching on Oahu Tips

As you prepare for your whale watching tour, there are a couple of things to keep in mind to enhance your magical marine experience. 

• Book a tour with a sighting guarantee .  Because whales are wild animals, it’s hard to predict exactly where they’ll be around the island. For this reason, it’s possible you might not get to see them on your tour. However, some companies will put you on another boat if you don’t see them on the trip. While there aren’t many companies on Oahu that offer this, it can make a huge difference if you’re arriving early or later in the whale watching season.
• Do your first tour earlier during your vacation. If you do book with a company that guarantees whale sightings, then you’ll need a few extra days to rebook if you need a second outing. Therefore, you shouldn’t wait until the end of your trip to book your tour, or else you won’t be able to take advantage of this offer. 
• Go on a morning tour. While this depends on your personal preference, we think morning tours are the best time to be out on the water. Not only are the waters calmer (the tradewinds usually pick up in the afternoon), but fewer boats and crowds are looking for whales. It’s also much cooler in the morning, which is great if you don’t want to be baking in the sun for hours at a time!
• Choose the right boat. As you can see from the different types of tours above, many different types of vessels go out to see whales. Knowing which boat you want can significantly impact the type of trip you have. For example, smaller power rafts are fun and fast, but they’re not suitable for young kids, pregnant women, or people with injuries. In these situations, larger vessels or sailboats are usually the better choice!
