Disney leak included personal information for some cruise line workers: report

Disney leak included data from internal slack messaging app about customers, staff.

Information leaked from the Walt Disney Company earlier this summer includes passport numbers of cruise line workers, revenue generated from Disney+ and Genie+ (now Lightning Lane) and guest data.

Back in July, Nullbulge – a self-proclaimed Russia-based hacktivist group that advocates for artists' rights – uploaded 1.1 terabyte of Disney data to the internet from the media giant's internal Slack channels.

Slack is a messaging app for business used by many major companies, especially as work shifted to hybrid and remote roles following the COVID-19 pandemic. The software can be used on computers and smartphones.

"Consider the dropping of literally every bit of personal info you have, from logins to credit cards to SSN, as a warning for people in the future," Nullbulge's website says about the Disney leak.

The hacktivist group says they only hack "if you have committed one of our sins," which it lists as crypto promotion, AI artwork and any form of theft.

Disney did not immediately respond to a FOX Business request for comment, but a spokesman previously told The Wall Street Journal it declines to comment on "unverified information The Wall Street Journal has purportedly obtained as a result of a bad actor’s illegal activity."

A spreadsheet about Genie+, the premium park pass launched in 2021, showed generation of $724 million in pretax revenue between October 2021 and June 2024 at Walt Disney World alone, the WSJ reported.

Internal spreadsheets also showed Disney+, the company's streaming entertainment app, generated more than $2.4 billion in the first quarter of the year.

Passport numbers, visa details, places of birth, physical addresses and current assignments of Disney staff aboard the company's cruises were also revealed from the Slack channels, the WSJ states.

The WSJ says back in August, Disney told investors in a regulatory filing that it was investigating the leak, but the incident had not had a material impact on operations or financial performance and the company did not expect that it would.

Nullbulge's access to the data came from the compromised computer of a manager of software development, according to the WSJ.

"Companies are getting breached all the time, especially data theft from the cloud and software-as-a-service platforms," Roei Sherman, field CTO at Mitiga Security, told Wired tech magazine.

Introducing Our Disney Cruise Line Youth Activities Counselors

Imagine spending every day inside Andy’s toy box, sprinkling a bit of pixie dust in Stars Hallow, or learning strength and courage with your favorite Avengers. For the Disney Cruise Line youth activities counselors, this is just your average day onboard our ships!

As youth activities counselors, these crew members interact and supervise young guests while providing engaging activities that will create magical memories to last a lifetime. We reached out across the high seas to ask four of them about their time with Disney Cruise Line, why they love what they do, and of course, to share some magical moments. Today we’re introducing you to these four great crew members, but stay tuned to the blog for a closer look at each of their stories!

cruise staff disney cruise line

First, meet Kenia from Cancun, Mexico. She chose to be a youth activities counselor because she loves seeing children smile and believes you can always learn from these young guests. She walked us through what a day in the life of a youth activities counselor looks like.

“My role is to make magic for all the children and make every single one feel special. My day starts with checking children into the Oceaneer Lab, greeting them, and introducing them to their group leader. Each child wears an Oceaneer band to ensure that we have all the information needed to take care of them and ensure they feel comfortable in the spaces.  Once I verify all the information with the children’s parents while working at the front desk, I go and play with the children that are assigned in my group. I engage them in interactive activities, games, and Disney-inspired crafts. I make sure they have a great time and leave the Oceaneer Club with a smile, lots of crafts, and most importantly, memories that will last forever.”

She also noted that safety is always top of mind as she interacts with guests and other crew members.

“I am always aware of my surroundings, whether it’s engaging children in an activity in the Oceaneer Club or walking in crew areas. Safety is always the top priority when working with Disney Cruise Line, and it is every crew member’s responsibilities to take care of the safety of our guests and safety of my fellow crew members.”

Next is Luis from Portugal, a youth activities counselor who never imagined he could be working with Disney and now sees his dream coming true. After achieving a degree in tourism recreation and gaining experience working at summer camps and in the tourism industry with young guests, he saw an advertisement for working with Disney Cruise Line, and thinking it was a shot in the dark, applied. A few days later, he had an interview, and he has been making magic ever since!

One moment, in particular, stands out for Luis. “I will never forget this – it was magical indeed. On the second week on board of the Disney Fantasy, I was on the Oceaneer Club side in the Star Wars room, checking if the children were having fun, and out of nowhere, a six-year-old girl came from Pixie Hollow running and screaming ‘Luis, Luis – I made this for you!’ It was a drawing of her and me with our names and saying thank you with a heart. It meant so much to me because it was my first time far, far away from home, and in a totally different world. It made me so happy that I even cried tears of joy!”

cruise staff disney cruise line

Also making magic as a youth activities counselor is Gouwa. From South Africa, Gouwa was watching a television program where they were showcasing Disney Cruise Line, and she just knew that she was destined to join the crew. “My heart skipped a beat, and I knew that I wanted to join the Disney Cruise Line team and experience the amazing adventures onboard.”

Not only does she enjoy her role onboard, but she loves the many other benefits of working for Disney Cruise Line. “I feel proud to have the honor of wearing a Disney Cruise Line costume and to be part of the Disney Cruise Line team. I love the fact that they look out for the crew and do fun activities for us. I love that I get to see Mickey and friends walking around the ship – it puts a big smile on my face and makes me feel good and excited to be part of the Disney Cruise Line team! There is so much to learn and experience with Disney Cruise Line, and I would love to grow within the company.”

cruise staff disney cruise line

Last but not least, let’s meet Logan. Logan is from London, England, and couldn’t pass up the chance to work with a company he has always admired and travel the world at the same time. “What I like the most about working for Disney Cruise Line is the fast-paced lifestyle. It’s a wild journey, and it’s forever changing, but nothing will ever compare to waking up in a new place each and every day.”

Within Disney Cruise Line, the youth activities counselor role stood out to him because of the impact he knew he could have on a guest’s experience while onboard and in the memories they would take home with them.

“I chose the Youth Activities role because I want to create the most magical experiences for children. Think back to your favorite vacations as a child – who and what made them memorable? The people who interacted with you, right? I want to be that person who does even the smallest gesture that will change how a child will treat others and who in years to come will think back to and remember their vacation time with. Also, I mean, we have the coolest space on the entire ship – who wouldn’t love to play all day?!”

Now that you’ve met these four crew members, keep an eye here on the Life at Disney blog for a closer look at each of their stories! We’ll be sharing more about each crew member: their personal journeys, the impact they’ve made in their areas, and the magical moments they’ve shared with guests.

Disney Data Breach Included Disneyland Guest Information, Genie+ Revenue Details

D isney data leaked in a hack earlier this summer included Disney Cruise Line crew member passport numbers, Disney Cruise Line and Disneyland Resort guest contact information, Genie+ revenue details, and more.

Disney Data Breach

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) viewed some of the 1.1TB worth of files that were compromised by Russia-based hacktivist group Nullbulge in July. Nullbulge obtained data from Disney’s internal Slack platform and, according to WSJ, shared more than 44 million messages, 18,800 spreadsheets, and 13,000 PDFs.

Among the files were granular revenue details about Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu. The Walt Disney Company does not publicly disclose streaming service revenue but spreadsheets indicate Disney+ generated over $2.4 billion in the second quarter of 2024 . That accounts for about 43% of the company’s revenue for direct-to-consumer entertainment.

Another spreadsheet details revenue from Disney Genie+, now known as Lightning Lane Multi Pass . According to the file, Genie+ at Walt Disney World generated over $724 million in pretax revenue between its October 2021 launch and June 2024.

Other data includes information about ad operations. These include spending by politicians on Disney platforms and debate over whether to approve ad campaigns by Netflix and other rivals.

One spreadsheet contained the names and contact information of some Disneyland Resort guests with dining reservations. Another included names, addresses, and phone numbers of Disney Cruise Line passengers.

Passport numbers, visa details, places of birth, physical addresses, and current assignments of Disney Cruise Line staff members were also leaked.

The data included staff reactions to Disney’s clash with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis regarding the Parental Rights in Education law (a.k.a. the “Don’t Say Gay” law).

Slack is just one platform Disney uses for internal communication and no private messages between executives were included in the hack.

A Disney spokesperson said, “We decline to comment on unverified information The Wall Street Journal has purportedly obtained as a result of a bad actor’s illegal activity.”

In an August regulatory filing, Disney told investors they were investigating the unauthorized release of data but that the incident had not affected and likely would not impact their operations or financial performance.

Though Nullbulge uploaded the Disney data, security researchers believe the hack was the work of a single individual in the U.S. Nullbulege claimed in a direct message on X that they accessed the data through a company manager of software development whose computer they compromised.

After sailing with all 5 Disney cruise ships, there's only one I'd consider traveling on again

  • My family and I have sailed on all five Disney Cruise Line ships, but Disney Fantasy is my favorite.
  • I love the Fantasy-exclusive venues, including a vintage-themed ice cream shop .
  • Disney Fantasy also has five European-inspired nightclubs, lounges, and bars.

Insider Today

My family and I have sailed on all five Disney Cruise Line (DCL) ships. Although each ship offers a unique experience, there's only one I'd consider traveling on again: Disney Fantasy.

The ship, which debuted in 2012, has 14 decks and some of my favorite onboard activities, including the AquaDuck water coaster and five adults-only lounges.

Here are some of the reasons I'd travel on Disney Fantasy again.

Disney Fantasy's size is just right.

cruise staff disney cruise line

The 1,115-foot-long Fantasy is larger than the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, which are both 984 feet long and have 11 decks.

However, Disney Fantasy's separate family and adult areas make it easy to be entertained in a sea of up to 4,000 people. I love relaxing with a handful of guests in the cozy cafés and nooks or sunbathing in solitude.

I love the Fantasy-exclusive venues.

cruise staff disney cruise line

Each DCL ship has exclusives you won't find on other ships in its fleet, including restaurants and adults-only lounges.

For example, Disney Fantasy has Sweet on You, a vintage-themed ice-cream shop and confectionery inspired by classic Mickey Mouse shorts.

Other exclusives on Disney Fantasy include a Bvlgari shop and a trio of nightlife spots: Italian-style La Piazza bar, British nightclub The Tube, and French Champagne bar Ooh La La.

There's more aquatic fun on Disney Fantasy than most DLC ships.

cruise staff disney cruise line

Disney Fantasy has seven freshwater pools and water-play areas, including three family pools, two adult pools, and two splash areas. The only ship with more pools and water-play areas is Disney Wish, which has 10.

One of my favorite activities is the AquaDuck water coaster.

cruise staff disney cruise line

The AquaDuck, which is only found on this ship and Disney Dream, is a 765-foot water coaster that propels passengers in two-person rafts through a massive transparent tube.

The ride includes open-air portions that offer views of the ocean and a stomach-dropping four-deck drop.

The adults-only lounges have unique European themes.

cruise staff disney cruise line

Disney Fantasy has five European-inspired nightclubs, lounges, and bars located in one area called Europa. The Tube is a London Underground-themed venue, Ooh La La is themed around Champagne, O'Gill's is an Irish pub, and La Piazza has an Italian feel.

I also love the quiet but mesmerizing Skyline bar, which features changing "windows" of famous city skylines.

The Europa theme seamlessly flows from one venue to the next, and I love having the ability to barhop in one specific area of the ship.

I'm a fan of the ship's more subdued dining experiences.

cruise staff disney cruise line

Some Disney fans may prefer entertaining dining experiences, but I appreciate the more subdued dinners on Disney Fantasy.

I don't have children , so I appreciate being able to enjoy the Disney vibes without sitting through the over-the-top dinner dramas found on other ships.

I love visiting restaurants like the princess-themed Royal Court and the French-garden-themed Enchanted Garden. My favorite, however, is Animator's Palate, which celebrates Disney animation and is on every ship except Disney Wish.

I love relaxing in the Rainforest inside Senses Spa.

cruise staff disney cruise line

I always purchase a pass to the Rainforest within Senses Spa, which features aromatherapy showers, a steam room, and a sauna.

However, the Rainforests on Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream are the best because they each have two whirlpools set on a secluded ocean-view verandah. It's arguably the quietest, most relaxing part of the ship.

Overall, Disney Fantasy is my favorite ship — for now.

cruise staff disney cruise line

Right now, Disney Fantasy is my favorite ship because it has the most appealing adults-only options. From one of the best Rainforest set-ups to Europa's quintet of bars and lounges, I love spending time on this ship.

However, this could change with Disney's newest ships , Treasure and Destiny, set to embark on their maiden voyages in December 2024 and November 2025, respectively.

7 Deadliest States With The Shortest Life Expectancy (& Why)

This beach town alternative to miami is the best in america, 10 places where you don't have to be 21 to drink.

Disneyland is supposed to be the most magical place on Earth, so what does that make Disney cruises? From the sounds of it, Disney cruises are just as magical as going to one of the parks – perhaps for some folks, it may be an even better time since you’re out at sea! There are tons of entertaining things to do on a Disney cruise, from meeting the characters to hanging out in one of the clubs or activity centers to indulging in a tempting buffet. Most guests leave happy (and maybe slightly bloated) after setting sail on a Disney cruise.

But what about the employees? Things change when you’re working onboard a Disney cruise rather than just enjoying it. Cruise employees get to see all of the behind-the-scenes drama. There’s not much room for downtime or having a personal life when working on a cruise since you can’t exactly get off the ship when your shift ends. Working on a Disney cruise sounds like a lot of hard work, but at the same time, many current and former staff say it was one of their best experiences. Keep reading to see 15 things Disney cruise employees have actually said about working on the water.

16 “Lie To Us To Get An Upgrade”

Some staff is able to give guests upgrades at their discretions, such as free goodies or better accommodation. While there’s no single way to get on an employee’s good side, one Reddit user who used to work for a Disney cruise liner recommends fibbing about special occasions “Tell them it's your birthday trip, you're proposing, anniversary, etc. Disney loves to celebrate!” DisneyAMA explained online.

15 “We Work Over 100 Hours Per Week”

According to employee reviews on Indeed , Disney cruise employees are expected to work long hours without necessarily getting adequately compensated. A former chef de cuisine for a Disney cruise wrote this scathing review; “verbal and physical abuse, forcing us to lie about our working hours, stopping us from having a break.” Another former employee adds that it’s not uncommon to work “100-110 hours a week.”

14 “It's Possible To Get Fired Mid-Cruise”

Just because you’re in the middle of the ocean doesn’t mean your job isn’t on the line. Disney AMA explains that employees who are fired mid-cruise are expected to get off the ship when it next docks. “If it's a very serious offense, they'll station a security guard outside your room and you'd be escorted for the rest of the time on the ship,” the Reddit user explained.

13 “We Totally Date Each Other”

Although we’ve all been warned not to date our co-workers, it doesn’t sound like Disney cruise employees take that to heart. DisneyAMA admits many co-workers become involved with each other during their time at sea. “You are confined on a ship from 4-9 months with only these people,” the Reddit user wrote. “The young 21 years olds hook up just as much as the 40 something married with kids people do!”

12 “Don’t Expect Us To Potty-Train Your Kids”

Disney cruise employees are not allowed to take a child to the bathroom for legal reasons, but when the parents are off somewhere enjoying the adult-friendly cruise activities, they don’t always have the option to wait. “We are not allowed to clean them or wipe them if they have accidents,” DisneyAMA explained on Reddit. “We do because the parents are awful and never actually answer their phones.”

11 “We Can Be Fired For Becoming Friends With Guests”

Disney cruise employees are expected to provide stellar service, but they’re also expected to remain professional. This means no exchanging personal information with guests, even if they’ve developed a friendly dynamic with one another. I became friends with one family and exchanged contact information,” DisneyAMA explained. “The mom and I have become quite close friends... which is a huge no-no and a terminable offense.”

10 “It's The Kids (Not Adults) Who Start Fights”

Disney cruises are a fun, family-oriented vacation. But given how many kids are on board a ship at one time means some things are bound to go wrong. Writing on Reddit, DisneyAMA revealed that their worst guest interaction happened when one child hit another, sending the parents into an uproar. “We had a kid who was hit in the head by another kid. the former employee explained. “[The parents] wanted the kid (Who was about 4) and his family all kicked off the ship and demanded HUGE compensation...”

9 “We Can Get You The Best Seat... Just Ask”

All you’ve got to do is ask! If you want a seat to remember, such as one of the coveted Enchanted Garden Booths, then simply ask one of the cruise employees. It’s not a guarantee that they’ll be able to fulfill your request, but according to Travel + Leisure, this is the most convenient way to ensure you have an incredible dining experience at sea.

8 “This Jobs Takes A Toll On Our Mental Health”

Disneyland may be the happiest place on Earth, but we’re not sure if that applies to the employees. Former Disney cruise employees have been honest about the toll working on the infamous ships takes on their mental health. Having to smile 24/7 – no matter how rude guests maybe – isn’t as easy as it sounds. “I really enjoyed my time on the ship, but it was truly a roller coaster of emotions. You are always exhausted, so emotions are heightened,” Reddit user DisneyAMA explained.

7 “There’s A High Turnover Rate”

While there are some employees who have been with Disney cruises for decades, many of the staff you’ll encounter are relatively new, as there’s a high turn-over rate. After their first 4 to 5 months, many staff is hesitant to sign up again because of how taxing the job is. There’s even a high turnover rate when it comes to management. “The management onboard changed every three or four months and some managers are good at being managers where others should not be managers at all,” one ex-employee wrote on Indeed.

6 “The Accommodations Are Cramped”

It’s obvious that cruise ship employees are expected to sleep on the ship during their time at sea, but according to ex-Disney cruise employees, the accommodations are anything by lavish. A former youth Activities Entertainment Host described the rooms as “tiny cabins with a roommate.” Don’t expect much privacy during your hours off!

5 “We're Forced To Take Vacation Time”

Business Insider explains that most crew members are on a four to five-month contract. But after that expires, they’re required to take an 8-week ‘vacation’ before they’re allowed to work on another ship. One ex-employee tells the publication it’s a way to protect the mental health of the staff. "Let's face it, it's hard work being 'on' six days out of seven. It's good to go home and see our families and recharge our batteries," they explained.

4 “We Get To Enjoy Free Food”

One of the best parts of cruises is the buffet, and when you’re working on a Disney cruise ship, you can fully expect to enjoy the large quantities of food. Many former employees note on Indeed that staff gets their food for free. The only downside? Don’t expect a lot of variety or the highest quality of food.

3 “Don’t Bother With The Character Meet-and-Greets”

It’s understandable why guests would assume the character meet-and-greets are the best places to say hi to Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck – but it’s actually not! Travel + Leisure recommends waiting until you see a character freely wandering around the cruise, like on the pool deck or even in the elevator. That way, you won’t be waiting in line for hours.

2 “We Put Up With A Lot Of Wardrobe Changes”

Many guests are impressed by how intricate the employee uniforms are – there’s basically a different uniform for every position. One former employee admitted on Indeed they would change their “uniform 3 times a day for locations,” depending on where they were needed to work.

1 “Careful What You Say On Comment Cards”

Many guests don’t realize how much of an impact filling in a comments card can be. According to Business Insider, complaints are taken seriously by management. "Our managers really do read all of those, and if we've made a guest unhappy, we'll definitely be reprimanded," a former employee tells the publication, adding that staff may also be rewarded for a very positive comment card.

Understanding Celiac Disease and Travel Challenges

The importance of gluten-free dining options.

When you have celiac disease, finding safe gluten-free dining options is crucial. This autoimmune disorder affects how your body reacts to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. For individuals with celiac disease, consuming gluten triggers an immune response that can damage the lining of the small intestine. Therefore, it’s essential to have access to gluten-free food to avoid health complications while enjoying your cruise vacation.

Navigating Vacation Dining: A Celiac Perspective

As a traveler with celiac disease, navigating vacation dining can present unique challenges. You must carefully consider where and what to eat to prevent gluten exposure. When planning a cruise, it’s vital to communicate your dietary needs to the cruise line in advance. Most reputable cruise lines offer gluten-free options and are willing to accommodate guests with celiac disease.

Remember to inform the cruise staff about your condition when making dining reservations, and don’t hesitate to ask questions about food preparation to ensure it meets your dietary requirements. By being proactive and communicating effectively, you can have a safe and enjoyable dining experience while on board.

Criteria for Choosing the Best Cruise Line for Celiac Passengers

Gluten-free certification and training.

When selecting the best cruise line for celiac passengers, look for ships that have gluten-free certification and staff with proper training in handling dietary needs. You’ll want to ensure that the cruise line’s commitment to providing safe gluten-free options is validated by recognized certifications. This certification guarantees that the ship meets strict standards for preparing gluten-free meals, giving you peace of mind during your voyage.

Variety and Availability of Gluten-Free Menus

A crucial factor in choosing a cruise line as a celiac passenger is the variety and availability of gluten-free menus onboard. Opt for cruise lines that offer a wide range of gluten-free options across their dining venues. This ensures that you have ample choices for every meal and dining experience while at sea. From breakfast to dinner and even snacks, having diverse gluten-free menus enhances your cruise vacation.

Cross-Contamination Prevention Measures

Another essential aspect to consider when picking a cruise line for celiac individuals is the implementation of cross-contamination prevention measures. Confirm that the cruise line has strict protocols in place to prevent cross-contact between gluten-free foods and those containing gluten. By prioritizing cruise lines that take rigorous measures to avoid cross-contamination, you can enjoy your cruise without worrying about unintentional exposure to gluten.

Ensure a worry-free dining experience by selecting a cruise line that excels in gluten-free certification, provides a wide variety of gluten-free menu options, and implements robust measures to prevent cross-contamination. By considering these criteria, you can make an informed decision and enjoy a safe and satisfying cruise vacation as a celiac passenger.

Planning Your Gluten-Free Cruise Adventure

What to look for when booking.

When booking a cruise as a traveler with celiac disease, there are crucial factors to consider to ensure a safe and enjoyable gluten-free experience. Here are some key aspects to pay attention to:

  • Pre-Booking Communication: Consider reaching out to the cruise line before your trip to communicate your dietary requirements. This proactive approach can help the staff prepare in advance for your gluten-free meals.

Communicating Your Needs with Cruise Staff

Effective communication with the cruise staff is paramount to guaranteeing a seamless gluten-free dining experience during your cruise. Here’s how you can communicate your needs effectively:

So what cruise staff are on the ships right now? I know Ponz, Frankie, and David are on the Wonder, and I know Dave left for Holland America, so who else is on?

Proudly afflicted with tdma.

I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you looking for a full list of all cruise staff with current contracts on all Disney ships? If so, that's sort of a huge list of people. Contracts roll so quickly. For example: I know people that were working during our Alaska cruise on the Wonder in May that are now on vacation. Others are still on the Wonder at different stages of their contract. It is a constant revolving door. Are you curious about specific people? Maybe a list of who you are wondering about would allow others to help you. Anyhoo.... not exactly sure what you are asking, but maybe you can elaborate. - Dreams
