European river cruise is a fabulous way to spend the holidays and shop in unique markets | Sandy Fenton

Markets on the Danube

If you're looking to travel over the holiday season, Sandy Fenton recommends booking a European river cruise sooner than later for the chance to browse in markets like this one in Nuremberg. Charissa Fay, Viking

Have you been thinking about starting a new holiday tradition, or perhaps giving the gift of travel this year?

If the answer is yes, there’s still time to book a magical and memorable Christmas Market River cruise throughout Europe, but you’ll need to confirm your plans now.

European river cruising continues to be a top vacation choice for Americans (with over 90% satisfaction scores). There are more ships, new and longer itineraries, expanded port excursions, and onboard amenities than ever before.

In my opinion, there’s no easier or more carefree way to explore Europe than on a river cruise, and now there are more options available whether you’re traveling on a budget or seeking ultra-luxury – and everything in between.

If you’re a history buff (particularly WWII landmarks and Jewish heritage sites) and love scenery, the Danube offers guests opportunities to get up close and personal throughout Budapest and Nuremberg, while sailing the stunning Wachau Valley.

For foodies and wine lovers, the Rhine, Moselle and Rhone itineraries will not disappoint, especially the glorious vineyards throughout the region.

Today’s river ships are modern, comfortable, and small (fewer than 200 passengers), with a friendly atmosphere, attentive service, and all the upscale amenities found in fine European hotels. But note that river ships are not big, glitzy floating cities. They are the opposite of Las Vegas or mega-ocean cruise ships with all the 24/7 onboard activities, entertainment, casinos, or water parks.

If you’re like me and love a holiday season bursting with decorations, merriment, and tradition, Christmas Market sailing should be a perfect fit for you. Just imagine snow-dusted hills surrounding cliff-top ancient castles and charming cobblestone villages decorated with millions of twinkling lights and candles, complete with gigantic pine tree displays in the town square.

The moment you step onto your decorated river ship you’ll feel the Christmas spirit. Local groups perform traditional carols amidst tastefully decorated trees and displays. And let’s not forget about all the delicious holiday feasts and festive drinks served daily.

Christmas markets have been an annual tradition in Europe for centuries, with the markets open during the four weeks of Advent from about Nov. 24 through Dec. 24. Most Christmas river cruises sail throughout Germany, Austria, Hungary, France and Switzerland. And trust me, the grand cities of Vienna, Budapest, Salzburg, and Paris take on a completely different look and feel during the season, and are not nearly as crowded as in the summer.

Onboard guests walk off the ship into the decorated town centers where the Christmas Markets are lit up with old and new decor and bustling with local families gathering for hearty seasonal meals (be sure to sample some hot mulled wine, authentic gingerbread, and thick hot chocolate) before shopping among the local merchants. Every port village features its own local beverages, specialties, and foods.

Be sure to take your time around all the nativity scenes, handcrafted and custom-built by the villagers and placed throughout the market and around the beautiful small churches and magnificent cathedrals illuminated with sparkling lights and handmade decorations.

Don’t wait til your last port day to complete your holiday shopping. Some of the most popular gifts you’ll come across include traditional and authentic glass-blown ornaments & decorations, nutcrackers, wooden toys and handmade dolls. (Leave space in your luggage to bring all your treasures home.)

Visiting Europe during the Christmas season is truly unforgettable. I loved walking about and exploring the decorated cobblestone streets and storybook villages, especially at dusk when it seemed the entire port town was glowing with candlelight, and then returning to the ship where every evening was a special holiday performance or event.

I recommend packing a waterproof coat, gloves, hat/headband, scarf, and comfy walking shoes or boots. The ships are so lovely and warm inside, but when walking throughout the village or spending time on the ships’ outside observation deck or on your private verandah – especially when sailing – you will be happy to be nice and toasty.

Several river cruise lines offer Christmas Market sailings, including Viking, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, AmaWaterways, Tauck, Scenic, and Emerald Cruises.

Is it too late to book for this season? Maybe. It could depend on your itinerary – but if there is a trip you want to do this year, you must contact your trusted travel agent as soon as possible.

European Christmas Market cruises are super popular, and if you can’t go this season, then book your trip now for 2025. All river cruises go on sale, and depending on the time of year and itinerary, you might be able to find some excellent sales and promotions. Be sure you are getting on the right ship for your personal tastes, lifestyle, and budget.

Featherweight Cruise: Quilt Through Alaska's Glaciers

Looking for the perfect blend of quilting and Alaskan adventure? Join us aboard the Celebrity Solstice next June where you will enjoy some of Alaska's most stunning sights as well as a delightful quilting experience courtesy of The Featherweight Shop ! Take in gorgeous views of wildlife, glaciers, and mountains as you sew on a Featherweight prepared just for you.

During the seven-day cruise, you will…

  • Eat like royalty
  • Attend Featherweight and quilting tutorials
  • Work on your own quilt top (all pieces are precut by laser and ready to sew!)
  • Enjoy breathtaking views of some of Alaska’s finest highlights
  • Have plenty of time for excursions at ports

By the time you disembark, you will carry home not just your gorgeous quilt project, but treasured memories of the Last Frontier.  Sign up now—the cruises are already two-thirds full and will sell out fast!

Cruise 1 - June 15-22  —  Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Hubbard Glacier.

Cruise 2 - June 22-29  —  Icy Strait Point, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier.

Not sure which cruise to pick? Take a look at the pictures below to see if the glaciers settle that question for you! The biggest difference between the cruises is that Cruise 1 features Hubbard Glacier (slightly larger) while Cruise 2 features Dawes Glacier (slightly smaller, but still magnificent.)

Note: Not to make things terribly confusing, but as you can see in the recap below, the order was reversed in 2024—Cruise 1 featured Dawes Glacier, while Cruise 2 featured Hubbard Glacier. You're welcome.

CRUISE 1 - featuring Dawes Glacier

Day 1 - vancouver, bc .

The  Celebrity Solstice  departed from naturally stunning Vancouver, British Columbia, which is nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Coastal Mountains. You might want to arrive a day early to explore!

We loved setting up the classroom for quilters. Those floor-to-ceiling windows helped create a blissful learning and sewing environment for everyone!

Day 2 - Sea Day (cruising)

Quilters enjoyed our tutorials on “Getting To Know Your Featherweight” and how to use the different quarter-inch feet and piecing accessories. By the end, our quilters had learned unique tips to advance their piecing skills!

Day 3 - Icy Strait Point

We loved the pristine waters, lush forests, snow-capped mountains, humpback whales, and bald eagles.

Day 4 - Skagway

A bit of time travel! Skagway transported us back to the late 19th century with its rich (no pun intended) Gold Rush-era vibe. We rode a vintage train on a narrow-gauge railroad from Skagway into the heart of the Yukon, climbing 3,000 feet (!) and passing glacial rivers, waterfalls, and gorges.

Day 5 - Endicott Arm (featuring Dawes Glacier) & Juneau

The highlight of Cruise 1! We sailed near the Dawes Glacier, a majestic 15-mile-long ribbon of ice rising like a crystalline fortress out of the frigid water. Half a mile wide, six hundred feet tall, the glacier is famous for its calving, which is when massive chunks of ice break off and plunge into the ocean.

Below shows our morning view of Dawes. The sunny clear view was spectacular. The cruise coordinator of the ship woke everyone up at 5:30 am because the conditions were so unusual: smooth, calm, clear, and just pristinely beautiful. We are eager to go back and explore excursion options to possibly see the calving up close on Dawes.

Then we enjoyed this view from the tram in Juneau:

Day 6 - Ketchikan

Visiting the quilt and yarn shops in Ketchikan were a highlight! We enjoyed perusing all the Alaska-themed fabrics (and dodging rain drops).

Day 7 - Sea Day (cruising)

The lovely Rosanna (who assisted with organizing much of this cruise—thank you, Rosanna!) taught quilters how to make a Featherweight accessory bag featuring our custom-printed Featherweight collage fabric.

Day 8 - Vancouver, BC

This is where we said goodbye to the first crew of quilters and hello to the second. Welcome aboard!

CRUISE 2 - featuring Hubbard Glacier

The second cruise had the same itinerary as the first with a couple tweaks: the ship did not make port at Skagway, instead allowing more time to visit the awe-inspiring Hubbard Glacier.

Day 2 - Sea Day (Cruising)

Quilters got right to work! They had impressive focus while Alaska did her best to distract.

The weather at Icy Straight Point definitely lives up to the “icy.” Even in May, the lows can plummet to below freezing at night, and during the day, you’re lucky if you hit 60 degrees. A down jacket is the way to go!

Day 4 - Hubbard Glacier & Cruising

Our favorite glacier! This colossal ice palace peaks at 400 feet and stretches nearly 76 miles long. The glacier’s surface is a mosaic of brilliant blue and white and turquoise that seem to glow from within, as if lit by a hidden source.

But Hubbard isn’t just a visual beauty—it’s also a symphony of sound. The quiet is punctuated by deep rumbles of ice shifting and cracking, a reminder of the glacier's relentless movement. You hear the distant, thunderous roar of ice calving into the water, followed by the softer splash as icebergs break free and plunge into the bay. Magnificent and glorious!

Stunning Hubbard Glacier as seen during a quilting cruise to Alaska in 2024.

Day 5 - Juneau

A highlight for Kate, Ruthie, and April was the helicopter excursion in Juneau—landing on the Mendenhall Glacier and drinking the water directly from it! The water was clean, cold, and so refreshing—and blue .

The Featherweight Shop staff members stand on Mendenhall Glacier during a quilting cruise to Alaska in 2024.

Shockingly different weather from one week to the next! On the first cruise, Ketchikan was a chilly, sopping adventure. But on the second cruise—here comes the sun!

Day 7 - Sea Day (Cruising)

Sewing like mad! On the last sea day, the class room thrummed with the happy hum of dozens of Singer Featherweights. There’s no homier sound!

Day 8 - Vancouver, BC

Brimming with memories for a lifetime, we returned to Vancouver and prepared for the long drive back to our hometown of Kooskia, located just north of Central Idaho. See you next year!

Quilts Ahoy

Just look at the smashing results from both cruises. Well done, quilters!

What quilters are saying…

“I can hardly wait to go back. The Featherweight Shop  cruise was so fun.” - Peggy S. “I would like to say thank you to the entire Featherweight staff for their hard work and dedication to ensure a wonderful quilting experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the quilting environment, and my husband and I loved the cruise and our Alaska journey.” - Joanne D. “Christine and I had a wonderful time on week one. The Featherweight crew were very organized and made sure we had what we needed for a successful cruise. Loved the daily gifts found on our sewing machines and the knowledge shared with us about our Featherweights! Thank you!” - Linda F.

Will we see you in Alaska next June?

Rapper Fatman Scoop dies at 53 after collapsing on stage in Connecticut

NEW YORK (AP) — Fatman Scoop, who topped charts in Europe with “Be Faithful” two decades ago and later contributed to hits by other artists, died after collapsing on stage at a show Friday in Connecticut, according to officials and his family. He was 53.

The cause of his death wasn’t immediately clear.

He was performing at Hamden Town Center Park when he collapsed Friday evening, town chief of staff Sean Grace said Saturday. Mayor Lauren Garrett posted on Facebook that he had a medical emergency. Concertgoers and paramedics tried to aid the artist, who was taken to a hospital, she wrote.

His family wrote in an Instagram post Saturday that “the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon on stage and in life.”

If the world knew him as an artist who got clubgoers moving, his family cherished him as “the laughter in our lives, a constant source of support, unwavering strength and courage,” his relatives wrote.

“His music made us dance and embrace life with positivity. His joy was infectious and the generosity he extended to all will be deeply missed but never forgotten,” they added.

Fatman Scoop, born Isaac Freeman III, was from New York City’s Harlem neighborhood and broke out with 1999’s “Be Faithful.” What started as a minor success in the U.S. took off in Europe with a 2003 re-release, hitting No. 1 on the singles charts in the U.K. and Ireland.

The next year, he appeared on the U.K. television series “Chancers,” in which musicians mentored artists who wanted to make it in the U.S., the BBC reported. He also was a contestant on “Celebrity Big Brother 16: UK vs USA,” which was filmed in the U.K. and aired in 2015.

But Scoop — sometimes stylized as Fat Man Scoop or FatMan Scoop — was perhaps best known for his feature role on Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control,” a 2005 song of the summer that also featured Ciara. The track won a short-form music video Grammy at the 2006 award show.

The same year as “Lose Control,” he was featured on Mariah Carey’s “It’s Like That.” He also was featured on tracks from Timbaland, David Guetta, The Situation and Skrillex, among other artists. In 2018, he reunited with Elliott and Ciara for a remix of the latter’s “Level Up.”

Elliott praised Scoop’s “VOICE and energy” Saturday on X, saying he had contributed to many songs that made people happy over more than two decades.

“Your IMPACT is HUGE & will be NEVER be forgotten,” she added.

His longtime booking agency, MN2S, described him as an artist with “boundless enthusiasm,” a passion for music and a voice and personality that “made an indelible mark on the industry.”

His MN2S representative, Sharron Elkabas, said in a statement Saturday that she had spoken to him a few days earlier.

“He was in such good spirits. It’s hard to believe he is no longer with us,” she said.

Climate activists sue european union over green finance standards for airlines.

On August 27, a coalition of climate activist organizations filed a lawsuit against the European Union over “green” labels for the aviation and shipping industries. The suit claims the EU Commission qualified those industries as green investments, despite little or no reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The case was filed before the European Court of Justice in an attempt to force the Commission to review the standards.

As part of the European Green Deal, the EU has implemented investment and reporting standards relating to the reduction of GHG emissions and broader environmental and climate friendly actions. This green transformation is being implemented through various laws at the EU level, that are then adopted by the member states.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive created a requirement that businesses report GHG emissions and other environmental, social, and governance activities. The CSRD not only provides information to consumers, banks , and regulators, but also provides a tool for investors looking to make green investments.

Connected to the CSRD, is the EU taxonomy for sustainable activities . The EU Taxonomy is designed to create uniform and clear standards for what is classified as “sustainable.” The standards are industry specific to take into consideration the needs and requirements of the various sectors. The intent is to allow businesses to have clear direction on green claims, and allow investors to make informed decisions when wanting to

The EU Taxonomy Regulation went into force in July 2020. Work then began on drafting industry specific definitions. That work was delegated by the Commission to experts, who follow a public process to draft and refine the definitions. The final language is then brought back to the Commission for adoption. A similar process is being used in the CSRD, where the drafting has been delegated to the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group.

At the end of 2023, the Commission “established additional technical screening criteria for determining the conditions under which certain economic activities qualify as contributing substantially to climate change mitigation or climate change adaptation and for determining whether those activities cause no significant harm to any of the other environmental objectives.”

The screening criteria addressed the aviation and shipping industries. According to Opportunity Green, “The aviation criteria are so weak that 100% of Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air’s order books, and 90% of Airbus’ upcoming deliveries, could be labelled ‘green’, according to analysis by Transport & Environment.”

Five climate related NGOs filed an appeal for review with the EU Commission in January. On June 17, the Commission rejected the appeal , finding “that the Amended Climate Delegated Act complies with the applicable EU legislation.”

The next step is to bring the matter before the ECJ. On August 27, CLAW, Dryade, Fossielvrij NL, Opportunity Green, and Protect our Winters Austria filed the suit.

In a press release, the NGOs stated , “The NGOs argue that these criteria are contrary to the requirements of the Taxonomy Regulation, as they are not based on conclusive science, do not support a 1.5°C pathway, and will hamper the development of low-carbon alternatives in these sectors…

“The EU Taxonomy should act as the ‘gold standard’ for informing ethical and sustainable investments. It exists to provide a verified list of ‘green’ investments to companies, investors and policymakers, with a view to directing huge amounts of private finance to activities that deliver a fair, green transition…

“As it stands, under the shipping criteria, enormous cruise ships which run on LNG would be deemed ‘green’. However, these ships not only produce CO2 but leak huge amounts of methane into our atmosphere, a greenhouse gas which is 80 times more potent than CO2 in the short term.”

The Court filings have not yet been made public, so the specific arguments are unclear as is the timeline for the ECJ to address this matter. However, it is unlikely the Court will address the manner anytime soon.

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Santorini is the epitome of Greece. Wander into the welcoming cafes in Oia, a village teeming with whitewashed buildings and blue-domed roofs. Continue to some of the world’s oldest vineyards and taste the bouquet of wines produced on the island, making sure to visit the black-sand beach of Kamari before heading back to your Mediterranean cruise ship.

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amid Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lie in the park and throughout the entire city.

Experience the captivating charm of Naples, Italy, with a range of enriching excursions. Explore the ancient ruins of Pompeii, where well-preserved mosaics and frescoes offer a glimpse into Roman life. For a taste of luxury, visit the stunning Isle of Capri. Enjoy a scenic jetfoil ride, explore Anacapri, and savor a southern Italian lunch with fresh, local ingredients. Wine enthusiasts can hike to Mount Vesuvius' summit for breathtaking views, followed by a vineyard tour and wine tasting paired with local delicacies. Discover the wonders of Naples on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

On a Mediterranean cruise to Livorno, travel to Florence or Pisa where artifacts abound. Capture snapshots of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, stop by Michelangelo’s David statue at the Accademia and walk up to the “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery. Or explore the countryside and meander through the region’s rolling hills that bear vineyards and green olive groves.

Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.

Discover the vibrant culture of Istanbul, Turkey, with a variety of excursions. Explore the iconic Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, marvel at the treasures in Topkapi Palace, or wander through the bustling Grand Bazaar. Take a scenic Bosphorus Cruise, visit the ancient Underground Cistern, or experience a traditional Turkish breakfast. Each excursion offers a unique glimpse into Istanbul's rich history and dynamic present. Immerse yourself in the magic of this transcontinental city on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Walk past temples and marble-lined sanctuaries in Delos, the birthplace of famous Greek gods. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a European cruise from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed a return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Why Cruise the Mediterranean

In lands where the culture is as flavorful as the cuisine, the splendor of the Mediterranean speaks for itself.

World-Class Dining

Captivating cuisine

With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.

Bold reds and crisp whites

The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Ancient Ruins

Where history comes to life

From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Art Galleries & Museums

Artistic ingenuity abounds

From the treasures on land to the jewels within museums, the Mediterranean is a true work of art. On an Italian cruise, see portraits from the Renaissance period at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Or walk in the footsteps of celebrated artists that called these regions home — like Picasso and Dali — and allow their work to spark your creativity.

Sun-Kissed Beaches

A vision of natural beauty

Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.

Mediterranean excursions

Our award-winning Mediterranean cruise shore excursions bring you to iconic beaches, landmarks and ancient artifacts. See the yacht-lined shores of Kotor while riding on a tuk tuk, an electric rickshaw. Savor the flavors of “Koum Kouat” liqueur, created from Corfu’s exclusive citrus plant. Or stroll along the streets of Dubrovnik’s Old town, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.

Local connections

From chefs and beverage makers to artists and guides, meet the many personalities that call the Mediterranean home with our Local Connections program. On a Mediterranean cruise, voyage to an olive tree farm just outside of Provence, and join your hosts for a unique olive oil tasting. Or explore the Archaeological Museum of Naples with a local artist, and accompany them for lunch to dive even deeper in Italy’s art scene.

More ashore

Enjoy even more opportunities to experience the colors, cultures and flavors of the Mediterranean with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Witness the beautiful sunset in Mykonos on a Greek cruise. Sit front-row for a flamenco dance, and savor a paella dinner during an evening in Barcelona. Or stroll the illuminated streets of Genoa with gelato in hand after a traditional Italian dinner.

Unforgettable Mediterranean Cruise Shore Excursions

Our award-winning Mediterranean cruise shore excursions bring you to iconic beaches, landmarks and ancient artifacts. Europe Cruises

The continent of Europe is like a puzzle waiting to be solved by you. The nearly 50 nations each offer something different, perhaps a wonderful delicacy or an exciting tale of conquering knights and quirky princesses. The continent is divided into many regions. There is Northern Europe where you’ll find Scandinavian countries like Sweden and Denmark, with their rugged natural landscapes and ultra-modern architecture. The Mediterranean encompasses nations like Spain, Italy and Greece. Featured below are some of the best ways to spend your time cruising through Europe:

Gondola ride in Venice, Italy

  • Spend a romantic evening on a gondola ride under the Rialto Bridge on the Grand Canal in Venice, a magical city where boats replace cars.

Top Northern Europe FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Northern Europe?

Northern Europe is enchanting at any time of year, but May to September is the best period. You’ll enjoy long, bright days and almost 24 hours of daylight in June. Summer for the locals is a time of festivals, exploring the countryside, and enjoying al-fresco dining.

How long are typical itineraries?

Our Northern Europe itineraries vary from seven to 14 nights, with a vast range of choices, whether you’re looking for a week in the Norwegian fjords or a longer itinerary that explores the capitals of the Baltic. You can even sail from Southampton, England deep into the Arctic Circle, to Norway’s Nordkapp.

Are there any specific visa requirements for cruising to countries in Northern Europe?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

The vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

What kind of weather can be expected during a Northern Europe cruise?

You can expect all kinds of summer weather, from bright sunshine to occasional mist, rain, and drizzle. Evenings can be cool. Come prepared for all eventualities, with light layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy shoes.

What types of excursions are available?

We offer excursions for a range of interests, from guided hikes to scenic boat rides, in-depth visits to castles and museums, and immersive explorations of local food and drink. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, an individual, a family, or a group of friends, you’ll find a fantastic range of cultural and experiential activities in every port.

Are there any cultural or language tips I should know before cruising to Northern Europe?

On your travels in Northern Europe, you will experience a number of different cultures, currencies, cuisines, and languages. It’s important, and fun, to acknowledge these differences and learn a little about the historical events that have shaped each destination. English is widely spoken in Scandinavian countries, especially in the service industry, although it’s always appreciated if you learn a few words of the local language.

Prepare to encounter a number of different currencies on your travels; Finland, Estonia, and the Republic of Ireland use the Euro, but other countries have their own currencies. U.S. dollars are not necessarily accepted, although credit cards are widely used, and there are plenty of ATMs.
