Bono, the edge take musical journey through u2's past with david letterman in 'a sort of homecoming'.

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES -- "Bono & the Edge: A Sort of Homecoming" features the U2 musicians showing their friend David Letterman around their hometown of Dublin, Ireland. Mixed in with interviews Dave did with the two band members, we also hear them play some of their best known songs in new, reimagined ways.

"We're going back to being children here aren't we the Edge? I think so," said Bono.

U2's front man Bono and lead guitarist the Edge take us on a musical and personal journey for the Disney+ documentary, "Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, With Dave Letterman."

The film is part documentary, part travel adventure... and along with plenty of music, there are stories about their writing process... and their legacy.

"The songs brought us here, that's what I get back to. The songs!" said the Edge. "I could get up one morning, start a song that becomes a very famous piece that might be around well after I'm gone. So it's like what else would I want to do with my day?"

Letterman serves as our "tour guide"... and says he was amazed to witness the duo's creative force.

"They've been together so long, had so many hits, they can't stop. Once the switch is thrown it stays thrown," said Letterman. "And to be around this, you have the history and to be around it as a living exhibit, it's like being in the best museum in the world."

Bono joked that what they learned about themselves during this process of revisiting classic songs... is that they needed Dave by their side!

"You know, the Irish are really good at talking, except when the cameras are on. We're not so good at that," said Bono. "We're better in pubs. We even got him into a pub. And as you'll see in the special, some genius Irish talent playing for him and, yeah, he made us forget that the cameras were there."

The documentary will debut Friday on Disney+. In case you're curious there's an end credit dedicated to the two members who aren't taking part in the film that reads; "A special thanks to Adam (Clayton) and Larry (Mullen Jr.) for letting us go rogue on this one."

U2 album cover

September 1976: A 14-year-old drummer posts a notice at school that he's looking to start a band. Rehearsals are held in his parent's kitchen in Dublin, and The Larry Mullen Band is born.

The name didn't last, but more than 30 years and 22 Grammys later, the band, which would eventually be called U2, has proven it has what it takes to stay on top.

The keys to U2's longevity include respect for each other and their fans; the ability to continuously reinvent themselves and their musical style; and powerful music with a message.

But the meanings of most U2 songs are subject to interpretation. Bono is a genius at writing ambiguous lyrics, allowing listeners to decide what each song means to them. Read on to take a musical journey with the band that Time magazine once named "Rock's Hottest Ticket."

1. I Will Follow (1980)

This peppy 1980s tune, released on the Boy album, is still as fresh today as when it debuted nearly three decades ago. The song is charged with Edge's gritty guitar riffs and a pounding drum beat by Larry Mullen, Jr., still played with the intensity of an 18 year old. According to Bono, the lyrics are about the unconditional love between mother (or God) and child. Whatever the child does, whatever his or her faults, a mother (or God) still loves her child.

2. Out of Control (1980)

Another toe-tapper from Boy , "Out of Control" has the distinction of being the first song the guys heard played on the radio. Bono wrote the lyrics in the wee hours of the morning following his eighteenth birthday. "It was one dull morning/I woke the world with bawling/I was so sad/They were so glad . . ." The song is about being born -- or rather objecting to it -- and feeling that you have no control over your life.

3. Gloria (1981)

No, it's not a cover of fellow Irishman Van Morrison's 1960s hit. This one comes from U2's sophomore album, October , which was heavy-laden with references to religion and spirituality. Bono has said he had a difficult time writing the lyrics, so he turned it into a psalm, complete with verses in Latin. The music is quite edgy considering the subject matter, which is what makes it classic U2.

4. Tomorrow (1981)

Most U2 lyrics are pretty heavy. But with "Tomorrow," from October , Bono was truly speaking from the heart. When he was 14, his mother suffered a brain hemorrhage at her father's funeral and died a few days later. Bono would later state that the melancholy lyrics to "Tomorrow" were a description of her funeral.

5. Sunday Bloody Sunday (1983)

From the War album, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is a powerhouse in the U2 canon, performed on every major tour since its debut. It's a classic U2 protest song about the troubles in Northern Ireland. Larry's militaristic drumming and Edge's abrasive guitar drive the song, while Bono's powerful lyrics cry out "How long, how long must we sing this song?"

The song, which reached number seven on Billboard 's Mainstream Rock chart in the 1980s, has now become a global plea to end the violence that threatens the world today.

6. New Year's Day (1983)

This song, inspired by the solidarity movement in Poland, reached number two on Billboard 's Mainstream Rock chart. It was also the first U2 video to get major airplay on MTV, giving the band the exposure that would get them named "Band of the Eighties" by Rolling Stone magazine just two years later. During live shows, Edge takes control on this song, playing guitar and keyboard simultaneously in parts and also singing backup vocals.

7. 40 (1983)

Also from War , Bono based the lyrics of this bass-driven song on Psalm 40. Although the song was only released in Germany, it is a fan favorite that has frequently been used to close shows. When a show ends with "40," guitarist Edge and bassist Adam Clayton switch instruments, and the band members leave the stage one by one -- first Bono, Adam, then Edge, leaving Larry alone onstage to perform a brief (but kickin') drum solo, as fans chant the chorus.

8. Pride (In the Name of Love) (1984)

Released on The Unforgettable Fire album, this song about Jesus ("one man betrayed with a kiss") and Martin Luther King, Jr., reached number two on Billboard 's Mainstream Rock chart. Bono gave his all recording "Pride," shouting the lyrics from the depths of his soul.

But don't rely on Bono for a history lesson; the lyric referring to Dr. King ("Early morning, April four/Shot rings out in the Memphis sky . . .") is incorrect -- King was actually killed around 6:00 p.m. Bono has since realized his mistake and now sings "Early evening, April four" in live shows.

9. Bad (1984)

From The Unforgettable Fire album, "Bad" was never released as a single, but it's a fan favorite that sometimes closes shows. As always, the lyrics are subject to much debate, but according to Bono, the song is about drug addiction, specifically heroin, which ran rampant in Dublin in the early 1980s and had taken hold of one of his friends.

Ever the perfectionist, Bono feels the song could've been better if he'd "finished" it. Most fans think it's a masterpiece as it stands.

10. With or Without You (1987)

This perpetual crowd-pleaser, released on the Grammy Award-winning album The Joshua Tree , was U2's first number-one song in America. Some feel the song is about Jesus ("see the thorn twist in your side"); others think it's about romantic love and longing for someone you can't be with.

The song is rife with symbolism, in both the lyrics and the music. Adam's bass is the pulse. Larry's drumming is the heartbeat. Edge's guitar chords represent the agony of a heart breaking. And Bono's voice and haunting lyrics are the personification of love and longing and the agony of unrequited love.

When his voice cries out, you know he's not just reciting the words but truly feeling the pain of loving someone he can't be with . . . and you feel that pain with him.

11. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (1987)

No dual meaning here -- U2's second song to top U.S. charts, "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," is a gospel song about searching for and understanding one's spiritual beliefs. U2 even took a gospel choir with them to sing backup vocals during The Joshua Tree tour.

Bono often says he's not satisfied with some of his recorded lyrics, so he tends to "rewrite" them during live performances. For example, the original lyric: "You broke the bonds/And you loosed the chains/Carried the cross of my shame/Oh my shame . . ." is now sung: "You broke the bonds/And you loosed the chains/Carried the cross/Took my shame/You took the blame . . ." The change is ever so slight, but it makes the song much deeper and more meaningful.

12. Where the Streets Have No Name (1987)

Although "Streets" didn't crack the top ten in the States, it's a fan favorite that was frequently used to open shows on The Joshua Tree tour. The lyrics were inspired by a trip Bono and his wife took to Ethiopia in the mid-1980s, during which they volunteered at a refugee camp orphanage. With Edge's distinctive scratchy chords, Larry's enthusiastic drumming, and Adam's deep bass holding it all together, even the band admits it's much better live.

13. Desire (1988)

With "Desire," released as the first single from the album Rattle and Hum , Bono parodies and criticizes evangelical preachers, politicians, and the greed ingrained in the landscape of 1980s America. But the lyrics can have a more carnal interpretation as well.

Either way, the song was a hit, reaching number one on both Billboard 's Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts. The song also won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance, and it was U2's first song to reach the top of the charts in the U.K.

14. Angel of Harlem (1988)

With "Angel of Harlem," U2 racked up another number one on Billboard 's Mainstream Rock chart. Recorded in Sun Studios in Memphis, Elvis's legendary music engineer Cowboy Jack Clement pitched in on this one, and it was all captured on film in the "rockumentary" Rattle and Hum .

The song chronicles the band's arrival in America for their first tour in 1980 ("It was a cold and wet December day/When we touched the ground at JFK . . ."). It is also a tribute to Billie Holiday, the "Angel of Harlem."

15. All I Want Is You (1989)

Bono has said that "All I Want Is You," from Rattle and Hum , is dedicated to his wife, Ali. The poetic and symbolic lyrics describe his desire for true, unconditional love, and the promises his lover makes show the depth of her feelings. The song closed the Rattle and Hum movie, and much to the surprise of fans (because it seldom closes a live show), it was the last song played on the Vertigo tour, when it closed the show in Honolulu in December 2006.

16. Mysterious Ways (1991)

In the 1990s, U2 took a new musical direction, attempting to "chop down The Joshua Tree " by reinventing themselves with a funkier, more experimental sound on the album Achtung Baby . It must have worked because "Mysterious Ways," powered by Edge's abrasive guitar riffs and Bono's enigmatic lyrics, scored U2 another number one on both Billboard' s Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts.

Fans disagree over the song's meaning -- some feel it's deeply spiritual, with references to John the Baptist, while others believe the lyrics are more sexual in nature, and others just think it's a funky dance groove.

17. One (1992)

Such a simple title, such a powerful lyric. Tensions were running high while recording Achtung Baby , and the band was reportedly on the brink of breaking up. "One" is the song that brought them back together, essentially saving the band.

The lyrics can be interpreted in several ways: a gay son coming out to his father; a relationship in which a couple loves each other but have hurt each other too much to stay together; or Bono's rocky relationship with his own father.

Whatever the meaning, the song reminds us that all humans are equal and that we need to help those less fortunate: "We're one, but we're not the same/We get to carry each other, carry each other." "One" topped Billboard 's Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts and has been played at every U2 concert since its debut on the ZooTV tour in 1992.

18. Numb (1993)

U2 got even more experimental with the album Zooropa . "Numb," the first single from that album, reached number two on Billboard 's Modern Rock chart. Edge takes lead vocals on this song, speaking the lyrics in a monotone voice with backup vocals by Bono and Larry Mullen, Jr. -- a very rare occurrence for the drummer. Bono has said the lyrics symbolize information overload from the constant barrage of media coverage.

19. Stay (Far Away, So Close) (1993)

"Stay" is another example of a fan favorite that did not chart well, not breaking the top ten on any U.S. chart. The song, which appears on Zooropa , was written for the Wim Wenders' film Far Away, So Close .

The song's meaning is debatable, but one take is that it's about a guardian angel who feels helpless that he can watch over the living person but not really help them. Or perhaps it's about somebody caught in an abusive relationship. Fans love it, but it hasn't been played on tour since 2001.

20. Please (1997)

"Please" appeared on Pop , the band's most experimental and dance-oriented album to date, which band members agree needed a few more weeks to really polish it. "Please" is a song about terrorism and the troubles in Northern Ireland, but the song and its prophetic lyrics ("September, streets capsizing . . . /Shards of glass, splinters like rain . . .") took on new meaning following 9/11.

In recordings from the Popmart tour, Bono pours out his heart and soul, crying out "please, please," almost desperate, begging. But then, just as your heart starts to break for him, you hear the ping of Larry's drumstick against the cymbal as "Streets" takes off. It's like a security blanket or the voice of an old friend, and with the reassuring sounds of an old favorite, fans know all will be okay.

21. Beautiful Day (2000)

With the release of All That You Can't Leave Behind , U2 once again reinvented themselves, ditching their dance-oriented experimental phase and returning to their roots, albeit with a harder, rock-based sound. "Beautiful Day," the first single from the multiplatinum, Grammy Award-winning album, is a reminder that no matter how bad life can get, we should always be thankful for what we have.

The song went to number five on Billboard 's Modern Rock chart, and it secured three more Grammys for the Dublin lads -- Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Rock Performance.

22. Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of (2001)

"Stuck," the second single from All That You Can't Leave Behind , reached only number 35 on U.S. charts. Nevertheless, this in-your-face number earned the boys another Grammy for Best Pop Performance.

Bono wrote the lyrics as a conversation he wishes he'd had with his friend Michael Hutchence to prevent the INXS singer from committing suicide in 1997. The lyrics are somewhat argumentative with Bono shouting: "You've got to get yourself together/You've got stuck in a moment and now you can't get out of it. . . ." Still, the words are very powerful and uplifting, reminding the downtrodden that "It's just a moment/This time will pass."

23. Elevation (2001)

"Elevation," also from All That You Can't Leave Behind , climbed to number eight on Billboard 's Modern Rock chart and won the band a Grammy for Best Rock Performance. This crowd-pleaser is even better live, so it's not surprising that it appeared in every concert on the Elevation and Vertigo tours.

With Adam's head-bobbing bass line, Edge's grinding chords, and Larry's powerful drumming, "Elevation" is a rockin' tune that makes fans (and Edge) want to jump up and down during live shows. Some feel the song is simply about passion and sexuality. Others feel there is a deeper meaning and that Bono is referring to his spirituality when he sings the tune.

24. Walk On (2001)

"Walk On" scored U2 another Grammy for Record of the Year. This song was supposedly inspired by Aung San Suu Kyi, a nonviolent Burmese political activist who has been under house arrest off and on since 1989.

But many people feel the song is a tribute to someone nearing the end of his life (possibly Bono's father), who realizes that love is really the most important, and only, thing to take on his journey. ("You're packing a suitcase for a place none of us has been/A place that has to be believed to be seen . . ." and "Home . . . I can't say where it is but I know I'm going home.")

During the Elevation tour dates after 9/11, the band took NYC firefighters and police officers on tour with them and brought them onstage during this song, which adopted a special meaning after the terrorist attacks.

25. Vertigo (2004)

"Vertigo" was the first single from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb , which is harder and more upbeat than their previous efforts. No mixed messages with this U2 powerhouse -- "Vertigo" is an adrenalized rocker about an evening at a nightclub.

The song reached number one on Billboard 's Modern Rock chart, garnered the band two more Grammys (Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song), and was featured in a commercial for Apple's iPod. The fellas had so much fun playing the song that it was played at every concert of the Vertigo tour -- sometimes twice!

26. Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own (2005)

U2 racked up two more Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Rock Performance with "Sometimes," which is a tribute to the somewhat distant relationship Bono had with his father, who passed away in 2001. The song reaches a climax when, from the depths of his soul, Bono cries out, "You're the reason I sing/You're the reason why the opera is in me . . . ," and fans are often moved to tears by his display of raw emotion.

27. City of Blinding Lights (2005)

U2 cleaned up at the 2005 Grammys, taking home five awards including Best Rock Song for "City" and Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb . Inspired by Bono's love for New York City and the band's love for their fans ("I miss you when you're not around"), this peppy, upbeat song quickly found a home as the opener on the Vertigo tour with Adam playing the opening notes on the keyboard.

28. The Saints Are Coming (2006)

U2 teamed up with Green Day for this cover of a 1970s punk rock song by The Skids. "Saints," one of two new songs on the compilation album U2 18 Singles , was recorded in the legendary Abbey Road studios in London where The Beatles recorded most of their albums.

The song, which mentions New Orleans, storms, and flooding, took on new meaning when the two bands played it live when the New Orleans Saints returned to the Superdome for the first time following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This energetic and mighty rocker reached number one in Australia, Canada, and all over Europe, but didn't receive much airplay in the States.

29. Window in the Skies (2007)

Another new song from U2 18 Singles , this cheerful, snappy tune was also recorded at Abbey Road studios and has a slight "Beatles" sound to it. Although it didn't fare well on U.S. charts due to lack of airplay, it reached the top ten in many other parts of the world and became an instant fan favorite.

Some argue that the lyrics are about romantic love, but most die-hard fans agree that this one is all about God's love and the grace, redemption, and forgiveness we receive by accepting his gift.

If you’ve been a fan of the rock or pop music scene in the past four decades, there is a good chance you’ve heard about U2. They are one of the longest-running bands out there. Not only have they managed to become a sensation in the music world for over 40 years, but they have managed to become some of the most famous people in the world period. Whether you like their music or not, you know the name U2, and that’s because they’ve managed to transcend music into becoming pop culture icons.

I’ve always been a moderate fan of U2, appreciating what they’ve done for music as a whole while also failing to fall completely in love with the style of music they create. One thing is completely clear, though: their sound is unique, and despite being less complex musically than most famous rock bands out there, they have adapted their sound to each decade they’ve existed in and have managed to score hits that span over 40 decades.

The journey of U2 is a wild one, and that’s always the case when talking about a band that has managed to stay relevant for this long. There is a lot to know about U2 and its members, so let’s go on a journey to see where it all began and just how they managed to take over the world.

U2 Band Logo

U2 is the biggest band to ever come out of Ireland, and that is where the entire history of the band began. It all started in one school, Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin. Sometimes band origin stories seem like they’re completely ripped out of a movie, and with U2, the way they formed is just absurd circumstance-wise.

It started with a simple note on the school’s notice board that was a post for musicians looking to start a band at the school. It was posted by 14-year-old Larry Mullen Jr. The post was responded to quickly by Paul Hewson on vocals (who would go on to be known as Bono,) David Evans on guitar (who would become The Edge,) Dik Evans on guitar, Adam Clayton on Bass, Peter Martin on guitar and Ivan Mccormick.

The band was called The Larry Mullen Band, which, as you can tell by just reading it, is the worst name for a band to ever exist. Larry wanted to be the leader of the band, but that wasn’t going to be the case with Bono in the picture.

Bono took control of the band completely right off the bat, which would paint the picture of the band’s direction. Part of that direction involved getting rid of Martin almost immediately because of his poor guitar-playing abilities.

This would be one of the first big moves Bono would make for the band and would mark his authority in the group, even though he was still only in high school. McCormick was then kicked out of the band as well, leaving the 5 of them remaining in serious need of a name change.

U2 Group Photo

That new name was Feedback, which was original but not the one that would take them to the stratosphere. The band was largely a cover band at first, playing covers of The Clash and The Sex Pistols, the latter of which they would name as one of the biggest influences on the band.

Feedback had their first gig at St. Fintan’s Highschool. The show went well, and they actually got paid for the gig, which spurred yet another name change. It changed to The Hype, but by that time, problems with the band would start standing out, including those with Dik Evans, who was already in college.

His being separate for school led to him being phased out of the band. This quickly led to a four-man band that would become U2. They went with the name because it didn’t really mean anything and would lead people to wonder. Dik Evans would play his last show at a church.

The four-man lineup would go on to define the group for the rest of their career, with Dik Evans likely feeling a sizeable amount of regret for not being able to stay in the band right before they made their big debut.

The First Album Releases Boy

Three years after the band formed, U2 would release their first official single in the form of “11 O’Clock Tick Tock”. It would not be the debut that you’d expect from such a talented band, and the single didn’t hit the charts anywhere. Despite that, the band would start to pick out songs to make their first record.

The band had accumulated a sizable amount of material at this point, and it was during this time that The Edge would get a Delay Effect Unit for his guitar, which lends a delayed echo to guitar sounds, and this would be something that would go to define much of U2’s music.

After the recording went relatively well, the album would release in 1980 and got some pretty great reviews. The album itself would chart in The top 100 in the UK and US. Singles would start pouring out from the band as well, such as “A Day Without Me.”

The album would require a supplemental tour, so they set out to do just that. The tour would span both the USA and Europe. Over time, the first album was a big success, but it still lacked the massive hits that define big-time albums.

U2 Second Album October

The next album was called October, and it would mark a huge moment for the band. The songs “I Will Follow” and “Fire” were both released, and Fire, in particular, became a massive hit. It wasn’t all smooth sailing with the second effort, though, as Bono lost an entire briefcase full of lyrics and musical ideas in a famous and absurd circumstance.

This was back in an era where things had to be written down if they wanted them to be preserved, and whether it was stolen or just misplaced, it was gone for good. This forced the band to quickly write new material while on tour, and when it came time for the recording sessions in the studio, Bono had to improvise the lyrics on the spot.

Despite the craziness that happened with the album, they were able to gain some more recognition, including opening for a big band at the time, Thin Lizzy. The rock and roll lifestyle is never one for the faint of heart, though, and in U2’s case, both Bono and The Edge were part of an intense Christian group called the Shalom Fellowship, which of course, did not support the ways of a rock star’s life.

They eventually realized that their calling was not to be in a Christian group that would cast judgment on their way of life but to be rather world-renowned rock stars who would influence generations of musicians to come.

U2 Third Album War

The band actually had their music ready to go for a new album the third time around. This time, none of the notes were lost or stolen, and the band gave up many of the religious and spiritual themes that seemed to permeate through October and released War in 1982.

For this Album, The Edge had truly defined his sound and songwriting while the rest of the band was on vacation, including Bono. During this time, The Edge toyed around even more with delay effects and added chorus effects to his sound as well, which came out in a big way on the album War.

The big hit off the album was “New Year’s Day,” which soared up the charts in the UK and became the band’s biggest hit to date. U2 finally made its mark in the US as well, charting at number 53. The album dropped shortly after and reached number one in the UK and number 12 in the US. The Edge, in particular, made he made his mark with this album, and Bono’s strong songwriting made its way into War’s more decidedly political themes with songs like “Sunday Bloody Sunday.”

This progression into politically charged music struck a chord with fans worldwide, and suddenly, U2 went from opening for bands like Thin Lizzy to headlining arenas. Bono, in particular, grew into his own during this time as well, becoming a frontman worth paying attention to not only for his unique and soaring vocals but the on-stage presence that included hurling himself into the audience off of massive structures.

He slowly became a figure larger than the band itself, which is why the first thing you think of when it comes to U2 is Bono.

U2 had hit it big by 1984, and with their massive popularity came a new record deal to really put their popularity into income for the band. The band had embraced a pop-rock angle for their last album, becoming arena darlings while tearing up the charts with multiple singles, but the direction of the band wasn’t going to keep going that way.

U2 has always been a very unique sound, and that’s because of their willingness to experiment with various styles, and with their next album, The Unforgettable Fire, that experimentation took flight.

U2 Band Album Unforgettable Fire

When it was released, the band had finally found the sound that would go on to define the rest of their career — powerful and subtle at the same time, with lyrics that range from autobiographical to completely abstract.

The huge hit off the album was “Pride(In the Name of Love),” which gave the band their biggest hit to date. It’s still a massively played song that reverberates throughout the years, with lyrics that reference Martin Luther King.

With their experimental album proving to be one that would give them their biggest hits, U2 decided to double down on their artistic side and give it another go with The Joshua Tree, which was released at number one in twenty different countries. Massive hits came off the album that still get airtime today in “With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.”

U2 Band Album The Joshua Tree

This album established U2 as the biggest rock band in the world in 1987, which was tough to do with the crowded rock landscape that included so many different genres. Still, the album is known as one of the best in rock history, and the accompanying tour they went on was enormous, allowing the band to sell out tons of arenas.

The album would get followed up by Rattle and Hum, which was an enormous album that included live performances and guest appearances. Overall, it wasn’t the follow-up to The Joshua Tree that most were expecting.

Still, despite that, the album reached number one worldwide again, proving the band was pretty much invincible regardless of the types of albums they put out. Rattle and Hum was less a U2 album and more of a mix of all kinds of American music. It featured artists such as B.B. King.

The New Era Begins

The band had been the biggest act in rock for a few years when 1990 hit, but they were clearly in search of a new direction following Rattle and Rum. Their next album would be called Achtung Baby, and the recording wasn’t the smoothest. They had multiple arguments over where the band would go from that point and what style of music the album should have.

It almost led to a complete breakup of the band. The band did not break up. Instead, from the turmoil and arguing came the song “One,” which would become a massive hit and fuel the Fire for the album’s release.

U2 Band Album Achtung Baby

That release came in 1991, and Achtung Baby immediately sounded different than their previous endeavors. It became one of their biggest selling albums of all time and supported five singles, including “One.”

The most interesting song on the album was “Mysterious Ways,” which featured some interesting rhythm guitar and an infectious chorus that at times sounds like a completely different band. The alteration of styles here was something the world was clearly into, and the darker lyrics that filled the album were right in line with the oncoming teen angst of the 1990s.

Once again, U2 managed to release an album that would be called one of the best rock albums of all time. That’s not just hyperbole, as it managed to win the Grammy for Best Rock Performance. That gave U2 two insanely successful albums that would become known as some of the best ever made, a rare feat indeed.

U2 Band Zoo TV Tour

After Achtung Baby took over the world, U2 embarked on a bizarre tour that would see Bono and the band dressing up in different satirizations of the rockstar lifestyle and world events going on in the media.

The tour was defined by several characters that Bono dressed as, including “The Fly,” which saw Bono clad in leather and acting as over the top as possible, almost parodying himself while poking fun at the nature of the rockstar lifestyle. Despite this completely bizarre tour, the audiences across the US ate it up and made it their most lucrative grossing tour ever, coming in at $67 million.

After showing that they were the most popular band in the world, U2 signed the biggest contract in rock and roll history, signing a six-album deal for a whopping $60 million. As soon as the ink was dry, another album came in the form of Zooropa, which got U2 back to experimenting with more sounds, this time in the dance music and industrial style.

Some have noted the similarities to Nine Inch Nails at times with this album, which makes sense as that band was beginning to make a big name for itself at that time as well. The album would become another massive success again, winning the Grammy that year for Best Alternative Music Album this time.

The Lifestyle Catches Up

U2 Band Group Photo

Adam Clayton had been battling alcohol troubles for a long time, as many in the music industry tend to do. The issues were hidden for a while, but during a concert in 1993, he blacked out before a show and couldn’t perform in the show that night.

Luckily, they were able to temporarily find a replacement, and following the show, Clayton pledged to get clean. The tour they were on would eventually conclude in Japan; with Clayton back in the fold and the band operating at full strength, the tour made $151 Million, marking a landmark achievement for any artist.

It had been a long time since the uneven criticisms of their second album, October, had hit, so U2 was bound for a letdown at some point. It came in the form of Pop in 1997. The album was not at all like their previous material, and it was instead the band’s exploration of dance music in a heavier way than Zooropa ever meant to.

Despite the controversial change to their music, it was still released to a great reception. It also debuted at number 1 in more than 30 countries, so the world definitely was up for whatever the band was cooking, although it quickly fell off the charts because of the lack of hits.

The Bounceback Comes with All That You Can’t Leave Behind

U2 understood their audience better than most bands and knew that following the disappointment of Pop, they needed to recapture the sound that turned them into musical gods. With the new millennium in full swing, they needed to get back to their roots, and that’s just what they did with All That You Can’t Leave Behind.

The album was released in 2000, and with the strength of their soaring, positive vibe-laden mega-hit “Beautiful Day,” the band once again took home ht Grammy for Best Rock Performance along with Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

All That You Can't Leave Behind

The album itself didn’t have any groundbreaking sound, but the catchiness of the choruses and melodic riffs were not to be ignored. Bono famously said at the Grammys that year that “U2 was reapplying for the job of the best band in the world.” Despite the lack of modesty, Bono was very right in that assessment, and their performance at the Grammys that year pretty much confirmed they got the job.

It was getting a bit ridiculous for U2 here; I mean, how could they sustain success in yet another decade? The follow-up to All That You Can’t Leave Behind was called How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. It was the band’s 11th studio album.

The album would come four years after their previous effort. Yet again, it absolutely obliterated the charts, selling nine million copies globally and shattering first-week sales records for the band with an insane 840,000 copies sold.

The big hit from the album was “Vertigo,” which famously was featured in Apple’s iPod commercial, giving it even more widespread appeal than it normally would’ve had. The song would be playing everywhere you were in 2004, and I can recall hearing the chorus blasting during everything from football games to walking around in a Starbucks. It was infectious, and the band fed off it to gain another wave of massive popularity.

It was an obvious eventuality at this point, and in 2005, U2 was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while their album was still ripping up the charts. In fact, the following year, U2 would again win Best Rock Album for How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb despite it being two years old at that point.

In 2006, Hurricane Katrina rocked New Orleans to its core, causing tons of damage and killing and displacing many people. U2, in turn, performed a cover of “The Saints Are Coming” by The Skids at the New Orleans Saints’ first home game that NFL Football season. The song would become a huge hit in Australia and Europe. The song would be used as the team’s rallying cry throughout the year as well as in the years since.

U2’s Popularity Dies Down

No band can dominate the charts forever, and U2 found this out with their next album, No Line on the Horizon. It released to enough sales to the tune of five million as well as a number one chart spot in many countries in the world, but it wasn’t looked at as a success by U2, who had become accustomed to setting the world on Fire with each release they’d had to that point.

The big failure of No Line on the Horizon was that there was not a single hit off the album. U2 had always managed multiple hits per album, and there just wasn’t that “It” song on this one.

The tours would not stop for U2, though, as they continued to have massive tour after massive tour following 2009’s No Line on the Horizon. Despite losing popularity with their previous release, U2 was as popular as ever on the concert circuit, again establishing themselves as the biggest rock band in the world.

It had been five years since their last release, so U2 had to do something big this time around, which is exactly what they did. If you were an owner of Itunes in 2014, you suddenly found yourself with the album Songs of Innocence in your library.

I remember seeing it myself and being completely shocked and confused. U2 decided their new album would be automatically installed in 500 million people’s libraries simultaneously.

They were, of course, paid very well by Apple to do this, and while some appreciated the gesture, many completely rejected it and actually got rid of Itunes due to it downloading music to their computers and phones without their permission.

U2 Band Group Photo

The album was nonetheless a success, marking the first time a band’s music had ever been forcefully given to music listeners worldwide. The tour that would follow was put on hold a bit when Bono suffered a serious accident in Central Park while riding his bike. The accident was bad enough that it caused some to doubt his future performing live with the band, but he would recover and head out on tour again.

U2 has been recording and touring in that order in a cyclical nature for the better part of the past 40 years, making it understandable that their releases have become more sporadic in their later days. In 2017, U2 released Songs of Experience, which would be their last album released at this point in time.

The album was received well, and the resulting tour U2 went on was again a massive success, showing the support for the band was still strong despite their somewhat controversial Itunes album, Songs of Innocense.

U2 is still not done in the music industry by a long shot, and recently, The Edge confirmed that U2 is hard at work on their next album. Recently, Bono lent his voice to play a character in the movie Sing 2, introducing U2 to yet another generation that may once again be inspired by their music, which is truly timeless.

U2 Band Group Photo

U2 has a very unique brand of rock that doesn’t sound like anything else. They’ve had tons of hits throughout the years, and it’s hard to categorize any of them. They’ve had hard rock songs such as Vertigo to slow-moving hymns like I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, as well as electronica tracks like Discotheque.

Their style is defined by Bono’s soaring vocals that sound nothing like any other rock band. His voice can hit soaring high notes and go low for the quieter songs.

The Edge has also garnered a ton of praise throughout the years of his skillful songwriting and signature delayed guitar sound that permeates throughout every song the band has ever made. It’s all backed up beautifully with Adam Clayton’s bass work and Larry Mullen’s strong drumming throughout the years.

Unlike most rock bands, U2 has been a chameleon throughout their legendary career, managing to score massive hits in three straight decades while maintaining a huge touring presence as well.

Today, U2 is considered music royalty. They’re one of the highest-selling bands in music history. Bono has also become something of a pop culture icon as well, putting his name behind tons of humanitarian efforts throughout the world. They aren’t often spoken of in the light of The Beatles or Led Zeppelin, but they are very much in that conversation when it comes to the biggest rock bands of all time.

They are on multiple lists of the best rock albums of all time and are known to put on some of the best concerts in music history, constantly creating a full-on spectacle rather than just a normal concert.

Answer: U2 has managed to survive the trials and tribulations of touring better than just about any other band in rock history and are still together to this day with all the original members alive and well. They are also on the verge of releasing a new album, as The Edge has recently confirmed.

Answer: U2 was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, their first year of eligibility.

Answer: U2 formed in a small school in Dublin, Ireland, and are the biggest band to come from Ireland.

With U2's Songs of Experience out everywhere now, I noticed iTunes has deals on their back catalogue . Obviously I have no need for more digital copies of albums from my favourite band but I thought I'd write up some recommendations if Songs of Experience is your first U2 album. Note: Album names will have an iTunes affiliate link. Buy U2 music and make me rich!

Songs of Experience

If you don't have it, go get it. I'd recommend the deluxe version because the St Peter's String Version of "Lights of Home" is worth the upgrade price alone.

it a musical journey u2

You're Stuck in a Moment And Only Want One or Two

Best of 1990-200 / best of 1980-1990.

Normally I'd frown on getting a Best Of collection from any artist - but I know that's often the gateway into their deeper cuts. And if you just want to stop here, you can't go wrong picking up their " Best of 1990-200 " collection. The " Best of 1980-1990 " is great as well but if you've had a radio on at all in your life you've probably heard their 80's hits played and overplayed enough to know if you'd like them or not. The early 90s was U2 hitting their peak in popularity, but radio (at least in Canada where I live) doesn't seem to know what to do with 90s era U2 music.

Achtung - I Will Follow You Deeper, Light My Way

Ok. Skip the greatest hits and get music the way God (yes, Bono) intended it.

Achtung Baby

This is where I show my own entry into U2 - 1991's Achtung Baby was that album that changed them from being a sentimental lovey-dovey rock band (which they still are), into something that felt cool and had an edge[footnote]Pun fully intended[/footnote] to it. From "Zoo Station" all the way to "Love is Blindness", there isn't a track on this album that I don't love and know every word and guitar hook to. If you can find ZooTV Live From Sydney , the concert documentary of the tour that followed this album, you'll have the full U2 immersion experience I did back in the early 90's.

Songs of Innocence

If you had (have?) an iTunes account in 2014 you should already have "Songs of Innocence" since it was given away for free to everyone by Apple. If not, pick it up as a companion to "Songs of Experience". There's plenty of callbacks to this album from SoI that make it worth owning to catch - but by no means is it required listening to enjoy SoE. "Song for Someone", "Iris (Hold Me Close)", "Cedarwood Road", "The Troubles", and "Sleep Like a Baby Tonight"[footnote]Just kidding. Sleep Like a Baby Tonight is terrible. Just seeing if Matt McGee is reading this.[/footnote] are all highlights for me.

It's not every U2 fan's favourite, but mysterious and explorative U2 is my favourite U2. Listening to the opening build up of the opening track throws me right back to early 90's and wondering what kind of musical journey I was about to embark on. "Stay (Faraway, So Close)" is definitely my favourite U2 ballad and in my top 5 U2 tracks.

How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

If, like me, you're sick of that "Vertigo" song then you can safely skip it and enjoy the beautiful "Miracle Drug" / "Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own" combo that, in my opinion, should have started this album. "One Step Closer" and "Yahweh" close out a great album.

The Unforgettable Fire / War

This step is a choose your own adventure: chime-y U2 or 80's rock U2? 1984's The Unforgettable Fire is a beautiful album that's often overshadowed by the popularity of "Pride (In the Name of Love)" in much the same way as How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is by "Vertigo". But "Bad" is U2 at their most U2-ish and "A Sort of Homecoming" is possibly one of their best album openers to date. Whereas 1983's War has the intensity of songs you have likely heard, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day", one of my favourite deep cuts in "Seconds", and closes with "40" - a beautiful lament that closed out many of U2's concerts in the 80s. Both are great albums and if you've come this far, you might as well get both of them because you're not stopping now.

The Joshua Tree

I don't know how you could possibly have escaped hearing the first 3 tracks. But if you're of hearing Bono wail about being with or without you, skip to "Bullet the Blue Sky" - a song that U2 has morphed and twisted over the years to serve whatever political climate they find themselves in while on tour. "Running to Stand Still" is also my favourite U2 ballad (I have a few) and "One Tree Hill", "Exit", and "Mothers of the Disappeared" is an amazing trio of songs to close out an album. You should have this album in your collection. I didn't put it higher on the list because I assumed you'd already have it. There's also deluxe and super deluxe versions of the album if you want to really hear what late 80's U2 sounded like. You know you want to hear "Red Hill Mining Town (Steve Lillywhite 2017 Mix)".

Rattle and Hum

You may have heard of the musical journey U2 went on in making the documentary of the same name, Rattle and Hum is the companion live/studio to The Joshua Tree . It features my other favourite U2 balled, "All I Want is You", concert favourites like "Desire" and "Angel of Harlem", and collaborations with B.B. King ("When Love Comes to Town") and Bob Dylan ("Love Rescue Me"). "Heartland" is not to be missed and should have been included on The Joshua Tree.

It's been theorized that U2 albums come in sets of three, and if that's true then 1997's Pop is the conclusion of what the band started in Achtung Baby and Zooropa. This was the point where I remember a lot of my friend's getting off the U2 ride. Whether it was the choice of "Discotheque" for a single, along with Village People inspired music video, or the accompanying Popmart tour - a lot of my fellow U2 fans/friends at the time decided it was all too much. But there's plenty of amazing songs on this album - especially if The Joshua Tree sounding U2 is your least favourite U2. "Please" is one of the most beautiful political songs they've written. "If God Will Send His Angels" is certainly one of my favourite U2 ballads and takes me back to Christmas in Dublin when I found a copy of the single I'd been looking for. "Gone" is a screamer of a tune, especially live. I think if they'd committed all the way to the themes they started out with on the first half of the record, this could've been an amazing experiment. But it feels like they got cold feet and needed to reign in the beats a bit and have more standard U2 sounding songs.

A Trip Through Your Wires

I chose to journey back through U2 by album as opposed to picking songs you might like. And so with that criteria in mind, the rest of U2's records all have great songs on them but aren't as interesting or necessary[footnote]Feel free to argue and disagree in the comments below - just remember that I wrote this on very little sleep and kept getting pulled away to help my son puke into a bucket. We are rock and roll![/footnote] if you're trying to get your audio hooks into U2. The rest of their albums are listed in no particular order. Choose your own adventure on your U2 musical journey.

All That You Can’t Leave Behind

A return to form after Pop - but it left a bit of a "trying to make a popular record" taste in my mouth. That said, it's a heck of a record. "Beautiful Day" is a great song, start to finish. "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" is the brightest sounding description of depression and suicide. "Kite" is a love letter to Bono's young kids. "In a Little While" is my favourite U2 song to play on guitar. "Peace on Earth" is a beautiful companion to Pop's "Please". You won't be disappointed in the album. I was only disappointed, at the time, that they didn't continue experimenting after Pop.

No Line on the Horizon

This is the completion of the 2000's trilogy that started with All That You Can’t Leave Behind and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb . In some alternate universe, I envision U2's albums released in the 2000s coming out in the reverse order and it all makes more sense to me. "Breathe", "Stand Up Comedy", and "Get On Your Boots" are fun rock songs. "Magnificent" became much better for my ears after hearing it live on tour. But you'd be forgiven if you skipped No Line on the Horizon in my books. As a hardcore U2 fan, I find it an interesting experiment - not as good as the Zooropa experiment - but still, an interesting exploration of writing and recording.

To this day, I have a hard time getting into this album. "October" is a beautiful piano ballad. "Gloria" is U2 filled with their most religious 80s rock righteousness. I know some U2 fans will flame me for it, but I just have a hard time getting into early 80's U2. #AchtungBaby4ever

Despite having slammed October one paragraph ago, I have no trouble loving Boy . If you're going to follow U2 in the 90s, 2000's, and beyond - you have to at least be willing to see where they came from. "I Will Follow", "Into the Heart", "Out of Control", and "The Electric Co." are incredible songs for a band's first album.

Wide Awake in America / Under a Blood Red Sky / Live from Paris

I don't know how universally true this is, but for bands like U2, their songs come alive in concert. Whatever the staging and production they might choose, every time I hear a new U2 song for the first time I start imagining how they might perform it live on tour. Songs that I couldn't find a place for on the album suddenly change into something I need to hear once I've heard or seen it live. On their recent 30th Anniversary Joshua Tree tour, U2 took "Exit", already a fan favourite for sure, to a whole different level with the live performance of it. So while live isn't necessarily the best place to hear a song for the first time, it's almost a required experience for me if you're saying you just can't get into U2.

There's Been A Lot of Talk About This Next Song

...maybe, maybe too much talk. If you've read this far and have a comment on something you disagree with or maybe I've dissed your favourite song - by all means, leave a comment below. But if you're a fellow hardcore U2 fan - know that: a) I love you. You're part of my tribe. b) I think U2 is great. I love their music, their lyrics, their tours. c) As great as U2 is, I think it's fun to critique, debate, and discuss art. Which is why I have a lot of fun hosting the @U2 Podcast where we get to do exactly that - subscribe in Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. d) Be polite or I'll delete your comment. If I wait a week and rewrite this, the albums would probably tumble out in a different order. The songs I like and am drawn to are influenced by what's going on in my life. U2 has influenced my faith, my guitar, my relationships, and my mind in a way that no other musical artist has. I can't wait to hear their next album.

U2 Albums in Order Images

U2 Albums in Order: From their inception in 1976 as a group of school friends in Dublin to their recent release of “Songs of Surrender” in 2023, the legendary Irish rock band U2 has left an indelible mark on the music world.

U2, the iconic Irish rock band hailing from Dublin, has etched an indelible mark on the music industry since their formation in 1976. Comprising the talents of Bono (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), the Edge (lead guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums and percussion), the band’s journey from humble beginnings as teenage students at Mount Temple Comprehensive School to global stardom is nothing short of remarkable.

U2’s evolution from post-punk roots to their distinctive anthemic sound, characterized by Bono’s emotive vocals and the Edge’s effects-laden guitar work, has captivated audiences worldwide. Lyrically, Bono’s songs often weave personal narratives with poignant sociopolitical themes, augmented by spiritual imagery. Renowned for their electrifying live performances, U2’s elaborate tours have become legendary. With a discography that spans 15 studio albums, including the chart-topping “The Joshua Tree,” and a staggering estimated 150-170 million records sold globally, U2 has solidified their place as one of the world’s best-selling music artists.

Their humanitarian efforts, commitment to human rights, and numerous accolades, including 22 Grammy Awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, further exemplify their impact beyond the realm of music. In 2023, they continue to innovate with “Songs of Surrender,” a collection of reimagined classics from their storied career, cementing their status as living legends in the world of rock music. • A Day Without Me
  • Another Time, Another Place
  • The Electric Co.
  • Shadows and Tall Trees

“Boy” stands as the debut studio album by the illustrious Irish rock band U2. Released on October 20, 1980, under Island Records and produced by Steve Lillywhite, it drew from a selection of 40 songs the band had in their repertoire at the time. Recorded at Dublin’s Windmill Lane Studios over three months, the album featured unconventional recording techniques, such as capturing drummer Larry Mullen Jr. in a stairwell and incorporating sounds like smashed bottles and cutlery against a spinning bicycle wheel.

Thematically, “Boy” delves into themes of adolescence, innocence, and the transition to adulthood, evident in its cover art. It garnered positive reviews, introduced the U.S. to “I Will Follow,” and set the stage for their inaugural tour, the Boy Tour. Rolling Stone later included it on their list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” solidifying its place in music history.

2. October (1981)

U2 Album October image

  • I Fall Down
  • I Threw a Brick Through a Window
  • With a Shout (Jerusalem)
  • Stranger in a Strange Land
  • Is That All?

“October” stands as the second studio album by Irish rock luminaries U2, unveiled on October 12, 1981, under the production helm of Steve Lillywhite and released by Island Records. This album was profoundly influenced by the band members’ involvement in the Shalom Fellowship, a Christian group, infusing the record with spiritual and religious undertones.

As U2 grappled with the interplay between faith and the “rock and roll” lifestyle, the band faced potential dissolution. Following their 1981 Boy Tour leg, they delved into the creation of “October” in July 1981 at Windmill Lane Studios, albeit under challenging circumstances, as Bono’s lost briefcase forced a frantic, improvisational approach to completing the album. Despite mixed reviews and limited radio play, “October” remains a significant chapter in U2’s musical journey, later receiving a remastered edition in 2008.

3. War (1983)

U2 Album War image

  • Sunday Bloody Sunday
  • New Year’s Day
  • Like a Song…
  • Drowning Man
  • The Refugee
  • Two Hearts Beat as One

“War,” the third studio album by Irish rock band U2, emerged on February 28, 1983, produced by Steve Lillywhite and released under Island Records. Marked as U2’s inaugural overtly political endeavor, it tackled themes of conflict, reflected in iconic tracks like “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “New Year’s Day.” U2 recorded the album at Windmill Lane Studios from September to November 1982, with Lillywhite, their longtime collaborator. In contrast to previous albums centered on adolescence and spirituality, “War” delved into the physical and emotional aspects of warfare. It showcased a harsher musical edge, turning pacifism into a crusade.

The album achieved commercial triumph, reaching number one in the UK and earning gold certification in the US. Its enduring impact is reflected in its inclusion in Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”

4. The Unforgettable Fire (1984)

U2 Album The Unforgettable Fire image

  • A Sort of Homecoming
  • Pride (In the Name of Love)
  • The Unforgettable Fire
  • 4th of July
  • Indian Summer Sky
  • Elvis Presley and America

“The Unforgettable Fire,” U2’s fourth studio album, marked a pivotal moment in the band’s musical evolution. Released on October 1, 1984, and produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, it represented a deliberate shift from the hard-hitting rock of their previous work, “War” (1983). Recorded at Slane Castle and Windmill Lane Studios, the album introduced an ambient sound characterized by atmospheric melodies and Bono’s lyrical sketches. The title itself was inspired by an art exhibit about the Hiroshima atomic bombing. Notably, it featured the hit “Pride (In the Name of Love),” a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., and remains a fan favorite. A 25th-anniversary edition further celebrated this influential record in 2009.

5. The Joshua Tree (1987)

  • With or Without You

  • Trip Through Your Wires
  • One Tree Hill
  • Mothers of the Disappeared

“The Joshua Tree,” U2’s fifth studio album, released on March 9, 1987, represents a pivotal moment in the band’s career. Produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, it marked a departure from the ambient sound of its predecessor, “The Unforgettable Fire,” embracing a harder-hitting musical style. The album’s themes are deeply rooted in American experiences, literature, and politics, exploring the contrast between the “real America” and the “mythical America.” It was recorded in Ireland and reflects the band’s fascination with American landscapes. Critically acclaimed, it topped charts worldwide, yielding iconic hits like “With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.”

The Joshua Tree remains one of the best-selling and culturally significant albums in music history, earning numerous awards and accolades, including Grammys and a place in the US National Recording Registry.

“Rattle and Hum” is a significant moment in U2’s musical journey, released as a hybrid live/studio album and accompanied by a rockumentary film in 1988. Produced by Jimmy Iovine, the album emerged on October 10, 1988, with the Phil Joanou-directed film following on October 27. Building on the triumph of their previous album, “The Joshua Tree,” this project delves into American roots music, blending blues rock, folk rock, and gospel with their signature sound during the Joshua Tree Tour.

The collection features new studio tracks, live performances, and collaborations with legends like Bob Dylan and B.B. King. While met with mixed reviews, the album sold 14 million copies and produced hits like “Desire,” marking a transitional point in U2’s creative journey.

“Achtung Baby,” the seventh studio album by the iconic Irish rock band U2, marked a pivotal moment in their career when it was released on November 18, 1991. Produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, the album represented a significant departure from their previous work. Criticized for their 1988 release, “Rattle and Hum,” U2 embraced alternative rock, industrial music, and electronic dance music influences, resulting in a darker and more introspective thematic tone.

Recorded at Berlin’s Hansa Studios, the sessions were characterized by conflict and self-doubt, eventually leading to a breakthrough with the creation of “One.” “Achtung Baby” debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and sold 18 million copies worldwide, earning critical acclaim and a Grammy Award. It remains one of U2’s greatest albums, celebrated for its innovation and impact.

8. Zooropa (1993)

U2 Album Zooropa image

  • Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
  • Daddy’s Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car
  • Some Days Are Better Than Others
  • The First Time
  • The Wanderer

“Zooropa,” the eighth studio album by Irish rock band U2, emerged as a sonic exploration released on July 5, 1993, under the guidance of producers Flood, Brian Eno, and the Edge. Inspired by the tech-savvy and media-saturated landscape experienced during the Zoo TV Tour, the album delved into themes of technology and oversaturation. Building on the experimental foundation of their previous album, “Achtung Baby” (1991), “Zooropa” was originally conceived as an EP but evolved into a full-length record during its rapid six-month creation.

Despite its singles not achieving consistent success, the album garnered positive reviews and sold impressively, earning the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 1994. Though seen as creatively significant, U2’s feelings toward “Zooropa” remain mixed.

9. Pop (1997)

U2 Album Pop image

  • Discothèque
  • Do You Feel Loved
  • If God Will Send His Angels
  • Staring at the Sun
  • Last Night on Earth
  • The Playboy Mansion
  • If You Wear That Velvet Dress

“Pop” marks U2’s ninth studio album, released on March 3, 1997, produced by Flood, Howie B, and Steve Osborne. This offering epitomized the band’s musical evolution during the 1990s, blending alternative rock, techno, dance, and electronica influences. Innovative production techniques, such as sampling, loops, and programmed drum machines, defined the album’s sound. Recording commenced in 1995 with a lineup of accomplished producers, including Nellee Hooper, but faced hurdles, including drummer Larry Mullen Jr.’s temporary absence due to injury.

The band’s decision to rush completion for their PopMart Tour hindered the album’s outcome. Despite an initial favorable reception and chart-topping success, “Pop” suffered from mixed reviews, modest sales, and re-recordings that affected tour quality.

Produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, it marked a return to the band’s earlier sound after experimenting with alternative and dance music in the 1990s. Originally named “U2000,” the album achieved immense success, topping charts in 32 countries and selling over 12 million copies.

It featured hit singles like “Beautiful Day,” “Walk On,” “Elevation,” and “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of,” earning seven Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year for both “Beautiful Day” and “Walk On.” In 2003, it was ranked 139th on Rolling Stone’s “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list. A reissue in 2020 celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Produced by a team of talents including Steve Lillywhite, Chris Thomas, Jacknife Lee, and others, the album marks a return to a more mainstream rock sound. U2’s creative journey for this record began in February 2003, and after extensive work and dissatisfaction, they brought in Lillywhite to reshape the material.

Thematically, the album delves into profound subjects like life, death, love, war, faith, and family. It garnered critical acclaim, topped charts in 30 countries, and won numerous Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, making it one of U2’s most successful releases.

Originally conceived as two EPs, the album took shape under the production of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite. Inspired by their time in Fez, Morocco, U2 aimed to create “future hymns” with exotic influences, resulting in a more experimental sound. Although not as radical as initially suggested, the album received favorable reviews, debuting at number one in 30 countries.

Despite expectations, it sold five million copies, leading to U2’s ambitious U2 360° Tour, which became the highest-grossing concert tour in history, raking in over $736 million.

It was unveiled at an Apple Inc. product launch and gifted to all iTunes Store customers worldwide. This unprecedented digital release, promoted as “the largest album release of all time,” reached over 500 million iTunes users. Thematically, the album delves into the band members’ Irish youth, blending childhood memories, love, and loss, while paying homage to musical influences like the Ramones and the Clash.

Despite mixed reviews and controversy surrounding its digital distribution, “Songs of Innocence” left a lasting mark on U2’s discography, earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Album and sparking a successful tour.

Lead vocalist Bono pens a collection of heartfelt letters to significant people and places in his life. The album features guest appearances from notable artists like Haim, Kendrick Lamar, and Lady Gaga. “Songs of Experience” underwent a transformation during its creation, responding to shifting global politics and Bono’s personal experiences.

It serves as a companion piece to Bono’s memoir, “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story” (2022), where each chapter is named after a U2 song. Recorded over two years during the COVID-19 pandemic, the album saw collaboration with various producers and musicians. Despite mixed critical reception, it debuted at number one on European charts and marked U2’s 11th number-one album in the UK. Running to Gaga: Lady Gaga Jazz and Piano

This show was so spectacularly moving for me. I love these eras of music and fashion. I grew up listening to my dad’s big band albums, watching re-runs of Sinatra, Rogers, Astaire, and Kelly dancing and singing in these amazing Hollywood movie sets. I LOVE this music, these styles.

It was truly the perfect trifecta of music, fashion and Gaga.

Seeing Harry and Inhaler twenty years later at Slane felt like it would be a perfect closure to that story. Finally experiencing Slane. Finally seeing Harry for the first time. Finally seeing Inhaler for the first time. And, well, there are some concerts that demand you see them more than once. Instinctually, incorrigibly, inevitably, I knew I’d want, no NEED, to see more than one.

And so I also got tickets to Wembley 1 and 2…

U2's Electrifying Debut: Unveiling 'Atomic City' on Fremont Street!

In an exciting surprise event on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, the legendary band U2 premiered their latest creation, "Atomic City," during a pop-up concert and music video shoot. Fans were treated to an electrifying performance, setting the stage for the band's upcoming U2 UV: Achtung Baby residency at the massive MSG Sphere.

Adding to the excitement, Bono reminisced about their prior stint on Fremont Street while filming the iconic "I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking" video in 1987 during The Joshua Tree Tour. A notable highlight of the event was the presence of drummer Larry Mullen Jr., who, despite recovering from back surgery, joined the band for the video shoot. Unraveling the Unforgettable Fire: U2's Timeless Masterpiece

Hello U2 fans! Today, we delve into the iconic album that left an indelible mark on the rock music scene - " The Unforgettable Fire. " Released in 1984, this album showcased U2's evolution as artists and solidified their position as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Let's take a closer look at each of the songs and the profound meaning behind their lyrics.

1. A Sort of Homecoming

"A Sort of Homecoming" is a fitting opener for the album, featuring ethereal guitar work by The Edge and Bono's soul-stirring vocals. The song is a reflection on Bono's experiences with a U2 tour of America. It captures the bittersweet emotions of returning home after being on the road for a long time. The lyrics evoke images of the Irish landscape and the feeling of longing for familiar surroundings. The theme of searching for a sense of belonging is a recurring motif in U2's music.

2. Pride (In the Name of Love)

it a musical journey u2

"Pride (In the Name of Love)" is an anthem of hope and a tribute to the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Bono was inspired to write the song after reading a biography of King, which profoundly affected him. The lyrics explore the themes of non-violence, civil rights, and the struggle for justice. With its powerful chorus and soaring melodies, the song became one of U2's biggest hits and continues to be an emblem of the band's social activism.

"Wire" delves into the darker side of life, addressing the theme of addiction. During the making of "The Unforgettable Fire," U2 was dealing with the impact of heroin addiction on their friends and peers back in Dublin. The song's frenetic rhythm and urgent lyrics mirror the chaotic and destructive nature of drug dependence. It serves as a stark reminder of the challenges individuals face when caught in the grips of addiction.

4. The Unforgettable Fire

The title track, "The Unforgettable Fire," was inspired by a collection of photographs taken by the band's friend, Bill Carter. The photos captured the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The song's lyrics are introspective and cryptic, reflecting on the horrors of war, the nature of memory, and the human capacity for destruction. The shimmering guitar work and haunting vocals create an atmospheric soundscape that perfectly complements the weight of the subject matter.

5. Promenade

"Promenade" is a short and elegant instrumental piece that serves as a bridge between tracks. Its gentle melody and dreamlike quality offer a moment of respite, allowing listeners to reflect on the themes presented so far and prepare for the emotional journey ahead.

6. 4th of July

"4th of July" is a deeply personal song for Bono, inspired by the death of his mother when he was just 14 years old. The lyrics capture the emotions of grief and loss, describing the scene of her passing. The haunting guitar and subdued vocals convey a sense of vulnerability and longing, making it one of the most emotionally charged tracks on the album.

"Bad" is an epic and emotionally charged song that stands as one of U2's finest compositions. It was influenced by Bono's experiences with heroin addicts in Dublin's Ballymun flats. The song weaves together themes of addiction, redemption, and human connection. The powerful crescendos and Bono's impassioned delivery make "Bad" an unforgettable track, both on the album and in their live performances.

8. Indian Summer Sky

"Indian Summer Sky" shifts the album's mood with a more upbeat and experimental sound. The lyrics are abstract and open to interpretation, touching on themes of renewal, hope, and the transient nature of life. The song features strong percussion and a catchy guitar riff, showcasing U2's ability to explore diverse musical territories.

9. Elvis Presley and America

This introspective track reflects on the cultural impact of Elvis Presley and the complexities of American society. The song's lyrics juxtapose imagery of Elvis with broader social commentary, touching on themes of fame, identity, and the American dream. It's a reflective and thought-provoking piece that showcases the band's maturity as songwriters.

The album concludes with "MLK," a simple and poignant tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. The song's minimalistic approach, featuring only Bono's vocals and ethereal keyboards, adds to the solemnity of the message. "MLK" serves as a fitting conclusion, leaving listeners with a sense of reflection and reverence for King's legacy.

"The Unforgettable Fire" is a testament to U2's artistic growth and their unwavering commitment to addressing profound themes in their music. As we have explored each song in this album, we find ourselves immersed in a rich tapestry of emotions and ideas that continue to captivate U2 fans around the world.

From the opening notes of "A Sort of Homecoming," we are transported into the world of U2's Irish roots, where nostalgia and longing intertwine, leaving us with a sense of yearning for the familiar. This theme of searching for a sense of belonging resonates with listeners on a deeply personal level, making the song an enduring favorite.

"Pride (In the Name of Love)" is a powerful anthem that reverberates with the spirit of hope and activism. U2's tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. not only celebrates the legacy of a civil rights icon but also encourages us to stand up for justice and equality in our own lives. The song's universal message has made it an anthem for various social justice movements, igniting the passion of U2 fans across generations.

"Wire" delves into the shadows of addiction, confronting the harsh realities of substance abuse with unyielding honesty. The band's personal experiences with the devastating effects of heroin addiction gave the song a raw and authentic edge, and its urgency serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles that many face in their lives.

The title track, "The Unforgettable Fire," takes us on a haunting journey through the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The dreamlike ambiance and thought-provoking lyrics invite introspection and contemplation of the human capacity for both destruction and resilience. This song remains a powerful testament to the band's ability to use music as a means of reflection on global issues.

As we drift into the instrumental "Promenade," we are given a moment to breathe and reflect on the emotional intensity of the album thus far. Its delicate melodies offer a gentle respite before the emotionally charged "4th of July" emerges, carrying us through the painful landscape of grief and loss. Bono's personal connection to the song makes it all the more poignant and relatable.

"Bad" emerges as a standout track, showcasing U2's ability to weave a powerful narrative within a song. Addressing addiction, redemption, and human connection, the song's climactic build-up becomes an immersive experience that has become a highlight of their live performances. It is a profound reminder of the redemptive power of human connection in the face of personal struggles.

"Indian Summer Sky" introduces us to a more experimental and upbeat side of U2, offering a refreshing contrast to the album's contemplative moments. Its abstract lyrics spark curiosity and encourage listeners to interpret the song's meaning in their own way, adding depth and intrigue to the album's overall composition.

"Elvis Presley and America" serves as a deep introspection into the cultural impact of Elvis Presley and the complexities of American society. U2's exploration of fame, identity, and the American dream allows listeners to reflect on the ever-changing nature of cultural icons and their influence on society.

Finally, the album concludes with "MLK," a tender and minimalist tribute to the vision of Martin Luther King Jr. Its simplicity amplifies the weight of King's message, encouraging us to reflect on his legacy and the ongoing fight for civil rights and social justice.

"The Unforgettable Fire" is an album that transcends time and continues to inspire U2 fans worldwide. With its poetic lyricism, innovative soundscapes, and profound themes, the album stands as a timeless masterpiece in the rock music canon. As we celebrate this enduring work of art, let us remember the impact U2 has had on the world and continue to cherish their legacy as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. #U2Forever #TheUnforgettableFire #RockMusicMasterpiece

This blog post invites you to explore the extraordinary story of U2, a band that emerged from humble beginnings to become a global rock phenomenon.

As we traverse the years, we'll witness the band's early days, when they were just a group of passionate teenagers with big dreams. From their debut album "Boy" to the ethereal soundscapes of "The Unforgettable Fire," and the seismic impact of "The Joshua Tree," we'll delve into the key moments that defined their early years. But that's not all; we'll also uncover how U2 masterfully navigated musical evolution, experimenting with different styles, and fearlessly reinventing themselves with albums like "Achtung Baby" and "Pop."

While revisiting their classic sound, U2 didn't shy away from embracing modern influences, keeping their artistic compass firmly pointed towards the future. We'll unravel how they continued to captivate audiences with albums like "All That You Can't Leave Behind" and "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb." With a blend of nostalgia and innovation, U2 proved that they were not just a band of the past but a driving force in the present.

So, fasten your seatbelts, music enthusiasts, as we embark on a journey through U2's iconic career, exploring the highs and lows, the transformations, and the unwavering spirit that has made them the legends we know and love today. Let the rock anthems and melodic ballads be our guides as we traverse the remarkable musical landscape of U2, a band whose artistry continues to resonate with hearts around the world.

Formative Years and Unforgettable Debut: U2 formed in 1976 when four young friends - Bono (vocals), The Edge (guitar), Adam Clayton (bass), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums) - came together in Dublin. Their early music was heavily influenced by punk and post-punk, and they quickly gained attention for their raw energy and social consciousness. Their debut album, "Boy," released in 1980, featured tracks like "I Will Follow" and "An Cat Dubh," showcasing the band's youthful enthusiasm and poetic lyricism.

The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree: U2's evolution continued with "The Unforgettable Fire" (1984), a turning point where they began experimenting with ambient and atmospheric sounds. The album's title track, along with "Pride (In the Name of Love)," demonstrated a newfound maturity in their songwriting. However, it was their 1987 release, "The Joshua Tree," that catapulted U2 to international superstardom. With hits like "With or Without You" and "Where the Streets Have No Name," the album blended anthemic rock with spiritual themes, marking a defining moment in their career.

Achtung Baby and the Reinvention: As the '80s turned into the '90s, U2 underwent a significant musical reinvention with their album "Achtung Baby" (1991). Embracing alternative rock and electronic elements, the band explored themes of love and loss, exemplified in tracks such as "One" and "Mysterious Ways." The accompanying "Zoo TV Tour" showcased a visually and sonically innovative stage production, solidifying U2's reputation as a forward-thinking band.

Pop and the Experimental Phase: With "Pop" (1997), U2 delved further into experimentation, incorporating techno and dance influences. While some critics found the album polarizing, tracks like "Discothèque" and "Staring at the Sun" showcased the band's willingness to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories.

Revisiting Classic Sounds: In the 2000s, U2 revisited their classic sound, embracing a more straightforward rock approach. Albums like "All That You Can't Leave Behind" (2000) and "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" (2004) featured a return to the anthemic rock that had characterized their earlier work. Key tracks like "Beautiful Day" and "Vertigo" showcased U2's ability to create timeless and uplifting rock anthems.

The Current U2: As U2 moved into the 2010s and beyond, they continued to evolve while staying true to their roots. Albums like "Songs of Innocence" (2014) and "Songs of Experience" (2017) displayed a balance between introspection and social commentary. Collaborations with modern producers and artists, such as Ryan Tedder and Kendrick Lamar, showed their willingness to stay relevant and experiment with contemporary trends.

As we reach the final chords of this musical odyssey, one thing becomes abundantly clear - U2's journey is a testament to the enduring power of passion, innovation, and authenticity in the world of rock music. From their humble origins in the vibrant Dublin music scene to their status as global icons, the band has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their craft.

U2's early years were marked by a hunger to make a difference, both musically and socially. Through their debut album "Boy" and the ethereal landscapes of "The Unforgettable Fire," they showed a maturity beyond their years, channeling raw emotions and social commentary into their music.

With "The Joshua Tree," U2 not only etched their names in rock history but also defined a generation with their anthemic rock and spiritual themes. Their experimentation with "Achtung Baby" and the techno-infused "Pop" showcased a fearlessness in breaking boundaries and reinventing themselves.

However, what truly sets U2 apart is their ability to remain relevant while honoring their roots. The band's return to a more classic sound with albums like "All That You Can't Leave Behind" and "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" revealed their deep understanding of their musical identity and their fans' desires. U2's timeless rock anthems have served as anthems for hope and inspiration, uniting people from diverse backgrounds and generations.

But U2's evolution didn't end there. With albums like "Songs of Innocence" and "Songs of Experience," they explored introspection and the passage of time, revealing a vulnerability that only strengthened their connection with listeners.

As we bid farewell to this musical journey, U2's legacy stands tall - a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries, spark change, and touch the depths of our souls. Their unwavering pursuit of authenticity and their readiness to embrace new sounds continue to inspire artists and music lovers alike.

So, let us celebrate U2, a band that reminds us that greatness is not achieved overnight but through perseverance, exploration, and a deep-rooted love for the art of music. As they continue to tour and create, we eagerly anticipate what lies ahead for this timeless rock phenomenon. With U2, the journey is never-ending, and the music, forever enchanting.

Bono has spent four decades telegraphing messages of love, longing, and activism to the masses, fronting one of the most successful acts in the world. But until now, he's channeled his faith and fury only through music. With his new memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story , the rock star and social justice champion (real name: Paul David Hewson) unveils the origins and meaning behind some o f U2' s most enduring tracks.

Ushering fans from the '70s to the present, the singer sheds light on his fraught upbringing (born in Dublin to a Catholic father and Protestant mother, he grew up amid rising sectarian violence in Ireland); his lasting romance with his wife, Ali (whom he began courting soon after the band formed); and the secrets to keeping his lauded (22 Grammys and counting) group together despite creative differences and personal turmoil.

George Clooney, U2, Gladys Knight among next Kennedy Center honorees

U2, actor-filmmaker George Clooney, singers Gladys Knight and Amy Grant, and composer-conductor Tania LeĂłn will be saluted for their achievements in the arts at the 45th annual Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 4 at the national arts center.

The Sunday night performance is the centerpiece of a weekend that includes a private dinner when the distinctive rainbow medals are presented and a fundraising gala for thousands following the Opera House show. The production, with its top-secret lineup of guests, will be broadcast later on CBS.

The 2022 honorees represent the best of the entertainment world, said Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter, but they have also used their talents to inspire change.

“In each case, these are artists who are doing more than being performers. They are artists as citizens who are giving back and making the world a better place through art,” Rutter said, citing the philanthropic, humanitarian and educational contributions made by each. “It’s about art for life’s sake. These artists are a mirror to who we are.”

Fan sites and Fans

What is next for U2? The world has been a different place since the start of U2. Fans, most of them are now in their 50s plus, and life moves on—kids, wives, husbands, jobs, retirement, and covid. It's a different time for all of us. The music was considered an anthem for all that we wanted to say. Sure, Bono is a bit more political than the rest of the group; thus, we embraced the differences of each member of the band. It's been a while since we heard from the boys, management, or anyone related to U2.

Social media site has been pushing out content. Frankly, any staffer can do that. Now comes the extended fans sites. Have you noticed a few of them have already gone dark? Yes, off-line and wrapped up. Sure we have been thinking about it. We have other projects and now a busy tour season. We harken back to the days of fans connecting and sharing, and we think we could all use a reconnecting. Sure some fans have acted very childishly and as if they are the protectors of all that is U2. Heck, the world needs punters; yes, I said PUNTERS when you act a fool, the word fits. Fans are no different from the real world—anyway, enough of that—the question we face. Is it time for us to go dark as well? Wrap it up and call it a day. We have thousands of hours of concert videos, photos, and content. What should we do with all of that? What is next for us? Frankly, I have not a clue. I miss the connection, and I miss engagements, yet I know we are all moving in a different direction. Spring arrives in New York in a few weeks, and the world is opening up again. Maybe the next chapter is under development, and all we need to do is have faith. Meantime let's turn up some tunes and remember those great times when life was full of all that we loved. U2!

Bono has some thoughts about Coldplay .

During BBC Sounds' eight-part series  Music Uncovered: The Genius of Coldplay , the U2 frontman, 64, said that Coldplay "are not a rock band" while also insisting they shouldn't be "judged" by those guidelines by music fans.

In the podcast, which details the British band's career trajectory and rise, the "With or Without You" artist with fellow musicians and key collaborators.

While discussing Coldplay's 2002 hit "Clocks," Bono said, “It just sort of sticks to you, tighter than time itself.”

He added that he recalled “punching the air in a manly but not aggressive way” when he initially heard the song, “and then the feeling of, ‘Oh, this is just better than anyone else’s song at the moment.'"

Bono then spoke his opinion on the band's genre.

“I should mention Coldplay are not a rock band. I hope that’s obvious. There is something much more interesting going on there like the Isley Brothers or something," the "Beautiful Day" singer said.

Bono continued: “They should not be judged by rock rules… Rage is the river running under most rock formations. Coldplay’s music has a different source and I think it’s best revealed in this song ‘Clocks.'"

In December 2021, Martin, 47, revealed in an interview with  Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2  that the group's intention is to wrap up making new music by 2025.

"Well I know I can tell you, our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour," he said during the interview.
