Professional Tour Guiding 2: Research & Storytelling

Next course: may 28, 2024 - july 23, 2024.

This course is for new and seasoned tour guides, as well as anyone interested in research and storytelling techniques. You will learn techniques and resources to enhance your research and storytelling skills and build better tours. Class sessions will consist of lectures, workshops, and guest speaker presentations from research facilities such as The Historic New Orleans Collection, Louisiana Research Collection, New Orleans Public Library, Louisiana State Museum, and Amistad Research Center. You will choose at least one subject to investigate and give weekly reports in class as you hone your storytelling technique. The last class meeting is a field trip with guided walking tour. 

Professional Tour Guiding 1: History of New Orleans is not required to take this course. 

Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a Loyola University New Orleans Certificate of Completion and 1.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

The Office of Professional and Continuing Studies (PACS) received a grant from the  New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund  supporting professional development for aspiring and seasoned tour guides of New Orleans. PACS has extended the NOTCF scholarship application deadline to award 1 full tuition scholarship and 1 partial tuition scholarship to eligible applicants.

The mission of the  New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund  is to support cultural industries and culture bearers of the City of New Orleans through partnerships, grants, and programs to advance sustainable tourism.

For instance, if it’s a walking or biking tour, and the rest point is 30 minutes away but the group members are struggling, possibly due to weather conditions or preexisting health issues, the tour guide might decide to take an early break to ensure the overall experience isn’t too strenuous for the group. This is why tour guides who can easily assess situations and make prompt decisions, instead of strictly adhering to the script or itinerary, are crucial. And to do all this while keeping guests of all speeds engaged takes skill.

“ I was already in the industry. I did the course many years ago and wanted to refresh .  I had worked on the other side of the industry in coordination and then went abroad too so I was keen to learn new material and  possibly  cons ider  teaching the course.

The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) holds monthly meetings the second Wednesday of each month at 7 pm which feature a guest speaker on a topic of historical significance in Philadelphia or a field trip for a behind-the-scenes tour of a local historic site.

Meetings are open to aspiring and working tour guides as well as anyone with an interest in Philadelphia-focused history. Attend one meeting for free and then it is $60 to join the association for the year or $10 per monthly meeting event.

Please join us for convivial company, good food, fascinating presentations, and lively discussions. 

The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) was founded in 2008 to bring professional and volunteer guides together, to act as a voice for our membership, and to ensure a high quality experience for every visitor in our city. The Association conducts the Education and Certification Program for Philadelphia city guides. APT, with a membership of approximately 170 in April 2024 (about 40 corporate and 140 individual), is a Pennsylvania 501(c)6 non-profit organization.

Philadelphia tour guides take great pride in the services they provide to visitors and local residents exploring the rich historical, architectural, and cultural resources of Philadelphia.
