What To Do If You Get Sick Or Injured During Your Disney World Visit

Last Updated on February 23, 2022

What to do and how to deal when you or a loved one gets sick while on vacation at Disney World. Tips on how to manage it and help get better.

The only thing worst than being sick just before heading to Disney and considering canceling your vacation is getting sick or injured during your vacation. We’ve compiled a helpful guide on what to do should you get sick or injured at Walt Disney World Resort.

We’ve had our fair share of sniffles on holiday but being sick or injured at Disney World seems to come with another layer of misery.

Disney World is just like visiting a major international city there are so many guests flying in from out of state, if not out of Country. It can be overwhelming to navigate the wonderful world of health care while also trying to keep the Disney magic alive for the rest of your group.

Remember to follow us on Instagram and join our Facebook group Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando

Getting Sick at Walt Disney World Theme Parks. What you can do about it.

Walt disney world first aid stations.

Whether you have a pounding headache, suffer from motion sickness or injure yourself while getting on or off a ride, each of Disney’s four theme parks and two water parks have a first aid center. You’ll find them in the following locations:

  • Magic Kingdom –  Near Crystal Palace and Casey’s Corner.
  • Epcot – Odyssey Center between Test Track and the Mexico Pavilion.
  • Hollywood Studios –  Near the Main Entrance on the left by Guest Services
  • Animal Kingdom – Discovery Island near Creature Comforts
  • Typhoon Lagoon –  Near Leaning Palms
  • Blizzard Beach –  Near Lottawatta Lodge

Cast Members throughout the Parks are forbidden from providing medical attention. You will always be directed to seek help at a First Aid Station. Each location has a team of triage nurses who can help you with basic medical care.

First Air Stations are also able to hold on to your refrigerated medication and needle disposal. Most guests never realize that Disney First Aid offers a full variety of over-the-counter medications for free. First Aid Stations also offer a full range of sewing kits, eyeglass repair, wax for braces, and contact lens solution. While they are only going to provide a single dose, you are able to purchase a full package at most Disney stores or the Baby Care centre.

Feeling Ill While at Your Walt Disney World Resort

With all the excitement of Walt Disney World, when someone in your group starts to feel ill, it is important to step back and figure out what is wrong.

Is someone tired from jet lag, drank the water they shouldn’t have, caught a germ licking the railings (true story), or something more serious. Have an idea of what is wrong, treat what you know and make contingency plans in case it gets worst.

Triage Nurses at the First Aid Stations are allowed to help with minor illnesses and injuries. They will let you know if you require additional services. Should you require additional medical intervention, know that you have options.

Doctors On Call

If you need more involved medical care from a doctor, there are three companies that offer “house” calls to your hotel.

  • DOCS (Doctors on Call Service) — +1-407-399-3627 or  http://www.doctorsoncallservice.com
  • The Medical Concierge — +1-407-648-5252 or  http://www.themedicalconcierge.com
  • Physician Room Service — +1-407-238-2000 or  http://www.physicianroomservice.com

There also is an urgent care facility close to Downtown Disney: Centra Care , +1-407-934-2273 or  http://centracare.org . It offers free transportation to and from Disney hotels and is open Mon-Fri, 8 a.m.-Midnight, and Sat-Sun, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

Prescription Medication While in Orlando

If you need prescription medication while in Orlando, Turner Drugs will deliver to the front desks of Disney World hotels. They also deliver over-the-counter medications, as well as baby formula, diapers, and medical equipment (for rent or purchase).

You can reach Turner Drugs by phone at +1-407-828-8125 or online at  http://turnerdrug.com . If you have a car and are staying at Disney World, you can find a Walgreens drug store and a Winn-Dixie supermarket (with a pharmacy) in Lake Buena Vista, near Downtown Disney. Other drug stores and pharmacies are abundant on US 192 or on and around International Drive.

Tips For Keeping Healthy at Walt Disney World

Don’t be afraid to stay behind if you aren’t feeling well.

Don’t be stubborn. Just because you paid out the nose for this vacation, doesn’t mean you are incapable of becoming sick or injured. Know when to call it quits and ask for help. Missing one day in the Parks to attend to your medical needs will mean the rest of your vacation can go mostly as planned.

Take a Rest Day

If told to rest, we follow the doctor’s orders. Resting today could mean you are back in the Parks tomorrow . Albeit at a slightly slower and modified pace but you aren’t stuck in your room the whole time.

And even if you are, the rest of your family will be having fun, and have peace of mind knowing that you are being taken care of.

This goes the same for preventing sickness or injury. Having a rest day in the middle of your vacation ensures that you are getting plenty of sleep, eating right, and have time for your body to recover. A Disney vacation isn’t the same as a regular holiday and you will be walking more in these few days than you have ever walked before.

Know what your insurance does and doesn’t cover, and be sure to purchase the right package for your family and holiday destination.

Remember Stay Hydrated

What to do and how to deal when you or a loved one gets sick while on vacation at Disney World. Tips on how to manage it and help get better.

The best way to avoid being sick at Disney World is to stay hydrated . Dehydration can manifest itself in a myriad of unknown and mysterious ways. Disney Quick-Service restaurants offer free ice water to anyone that asks, all you have to do is bring your refillable water bottle.

Disney is also adding new water bottle refill stations next to its most popular drinking fountains to help guests help themselves.

Avoid Dehydration and heatstroke on your Disney Holiday

Pack a First Aid Kit in Your Theme Park Bag

While many Disney fans like to travel bag-less, we have 2 energetic children and know this isn’t possible. Since I am forced to bring a Disney Park Bag anyway, it might as well have a few helpful supplies. Carry a few of the most popular items you will need and this will save you from visiting the First Aid Station 3-4 times per day (no joke, they are that clumsy).

Wash Your Hands Often

If Covid-19 has taught us anything, it’s that germs can lay dormant on anything and everything. After each ride, using the restroom, touching merchandise, be sure to wash your hands.

Keep your hands away from your face and wash all clothing before wearing them. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen people wearing clothes around town with the tags still on them, just in case they don’t like it… and we all know the stores don’t wash them before putting it back on the shelf.

Maintain a balanced diet

While Disney is never the place to start a diet, it’s also not the place to break it entirely. Be mindful that you are eating 3 square meals a day, plenty of roughage and keep the salt to a minimum.

Try to avoid too much sugar later in the evening if you plan on getting a good nights sleep, as well as caffeine or anything else that might keep you up at night. Just because your body is exhausted doesn’t mean your brain is ready to shut off.

Rent a Personal Mobility Device

If you have injured yourself to the point where your mobility is limited, know that you can rent scooters and wheelchairs from Walt Disney World. Most ride queues are wide enough to be accessible to mobility devices so you will not need to make extra arrangements when getting in line for a ride.

There are some rides that require guests to transfer from their mobility device to the ride, or be able to walk a short distance in case the ride gets stuck and needs to be evacuated. Check out Disney’s Website for a full list of rides that require a transfer and which can accommodate the mobility device.

Please note that the Disability Pass, DAS, is not eligible for guests with strictly mobility issues since the queue and rides themselves are accessible to such guests.

When it all Goes Wrong

Travel insurance.

Travel insurance is more than just covering the cost of your meals when your flight is delayed. Your insurance can cover the cost of your unused Disney Park tickets, excess medical bills, the early return flight home, and everything in between.

Our Park Experience

During our Christmas vacation, we were at Disney for 2 days when I hurt my ankle. The day was great; I wasn’t running, it wasn’t too hot, we didn’t stand around too much, and I didn’t eat that much sugar.

After Fantasmic, I went back to the room with my daughter to do some laundry while the boys went back to Galaxy’s Edge just before close. I took off my sneakers and replaced them with flip flops, and went about my business. Not 30 minutes later, both ankles were more swollen, red, and tender than they had been during both my pregnancies. I couldn’t manipulate my ankles too much without intense pain. Again, within 30 minutes.

It was a combination of the food, heat, all the walking, and not enough hydration that caused my feet and ankles to swell, but it wouldn’t be as easy, or quick, to get rid of. The pain, swelling, and redness lasted for the remainder of our trip but the next day was the worse. So what was I forced to do… take it easy.

No, I didn’t spend the day in the hotel room. That would be torture for both myself and my husband who would have been forced to take the kids to the Animal Kingdom on his own. I went with them, but walked very slowly, leaning on the stroller, and resting as often as I could. This included missing out on both Jungle Treks and a tour of Rafiki’s Planet Watch.

We considered visiting the First Aid Station if my legs didn’t feel better by the next day but with rest, ice, and a low salt diet, the swelling started to go down. We have International Health Insurance through work so visiting a Doctor at Disney wasn’t a problem, I just didn’t want to.

Picture it, you are having the time of your life at Walt Disney World, and suddenly, out of the blue, your dream vacation begins to fall apart because without warning, you start seriously feeling under the weather. Now what?

Nobody wants to see the magic of their Disney vacation dissolve before their eyes due to unforeseen illness. Take heart, Disney doesn’t leave its visitors high and dry; they are ready and prepared for almost every eventuality, and if they aren’t, they will make sure you get the care you require swiftly and with as little hassle as possible.

Help Yourself, Avoid Getting Sick To Begin With

Don’t get sick; obviously, easier said than done. However, there are things that you can do that will help you enjoy your visit and avoid the traditional pitfalls of those unaccustomed to touring such a large park in a semi-tropical location.

Stay Hydrated – It is essential that you keep drinking water or fluids all, especially during the hottest parts of the day, when you are endangered of becoming dehydrated. You can order a complimentary glass of water at any Disney counter service area.

Wear Sunscreen and Protective Clothing – My mother always told me the sun is stronger in Florida, and just because you don’t feel it doesn’t mean you aren’t crisping up like bacon. Between the sun and hot pavement, heatstroke is a real thing. Generously apply sunscreen often, and be sure to wear a hat as well as clothing to protect you from the full intensity of the sun.

Don’t Over Do It – The parks are enormous, and it always feels like there is not enough time to fit everything in. Pushing yourself beyond your ability is an excellent way to cut your trip short by ending up good and sick. Take frequent breaks from the sun, find places to rest, and recharge your battery. Better to miss a few rides than the whole park.

Where to Receive First Aid at Each Park & Resorts

Walt Disney World 50th, Disney

Each park has a first aid station that can provide assistance for minor illnesses and injuries and dole out non-prescription, over-the-counter medication. Each station is manned by registered nurses. These stations will also store your medication for you and provide a place to dispose of hypodermic needles.

  • Epcot - Located in the Odyssey Center on a stretch of walkway that connects Future World and the World Showcase.
  • Disney's Hollywood Studios - Located at the entrance area of Disney's Hollywood Studios.
  • Disney's Animal Kingdom - Located on Discovery Island just before the bridge leading to Africa.

If you are staying at a Disney Resort, you have access to medical assistance 24 hours/day by reaching out to the front desk. Disney will also provide complimentary transportation to urgent care facilities.

Virtual Medical Assistance from The My Disney Experience App

health at Disney

Recently, Disney has partnered with AdventHealth to provide more extensive health care to guests at Walt Disney World. Rather than hustle off to the urgent care for minor ailments, guests can video conference with doctors to diagnose minor illnesses and be prescribed medication virtually. Prescriptions can even be sent directly to your hotel room. The fee for a virtual appointment is $59 and is covered by most insurance companies. This service can be accessed from your My Disney Experience App.

What Happens if your Illness is Serious?

Goodness knows this is the last thing anyone wants to happen, but what if you or your loved one requires real medical attention? Disney’s partnership with AdventHealth will smooth the way towards getting guests real treatment. 24-hour urgent care is available for all guests, as well as complimentary transportation. In addition to excellent care, guests can rent specialized medical equipment for the duration of their stay, delivered directly to their Disney resort hotel room.

If nothing else, guests at Walt Disney World should feel like they can relax and enjoy their vacation because their health is being looked after and treated with the utmost concern, and that is nothing short of magical.

You’re Sick at Walt Disney World. Now What?

sick after disney world visit

You’ve spent months planning your trip to Disney World, and during your visit, the unexpected happens. Someone gets sick, and you’re left wondering — now what?!

sick after disney world visit

Is your whole trip ruined? What are your options? Are there any options? Don’t worry, because there are!

It really depends on your individual situation, but if you want to be prepared just in case, here’s everything you need to know in case you find yourself sick.

Bring your insurance card.

You might consider this one a no-brainer, but don’t forget your insurance card! Even if everyone is healthy before your trip, you never know what might happen during your visit. In addition to all your other Disney Park bag essentials , make sure you include your insurance card.

sick after disney world visit

No one plans to get sick, but it can happen to anyone, even if you’re on vacation, and at least bringing your insurance card won’t take up any extra room in your bag!

Here’s everything you want to pack in your Disney park bag!

Covid testing centers.

Whether you have COVID symptoms or need a negative test before you can travel home, there are two COVID testing centers available at Orlando International Airport. You can walk into either location or schedule an appointment if that works better for you.

Due to demand, another COVID-19 testing site has opened at our airport. Covid Testing LLC. is available: 🗓️ Daily – 8am-8pm 🧪 RT-PCR and antigen test 📍 Level 3, Terminal A across from the bank 🚶 Walk-ins and appointments accepted: https://t.co/4N5sppHZFN pic.twitter.com/RiCT5oIs3u — Orlando International Airport (@MCO) January 31, 2022

Don’t want to have to go to the airport? There are a number of testing sites in the Central Florida area, close to Disney World. They might not be within walking distance of your hotel, but some of them are close enough that a short drive is all it takes.

sick after disney world visit

These testing sites have different tests available, including rapid antigen and PCR tests, so you might want to double check which tests are available and which tests you need before visiting one of these sites.

When two weeks turned into two years: How Disney World is still dealing with COVID-19.

First aid centers.

First Aid Centers are located in all four Disney Parks in Disney World, and there you can find nurses who can provide you with over-the-counter medications, bandages, and other minor medical assistance needs.

sick after disney world visit

All you have to do is sign in on the First Aid Center log, and a nurse will assist you with getting the proper dosage for whatever over-the-counter medication you’re looking for. You can also purchase bigger quantities of select over-the-counter medications, which we are about to get into!

Read more about Disney World First Aid Centers here!

Over-the-counter medications.

At a Disney World First Aid Center, you can obtain a single dosage of some over-the-counter medications like Tylenol, but you also have the option to purchase some medications too. Typical offerings include allergy and pain medications, eye drops, contact lens solution, sunscreen, lip balm, and more.

sick after disney world visit

These types of first aid meds are also usually available in your hotel and even in some stores around Disney Parks, where you might find them behind the counter. You might not need to go anywhere else to get what you’re looking for!

Prescription Delivery

Did you know that you can get a prescription delivered to your Disney World hotel? Turner Drugs provides delivery for prescriptions (for a fee), whether you forgot your prescription, have one called in from your doctor, or have a new prescription to fill during your visit.

sick after disney world visit

Turner Drugs also delivers to First Aid Centers in Disney Parks, where you can drop off your prescription and pick it up upon delivery. If you’re feeling okay and you’re not contagious, this is a super convenient way to avoid sitting around your hotel room waiting for a delivery!

sick after disney world visit

Keep in mind that Turner Drugs does not take insurance, but they will provide you with an itemized receipt and a universal claim form that you can file with your insurance company at a later time. That likely means you’ll be paying more for your medication, along with a delivery fee.

sick after disney world visit

AdventHealth, which we’ll be talking about next, also provides prescription delivery to either your pharmacy or your Disney World hotel, and you can make arrangements by calling 407-939-7480.

AdventHealth Services

Disney World has partnered with AdventHealth to help take care of mostly non-urgent medical needs, and services include access to healthcare providers through the AdventHealth App. For minor ailments and issues, you can even schedule video visits.

sick after disney world visit

Like Turner Drugs, AdventHealth may not work with your insurance provider, so keep in mind if you decide to use these services you may be paying out of pocket. You can call AdventHealth at 407-939-7480 between 7AM to 11PM daily, or contact AdventHealth online outside of those hours.

Locate Urgent Cares

So what happens if you need to see a doctor? AdventHealth Centra Care Urgent Care is open 24/7, and it’s conveniently located not far from Disney World in Lake Buena Vista. If you don’t have transportation, Disney World hotel guests can receive complimentary transportation to the clinic, which can be arranged through a front desk Cast Member or First Aid, or by calling AdventHealth at 407-939-7480.

sick after disney world visit

But you don’t HAVE to visit the AdventHealth Centra Care Urgent Care. You can also visit any one of the nearby urgent cares or hospitals in the Central Florida area and may even be able to see a doctor via virtual care. Depending on your health insurance, it might be worth exploring which options you have.

If you’re in need of supplies that you can’t find at your Disney World hotel, like Pediasure or other specific needs, you can also use delivery services like Instacart, Shipt, Amazon Prime Now, and more. With delivery, it’s a good idea to double check with your resort on their policies regarding fees for receiving or holding packages.

sick after disney world visit

Similarly, some delivery services require you to be there to receive your items, so you might have to rearrange your schedule a bit to be available for your package. But it can be a convenient option if you don’t have the ability or time to drive to a store!

Here’s how package delivery is changing at some Disney World hotels!

When all else fails, sometimes the best thing to do is, well, rest! Drink lots of water and take some time in your hotel room to give your body a chance to recover. Is it the most fun thing to do on vacation? No, but it can mean getting back into the parks sooner!

One Reply to “You’re Sick at Walt Disney World. Now What?”

I read this post in March and I didn’t think I would need it. I ended up getting food poisoning when we went in April (my first hint I was getting sick was when I got nauseous on Space Mountain, I never get nauseous on Space Mountain) and it wasn’t pretty. Luckily I was back in my hotel room when the worst of it hit. I ended up using Amazon grocery delivery to get the necessities (all I could eat after things settled down were Teddy Graham’s and flattened ginger ale) and otc meds for vomiting and diarrhea. I looked up my resorts delivery policies, called them up, and they delivered it to my door. I ended up missing the last two days at the park with my family and just stayed in bed as I was so exhausted and dehydrated. Thank you for this article and helping me get through it. I am so very thankful that I read this before my trip.

Well Hello Magic

What to do if you get sick at Walt Disney World!

It feels like getting sick at Walt Disney World would be the worst thing in the world. You plan and save for this trip for so long, and you want it to be perfect. While it's not ideal, there are ways to alleviate some of the pain of being sick. We have experienced injuries and illnesses during our Disney trips and have been able to manage both with the amazing services and facilities at Walt Disney World Resort.

AdventHealth is the official healthcare provider at Walt Disney World Resort. They offer a range of services for guests, including urgent care, doctor visits, prescription, and equipment delivery.

Walt Disney World Theme Parks and First Aid

Where Do I Find First Aid?

If you are visiting any of the Disney parks, you can find a first aid center in every park. To locate the first aid center, open your My Disney Experience app and search "First Aid" on the map. The app will show you the exact locations. If you need further assistance, any Cast Member can direct you.

Magic Kingdom:  between Casey's Corner and the Crystal Palace, just at the corner of the hub on Main Street.

Epcot:  The Odyssey Building, between Test Track and the Mexico pavilion

Hollywood Studios:  To the left of the entrance as you enter the park, next to Guest Services.

Animal Kingdom:  On Discovery Island near Creature Comforts

Typhoon Lagoon:  Near Leaning Palms

Blizzard Beach:  By Lottawatta Lodge

What do I do when I get there?

When you arrive at the first aid center, a nurse from AdventHealth will greet you and ask you to sign in. After that, they will take you to one of the evaluation rooms. Most of the cases we have had are minor injuries such as scrapes and bumps, for which the nurse has been able to provide band-aids, ice packs, or a place to rest for a while. They can also assist you if you have a headache or allergy issues. Once your needs are assessed, you will be sent on your way.

What Can First Aid do for you?

Over-the-counter remedies are available in single doses free of charge, but larger sizes can also be purchased. If they feel that the care you need is beyond what they can provide, they will help you determine the next steps and even assist you in getting transportation to another facility. If you are injured in the park and cannot reach the first aid center, ask a cast member for help. They will make sure that you receive the assistance you need.

VIRTUAL VISIT

When our youngest child was an infant, we noticed the symptoms of an ear infection. Due to the ongoing Covid pandemic, we didn't want to risk going to the clinic. Instead, we opted for a video visit with the doctor. The doctor was able to diagnose the infection and prescribed antibiotics for our baby, which were delivered to our doorstep. This saved us from the potential stress of having a sick baby. Within two days, our baby was back to being healthy and happy. We are grateful for the ease and convenience of the service for our family.

At Walt Disney World Resort, you can now request expert healthcare via video call through the AdventHealth app for a small fee.

Access adult and pediatric services, diagnosis and treatment for minor and urgent-care ailments, prescriptions sent to your preferred pharmacy, and live, secure video chat with an AdventHealth provider 24/7.

Download the AdventHealth app from your app store today or learn more at  AdventHealth.com/video-visits .

Technical support is available at  (855) 238-8791 .  Learn more about virtual care, including cost.

How do I get my prescriptions?

Prescriptions can be sent to the nearest pharmacy of your choice. AdventHealth also offers prescription delivery services to Disney Resorts for your convenience. For more information, don't hesitate to contact the AdventHealth Experience Center at (407) 939-7480.

What Happens if I cannot go to the park?

Disney does not provide refunds for tickets, but they offer assistance in rescheduling the dates of the tickets if you need to adjust your entire trip. Simply speak to someone at Guest Relations or the front desk of the resort, and they will guide you in the right direction for your theme park tickets.

Rebooking flights and hotels can be a challenging task, especially if you don't have travel insurance. In case you have travel insurance, it is recommended to contact them immediately to discuss the options of getting a refund for your flights or cover the change fees on any plane tickets.

Magic at the Resort

While waiting for your sickness to pass, take a break and indulge in some fun activities. You can watch a Disney cartoon, order food to the room and if you are at the Grand Floridan get some room service, play cards, or simply sit on your balcony and enjoy the fresh Florida air. If you prefer to spend some quality time indoors, you can pick up a board game or deck of cards from the resort gift shop.

Most resorts offer views of fireworks, so you can find a spot outdoors and enjoy the stunning colors lighting up the sky.

If you're staying at a Magic Kingdom Resort on the Seven Seas Lagoon, don't forget to ask the front desk about the timing of the Electrical Water Pageant. You can also check the My Disney Experience app for the timings, but it's always a good idea to double-check.

Lastly, don't forget to enjoy Mickey cartoons on your TV throughout the day!

How to stay healthy at Walt Disney World

Remember to stay hydrated, wash your hands regularly, eat fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins, and get enough sleep. When you are tired, your body becomes more susceptible to germs and illnesses. That's why I always advise you not to go to the parks every day. Our family can only handle two rope drop days before we need a full day of rest.

What To Do If You Get Sick While At Walt Disney World

Luckily, there are many ways to help you get back on the way to wellness while in Orlando. Here are a few tips to help:

Call Your Local Healthcare Provider

If you have a primary healthcare provider, you can call them and explain your situation. For a simple problem like pink eye, ear infection, or a simple chest cold, they may be sympathetic to your situation and willing to send a prescription to a pharmacy in the area. If you use a nationwide chain like Walgreens, CVS, or Walmart, they will already have your information on file, and you can go there to pick up your order, just like at home.

Check out Telemedicine

What-is-Telemedicine

Many insurance plans include access to a Tele-Doc, Doctor on Demand, or a similar service. This is a program that lets you talk to a medical professional over the phone (or by FaceTime chat) and get a recommendation. These providers can send prescriptions to a pharmacy in the area for you. The consultation fee may be free as part of your coverage or might be a relatively small fee (compared to an urgent care copay). If you have your insurance card with you, call the customer service number on the card to see if this is an option that is available to you. Some of the most popular services are Teladoc , HealthTap , and Amwell .

Local Walk-In Clinics

There are also several walk-in clinics around the WDW area. Since these locations treat guests from all over the world, it’s best to check to see if they take your medical insurance and what fees they charge upfront. You don’t want a $300 doctor bill for a sore throat to ruin your vacation.

In-Room Medical Care

An additional option available to guests visiting Orlando is The Medical Concierge . This service by the EastCoast Medical Network runs a Walk-in Clinic open on Monday to Saturday from 8 AM to 5 PM, provides In-Room Urgent Care (Doctor House Calls) 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a week and also can provide services for or provide references to one of their network clinics for the following specialties:

  • Pediatricians
  • Chiropractor*
  • Dermatology*
  • Ophthalmology*
  • Orthopedic*
  • Psychiatry*

They can be contacted 24 hours a day at 407-648-5252 and their main clinic is located at:

6000 TURKEY LAKE ROAD SUITE 208 ORLANDO, FL 32819

A friend of ours from the United Kingdom used this service when he needed emergency dental work. He was referred to a local dentist who saw him the next morning and provided medications that helped his problem until it could be addressed when he returned home.

Stand-Alone ER

There are several stand-alone ER locations located near Walt Disney World. These locations provide all the services of a hospital emergency room but are not attached to a hospital. Be aware that receiving treatment from one of these locations may be treated the same as a hospital visit by your insurance, resulting in higher co-payments.

The closest ones to Disney are:

AdventHealth ER at FLAMINGO CROSSINGS Town Center 13323 Hartzog Rd. Winter Garden, FL 34787

AdventHealth Palm Parkway ER 7823 Palm Parkway Orlando, FL 32836

Hospital Emergency Room

Sometimes medical emergencies don’t stick to a timetable. If you need emergency care at any time of the day, the Emergency Room is your final option. There are two hospital locations close to Walt Disney World.

From most of Disney World, the closest hospital is:

ADVENTHEALTH CELEBRATION EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT 400 CELEBRATION PLACE CELEBRATION, Florida 34747

If you happen to be on the Eastern side of Disney World near Disney Springs, there is another option available.

I injured myself pretty badly at Epcot last year — bleeding profusely — and the First Aid staff was wonderful. They treated my wound and wrapped it up securely, giving me supplies and over-the-counter medications to take with me. Each morning for the rest of the trip I’d stop into First Aid, and they would clean and rebandage my wound. Fantastic level of care!

' src=

Universal first aid looked after me after a knee swelling a couple of weeks after surgery. Great to know they are there

' src=

Why would you go there a couple of weeks after knee surgery?

' src=

Recovery time after knee surgery is much shorter than it used to be. The strain of getting around a theme park just might have been too much strain to put on it so soon.

' src=

Disney First-Aid stations will hand out bandaids if needed. All you have to do is ask.

' src=

2 incidents: my mom fell pretty badly in front of Pirates actually at Disneyland. The first aid cleaned her up and recommended she get a few stitches. They actually said it was quicker and easier to just get a cab to the ER than to go get the car, FIND the hospital etc. It was no emergency but still …. So we did just that. She and my dad went in a cab and my husband and I got the car and drove over later to pick her up….the way to go.

Second incident. My husband had been working a bunch of hours then we had a week Disneyworld trip planned. Well he was having tooth problems back at home but no time for dentist. So he was really in discomfort on the plane. So my nephew and I talked him into finding a dentist after landing. I’m not kidding he just google mapped a dentist that was along the way to our hotel. I think he may have also verified they took our insurance. So we stopped. They took him as a walk in and pulled his tooth! No delay really. We filled his antibiotic rx and just went on to the parks as planned. It all worked out fine. I think the health practitioners in the area have probably seen it all and are accustomed to dealing with walkins. It’s great 👍🏻

' src=

My Daughter almost passed out because of the heat at Disney World. The First Aid at Epcot did an excellent job. But good info on the nearby places just in case. Especially that we are going in a couple months.

' src=

AND if you are ill with a contagious kind of sickness (covid, flu, fever, etc.) please don’t go to the park to spread it to others. People pay thousands of dollars to go to Disney so don’t ruin it for others. Travel insurance might help on this issue so if you do seek medical assistance keep a copy of the documentation for claims purposes.

What To Do If You Get Sick During Your Disney World Visit

by Melissa Roden · November 30, 2019

Mickey Mouse

With the Holiday Season officially upon us, that also means the start of flu and cold season! Though no one likes to think about the possibility of getting ill at Walt Disney World, it is always an unfortunate possibility.

That’s why it pays to do a little bit of research on what to do if you get a bad case of the sniffles, a nasty tummy bug or are in need of emergency medical attention.

With that in mind, we’ve compiled a helpful guide on what to do should you get sick at Walt Disney World Resort.

Disney World First Aid

Walt Disney World First Aid Stations

Whether you have a pounding headache, suffer from motion sickness or inure yourself while getting on or off a ride, each of Disney’s four theme parks and two water parks have a first aid center. You’ll find them in the following locations:

  • Magic Kingdom –  Near Crystal Palace and Casey’s Corner.
  • Epcot – Odyssey Center between Test Track and the Mexico Pavilion.
  • Hollywood Studios –  Near the Main Entrance on the left by Guest Services
  • Animal Kingdom – Discovery Island near Creature Comforts
  • Typhoon Lagoon – Near Leaning Palms
  • Blizzard Beach – Near Lottawatta Lodge

Getting sick at Disney

At each of the first aid centers on the property, you’ll find an on-duty nurse.  They will be able to dispense single doses of basic over the counter medication and also provide support for a variety of minor issues including bumps and scrapes.

For larger doses of over the counter drugs like Ibuprofen, Asprin etc, you can head to the gift shops. They typically carry enough of these items to get you through your day at the parks.

My Disney Experience

Feeling Ill While at Your Walt Disney World Resort

If you happen to feel unwell while staying on property at Walt Disney World there are services available.  Simply ring the front desk for assistance any time of day.  This should be your first course of action as the Cast Members are well versed in medical options available to guests and can direct accordingly.

This could be anything from finding your closest urgent care center to providing you with directions to the nearest pharmacy.  I’ve also heard of the Front desk organizing everything from clean linens for ailing patients to whipping up some chicken noodle soup when you have a sick tummy!

Doctors

Doctors On Call

If you find you have an illness during your stay you may want to consider using the in-room service called Doctors on Call. That number is 407-399-DOCS.

A licensed physician will come to your resort room and will call in any prescriptions if necessary and they will be delivered to the resort from the pharmacy. This means that minor illnesses or ailments can be treated from the comfort of your own resort room.

Urgent Care Centers

Disney recommends AdventHealth Walk-In Urgent Care Centers which are located in close proximity to the resort.   The clinics are open from 8 am-midnight.

Complimentary transportation is available from your Walt Disney World Resort. You can find out more information at First Aid, by calling the Front Desk of your resort or 407.934.2273.

Sick

Turner Drugs Tourist Prescription Service

For guests that need medication in a hurray Turner Drugs Tourist Prescription Services works closely with Walt Disney World. They are a full pharmacy and retail store and offer same-day delivery of your medications directly to your resort for you.  T

he service only takes credit cards or cash. However, if medications are covered by your insurance companies Turner will provide you with the proper paperwork to be reimbursed.  You can reach them directly at 407.828.8125.

Tips For Keeping Healthy at Walt Disney World

Though nobody plans on getting ill during a Walt Disney World vacation, injuries, health emergencies or tummy bugs are sometimes inevitable. However, there are some things you can do to keep protect your family:

Consider Travel Insurance –   Disney offers a travel insurance policy that provides coverage should something go wrong in the lead-in or while you are on holiday.  It is $82.50 per adult ($6 per child) and is a good idea for clients with pre-existing conditions or ailments that may require medical attention while you are at the Walt Disney World.

You can add Travel Insurance to your Walt Disney World vacation package anytime up until the 30-day mark. Simply reach out to Disney or your Travel Agent to find out more!

Remember to Stay Hydrated –  Whether you’re visiting in January or in July, heat can always be an issue when travelling to Orlando.  Add to that miles upon miles of walking and its not uncommon for people to suffer the effects of dehydration.

That’s why it’s important for you and your family to drink lots of water throughout your Disney visit.  All of Disney’s restaurants are required to have water stations available in case you failed to stock up on bottled water but need to refuel quickly.

Pack a First Aid Kid in Your Theme Park Bag – Here at MickeyBlog we regularly write pieces on items that you’ll want to be sure to bring with you into the theme parks and First Aid Kits regularly top our list. I don’t head to the parks without Tylenol, band-aid, tums, pills for motion sickness, cooling towels and other various first aid times.

That means you can quickly remedy little things that may make your family uncomfortable without having to fork out tons of money for over the counter items at theme park gift shops.

band aid

Be Sure to Take Breaks – Last time I was at Walt Disney World, I walked 35 miles in 6 days! It’s pretty easy to over-exert yourself while at the same time underestimating the massive workout that a Disney visit can be!  Even if you don’t have a pre-existing condition, be sure to take regularly scheduled time outs for everyone to relax. Your body will thank you for it!

The services and advice outlined above are designed to help you with minor illnesses and ailments. If you are having a medical emergency always remember to make calling 911 you first objective!

Tips to Avoid Getting Sick at Disney World

sick after disney world visit

The stockings are hung by the chimney with care…and cold, flu, and COVID season are here . It’s a few days before Christmas, Walt Disney World is packed with people, and a lot of them are sick. This post offers my favorite tips to avoid joining them, with ways to keep your immune system strong and minimize– but not eliminate –your risk of illness at Walt Disney World.

I’ve been planning on writing this post for a while, but have avoided doing so due to…let’s call it “silly superstition.” Earlier this summer, I read this article in the Washington Post that stuck with me. Not for the substance of the human interest piece about “novids” but because almost everyone interviewed had jinxed themselves. Now, I’m not actually superstitious in my day-to-day life, but …I also don’t want to end my own dumb luck.

To the best of my knowledge, I have never had COVID. This is despite very few modifications to my ‘normal’ life since last March, pretty much all of my family and friends coming down with it (some multiple times), having attended events that were subsequently found to be superspreaders, and testing whenever I’ve learned of a close contact who was infected. In fairness, I am young(ish) and relatively healthy, so it’s always possible that I’ve had an asymptomatic infection at a time I didn’t test–hence the “to the best of my knowledge” caveat. In any case, I thought I’d share what I do to avoid getting sick at Walt Disney World.

sick after disney world visit

I’ll preface all of this by stating the obvious: I’m not a scientist, epidemiologist, infectious disease specialist, or public health expert. I hate going to the doctor, and am irrationally scared of needles. ( Like a brave trooper, I get the annual flu shot anyway! ) Moreover, I’m a staunch advocate of specialized expertise over internet fear-mongering and sensationalism.

What I’m presenting here is based upon what I’ve read in various journals and respected publications– not random rants from my uncle Cletus on social media. However, that doesn’t mean that my lay interpretation of the information is accurate–I have blind spots, biases, and a lack of domain knowledge that might result in not fully grasping what I’m reading. Accordingly, this post should not be viewed as a credible or comprehensive source of information regarding staying safe and healthy.

sick after disney world visit

I’m also not going to restate the obvious. We all lived through the last 3 years; no sense in belaboring what you already have been told thousands of times. Same goes for the controversial. Way too much time online is spent condescendingly shouting down “opponents” for the sake of being right and winning some perceived victory. I would prefer to persuade. Whatever strongly-held beliefs you’ve formed in the last few years are not going to be changed by reading some random dude’s blog about Disney.

Rather than engaging in such folly, I’ll focus on illuminating information and practical tips that people might actually put to use. With that in mind, here are my recommendations…

sick after disney world visit

Mitigate Risk – I would like to think of myself as a pragmatist, eschewing the perfect but unrealistic for the achievable but unideal . To that end, I’ve long been a believer in harm reduction models and risk mitigation. This is as opposed to zero-tolerance or abstinence, which history has demonstrated time and time again are destined to fail.

Much of that pertains to public policy, but it’s also applicable on an individual level. It can mean recognizing that tradeoffs exist virtually everywhere, and making them when it’s advantageous. If the upside is greater than the downside, or the inconvenience is minimal, consider reducing your risks. Many of the specific recommendations here flow from this perspective, but it’s worth underscoring up top that nothing on this list is absolute.

sick after disney world visit

Time Your Trip – If it’s not already obvious, there are patterns to when seasonal illnesses peak and plateau. It’s not the same everywhere, but it is premised on some of the same general principles. Conditions that drive people indoors and towards social gatherings give rise to spikes in sickness.

In Florida, this has meant more cases in the late summer months–when many locals are inside due to hot and humid weather. Pretty much everywhere, it also means another spike between around Thanksgiving and New Year’s due to holiday events. This is not to say you cannot get sick in mid-March or early October–you absolutely can. Just that it’s statistically more likely in late December or July.

sick after disney world visit

Avoid Crowds – We all have heard  way too much  about physical distancing in the last few years. This is not about that. I have zero hesitations about being packed into a crowd to watch Enchantment or Harmonious. Actually scratch that–but my hesitations pertain to the “watch Enchantment or Harmonious” portion of that, not the crowds. Same goes for “filling in all available space.” That one also annoys me, but I’m not particularly concerned with outdoor crowds or fleeting congestion.

Rather, we attempt to avoid prolonged, indoor crowds. At home, we go to the theater at 9 am rather than 9 pm (which really has more to do with matinee prices and fewer rowdy teens…but let’s pretend it’s safety!). While traveling, we wait at empty airport gates rather than where our flight is scheduled.

When staying at an on-site resort, we get out the door super early (beating the crowds to the bus stop) and stay until the bitter end (avoiding the evening exodus). If you’re not an early riser or night owl, you can still travel at off-hours to reduce crowd exposure. This idea can be extended to bars, food courts, and countless other locations in the parks and resorts at Walt Disney World.

sick after disney world visit

Dine Outdoors – One of my biggest disappointments of the last ~3 years is that greater emphasis was not placed on ventilation, and instead so much focus was placed on highly-visible but ultimately meaningless health theater measures. And this isn’t Monday morning quarterbacking with the benefit of hindsight–we knew  ventilation mattered back in 2020 (see “ We Need To Talk About Ventilation ”).

I still hold out hope that the Healthy Buildings movement gains more momentum in corporate America, as it has public health  and  economic benefits. In the meantime, I have become increasingly cognizant of ventilation, human density, and air filtration (or presumed lack thereof). More than anywhere else, this is especially the case at restaurants.

One option to mitigate risk is by avoiding crowded indoor bars & lounges around the parks and resorts, and choosing restaurants with open air seating. This is arguably the biggest and best thing you can do, but Walt Disney World doesn’t make it easy–most table service restaurants only offer indoor seating. See our Best Outdoor Dining Options at Walt Disney World for recommendations on that front.

With that said, we do dine inside quite often. Again, this is not an all-or-nothing approach. When it’s not inconvenient, we eat outside. We also often dine at off-hours (early or late seatings) when restaurants tend to be less crowded. In some cases, we’ve also done more outdoor dining early in trips and higher-risk (comparatively) indoor dining towards the end. We do not upend our lives or vacations to incrementally reduce risk–we just go for the low-hanging fruit.

sick after disney world visit

Eat This, Not That  – Come to find out, Adventureland pizza rolls paired with Dole Whips are not the definition of a “balanced” diet despite one being hot and the other being cold. Cupcakes and cocktails that are an amalgamation of artificial colors and flavors aren’t the epitome of healthy eating. Who could’ve known?!

The straightforward advice here is to eat a balanced diet even while traveling, as proper nutrition is one key to not getting sick. You know the basics there, so I’m going to take that a step further since we’re frequently asked how we stay healthy despite eating so much theme park food. The simple answer is that you only see ~5% of all meals we eat, which are admittedly unhealthy. However, 95% of our meals are not in theme parks, and our regular diets do not even remotely resemble what we consume in the parks.

At home, we consume a lot of vegetables, beans, nuts, fruits, tea, poultry, and fish; we only eat red meat about once per week, and seldom consume added sugars or alcohol. We more or less unintentionally follow a mixture of Japanese and Mediterranean diets , with our own quirks.

sick after disney world visit

In particular, I consume a lot of kimchi, kombucha, miso, cottage cheese, and greek yogurt. Beyond the general health benefits, fermented foods have been associated with mitigating illness severity . I also eat a lot of cold-water (read: fatty) fish, which are high in polyunsaturated fatty acids– similar story there . These are just two of many other studies that link the gut microbiome to immune response, but not all have a high degree of confidence in the conclusions about COVID, specifically.

Nevertheless, the holistic health and wellness benefits are well-established. This has been our diet for years due to the general/overall benefits, and it has improved several aspects of our lives. (One of my other biggest disappointments of the last ~3 years is that greater emphasis was not placed on healthy living given the most common COVID comorbidities.)

sick after disney world visit

When we recently traveled to Japan, it was super simple to maintain this diet. Green tea and rice are ubiquitous, same for salmon and kimchi. There’s a 7-11 or Lawson convenience store on virtually every corner, and our breakfast would contain almost all of these items. (Fruits and vegetables can be more expensive or harder to find–I ate a lot of bananas and jumbo carrots, which are easy to find and cheap.)

At Walt Disney World, we recommend grocery delivery to resorts . We’ve done this many times, as it’s a great way to eat a healthy breakfast (the least “exciting” meal in the parks, anyway) while still enjoying indulgent lunches and dinners. There are a number of different grocery delivery services, but Walmart+ has become our go-to recently. It’s the cheapest, easiest, and most efficient.

Nevertheless, I want to stress that I’m not overzealous about any of this. We don’t track what we consume or ‘do’ dieting–this is our diet, but it’s loosely-followed and has almost become second nature or routine. ‘Everything in Moderation’ is a good mantra, and if you eat well most of the time, you can go nuts some of the time. I most definitely do that, as anyone who has read some of our food reviews can attest.

sick after disney world visit

Stay Hydrated  – This is a more obvious one but I’m going to include it anyway because it cannot be overstated. Not soda or alcohol, but  water.  However much you drink at home, at least double it at Walt Disney World. Many people say that you aren’t getting the full experience if you don’t do the grand circle tour of the Top 10 Toilets at Walt Disney World , anyway.

While buying bottled water is one option, that’ll get expensive fast given how much you need to drink to stay hydrated. Instead, we recommend going into counter service restaurants or other walk-up windows and asking for free cups of water. They’re small, so you might want to request as many as you can carry. Another obvious option is drinking fountains, but we’ve gotta warn you: tap water at Walt Disney World is sourced directly from the swamp, and is actually 3% alligator urine. ( Not really, but it sure tastes like it!)

Because of that, we highly recommend the Life Straw Go Filter Water Bottle . Our jokes aside, Florida water can taste funky straight from the tap (it’s an acquired taste), so it’s key to get a bottle with a filter. This bottle is the best option, hands down. It’s durable, BPA-free, dishwasher safe, and uses a 2-stage activated carbon filter reduces odor, chlorine and leaves zero aftertaste! (If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, Brita Filter Water Bottles  are great, too.)

There are a few dedicated bottle filling stations popping up around the parks, but not nearly enough. Our go-to location is inside Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe at Magic Kingdom (they’ll give you cups of ice if you want cold  water), and there are other spots at the entrance to World Showcase in EPCOT and scattered around the parks. Still not nearly as many as a theme park in Florida should have, but it’s a start.

sick after disney world visit

Stop Touching Stuff – I can already anticipate the angry responses to this one: “YOU CAN’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO. I’m not going to bubble myself in my basement to stay safe, I’m going to live my life… by touching stuff that thousands of children have licked (or worse).”

Joking aside, this is probably the one that’s the easiest ‘sacrifice’ to make in theory, but the single most difficult in practice. I will admit that I’m a tactile person. I touch stuff. I love the texture of the wooden handrails in the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad queue, I cannot resist playing the mostly-broken interactive queue games in the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. I will cut this list of examples short because it’s already embarrassing–I sound like a small child.

Nevertheless, I’ve made a concerted effort to not touch as much at Walt Disney World. It has been surprisingly challenging, but I’ve gotten much better about it. And while I’m still a sucker for a good buffet ( everything in moderation! ), I make a point of washing my hands between trips (among other things).

Do “Down” Days – If this list were someone else’s, it would include “get plenty of sleep.” I cannot include that because I burn the candle at both ends, and am usually in the parks from opening until closing on a  go-mode  day. I know that’s unhealthy, but can’t stop, won’t stop.

To compensate for that, we often do “down” days outside the parks that (sometimes, hopefully) involve sleeping in. On days when I’m testing Disney’s Hollywood Studios strategy and staying at Crescent Lake, I often manage to sneak in a midday nap break rather than watching those stage shows for the thousandth times. You also should sleep in or get to bed early some nights, but that definitely falls into  do as I say, not as I do  territory.

sick after disney world visit

For the final time, none of this advice is absolute. It should go without saying, but a vacation should not revolve around reducing risk of illness. Have fun first, pick and choose ways to be healthy second (or third/fourth/etc). You could do everything “perfectly” and still end up sick during or after your trip. The fact is that there’s no such thing as eliminating risk, only reducing it.

When it comes down to it, anyone visiting Walt Disney World must have some degree of risk tolerance, as it’s inherent in the destination. If you were truly preoccupied with safety from sickness, there are superior options, such as U.S. National Parks, state parks, or the beach. Now if you’ll excuse me, as I have to go rest up. I can only assume writing this article has jinxed me, and I’ll need to spend the next few days recovering from being sick. 😉

The first week of December my husband and I visited WDW. We were invited to stay as guests of owners at Old Key West Resort. We followed all sensible health protocols: hand washing, hand sanitizer, hydration, staying away from indoor shows/crowds. We enjoyed the holiday decorations and being outdoors as much as possible. We waited until evenings for shorter lines and rode a total of three attraction rides. The worst thing I think we did was ride crowded Disney transportation (monorail & buses.)

A few days after we returned home to South FL, I contacted Influenza A and my husband tested positive for covid. I wish we had been among the few we saw in the parks wearing masks. It would have been worth the inconvenience.

' src=

Think about the people density on Disney’s buses. When you couple the high density with the fact that their buses don’t bring in any outdoor air and the filter is likely only MERV-4, it’s hard to argue that there’s a worse place to be from a health standpoint in Disney World. Covid, the flu and other respiratory diseases are spread almost entirely indoors and through the air. That’s why public buildings require a certain amount of outdoor airflow per person and MERV-13 is quickly becoming the absolute minimum.

' src=

I think a lot of people underestimate the hydration aspect. I am a soda fiend but it is not the same, folks! You gotta drink that water. And like Tom says, bringing a reusable filtered water bottle is a game changer! Free water, no weird Florida fluoride taste, and less plastic waste vs. bottled water; triple win!

Also, I know we are focusing on things that haven’t been said ad naseum the past 3 years, but wash your hands. If you change literally none of your other behaviors except washing your hands more often/thoroughly it still makes a huge difference.

Helpful Tips If You Get Sick At Disney

Reasons You May Get Sick At Disney

  • Weather change
  • Overexertion
  • Sleeping habits change
  • Food/eating habits change
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Not practicing good hygiene
  • Forgetting vitamins/supplements
  • Being exposed to new things (water fountains, hand rails, etc.)

That being said, it is a good idea to enjoy vacation by spending some time relaxing and taking care of yourself as opposed to completely disregarding the same practices you would when you’re at home. Drink plenty of water, especially if you’re not accustomed to the Florida heat, wash your hands often, and most importantly, take a break every once in a while!

First Aid Stations At Disney

If you face a minor ailment or sickness that can be fixed easily in the middle of your day at the Disney Parks, you can feel free to stop at one of the first aid stations located at each of the Disney Parks and water parks below. Things such as bandaids for a cut, cream for a bee sting, or even ice for a swollen ankle can be found here, along with other minor issues you may consider as getting sick at Disney.

  • Epcot – Odyssey Center between Test Track and the Mexico Pavilion.
  • Typhoon Lagoon – Near Leaning Palms
  • Blizzard Beach – Near Lottawatta Lodge
  • Hollywood Studios –  Near the Main Entrance on the left by Guest Services
  • Magic Kingdom –  Near Crystal Palace and Casey’s Corner.
  • Animal Kingdom – Discovery Island near Creature Comforts

Use Local A Pharmacy If Necessary

If what you are looking for isn’t available at one of the first aid stations in Disney World, try a local pharmacy! For example, Turner Drugs is a tourist prescription service that will deliver anywhere on property! They have been commended for their speedy delivery times, as well!

As a drug store, they also have any other items you may need on their website (snacks, baby formula, etc.), which can be delivered with your over the counter medication. You can choose to have these items left at the front desk of your resort or hotel, conveniently ready to pick up on your way back from the Disney parks!

Additionally, there are many other options in terms of over-the-counter medicines near Disney World such as Amazon and Walmart! For our full list of stores that may have what you need if you are sick in Disney World, click here!

Urgent Cares near Disney

In case of a more serious illness, it is good to know there are also Urgent Cares near Disney World, should you need one. AdventHealth Walk-In Urgent Care is within close proximity to Disney and is recommended to guests! These AdventHealth clinics are also flexible in hours, open from 8am-midnight every day!

Transportation here is also complimentary from your Walt Disney World Resort. All you have to do to utilize this option is call your front desk or stop by first aid for more information!

A lot of guests from Disney fly into the Orlando Airport and use one of the convenient paid shuttle bus services to get to their Disney World Resort, making traveling off property a second thought, as mostly everything you need in Disney World is conveniently located and there is transportation to. Luckily, urgent care is included in this!

Guest-Service Help When You Are Sick At Disney

The biggest struggle for me when I’m sick is getting out of bed and going somewhere, and I’m sure many others can relate. If you are seeking something from the gift shop, such as Neosporin, bandaids, ibuprofen, etc., don’t hesitate to call the concierge!

By doing so, you can have any essential item found in the shop downstairs left right at your doorstep! Not only are you saving yourself the trip, you are being proactive and keeping others safe!

Tips For When You Get Sick At Disney

As it goes when you’re sick at home, the number one thing to do when you’re sick is to listen to your body! If you’re feeling under the weather and still try to make your FastPass for Expedition Everest early in the morning, you aren’t going to feel better anytime soon.

The best advice we have is to send others in your party on rides if you’re feeling sick, or simply sit out of plans for a day and get some much needed rest and relaxation.

With the creation of Disney+, you can still have a magical time catching up with your favorite characters by streaming movies right from your Disney resort. Stay hydrated, drink hot tea with honey, and soak up some of the Florida sun while you stay behind for a day.

If your sickness isn’t all that bad, try to take the morning off and meet back up with your party for dinner plans and maybe a show afterwards. The sooner you get help, the sooner you will feel better!

The biggest issue about getting sick in Disney is by ignoring it, you’re also putting others at risk to get your sickness. It’s bad enough if you alone are sick, but if your entire party gets sick along with your neighbors in the resort or the people waiting in line for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad next to you do, too, then everyone is suffering.

Take care of yourself, and know the castle will be waiting for you tomorrow!

29 Useful Tips to Survive getting sick at Disney World

This is it–  the big trip to Walt Disney World. You have planned for months, secured your park reservations, and made the dining reservations. The morning of the trip you pull off an epic surprise for the trip of a lifetime to the most magical place on earth… and two days after you arrive someone gets sick at Disney.

Stay calm, this is not the end of your vacation to the Disney World theme parks, just a little bump in the road.

Sick kids at Disney World

Getting sick on your Walt Disney World vacation

Our first trip to Walt Disney World with kids, my youngest got the flu. He had a 104 fever and we had no idea until the end of the day (Bad mama! Bad!). We thought we had to do it all, and we pushed him way too much.

My sick kid was miserable for our entire five-day trip to Disney World. Only when I gave him strawberry popsicles at the parks was he happy.

Mornings were fine, but our evening adventures to see fireworks and light shows in the parks were a lost cause. Either he fell asleep or lost it when the loud fireworks started to pop.

If we had just taken a break from our Disney vacation and given him some downtime, which I did on our second trip when he got the flu… again, we would have been much better off.

Yes, you will show up at Disney World with kids and they may get sick. It’s OK. Your kids may also be sick when you have to leave. That’s OK too. If you have travel insurance, see if you are covered and can reschedule your trip if your vacation time permits. It might not.

Don’t stress. Kids bounce back fast. Slow down your schedule in the parks, get the medical attention required, and enjoy each Disney park at a leisurely pace. Whether you have kids or not you should do this.

After all, if you are more stressed and tired after your vacation, it’s really not a vacation, is it?

What To Do If You Get Sick at a Disney Park

While you might think the best thing to do is to push through not feeling so great, it’s often best to get a professional opinion and medical services. Thankfully, each park has its own First Aid Station with an on-duty nurse.

Many times I have visited the park’s First Aid Stations. They can give single doses of many medications in most cases, like Tylenol or Pepto at a first aid location, but they can not give you prescription medication.

Nurses are available during normal park hours to help with whatever you may need, especially minor ailments. Child suffers from nose bleeds? No problem, they will pack the nose and help you get on your way.

It’s really a well-run place. You will be out the door in no time and not miss a single step.

First Aid Locations

  • Magic Kingdom– Located near Crystal Palace and Casey’s Corner
  • EPCOT – Located between Test Track and the Mexico Pavilion
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios – Located by the Main Entrance by Guest Services
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park – Located in Discovery Island by Creature Comforts
  • Typhoon Lagoon – Located by Leaning Palms
  • Blizzard Beach – Located by Lottawatta Lodge

Should you require an additional dose or two of medication, you can find travel-size over-the-counter items in the gift shops. They carry everything from pain relievers, cold medicine, allergy relief, motion sickness and stomach relief.

Medical emergency on your family vacation.

It’s important to not that if you have a true medical emergency, you should call 911 or go to the emergency room right away. U.S.A. health insurance plans should be accepted at most area hospitals near the Walt Disney World Parks. Check the various travel insurance companies to see what they will cover as well, including hospital stays, medical equipment and any other major health expenses. Keep all of your itemized receipts to claim after your trip and to submit to your insurance provider and HSA spending account (if you have one).

Best option for minor illnesses

Have no fear, Disney World is prepared for you! Each Disney resort offers many over-the-counter medicines that you may need. If someone has a stomach bug, they will send fresh sheets and towels, and give you trash bags for the not-so-clean linens.

Oftentimes once you call housekeeping for help with that, someone will also show up with saltines and ginger ale (just a little Disney magic). I also know from first-hand experience with my daughter that this magic does exist!

On-Call Doctors at Disney World

You also have access to an on-call doctor when you stay at a Disney Resort. Call a front desk cast member to help you get in touch with a licensed physician who will come directly to your Walt Disney World resort room and help to diagnose your illness.

In addition, they have the ability and authority to call in prescriptions and have your medication delivered directly to the resort. You can reach Doctors on Call at 407-399-DOCS.

Virtual Visit

Many doctors offices will now schedule virtual visits with patients, giving you access to your primary care physician even when you are traveling.Call your doctors office to see if they can squeeze you in for a quick chat about symptoms; if they can’t, you still have the on-call Disney doctors and access to your prescription drugs.

What To Do If You Get Sick at a Non-Disney Resort

If you are staying “off-property” Disney hotel don’t fret, you have options as well. Many of the resorts carry over-the-counter medications in the lobby or at the front desk. Some even have CVS kiosks in the lobby.

Urgent Care Centers near Disney World

If you have a car, you may be better suited to visiting an Urgent Care Center if over-the-counter medicine isn’t working. Here are the two closest to Walt Disney World.

Buena Vista Urgent Care

  • Hours: open 8am-8pm
  • Address: 8200 World Center Dr Orlando, FL 32821
  • Call: (407) 440-1893

AdventHealth Centra Care Lake Buena Vista

  • Hours: open 24 hours
  • Address: 12500 South Apopka Vineland Rd Orlando, FL 32836
  • Call: (407) 934-2273

How To Get A Prescription

If you forgot your medicine or your primary care doctor needs to call in a script for you while in Disney World you can get your meds delivered to your resort hotel via the Turner Drugs Tourist Prescription Service. The drugstore will even deliver items such as baby formula, sunscreen and other items not sold in your resort gift shop.

You can get scripts filled at Turner Drugs . They only take cash or credit card, and will provide you with the paperwork to submit to your insurance when you return home from your Disney trip.

Once your prescription is filled, Turner Drugs will deliver the medication to your resort, and it is always pretty quick.

Turner Drugs is a Disney Preferred Provider, meaning the front desk of each Disney World resort has the phone number of the pharmacy AND Turner Drugs is the only pharmacy that can deliver to on-property Disney hotels and resorts in Florida.

Tips For Staying Healthy on Vacation

While sometimes getting sick is unavoidable you can do a few things to help prevent it.

Stay Hydrated

The Florida heat can really get to people. Be sure to stay hydrated, drink lots of water (not soda!) and this will help ward off headaches and nausea.

Take Allergy Medicine

Seasonal allergies can rear their ugly head in Florida, and oftentimes an over-the-counter allergy pill can ward off the sniffles and sneezes.

Wash Your Hands

This may seem trivial, but there are lots of little hands and germs that touch the queues and high-touch surfaces in Disney World. Hand washing is essential, especially with so many germs wandering around these days. There are several washing stations and hand sanitizer bottles across the Walt Disney World property.

Get Enough Sleep

While you may want to close the park down, and open it the next morning, it’s best to make sure you get enough rest.

Enjoy the Fresh Air

If one thing can be relied on when you go to Florida, it’s that you can be outside.

Healthy Snacks

Stock up on healthy snacks, like fruit, nuts, vegetables, and protein bars (watch that sugar count though). Keeping your body healthy starts with what you put into it.

How to keep the Disney spirit when you are sick in your hotel room

Nobody wants to spend their Disney World vacation sitting in a hotel room under the weather, but it doesn’t have to be any less magical.  You or your little ones may only need 24 hours to feel better.

While waiting for the ick to pass, put on a Disney cartoon, order room service, play cards, or simply just sit on your balcony and enjoy the fresh Florida air.

FAQ: What to do if you get sick at Walt Disney World

What happens if you get sick at disney world.

Stay calm. Depending on the severity of your illness, you may be able to pick up some medication at the hotel shop and rest for a day… or you will need to see a doctor or go to Urgent Care, which is all close to Walt Disney World.

Will Disney refund park tickets due to illness?

Theme park tickets are nonrefundable and nontransferable. HOWEVER, you can change the dates of your tickets. Check when your tickets will expire and see if you can move your ticket dates.

The larger issue will be changing any flight and/or hotel reservations. As long as you give enough notice, most hotels can be canceled with a full refund (depending on how you booked).

Your flights are the tricky part. If you got travel insurance, you should call them right away to see what can be done to get a refund on your flights or if they will cover your change fees on any plane tickets.

What if my child gets sick at Disney World?

While you have spent a lot of money to take your family to Disney World, if your child gets sick, you need to give their little bodies time and space to heal. You can still have a magical time together watching Disney movies in bed (there are always Disney movies and shows on the resort room tvs) and you can call down to the front desk to help bring a little magic to your room as well.

Once your kid(s) are feeling better, hop out to the parks, but take it easy. Twelve hours in the park is sure to cause a rebound. Trust me– been there and done that.

How to not get sick at Disney World?

Stay hydrated, wash your hands, eat vitamin packed fruits and vegetables, and get enough sleep. A tired body picks up germs faster.

walt disney world 009

Is it safe to go to Walt Disney World now?

Yes. It is as safe to go to Walt Disney World as it is to go anywhere else right now where there are crowds. Disney has handwashing facilities and hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the Disney parks. Face coverings are optional inside and outside, so please use a face covering to your own comfort level and respect others for the choices they have made. If you are at the water parks, you can not wear a face mask, so please keep this in mind if you are immune compromised or want to stay masked for most of your Disney experience.

Is it safe to go to Disney World during Covid?

If you have Covid… DO NOT TRAVEL. This is when changing your plans will come in handy, along with having the right travel insurance.

How many people get sick after visiting Disney World?

There is no hard and fast data that has directly tied Disney World to people getting sick. While many do get sick during their trip, it’s hard to tell if they caught a bug on their flight to Walt Disney World, which park they might have been exposed to the germs, and whether their hotel, vacation rental, etc. might have been home to the germs someone picked up.

Why is it that some people get sick on rides, boats, roller coasters, etc., but others do not?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, “ your brain can’t make sense of information sent from your eyes, ears and body.” The inner ear plays a big part in who gets sick and why–  for people who have slightly thicker fluid in their inner ears, they don’t get as sick as much as people with normal or thinner fluid. The older we get, the more our inner ear changes, causing vertigo, more motion sickness, and other fun ailments that come with getting older.

How to avoid motion sickness at Disney World?

There are a number of ways you can avoid motion sickness on the rides at Walt Disney World

  • Avoid the rides that are known to cause motion sickness, like Mad Tea Party, Astro Orbiter, Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at the Magic Kingdom.
  •  Stay hydrated. Dehydration can lead to an upset stomach, quizziness, and more.
  • Don’t overload on junk foods. All of those sweet, sugary treats at Disney World are delicious, but they can also upset your stomach. This will cause motion sickness much faster.
  • Wear acupressure bands, like SeaBands . These work great for me and my son when we need a little help with our car sickness. If you want to spring from something that is FDA cleared for nausea and vomiting relief for motion sickness, you can pick up this rewearable band
  • You can also wear motion sickness patches or take motion sickness pills like these non-drowsy ginger pills or less drowsy Dramamine .

If you have kids who get motion sick, try the patches and bands, but also these ginger lollipops (we love their honey ones when the kids are sick too) and children’s Dramamine .

Can you get motion sickness medication at Disney World?

Yes. You can find motion sickness medications at most hotel gift shops, whether a Walt Disney resort or an Orlando hotel. If you packed a first aid kit, you will usually find motion sickness meds in there too.

What Happens If I Get Sick at Disney World?

Disney First Aid

Q: What happens if I get sick while I’m on vacation at Walt Disney World?

A: Let’s face it, when we’re planning a trip to the most magical place on earth, we rarely think about things like getting ill.  However, feeling under the weather during your family getaway is always a possibility.  It’s also one of those situations where it certainly pays to be prepared and have a plan should someone in your group fall ill. So whether it’s a pre-existing condition or a nasty tummy bug, here are some tips to guide you through what to do if you or a member of your family starts to feel a bit unwell.

What happens if I’m feeling sick at the theme parks?  Whether its motion sickness, a pounding headache, cut or scrape or the onset of a cold, Disney’s First Aid Centers should be your first stop if you are feeling under the weather while at the parks.  You can find these centers at the following locations:

  • Magic Kingdom –  Tucked between Crystal Palace and Casey’s Corner.
  • Epcot – There’s a building between Test Track and the Mexico Pavilion
  • Hollywood Studios – Located near the Main Entrance by Guest Services
  • Animal Kingdom – As you are leaving the Discovery Island section of the park and heading over to Africa.
  • Blizzard Beach – Near Lottawatta Lodge Restaurant
  • Typhoon Lagoon – Near Leaning Palms Restaurant

First aid centers are maintained by an on-duty nurse who is able to dispense single doses of basic over the counter medication,  The nurse will also be on hand to provide support for a variety of minor ailments from bloody noses to bumps and scrapes.

Larger doses of over the counter medications are also available for purchase at the theme parks to see you through the duration of your Disney day.

What happens if I’m feeling sick at my resort?  Disney offers in-room medical services at each of the Walt Disney World resorts on property. From your resort room dial the Front Desk for assistance 24hrs a day. They will be able to provide you with on-site support and direct you to the best services whether it be urgent care or a local pharmacy that can deliver medications directly to your resort.  Guest services at your resort will be eager to do whatever they can to help you feel better, from supplying you with clean linens if you’re room-bound to whipping up a little meal to sooth your sensitive tummy.  If you’re feeling unwell during your stay let Guest Services know what they can do to help.  That’s why they are there!

What happens if I need urgent medical care? Disney works in partnership with Florida Hospital Centra Care Urgent Care Centres.  The Centres are open from 8am to midnight Monday- Friday or 8:00am – 8pm on Saturday and Sunday and are located just outside of Disney Springs. Complimentary transportation is provided from your Walt Disney World Resort and they accept most insurance types. If you want to get in touch with them directly the number is 407.934.2273. The Medical Concierge can also be contacted by your resort front desk and provides a range of services from urgent care in the comfort of visitor’s hotel rooms, same-day dentist and specialist appointments, private clinics, and a mobile pharmacy for prescriptions or forgotten medications.  To schedule an appointment with a medical professional, contact the front desk of your hotel or dial 1-855-932-5252 and request The Medical Concierge.

What if I need to get medication in a hurry? Whether you forgot to pack your pills, misplaced your medication or are running a bit short in addition to the services outlined above, Turner Drugs Tourist Prescription Service works closely with Walt Disney World.  They are a full pharmacy and retail store and offer same day delivery of your medications directly to your resort for you. They only take cash or credit card but they will provide you with the paperwork to send on to your insurance company for coverage.  They are one of Disney’s Preferred Providers so there’s peace of mind in knowing that you are working with a reputable company. They can be reached at 407.828.8125.

Though colds, flu or other seasonal bugs can’t always be avoided there are some steps to make sure that you are looking after yourself while at the parks.  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Purchase Travel Insurance – Disney offers a travel insurance policy that provides coverage should something go wrong in the lead-in or while you are on holiday.  It is $77.50 a person and is a good idea for clients with pre-existing conditions or ailments that may require medical attention while you are at the Walt Disney World.
  • Stay hydrated. In the midst of all of the Disney excitement guests often lose sight of the fact that it’s hot and your body is really sweating.  Its not uncommon to hear of several cases of heat stroke on a busy Disney day.  The best way to avoid this is by drinking lots of water.  Disney has a pretty flexible policy when it comes to bringing drinks into the parks so stock up on bottled water and bring it with you on park days. All of the restaurants are also required to have water stations so that you can grab a quick glass of water on the go.
  • Include a first aid kit in your park ba g- I do not leave my resort without Tylenol, band aids, blister band aids, Pepto, pills for motion sickness, and a myriad of other first aid items.   It makes it easy to tend to any little thing that might go wrong without having to pay theme park prices for basic over the counter items.
  • Take breaks.  A lot of visitors underestimate just how much walking you can do at a Disney theme park in a day.  Last time I was at MagicKingdom, I clocked in 7 miles according to my pedometer.  We want to get the most out of our vacations so there is a tendency to overdo it.  Make sure you are taking time out to relax, rehydrate and get out of the Florida sun.

Guests should always remember that in the event of an extreme emergency, 911 should be called.

So keep a list of important phone numbers from the list above with you and have a bit of a plan in the back of your mind should someone fall ill.  However, if you are in need of support or medical attention always know that a first point of action should be alerting a cast member who will help you get the proper care.  On a Disney vacation, you should never feel like you have to go it alone- Disney staff will always be there to help in whatever way they can.

What To Do If You Get Sick On Your Disney Vacation

What to do if you get sick at Disneyland

Disneyland (Anaheim) and Disney World (Orlando) are both amazing places with tons of tasty treats and endless magic. But they also have extreme weather and those tasty foods can really take a toll on your stomach. And the rides are amazing but can also lead to motion sickness.

Basically, a lot can happen in one trip.

It’s tough to know how to combat every sickness, ailment, and ache but being prepared helps.

Knowing what to do, where to go, and what to pack can all help to make your trip easier and more enjoyable if you do get sick.

Reasons You May Get Sick at Disneyland

Heat stroke .

The sun isn’t to be tested, especially at Disneyland and Disney World. The heat can reach into the 100’s and coupled with humidity it can be dangerous.

Hydrate all day and night. Have water before hitting the parks, during the day while waiting in line, and also before bed.

I have personally had heat rashes on my legs from the heat at Disneyland. They sting and itch and it’s a major sign of dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Take breaks, wear proper attire, and apply sunscreen often.

Early mornings to make rope drop coupled with late nights at the Parks for fireworks or drinks at the Tiki Bar can lead to exhaustion, especially when you’re visiting for more than one day.

Dehydration

It’s easy to forget to hydrate when you’re running from ride to ride and throwing in a fun reservation or show.

Pack some water with you or set a reminder to hydrate or even a water goal for the day. Anything to keep you hydrated and safe.

Upset Stomach

The treats are tasty and very tempting. Mixing sugar and drinks, plus whatever you have for lunch can do a number on your stomach.

Remember to stick to a similar dining routine at the Parks as you do at home. Obviously, more treats will be added but take care not to mix too many different treats at once and be sure to hydrate and also eat high-protein foods.

Motion Sickness

The older you get the easier it is to feel sick on rides you used to love as a kid.

Motion sickness can happen on any ride from the Tea Cups to Thunder Mountain; motion is motion.

Change in Sleeping Habits

This goes back to exhaustion. A lack of sleep can really take a toll on your body and mind. It can make you upset, cranky and sad.

Don’t let a lack of sleep ruin your Disney trip. Take time to relax and sleep in when you can.

Lack of Routine/Schedule

Schedules and routines are very important and when we mess with them it can take a toll on our bodies and sanity.

If you’re a routine person, then stick with it. Whether its a morning run or reading, stick with your routine for your own sanity.

Lack of routine and things that make you feel good can slowly grind you down.

Exposure to High-touch Areas and People

This one is more about getting sick-sick, like the flu.

I have seen a grown child lick their hands and rub them along a row of plastic cups. It was horrifying.

Wash your hand regularly and avoid touching railings as much as possible.

Tips for Not Getting Sick at Disneyland

Stay hydrated.

Stick to your regular water routine. Make it a goal to drink 4 water bottles before lunch or set a reminder on your phone.

Pack a reusable water bottle and keep it close with easy access to make sure you’re actually using it.

You can also ask for free water at restaurants. Take the time during lunch to finish a large glass or bottle of water. It will help keep you hydrated and maintain energy, especially in the heat.

Pack medicines

I unfortunately learned this the hard way but ALWAYS pack some over-the-counter medicines in your bag for Disneyland.

Medicines to pack for Disneyland include; Tums, Pepto, Advil, Mortrin, Tylenol, Lactaid, Immodium, Dramamine, etc. You don’t need to pack a full package of each, just one of the smaller packages or a few pills of each in a small container.

Mini first aid kit disneyland

I’ve had upset stomachs, nausea and cramps while at Disneyland. Don’t let any of that get in your way of enjoying your day.

On long days at the parks, I will be sure to take a pain reliever mid-day to keep my muscles and feet from getting sore. (comfortable shoes also help with this)

Be Aware of Heat/Rain and Temperature Changes

Wear appropriate attire for the weather. Sun protection at Disney Parks is key. The intense heat and brightness and even the random rain showers can lead to feeling sick and sniffly or lead to heat stroke and rashes.

Pack these items in your Disney bag:

  • Cooling towel

Pack a Mini First Aid Kit

A mini first-aid kit is always in my bag. I’m usually carrying around band-aids, moleskin and sometimes even neosporin. I used to have more items like gauze and wet wipes but I haven’t restocked in a bit. This is just part of my usual travel essentials bag and I’m out/low on things because we have had to use them.

Blisters from shoes or scraping your knees has happened on multiple occasions and carrying band-aids helps in these situations.

For Disney trips, I tend to bring a small amount but just a few band-aids doesn’t take up much space at all. Pack it with your Advil and Tums to make the perfect little kit.

Take Breaks

Taking breaks during your Disney vacation will save you. Whether that’s an extended lunch or enjoying a snack in the shade between rides or even heading to the hotel early. Resting will help you immensely and keep you from having a meltdown and also keep you from draining in the sun.

Get lots of Sleep/Rest

It’s difficult to get tons of sleep on vacation but, especially at Disneyland. Between early mornings for rope drop and late nights for fireworks and drinks at a themed bar – 8-10 hours of sleep is hard to come by.

Try aiming for restful sleep. That means hydrating before bed, showering before bed and maybe taking a natural sleep aid like melatonin or magnesium.

Avoid Too Much Sugar

Another way to help from upset stomachs is by limiting your sugar and mixing tons of different foods. I know this one can also seem difficult but there are plenty of great protein-heavy meals and snacks at the parks to get you through the trip while still enjoying a churro and ice cream.

This one sounds funny because of course you will be clean but wash your hands often – more than you think you need to.

There are a lot of high-touch areas from the railings to the lap bars on the rides and then tables and chairs.

Pack wet wipes, and hand sanitizer, and wash your hands before and after meals and of course when using the restroom. Sometimes if a restroom is off the exit of a ride then I will wash my hands right after the ride.

What Happens if You Get Sick at Disneyland

If you get sick at Disneyland, take some time to rest, hydrate and visit a First Aid station.

Pushing yourself when you’re sick will only make it worse. Whether it’s an upset stomach, heat exhaustion, an itchy throat, allergies, or a small scrape – take the time to rest.

The First Aid stations at Disneyland and Disney World offer a place to rest and hydrate and they carry First-aid items and medicines.

What to do if you get sick at Disneyland:

  • Stick to a bland diet
  • Visit the First Aid Station
  • Notify a Cast Member
  • In-Room Treatment
  • Prescription Drug Delivery

How to still Enjoy Disney vacation if you get sick

We’ve had a number of vacations (especially Disney vacations) where we were dehydrated, had insane headaches, upset stomachs and hurt knees. We’ve had to go back early to the hotel on a few occasions.

If this happens, there are still a few things you can do to enjoy your time like

  • Rest in the room with board games and a movie.
  • Enjoy a movie at the hotel. They usually show nightly movies on the lawn.
  • Watch the fireworks from your hotel if you can or put on some comfy clothes and go to another viewing area.

Overall Vacation Tips

For any vacation, it’s good to be prepared. I know most of us might not think anything like getting sick or hurt can happen at Disneyland but it can and has happened.

Always be prepared and pack your medications, EpiPen, inhaler, etc. for your trips. Disney does offer medication drop-off through their partner AdventHealth but only if you are staying on Disney property. At Walt Disney World there is a service that services the resort area called Turner Drugs . They do not work with Disney but are a popular option for visiting guests.

Here are a few tips for traveling:

  • Know where the Nearest Urgent Care Is
  • Double Check Prescriptions are Packed
  • Know where Emergency Center/First Aid areas are at the Parks/Hotel

Conclusion & Recap

Once again, getting sick on any vacation is tough but getting sick on a Disney vacation is definitely not magical. Luckily there are some easy ways to keep you energized and safe from the sun like staying hydrated, wearing proper sun protection, packing your go-to over-the-counter medications and taking breaks.

Remember to contact a Cast Member at the Parks if you have an emergency and don’t be afraid to visit the First Aid stations.

I hope this post helped you out. If you have any questions, please leave them below in the comments – I’d love to help any way I can.

See you at the Parks!

  • The First Aid Center at Disneyland is located at the end of Main Street at the Baby Care Center.
  • The First Aid Center at California Adventure is located next to the Chamber of Commerce on Buena Vista Street.
  • The closest Urgent Care locations to Disneyland are A&C Urgent Care and Concentra Urgent Care.
  • If you get sick at Disneyland or Disney World visit the first aid station and if there is an emergency contact a Cast Member.

  • Emergency health services goes through Disney’s partnership with AdventHealth
  • Disney World sells over-the-counter medicines. Check with a Cast Member to see if they carry the specific one you need. You may need to go off property for certain medicines.
  • All Disneyland and Walt Disney World tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable but the Plan Disney Panel did offer a few tips if you have to cancel your Disney trip due to illness. Read here .

Sick At Disney World? Here’s Why You Should Plan Ahead In Case You Get Sick

You have spent months saving and planning for your magical Disney World vacation. The day arrives and you enter the gates of Walt Disney World. You and your family can’t wait to experience all the fun at the parks. Suddenly your child becomes sick at Disney World. Now what?!

We have unfortunately dealt with this exact scenario three times on our Disney World vacations. Once with my daughter, Elizabeth, when she was 4 years old, a different time when my mom and I both got sick during our trip, and our most recent visit where a cold took out two of our group.

Here’s what you should do:

1. don’t panic.

If you are currently in the parks head to a first aid station.

Nurses are available at the first aid stations during park hours. These nurses can provide bandages or over-the-counter medications for a minor illness. If the illness is more serious, they can manage immediate care until an ambulance arrives.

We visited with the nurses at Magic Kingdom to learn more. That facility has two treatment rooms and several bays for ill patients. The nurses were well versed in patient care and extremely nice, too.

Being sick at Disney World is no fun. Knowing what to do just in case you do end up sick while at Disney World is some of the best advice I can give, but hope you never need. #disneyworld #sickatdisney #disneyplanning

If you are at your Disney World Resort call down to the Front Desk.

The front desk is your friend. They can walk you through available options. This can include area urgent care centers, hospitals or physicians that can make a “house call” to your room during certain hours.

2. Plan Ahead For Being Sick at Disney World

I know that sounds a little crazy, but trust me. You would rather plan ahead and not need it than find yourself in a panic at 2am with a feverish child and no medications.

I always make sure I have any prescription medications we need daily or even those that are “as needed” (in the case of a rescue inhaler or Epi-Pen) packed in our carry on luggage.

Being sick at Disney World is no fun. Knowing what to do just in case you do end up sick while at Disney World is some of the best advice I can give, but hope you never need.

I also pack acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) in adult and children doses. If you have children that still take liquid acetaminophen or ibuprofen I recommend that you pack these medications in your checked luggage (in two ziptop bags). Although you can bring liquid medications larger than 3.4 ounces in your carry-on they will require extra security screening. Find out more specifics about this Transportation Security Administration policy here .

Mucinex Mini Melt Packets ( order on Amazon ) are also always in my carry-on luggage. This ensures I have a cough and cold medication for anyone in our family 4 years old or older. As with all over-the-counter medications make sure you read the instructions carefully before using for yourself or others. Always consult with a physician or pharmacist if unsure about any information on the label of the medication.

If you didn’t pack any medications the gift shop has some basics like Tylenol or Advil for both children and adults. They sometimes also carry one cough or cold medication and something like Claritin.

3. Make sure to take good care of your health prior to your trip

Get your rest and make sure you take care of your health before you leave. Being well fed and rested can help you be more able to fight off an illness. And you don’t want to be tired when you arrive for your trip anyway!

Final Thoughts

Many illnesses at Disney World can be minor inconveniences if handled properly. Although I hope you never have this experience when visiting Disney World at least now you know available options and items to pack just in case.

Having a sick family member at Disney World can certainly be disappointing. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! In usual Disney fashion the staff will do all they can to assist you in finding the care you need.

This article is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always seek the advice of a physician or other qualified health provider for managing food allergies and other medical conditions.

The Easy Way to Handle Getting SICK In Disney World

By Kelly Oliveros 4 Comments

For the past several years, we’ve seen the presence of  AdventHealth  throughout various parts of Disney World.

sick after disney world visit

Advent Health Signage

In 2019, AdventHealth hosted an outdoor kitchen at EPCOT’s International Flower & Garden Festival.  AdventHealth has also served as a sponsor for events in Disney World like the 2020 Taste of EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays . In 2020 and 2021, we saw AdventHealth providing temperature checks throughout the resort (note that regular temperature checks are no longer happening at Disney World) and Disney teamed up with AdventHealth to install some special technology for their children’s hospital in Orlando . Last year, Disney and AdventHealth announced some changes that could significantly impact your future visits!

What’s Going On?

Last year, Disney announced that AdventHealth is now the OFFICIAL healthcare provider at Walt Disney World .  Because of this partnership, there has been an expansion of virtual care options for those visiting Disney World hosted RIGHT in the My Disney Experience app.   If you or a loved one has ever gotten sick in Disney World , you know what a big deal this is!

sick after disney world visit

Advent Health Cast Member at Temperature Screening

Previously, it was a MAJOR headache if anyone traveling in your party required medical attention on your trip. We’ve gotten sick, needed prescriptions, and, in rare cases, needed emergency medical attention before. It was basically on you to figure out how to get to an urgent care clinic, get your medicines, and more. The changes make it so so much easier and more convenient to get the care you need.

There is now a suite of virtual services available for those who may find themselves in Disney World with healthcare questions . These services include Athletic Training resources, runDisney resources, Emergency Room resources, Urgent Care and Virtual Care, a Care Concierge Call Center, Vacation Planning resources, and Equipment and Prescription Delivery.

There will be resources available both in-person and virtually. Disney and AdventHealth are calling this a “world of wellness.”

If you search for “Advent” or “AdventHealth” in the My Disney Experience app you should find an option for something called “Guest Health Care Services Presented by AdventHealth.”

sick after disney world visit

That’ll lead you to a separate page detailing more about the health care services being provided by AdventHealth. You can see a bit more about those services in the app, and it also has an option that will link you to the AdventHealth page where you can get more information, see how to download the AdventHealth app, and more.

sick after disney world visit

Let’s break down some of the BIG features you’ll be able to take advantage of during upcoming trips!

Video Visits

First up, AdventHealth will be providing virtual healthcare visits for non-urgent matters.  If you find yourself feeling a little bit sick during your vacation to Disney World and want to meet with a doctor (but don’t want/need to go in-person for an appointment) you’ll actually be able to save time and meet virtually with a doctor or nurse practitioner through the AdventHealth app.

sick after disney world visit

The doctor or nurse practitioner will be able to give their diagnosis and prescribe treatments for minor ailments . Prescriptions can then be sent to a nearby pharmacy or even delivered to your Disney World hotel (more on that in a second).

What’s REALLY convenient about this feature is that it’s available 24/7, whenever you need it, no appointment necessary! To take advantage of this service, you will need to download the AdventHealth app though, so just keep that in mind.  It would be best to download this app well in advance of your trip and set everything up so that you can have it ready to go if you ever need to use it during your stay.

sick after disney world visit

You can request a video visit through the AdventHealth app for $59.  Some insurance may cover the cost, so you’ll want to check with your provider. Since the global health crisis started, we’ve seen a huge uptick in insurance companies offering teledoc visits like this for a small fee. So, depending on your insurance, it might be cheaper to go through their recommended service. But this is a great option for guests now.

Keep in mind that there are first aid centers in Disney World’s theme parks as well if you need assistance with a minor health issue (these are also now presented by AdventHealth). You can visit a local hospital or call 911 if necessary for more severe medical issues.

AdventHealth Care Concierge

Another feature that’s available as part of this partnership between Disney World and AdventHealth is “Care Concierge.”  According to AdventHealth, when you reach out to them from Disney World, their Care Concierge team will be ready to assist you.

sick after disney world visit

Disney says that the “ dedicated AdventHealth care concierge experience center will help meet guests’ needs , such as assistance with doctor’s appointments, virtual care, medical equipment and prescription delivery to Walt Disney World Resort hotels.” This Care Concierge experience center should be able to assist guests in getting the information and help they need while on vacation. Need medical assistance and not sure where to start while in Disney World? This is a great place to find help.

You can contact the Care Concierge center by visiting the AdventHealth portal, which is linked on the My Disney Experience app. The phone number listed on the site is (407) 939-7480 . The service is open daily from 7AM to 11PM EST.

Centra Care Urgent Care

If you end up needing to go to an urgent care clinic during your stay, there’s information about AdventHealth’s services in the My Disney Experience app now as well.

The AdventHealth Centra Care Urgent Care clinics are open 7 days a week , and their Lake Buena Vista clinic is actually open 24 hours , making it very convenient for anyone who may need assistance.

sick after disney world visit

Disney World First Aid

If you’re worried about getting to the Urgent Care Center, it’s important to know that transportation to Centra Care Urgent Care is actually complimentary for Disney World Resort guests and it can be arranged through Disney’s first aid centers, through front desk Cast Members at the Disney hotels, or by calling the AdventHealth Experience Center.

sick after disney world visit

Hopefully you won’t need a trip to an Urgent Care center during your trip, but if you do, it’s good to know that this complimentary transportation service is available and that you’ll be able to get help from a nearby urgent care center 24 hours a day.

Prescription Delivery

Thanks to the partnership between Disney and AdventHealth, guests at Disney World will also get some prescription delivery services.  This can be massively convenient for future trips.

sick after disney world visit

If you find yourself in Orlando and realize that you forgot to pack your pills, you didn’t pack enough, you lost them, or anything else, AdventHealth’s Experience Center may be able to help.

You can give them a call 7 days a week and see what arrangements can be made to get your needed prescriptions delivered to your pharmacy of choice or straight to your Disney World hotel.

sick after disney world visit

Prescription delivery is something you’ve been able to do for a while with other services not associated with Disney, but it typically cost significantly more since these services often didn’t submit to your insurance on your behalf. Having it coordinated with AdventHealth and Disney could make it more convenient and accessible for guests.

Medical Equipment

If you’re planning on visiting Disney World and know you’ll need to rent medical equipment, or the need to rent this equipment arises during your stay, AdventHealth can also assist with that too. Again, this can be really helpful towards making your trip that much easier.

A wide variety of medical equipment can be delivered conveniently to your Disney Resort hotel. All you need to do is call the AdventHealth Experience Center to purchase or rent the equipment and schedule it for delivery prior to your trip.

sick after disney world visit

They’ve got a whole host of items available including a walker with a seat and breaks, crutches, a knee scooter, a hospital bed, and more.

sick after disney world visit

If you need oxygen tanks or other items, they may be able to assist with that as well, but a physician’s order is required.

sick after disney world visit

Just be aware that not all services may be covered by insurance, so you’ll want to consult with your plan to see what is and what is not covered.

More Features

The AdventHealth section in the My Disney Experience app also provides information about how guests at Disney World can contact AdventHealth and provides links to help you find things like the First Aid Centers in the parks or the Centra Care Urgent Care.

sick after disney world visit

It also links to various guest services and pages that can help guests with their specific needs, like special dietary requests and more.

sick after disney world visit

And it links to resources for guests who need to rent ECVs or wheelchairs.

sick after disney world visit

The AdventHealth World of Wellness website also has a whole list of questions and answers to help guests who may be on vacation. There are answers to questions about potentially going into labor during your trip for pregnant guests, chemotherapy services, and more.

If you need physical therapy during your trip, AdventHealth can help with that too. Their website notes that local AdventHealth Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation teams can provide outpatient physical therapy.

There are also travel tips, articles and tips related to run Disney, and much more on the AdventHealth website, which you can check out by visiting the AdventHealth Portal linked on the My Disney Experience app.

Whether you’re looking for advice on building your endurance, help with dietary restrictions, or tips for traveling while pregnant, there’s a whole host of resources available.

Emergency Room in Flamingo Crossings Town Center

Disney and AdventHealth have also shared that AdventHealth will be building a NEW emergency room in the Flamingo Crossings Town Center .

The ER will be staffed by a “comprehensive clinical team” including board-certified emergency physicians and emergency nurses. AdventHealth notes that “the design of the facility and team member training will bring an enhanced patient experience for those who need emergency care.”

The Flamingo Crossings area is just a few minutes away from Disney World’s theme parks. In the photo below you can see the Residence Inn by Marriott Orlando at Flamingo Crossings Town Center (upper left) and Disney’s Animal Kingdom toward the bottom center/right.

AdventHelth is hoping that the new ER will open in 2023 . When it does, it’ll provide guests with a trusted ER option that is very close to the parks, making it all the more convenient.

Click here to see our post about AdventHealth’s announcement about this new ER.

Overall, this expanded partnership between Disney World and AdventHealth is meant to  provide you with greater peace of mind. While you could do most or all of this on your own previously (and could continue to do it with other providers in the future if you want), having it all coordinated with Disney and AdventHealth could make it that much easier. If something were to go wrong on your trip, it could be comforting to know that a system is already in place to deal with a variety of medical issues.

Be sure to look for the AdventHealth information page on My Disney Experience to check out their resources ahead of time. In advance of your next trip, it may also be a good idea to download the AdventHealth app and get that set up so you’ll have it ready if you need it.

Kirsty, I think this webpage will help you sort out the COVID testing options at the urgent care mentioned in this post. Hi, I tried to download the adventheath app and I can’t find in the App Store. Will this service be available to Canadians or other foreign nationals. I’ll certainly ask when I get there in March, this is awesome! As for Covid testing, you can buy kits before you leave your country of origine, do the test on FaceTime and get results to go home. Easy easy and you get the results via email and in my case, Air Canada accepts it and so goes the government . Boy was that a stress relief.

Disney’s Bold Move: Exclusive Park Days Announced Amid Guest Relationship Crisis

in Walt Disney World

A girl in a red dress happily kisses Mickey Mouse on the nose at Disney, with other visitors and the castle blurred in the background.

Walt Disney World Resort continues to cater to a select group of guests as more exclusive days have been added to the park’s calendar. But is it enough to remedy a nearly-broken relationship?

Walt Disney World passholders in front of the Magic Kingdom castle.

Disney World Adds More “Good-To-Go” Days for Passholders: Is It Enough?

Disney has introduced three additional ‘ Good-to-Go Days ‘ for Walt Disney World Annual Passholders in early May 2024. These dates include May 7, 8, and 9. During these designated days, annual passengers are granted entry to the theme parks without needing a reservation , applicable across all four Walt Disney World parks.

The current ‘Good-to-Go Days’ can be accessed via the Walt Disney World Passholder Admission Calendar. These reservation-free admission days encompass May 1, 7, 8, and 9, 2024. Disney has announced that ‘Good-to-Go Days’ will be periodically added, with releases expected days or weeks in advance.

Just to let you know, blackout days will be enforced based on the tier of the Annual Pass. Additionally, Annual Passholders retain the privilege to visit without a park reservation after 2 p.m., except when visiting Magic Kingdom Park on weekends, as blackout dates remain applicable.

Disney characters, including Goofy, Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Duck with Annual Passholders cards in their hands inside of Disney World.

To utilize the Park Hopper benefit, Annual Passholders must secure a theme park reservation for their initial park visit and enter that park before accessing another. Alternatively, they may enter a theme park without a reservation on a “good-to-go” day for that park or after 2 p.m. (excluding Magic Kingdom on Saturdays and Sundays) before transitioning to another park.

With the rollout of ‘Good-to-Go Days,’ Disney discontinued the previous Bonus Days program, which permitted guests to make park reservations for a specific park without affecting their reservation allocation.

The addition of ‘Good-to-Go Days’ signifies Disney’s attempt to mend its strained relationship with Annual Passholders by offering them more flexibility and value for their investment. These exclusive days allow pass holders to access the theme parks without reservation, providing a sense of priority and convenience.

By introducing more reservation-free days , Disney acknowledges the frustrations and challenges pass holders may have faced with the previous reservation system.

This move demonstrates Disney’s commitment to enhancing the Passholder experience and addressing their concerns, ultimately working towards rebuilding trust and loyalty among this crucial segment of its customer base.

Additionally, by discontinuing the Bonus Days program and replacing it with ‘Good-to-Go Days,’ Disney aims to streamline its offerings and ensure clarity and consistency in its Passholder benefits, further contributing to restoring a positive relationship with its pass holders.

At Disney World, adult visitors increasingly mix remote work and play

Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World

When working remotely on a laptop, technically, a worker can be anywhere. They could even be at Disney World.

From Disney bloggers and freelance journalists to tech industry professionals, travel agents and people with double monitors at Epcot, adult Disney World fans are documenting their remote work habit from inside the parks in social media posts.

It’s a phenomenon that has gained steam since around 2022, with a post-pandemic surge of people returning to the theme parks and the rise of both remote work and jobs in which people never truly sign off.

“People want to move to Orlando, they want to feel like they live in Disney World,” said AJ Wolfe, who has been writing about Disney parks, including via her popular Disney Food Blog , for more than 15 years. “You’re closer to the place that makes you happy, and you can access it much more quickly when you’re done working.”

Wolfe has been working in the parks and advising people where the best places are to work within them for almost as long. Since the parks reopened in late 2020 after Covid-19 forced their first-ever extended closure, Wolfe said she’s been noticing more people purposefully choosing to work remotely from inside Disney World.

“Lines are blurring between conventional workspaces and leisure time across the board,” she said. “I think people are adopting and looking to adopt a situation where they can work at the same time they’re experiencing something they enjoy.”

Disney World’s committed and vociferous fan base — there are dozens of online communities and creators dedicated to almost everything about the parks — has wrestled with the remote work practices.

The emerging practice has drawn some disbelief — and criticism. In late April, an Orlando resident posted on the Disney World subreddit about setting up a workspace at a cafe that opened in 2022 in Epcot. The thread had to be locked after users started complaining that the remote worker could be taking up a table that other guests wanted to use to eat (the post was from a Tuesday afternoon and the cafe appeared mostly empty).

Disney has also installed more places throughout the resort where people can charge their phones, since the mobile Disney World app has become an essential part of the experience — guests use it to bypass lines, order food, scan tickets, check wait times and more. Many counter service and cafe-style restaurants inside the parks have places to charge your devices. The newer wireless charging ports, like at the Epcot cafe, and outlets have in turn provided a place for people to plug in their tablet or laptop.

“I think they also probably realized that would also benefit folks who have just moved to Orlando to be closer to the parks and need some place to work,” Wolfe said.

Walt Disney World didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The rise of remote work at Disney World is accompanied by the steady growth of online content related to Disney Parks in general. Wolfe, who is working on a book about the “ Disney Adults ” phenomenon, said online “side hustles” related to Disney World are becoming more common.

Some of the people who have posted about working inside Disney World also offer travel-planning services to other Disney fans. Dozens of people have full-time jobs creating daily content about and from within the Disney parks, posting on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and blogs. They are almost never officially affiliated with The Walt Disney Co. They often fall somewhere between independent media and professional fans .

Separately, there are even more people who don’t make money from posting about Disney, but instead find community from sharing their Disney experiences online.

“It’s that vibe of ‘Epcot is my coffee shop,’” Wolfe said. “Instead of ‘I’m going to close my laptop and start watching Netflix,’ it’s like, ‘I’m going to close my laptop and go on Spaceship Earth.’”

3 Disney theme park splurges to skip long lines

  • Updated: May. 05, 2024, 11:21 a.m. |

Disney magic doesn’t come cheap. But while some expenses at Disney theme parks can feel painfully high, they can also often pay for themselves — and then some. These three Disney upgrades — available at both Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, and Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida — are worth the cost.

Waiting in line at Disney might feel like a rite of passage, but it doesn’t need to be. Genie+ is a paid add-on service that lets you bypass most of the line at some attractions. I use the extra time saved with Genie+ to try attractions that tend to have fewer lines. I’m looking at you, Enchanted Tiki Room.

Genie+ prices vary by day, park and demand. Expect to pay at least $30 per person per day at Disneyland and at least $15 to $20 per person per day at Disney World. Though a family of four could easily spend more than $100 on line-skipping privileges on busy days, it can be worth it — particularly if you’re on a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Time is money, and you don’t want to spend all of it waiting in line.

Line-skipping access looks to be increasingly relevant as crowds continue to grow. According to The Walt Disney Co.’s earnings report for the quarter ending in December 2023, Disneyland saw year-over-year attendance growth versus the quarter ending in December 2022.

And attendance is only expected to increase, especially as Disney continues to add rides or update themes. For instance, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is scheduled to open in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Park in California in 2024.

2. A stay at a Disney-owned resort

Disney-owned hotels have benefits that other, nearby — off-property — hotels can’t offer. That includes closer proximity to the theme parks in most cases. For example, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Pixar Place Hotel have their own entrance to Disney California Adventure Park.

Disney also ranks among the rare resort-area chains that don’t charge resort fees .

But perhaps the most important reason to book a stay at a Disney-owned resort? Early theme park entry. Hotel guests who hold a valid theme park ticket for that day can enter the parks 30 minutes before everyone else.

In Florida, early entry is offered at all four Walt Disney World theme parks every day. In California, the benefit alternates between Disneyland or Disney California Adventure (depending on the day).

Getting to the park at opening time is critical for jumping on the most popular attractions before the lines back up. The ability to enter 30 minutes before the official opening time gives you an additional leg up.

Although Disney resorts tend to be more expensive than off-property hotels , you can find some deals. According to Disney price tracking site Touring Plans, nightly rates for Disney’s All-Star resorts start at $133 (though they can run over $300 during peak season).

3. A character meal

My family and I nabbed a photo with Mickey, Minnie and Pluto during breakfast at Storytellers Cafe at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. Prices start at $52 per person, but it enables you to meet characters without a theme park ticket — and without waiting in line.

If you plan to stand in line to meet Disney characters, there’s a way to meet them without the line.

Sure, you’ll pay at least $50 for the privilege, but at least it comes with food. At a Character Dining restaurant, a handful of costumed characters mosey around the dining area while you eat. Since they make a point to stop at every table, you won’t even have to wait in line; they come to you.

And with no line, the whole experience tends to be a lot more relaxed. Diners can spend more time with each character than the usual “love and shove” encounter that happens when there’s an hourlong wait to meet Mickey Mouse.

There are four Character Dining restaurants in California and about a dozen in Florida. Meal prices vary, but some of the most popular can run more than $100 per person. Note that for restaurants inside the theme parks, you’ll need a ticket, too.

For example, dinner at Cinderella’s Royal Table in the Magic Kingdom Park starts at $84 per adult before tax, tip and optional beverage add-ons. But the princess dining option lets you meet multiple royal ladies in one go.

Consider that not far away, you can meet Cinderella and one other princess for no additional cost (other than a park entry ticket) at Princess Fairytale Hall, but wait times tend to run from 30 to 90 minutes.

In contrast, the meal at Cinderella Castle tends to entail a meet-and-greet with four princesses. Plus, you get the unique experience of dining inside the iconic Disney landmark.

Not all meals are that expensive. At Cape May Cafe, in Disney’s Beach Club Resort near Epcot , you can have breakfast with Minnie Mouse and some of her friends clad in beach attire.

For $47 per adult (before tax and tip), you can meet Disney characters and nosh on all-you-can-eat salted caramel “beach buns,” Mickey-shaped waffles, omelets, biscuits, gravy and more. And since that restaurant is in one of the Disney World hotels, you won’t need a theme park ticket .
