What travelers are saying

"Did the Jordan Essential Tour, it was absolutely amazing. This was my first Group Travel Tour and I loved it. I was worried about being the oldest one on the tour (I’m 34), but it was a good mix of ages. It was incredible to travel with people of different nationalities. Our Tour guide Issa was great. At all times he was really helpful. Taught us a lot about Jordanien history and culture. The tour was a great mix of everything...sightseeing, exploring, chillin and partying."

Europe Tour Selection Trips

  • River cruises  are an appealing way to tour Europe in a relaxed mode that offers sightseeing in both atmospheric villages and big cities.
  • Europe is about more than high culture; active Europe tours include cycling in Greece, hiking in the French or Swiss Alps, even walking across England.
  • Point-to-point walking or cycling tours through the countryside are a great way to meet locals along trails, in pubs, or in small town settings.
  • For the truly adventurous, consider tours that include running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain; “mud walking” in Holland; or glacier walking in  Switzerland .
  • The “If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium” rush-rush-through-seven countries-in-a- week bus tours are mostly passé; consider focusing on one or just a few countries at a time.
  • Spain-Portugal; Denmark-Sweden-Norway; Czech Republic-Austria-Hungary; and Belgium-Netherlands are among those countries that make for nice regional tours.
  • While you can see something of Europe in a week, allowing at least ten days to two weeks for one to three countries is more satisfying.
  • Don’t be too concerned with language barriers when booking your tour, since many Europeans now speak English, and your guides can translate when necessary.
  • Many Europeans go on vacation for the entire month of August, so visiting in September or October can be ideal; the weather is cooler, too.

Additional details

Traveling to  Europe  - ETIAS

Europe is implimenting a new travel authorization system that American travelers will need to enter into Europe’s EU and Schengen Zone.  ETIAS, which stands for EU Travel Information and Authorisation System,  will charge a fee and check security credentials for travelers visiting for business, tourism, medical or transit purposes.

ETIAS won’t be required until 2022 but there will be a six month grace period  which means travelers won’t be required to have approval until 2023.

Read more about traveling to Europe and what the ETIAS means for American travelers.

New Update -  Europe  Ban

As of July 1, 2020 the European Union has opened their borders to tourists from 15 different countries.

The reopening plan was based on health criteria, and ultimately officials decided to leave the U.S. off the list. The list of countries allowed to enter Europe will be reviewed every two weeks to keep up with the changing reality of coronavirus outbreaks.

Here is the full list of countries that the European Union has opened up to:

  • New Zealand
  • South Korea

Where does the language barrier matter?

One of the most fascinating qualities of Europe is the way that countries so close together, with so much interaction, have maintained strong individuality. This manifests in culture, customs, and of course - language. There are 24 official languages in the EU, but countries both in the Union and outside it often have their own official languages.

Because of this, if you are planning a trip around Europe - you will likely run into a situation where you cannot speak the local language. Don’t worry! Most Europeans can speak more than two languages, and in Western Europe, as well as capital cities, this means many Europeans speak English.

Eastern Europe & Russia

One common concern when traveling to Europe is that there is very little English spoken in Eastern Europe -- this is, however, rapidly changing. As the popularity of destinations like Budapest , Prague , Riga , and Krakow continues to boom, many more young people there are becoming fluent in English.

There are, however, several places where English speakers are a little harder to come by. Four countries where English speakers are uncommon include:

Russia (with the exception of St. Petersburg)

Rural Spain

As can be expected, there are also countries with specific regional dialects. This is unlikely to be a problem -- but it is something good to be prepared for! For example, even if you are fluent in French, you might not be able to understand Alsatian (spoken in the Alsace region of region, including the city Strasbourg ) or Catalan (spoken in the southwestern corner of  France).

Best Winter Family European Vacations

A winter vacation to Europe is a timeless and magical experience, especially when the trip is shared with loved ones. Here are three of the best locations to keep in mind for when you’re planning your next trip for you and your family.

1.   Zermatt, Switzerland Take an alpine tour of Europe to this picturesque town is nestled between the sharp and dramatic mountains. Not only this, but it is at the base of one the Alps’ most famous peaks: the Matterhorn.

Enthusiastic climbers, skiers, and snowboarders will thrill in some of the best skiing Europe has to offer. Afterwards, head back to your chalet and tuck into a steaming mug of Swiss hot chocolate before heading out for a traditional fondue dinner.

2.   St. Petersburg, Russia One of the most popular cities to visit throughout the year, visitors come to St. Petersburg in the winter to beat the crowds and experience a genuine Russian snow. You will be stunned by the sight of the frozen Neva river, and snow piling on the arches of the St. Nicholas cathedral.

When things get too chilly outdoors, take a well earned break by visiting the infamous Russian ballet and opera, or take an educational tour of the Hermitage museum inside of the Winter Palace.

3.   Canary Islands, Spain For families looking to escape the cold, Europe is still a great destination. Consider the Canary Islands, which are located off the coast of West Africa, and are favored with sunbathing weather all year round.

With opportunities to go hiking, jetski, waterski, surf, even sandboard off Gran Canaria’s massive, Sahara-like sand dunes, there are countless ways to have active fun. At night, indulge in the island’s unique cuisine.

Flying to Europe

What with the introduction of so many new budget airlines, many travelers are curious about new flight options to, and around, the continent. With fuel costs low, and the value of the dollar on the rise, trips to Europe are cheaper for Americans than ever before. This interest is increased by the fact that many vacation packages do not include flights, and it is still necessary to book your own.

Airlines like Ryanair travel within the continent very cheaply, but be prepared to forgo checking in, and airplane tray tables, much less built in TV’s. These budget airlines also have stringent and unique restrictions. For example, Ryanair requires that you check in before arriving at the airport, or you will lose your ticket. Another downside to "flying budget" is that customer service can be very difficult to obtain with these no-frills airlines, and cancellations without any recourse are also relatively common.

If you aren't willing to risk a budget airline, there are still ways to find cheap flights. One good tip is to look airlines fly out of cities that serve as a hub (an example in the U.S. would be the Atlanta airport). Whether you are flying for a Europe tour from the USA, or India, flights from these airports are usually lower in price.

First step, working out what you want from your time away from home? You know you like the comfort and friendliness of travelling with others - the safety and organisation done for you!

Now hone-in on the pace – are the best group tours for singles in Europe with lots of stops and lots of destinations? You love the pace to be fast and the experience to be jam packed. Or is your style more laid back, preferring 2, 3 or even more nights of stay in each place?

You  want to taste all the delights each place has to offer,  and explore slowly and thoroughly.  There’s no one best European tour for singles – it all gets down to what you want out of your trip. Research the best tour companies for solos in Europe . Look for award winners and traveller testimonials – nothing like hearing from travellers that have gone before you. You can soon work out the best European tours for singles !

Once you narrow the choice with the tour pace, now decide what’s important to you about your night’s rest;  is it budget over quality, and just the essentials is good enough for you, or you like a bit more comfort of true luxe style? You’ve checked off your tour pace and accommodation rating – now a big factor – is big better than small?

Is Big Better than Small?

There’s no right answer when choosing a big coach tour over a small group solos only tour experience – it’s personal choice and pros and cons to each when you’re travelling solo. But, here’s a few pointers to mull over when you’re narrowing down your choices.

  • Small solo travel groups are a great way to get to know all your fellow solo travel buddies, and enjoy a real sense of belonging.
  • Big groups are fun when it comes to party time and may save some dollars but the flip side is that you’re just another one of those big coaches hauling through Europe.
  • Small groups will offer a more authentic experience as you can visit places that the big bus tours simply can’t – like dining in smaller local restaurants, like a local – just can’t be done on a big bus tour.
  • The tour manager on the best European tours for singles is an invaluable resource when it comes to recommending where to go and where to eat. They’ll know what sights to see, how to chat with the locals and how to navigate those maps! This is especially helpful when you’re travelling by yourself because you don’t have someone else to help you make these decisions! Small groups can offer more individual attention, but if you don’t need that then a big coach tour may be for you.

So much to consider but thinking about the group size sounds like a great way to measure the best European tours for singles when it comes to making your pick.

Crunch Time. How Much for Travelling Solo?

Travelling solo and we’re all thinking the same – the dreaded single supplement. The ultimate European tours for singles offer reasonably priced single supplements. It’s mostly unavoidable and a major single traveller’s gripe – paying more because you’re not sharing a room. But the other way to think of it is that we all pay the same price for the hotel, just that if you share a room, you’re sharing the cost.  Hopefully it puts the single supplement in a new light – it’s just that tours and hotels can promote a lower price based on sharing – the price looks appealing but it’s not a reality when you’re travelling solo, and you’re not up for sharing.   So, pay the extra and guarantee you get your own single room while travelling on your solo tours Europe but check you won’t give away too many of your hard earned holiday dollars needlessly. The best tour companies for solo travellers don’t inflate these supplements, and they keep them to a minimum. Alternatively, the best European tours for singles give you the choice to also share with a person of the same sex. For some of us, that’s a happy outcome – you know if you’re a good sharer or not. And if you’re happy to share it’s a nice saving.

Heads Up On The European Room Size

When choosing a company offering group tours of Europe for singles it’s a good idea to enquire what size rooms are offered for solo tours to Europe. Many hotels in Europe have an undesirable selection of single rooms; smaller and pokier than a room for two, and often in the least appealing location of the hotel.  We can’t say why rooms for single travellers whereever built like this, but it happens. And, if you’re travelling solo that last thing you want is to be made to feel like a second class citizen, shuffled off to the least appealing room in the hotel.  Big tip – check with the tour operator how they book rooms for single travellers! Perhaps they’ll offer you double rooms on your solos tour Europe, but perhaps they don’t.  Even better, perhaps the accommodation chosen by your European tours for singles provider are unique and authentic in style and everyone is different!

Making Your Europe Solo Travel Plans

If you’re one that likes to put your own touches to your travel plans then think about ways to plans this for your solo tours Europe. A great way to start out is taking a day or so before your solo travel tour starts. Ease into it – if you’ve got a long flight and time differences, it’s a good idea to pad in a few extra days to recharge and adjust to your new time zone.

Plus, in free time, investigate options to make your own discoveries or even book other half day touring experiences. There’s endless options and in big cities throughout Europe you can find fun experiences to join for a few hours, half a day or more or even night time fun like bar hopping tours – check out tours on AirBNB or TripAdvisor – a great place to start to get the ideas flowing. So now the fun begins! You’ve got a great idea of what your best European tours for singles looks like. You’re armed with suggestions for choosing the group tours of Europe for singles that will be  just right for you!

The best solos tours in Europe are the ones where you’ve down the leg work, narrowed down what you want and how you like to travel but left all the left all the hard yakka to someone else – choose your tour, book on, pack and go!

Best for Ages 35-50 : El Camino Travel

Courtesy of Encounter Travel

According to El Camino Travel ’s founder, Katalina Mayorga, elder millennials are their strongest customer base. That means if you were born between 1980 and 1985 approximately, you’ll find yourself among curious, like-minded solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in destinations like Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Eastern European nation of Georgia. Some trips even add a professional photographer to capture shareable shots so you can remain in the moment.

All of El Camino’s guided, small group trips max out at 12 participants. They’re also curated with an ethos of preserving and protecting local culture, the environment, and communities. For example, some of their partners include the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville in Tobago and La Sierra Artist Residency in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Best Sustainable : G Adventures

Courtesy of Intrepid Travel

G Adventures is particularly known for its sustainable, responsible ethos. The company works with small, locally-owned hotels and operators to ensure your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting; outlines policies around child and animal welfare practices; aims to reduce single-use plastics, and works to ensure experiences taking place in Indigenous communities align with community goals.

Founded in 1990, G Adventures specializes in small group adventure tours to a host of destinations from Asia to South America and Africa to the Arctic. Nearly half of the travelers on every trip are flying solo, and there’s no single supplement if you choose to bunk with a same-sex roommate. Or, select your own room for a fee.

A Chief Experience Officer leads each group tour and itineraries are searchable by travel style. For example, find wellness-centric trips like nine days of daily yoga, visits to Hindu temples, and partake in traditional healing ceremonies in Bali. Or travel with their partner, National Geographic, for an exclusive guided tour of South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and a visit to Soweto township in Johannesburg, the home of Nelson Mandela.

G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.

Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato

Courtesy of G Adventures

Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.

In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.

Courtesy of Contiki

Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.”

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.

Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates

Courtesy Flash Pack

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.

Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.

Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions

Courtesy of Overseas Adventure Travel

It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).

The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska.

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight.

Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel

Courtesy of Wild Women Expeditions

Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities.

For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.

Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

Best Group Tours in Europe for Solo Travellers

Deciding to whisk yourself off somewhere new is exciting. That said, it can also feel a little daunting, especially if you haven’t travelled without friends or family before.

But don’t worry, we’re here to help you have an empowering experience!

Joining fellow travellers on a guided small group tour is one of the best ways to explore Northern Europe solo. Indeed, travel groups are ideal if you'll be adventuring on your own but want to meet new people.

So where are the best places you can visit in Northern Europe? And are they good for solo travellers?

The epic landscapes and rich cultures that you’ll find in Iceland, Scandinavia, Scotland and Ireland make them some of Northern Europe’s top travel destinations. They also happen to be among the world’s safest destinations – perfect if you’re travelling on your own.

  • Discover expert-led  guided small group tour of Northern Europe
  • Good to know: The countries of  Norway ,  Sweden  and  Denmark  make up the region of Scandinavia

Read on to find out more about the top Northern Europe group tours for solo travellers. Plus, you'll get tips on things to consider when choosing a destination.

Neist Point, Isle of Skye, Scotland

Why is Northern Europe a good place for travelling solo?

When you think of escorted tours, far-flung places and activities – like African safaris and Costa Rican treks – might spring to mind. But if you’re looking for the ultimate solo-friendly destination, then we recommend Northern Europe.

These are just some of the reasons why:

  • The liberal attitude of the locals makes Northern Europe a welcoming place for solo, female and LGBTQ+ visitors
  • English is widely spoken as a first or second language in Iceland, Scandinavia, Scotland and Ireland
  • There are excellent public transport networks, particularly in Scandinavia
  • Iceland and the Scandinavian nations rank among the world’s safest and happiest countries

Plus, with awe-inspiring scenery and plenty of top spots for culture, you’re sure to find something to delight you.

For instance, you could be admiring stunning natural landscapes, including glacier lagoons, towering volcanoes and epic fjords one day. And the next you could be strolling around boutiques, museums and galleries in the region’s vibrant cities.

Why are guided small groups good for solo travellers?

Guided tours, with around 16 travellers, are a great way to experience a destination if you’re exploring solo (and even if you’re not!).

If you opt for a small group tour, you’ll be able to:

  • Benefit from the knowledge of your local guide
  • Get to know the like-minded travellers in your group
  • Sit back and take in the scenery while your guide drives
  • Enjoy a more personal experience than you’d get on a large tour
  • Reach more places in a minibus than you would on a coach

And, if you travel with Nordic Visitor, you can cast aside thoughts of those 18-30 singles travel groups you might have heard of. Because it’s time to embark on an authentic experience, organised by local experts at a trusted tour company.

Not only that but if you’re travelling solo, you’ll get a private room. Having your own single rooms throughout your trip means there’s no need to worry about sharing with someone you don’t know.

Continue reading and you'll discover the best destinations in Northern Europe for solo travellers on a group tour.

1. Iceland

According to the Global Peace Index , the small island nation of Iceland is the safest country in the world. And it has been for the past 12 years! Combine this with the unrivalled scenery you’ll encounter at every turn and you have a top destination for an unforgettable solo trip.

But you don’t need to take our word for it. In fact, Condé Nast Traveler cited a trip around Iceland’s Golden Circle as one of their favourite solo trip ideas.

These are some of the best ways to experience Iceland on a guided group tour:

  • Tour the Golden Circle’s famous sites from Reykjavík on a short break
  • Marvel at South Iceland’s glacier lagoons and black sand beaches
  • Encircle the entire country on an escorted trip around the Ring Road
  • Chase the aurora on a northern lights tour package
  • Head to the beautiful and remote Westfjords, home to Arctic foxes and puffins
  • Check out these small group tours in Iceland and start planning your solo adventure

Vestrahorn, Stokksnes in East Iceland

The Icelandic summer spans June , July and August . Travel at this time and you’ll experience the year’s best weather while making the most of extended daylight hours.

Plus, at the height of summer, you’ll enjoy a phenomenon known as the midnight sun. This is when the sun barely sets, meaning you can soak up your stunning surroundings late into the evening.

Or if you’d like to see popular attractions with fewer visitors around, pick the shoulder season – April , May and September .

As well as being a great time for wildlife watching and seeing the countryside at its most lush, a summer tour is perfect for venturing off the beaten path in Iceland . And with a knowledgeable local guide to lead the way, you can relax as you explore Iceland’s highlights and hidden gems.

  • Get inspired by these summer tours in Iceland

Winter

Winter – October to March – may not seem like the ideal time for embarking on a solo adventure. But by joining a small group tour you can rest easy as your guide takes care of the logistics and does all the driving.

This leaves you free to soak up the beauty of Iceland’s landscapes in winter. Think frosted scenery, frozen waterfalls and snow-dusted peaks.

Iceland's Skogafoss waterfall in winter

Iceland is also quieter at this time of year, so there will be fewer visitors around, even at the must-see attractions. This includes the Golden Circle’s iconic sights: Gullfoss waterfall , Geysir and Þingvellir National Park .

Another bonus of travelling in winter is that you could witness enchanting displays of the aurora borealis. Visit from September to March on an Iceland northern lights tour and you could tick seeing this unforgettable sight off your wish list.

Top tip: check out this guide to seeing the northern lights in Iceland for expert advice on chasing the aurora.

There are some of the other activities you can do on a winter trip to Iceland:

  • Snowmobiling
  • Glacier hiking
  • Photographing the frosty landscapes

By joining a Nordic Visitor group tour you can experience  solo travel in Iceland  year-round. Meanwhile, the following destinations are best enjoyed by solo travellers during the summer months.

2. Scandinavia

The region of Scandinavia is made up of Norway , Sweden and Denmark . These northerly nations are known worldwide for their top sustainability credentials, outdoorsy people and trendy Scandinavian cities .

As well as this, getting around on your own here is pretty straightforward. Why, you ask? Well, most of the locals speak fluent English and the public transport systems are easy to use.

Not only that, but the capital cities of Oslo , Stockholm and Copenhagen are all relatively small and surrounded by beautiful countryside. This makes it easy for you to experience both culture and nature on one trip.

What’s more, Norway, Sweden and Denmark were highlighted as top destinations for solo female travellers by Travel + Leisure .

Copenhagen's Nyhavn Harbour at night

Now it's time to find out what kind of itineraries you can choose from. If you take a small group trip to Scandinavia , you could:

  • Tour the Scandinavian Triangle, made up of Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen
  • Combine your time in Scandinavia with a Baltic cruise and visit nearby Finland
  • Experience the best of Norway’s stylish cities and jaw-dropping fjords

If this sounds tempting, why not delve a little deeper? Check out these things to do on a Scandinavia guided tour:

  • Enjoy city tours with a knowledgeable guide
  • Take the world-renowned Norway in a Nutshell® route
  • Learn about Scandinavian royalty when you visit Rosenburg Castle
  • Cruise Norway’s fjords and gaze in wonder at the country’s striking coastline

3. Norway

So you've already read about why Norway is great for travelling solo, including English-speaking locals and straightforward public transport systems. But we think you’ll thank us for sharing a bit more about what you can experience in this stunning Scandinavian nation.

Visit Norway, and you’ll find that it’s a sparsely populated country brimming with glittering fjords, jagged peaks and mountain plateaus. You’ll also encounter cool, compact cities and plenty of Viking heritage sites.

This means that no matter your interests, there’s almost always a reason to visit Norway.

Trondheim, Norway

Choose one of these  Norway small group trips for solo travellers and you could:

  • Admire tumbling waterfalls and towering mountains as you ride the Flåm railway
  • Uncover highlights and hidden gems in Oslo , Norway’s capital
  • Explore  Bergen and the surrounding UNESCO-listed fjords
  • Stroll through charming Trondheim ’s colourful old town
  • Sail Norway’s breathtaking coastline on a Havila or  Hurtigruten cruise

4. Scotland

Scotland, Britain’s most northerly nation, is known the world over for its heather-clad valleys, ancient castles and fiery single malt whisky. But it’s not all about the vast landscapes, clan history and distilleries.

For instance, you’ll probably also want to spend time exploring its picturesque towns and villages, like St Andrews . And of course, the capital city of Edinburgh , with its cobbled streets and cosmopolitan vibe, is unmissable.

Calton Hill viewpoint in Edinburgh, Scotland

One of the best ways to get the most out of your time here, is by joining a guided small group tour of Scotland .

This way you'll benefit from the expertise and insider knowledge of your local guide. Plus, you’ll be able to sit back and take in the beautiful scenery as you’re driven between stops.

Check out these experiences you could have on a Scotland small group tour:

  • Soak up the capital’s must-see sights, including Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile
  • Head to the iconic Isle of Skye and take a wildlife boat trip on Loch Coruisk
  • Photograph famous Scottish castles, such as  Eilean Donan and Dunnottar
  • Stroll along the shores of Loch Ness and discover the legends that lie beneath
  • Marvel at the dramatic beauty of Glen Coe , where clan history runs deep
  • Visit national parks, like the Trossachs and the Cairngorms
  • Walk Culloden Battlefield and learn about Scotland’s Highland Jacobites
  • Savour a glass (or “dram”) of whisky on a distillery visit or tasting experience

Scotland is also home to one of Europe’s friendliest cities – Glasgow . While the country’s largest city may not have its own castle like the capital, it does have a lot going for it. In fact, it’s packed with free museums and has a thriving music scene.

Indeed, Condé Nast Traveler has declared Glasgow’s eclectic West End a must for foodies. If you’re intrigued, why not add a night or two in Glasgow to your Scottish adventure?

What other ways can I travel solo in Europe?

As you now know, there are plenty of reasons to join a guided tour as a solo traveller. These include benefitting from your guide’s local knowledge and meeting new people.

That said, you might be curious about other, more intrepid, travel options. For instance you could take the wheel on a solo road trip or ride scenic railways between Scandinavia’s top spots.

Of course, not everyone will want to travel on their own without a guide. But if this does sound appealing, you can make discovering Europe on your own easy by travelling with a trusted travel company, like Nordic Visitor.

Why not begin by checking out these Northern European self-drive packages and independent tours of Scandinavia ?

It’s also good to know that if you’re travelling with Nordic Visitor you’ll have access to a 24/7 helpline. So, in the unlikely event that anything unexpected crops up, an on-call travel expert will be available to assist you.

25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You’ll Love

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 04/04/2024

A few years ago there were hardly any single travel groups that offered options for holidays for one – let alone companies who entirely focused on solo departures and looked at things like no single supplements etc and solo travel groups.

Thank goodness for the growth in singles travelling as now there is a good economic reason for companies to look at developing great offers for those looking for holidays for one.

There are now singles travel groups over 30s, single travel for over 50, singles travel getaways, luxury solo travel tours and singles travel getaways galore.

I will let you know which of these tour companies I have traveled with and which I haven’t – if you then go and do a tour on one of the ones I haven’t been on please do let me know what they are like – and I would love you to write a guest post if you’re up for it.

There are so many options for solo traveling today – here are some great trips for single travelers.

1. Group Tours for Solo Travellers

Explore is perhaps one of the best singles travel groups. It is also the company I have been a traveling single with the most so the best place to start! Explore has been running since 1981 so they have loads of experience with running tours.

Explore covers over 100 countries and has a maximum group size of 11 and there is no single supplement if you take a shared room. There is an option to have your own room but that does cost extra. They prioritize working with locals and do a great job finding expert guides.

Around 60% of people who go on Explore trips are traveling on their own and they break down solo vacations into age groups on their website which is really helpful.

My second recommendation for solo travel vacations is G Adventures . They have a wide range of small-group trips designed for the solo traveler. There is no single supplement as long as you are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex. G Adventures also offers single rooms at reasonable prices if that is your preference.

The itineraries for G Adventures trips tend to have more free time than some of the other tour companies in this article. This is great if you are someone that likes to have some time to yourself to relax or explore further but want the support and structure of an organised group trip.

One of the most difficult parts of solo travel can be dinner. Eating on your own can feel lonely and isolating. The tour leader organizes group meals most nights, so if you want company you will almost be able to find it.

If you are traveling alone one of the best ways not to feel like it is to join a group doing some challenge – when I summited Kilimanjaro on an organized solo tour. we were a team from almost the word go. More than half of the trip was traveling solo – some were single, some had partners who didn’t want to go, some like me had someone pull out last minute etc.

It didn’t matter who you had arrived with – what mattered was everyone wanted someone to talk to about whether or not to take Diamox, tips on altitude, share lollies, etc etc.

I have done two travel solo tours with friends – North India and cycling Southern Iceland . Again an activity-based trip can be a great travel for singles option – particularly as you tend to be exhausted every night and eat and sleep.

2. Solo Female Travelers Club

Solo Female Travelers Club is a community of more than 90,000, run by the fantastic travel bloggers Meg and Mar. The heart of the community is their Facebook group, which has some great information and is the perfect way to meet other females interested in traveling solo.

Meg and Mar also run female-only small group tours that range from luxury retreats to adventurous expeditions in some awesome locations.

3. Luxury Single Traveller Vacations

One company I have been particularly keen to try but it just hasn’t worked out on timings and destinations is Flash Pack . I love the tone and feel of their website – it is very much about boutique adventures.

They focus on people in their 30s and 40s and seem to have some great travel groups for solo travelers.

woman poses in front of a temple in bhaktapur nepal

Australian based Travelling Divas also promises boutique hotels and customized trips. I have also been very keen to try Cox and Kings solo holidays .

Cox and Kings have a great reputation as a high-end travel specialist so I am highly confident that the thread count on their sheets will be up to my standards based on how fantastic their hotels look.

These trips though will, of course, be at a premium to some of the other options I have mentioned. But their group travel singles options look terrific.

4. Solo Travel Companies that are specifically for traveling alone

I would highly recommend that you think beyond the country you live in when it comes to solo travel groups. For example, quite a few travel companies based in Australia now run specific holidays for solo travel groups.

Encounter Travels is all about solo travel but not traveling alone as they say.

red sands with a path and shadow of person taking photo in namibia

They also age match so if you are a 35-year-old solo traveler you won’t be in a group of people in their 70s. They do have quite a few trips to various parts of Australia but also a few trips to other places around the world.

Another solo travel company based in Australia is Twos a Crowd . Some UK based companies that specialize in solo travel groups are:

5. Companies that specialise in Adventure

For a more adventurous bent check out    8th-day adventures . They are a London based club that has lots of sporting events and other fun things that are a mix of social and activity.

They also run some group holidays which could be good for the more adventurous solo traveler eg Everest base camp

An interesting-sounding organization is Archaeo Adventures. This female-focused travel company looks at adventures in countries like Morocco and Jordan in small groups. They are about boutique hotels, working with locals, and off-the-beaten-track experiences.

Female-focused hosted adventure trips are also the focus of Living Big which is US-based. Another company specializing in solo travel groups USA is Overseas Adventure Travel , which offers some fantastic-sounding trips for adventurous solo travelers.

Heading to Australia there are Adventurous Women and Another World Adventures.  Another World Adventures curates adventures from different providers. It is a very comprehensive site with loads of options that sound great.

6. Cruises for Solo Travelers

Even cruise ships have gotten on board with the growth in solo travel. Norwegian Cruise Line is the brand most commonly mentioned for having actually built single cabins and apparently there is a dedicated area for solo travelers.

They have several cruise brands – Norwegian Epic, Breakaway, Getaway, and Escape. But ensure you look closely as these can be more family-focused at certain times of the year – check out my top tip 2 below.

Encounter Travel also has loads of information on solo cruise options. They even have a “cabin mates wanted” section where you can potentially find another same-sex solo traveler with whom you can share a cabin.

7. Charity Based Solo Travel Companies

There are a few organisations that run group tours that have some activity/challenge that supports a charity. These can be a great way to find others to travel with and the shared sense of purpose can surely add to the group bond.

Have a look at Global Adventure Challenges and Charity Challenge.

8. Passion-based Solo Travel Tours

An organized trip around an activity you love that is also about solo travel is a fantastic formula to follow. Even if you don’t really bond with anyone on the trip if you have learned more about Italian cooking or photographing sea life it is a well-spent holiday.

Quite a few organizations I have listed above offer planned trips around passions and hobbies. Here are a few others I’ve found:

Frui has some fantastic looking passion-based trips – from photography (a great one for solo travel) to painting to food in some lovely locations. I did a day class with them once in London in photography and they were great.

The Red Sea in Egypt appears to be a very popular solo travel spot – most likely driven by the amount of activity that can be done in the water. There are also numerous diving and/or underwater photography courses in the area.

woman and small hut with tree in namibia

Skyros is a very famous spot in Greece for activity/passion-based trips. They used to have a bit of a self-help bent but now they are very focused on passions like painting, singing, yoga, and learning.

They have two locations in Greece and one on the Isle of Wight for taster weekends. According to their site, 70% of their travelers are between 40 and 60, and most travel solo. This is a great option if you’re looking for singles travel groups over 40.

9. Something Different for Single Travel Groups

In August 2017, I spent a month living life Unsettled in Medellin Colombia, and loved it. Unsettled is a fantastic concept. Essentially it aims to give people the experience of living in a city for a month rather than being a tourist.

It does this because it has about 25-30 people sign up, organizes apartments and coworking space and sets up activities that you can participate in as much or as little as you like.

The other people on the trip are your community, the hosts act as your connection to local life and having an apartment and workspace means it feels more like living.

They choose brilliant locations from Buenos Aires to Cape Town to Barcelona . I highly recommend checking them out.

If you decide to live life Unsettled then use the code “FRIENDSOFUNSETTLED”  and tell them that the Boutique Adventurer sent you for a discount of USD$150 .

Solo Travel Tips

1. mix up your plans.

A great way to travel solo is to mix things up. If you were heading to say Australia you could go and stay in a spa for a few days (a great way to meet people), head to say Sydney on your own and stay at a boutique hotel and use Tinder or join a meetup group.

You could then join an organized tour with someone like Explore, travel with them for a while, and then have some time solo again. Committing to a lengthy organized tour can be a bit much – plus it is hard to find one that covers everything that you want.

I find a mix is optimal – if you feel lonely it is only a few days till you have company, if you’re dying to be on your own again it’s only a few days till that happens. And you may very well meet others traveling alone on your organized section who are keen to have further adventures after the tour.

I have many friends I have met when traveling solo who become travel buddies and loads of other friends of mine are the same.

2. Avoid School Holidays

September is a great time to travel solo. Be careful of all organized tours/cruises etc during any school holiday time, particularly over the summer, as you may end up surrounded by families.

However, school has returned in September, and there are often many deals for solo travelers.

3. Fill Up your Kindle

There is nothing like a good book to keep you company when traveling solo! I keep adding to my list – please email me with more suggestions! [email protected] .

I keep them all in my Amazon shop. And I have just launched a range of e-books aimed at solo travelers! I have an ebook on Solo Travel, my trip to Colombia with Unsettled and Everest Base Camp .

Frequently Asked Questions about Solo Travel

Are there travel companies just for single people.

Flash Pack group adventures - flashpack.com

Yes! There are several travel companies just for single people as well as companies like G Adventures that offer trips designed for single travelers.

What is the best holiday destination for singles?

korea_daegu_yellow-bicycle

In my opinion, rather than focusing on a particular destination singles should look at holidays with a focus or goal like a cycling trip or a trek. This is most likely to bring together like-minded people and provide a common purpose.

Is solo travel lonely?

woman on train platform with suitcase

It can be. The best way to avoid feeling lonely when traveling solo is to join an organised tour. Or if you are on your own look at staying in high-end hostels for some comfort and the chance to meet others. And a good book can transport you from any difficult situation! And don’t forget to check out things like the safest cities in the US to make sure you can relax during your trip.

How do I meet other female solo travelers?

There are several facebook groups for female solo travelers such as Solo Female Travelers (who also organise group trips for solo female travelers). I have also found that going to a spa/yoga retreat can be a good way to meet other female solo travelers.

Great ideas. I have done a lot of solo tour travel as I like the security of a tour when I am on my own. Some other companies:

Contiki is great for the 18-35s, especially when you haven't travelled much before.

My favourite company is G Adventures, no single supplement, but you can pay for your own room and a huge range of tours world wide. They are Canadian based. All ages, very budget and affordable.

Another one very similar to G Adventures but Australian based is Intrepid tours. World wide, budget, no single supplement but also has own room option if you don't want to share.

I have made life long friends on these tours when I was travelling solo. Now we meet up all over the world and do tours together!

Discover Europe Alone: Senior Single Travel

Table of Contents

Senior Single Travel

Are you a senior considering traveling solo in Europe? Great! Europe is an amazing destination for senior single travel, with its diverse range of cultures, landscapes, and experiences to discover. In this article, we will provide you with valuable tips and information to ensure that your travel to Europe is a memorable and enjoyable experience.

Choosing the Perfect Destination

When it comes to choosing the perfect destination for your solo travel adventure, careful consideration is key. As a senior traveler, you want to ensure that the destination you select meets your specific needs and preferences. There are several factors to keep in mind when making this decision, including safety, accessibility, and the availability of support services for seniors.

Senior Support Services

Support services for seniors can greatly enhance your senior single travel experience. Look for destinations that offer services like senior-friendly tours, guided excursions, or information centers with multilingual staff who can assist you with any queries or concerns. These support services can make your journey smoother and more enjoyable, ensuring that you have the necessary resources and guidance along the way.

Travel to Europe

Accessibility is another important factor to consider. Look for destinations that have good transportation networks and facilities catering to the needs of senior travelers. Europe, in general, is well-connected, making it easy to navigate between different cities and towns. Consider the availability of public transportation, including buses, trains, or trams, as well as the presence of senior-friendly amenities such as accessible accommodations and attractions for your senior single travel experience.

Italy , known for its rich history, artistic treasures, and delicious cuisine, is a popular choice among solo senior travelers. Whether you explore the iconic landmarks of Rome, wander through the charming streets of Florence, or relax along the Amalfi Coast, Italy offers a diverse range of experiences that cater to all interests.

France , with its romantic ambiance and exquisite architecture, is another fantastic destination for solo travel. From the bustling streets of Paris to the picturesque villages of Provence, France offers a perfect blend of culture, history, and natural beauty.

Spain , renowned for its vibrant culture, sunny beaches, and welcoming locals, is also an excellent choice for solo seniors. Explore the enchanting city of Barcelona, indulge in the culinary delights of Madrid, or soak up the sun along the beautiful coastlines of Costa del Sol or Costa Brava.

Planning Your Trip

When it comes to planning your single senior travel itinerary to Europe, proper preparation is essential. Planning in advance helps you make the most of your time and ensures a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here are some tips to help you create a well-rounded and memorable itinerary:

Research and Prioritize

Start by researching your destination and identifying the key attractions, landmarks, and activities that interest you the most. Make a list of must-visit places and experiences that align with your travel goals. This will form the foundation of your itinerary.

Determine the duration of your trip and allocate the appropriate amount of time to each destination. Consider the pace at which you prefer to travel – whether you prefer to spend more time in one place or explore multiple destinations within a limited timeframe. It's important to strike a balance between depth and breadth of exploration.

Transportation and Accommodations

Look into transportation options to get you from one place to another. Europe has an extensive transportation network, including trains, buses, and flights. Research the most convenient and efficient modes of transportation for your itinerary, taking into account factors such as cost, travel time, and accessibility.

Book your accommodations in advance. Solo travelers often have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of options, including hotels, hostels, or vacation rentals. Consider factors such as location, safety, and amenities when making your choices. Look for accommodations that are senior-friendly and provide the necessary comfort and convenience.

Local Experiences

To enhance your travel experience, consider participating in local activities and immersing yourself in the culture of each destination. Take walking tours, cooking classes, language lessons, or attend cultural events and festivals. Engaging with locals and fellow travelers can create memorable interactions and add an extra layer of richness to your journey.

While it is important to have a well-planned itinerary, allow for some flexibility. Leave room for spontaneity and take advantage of unexpected opportunities or recommendations from locals or fellow travelers. Sometimes the most memorable experiences happen when you deviate from the planned path.

Rest and Relaxation

Be mindful of incorporating rest days into your itinerary. Solo travel can sometimes be physically and mentally demanding, so it's important to take breaks and allow yourself time to relax and rejuvenate. Spend a day at a spa, enjoy a leisurely walk through a park, or simply unwind in a cozy café.

By planning your itinerary carefully, you can make the most of your solo travel adventure in Europe. From mapping out your route and making reservations for accommodation and transportation to incorporating local experiences and allowing for flexibility, a well-planned itinerary ensures that your trip is well-rounded, enjoyable, and filled with unforgettable moments.

Staying Connected and Safe

Staying connected and ensuring your safety is paramount when embarking on a solo travel trip. While it's exciting to explore unexplored territories, it's essential to maintain communication with your loved ones and have a reliable means of emergency communication.

Before you set off on your solo adventure, make sure to let someone back home know your itinerary. Share details of your travel plans, including the destinations you'll be visiting, the dates of your travel, and the accommodations you've booked. This information will be crucial in case of an emergency or if someone needs to reach you.

Regularly checking in with your designated contact back home is also important. It provides them with peace of mind and ensures that they are aware of your well-being throughout your trip. Establish a regular communication schedule and let them know when to expect to hear from you. This way, they can be reassured that you're safe and sound.

Carry A Mobile Phone

Carrying a mobile phone is highly recommended for staying connected while traveling. Ensure that your phone is compatible with international networks or consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival in your destination country. Having a mobile phone allows you to make calls, send messages, and access the internet, making it easier to communicate with your loved ones and access important information.

In remote areas where cellular coverage may be limited, consider investing in a satellite phone. Satellite phones operate using satellites, ensuring coverage even in areas with no cellular network. Although relatively more expensive than regular mobile phones, they are invaluable during emergencies or when traveling to remote locations. Satellite phones provide a lifeline for communication, allowing you to contact emergency services or loved ones no matter where you are.

Travel Insurance

Additionally, taking out travel insurance is not only important for solo travelers but is especially crucial for seniors embarking on a senior single travel adventure in Europe. As we age, our health becomes more unpredictable, and having the right insurance coverage can offer peace of mind and essential financial protection in case of unexpected events such as illness or injury.

While the hope is always for a smooth and trouble-free trip, it is important to be prepared for the unexpected. Travel insurance offers a safety net, providing you with the necessary support and resources in case of unforeseen circumstances, allowing you to navigate any challenges that may arise during your solo travel adventure with confidence. After all, accidents and illnesses can happen to anyone, regardless of age or travel companions.

Remember, the goal of solo travel is to explore, discover, and create lasting memories. By prioritizing your safety and well-being through travel insurance, you can fully embrace the freedom and independence that solo travel offers, making your European adventure an unforgettable experience.

Embracing the Solo Travel Experience

Traveling solo to Europe as a senior can be an incredibly enriching and rewarding experience. It provides an opportunity for personal growth, self-discovery, and immersing yourself in different cultures. You can explore the majestic historic sites, indulge in culinary delights, and embrace the vibrant atmosphere of each destination.

Creating Meaningful Connections

Solo travel doesn't mean you have to be alone throughout your journey. Engaging with fellow travelers and locals is a fantastic way to create meaningful connections. Participate in group activities, join guided tours, or simply strike up conversations with fellow explorers. By doing so, you may find yourself forming lasting friendships and sharing unforgettable experiences with like-minded individuals.

Unlocking the Hidden Gems

One of the joys of solo travel is the freedom to wander off the beaten path and discover hidden gems. You can embark on unique adventures that cater to your interests and preferences. Whether it's exploring quaint villages, hiking picturesque trails, or visiting lesser-known museums, solo travel allows you to tailor your experiences to your own desires and curiosities.

Cherishing the Memories

As you embark on your senior single travel, take a few moments to reflect on the incredible memories that you will create. Don't neglect to document your experiences through photographs, journals, or even a travel blog. Sharing your journey with others can inspire fellow seniors to embark on their own solo travel adventures.

Senior single travel to Europe is an extraordinary opportunity to explore, discover, and embrace new experiences. By carefully choosing your destination, planning your itinerary, staying connected, and being cautious, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. So pack your bags, embark on your solo travel adventure, and unlock the wonders that Europe has to offer. Bon voyage and happy travels!

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Tajikistan issues temporary travel ban to Russia; 'well-provisioned' Ukrainian troops could see off summer offensive

The foreign office in Tajikistan advises all citizens to "temporarily refrain" from travelling to Russia - while a thinktank says Ukrainian forces will likely be able to prevent Russian advances in an expected summer offensive. Listen to our latest Sky News Daily podcast as you scroll.

Fighting in eastern Ukraine has worsened, with troops falling back to new positions in at least three places along the frontlines, Ukraine's top general has said.

Oleksandr Syrskyi said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app that his troops had taken up new positions west of the villages of Berdychi, Semenivka and Novomykhailivka in order to conserve their forces.

All three villages are in the Donetsk region of Ukraine.

Earlier, we reported that the Russian defence ministry claimed that they had taken the village of Novobakhmutivka which is in the same region.

Led by a 68-year-old commander known as Grandpa, Ukraine's Steppe Wolves unit, is made up of volunteers who are considered too old to fight - but still want to.

Staying behind the front line, the mobile artillery unit use truck-mounted rocket launchers, take orders from field commanders and work with other troops, contributing to the war effort despite lacking official support from the military.

"We... get by thanks to the pension fund," commander Oleksandr Taran said.

The unit also depends on donations, in order to repair faulty rounds and capture weapons from the enemy.

Mr Taran said his unit has been attempting to officially join Ukraine's armed forces to directly receive ammunition - and salaries - but has so far been unsuccessful.

Younger men who have been ruled unfit to fight have also joined Mr Taran's unit.

Estimates by the UK's minister for the armed forces say 450,000 Russian military personnel have been killed or wounded in Ukraine.

Leo Docherty told the UK Defence Journal that in addition to those killed, tens of thousands of people have deserted the Russian military since the start of the war in February 2022.

He said he did not know the number of personnel that were killed serving in Russian private military companies like the Wagner Group.

Turning his attention to estimates on weapons, Mr Docherty said over 10,000 Russian armoured vehicles, including nearly 3,000 main battle tanks, 109 fixed wing aircraft, 136 helicopters, 346 unmanned aerial vehicles, 23 naval vessels of all classes, and over 1,500 artillery systems have been destroyed, abandoned or captured by Ukraine in over two years.

The bodies of two people have been discovered in the Tisa River near Ukraine's border with Romania, Ukraine's state border guard reported.

"Despite the lowering of the water level in the Tisa, it is extremely dangerous to swim across it, especially at night," a statement by the border guard said.

"Sharp stones, roots, tree debris, and the swift and cold stream can pose danger to life and health."

The identities of the individuals are yet to be released.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, a total of 24 people have died trying to cross the river, according to the border guard.

Law enforcement agencies have uncovered nearly 400 criminal networks that help individuals evade military service by helping them flee abroad, according to Andriy Demchenko, a spokesperson for the state border guard service.

Russian troops have taken over the village of Novobakhmutivka in Ukraine's Donetsk region, according to the Interfax news agency - citing Russia's defence ministry.

The village is close to the town of Ocheretyne which has become a focal point for fighting in recent days.

Russian forces are also reported to have repelled a series of counterattacks from the Ukrainians near Chasiv Yar, Interfax reported the ministry saying.

This is another key point in the Donetsk region - lying less than 10km from the occupied city of Bakhmut - where the two sides have clashed repeatedly.

Russia's Immortal Regiment March - which takes place on Victory Day to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany during the Second World War - has been cancelled for the second year in a row.

Due to take place on 9 May, the march usually sees thousands take to the streets with photographs of veterans, the UK's Ministry of Defence said.

But this year the photographs will be displayed in cars and public locations from 1-11 May.

Victory Day parades in five Russian regions will also not go ahead due to security concerns, according to the MoD.

The regions of Bryansk, Pskov, Ryazan, Kursk and Belgorod are all in western Russia and are deemed vulnerable to Ukrainian uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) strikes.

The parade was cancelled last year due to a  UAV attack on the Kremlin .

On 7 May, a few days before the parade was scheduled to take place, the presidential inauguration of Vladimir Putin will be held in Moscow.

The MoD said the event may prompt protests.

Russian officials have this morning threatened the West with a "severe" response if frozen Russian assets are confiscated.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova added Russia would never give up territories seized from Ukraine in exchange for the return of frozen assets.

"Our motherland is not for sale," Ms Zakharova wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

"All Russian assets must remain untouched because otherwise there will be a severe response to Western thievery.

"Many in the West have already understood this. Alas, not everyone."

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov added that there was lots of Western money that could be targeted in countermeasures put in place by Moscow.

What assets have been frozen, and why sieze them now?

Today's comments from the Kremlin are the latest in a back-and-forth between Russia and the West after the US House of Representatives passed a bill allowing the Biden administration to confiscate Russian assets held in American banks and transfer them to Ukraine.

The assets - worth around $300bn - were frozen at the beginning of the war in Ukraine, as were transactions with Russia's central bank and finance ministry.

So far EU countries and the US have held off confiscating the assets for fears it could escalate tensions - or cause other countries like China and Saudi Arabia to fear for their own European assets.

Ukraine is very likely to stabilise the frontlines in the coming months, with the possibility of starting a counteroffensive later this year.

According to analysts from think tank, Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian forces are suffering from widespread tactical failures.

As long as the Russian military continues with these struggles, Ukrainian forces will be able to exploit them, especially with the help of military aid from the US.

If so, a counteroffensive later this year or early next could be possible, the ISW says.

A 57-year-old Russian national has been arrested in connection to the murder of two Ukrainians who died after being stabbed at a German shopping centre.

Upper Bavaria South Police said in a statement yesterday that a 36-year-old Ukrainian man died from his injuries near the Tengelmann Centre in the market town of Murnau, Bavaria.

The second Ukrainian man, 23, died in a nearby hospital later the same evening.

The suspect was arrested at his home, which police said was not far from the crime scene.

It is not clear if the suspect has been charged or not.

The foreign office in Tajikistan has advised all citizens to "temporarily refrain" from travelling to Russia.

The advisory was issued after officials expressed concerns about Tajiks being "unjustifiably" denied entry to Russia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported.

Human rights organisations have also reported rising levels of prejudice against people from Central Asia in Russia after the shooting at a concert hall in Moscow on 22 March.

Islamist terror group Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K) claimed responsibility for the attack in which at least 130 people were killed.

All four of the accused gunmen are from Tajikistan.

Yesterday, a 12th person - also a Tajik citizen - was detained in connection with the attack.

Balkan Extended, 13 Days Tour

  • In-depth Cultural

Balkan Extended, 13 Days

The extended Balkan tour was great. Being in a small group, the schedules were not too regimented and can be tailored according to the needs of the guest. The hotel locations were mostly within the city limits and accesible to most travelers needs such as shopping and dining. Since the tour operator are from the Balkan Peninsula, they have good knowledge and expertise on the region which reflected on their selected places to visit and explore. Although the tour operator is located outside of North America, one should not developed any apprehension about the authenticity of the company as they fulfill almost everything that was described in their brochure and itenirary. Our tour guide who also acted as the driver of the minivan has an excellent knowledge about the history and culture of the Balkan countries that we visited. He is very fluent in the English language.

The Best of Eastern Europe Tour

The Best of Eastern Europe

Excellent tour and with a small group it was easy to get to & enjoy everything. There were a couple of hiccups. More to do with local public transport and out of the hands of our CEO, Jakub. He took everything in stride though and went above and beyond to assist some of the group when they needed it My first group tour and I was pleasantly surprised. G Adventures did a stellar job with this tour and comments from other, who have done other G Adventures’ tours, members of group said they are generally good value

Europe Jewel Tour

Europe Jewel

It was, as expected, a busy, non stop tour to beautiful cities and countryside in Europe. Our guide and driver were a great team and took great care of our group. Highly recommend!

Best of Central Europe Tour

  • Christmas & New Year

Best of Central Europe

To be honest, part of what made the trip fantastic was our group of 12- could not have had a better group to travel with- which is clearly luck, but a piece of our group being so cohesive was Nejca, our guide. She was perfect! Available but not pushy. Laid back, but willing to assert herself to make our experience the best. She made each person in the group feel special and appreciated. Thank you, Nejca! The itinerary was quite good as well. Although there were places I could have stayed for a day longer, I think it’s important to not stay too long and feel like time is wasted on a certain place on the tour. Transportation was efficient and Nejca did a great job getting us to our destinations easily and without rushing. Accommodations were very good- with the exception of Prague. Although our apartment was nice, it was clear that the residents of Prague feel that their space is being taken over by tourists- which is clearly true. I would have preferred to have stayed in a hotel in Prague-honestly, I would have paid more for it. Other than that, cannot day enough good things about the trip! Thank you!!

Romantic Rhine (Southbound) 2024

It was a great tour. There were a few thinks that could have been better. Gentle walking was not gentle and it would have been nice to know before hand that a half hour walk was more like an hour and a half.

Britain and Ireland Delight (Summer, 8 Days)

We had an awesome experience, made possible by our tour director Damian and driver Dave. Damian’s knowledge was exceptional and Dave was an amazing driver.

Essential Britain & Ireland Tour

Essential Britain & Ireland

I’ve just returned from this fabulous tour! I highly recommend it. We had the greatest tour guide and bus driver. The itinerary was fascinating . You read about the itinerary before you go, but the reality of the itinerary far exceeded my expectation! We were blessed with great weather, too. We only had misty rain on two of the 10 days. I would probably change one of the hotels and one if the meals, but of those were fine. Others were just better! The excursions were great. I went on four out six of them. Did our own thing the last night in London. The Park Plaza Westminster Bridge was my favorite hotel and it was strategically located!

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days Tour

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

It was excellent! Our guide Daniel was the best. Daniel made the whole trip fun, stress free and he was very knowledgeable. The accomodation was lovely and very central. The countries we visited were beautiful but having a guide made it 100% better. We ate incredible local foods and had a great experience with a guide local to the Balkans. Couldn’t recommend the tour enough!

Croatia and the Balkans Tour

Croatia and the Balkans

I loved the Croatia and Balkans tour. It was the perfect mix of structured activities and free time. Our G Adventures CEO Adin was amazing. I would’ve liked one more day in Split, though.

Tour from Athens to Belgrade: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

Hey guys it was just perfect! Everything! From organization to beautiful places that we visited. I was all around the world but Albania is something else. Wine, sea, food, local people, history, cities - perfection! The places where we stayed were beautiful and clean and tour guide was lovely, talkative and kind. Recommendation to everybody!

What people love about Europe Tours for Seniors

I can honestly say that this was the best holiday my friend and I had ever experienced. From start to finish, the organisation and communication were excellent, we had a very experienced tour guide, Theo, who showed us this fascinating region of The Balkans, and imparted his knowledge of the culture, history and life in the different regions. He was always very helpful. The places we visited were beautiful, amazing and whoever organised the planning of this tour deserves a 5 star rating too! I would recommend this holiday to anyone who likes to explore different countries: downside - living out of a suitcase, but worthwhile. Thank you TourRadar, we would certainly use you again. Sue and Karla
