Golden Circle & Langjökull Glacier

Our first stop takes us to Thingvellir National Park where the Icelandic parliament was founded over 1000 years ago. At Thingvellir you will see how the earth is ever so slowly pulling apart along the North-America and Eurasian tectonic plates and you will be able to stand where the Viking settlers stood centuries ago to edict national laws. Next, you will visit the Geysir geothermal area in Haukadalur where you can see geysers, hot springs, steam vents and eerie blue algae. Strokkur is one of the largest and most powerful geysers and erupts almost every 5 minutes. The final stop of the Golden Circle takes you to Gullfoss waterfall, which many consider to be the queen of Icelandic waterfalls, as it is both high and mighty and stumbles dramatically in a deep gorge. We then have a lunch break at Gullfoss Café, before trying out our Superjeep vehicles off road: the ride will take you to the highlands, rough terrain and glacier area of Langjökull (Icelandic for "long glacier"), known to be the second largest ice cap in Iceland (953 km2). You will enjoy the landscape from your Superjeep while occasionally stopping next incredible sights. After an off-road ride, we visit by Faxi, a small but beautiful waterfall before driving back to Reykjavik.

We reserve the right to reverse the circle to escape the crowds. Highlights of the Golden Circle & Langjökull Superjeep tour:

  • Thingvellir National Park
  • Walk between continents
  • Viking parliament
  • Strokkur geyser
  • Off-road drive to Langjökull glacier area

The Ultimate Guide to Super Jeeps in Iceland

  • Last Updated: May 21, 2024
  • Viktória Komjáti

Imagine you and your closest companions in a luxurious super jeep, navigating the untamed beauty of Iceland’s volcanic landscapes and pristine glacial rivers. It’s not just a drive; it’s an exhilarating adventure that beckons the intrepid spirit within us all.

What is a “Super Jeep”?

4×4 vehicles, tours by suv vehicles, tours on supertrucks, toyota hilux, land rover defender, toyota land cruiser, nissan patrol, ford excursion, ford econoline, mercedes benz sprinter, get freedom. go anywhere. escape the crowds., get firsthand knowledge from local guides., when and where can you take a super jeep tour, off-road driving is illegal in iceland, what should i wear on a super jeep tour.

For the discerning traveller seeking unparalleled experiences, venturing off the beaten path in Iceland offers an abundance of thrilling opportunities. If you’re looking to elevate your Icelandic journey beyond the ordinary, these formidable 4×4 vehicles provide an exceptional way to explore.

A super jeep tour is your gateway to Iceland’s most awe-inspiring and secluded destinations. Experience the raw, majestic landscapes that few see, and uncover the true essence of this extraordinary island.

These vehicles were born out of necessity. As early as World War I, the U.S. Army sought lightweight and fast all-terrain vehicles. Later, during World War II, they issued a call to car manufacturers for such vehicles. According to soldiers, these vehicles could traverse any terrain and accomplish any task.

While the exact origin of the name “jeep” is unclear, various theories exist. In Iceland, the prevailing belief is that the name originated during World War II when the U.S. Army introduced this general-purpose vehicle. The term “general purpose” or “GP” was slurred into “jeep.” This name was then translated to Icelandic as “jeppi.” When these vehicles were further modified with larger tyres, they became known as “super jeeps.”

Super jeeps are large, highly modified, four-wheel-drive, all-terrain vehicles equipped with massive suspension systems and tyres ranging from 38″ to 46″ in size.

They have become immensely popular in modern tourism worldwide, especially in Iceland. Their modifications enable them to reach places inaccessible to regular four-wheel-drive vehicles. These large jeeps can navigate ice, deep snow, mud, or volcanic sand. They can cross arctic torrents and traverse harsh lava fields to access Iceland’s highlands.

Super jeeps can take you to some of the most remote places in Iceland

The modification of jeeps and trucks is a thriving industry. Iceland is now sharing its extensive knowledge and expertise with other countries facing challenging terrains.

In addition to their enormous tyres, these vehicles feature reshaped bodies to accommodate the larger wheels, extended suspension, and a special lift kit to increase ride height.

The rationale for these modifications is clear: they enable the vehicles to drive over larger obstacles without getting stuck and through deep water crossings without getting wet. They are equipped with 4×4 drive for enhanced traction and an engine-mounted air compressor, which is used to inflate and deflate the tyres to adjust pressure for different terrains.

Furthermore, all super jeeps are equipped with a GPS navigation system, VHF long-range radio intercommunication with private channels, and a snorkel to minimise the risk of water entering the engine’s combustion chambers. They also feature a special front bumper for ice, a shovel, rope, and a winch for freeing stuck vehicles.

What is the difference between 4×4, SUV, Super Jeep and Super Truck vehicles and tours?

If you are new to the world of off-road adventures, you may have seen terms like 4×4, SUV, jeep, super jeep, super truck, and monster truck before and have been left confused. In the following, we will quickly help you learn the meanings and differences between these terms and tours as easily as possible.

Four-wheel drive (also called 4×4 (four by four) or 4WD) refers to any vehicle with four wheels total and four wheels driven. This is rather a general category. It does not mean all four-wheel-drive vehicles are suitable for going off-road, driving in deep snow, or crossing a deep river.

SUV  is the abbreviated term for a sports utility car. This is used to describe any car that looks like a station wagon. SUVs are preferred by people looking for a spacious vehicle. These cars have comfortable interiors and better off-road capabilities to withstand difficult conditions and harder terrains.

Thus, they are ideal for small group tours, family tours, and multi-day tours in Iceland like Golden Circle tours, South Coast tours, or Ring Road tours.

It is important to mention that an SUV is not a true off-road vehicle and must not be driven on rocks or through water deeper than its ground height.

super jeep tour iceland glacier

Jeeps and super jeeps are four-wheel drive vehicles  with 100% off-road capabilities. Modifications are what make the difference between jeeps and super jeeps. By definition, a jeep is not a super jeep if it has tyres smaller than 38” in size. All super jeeps have been adapted for Iceland’s unique geophysical conditions and are equipped with VHF radios, satellite navigation systems, and all the equipment necessary for making the tours across the rugged, unpaved roads, rivers, and deep snow comfortable and safe.

Super Jeep adventures are tours that you will never forget. These tours will take you to lesser-seen parts of the remote areas that only the most powerful cars can enter safely. Travelling in these cars provides privileged access to the areas deep in the centre of the highlands and on the glaciers. If you want to stay away from the crowd and explore Iceland at its best, super jeep excursions could be your best choice.

Super trucks are modified buses that can carry up to 58 passengers. You can call them monster trucks, glacier trucks, or even ultra trucks, as the Japanese call them. These unstoppable glacier vehicles are sturdy and safe enough to cross glacier crevices and climb up icy, snowy hills. The increased capacity of supertrucks allows them to transport larger groups through Iceland’s wonderful landscape.

Which types of cars are most common on the super jeep tours in Iceland?

The Toyota Hilux is often called the Swiss army knife of super jeeps because of its versatility, capability, and low weight. The pickup bed in the back can be used for luggage and equipment storage or to install a camper. It seats up to four passengers and has 38″ tyres and a 2.5L turbo-diesel engine.

You do not have to know anything about off-road cars to recognize the old-school, classic Land Rover Defender. This is a favourite expedition vehicle everywhere, from the Dakar Rally to the Arctic Tundra. It is very popular among Icelandic tour operators and guides. The lightest super jeep of the group, it fits up to six people and is equipped with 38″ tyres and a 2.5L turbo diesel engine.

Toyota Land Cruiser jeeps are versatile and durable cars for difficult terrain. Their great suspension and low weight make them one of the smoothest rides in the super jeep category. They can comfortably fit up to seven people and five adults. They come equipped with 38″ tyres and a 3.0L turbo-diesel engine.

Iceland Super Jeep Tours - Toyota Land Cruiser

These lightweight and reliable cars are great for all conditions and terrain. Nissan Patrols are the most spacious cars in the smaller super jeep category. They seat up to six passengers and are available with 38-44″ tyres and a 3.0L turbo-diesel engine.

Ford Excursions come in different sizes, but they are usually black in Iceland. They have a spacious interior and a lot of room for luggage in the back. Their 38” and 46” tyres will get them through the deep rivers and over the highland roads while maintaining unique comfort on the longer tours. They have all the right equipment to travel through the highlands or glaciers. Leather seating combined with the spacious interior’s comfort makes these of the best cars for any adventure.

A regular Ford Excursion seats a maximum of seven people and comfortably fits five adults plus the driver-guide.

The XL version is extra long and comes with an extra row of seats and two more doors. This makes it one of the most accessible and luxurious of the higher capacity super jeeps. It comfortably fits 10 passengers and has bigger 46″ tyres. Ford Excursions are equipped with 7.3L V8 turbo diesel engines.

Ford Econoline comes in two different sizes. The Econoline 46 has a large passenger capacity but is no less capable in difficult conditions. These jeeps have enough space to take 10 to 14 passengers comfortably. The high roof and comfortable seats make it comfortable to be in while traversing the highlands or travelling on the glaciers. They come equipped with massive 46″ tyres and 3.7L V8 turbo diesel engines.

Mercedes trucks come in three sizes that fit up to 11, 14, and 17 people. This makes them ideal for big families and smaller groups. Their large windows, comfortable seats, and quiet engines make travel comfortable. The largest version is the most affordable and eco-friendly way to travel to the core of Iceland. These cars are equipped with 46″ tyres and 3.0L V6 turbo diesel engines.

Why is a super jeep tour better than a minibus tour or renting a standard 4×4 jeep?

Gazing out the window as your flight lands at Keflavík Airport, you may think, “This trip will be the journey of a lifetime.” Vacation time is always invaluable, but most people do not get enough. Iceland is full of breathtaking scenery and thrilling opportunities for adventure.

Bus tours are a cost-effective way to see the country, but super jeep tours have several advantages over bus or minivan tours. Buses often get overcrowded and easily become uncomfortable for group travel.

Iceland’s most amazing and marvellous sites are located deep within the areas of the central highlands, which are impossible to approach with buses or any standard vehicles. On an adventurous super jeep tour, you can avoid the crowds and visit the most remote locations in the country, where few Icelanders even go.

These modified monster cars are well-equipped to handle Iceland’s rough and wild terrain. This means you can travel to places impassable for buses and even standard 4×4 jeeps. On a super jeep tour, the impossible becomes possible!

A super jeep tour – especially a private one–will allow you to enjoy the wilderness with more freedom and only with those you choose, rather than being stuck on a crowded bus full of strangers. You will receive more personalized attention.

Moreover, there is no strict schedule to abide by. If you like a place and wish to stay longer or take more photos, there is no problem.

The information you receive on the guided super jeep tours is one of the biggest values.

You do not have to listen to the prerecorded audio guide like on many bus tours. You are welcome to ask as many questions as you want. The very experienced local guides will tell you interesting and fun facts and stories about Iceland that you cannot find in guidebooks or on the Internet.

You can sit back with your family and enjoy all the knowledge being shared with you, focus on the beautiful scenery, and enjoy every moment of your travel.

Jeep tours are more family-oriented and more intimate. You will value those moments.

Super jeep excursions can take you to places in the middle of nowhere where you will experience nature’s true power and beauty. These locations are remote and peaceful. They will bring you into intimate contact with the raw nature of Iceland. With modified jeeps, you can travel year-round to almost anywhere, cross glacial rivers, drive in deep snow over glaciers, or climb up to the top of a mountain. The number of options is infinite.

Here are just some of the breathtaking places you can go on a Super Jeep tour:

  • Landmannalaugar Landmannalaugar is a famous area of unique beauty in the heart of the southern highlands. Its volcanic rhyolite mountains create a full spectrum of amazing colour on the mountainside. It has a natural hot spring pool that is quite unique and an ideal bathing place year-round.
  • Thorsmork Thorsmork is an amazing valley in South Iceland surrounded by awe-inspiring mountain ridges. It is located between three stunning glaciers: Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull.
  • Hekla Volcano Mount Hekla is the queen of the Icelandic volcanoes. It is possible to drive to a height of approximately 900 meters above sea level. The view from there is astonishing in all directions.
  • Eyjafjallajökull The country’s sixth-largest glacier is the world-famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which erupted in 2010. You can expect outstanding, dramatic views with surrounding lava rocks and volcanic ash.
  • Langjökull Glacier Langjökull is the second-largest glacier in Iceland. It is impassable by regular cars as the roads can be covered in deep snow, so large modified jeeps are the best option to get to the area safely. Langjökull glacier is a real ice cave paradise as it is the closest glacier to Reykjavík, and it has more ice caves each season. It is also home to the largest man-made ice cave in the world, where you can walk hundreds of meters deep into the glacier.
  • Sólheimajökull Glacier and Ice Caves Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier from Mýrdalsjökull and the southernmost glacier in Iceland. This area is a favourite spot for glacier walks and ice-climbing tours.
  • Winter Northern Lights Tours Watching the northern lights in the beautiful Icelandic wilderness on a super jeep tour is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Northern Lights jeep tours often take you to places normal cars or buses cannot reach to give you a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere. Walking through the snow with the northern lights overhead is a special experience!

A Ford Excursion Super Jeep under the Northern Lights

Of course, super jeeps can also take you to the classic, famous Icelandic destinations, including the South Coast, Golden Circle, Silver Circle, Lake Myvatn, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, the East, or the Westfjords. Visiting these amazing places on a super jeep tour is always fun and certainly a very comfortable and luxurious way of travelling.

It is quite a challenge to access some of these places during the winter even in a standard 4×4 car, but with specially fitted super jeeps you can certainly do it! Iceland is simply gorgeous during the winter.

Off-roading vs. Off-road tours in Iceland

Travellers come to Iceland for its outstanding nature. This pure, pristine natural environment is very fragile. Because it is a sub-arctic environment, the plants and flowers here live under very harsh conditions and take a long time to grow or recover. Moreover, in many areas, the terrain is damp and very soft and therefore cannot bear the weight of cars.

Many visitors expect that going on a super jeep tour means they will be travelling off-road. Off-roading, meaning going off a trail or road and onto the unspoiled terrain, is strictly illegal in Iceland and is met with huge fines. There are plenty of mountain trails available that are only suitable for super jeeps to give you the feeling of driving off-road without damaging Iceland’s fragile nature.

There is a translation problem in Iceland when it comes to advertising jeep tours and off-road driving. Of course, it is possible to go off the common paved main roads to cross a river and do bumpy track driving. Icelanders call this off-road driving for the lack of a better word. But this is only means going off the paved road onto a gravel, ice, or snow trail to cross rivers and glaciers.

For your safety and comfort, it is important to know the kind of shoes and clothing you will need for your tours in Iceland. If you are not planning on spending a lot of time outside, you do not really need extra warmth or protective layers. What you will need to bring depends on what excursions you are doing and the season. The following list will help you decide what items you should pack:

  • Short-sleeved and long-sleeved base layers
  • Wool or fleece mid-layers (Bring an extra warm layer in winter.)
  • Softshell pants or lightweight outdoor pants in summer
  • Insulated pants in winter
  • A rainproof and windproof jacket (Make sure that it is not just water repellent!)
  • A warm, waterproof down jacket or parka in winter
  • Sturdy, waterproof boots
  • A warm hat, gloves, and a scarf
  • A bathing suit and towel
  • Your camera

The most important thing is to dress in layers that you can put on and take off as needed. It is a good idea to bring a small backpack to store extra layers and snacks in with your camera and other items when out exploring.

Wearing comfortable clothes and hiking boots is highly recommended. Avoid wearing sneakers, high-heeled boots, or jeans!

Golden Circle Super Jeep Tour

  • DESCRIPTION

Home / Day Tours / South Iceland / Golden Circle Super Jeep Tour

Experience a thrilling Golden Circle Tour in a 4×4 Super Jeep and visit some of Iceland’s most spectacular natural features such as Gullfoss Waterfall, Þingvellir National Park, Langjökull glacier and more.

You will be picked up by your super jeep driver at your hotel/guesthouse/apartment and the first stop on the way is Þingvellir National Park where the Vikings had their general assembly or ALÞINGI (Althingi), one of the oldest extant parliamentary institutions of the world which dates back to 930 AD. The park has some very interesting geological features as it gives you the opportunity to see the continental drift “in action”.

After enjoying the beautiful scenery, you continue to the geothermal area of Haukadalur valley where you will discover the Great Geysir – the original “Geyser” hot spring, the one that gave a name to every other hot spring in the world. The old Geysir has been dormant for years now but its ever-reliable counterpart, Strokkur, erupts roughly every 8-10 minutes so you are guaranteed to witness this wonder of nature in action.

After exploring the geothermal area, we recommend that you have lunch at the Geysir Center where you will find two restaurants and a variety of gourmet food, made from fresh ingredients. You can also try hot spring baked rye bread if you are interested.

After lunch, the Golden Circle Super Jeep Tour continues with a short drive to the spectacular two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall. Gullfoss is on the Hvítá river which gets its name from the milky white color of the water that comes from Langjökull glacier which is indeed where you will be heading next on the super jeep. After exploring the scenery on the glacier you will head back to Reykjavík. If conditions are favorable, you might rinse the dust of the super jeep by crossing a nearby river for some serious super jeep action before your Golden Circle Super Jeep Tour is over.

This Golden Circle tour from Reykjavík is operated by one of our reliable partners.

Incredible 10-Hour Super Jeep Tour of Langjokull with Snowmobiling & Secret Lagoon

super jeep tour iceland glacier

Description

Explore the icy wilderness of the second-largest glacier in Iceland on this super jeep tour from Reykjavik. Travelers who want to spend hours zooming across the snow on a super jeep and snowmobile, with a relaxing geothermal bath right after, should book this small-group tour today.

Your day begins as you get picked up from your accommodation in Reykjavik early in the morning. The group will ride on a super jeep that can handle the iciest and most rugged Icelandic terrain.

From the capital city, your English-speaking guide, who doubles as your super jeep driver, will take you to the base camp near the ice tongue of the Langjokull glacier. The drive can take around two hours, covering diverse terrain for 67 miles (108 kilometers) in West Iceland.

Once you reach the glacier hut in the base camp, you’ll witness the massive presence of the glacier. As the second-largest glacier in Iceland, Langjokull measures 361 square miles (935 square kilometers). Its name translates to “long glacier” because of its size.

Before beginning your snowmobile tour in Iceland, your experienced guide will provide you with a safety briefing and tips on operating the vehicle. Fortunately, it’s easy to use a snowmobile, so even beginners can join. Glacier gears like a helmet and warm overalls are part of your package.

The incredible experience begins as soon as you dash across the glacier’s snowy plains. Its powdery white snow stretches for miles, allowing your group an uninterrupted snowmobiling adventure. To make the activity more enjoyable, consider increasing your speed while maintaining comfort and safety.

You’ll also stop by for a sightseeing and photo opportunity during the trip. Make sure to take many photos as you can, as the landscapes of glaciers are ever-changing.

After a fantastic ride on the ice, the fun isn’t over yet. A relaxing hot spring bath at a nearby pool awaits you to end your day on a high note.

The super jeep will take you to the countryside, in the charming village of Fludir. The village’s main attraction is the Secret Lagoon, the oldest pool in Iceland, where you’ll experience the famous Icelandic geothermal bath.

While dipping in the natural pool, you’ll enjoy its warm and soothing water that stays at 100 to 104 F (38 to 40 C) throughout the year. In addition, you don’t have to worry about queuing for tickets because this tour includes admission to the Secret Lagoon.

Surrounding the pool are short walking paths through the grass where you can see the stream which feeds the spring, including a small geyser and bubbling hot pools. There’s also a cafe and restaurant where you can enjoy drinks or refreshments.

After a full day of glacier adventure and a relaxing hot spring bath, you’ll return to your hotel in Reykjavik.

Don’t miss the chance to experience a back-to-back glacier adventure atop the Langjokull ice cap on this 10-hour super jeep tour with snowmobiling and Secret Lagoon bathing. Check availability now by choosing a date.

Katla Ice Cave tour, tour to the ice cave under the volcano glacier

About Katla Ice Cave

Katla ice cave is one of the most recently discovered ice caves of Iceland. While most caves are crystal and blue ice cave in Iceland, the Katla ice cave is a ‘black ice’ cave. Also popularly known as “Dragon Glass” ice cave , Katla ice cave is one of a kind. The name “Dragon Glass Ice Cave” became even more popular after its appearance in the popular show Game of Thrones . The appearance is uncanny and the formation process is also somewhat related. The ice cave is located in Katla volcano , one of the most active volcanos in Iceland. A very little amount of light enters these caves and whatever amount manages to get it creates a fabulous combination of colors.

The Katla Ice Cave Tour

The trip will start at Vik which is popular for its black sand beach and basalt columns.  You will be taken on a Super Jeep to the “no man” road. This bumpy road will be traveled in a super jeep which is exhilarating beyond comprehension. The sights are out-of-the-world, much like the highlands, so you will feel like you are getting a sneak peek into the harshest part of the land of ice and fire.

Katla volcano is located underneath the glacier Kötlujökull which is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull glacier . The ice cave is located in the cavity of the volcano. And this is where you will get face to face with the ice cave.

As soon as you arrive at the foot of the glacier, you will be briefed about the necessary equipment that you need to put on before accessing the cave. Your tour guide will make you understand how each piece of equipment works and will help you put it on. After you and the guide have made sure that you are all set with the equipment, you will take a short walk on the glacier to get to the mouth of the “dragon glass” ice cave.

You will be accompanied by your tour guide at all times who will not only supervise your journey but also provide you with various facts about the black ice cave of Katla volcano . While there is a certain type of thrill in visiting an ice cave, taking a walk on a glacier and traveling the bumpiest of roads in a humongous super jeep, the biggest thrill of this trip lies in witnessing one of the rarest and the most eccentric ice caves of Iceland. That too while walking on Iceland’s most active volcano.

If you are a beginner in the game of ice caving then don’t worry. Our expert guides will ensure your safety and train you in the techniques required for your tour.

Most frequent questions and answers

The meeting point for this tour is  inside   the restaurant at the Icelandic Lava Show . To find the exact location and directions you can look up “Icelandic Lava Show” on Google Maps or you can click  here . Your guide will be waiting for you by our Super Jeep with a sign saying with the name of the tour.

Click on “Directions” the map for the exact location and driving directions.

We will see you at our meeting point, 20 minutes before the departure time stated on your ticket. Please note that if you arrive after departure time, your place on the tour can’t be guaranteed or refunded.

Driving time to Vík from Reykjavík is around 2 hours and 30 minutes in good road conditions. If you arrive early, you can stay inside the restaurant which offers free parking and has restrooms.

We encourage bringing hiking boots for glacier tours. They have to be hard on the sole and tight around the ankle. Unfortunately, we don’t have the option to rent hiking boots for the Katla Ice Cave Tour from Vík for the moment.

Weather in Iceland is very unpredictable. For tours during winter: warm clothing as first layer, waterproof jacket with a hoodie, hiking boots with ankle protection and hard sole, a hat and gloves are ideal. For tours during summer, bringing a light rain jacket or a soft shell with a hoodie is in most cases enough protection. Icelanders often say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”. Jeans are not recommended for the tour as they become very heavy, cold and uncomfortable to wear when they get wet.

It rains a lot in Iceland, but we do not let rain stop us from going out and enjoy nature. All we need to do is choose our clothing wisely, which is why we recommend wearing waterproof clothing as the second layer. Of course, safety is our #1 priority. In case of extreme weather conditions, we will cancel our tours and do our best to reschedule. In these cases, you’ll receive a full refund.

This is a personal choice. We have had pregnant women on our glacier hikes and we always recommend you read the description of the activity to get a better idea. In any case, feel free to contact our Service Team for further questions and concerns.
