A subsidiary of the nonprofit family shelter My Father’s House, The Journey: A Learn and Earn thrift store has been in operation for one year.

With My Father’s House’s main goal at heart — to stop the cycle of homelessness and promote independence and opportunity for families to provide for themselves — The Journey has allowed residents of the shelter to gain real-world work experience with support and training.

The impact on the community has been palpable, and The Outlook readers knew The Journey’s work deserved recognition. The Journey was recognized as Best Thrift Shop in The Outlook and Sandy Post Reader’s Choice polling.

Many homeless families have struggled to build work experience and achieve success in job readiness. But with The Journey, the hope is to fill that gap in the community and provide much-needed support to help residents find success and build their skills for a permanent job after their time in the shelter.

The Journey’s general manager, Sara Green, worked for My Father’s House for 13 years prior to joining The Journey program. She has seen firsthand the impact that their work has on their residents and the community at-large.

“I love working with our resident employees and watching them grow and become more confident in themselves,” Green said. “It is also wonderful to get to know our regular customers and all the new ones that come in.”

Currently, The Journey has two resident employees, two program employees, and 12 volunteers, many of whom came from the thrift store Chase Me Again, which partnered with My Father’s House in the past.

“People loved the store Chase Me Again and I feel like this is filling that gap,” Green said. “[Now], people love My Father’s House and are excited that they can support us and our resident employees.”

Green and the rest of The Journey are thankful for the support the community has shown them in such a short span of time.

“I would like to thank the readers and customers who voted for us,” Green said. “To be embraced by the community after only one year in business means so much to all of us.”

My Father’s House currently houses up to 28 families in a state-of-the-art 27,000 square-foot facility in Gresham, Oregon.  Funded solely through private donations, the shelter stands as evidence of a realized vision and community-wide commitment to helping homeless families overcome obstacles to re-establish their independence.

Stepping Stones Transitional Housing

In 2015 we opened our one year transformational housing program! These apartments provide additional housing and educational opportunities for our families who struggle with evictions, property debt and past felony charges.  We now are able to house 40 families at My Father’s House.
