• Men’s Tour of Britain Route Revealed (Stages 5 & 6)

The routes for the final pair of stages of this year’s Men’s Tour of Britain have been announced, to complete the stage details for September’s 20th edition of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race.

Men’s Tour of Britain Route Revealed (Stages 5 & 6)

Stages five and six of the race will see the men’s peloton visit West Northamptonshire for the first time, for a 147-kilometre (91-mile) stage starting out from the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus and finishing on Derngate in Northampton town centre, before concluding a day later on familiar roads in East Suffolk with a 158-kilometre (98.5-mile) leg from Lowestoft to Felixstowe.

Three intermediate sprints, each with time bonuses, on the final leg at Beccles, Aldeburgh, and Grundisburgh, will ensure riders are fighting for the bonus seconds right down to the finish line on Sea Road in Felixstowe.

Commenting on the route announcement, Men’s Tour of Britain Race Director Rod Ellingworth, said: “The penultimate stage of this year’s race is in area new to the Men’s Tour of Britain, which is always exciting as it means that the majority of the peloton will be unfamiliar with the roads that we will be using.”

“With the stage being on a Saturday and its central location, we are expecting a lot of fans to be at the roadside to cheer the riders on. With the start on the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus so close to the finish line in the town centre, it will make for a great location for fans of all ages to come down and see the start and finish of the stage and to make a day out of it.

Looking ahead to the final stage, Ellingworth added: “This year’s final stage of the Men’s Tour of Britain is deceptive, with plenty of challenges to overcome before our 2024 champion can be crowned on Sea Road in Felixstowe. Suffolk has always provided great racing in the Tour, and this year will be no different, with sections along the exposed coastline that will be a real challenge if the wind blows, while the three intermediate sprints will ensure competitive racing thanks to the time bonuses on offer, which could become very important if the overall lead is slender going into the last day.

“Our thanks go to our partners at East Suffolk Council, and in both Lowestoft and Felixstowe, for hosting the final stage of this year’s Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men.”

The stage will get underway at 11:00 from the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus, where a full day of activities and entertainment is planned, including race coverage on big screens, just a short walk away from the town centre finish location.

During the stage riders will tackle the final pair of categorised King of the Mountains climbs of the 2024 race, at Newnham Hill and Bullshill, just south of Daventry, and an intermediate sprint at Holcot, at the eastern end of the Pitsford Water causeway.

Leaving the Waterside Campus the stage heads west from Northampton, through Daventry, and then onto a loop south of the town over the two King of the Mountains climbs and through Abthorpe, Wappenham, Helmdon, Culworth, Byfield and Hellidon, before looping around Northampton via Watford, West Haddon, Naseby, Kelmarsh and Brixworth for the approach to the finish via Sywell and Ecton.

The stage is expected to finish with a sprint in Northampton town centre between 14:23 and 15:05.

While it is the first time that the men’s Tour has come to Northampton, the town’s Derngate hosted the first ever stage finish of the women’s Tour, won by Swedish rider Emma Johansson, in May 2014, and Daventry in West Northamptonshire has twice also hosted the women’s race, with a start in 2017 and a stage finish in 2018, won by Coryn Labecki.

STAGE SIX East Suffolk will hold the final stage of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race on Sunday 8 September for the first time, with a 158-kilometre (98.5-mile) stage between Lowestoft and Felixstowe.

Stage six will get underway at 10:30 from Lowestoft’s Promenade, the first time that the town has hosted the Men’s Tour of Britain, with the stage heading inland via Beccles and Bungay, and then south through Halesworth, Framlingham, and Saxmundham, before racing along the Suffolk coast between Thorpeness and Aldeburgh.

The second half of the route takes in Snape, Wickham Market, Kesgrave, and Martlesham, before a run in and finish on Sea Road in Felixstowe familiar to riders from 12-months ago, when Wout van Aert took a stage win in Suffolk. The stage is expected to finish between 14:08 and 14:53.

The stage will feature three intermediate sprints – each with time bonuses – at Beccles, Aldeburgh, and Grundisburgh, that will help shape the outcome of who follows in the wheel tracks of Wout van Aert as Men’s Tour of Britain champion.

Records During the turbulent history of the race – often with multiple versions during one season –, no rider has been able to pull off three overall victories. Yet, eight did win the Tour of Britain two times: Bill Bradley, Les West, Fedor den Hertog, Yuri Kashirin, Joey McLoughlin, Phil Anderson, Edvald Boasson Hagen and Lars Boom.

Bill Bradley is the only one to have won the Tour of Britain in two consecutive years. In 1959 and 1960 he took the Milk Race, one of the preceding races that ultimately led to the Tour of Britain as it is now known. The Milk Race started in 1958 and lasted for 35 years.

West Northamptonshire stage route announced for Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men

The route for the first ever stage of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men cycle race to take place in West Northamptonshire has today been revealed.

Stage five, the penultimate leg of the 2024 race, will take place on Saturday 7 September, starting from the University of Northampton and finishing at the Guildhall on Northampton’s Derngate after 147 kilometres (91 miles) of racing through the area, including Daventry and nearly 30 villages.

Along the way the race will pass through Daventry, followed by a loop south of the town through villages including Abthorpe, Wappenham, Helmdon, Culworth, Byfield and Hellidon, before looping around Northampton via Watford, West Haddon, Naseby, Kelmarsh and Brixworth for the approach to the finish via Sywell and Ecton.

Teams announced ahead of Men's Tour of Britain which begins in Scottish Borders next month

Eighteen cycling teams from 12 different countries have been announced as they prepare to line-up in the Scottish Borders for the beginning of the Men's Tour of Britain .

Stage one will kickoff with a 113.1 mile route starting and ending in Kelso next month on 3 September 2024. The athletes will compete through Coldstream, Gordon, Melrose, Denholm, Jedburgh, and St Boswells.

More than 100 riders will race through six different stages across Scotland and England marking the 20th edition of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain.

The teams involved in the Men's Tour of Britain include: INEOS Grenadiers, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL, Soudal Quick-Step, Bahrain Victorious, Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale, Groupama-FDJ, Lidl - Trek Future Racing, Norway's Uno-X Mobility, Israel - Premier Tech Team, Q36.5 Pro Cycling, Great Britain national team, Saint Piran, TRINITY Racing, Global 6 United, German REMBE Pro Cycling Team Sauerland squad, the French Van Rysel – Roubaix team, the Portugese Sabgal / Anicolor team and the American Project Echeleon Racing squad.

The tour also includes action-packed racing in the Tees Valley, South Yorkshire, the East Midlands and West Northamptonshire, before finishing in Suffolk on 8 September 2024.

Taylor Swift terrorist threat suspect confessed he intended to kill fans: Officials

A suspect accused of plotting a terrorist attack at Taylor Swift's concerts in Vienna intended to kill "as many people as possible" outside the stadium, according to officials.

The 19-year-old Austrian, who police arrested on Wednesday in connection with the foiled plot targeting a Swift show at Ernst Happel Stadium, had planned an attack on fans involving "bladed weapons as well as the construction of a bomb," according to a press release provided by the Vienna Federal Ministry of the Interior on Thursday.

During a search of the suspect's home, officials found "chemical substances, liquids, explosive and technical devices that could be used to manufacture explosives," said Franz Ruf, director general for public security. Bomb-making instructions and machetes were also found.

"He wanted to carry out an attack in the area outside the stadium, killing as many people as possible using the knives or even using the explosive devices he had made," according to national intelligence head Omar Haijawi-Pirchner.

The suspect, who had recently quit his job and said he had "big plans," swore allegiance to ISIS and fully confessed to the charges against him, officials said.

Police also arrested a 17-year-old who was employed by a facility management company that would have been on duty during Swift's concert, officials said. A 15-year-old was detained and questioned by police, as well. Officials are not searching for any more suspects.

Taylor Swift's London shows not affected by Vienna cancellations, British police say

"There is currently no information that other concerts are subject to an explicit threat," Haijawi-Pirchner said.

British police said they did not believe the planned attack in Vienna would affect Swift's upcoming London shows .

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Swift for comment. The singer has not yet spoken publicly about the situation.

Swift canceled three of her Eras Tour shows in Vienna on Wednesday after news of the planned terrorist attack was revealed. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said Thursday the situation "was serious and remains serious" but that a "tragedy was averted."

"We have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone's safety," Barracuda Music, the promoter for the Austrian shows, said. "All tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days."

Ruf previously said that investigations identified "preparatory actions" and uncovered that the 19-year-old suspect "had a particular focus on the Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna."

Sir Keir Starmer stressed the need to "maintain high alert" for more disorder as he chaired another emergency COBRA meeting. Meanwhile, new polling suggests support for Nigel Farage has plummeted since the unrest began last week.

Our  political correspondent Darren McCaffrey has spotted some interesting polling about Nigel Farage.

According to YouGov, the Reform leader's favourability ratings have fallen since the start of the riots in the UK.

He is viewed unfavourably by every voter group in the UK except Reform backers.

This includes Leave voters - his score with them going from +7 to -4.

The proportion of 2024 Tory voters that have a negative view of him has risen from 52% to 61% - and 47% of the public believe he holds some responsibility for the rioting.

Farage under fire from multiple sides

Darren said: "I think he's trying to strike this balance between trying to lean into some of the causes potentially behind at least the protests, if not the violence, but at the same time trying to condemn them. 

"The question is, can he have his cake and eat it? Can he effectively walk that fine balance?"

Mr Farage questioned the initial police response to the stabbing in Southport, accusing them of withholding information.

The Reform leader has since condemned the violence on the streets - but made allegations of " two-tier policing ", claims which have been denied and criticised by the prime minister and Met Police chief.

Mel Stride, the Tory leadership hopeful, was heavily critical of Mr Farage this morning when speaking to Sky News - and it could be that more Tories come out to attack him.

Sir Keir Starmer has told his ministers and police chiefs they need to "maintain high alert" despite last night's anticipated wave of far-right unrest failing to materialise.

Sky News understands that was the PM's main message from tonight's COBRA meeting - his third of the week.

Sir Keir thanked the police and wider criminal justice system, saying the high levels of policing in key areas last night helped deter rioters - as did the swift sentencing of those convicted so far.

The prime minister has condemned a "deeply concerning" rise in antisemitic incidents in the UK this year.

Charity CST, which is dedicated to protecting Jewish communities, reported almost 2,000 cases in the first half of 2024 - a record high.

There were at least 200 every month - something which had only happened five times prior to October 2023.

That marks the point that Hamas launched its brutal attack on Israel, which was followed by the now 10-month bombardment of Gaza.

Sir Keir Starmer thanked the CST for its work and said: "Jewish people, and all those from faith communities, deserve to feel safe on our streets. 

"We will work together to eradicate discrimination of any kind."

While last night didn't see the unrest many had feared, tonight's COBRA meeting comes ahead of what ministers fear could be days of further protests and disorder.

Sir Keir Starmer has vowed he will not "let up" so far as responding to threats from those bent on violence, and has held talks with police chiefs again this evening to discuss what could happen.

Our crime correspondent Martin Brunt has reported there are fears the new football season kicking off this weekend could spell trouble.

It comes after policing minister Dame Diana Johnson told Sky News earlier that intelligence points to more potential protests.

We've been reporting in the Politics Hub today on the arrest of a Labour councillor over comments he made at one of the counter-protests that took place around the country last night.

First came footage from the event, which appeared to show a man calling for "fascist" rioters to have their throats "cut".

Nigel Farage was among those who shared it, and called on police to arrest the man responsible.

He was named online as Dartford Labour councillor Ricky Jones, and the party moved quickly to suspend him.

We then heard from the Met Police, who said they were urgently investigating the video - and later came an arrest on suspicion of encouraging murder.

Sir Keir Starmer was in the West Midlands earlier before returning to London for tonight's COBRA meeting.

The PM visited a mosque in Solihull, and has just put out a post on X thanking local leaders he met there - and the police - for "keeping our communities safe".

Our team have spotted cabinet ministers leaving the COBRA meeting in the last few minutes, so hopefully we'll get an update on what was discussed from Downing Street before too long.

Metropolitan Police chief Sir Mark Rowley has knocked back claims of "two-tier policing" as "complete nonsense".

He said such claims - pedalled online by Nigel Farage and Elon Musk - put officers dealing with the ongoing riots at risk.

The phrase is used to describe the impression that some protests and demonstrations are dealt with more harshly than others.

What are the origins of 'two-tier' policing?

The term has been used to suggest police are more heavy-handed with people on the right of the political spectrum than the left.

Even before the current rioting in the UK, the idea was propagated by the likes of English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson, actor-turned political activist Laurence Fox, and former ex-minister Robert Jenrick.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage summed up the sentiment when he claimed that "ever since the soft policing of the Black Lives Matter protests, the impression of two-tier policing has become widespread".

'Difference between riot and protest'

However, critics of those who have used the term say there is a clear difference between legal protests and the riots, which has seen mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers attacked, police officers hospitalised, and shops smashed and looted.

One of the strongest rebukes came from Dame Priti Patel, who was home secretary during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations in 2020.

She told Times Radio: "What we saw during the pandemic, we saw protest. We believe in free speech. We saw protests being policed.

"What we're seeing right now is thuggery and disorder and criminality. There is a complete distinction between the two."

What is the law on protests in the UK?

Protest is legal in the UK and the right to freedom of expression is also protected under the European Convention of Human Rights.

However, this only applies to peaceful protest and does not extend to any violence inflicted or damage caused during a protest.

As pointed out by Chris Hobbs, a former Special Branch officer writing for the  Police Oracle website , arrests have been made at pro-Palestinian protests when there has been suspected criminal offences, as has been the case during climate protests and BLM demonstrations.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is banking on the rapid sentencing of convicted rioters putting people off committing more disorder.

There have been more arrests today - not just over the violence we've seen over the past week, but also inaccurate information about the Southport attack shared online.

False claims about the suspect helped ignite the riots.

The unrest of the past week has seen members of the far right target Muslim communities and mosques.

It's reignited calls for the government to adopt an official definition of Islamophobia, with the hope it could help educate sections of the public and clamp down on violence and abuse.

Rishi Sunak's government refused to adopt one, suggesting it could negatively impact freedom of speech, and instead referred to cases of "anti-Muslim hatred".

And it appears the new government won't be quick to adopt one either.

Asked directly on Sky News if it would consider one, communities minister Alex Norris danced around the question.

'Still people out there who want to cause disorder'

"Our focus is on the next few days," he said, adding there'll be "plenty of other things we can look at" when the risk of more unrest has passed.

Mr Norris said while there are "still people out there who want to cause violent disorder", the government's focus is on ensuring police "have the powers they need" and that "swift justice" can be delivered.

We've spotted cabinet ministers and police chiefs arriving for tonight's COBRA meeting in Whitehall.

Met boss Sir Mark Rowley and Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood are among those we've seen.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, will discuss what happened last night and what may still be to come - the government has suggested more protests could be in the offing this week.

Vuelta a Burgos: Jay Vine wins stage 4 time trial

Max Poole moves within 5 seconds of overall leader Sepp Kuss as British rider goes 22 seconds faster than North American

Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) took his first victory since suffering multiple vertebrae fractures at the Itzulia Basque Country crash, winning the rolling 18.5km time trial at the Vuelta a Burgos in northern Spain.

The Australian set a time of 19:51 and stayed in the hot seat as his rivals failed to beat his time. Vine smiled and punched the air when his stage victory was confirmed. He beat Edoardo Affini (Visma-Lease a Bike) by 12 seconds, with Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) by 13 seconds.

The USA’s Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike) finished 15th in a time of 20:34 but just managed to keep the purple race leader’s jersey before Friday’s final hilly stage.

Max Poole (dsm-firmenich PostNL) beat Kuss by 22 seconds and so reduced the gap to Kuss in the general classification to just five seconds. 

Finn Fisher-Black (UAE Team Emirates), now third overall at 34 seconds, moved up from 16th thanks to his superb ride. He was only 16 seconds slower than Vine.

Vine was overjoyed to win again after his traumatic crash in early April.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” he said. “I feel pretty incredible. That’s a really nice performance in my first race back after an injury. I’m really happy with how the legs are going.

"It’s been really long. My wife has been so patient and supportive the entire time. The team was constantly in contact to get me ready to race. Four months ago I was in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit), not far from here actually.  To be on the top step of a stage, a time trial, after what I went through is incredible.

"This isn’t even the most special thing that is happening to me this month. Hopefully my wife gives birth in the next couple of days to my first born, so it’s incredible.”

Vine is not an overall contender at the Vuelta a Burgos and so started earlier than Kuss. He fought into the headwind and then gave it his all in the final part of the course.

“The second part was more rolling and I knew that after the headwind, I had to just I’ve everything I had,”  he explained. "I talked to my coach before the stage and I knew that if I had anything left in my legs, I had to give everything I could."

Kuss tried to stay optimistic after the time trial. Poole is a threat to his overall victory but other factors could go in his favour.

“On paper it should come down to a sprint, but there’s also time bonuses and lots of things can happen, perhaps crosswinds, some short climbs. We’ll see,” he said.
