It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... T-Pain?! Wiscansin University has become the epicenter for an alien outbreak that's spread across the country and T-Pain is here to save the day! T-Pain has announced his Escape From Wiscansin Festival and Escape From Wiscansin: The Invasion live dates via a The Faculty-inspired video.

The tour kicks off with his 2nd Annual Wiscansin Fest on June 10th (the eve of "T-Pain Day" in the state of Wisconsin) at The Rave/Eagles Club in Milwaukee, WI (featuring performances by T-Pain, Chance The Rapper, Tobi Lou, and many more soon to be announced) and will continue to Detroit, Chicago, Denver, Washington, DC, New York, Boston, and Atlanta, with support from Tobi Lou.

Tickets for the tour and festival are on sale April 14 at 10am local time here .

After T-Pain's lyric "Put you in a mansion, somewhere in Wiscansin" from his 2008 hit "Can't Believe It" went viral on Twitter in 2016, the fictitious Wiscansin University was born, complete with its own humorous merch and T-Pain as its dean.

T-Pain named his 2022 tour "The Road to Wiscansin," which culminated in the first annual sold-out Wiscansin Fest in 2022 and saw 400k people tune into the official livestream, featuring performances by artists such as T-Pain, Lil Jon, Hannibal Burress, and more. During T-Pain's performance, state representative Kalan Haywood surprised him with a proclamation from Mayor Cavalier Johnson deeming June 11th "T-Pain Day" to be celebrated annually throughout the state.

This year, flavored water brands Splash Blast® and Splash Fizz® will be presenting partners of the festival. T-Pain partnered with the brand as their first ever Master of Splashermonies for a campaign with an original song and an upcoming Twitch show Splashback, where he will judge up-and-coming artists who will play their new music for him.

T-Pain recently released his highly anticipated, long-awaited covers album On Top Of The Covers via Nappy Boy Entertainment. The album features an eclectic and unexpected mix of reimagined hits that all mean something special to T-Pain, done in his own style and showcasing his stunningly soulful and smooth natural, non-AutoTuned voice which shocked audiences when he won the first season of FOX's The Masked Singer after previously delivering what was then the most-watched NPR Tiny Desk session of all time.

On Top Of The Covers features creative covers of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," Dr. Hook's "Sharing The Night Together," Sam Smith's "Stay With Me," Chris Stapleton's "Tennessee Whiskey," Frank Sinatra's "That's Life" ft. NandoSTL (a Nappy Boy Entertainment artist), and Black Sabbath's "War Pigs," plus an interlude "Skrangs" (in K Major Sus). The album has received praise from NPR, Forbes, NME, XXL, Complex, UPROXX, Stereogum, Consequence, and more.

ABOUT T-PAIN

Since emerging in 2004, six-time GRAMMY Award-winning artist, producer, and songwriter T-Pain (born Faheem Rashad Najm) has not only changed the course of pop, hip-hop, and R&B, but has reshaped the fabric of the culture itself. T-Pain has sold over 50 million singles, accumulated billions of streams, racked up 10 iconic #1s on the Billboard Hot 100, and has sold out shows across multiple continents. The Tallahassee trailblazer's influence transcends generations in music and more; he shines as a Twitch phenomenon and uber popular streamer, label head of his own independent Nappy Boy Entertainment, podcast host, expert drift driver, actor, and author.

T-Pain's voice could be heard loud and clear as "All I Do Is Win" soundtracked President Barack Obama's entry into the White House Correspondents' Dinner, during what was then the most-watched NPR Tiny Desk Concert in the series' history, and when he shocked audiences everywhere as the first winner of FOX's smash hit show The Masked Singer. In June 2022, he hosted his first-ever Wiscansin Festival in Milwaukee, now an annual event acknowledged by the state of Wisconsin.

His Nappy Boy Gaming team is home to a diverse group of gamers including BigCheese KIT, Granny, Lopes, Cardboard Cowboy and Hertlife and together they are taking over the Twitch airwaves. T-Pain builds his own gaming rigs and was among the first to consistently stream on Twitch since 2014.

He launched his Nappy Boy Radio with T-Pain podcast in 2021 in partnership with PodcastOne and since welcomed some amazing guests including Snoop Dogg, Tiffany Haddish, Chance The Rapper, Mike Tyson, Hannibal Burress, and more. Exhibiting a longstanding affinity for drifting, T-Pain created Nappy Boy Automotive as a way to build out his own drifting team and diversify motorsports, and even built his second drift car fully by himself during quarantine. T-Pain is also an actor and author with his literary debut Can I Mix You a Drink? that hit the shelves in September 2021.

SMASHING PUMPKINS ' latest album, "Cyr" , was released in November 2020 via Sumerian Records . The 20-song follow-up to 2018's "Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun." was produced by Corgan . It features founding members Billy Corgan , Jimmy Chamberlin and James Iha , along with longtime guitarist Jeff Schroeder .

Billy told Apple Music about "Cyr" : "I think this is the music that's coming out now is the things that have taken root. We've gone back to just being ourselves. We're good pop assassins, and I think as long as we're sort of in that space, we're good. Anybody can ascribe anything they want to it as far as stylistically, but it bears repeating that what most of the general public knows of the band is really only one small slice of the band's music. The band's sort of width was a lot wider. So this falls quite comfortably in the music that we've made through the years."

the smashing pumpkins, smashing pumpkins, smashing pumpkins rock invasion 2, rock invasion 2, rock invasion tour 2, smashing pumpkins rock invasion, billy corgan, cyr, the smashing pumpkins tour, welcome to rockville, beachlife, summer camp,

The Smashing Pumpkins  will make another attempt at a  Rock Invasion 2  tour in 2022. The alternative rock outfit announced new dates on Tuesday for the tour that was originally slated for spring 2020 .

The new crop of concerts begins on May 2nd in San Antonio, TX. Following a three-night run in Mexico City, MX (5/5–7), The Smashing Pumpkins then return stateside for a show at  Santa Barbara Bowl  in California (5/13) and a set at  BeachLife Festival   in Redondo Beach, CA (5/14). Shows at venues to be announced in Tuscon, AZ and Oklahoma City, OK follow on May 15th and 17th, respectively, followed by a concert at Ozarks Amphitheater  in Camdenton, MO on the 18th.

The Smashing Pumpkins then head down to Daytona Beach, FL for a set at  Welcome to Rockville  (5/19–22) ahead of shows in New Orleans, LA (5/20); Birmingham, AL (5/21); Portsmouth, VA (5/24); Greensboro, NC (5/25); Newport, KY (5/27); and finally Columbus, OH (5/28). When the tour was initially announced in March 2020 , frontman Billy Corgan  noted that the shows on this tour will be more rock-based than previous performances, coinciding with a return to the band’s rougher, early-1990s style. The previous Rock Invasion  tour was in promotion of the band’s 1993 breakout album,  Siamese Dream , which has since gone platinum four times over.

“It’s been a good while since we’ve played a straight-up, bare-knuckle rock and roll show — one that avoids little in the way of raw power,” Corgan said at the time. “So note: this tour won’t be for those faint of heart and will certainly echo the dynamic modes in which we built our live reputation.”

Tickets for The Smashing Pumpkins’ new  Rock Invasion 2  tour dates go on sale on Friday at 10 a.m. local time. A presale launches on Wednesday at 10 a.m. local time. Scroll down for a full list of tour dates.

They’re also scheduled to play Memphis’ Beale Street Music Festival and Welcome to Rockville in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Tickets go on sale Friday, February 25th at 10:00 a.m. local time, with pre-sale launching on Wednesday, February 23rd. Get your passes here , and find the complete “Rock Invasion 2 Tour” schedule — plus Smashing Pumpkins’ upcoming festival appearances — below.

The Smashing Pumpkins announce Rock Invasion 2 U.S. tour dates

The Smashing Pumpkins announce Rock Invasion 2 U.S. tour dates

The Smashing Pumpkins have announced details of an 11-date U.S. tour, with several big festival stops in between.

Billy Corgan and co. will be hitting the road with Bones for the Rock Invasion 2 Tour, which kicks off in San Antonio on May 2, and finishes up in Columbus on May 28.

It's been quite a while now since the band updated fans on their planned follow-up to 1995’s Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness double-album . Last July, guitarist Jeff Schroeder revealed that, “We’re about halfway through working on another big album, which is, basically, I guess, a sequel to Mellon Collie… and Machina. So it’s the third in a trilogy, more of a concept-based album. And this one is 33 songs.

“We’ve been working for basically the whole year on it,” he continued. “But we’re in the middle of real tracking and stuff right now. James [Iha, guitar] and I are working out here in LA. Drums are basically done, so Jimmy’s [Chamberlin, drums] done his part. But Billy is working in Chicago, and I’m out here in LA, and James is in LA, so we’re ploughing through it. That’ll probably take most of the rest of the year – it’s a big, sprawling thing.”

Released in 2020, Haken’s most recent album ‘Virus’ is the culmination of a musical thought experiment which started with 2018’s ‘Vector’.  Ross Jennings explains, “whilst ‘Virus’ can absolutely be enjoyed as a stand-alone work, it is thematically and conceptually linked with ‘Vector’, so our intention is to perform both albums back-to-back for a special performance someday”.

Imagine Dragons’ sixth studio album LOOM represents the pinnacle of their artistic journey of self-discovery and marks the best body of work they’ve ever made. LOOM , produced entirely by Imagine Dragons and their longtime collaborators Mattman and Robin, finds the perfect balance between the classic sounds that have made them superstars and the freshness that brought them joy in the studio. Featuring 9 brand new tracks including hit single “Eyes Closed”, LOOM signifies new beginnings on the horizon – the excitement for a new day, moments yet to come.

Last year, the members of Imagine Dragons found themselves with a rare and well-deserved break from the road—perhaps their longest in many years. So, they made the most of it by devoting that time to family and friends. Catalyzed by this respite with a refreshed perspective, the band rallied together in the studio and mined the same well of inspiration that fed their most beloved material. The musicians reflected on the past in order to catapult into a future where stylistic boundaries have disappeared entirely and anything is possible creatively. This journey has brought them to their most dynamic and definitive body of work to date, LOOM .

To herald LOOM , the band recently shared their soaring new anthem entitled “Eyes Closed.” Check out the video HERE . The track illuminates their penchant for boundary-breaking. Stretching the limits of the soundscape almost to the breaking point, they harness a burst of energy with a rafter-reaching refrain primed to soar on the upcoming summer tour.

It’s the year of the Dragons …

ABOUT IMAGINE DRAGONS:

Imagine Dragons continue to redefine rock in the 21 st century. Filling stadiums, crafting cloud-rattling anthems, and breaking records at every turn, diamond-certified GRAMMY® Award-winning Las Vegas quartet Imagine Dragons occupy rarified air as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Tallying cumulative sales of 74 million album equivalents, 65 million digital songs, and over 160 billion streams, they stand out as “the only band in history to earn four RIAA Diamond singles , ” namely “Radioactive” (16x-platinum), “Believer” (13x-platinum), “Thunder” (12x-platinum) and “Demons” (11x-platinum). Since emerging in 2009, they’ve scored five consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with Night Visions [2012] (7x-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Smoke+Mirrors [2015] (platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Evolve [2017] (triple-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Origins [2018] (platinum)(KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), and Mercury – Act 1 [2021]( KIDinaKORNER/Interscope). With the release of Mercury – Act 2 (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope) in 2022, they completed their first double-album opus produced by the legendary Rick Rubin. The hit single “Bones,” featured on Mercury Act 2, went to number one at Alternative Radio and remains in the Global Top 50 on Spotify. The band’s hit collaboration with East Atlanta-based rapper J.I.D, “Enemy,” has racked up billions of global streams and landed at #6 on the IFPI Global Singles Chart for 2022. Dominating radio, they remain one of only four bands to ever achieve consecutive Top 5 singles at Alternative radio, and the only band to repeat this feat. Most recently, Imagine Dragons made history on Spotify, as “Bad Liar” became their 10th song to surpass 1 billion streams. The band now holds the crown for the group with most billion-plus streamed songs, becoming the first in the platform’s history to have ten songs reach this milestone. Meanwhile, Imagine Dragons’ music videos for hits “Thunder” and “Believer” have garnered an astounding 2 billion YouTube views, while videos for “Radioactive” and “Demons” have surpassed over 1 billion views.  They’ve collaborated with everyone from Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, and Wiz Khalifa to Avicii and film composer Hans Zimmer. Giving back, they’ve raised millions for various causes, including their pediatric cancer charity the Tyler Robinson Foundation, and frontman Dan Reynolds’ LOVELOUD Foundation and festival in support of LGBTQ+ youth. In 2022, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky named them ambassadors for UNITED 24, which benefits humanitarian aid in Ukraine. Imagine Dragons earned an impressive four nominations for the 2022 American Music Awards including “Favorite Pop Duo or Group,” “Favorite Rock Artist,” “Favorite Rock Album” and “Favorite Rock Song.” The band was also nominated for “Group of 2022” for the 2022 People’s Choice Awards. Most recently, they received an MTV VMA nomination for “Video For Good” for their acclaimed “Crushed” music video.

Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round at the Madrid Open after his victory over Alex de Minaur on Saturday.

Rafael Nadal Nets First Top 20 Win Since 2022 With Victory at Madrid Open

  • Author: Tim Capurso

Rafael Nadal defeated world No. 11 Alex de Minaur 7–6 (6), 6–3 in the second round of the Madrid Open on Saturday, earning his first ATP Tour victory vs. an opponent ranked inside the top 20 since November of 2022.

Nadal, 37, at times showed flashes of the form that helped him win 22 Grand Slams in his career. The Spaniard had his signature, lefty forehand-down-the-line shot working well, in addition to his crosscourt backhand, which he fired for winners multiple times.

Nadal, with a raucous crowd behind him, won a thrilling, 77-minute first set in a tiebreak, then quickly broke de Minaur's serve to grab a second set lead he would not relinquish.

When told during a post-match interview that it seemed like "the old Rafa Nadal was back," Nadal pushed back on the notion.

Are we beginning to see the return of the old Rafael Nadal? 🤩 @RafaelNadal #MMOPEN pic.twitter.com/cKrwHWYYmN — Tennis TV (@TennisTV) April 27, 2024

"No, no, no not yet," Nadal said with a laugh. "It needs time, and I think for moments have been good level of tennis. I was able to do positive things but still on and off."

Nadal missed nearly the entire 2023 season after requiring surgery on his hip, an injury that had the decorated tennis pro pondering retirement going into 2024. On Wednesday, Nadal would not fully commit to playing in the French Open, a tournament he has won a record 14 times.

If he can maintain the form he displayed Saturday while staying healthy, it's likely he'll be on the court at Roland Garros when the French Open begins on May 20.

Imagine Dragons announce 2024 ‘Loom’ tour. Get tickets today

You won’t have to imagine an Imagine Dragons tour this year.

The “Radioactive” rockers just announced a nationwide tour in support of their upcoming seventh studio album “Loom.”

Starting in late July, the high-octane trio will kick off the run with back-to-back stops at Camden, NJ’s Freedom Mortgage Pavilion on Tuesday, July 30, Wantagh, NY’s Jones Beach Theater on Friday, Aug. 2 and Holmdel, NJ’s PNC Bank Arts Center on Sunday, Aug. 4.

While fans will likely hear cuts from their sizable stable of hits — as well as tracks from the new record which is due out June 28 — the band wants their audience to attend shows for the communal experience.

“It’s just a lot of people in a room together realizing they’re not alone in their feelings,” lead singer Dan Reynolds told AP News . “I don’t necessarily need them to feel happy or sad or anything. I just want them to look around them and see that other people are also feeling something.”

If that sounds like the spiritual show for you, tickets are available for all upcoming Imagine Dragons concerts as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 26, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Most recently, Imagine Dragons headlined at Dallas, TX’s South Side Ballroom on April 13, 2024.

Here’s what they performed that night, courtesy of Set List FM :

01.) “Believer”

02.) “It’s Time”

03.) “Thunder”

04.) “Birds”

05.) “Follow You”

06.) “Shots”

07.) “Natural”

08.) “Whatever It Takes”

09.) “Sharks”

10.) “Enemy”

11.) “Bad Liar”

12.) “Demons”

13.) “On Top of the World”

14.) “Bones”

15.) “Eyes Closed”

16.) “Walking the Wire”

17.) “Radioactive”

Ahead of the album release, Imagine Dragons dropped the quirky single “Eyes Closed,” which walks the line between rock and Hip-Hop, effortlessly switching between the genres, verse by verse.

For our money, the brooding three-minute track fits squarely into the band’s catalog of sonically adventurous anthems.

Sound like the jam for you?

You can check out “Eyes Closed” here .

For those about to rock, we salute you.

We also want to recommend a few shows if you don’t mind.

In addition to Imagine Dragons, here are just five more iconic acts you won’t want to miss live these next few months.

US growth slowed sharply last quarter to 1.6% pace, reflecting an economy pressured by high rates

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s economy slowed sharply last quarter to a 1.6% annual pace in the face of high interest rates, but consumers — the main driver of economic growth — kept spending at a solid pace.

Thursday’s report from the Commerce Department said the gross domestic product — the economy’s total output of goods and services — decelerated in the January-March quarter from its brisk 3.4% growth rate in the final three months of 2023.

A surge in imports, which are subtracted from GDP, reduced first-quarter growth by nearly 1 percentage point. Growth was also held back by businesses reducing their inventories. Both those categories tend to fluctuate sharply from quarter to quarter.

By contrast, the core components of the economy still appear sturdy. Along with households, businesses helped drive the economy last quarter with a strong pace of investment.

The import and inventory numbers can be volatile, so “there is still a lot of positive underlying momentum,’' said Paul Ashworth, chief North America economist at Capital Economics.

The economy, though, is still creating price pressures, a continuing source of concern for the Federal Reserve. A measure of inflation in Friday’s report accelerated to a 3.4% annual rate from January through March, up from 1.8% in the last three months of 2023 and the biggest increase in a year. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core inflation rose at a 3.7% rate, up from 2% in fourth-quarter 2023.

Jamie Dimon, CEO and chairman of JPMorgan Chase, center, attends the ribbon-cutting ceremony during the community branch opening in the Bronx borough of New York, on Friday, April 26, 2024. Dimon says he’s hopeful the Federal Reserve can bring down inflation without causing a recession but wouldn’t rule out more troubling possibilities, such as stagflation. (AP Photo/Andres Kudacki)

From January through March, consumer spending rose at a 2.5% annual rate, a solid pace though down from a rate of more than 3% in each of the previous two quarters. Americans’ spending on services — everything from movie tickets and restaurant meals to airline fares and doctors’ visits — rose 4%, the fastest such pace since mid-2021.

But they cut back spending on goods such as appliances and furniture. Spending on that category fell 0.1%, the first such drop since the summer of 2022.

Gregory Daco, chief economist at the tax and consulting firm EY, noted that the underlying economy looks solid, though it’s slowing from last year’s unexpectedly fast pace. The rise in imports that accounted for much of the drop in first-quarter growth, he noted, is “a sign of solid demand” by American consumers for foreign goods.

Still, Daco said that the economy’s “momentum is cooling.”

“It’s unlikely to be a major retrenchment,” he said, “but we are likely to see cooler economic momentum as a result of consumers exercising more scrutiny with their outlays.’’

The state of the U.S. economy has seized Americans’ attention as the election season has intensified. Although inflation has slowed sharply from a peak of 9.1% in 2022, prices remain well above their pre-pandemic levels.

Republican critics of President Joe Biden have sought to pin responsibility for high prices on Biden and use it as a cudgel to derail his re-election bid. And polls show that despite the healthy job market, a near-record-high stock market and the sharp pullback in inflation, many Americans still hold dim views of Biden’s handling of the economy.

Last quarter’s GDP snapped a streak of six straight quarters of at least 2% annual growth. The 1.6% rate of expansion was also the slowest since the economy actually shrank in the first and second quarters of 2022.

The economy’s gradual slowdown reflects, in large part, the much higher borrowing rates for home and auto loans, credit cards and many business loans that have resulted from the 11 interest rate hikes the Fed imposed in its drive to tame inflation.

Even so, the United States has continued to outpace the rest of the world’s advanced economies. The International Monetary Fund has projected that the world’s largest economy will grow 2.7% for all of 2024 , up from 2.5% last year and more than double the growth the IMF expects this year for Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Businesses have been pouring money into factories, warehouses and other buildings, encouraged by federal incentives to manufacture computer chips and green technology in the United States. On the other hand, their spending on equipment has been weak. And as imports outpace exports, international trade is also thought to have been a drag on the economy’s first-quarter growth.

Kristalina Georgieva, the IMF’s managing director, cautioned last week that the “flipside″ of strong U.S. economic growth was that it was ”taking longer than expected” for inflation to reach the Fed’s 2% target, although price pressures have sharply slowed from their mid-2022 peak.

Inflation flared up in the spring of 2021 as the economy rebounded with unexpected speed from the COVID-19 recession, causing severe supply shortages. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 made things significantly worse by inflating prices for the energy and grains the world depends on.

The Fed responded by aggressively raising its benchmark rate between March 2022 and July 2023. Despite widespread predictions of a recession, the economy has proved unexpectedly durable . Hiring so far this year is even stronger than it was in 2023. And unemployment has remained below 4% for 26 straight months , the longest such streak since the 1960s.

Inflation, the main source of Americans’ discontent about the economy, has slowed from 9.1% in June 2022 to 3.5%. But progress has stalled lately .

Though the Fed’s policymakers signaled last month that they expect to cut rates three times this year, they have lately signaled that they’re in no hurry to reduce rates in the face of continued inflationary pressure. Now, a majority of Wall Street traders don’t expect them to start until the Fed’s September meeting, according to the CME FedWatch tool.

Working at the invasion front: Carp in the Red River

A lovely river with a rock bank on both sides. In the background the trees are various vibrant fall colors.

Invasive carp have taken the Mississippi River basin by storm since their escapement from farm ponds in the 1970s, where they were originally introduced to control vegetation and phytoplankton, and improve water quality. Like many successful invasive species invasive species An invasive species is any plant or animal that has spread or been introduced into a new area where they are, or could, cause harm to the environment, economy, or human, animal, or plant health. Their unwelcome presence can destroy ecosystems and cost millions of dollars. Learn more about invasive species , silver, bighead, grass, and black carp are notorious for their hardiness, prolific nature, impressive dispersal abilities, and competitive edge against native species. Bigheaded carp (silver and bighead carp) in particular, are extremely efficient planktivores capable of inducing an ecosystem collapse, as plankton serve as a primary food source for all larval fishes, many macroinvertebrates, and adult planktivores like the American paddlefish and clupeids. As researchers have scrambled to characterize the life history, limiting factors, and behavior of these fishes in non-native waters, invasive carp continue to upset the literature and further expand their range and extent.

For nearly two decades, exhaustive studies and experimental control efforts have continued in the northern half of the Mississippi River basin, where infamous hordes of leaping silver carp have earned the center stage for fisheries agencies. In recent years, however, an influx of resources have been allocated to the invasion front: the southern sub-basins. Here, all four species have persisted largely under the radar in low densities, slowly expanding their numbers and scope. With the goal of developing proactive strategies for preventing further dispersal and managing populations, state and federal agencies, conservation groups, universities, commercial and recreational fishermen, and other stakeholders joined forces to begin the evaluation phase for invasive carp in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri.

About 80 miles north-northeast of Dallas at the Texas-Oklahoma border lies the Denison Dam which forms Lake Texoma, which boasts a renowned recreational striped bass fishery attracting millions of anglers annually. If you look just below the dam though, you’ll see the unremarkable Red River as it flows through vastly untamed timber forests, multi-generational hay farms and cattle ranches, and towns you won’t find on a map. This section of the river is characterized by its extreme hydrological fluctuations from the dam, sandy reaches, inaccessibility, and nearly non-navigable nature.

It is here that the Oklahoma Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (OKFWCO) staff began their battle against invasive carp as part of a multi-agency effort. At the inception of their newfound invasive carp work in 2020, the presence of adult bighead and silver carp on the Red River below the Denison Dam in Texas and Oklahoma was known; however, no population demographics, distribution, or abundance information was available. Where did these adult fish originate from? Are these fish spawning below the dam, in small tributaries, or are they even spawning at all? How many are present in the system? Finding accurate answers quickly is vital to the development of effective management strategies.

To determine whether invasive carp are successfully spawning on the Red River below the Denison Dam, OKFWCO biologists have spent the past two spring/summer seasons sampling for the presence of invasive carp larvae. To target eggs and freshly hatched larvae drifting in the river’s current, ichthyoplankton nets with a fine mesh were deployed on each side of the boat at varying depths as the vessel is faced upstream. LED light traps—often used to capture small phototactic fishes and invertebrates—were also set in tandem with one sampling the surface of the water and the other a foot or more below the surface. These traps are an excellent method for catching later-stage larval and juvenile fishes that are more mobile.

Oklahoma FWCO biologists spent the 2022 field season sampling sections of the Red River, spanning approximately 130 unforgiving river miles of the Red River and its tributaries. In total, one hundred fifty-three samples were collected. When a sample was collected, it was stored in 95% non-denatured ethanol which was drained and replaced within 24-hours. Three 1-mL aliquots of ethanol were collected from each sample to be tested for invasive carp genetic material, similar to an eDNA sample. This will allow biologists to prioritize which samples are processed first to streamline sample identification. This extra step is a necessity, as the OKFWCO office contains only three staff members and larval fish identification is extremely time consuming.

Another method for answering spawning related questions is to do necropsies on adult invasive carp that are donated by anglers. When we get these fish, we take general morphometric measurements, extract otoliths, and collect and enumerate eggs from females. These data will inform us of the demographics of this population of invasive carp as well as the reproductive stage of the fish throughout the year.

What's it like to flee your homeland? A 'refugee camp' in Sydney shows you

A man wearing a black hoodie and a bandana hiding most of his face stands by a gate with a sign that says Border Checkpoint

"You have one minute to leave your home. What five things will you bring?"

Common sense goes out the window, as I quickly calculate my list: husband, passport, family photos, medications, mobile phone and charger.

Before I can second-guess myself, we're ushered from the room.

Outside, a towering figure awaits. He stands in front of a metal fence — the sole passage to safety.

"Yallah! Yallah!" the man yells, wielding a piece of wood as though it is a weapon.

Throw a wire fence we can say a border guard "checking" the papers of a student who has come to Refugee Camp in my Neighbourhoo

None of us speak his language but, instinctively, we form a line and offer up our possessions.

There are murmurs, gasps and tiny squeals as he makes his way down the queue.

The lucky ones pass through the border crossing, the others are sent to the back.

The border guard looks at me — cashless, useless — before pointing at my engagement and wedding rings. I don't want to remove them, but what choice do I have?

This is the price for the promise of a better life.

Walking in their shoes

I wasn't standing in a war zone, but rather Western Sydney, as part of Refugee Camp In My Neighbourhood (RCIMN).

It's an interactive tour that's led by refugees and asylum seekers who want Australians to walk in their shoes.

Primary school students wearing orange life jackets.

They transform into tour guides and assume roles like 'border guard', sharing their own experiences along the way.

Hundreds of visitors take the tour each year. The majority are school students, health professionals, and people who work with refugees.

In the simulated journey, you experience what it's like to flee your homeland, take a life-threatening boat trip, and be thrust into a detention centre where names are replaced by numbers.

There's also a taste of refugee camp life: squat toilets, scant food provisions, and a hospital tent with barely any medical supplies.

Project coordinator Adama Kamara dreamed up the project more than a decade ago, when she was working at Auburn City Council. The area had one of the highest populations of asylum seekers in Australia.

It was a time, Adama says, when the portrayal of refugees "was not very positive".

Adama stares off distance, the refugee camp in the background

"It was getting worse and worse," she recalls. "In our community, people were really angry about that, to the point where [some] people didn't want to be identified as a refugee.

"To me, it's a sign of resilience, that [refugee] experience, but people were worried about how they would be treated."

For Adama, the community's story was akin to her own.

She was born in Sierra Leone, but moved with her family to Australia for her father's university study.

In 1991, civil war broke out in her homeland. It lasted over a decade, and forced more than 450,000 Sierra Leonean refugees to leave the country.

"It also meant that my family wasn't able to return home," Adama explains. "We sought safety here in Australia."

Waking up to war

War is what brought many of the tour guides to Australia's shores.

They've fled different lands — Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine, Sudan and Sri Lanka are among them — and found different ways to get here.

Some spent years in refugee camps, others were detained in immigration detention for equally long stretches of time.

Ukrainian refugee Oleksandra's story was different.

Oleksandra leans again a brick wall and smiles at the camera

On February 23, 2022, she had a magical night at the ballet.

"Me and my friends went to the state opera house [in Odesa]," she recalls. "[There] was an amazing performance of the Nutcracker.

"I remember all these costumes, decorations, everything so bright, a lot of diamonds. [It was] so beautiful."

The next morning, the Ukrainian woke up to war.

"The first four days I was in shock," Oleksandra recalls.

"I thought that our presidents will talk with each other and then tomorrow, or maybe a few hours later … I will see news on the TV, [saying] 'That was just an accident, sorry. Everything is over.'"

But there wasn't a retraction or a military backdown. Instead, the fighting escalated.

After those four days, Oleksandra says it sunk in.

"Life stopped. Everything became dull, grey," she says.

"You don't know what to do."

The realities of a refugee camp

There's no rule book for being a refugee.

I went on a RCIMN tour twice — first with a group of year 5 and 6 students, then with teens in year 9 and 10.

Both days, I was struck by the impossible decisions asylum seekers must make.

For instance, sheltering in a refugee camp might seem like the safe option.

But as an Iraqi-born guide named Kathreen tells our group, people without proper identification or money to pay for translators can spend years waiting to be processed.

And the facilities within camps are often hotbeds of disease.

On the tour with the primary school kids, a Sri Lankan guide named Neeraja shows us what a pit toilet looks like.

"Imagine 600 people line up, and going again and again," she says. "How the smell is terrible."

All of our noses wrinkle on cue.

The stench isn't the worst part, of course.

Two photos: one of rubbish and a food ration box and another of a group of used juice bottles

Neeraja, who herself lived in an Indian refugee camp, explains that malaria and diarrhoeal diseases often spread from shared toilets.

According to UNHCR, these diseases along with measles, acute respiratory infections and malnutrition are major causes of morbidity and mortality among refugees.

After our toilet stop, we're led into the medical tent and introduced to Ahmed, a Sudanese man who spent 7.5 years at a refugee camp in Egypt.

Instead of beds, there are camp-style stretchers with mosquito nets overhead.

One stretcher has a hole cut through it and a bucket underneath. This is for patients with diarrhoea, Ahmed explains.

Despite its shortcomings, Ahmed says this medical centre is "much better" than the one he had access to.

"Too many people [are] honestly dying in a refugee camps," he says. "Especially the kids, especially when the mum is delivering the baby."

Ahmed sits at a messy desk inside a big canvas tent

Unfortunately for Ahmed, these harsh realities can't simply be forgotten.

In 2023, war broke out in Sudan, forcing 8.6 million people, according to the UNHCR, to leave their homes. Among them, were Ahmed's wife, daughter, father and siblings.

"They're in a refugee camp right now," he told me .

"It's not safe to be there, but we don't have any options in our country."

Ahmed is an Australian citizen and hopes his family can be brought here. For now, all he can do is wait.

Living in limbo

Waiting is an experience that Asad knows well.

After fleeing his home in Afghanistan and travelling to Australia by boat, he spent nearly 2,000 days in immigration detention.

When he tells the school children that number, they're wide-eyed, mouths agog.

He paints a picture of life in detention: being woken at six o'clock for room searches, eating the same food day after day, and trying to learn English when your mental health is crumbling.

Asad sits on a milk crate inside a medical tent and looks off camera

He tells us how 500 people would gather around the one TV, cheering for the Australian soccer team, only for the match to be switched off mid-way by a guard.

But Asad says the uncertainty affected him the most.

"You don't know what will happen and you don't know when you [will be] released," he says.

"Living in limbo is the hardest thing."

Asad doesn't find it easy sharing his story. It takes him back to "dark days".

But it's his goal to educate people, particularly the next generation.

"Maybe among these young kids, in the future there [will] be a politician," he says. "Maybe they're going to run the country."

"They have to know what's going on with asylum seekers and refugees."

Like Asad, Oleksandra hopes to break the stigma around refugees.

"Some people may be afraid," she says. "They think that we are not educated, we are lazy. [That] we came here and want to seek some support, [and] don't want to do anything."

But that, she points out, is not the case.

Among the guides I spoke to, Oleksandra trained as a psychologist, Ahmed is an engineer, and Asad studied law.

"Desperate people leave their family behind, their homeland and their memories," says Asad. "They have no option."

Oleksandra agrees: "To be a refugee, it's not a choice, it just happens.

"And it could happen to anyone."
