Zimmer / Walking Frames – All You Need To Know About These Walking Aids
Posted by Mike Phipps on July 14, 2021

Hi everyone, it’s Kate here, Ability Superstore ’s resident Occupational Therapist, or OT. My subject for this guide is the humble Zimmer Frame – a really helpful walking aid that has been around for years.
Zimmer Frames / Walking Frames – Are They The Same Thing?
Most people will have heard of Zimmer frames and will have a good idea of what these mobility aids look like.
They are probably one of the most well-known type of walking aids available. We recently wrote about the – History of the Zimmer Frame – have a read by clicking here .
As an OT, I usually refer to these daily living aids as walking frames, rather than Zimmer frames, as Zimmer is just one make.
What Is A Walking Frame?
A walking frame is a frame with grip handles on the top and four points of contact with the floor. These four points of contact can be either (1) two wheels at the front of the frame with rubber ferrule feet at the back, or (2) be four wheeled, or (3) just be a frame without any wheels at all.
These mobility aids tend to made of lightweight aluminium to make them easy to use however, they are strong and sturdy and can support different weights.
Who Uses A Walking Frame?
Zimmer frames tend to be used by people who have reduced and limited walking ability and who require quite a lot of stability and support when they walk and move around. They can often be seen in people’s homes, hospitals and care homes, and there is a huge selection available.
The Main Types Of Walking Frames
There are two main types of walking frames available – folding and non-folding . Within these two types of walking aids, there are different options. There is also a choice of accessories that you can buy, too.
Folding Walking Aids
Folding Zimmer frames do exactly what they say on the tin – they fold down for easy storage when they are not in use, or for ease when travelling.
These mobility aids have four sturdy, height-adjustable legs, easy to grip handles, and are straightforward to fold and re-assemble.
Folding Zimmer frames can come without wheels, or have two wheels, or four. The set-up depends on the person using the mobility aid and their ability to walk, and how much support they require. Many of these walking aids are height adjustable, too.
These aids have non-slip ferrules on their feet if they do not have wheels, similar to walking sticks .
Zimmer frames are strong, sturdy, durable and long-lasting. However, I would say that generally, someone needing to use a mobility aid of this type may need some help with folding and assembling the product.
Walking frames tend to be used by people who require quite a lot of stability and support when walking. Therefore, they may have some difficulty in bending and reaching down to fold and assemble the mobility aid. Whilst this will not be the case for everyone, it is something to consider if a folding walking frame is to be transported.
Non-folding Walking Aids
Not surprisingly, a non-folding walking frame does not fold, but the frame is usually height-adjustable.
As with folding walking frames, non-folding Zimmer frames all have four sturdy legs and easy-to-grip handles. Again, these mobility aids can come with either four wheels, or two wheels, or no wheels at all.
All non-folding walking frames are height adjustable so that they can be set to the correct height for every person. There are also forearm , or trough frames available, for people who need forearm support, or who may have difficulty gripping and using a standard walking frame. As with the folding type, there will be non-slip ferrules on the feet for extra stability and safety, if there are no wheels.
Zimmer and walking frames provide a lot of support when walking. They are often used when people need a slower-moving walking aid and quite a lot of stability to help with their safety and confidence.
Accessories
There is a wide range of walking frame accessories available for both folding and non-folding frames. Most of these accessories are designed for storage, including caddy trays , baskets and bags.
There are also glide skis available that are used to replace non-slip ferrules and to help reduce wear and tear on floor surfaces and carpets ensuring a smooth, gliding motion.
As an occupational therapist, I am a fan of the Buckingham Caddy . This provides an ideal way of transporting food, drinks and other items around the home.
Points To Consider When Choosing A Zimmer Frame
One of the main things to consider and get right is the height of the walking frame. A Zimmer frame shouldn’t be too high, or it puts a strain on your arms. Walking frames also shouldn’t be too low, as that would strain your back, causing poor posture and stooping.
The correct height of a Zimmer frame is from the floor to the wrist bone when your elbows are slightly bent. While the walking frame itself is height adjustable, it is best to choose a frame within the correct height range, so it can then be adjusted more specifically to your needs.
Another point to consider is the width of the Zimmer frame and how much space there is around the home, particularly when getting through doorways. There are narrow walking frame s available if doorway widths are tight.
When thinking about the height and width of your walking aid, you also need to consider your height. A wider frame will generally be more stable and therefore better for someone who is tall, or heavier.
Folded or Non-folded
The next point to consider is whether the walking frame needs to be folded for storage and transportation, or not. For some people, this is a key point to bear in mind.
For some people who need to use the Zimmer frame all the time and do not intend to travel, a non-folding type may be best.
Wheels or No Wheels
Sometimes, having a wheeled mobility frame is better, as the back of the frame can be lifted whilst pushing the front forward. If used correctly, this allows the user to walk more smoothly and naturally.
Often, having a wheeled walking frame is easier however, for some people, the wheels may make the frame move too fast for them.
Level Of Grip
Finally, another important consideration is a person’s level of grip. For some able people who have difficulty with their hands and have a reduced grip, a forearm walking frame, or trough model can be better, for example, for someone with severe arthritis affecting their hands.
The Main Benefits Of A Zimmer Frame
Traditionally, walking frames, or Zimmer frames, have often been used in hospitals and care homes however, as an occupational therapist, I increasingly see people using these walking aids in their own homes.
A walking frame is an ideal mobility aid for people with very limited walking ability and reduced balance, who walk relatively slowly and need quite a lot of support and stability. These mobility aids are easy to use and assemble and provide safety, security and independence to those who have difficulty getting around.
There are so many different types of Zimmer frames available to suit a variety of people and homes. They are a solid, strong, reliable, and hard-wearing aid that can often reduce the risk of falls when used correctly.
Rollators are another popular form of walking device. Rollators provide mobility and come in different versions suitable for both inside and out. Don't forget, walking sticks also provide support and mobility, too!

Walking Frames
- Walking Frames with Wheels
Zimmer Frames
Wheeled walkers.
Walking frames offer support for people when they’re walking around both indoors and outdoors. They provide stability and balance to those who are a little less steady on their feet.
Designs come with three or four legs (depending on how much stability or assistance you need). There are rubber ferrules attached at the bottom of each leg to give you some grip on the ground and hold the frame in place.
Generally, walking frames are used by people who may be recovering from an injury. Or if someone is having some difficulties with balance when staying mobile.
When using a walking frame, 64% of the user’s weight is transferred through the arms. This makes them a lot more stable/ comfortable than crutches.
A few additional benefits:
- Walking frames are easy to use
- They can fit into smaller areas, such as public transport, car boot and/or the corner of smaller homes, when not in use.
Walking frames with wheels
If you’re finding it too difficult to move your standard walking frame, it is possible to get one fitted with wheels which makes it easier to move. With a two-wheeled walking frame, the wheels are fitted to the front legs whilst the back two legs have the same rubber ferrules.
Wheeled walkers also require slightly less effort as you only need to tilt the frame forward and lift the back two legs to be able to move around. This is ideal for using around the house and for long periods as you expend less energy.
There isn’t any difference between walking frames and Zimmer frames. Zimmer is a brand of walking frame — a bit like the Hoover is a brand of vacuum cleaner.
However, the reason Zimmer frames are so popular is because they are very light weight and the frame is adjustable.
The non-wheeled version is more stable than a narrower, wheeled Zimmer frame. Although they are potentially harder to manoeuvre around the home.
The user of the Zimmer frame will have to have reasonable strength in their arms, as the frame needs to be lifted every time they step forward.
Wheeled walkers are fitted with 4-wheels. They come in lots of different configurations and provide stability whilst still being easy to move.
If the individual has trouble with balance, a wheeled walker may not be the best option. The wheels could increase their risk of a trip or fall.
However, if balance isn’t such an issue, and the wheeled walker is just used for aiding to walking, wheeled walkers are the way to go.
The wheeled walker requires less arm strength, and they can also partially support body weight and balance.
- 4-wheeled walkers can also be used as a temporary seat for people who need regular breaks.
- Many also have storage, so can be used as a carrier for shopping etc.
In terms of the differences between wheeled walkers and rollators, they’re actually pretty much the same thing. A rollator refers to a 3-wheeled or 4-wheeled walking aid.
Rollators should not be used to actively support body weight, as they are liable to slipping out from under the individual if too much weight is unnecessarily put onto the frame. However, they do sport very practical hand-operated brakes if the user needs to use these.
Rollators can be used indoors, and outdoors and the walker can offer comfort for individuals suffering from illnesses such as arthritis, including mid and lower back pain.
Rollators with bags will help you carry your shopping around town.
Walking frames and Zimmer frames vs. wheeled walkers and rollators
So, we know that a Zimmer frame is just a particular brand of walking frame. And that rollators are just a class of wheeled walkers that sometimes have 3-wheels instead of 4…
But what about walking frames vs. wheeled walkers? The terminology is quite similar, but there are a couple of key differences between wheeled walkers and walking frames.
For people with balance problems, a walking frame is recommended for stability. However, we wouldn’t advise using a walking frame to travel longer distances. They are best for indoor use and short outdoor journeys e.g. around the garden.
A wheeled walker can be used for longer trips out, providing user has good enough balance!
Wheeled walkers and rollators also tend to have large tyres rather than the smaller, moulded wheels you’d see on a walking frame. Larger wheels are easier to manoeuvre, have better grip, and do better with outdoor use (which is mostly where you’d use a rollator).
They’re available in three-wheeled and four-wheeled models and they are a bit smaller than walking frames.
Brakes is another key difference. Wheeled walkers and rollators are fitted with brakes. Walking frames are not. That’s because the former has wheels on each leg. They need brakes to ensure it stays steady and stationary when you need it to!
Wheeled walkers are fitted with handy brakes so that you can lock the walker in place when you want to remain stationary.
Walking frames & wheeled walkers offer different levels of support and mobility to people who have varying needs.
The main difference with these walking aids is the amount of support offered by both:
- Walking Frames offer more help to the user in standing upright , if you feel this is right for you, then a walking frame would be a good option.
- Rollator|Wheeled Walkers always come with wheels – this is good for increased mobility but is only ideal if the user has good balance already.
If you need help staying upright when walking around; a walking frame or ‘Zimmer frame’ is the way to go.
If you don’t require too much support when walking and are steadier on your feet – a wheeled walker/rollator is the better option.

What exactly is a zimmer-frame walker.
A Zimmer frame is another term for a standard walker. The name is derived from a company known as Zimmer Holdings, which is a major manufacturer of walkers and other disability equipment. The phrase ,“Zimmer frame” is most commonly used in the United Kingdom, however there are many consumers in the US who are familiar with it as well. Once rollators were invented and became popular, the term 3-wheeled Zimmer frame became popular. There are numerous benefits to using a Zimmer frame, especially one with two front wheels:
Avoid Atrophy
In order to maintain or increase stamina and stability, a person needs to exercise his muscles. A Zimmer frame allows users to exercise their leg muscles by using them for what they’re intended for – walking. People’s bodies get older, and sometimes, people suffer from debilitating conditions such as trauma, surgery, or even partially crippling muscular or skeletal disorders. The more that these individuals, and anyone, really, can use their muscles, the better. Exercising muscles by using a walker also helps to maintain one’s mental well-being and allows users to control their weight, keep their cholesterol and blood pressure in check, and manage other health concerns.
Increase Support
Walking without assistance – or even walking with the best walking canes out there - can get pretty tiring. Thus, having a mobility Zimmer frame can greatly enhance a user’s walking experience by allowing them a bit of extra support on their arms. The weight is balanced and distributed evenly throughout the entire frame, rather than just in a singular space. This also helps users with comfort, since they don’t have to put all of their weight on their legs and joints. The older a person gets, the more susceptible they are to slips, falls, and even broken bones, often due to falls, but sometimes caused by weight bearing. By using a Zimmer-style frame, they can avoid this by reducing the weight load on their bodies.
Improve Balance
One thing is for certain: walkers, rollators, and walking canes are all used to increase or maintain one’s stability and balance. Note that Zimmer walkers (with wheels or without) in particular provide more balance and security. They have a broader frame that allows a user to maintain proper weight distribution across a wider area, and since many Zimmer frames with wheels only have the two wheels (with the exception of three-wheel rollators), a person doesn’t have to worry about losing their grip or their walker “going rogue” and rolling out from directly in front of them.
Walk Faster & Smoother
Speaking of wheels, a Zimmer frame with wheels adds some of the functionality of a rollator in the sense that they can provide faster walking compared to standard frame walkers and walking canes. While they may take more space, some users have reportedly been able to walk at a normal pace using a Zimmer walker, since they only have to lift the back end up, thus reducing fatigue and increasing their mobility the more they use it.
You Can Decorate Your Zimmer Frame Walker!
While the Zimmer frame movement originally started in the UK, it has migrated to other areas of the world. Many users, including the elderly, have begun to choose Zimmer frames, thanks to the numerous attachments that allow them to be fully customizable.
Some people have decorated their Zimmer frames with cup and bottle holders, larger wheels for more “off road” use, walker tennis balls of various colors, baskets, sheepskin walker grips, walker trays, and other decorations. There are even Zimmer walkers to be found online with fuzzy dice! Add that to the fact that some of these walkers can come in multiple color varieties. Indeed, a person can literally pick and choose to make their walker their own “personal vehicle.”
There Are Some Concerns to Look for When Buying
If you’re looking to buy a Zimmer frame walker, it’s important to know what to look for so that you can have the best fit possible. Many users neglect to delve into the direct components that would make their walker more comfortable, and this can lead to a less safe or comfortable experience. Two of the most important things to look for when buying a Zimmer frame are:
The Weight of the Walker Itself
Nearly all of our walkers are lightweight and are constructed of high quality, medical-grade aluminum for superb stability and ruggedness. When figuring out what weight capacity you need, keep in mind that the accessories and items a person stores in his walker are going to add to the weight of their Zimmer walker.
Weight Capacity of the Frame
Weight capacity is one of the primary factors that influences safety. By using a walker that doesn’t support the user’s weight, one risks numerous injury possibilities as well as voidance of the warranty from the walker manufacturer. The extra wear and tear of using any walker or medical walking aid in excess of its weight rating can deteriorate the Zimmer’s lifespan, making it buckle or break down faster. Most of these walkers have weight capacities of 250-300 pounds, but users who are heavier may enjoy particular benefits by finding one with a higher weight capacity.

- We endeavour to dispatch from our warehouse in Port Macquarie NSW within one to two working days after receiving payment.
- Delivery times after we dispatch vary depending on destination. For example, for Sydney and Brisbane shipping usually takes one business day. Melbourne usually takes two working days.
- We do not offer free shipping because the cost of freight varies greatly depending on where the item will be sent in Australia. We think it is fairer to keep the price as low as we can and add freight costs that reflect the actual cost of freight rather than inflate the price to subsidise the shipments to the more costly areas.
- To find out your freight costs, simply place the item in your cart and add your address, then the online shop will calculate it for you.
- Please see further shipping information here .
- We hope your walker is right for you but if you want to return it, please see our full returns policy here .

Flyweight at only 4.8kgs
The byACRE Carbon Ultralight walker is not only a lightweight rollator, it is also the lightest carbon fibre walking frame in the world. Weighing only 4.8kg, this walker is a marvel of engineering, combining strength and durability with unmatched lightness. Its carbon fibre frame is incredibly strong and sturdy, yet weighs a fraction of what traditional rollators weigh. This makes the byACRE Carbon Ultralight Rollator perfect for those who want to maintain their independence without being weighed down.
Designed with physios
The byACRE Carbon Ultralight walker is designed with your comfort and convenience in mind. Its ergonomic features means it fits beautifully into your hand thanks to the contoured grip. Another unique feature is the inverted handles, which allow you to steer much more easily and walk more naturally with an more upright posture. This innovative design also reduces strain on your wrists and hands, making it easier for you to grip and manoeuvre the rollator.
Innovative Frame & smoother ride
The boomerang shape of the Carbon Ultralight doesn't only look sharp by echoing aerodynamic design and hiding the brake cables, but it also reduces vibration - byACRE's designers removed any direct vertical connection from the ground to the handles to soften the ride - pretty clever!
Built To Last
The byACRE Carbon Ultralight Rollator is not only lightweight, but also incredibly strong and durable. It is built with a combination of high-quality materials, including a carbon fibre frame and aircraft grade aluminium crossbars, which provide exceptional strength and stability. The carbon fibre frame is super sturdy, yet weighs significantly less than frames made of traditional materials like steel or aluminium.
It's the little things...
The byACRE Carbon Ultralight walker folds with one smooth motion, and is easy to grip and lift to pop in the car or to take on the bus. And once you're on the go, you can still perch - the built-in seat is perfect for a breather. byACRE's designers have also turned their mind to a number of smart accessories including bags and a backrest, which are optional additions (see below).
Carbon Ultralight FAQs
A: The key differences between the Ultralight and the Overland are the wheels, weight and length. The Ultralight is 4.8kg and the Overland is 6.7kg. The Ultralight has PU/rubber mix wheels whilst the Overland has pneumatic air-filled tyres. The Ultralight is 66cm long and the Overland is 73cm. Both the Ultralight and Overland handles have a height range of 82 - 95cm. So, the Overland is a slightly larger piece of kit designed for more mixed terrain. The Ultralight is smaller, designed for urban and indoor environments. Both are very portable and both look great.
A: The inverted handles encourage you to stand more upright and closer to the frame and this encourages good posture. Joint pain can be an issue with traditional shaped handles but the ergonmically shaped byACRE handles mean you steer the walker with the palm of your hand rather than using your finger, wrist and hand joints.
A : The byACRE Carbon Ultralight is certified to meet ISO 11199-2:2005
A: The Ultralight is available in Strawberry Red, Oyster White, Carbon Black, British Racing Green and Royal Blue.
A: There are three sizes - Compact, Regular and Wide Track. Specifications are above (see specifications drop down) but essentially the Compact is for people or adolescents who need a seat that is closer to the ground:
- The main difference between the regular and the Compact is the seat height (56cm on the Compact and 61cm on the Regular).
- The main difference between the regular and Wide Track is the seat width (42cm on the Regular and 47cm on the Wide Track. The seat height is the same on both of these at 61cm).
- Some people prefer a wider seat for comfort.
A: The frame is made from carbon fibre. The other parts are made from plastic and aluminium. The wheels are made from a PU/rubber mix and are slightly soft to touch.
A: The byACRE Carbon Ultralight is designed by byACRE APS in Denmark. In 2019 the byACRE Ultralight received a Red Dot Award, which is one of the world's most prestigious design awards that has been won by other well-known design oriented companies such as Apple, Bose, BMW and Porsche. byACRE oversees the manufacturing of its products in their Xiamen factory using the very best materials and construction methods. The factory specialises in the production of high quality healthcare equipment.
A: Yes. The Ultralight is so compact it will fit into even the smallest boot.
A: The walking frame and a locking tag, which holds the frame closed when it's folded. Any accessories purchased in addition to the walking frame will be added to the box.

Walking frame travel bag.
Finding a solution to travelling day-to-day is important to many of our families. Recently I was at a craft fair and found this walking frame carry all bag. I thought it would be perfect as a gift for my mother-in-law who now permanently uses a walking frame. It was well made and it seemed like a good solution for her when she goes shopping.
I’m sharing this here for others as a possible solution to getting around with a walking frame. You will have to use your imagination and picture a more modern or more appropriate patterned bag for someone who is younger.
The bag attaches to the front of the walking frame with good security.
The bag folds over the front walking frame bar and attaches with the velcro pictured above (right) and then has the added security of ties on either side.
There are multiple compartments which will make it easy for my mother-in-law to access things like her mobile phone, a pen and any thing else she is carry with her for the day. Either side of the bag has two outer pockets and two zippered compartments. It really does pack a lot of storage into a bag.
I was so impressed with this as a solution I’ve had Hubby draw up a pattern for it for anyone wanting to make their own. For kids and teens you could use material with patterns appropriate to their age. The large pockets make access easy for someone with hand function limitations.

I would love to give credit to the lady who made this but it merely came with a tag with initials. A clever person and a great solution. Hopefully my mother-in-law will agree come Christmas.

Where can I buy in Adelaide burbs a walking frams clip on carry bag? Please? Thanks. [email protected]
Marilyn, This bag is handmade and I saw it at a local fair. I measured it and have put the details here, perhaps you could have someone make it for you? I have no idea where it could be purchased.

Walking frames and rollators allow users to walk with a fair degree of freedom while providing more support and balance than crutches or canes. The stable, free-standing nature of frames make them ideal for many users, although it is important to consider the weight of the device and its portability in buildings, vehicles and other tight quarters.
