Trip meter reset on command

  • Add to quote

I'm a bit embarrassed to ask this, but I can't find it in the manual. The trip distance/time display resets every time I shut the car off, and I would like it to only reset when I want. Is there a trick to doing that?

There are two styles of trip meter on the 5th generation RAV4. You are looking at the last trip distance display. To see the other type of display, push the button that sticks out from the instruments; that will change the ODO display to a trip meter; there are two, trip A and trip B. To reset either of them, just hold in the button for a few seconds. To return to the ODO, push the button again. I reset the Trip A every time I fill up with gas so I can calculate my MPG for that tank of gas. Edit: Don't be embarrassed. There is no such thing as a dumb question, only dumb answers.

trip meter reset button toyota

That display will only ever show you the most recent trip stats when you shut the car off. FK is correct, there are 3 rolling meters connected to the stalk button that is probably on the left side of your gauge cluster (that's where mine is but I don't have a Prime). Push that button to go through them: 1. ODO - Cannot change 2. Trip A - Reset by holding button down 3. Trip B - Reset by holding button down You can use Trip A or B to track whatever intervals you like.

Yes, I'm well aware of the ODO, Trip A, Trip B feature, as it's covered in the manual. I was just asking about the data in the MID display. I was hoping to have it retained after shutting off, but obviously that's not an option. Thanks to everyone for trying to help.

well it is retained after shutoff, but only for a few minutes I've gassed up quick and went back to driving and trip was still active. another time I took longer at the station and it reset, so there is some kind of hold-down timer but it's short

What are you trying to track longer-term?

It would be much better if when you select say Trip A, and zero it out for miles and MPG that it would accumulate miles and MPG till you zeroed out Trip A the next time. I can think of no situation at all where it is useful to have the MPG zero out every time you turn off the car! This must be a bug.

Just picked up a used Yaris Y20 2019/20 hybrid.  Trying to reset the trip A and trip B meters but manual does not seem to help.  It has the colour display with type A control and no obvious button (as on old version) to press for reset.  Previous owner obviously did not reset as both trips are same as odomenter.  Can anyone help?

Usually, whatever button you press to cycle between Trip A, B, Odo, etc., also resets - You just hold when it's displaying the counter you want to reset (e.g. press it until Trip A shows, then press and hold it until it's reset to 0)

Like

It tells you on the screen 😃 I think it's the Trip button to cycle the trip, press and hold to reset, can't be bothered to walk to the car ATM

Edit. From that Spanish waiter

xp130tripdisplay.thumb.jpg.d2a4ce330adefdfdcd205b09a28ff5b5.jpg

its easer to press the button below the speedo then when trip A is displayed just press and hold until it zeros. Do  the same for trip B.

It goes through a cycle om MPH. Trip A , Trip B, and Milage to next service.

Confused

No buttons on the gauges at all after 2017, unless is ultra low poverty spec, i did the gauge swap on my 2016

Thanks to both of you - it worked.

How To Reset The Odometer On A Toyota Corolla

How to reset the two trip meters and odometer on a Toyota Corolla of the 10th generation.

When the ignition switch is turned on, this meter shows the odometer and two trip meters.

  • The vehicle’s odometer displays the total mileage traveled.
  • Since each trip meter was last reset to zero, two trip meters separately display two distinct driving lengths. On each trip, you can measure the distance with one trip meter and the fuel efficiency with the other. If the electrical power source is cut off, all trip meter data is lost.
  • The trip meter reset knob changes the meter display and resets the two trip meters to zero.

Push the knob briefly, then immediately let go to change the meter display. Each time you push, the meter display switches from the odometer to the trip meters A and B before returning to the odometer.

Display the reading of the trip meter A, then push and hold the knob until the meter is reset to zero. The trip meter B can be reset using the same procedure.

The Toyota Corolla 10 generation E140, E150 owner’s manual is where you can find all the information on how to reset the odometer and two trip meters.

This is the entire process for the Toyota Corolla 10 generation E140, E150 to reset the odometer and two trip meters. After an oil change, you can choose to reset any maintenance oil lights. Or, when maintenance is required, reset the check engine light, airbag light, inspection key, or insp error on Toyota vehicles. Or any service reminder warning light that flashes on the display. Enter the name of the vehicle in the search box to obtain information about it and learn how to manually reset other service reminders.

How can the odometer on a Toyota Corolla be reset?

In order to make “Trip A” appear on the main screen, press and hold the trip reset button next to the odometer. Reset the key to “Off.” Turn the key back to the “On position while pushing the button to reset the trip. Hold down the trip reset button until the odometer’s miles section flashes zero.

How can I reset the mileage on my Toyota?

How to reset or turn off the maintenance light is one of the queries we receive frequently. While many new cars utilize synthetic oil, which only has to be changed every 10,000 miles, the maintenance light on a newer model Toyota turns on every 5,000 miles to remind you to get an oil change and rotate your tires. Therefore, a better-safe-than-sorry reminder light illuminates every 5,000 miles. Since traveling to the dealership to have the light reset by a technician may be inconvenient, we wanted to teach how to reset this light in the comfort of your own driveway. Keep in mind that the light also flashes to alert you to rotate your tires every 5,000 miles.

Your Maintenance Required Light Can Be Reset By:

  • While the odometer is set to the usual total mileage mode, not “Trip A” or “Trip B,” turn off your engine.
  • Turn the key to the “on position” while pressing and holding the mileage reset button.
  • When the odometer digits have all reached zero, the maintenance light will have reset, and you can release the button.

We anticipate that these instructions will enable you to reset this light if you so choose. Please do not hesitate to call or visit Heritage Toyota Scion if you are uncomfortable performing this or are unsure of why your maintenance light has come on.

The reset button for the odometer is where?

Using the lever on the left side of the steering wheel, reset the trip odometer. By pushing and holding the RESET button on the left-hand steering wheel lever, you can reset all the data in the trip odometer TM, including the distance, average fuel consumption, average speed, and driving time.

How can I reset the digital odometer?

The odometer can be rolled back to remove hundreds or even thousands of kilometers from the number displayed, just like any other part of a car can be changed. This reading is a crucial piece of information for potential buyers, but the odometer rollback is a scam that has been around for a long time.

An odometer rollback used to describe manually going backwards in the numbers on a mechanical device that measures how far a vehicle has traveled. Since then, odometers have changed to digital versions; the last mechanical odometers were put into use in the early 2000s. Digital odometers can be rolled back using equipment that hooks directly into the electronic circuit of the vehicle, or by removing the circuit board of the car and changing the odometer reading.

Which is the best way to check the used car mileage?

You may quickly confirm that the stated mileage matches what you see on the odometer by using the Vingurus website. If you are already inside the car, look for signs of tampering, such as low mileage readings, but keep in mind that the car appears to be much older. Embrace your gut feeling.

Can a digital odometer be tampered with?

Yes. Any odometer, including digital ones, is subject to modification or alteration. Digital odometers can be modified, although doing so requires specialized tools and leaves minimal trace. Scammers will either alter the display’s numbers or swap out the memory chip for one with fewer miles on it.

How do you tell if the mileage has been altered?

When you test drive a car with an analog odometer, see if the numbers are accurate or rising. A vehicle’s digital odometer makes it more difficult to determine the mileage, so make sure to review the vehicle history record to see if the mileage is accurate.

How do I know if my odometer has been tampered with?

Check the interior of the display for fingerprints or blemishes. Even after a routine examination, these should not be present. Additionally, you can examine the age of the seat, the condition of the carpet, and the wear on the pedals to determine the actual age of the automobile and compare it to the odometer reading.

Is odometer fraud common in the used car market these days?

Odometer fraud does still happen. Although it was anticipated that as more cars used digital odometers, the number of occurrences of odometer rollback would decline, con artists have devised new techniques to defraud consumers.

Why is it illegal to reset the odometer?

Resetting an odometer is against the law since it is fraud. If you were to purchase a vehicle with an altered odometer, the vendor would have misled you when making the sale.

The main purpose of rolling back odometers is to make a car appear to be newer than it actually is so that the seller may charge more for the fictitious low mileage on the clock. Additionally, when automobiles get older and travel farther, they may need more maintenance to remain safe and roadworthy.

Incorrect mileage on a car’s odometer can cause new owners to put off servicing the automobile because they think it hasn’t covered enough miles to warrant this necessary maintenance.

What happens if you reset mileage?

Both state and federal law consider it a serious offense to reset or tamper with a car’s odometer. Consumers have been estimated to lose between $4 and $10 billion due to odometer fraud.

If you are caught rolling back the miles on an automobile, you risk going to jail. Resetting the odometer to trick consumers into buying your car is not only unethical morally, but it is also illegal.

Can you reverse an odometer?

Driving in reverse allows you to wind back mechanical odometers. These traditional odometers can be used in the reverse manner in addition to using springs, wires, and pegs to turn as the miles increase.

However, manufacturers no longer use analog odometers, and digital odometers simply record the miles you have traveled, whether you are moving forward or backward.

How do I know if my car mileage is genuine?

You could be concerned about the mileage if you didn’t purchase your vehicle from a reliable dealer. You may perform a few quick checks to see whether the mileage on your car is accurate.

Look at the engine and the car’s overall condition. If the condition of the automobile does not seem to match the low mileage displayed on the odometer, there is a possibility that the mileage has been tampered with.

If the steering wheel, gear stick, and pedal pads appear well-used and old but the car’s mileage is modest, something is off and your mileage might be inflated.

Does replacing the engine reset mileage?

The odometer on a new car does not reset the miles. An odometer keeps track of all the parts of an automobile; it is not just connected to the engine. Regardless of any parts needing to be serviced or replaced, the odometer records the distance your car has gone over the course of its whole “life”.

How is an odometer returned to zero?

There are two typical causes for wanting to reset your car’s odometer. First, you might wish to reset the odometer because the mileage occasionally resets on its own or because you’re engaging in fraudulent activity. Resetting the odometer increases the value and makes the automobile appear newer if you want to sell it. You should keep in mind that committing such a fraudulent act is punishable by law. To learn how to reset the odometer on a Toyotaor any other make of carfollow the procedures listed below.

The majority of Japanese automakers display the vehicle mileage on the instrument cluster, not the car computer, when they replace the instrument cluster. The mileage on the odometer will read zero once you replace the instrument cluster. If you choose to utilize a used instrument cluster from another automobile to replace yours, the used cluster will display the mileage of the original car.

Why is it permitted to reset the odometer if this is a fraud? It’s against the law to replace the odometer without completing any papers. As you probably saw in the previous few lines, it is against the law in the United States to reset an odometer. Transposing the original miles from the previous instrument cluster before replacement is the sole permitted method of instrument cluster replacement (other than resetting the odometer).

The simplest method to reset the odometer is by turning the knob. On the instrument cluster, look for a knob. This knob performs a number of functions, including displaying the percentage of fuel left and temperature readings. Surprisingly, this knob can reset the trip miles on a car if you’re looking for a way to do so. Press and hold down this knob for a short period of time to reset the miles; as the fuel economy increases, your odometer will reset to zero.

Reassemble the Odometer: Resetting the odometer on older vehicles will be a simple and uncomplicated task if you are a gearhead about car parts and mechanisms like me. All you have to do is disassemble the instrument cluster using standard mechanic tools like screwdrivers and pliers, reset the mile values manually, and then put it back together.

In any event, some automakers decided to incorporate a tamper-proof seal because they are aware of these tactics. If your car has a tamper-proof seal, it won’t be simple to reset the odometer without being discovered.

If you decide to alter the odometer readings, be sure to match the readings to the expected lifespan of your car. Tires have a 25k mile life expectancy on average. If your vehicle’s tires appear to be worn out and your mileage reads 15k, odometer rigging will be simple to spot.

Holding odometer button doesn't make "Maintenance Required" light go off

  • Add to quote

Hi Forum, "Maintenance Required" light came on in my 2016 Highlander. I followed the procedure that I found on the interwebs: https://www.mossytoyota.com/service/service-tips/how-to-reset-maintenance-light-on-toyota-rav4/ 1) Put your key in the ignition. Turn the key to position one. This is the position just before starting the car. 2) Push the odometer button on the dashboard. Hold it for a second or two. Then, turn your key to position two. 3) Continue to hold the odometer button for around ten seconds. The light should flash, beep, and then go out. 4) Once off, release the odometer button . Start your car. But no matter how many times I do it, the "Maintenance Required" light never went away!! When I took the car for an oil change the mechanics magically made it disappear, but when I asked the mechanics to teach me how to do it they laughed in my face and wouldn't tell me the secret. Rude. Will never go back to them for business!! So, am I supposed to turn the key back to "OFF" between steps 2 and 3? What's the secret? Thank you so much, Damon

What does the owner's manual say to do?

this is from a 2017 manual - I would assume your manual also has the info ■Resetting the message indicating maintenance is required (U.S.A. only) After the required maintenance is performed according to the maintenance schedule, please reset the message. To reset the message, follow the procedure described below:  Using the trip meter Vehicles without a smart key system: Turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position with the trip meter A reading shown. Vehicles with a smart key system: Turn the engine switch off with the trip meter A reading shown. Vehicles without a smart key system: While pressing the trip meter reset button (P. 93), turn the engine switch to the “ON” position (do not start the engine, reset mode will be canceled). Vehicles with a smart key system: While pressing the trip meter reset button (P. 93), turn the engine switch to the IGNITION ON mode (do not start the engine, otherwise the reset mode will be canceled). Continue to press and hold the button until the trip meter displays “000000”.  Using the multi-information display While the engine is running, switch the multi-information display to . (P. 99) Select “Maintenance System” on of the multi-information display. Select “Yes” on the “Maintenance System” screen. “Initialization Completed” will be displayed on the multi-information display when the reset procedure has been completed. ■Allow inspection and repairs to be performed

The OD needs to be on Trip A. Set OD to Trip A. Then turn vehicle off. While holding down the OD button, turn vehicle to the On position. Keep holding down OD button til reset is complete. Takes less then 10 seconds.

On my 2019 it's in a menu on the driver's dash display. It's on like the last page and then you scroll down.

Thank you all for the smart insights. I didn't think to look in the manual because I assumed it required a mechanic's repair book (like a Haynes or similar). I'll look in the manual and report back to all y'all about the results. Either way, that internet website from Mossy Toyota is NOT working.

The odometer button procedure is for older model Toyotas before they had the small screen in the dashboard. This is how it worked on my 2008 FJ Cruiser or 2014 Venza.
