Back to ‘Immigration system statistics, year ending March 2024’ content page .

Data relates to the year ending March 2024 and all comparisons are with the year ending March 2023 (unless indicated otherwise). All data includes dependants, unless indicated otherwise.

1. Passenger arrivals to the UK

This section presents the latest statistics relating to passenger flows across the border. Most passenger arrivals will be British nationals (many of whom will be returning from short trips outside the UK), and short-term visitors (such as those coming to the UK for a holiday). More information on the data sources can be found in the ‘About the statistics’ section below.

In the year ending March 2024 there were 125.5 million arrivals, 13% more than the preceding year.

Passengers arriving by air accounted for 88% of all passenger arrivals to the UK (across all routes) in the year ending March 2024, with 7% arriving via rail and 5% by sea. These are similar to the proportions for the year ending March 2023

  • Data prior to 2022 comes from Advanced Passenger Information (API) and is not directly comparable to data from Borders and Immigration Transaction Data (BITD).

From March 2020, following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, various measures were introduced to restrict global travel and the spread of the virus. These measures (testing and Passenger Locator Forms) were phased out in the first few months of 2022, with travel to the UK increasing, as the comparison against 2023 and 2024 shows in Figure 1.

Figure 2: Monthly passenger arrivals to the UK, by nationality, January 2022 to March 2024

Source: Passenger arrivals - Arr_02

In the year ending March 2024, 55% of total arrivals were British nationals. This proportion typically remained between 50 to 60% with some fluctuations which may be due to seasonal trends or differing patterns in holidays.

Prior to 2022 during periods with notable COVID-19 restrictions, such as early 2021, the proportion of British nationals was as low as 31%, which aligned with the lowest overall air passenger arrivals with other nationals also decreasing. As passenger numbers increased from July 2021 onwards, we also saw that proportion increase beyond 50%.

2. Visitors and short-term stays

Only certain nationalities (‘visa-nationals’) are required to obtain an entry clearance visa before coming to visit the UK, which is one reason why there are considerably more passenger arrivals than visas granted. Additionally, passenger arrivals will include British nationals. Many nationalities, including US nationals do not normally require a visa to visit the UK; consequently, there are considerably fewer visitor visas granted than visitor arrivals.

There are several ways a non-British national may get permission to visit the UK for a short, temporary period, (usually up to 6 months), for purposes such as tourism, visiting friends or family, carrying out a business activity, or undertaking a short course of study.

people with existing immigration status do not need additional documents

the electronic travel authorisation (ETA) scheme is for visitors who do not need a visa for short stays to the UK, or who do not already have a UK immigration status prior to travelling; further information can be found on the Electronic travel authorisation (ETA) guidance page

There were 2.0 million visitor visas granted in the year ending March 2024, 30% higher than the year ending March 2023 and 17% lower than 2019, prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Visitor visa grants have continued to increase post-pandemic but are still below their peak in 2019 (2.4 million).

In the year ending March 2024, Indian nationals accounted for 25% of Visitor visas granted (511,167), with Chinese nationals accounting for 23% (455,600). The next largest visa nationalities were Turkish (7%), Nigerian (5%), South African and Pakistani (both 4%).

The increase in the latest year was largely accounted for by 348,861 more visitor visas for Chinese nationals, over 4 times the number in the year ending March 2023 but 29% fewer than in the year ending December 2019. Visitor visas for Indian nationals increased in the latest year by 6%.

The ETA scheme opened to Qatari nationals on 15 October 2023. From 1 February 2024, the scheme also opened to nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. To the end of March 2024, there were 183,642 applications for ETAs and 180,518 grants.

Additional information on visitors to the UK is published by the Office for National Statistics ( ONS ) in its publication ‘Leisure and tourism statistics’ .

3. Other grants of Entry clearance visas

There were 1.4 million other grants of entry clearance in the year ending March 2024, 8% fewer than in the year ending March 2023. This was made up of Work (605,264), Study (562,403), Family (79,384) and ‘Other’ (125,861) visas, which includes the Ukraine schemes (33,071).

  • Other includes Ukraine Scheme Visas, British National (Overseas), EEA and EUSS Permits.

Total visa numbers are now higher than pre-pandemic levels with almost 3.4 million visas granted in the year ending March 2024. Figure 3 shows that the increase within the last year is primarily due to 459,482 more visitor visas, which now make up over half (59%) of total entry clearance visas granted in the year ending March 2024. However, the number of visitor visas issued is 13% lower than in the year ending March 2020, prior to the pandemic.

By contrast, there are now more work and study visas granted in the year ending March 2024 (1.7 million) than in the year ending March 2020 (597,958). There were also 125,861 visas granted for other reasons in the year ending March 2024, (including grants of leave on the Ukraine Schemes and the British National (Overseas) route), which is less than half (-60%) the number compared to the previous year. Family visas have remained stable within this period.

4. About these statistics

The statistics in this section provide an indication of the number of people who enter the UK.

The data does not show whether, or when, an individual arrived in the UK, what they did on arrival to the UK or how long they stayed in the UK.

Many nationalities do not normally require a visa to visit the UK. As a result, they will be counted in the passenger arrivals data but not in the visa data. A list of designated nationalities referred to as ‘visa nationals’ who do require a visa to visit the UK can be found in Immigration Rules Appendix V: visitor rules .

For several reasons, data on passenger arrivals is not directly comparable with data on Entry clearance visas granted. A summary of what each dataset counts is provided in section 4.1 below and section 4.2 .

4.1 Passenger arrivals

The statistics in this release relate to the number of passengers crossing the border through legitimate routes. The method used to measure those arriving in the UK have been improved and differ from methods used previously and published regularly in the ‘admissions’ data tables, which are now a part of the ‘Passengers refused entry at the border’ summary tables. Further information on the differences between these methods can be found in the user guide. Any nationality breakdowns are based on the nationality associated with the passport used to enter the UK (regardless of any dual nationality held).

The statistics include people entering the UK on most air, sea and rail routes, and while they include the vast majority of arrivals, there are some coverage gaps. For example, people entering the UK via the Common Travel Area (CTA) between the UK and Ireland are not required to present their passport on entry to the UK and will not be included in the data.

Previous Passenger Arrivals reports used Advance Passenger Information (API) data, which primarily relates to passengers coming to the UK via commercial aviation routes. The data does not include those arriving by sea or rail routes, by private vessel. As a result, figures in this report may differ from passenger arrival statistics published elsewhere, however, the levels should be broadly comparable.

4.2 Entry clearance visas

Data on Entry clearance visas in this section refer to the number of visas granted for all reasons within the period. References in the statistics to ‘visas’ will also include Entry clearance ‘permits’, such as EEA and EU Settlement Scheme Family permits, or Frontier Worker permits. If an individual was granted multiple visas in a given period, this will be counted as multiple grants in the statistics. If an individual entered the UK multiple times within the period for which a visa was valid, this will be counted as one grant in the visa statistics, but multiple arrivals in the passenger arrivals data.

Year-on-year comparisons of the number of decisions can be affected by quarterly fluctuations in the data. Such fluctuations can be examined in more detail in the quarterly data that is available in the published tables.

Several known factors may have affected the number of applications and outcomes of visit-related visas over time. For example, the Home Office launched a 2-year Chinese visa pilot in January 2016 for Chinese nationals. The increase in longer-term Visitor visas may affect the number of subsequent re-applications by Chinese nationals.

More information on non-visitor arrival and visa data by category is included in ʻWhy do people come to the UK? To work’ , ʻWhy do people come to the UK? To study’ and ʻWhy do people come to the UK? For family reasons’ .

For more information on specific routes to the UK, including Ukraine Visa Schemes and British National (Overseas) ( BN(O) ) visas, see the ‘ Safe and legal (humanitarian) routes to the UK ’.

Figures released on tourism visitor numbers

Visit Britain has published its latest figures on the number of day visits to Great Britain. These statistics are particularly interesting as they give us a picture of domestic tourism day visits post pandemic. They also show the sector has a long way to go to full recovery, which will not be without its challenges.

Plenty of new regulations are coming through the UK and Welsh Governments that seek to curb the impact of overnight visitors (for example the tourism tax in Wales and short-term let registration in England). It is interesting therefore to see the potential scale of impact from day visitors on local communities. However, the latest stats also prove vital in demonstrating the value of British tourism to the economy.

The survey conducted by Visit Britain defines day visits in a number of ways:

-Lasts three hours or more including travel time

-Undertake one or more leisure activity

-Must not be overnight

-Be undertaken less than once a week

-In most cases be in a different local authority to where the trip started (except for in the case of visiting a visitor attraction, a live sporting event, or a public event)

-Went to a visitor attraction (e.g. a historic house)

-Went sightseeing and exploring areas

-Spa/health/beauty treatments

-Retreat or meditation

-Attending an organized public event (e.g. exhibition, concert, fair, live sport)

-Art galleries, museums and local culture centres

The data from Visit Britain compares the months of April-December in 2021, with the same months in 2022. Data is not available for 2020 as heavy lockdown restrictions were in place. For context, from April 2021, many non-essential attractions opened in the UK and there was a steady lifting of restrictions with domestic overnight holidays allowed in May.

Number of visits

There was a 42% rise in the number of tourism day visits in April-December from 2021 to 2022. During these months in 2022, there were 888m trips, up from 624m in the same period of 2021.

For 2022 as a whole, 1.1bn tourism day visits within Great Britain were made. While this shows a healthy recovery from the pandemic, the number of trips remains below pre-pandemic levels. In 2019 there were 1.65bn domestic tourism day visits, meaning as of last year, visits only recovered to 67% of pre-pandemic levels.

Although these statistic should be treated with caution as there were still restrictions in place for the first quarter of 2022, it can still be argued that there is a long way to go before the sector can recover entirely.

Visitor spend

The 1.1bn visitors in 2022 spent a total of £45bn. Again, this shows recovery was not at pre-pandemic levels with total spend in 2019 of £67 billion. However, for the period April-December 2022, there was a 46% rise in spending compared to the previous year.

The average visitor spend went up by £1, from £40 to £41 (2%). With the cost-of-living crisis and high inflation, we would expect in the next full year (2023) visitor spend increasing at a higher rate as the same trips begin to cost consumers more.

In all of 2022, taking a tourism day visit to a large city/town was the most popular main type of destination visited in Britain (45%). Around one quarter (26%) of visits were to a small town and just under one fifth (19%) were to the countryside.

Despite overall growth, recovery in each quarter of 2022 varied significantly by type of destination. Tourism day visit spend grew in each quarter of 2022 against 2021 baselines for large cities/towns, small towns and the countryside. However spend in seaside or other coastal destinations fell from the 2021 baselines in quarters three (-10%) and four (-20%).

This could indicate that as overseas travel was more likely in 2022, fewer day trips were made to British coastal resorts. Growth in all destinations slowed significantly in the latter quarters of 2022, indicating that while the recovery trend in most destinations is still going upwards, the rate is stalling and recovery to pre-pandemic levels will take longer.

Wales/England variations

Recovery in Wales has been slower. In England the number of visits grew by 41% from 2021 to 2022 (April-December), however growth for the same period in Wales was only 34%. Total visitor spend recovery in Wales is healthier with 44% growth, although growth in England is still higher at 47% (April-December, 2021 to 2022).

Conclusions

We still do not have the data to fully assess the impact of Covid on the visitor economy as we are yet to have a full year of data with no Covid restrictions impacting visitor behaviour. Yet, the data from Visit Britain suggests growth is slowing, and we are years away from returning to pre-pandemic levels.

We are also yet to see the full impact of the cost-of-living crisis and inflationary pressures on the tourism industry. While there may be some favourable outcomes for tourism day visits as it becomes more expensive to go abroad (underlining the staycation trend), many households are experiencing having less disposable income that will inevitably have an overall negative impact on leisure spending. Something to consider for CLA members with rural businesses within the sector.

Money, where to get help, and when and where to tip

You’ll find plenty of useful information here including what plug adaptor to bring, where to exchange money to useful numbers to use in an emergency.

Currency - Sterling: Notes, pounds and pence

Britain’s national currency is pound sterling (symbol: £), which is sub-divided into 100 pence (symbol: p). Notes come in denominations of £50, £20, £10 and £5, and coins in £2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p.

Where to get your money

You can get British currency in banks, travel agents, post offices and bureaux de change (found on high streets, airports and at major railway stations).

Rates of exchange vary at different bureaux de change so it’s always worth shopping around. Travelex have branches throughout Britain, while Marks & Spencer (a popular department stores in Britain) has bureaux de change in over 100 of its stores. Many Post Offices also offer bureaux de change services.

Scotland and Northern Ireland issue their own pound sterling notes – they look different but have the same value as English notes. You can use English and Scottish money (apart from the Scottish £1 note) anywhere in the UK, but Northern Irish cash can only be used in Northern Ireland.

When and where to tip

Tipping is not expected in Britain like it is in some other countries. Workers do not have to rely on tips to live and all staff must be paid at least the National Minimum Wage. It’s not necessary to tip but it’s polite to do so if you’ve had good service, and it’s always appreciated.

It’s normal to tip taxi drivers and it’s customary to round the fare up to the nearest pound. If you choose to tip your taxi driver, a 10-15 percent tip is a nice gesture.

In restaurants, an optional service charge is sometimes added to your total bill (this will be noted on your bill). You can choose whether to pay it or not. If nothing is added and you are happy with the service, a standard tip of between 10-15 is well received.

In hotels, if a porter takes luggage to your room for you, it is customary to tip them approximately £2. If you order room service during your stay, you can leave a tip at your own discretion.

If you are in any doubt, a tip around of 10 percent is always be appreciated.

Credit, debit and contactless payment cards are widely used throughout Britain. Visa and Mastercard are the most common type, while American Express and Diners Club are only sometimes accepted.

Some small shops, markets and cafes may not accept card payments or may stipulate a minimum spend. Accepted cards are usually displayed in the windows so check first, or ask the owner whether they take card payments, beforehand.

Cash points

You can withdraw cash from ATM (automatic teller machines) commonly called ‘cash points’ from all over Britain and Northern Ireland. Almost every bank has a cash machine while many more can be found in supermarkets, petrol stations, train stations and high streets. Some charge a small fee for cash withdrawals. You should note that foreign cards will incur a currency exchange fee to withdraw money. Check with your bank for details before you travel.

As a security measure, let your bank know you are travelling overseas.

If you run out of funds, it’s possible to have money wired from your country to the nearest British bank. Branches of Travelex and American Express will also do this for you. North American visitors can get cash dispatched through Western Union to a bank or Post Office - you’ll need your passport as proof of identity.

During the winter months (between late October and late March), Britain operates on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is around five hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time and 10 hours behind Sydney.

During the summer months, the clocks go forward one hour to British Summer Time (BST).

You can normally find the time easily enough, but if you’re really caught short, then you can dial  the Speaking Clock on 123 (but there’s usually a charge for this).

Shop opening hours

Opening hours can vary depending on the attraction, shop or restaurant you want to visit, however many businesses are open between the core hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. You can usually find details of opening times on the website of each business. Larger cities tend to have later closing times and more staff than smaller places. And Sunday opening hours are reduced to six hours for shops, usually between 10 and and 6pm.

On public holidays, also known as bank holidays, banks, offices and some shops, restaurants and attractions close, and transport services are limited. Check to see if there are any public holidays planned before you begin your holiday – there tends to be all sorts of fun events lined up for this time all over Britain for you to enjoy.

Phone and internet access

Public telephones.

While many of the iconic red telephone boxes are no longer in use, there are still some public telephones you can use across Britain. You can locate one using the Yell website . You can pay for calls using coins or a bank card, and the minimum cost is 60p.

Internet and WiFi

Most towns and cities offer some form of public access to the internet, whether that’s hotel WiFi or complimentary internet access at a café. WiFi is often available at libraries, pubs, museums and even during some longer-distance train journeys.

Mobile networks

Britain and Northern Ireland uses the 900 or 1800 GSM system, so visitors from the United States (where the system is 800 or 1900 MHz band) will need to get a tri or quad-band set. Contact your service provider for more details.

Depending on your network provider, you may be charged for the calls you make and receive, as well as any texts you send and internet you use. It’s perhaps easier and cheaper buy a British SIM card and top it up with credit. This will allow you to use the local mobile networks, though you can only do this if your phone is not locked to a specific network.

Health and security

Emergency numbers.

Dial 999 to reach the police, fire and ambulance departments in an emergency. Along coastal areas, this number will also put you in touch with Britain’s coastguard rescue service, the RNLI. Use 101 when you need to contact the police for matters that do not require an immediate response, for example your car has been stolen or you’d like to give information about a crime you have witnessed. If you would like advice on minor injuries and illnesses that aren’t life threatening, call 111, the national non-emergency medical number - there is usually a bit of a wait for a call back.

Police men and women (affectionately called bobbies) were once a common sight patrolling the streets, but less so now. They can deal with anti-social behaviour, provide directions, and information.

You can find often police stations in cities, towns and some villages.

Pharmacists in Britain are highly trained professionals who can offer advice on minor ailments and well-being as well as dispense medication where necessary.

You can find pharmacies all around Britain and Northern Ireland, including well-known brands including brands like Boots and Lloyds Pharmacy . You can also buy over-the-counter drugs as well as other healthcare and beauty products.

What to bring

Plug sockets/adaptors.

The voltage in Britain is 220/240 AC, 50Hz and electrical plugs (plug type G) have three rectangular pins and take fuses of 3, 5, and 13 amps. For any electrical equipment brought into Britain, you’ll probably need an adaptor.  Most hotels will have two-pronged European-style sockets for shavers only.

Translation apps

If you’re not fluent in English, it might be worth making sure you have a translation app on your phone. These handy apps can translate words and phrases using text, voice commands and can even translate text in photographs. Newer Apple devices come with a Translate app as standard, while Android users can download Google Translate .

What to wear

The weather in Britain can be quite temperamental, so no matter what time of year you visit, it’s a good idea to bring something warm. It’s also worth packing a waterproof jacket – it can rain a lot in some locations. If you’re planning to do a lot of walking or hiking, a good, sturdy pair of walking shoes is an essential piece of kit.

Travelling with pets

With over 50% of households owning pets, Britain and Northern Ireland is very pet friendly.

You can bring your pet cats and dogs on holiday with you to Britain if they have been microchipped, have a pet passport or health certificate and are vaccinated against rabies. The rules are different for other animals. You can find out more about bringing pets to Britain on the GOV.UK website .

Bringing goods into UK Customs

You can bring some goods into Britain without having to pay tax or duty, if they’re for your own use or you’re planning to give them as a gift. Others you will have to ‘declare’ at the airport. You can find more on the GOV.UK website .

Studying in the UK

There are an abundance of study options in the UK.  Study UK helps to provide you with practical information, scholarship and funding options as well as advice about moving to the UK.

Report highlights

Domestic overnight trips in 2023:

The current data show a decline in 2023 overnight trips by 7% for both Great Britain and England.

These declines seem to be driven by holiday trips, which dropped by 14% and represent the second largest share of trips (32% in Britain and 31% in England).

On the other hand, UK overnight stays as part of an overseas trip show an increase of 14% in Britain and 19% in England (in line with an increase in outbound trips) .

In 2023, a city or large town was a destination type with the largest share, 44% in Britain and 45% in England.

45% of overnight trips in Britain / England included serviced accommodation.

In the below report, you can find figures for Great Britain and further details on  regions visited and trip characteristics (incl. trip purpose, main destination type and accommodation used).
