”IVHQ is, by far, the best volunteer program I have tried. You will feel like your projects are important and truly impact the community. The coordinators are fantastic and make you feel safe and comfortable, like you're part of the family. I know that I will continue volunteering with IVHQ in the future! I loved the structure of the program. We were able to work in the morning (which I loved) and after lunch we were free to explore the city. Volunteer Work in South America

South America is the continent of superlatives. It has the world’s biggest rainforest, the largest river, the highest mountain range outside of Asia as well as remote islands, heavenly beaches, wide deserts, icy landscapes and many, many more places. Furthermore, it is known for its fascinating ancient cultures and cultural heritages such as the Machu Picchu. It’s a melting pot of different cultures, landscapes, and biodiversity. So it is no wonder that South America has always fascinated you and that traveling and volunteering on this continent are on your bucket list! Let's take a closer look at the different fields of volunteer work in South America. Find out their characteristics, read interesting facts and learn more about some of the most important volunteering areas the different countries need support in.

What makes this continent particularly interesting for volunteers is the variety of volunteering projects you can join:

  • helping projects with wildlife conservation
  • protecting the nature and environment
  • getting involved in marine conservation projects
  • teaching children
  • working for a healthcare project
  • supporting community projects

This guide will give you an overview of the variety of volunteer opportunities in South America. Once you find the right project and get busy planning your stay, make sure to plan in some time to explore South America’s breath-taking nature and landscapes as well as its cultural particularities. South America is a mix of cultures and it celebrates all of them. From small villages to big countries such as Brazil, Peru, or Argentina - it is definitely a great place to visit as a volunteer!

Volunteer work in South America

To help you decide which of the many volunteer projects in South America is the right one for you, we will show you in more detail what areas of work there are and what kind of tasks you would have as a volunteer in South America . Teaching children, helping to protect the wildlife or getting involved in conservation efforts and community support, are all great volunteer opportunities in South America that require and demand different skills and will challenge you in different ways. Depending on where your interest lies and what skills you have, we can definitely help find the perfect program for you!

Support a wildlife conservation

Whether you help to take care of wildlife rescued animals from illegal traffickers, to assist with general maintenance tasks to prepare food for animals at a jungle sanctuary or whether you volunteer in South America's rainforests by climbing trees with capuchin monkeys and walking with feral cats, your helping hand is appreciated wherever you go .

Volunteering with wildlife includes but is not limited to:

  • feeding, cleaning, caring for animals
  • monitoring and documenting feeding behavioral habits
  • construction: maintaining the facilities and building additional ones
  • working on enrichment projects for animals
  • working at an animal refugee center
  • helping nurture sick animals back to health

Some wild animals you might get to work with when volunteering in South America, either in the wild or at a sanctuary, will be:

  • birds such as parrots
  • street animals such as cats and dogs
  • wildcats such as jaguars, ocelots, and cougars
  • small animals such as badgers, wild turkeys, tayras, honey bears

Marine life volunteer work in South America

Of course, not only the animals on land need protection and help from volunteers, but also those who live in the water. South America has a great variety of marine life, including many different species. However, the most common marine animal that needs your helping hand is the sea turtle .

As a volunteer in South America, your work with marine life might include but is not limited to:

  • working at a native plants nursery
  • feeding animals
  • tracking and monitoring animals
  • organizing campaigns with communities and children
  • monitoring whales
  • sighting and observing sea turtles
  • monitoring of amateur and artisanal fishing
  • field sampling
  • statistical analysis
  • coordinating small research projects
  • undertaking environmental education activities
  • counting eggs and tagging nest

By being a marine life volunteer in South America , you can get the best of both worlds - living in a country such as Brazil or Ecuador and volunteering out on the sea, getting hands-on to assist in research and conservation efforts .

Volunteer for biodiversity and its conservation

In addition to the great number of animals discovered each year, there is also a new species of plants discovered almost every other day! South America offers a great diversity of natural phenomena and is perfect for volunteers to discover, document and eventually take care of them .

The 5 most important environmental challenges South America is facing at the moment are:

  • deforestation
  • air pollution
  • water pollution
  • industrial pollution

Due to deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, planting new trees and preparing the land for plantation are increasingly important tasks. As a volunteer in South America, you could be helping to reforest the lands, prepare seedlings and register reforestation data to keep track of the improvements made. Volunteer opportunities in South America are endless in regard to environmental projects . Whether you want to support agriculture , conservation work , or energy and water projects , there will definitely be a project that suits your interests.

If you want to help preserve South America’s natural wonders and enjoy the outdoors, one of the environmental volunteer opportunities in South America will be a great experience for you. Volunteer work in South America on environmental projects can help local people address these issues and protect some of South America’s most precious natural spaces.

Medical and healthcare projects

Joining any medical volunteer project in South America is a great way to do something meaningful while learning a lot for your own career at the same time. You will gain a lot of experience in healthcare in a very different work environment . Depending on your knowledge and qualification, your medical volunteer work in South America can range from working closely with the patients and giving them important information to assisting the staff within the clinic or shadowing doctors.

While you might think medical volunteer opportunities in South America are only suitable for trained doctors and nurses, there are ways for untrained and unskilled volunteers to help as well!

If you are a trained doctor, nurse, medical student or pre-med, you will be able to get hands-on and support the doctors in hospitals, small clinics, and health centers . Some of the areas where specialized help is needed are:

  • general surgery
  • child health
  • adolescent health

If you are not a trained professional, there are still many ways and projects for you to help. Support the administrative staff in hospitals and clinics, educate locals about hygiene, illness prevention, nutrition and many other topics . From Peru, Argentina and Ecuador to Bolivia, help is needed in many different locations.

Support community services

If you want to immerse yourself in the culture and get in touch with the locals during your volunteer work in South America , a community program is a perfect opportunity. Community work calls for open, outgoing and empathetic volunteers that aren’t afraid of getting involved and can face difficult realities.

Depending on what your skills and qualifications are, there is a great number of possibilities to help in community development programs as a volunteer in South America. Some of these volunteering projects include:

  • assisting in advocacy for human rights
  • organizing cultural events
  • leading workshops
  • supporting women’s empowerment
  • raising awareness of human rights
  • helping people that are suffering from issues with domestic violence
  • renovating community building, houses, and schools
  • supporting construction activities
  • providing assistance for elderly people
  • caring for children
  • helping out at an orphanage

Before you decide to volunteer at an orphanage or a women shelter , make sure you are prepared for your task and understand what to expect . While working with orphans might sound noble at first, it is important to realize that more than 80% of children living in orphanages are not orphans. They are separated from their families because they are poor, disabled, from an ethnic minority or because they are suffering from other exclusion factors.

Many of the children and women you will be working with have experienced violence or abuse and are traumatized. For this reason, it is essential that volunteers MUST have appropriate skills . If not, you could be putting yourself and the people you work with at risk. Therefore, if you wish to volunteer in South America at one of the orphanage programs or women shelters you should meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • experience in working with traumatized clients
  • training as a child caretaker
  • training as a psychologist
  • training as a social worker

Education in South America

Poor education, failing the required academic standards, and lack of self-confidence lead to unemployment, hostility, and poverty. Providing quality education for children and empowering young people is the first step to end these problems and pave the way towards a better future for the next generations.

As a volunteer in South America in the field of education, your tasks would include but are not limited to:

  • teaching English, French or German to children
  • supporting sports projects
  • working as a literacy ambassador in libraries in rural communities
  • supporting elementary schools
  • creating challenging and dynamic literacy lessons
  • helping children with homework
  • organizing fun activities and games to maintain a balance between learning and relaxing

If you are especially interested in educational programs and want to support children and young adults with your volunteering efforts, there are many projects available in countries such as Ecuador , Peru , Argentina , Brazil , Colombia , Bolivia , and Chile .

Things to know before volunteering in South America

Before starting your volunteer work in South America, it’s important to think about the cultural norms you’ll need to adjust to . In addition, learn about the precautions you might need to take when volunteering abroad . The following list might help you with that:

Safety & precautions

Before you leave on your volunteer trip to South America, make sure to read up on the safety advice your government gives for tourists in the specific country you are planning on visiting. Most South American countries are perfectly safe, however, it is important to use common sense at all times and be aware of the current political situation .

Here are some universal tips you might want to follow during your volunteer work in South America:

  • Keep your personal belongings and important travel documents with you at all times! It also makes sense to bring attested photocopies of these documents, in case you lose them!
  • If you are going out, do not take a lot of money, jewelry or other fancy possessions with you. Take only the money you will need and leave everything else back home!
  • Do not use unregistered taxis! Doing so increases the risk of becoming a victim of a crime.

Health advice

It is annoying to get sick when traveling and volunteering abroad. Here are some basic precautions you can take to avoid it:

  • Get all proper vaccinations a few weeks before any volunteer trips to South America. Find out which vaccinations you need in which South American country on the website of the US-based health protection agency CDC .
  • Plan for how you will get healthcare during your stay. Get a travel insurance and bring medicine with you, especially if you need special medication.
  • Protect yourself from mosquitoes , as they can carry diseases such as dengue fever. If you suspect you have dengue fever, seek out medical advice. There is no vaccine. The cornerstone of prevention is protection against insect bites.

Who can volunteer in South America?

As you will have noticed by now, there are many volunteer opportunities in South America that expect different skills and abilities from their volunteers . While you can find out the specific requirements for each project on their program page, here are some general requirements that apply to most volunteer opportunities in South America:

  • You need to be at least 18 years old for most of the volunteer projects abroad. When in doubt, we advise you to get in contact with the local project manager, as in some projects you can also volunteer when you're 16 years old .
  • You need to have basic Spanish and English skills to join a volunteer project in South America. Please note that some teaching projects might ask for more advanced skills though.
  • Depending on the project you're interested in, you might need to provide a criminal background check and a health declaration before volunteering.

How to volunteer in South America

So you’re ready to volunteer in South America but you’re not quite sure how to get started ? Take a look at the following 3 steps that will prepare you for your volunteer work in South America and an unforgettable adventure abroad:

  • Check whether there’s a match between you and the project by looking at their requirements.
  • Take a look at the location of the project and decide whether it would be a location you are excited about.
  • Get in touch with the organization and see whether your expectations and your schedule match up.

Once this is sorted. Let’s take a look at the practical steps:

Insurance (Health & travel)

  • We recommend getting both health and travel insurance to all our volunteers. In fact, this is even a requirement for most programs abroad. Get in touch with your program contact person to find out if an insurance plan is already in place for volunteers.

Visa, passport, and documentation

  • Look into the visa requirements for the country you will volunteer in.
  • Make sure you have a valid passport considering the requirement of the host country.
  • Prepare the correct documents to fulfill the visa application .

And that’s it! You’re ready to volunteer in South America and fall in love with the nature, the people and the incomparable mix of tradition and modernity.

Ready to volunteer overseas, but unsure where to start? Well, it’s simple! Just follow these steps to turn your dreams into a reality:

  • Think about the voluntary work in South America you’d prefer to do, whether that’s educating young children, rehabilitating wild animals in the Amazon Rainforest, or medical volunteering. If you have your heart set on a particular country, then choose your favorite from the projects we offer in that destination.
  • Reach out to our Project Experts, who can provide more information and help you make the right choice according to your interests and goals.
  • Decide how much time you have to travel to a South American country, how flexible your dates are, and if you’d rather travel solo or as part of a group. This will determine what kind of trip is right for you, whether that's an independent Flexi Trip , Team Trip , or a High School Special .
  • Once you know which country you want to visit, what type of work you’d like to be doing, and the length you wish to travel for, there’s nothing left to do but fill in the application form and book your place!

Best places to volunteer in South America

Where you choose to go influences the type of work that you’re able to do. In South America, we run volunteer programs and internships in:

Each country offers something slightly different, whether it’s the culture, scenery, or the social issues your program focuses on. For example, you can explore fascinating ancient Incan ruins on our Archaeology Project in Peru. Likewise, the amazing biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands is one of Ecuador’s extraordinarily unique features. In Argentina, you can learn about equine therapy and the impact it has on children with disabilities.

South America faces many challenges today. Social inequality, limited access to healthcare in rural, disadvantaged communities, and habitat loss are some of the major issues. Think about where you want to use your time and energy, and help us provide sustainable solutions in local communities.

Summer Volunteer Programs in South America

Our South America volunteer trips run year-round, but summer has proven the most popular time to volunteer for high school and college students. If you have a more flexible schedule, and can take the time to volunteer outside the summer months, we encourage you to do so! There are some special projects, like our teacher training program in Peru, that only run in the winter.

Interested in summer medical volunteer opportunities in South America? High school students can travel to Argentina or Peru, and spend their break learning directly from experienced doctors, and practising basic medical skills like measuring blood pressure levels. Pre-meds and medical students can study general medicine in the same countries, but can choose from a wider range of programs, including:

Scroll to the bottom of the page for a complete list of the volunteer opportunities in South America that we offer in summer (all of our fixed-date programs - like High School Specials or Team Trips - have summer dates).

Can I volunteer in South America for free?

People often ask us if they can volunteer in South America for free. As we’re an organization that doesn’t depend on external or government funding, free volunteering isn’t something we offer. We rely on the fees that participants pay, and this guarantees that we can:

  • Ensure the highest levels of safety, along with 24/7 staff support.
  • Provide a hassle-free experience by dealing with all the logistics from the moment you apply.
  • Commit to long term, sustainable development, regardless of whether we have volunteers present year-round.

Read more about why volunteering abroad for free isn’t always a good idea .

The cost of volunteer work in South America depends on where you go, what you do, and how long you volunteer for. But it’s probably not as much as you think. Especially when you consider that our program fees include:

  • Three meals a day
  • Accommodation
  • A full project
  • Transportation to and from your placement

Plus, the longer you stay, the lower the cost per week!

You can also take advantage of our flexible payment plans . We understand that paying in one go isn’t always possible, so we just ask for an initial deposit and then you can pay as much or as little as you like in a series of small installments. Volunteering in South America

Volunteer programs in south america.

Volunteering in South America with Love Volunteers is piece of mind that you are participating on responsible volunteer programs in South American countries focused on both the volunteer experience and the long-term benefits for local communities.  With affordable volunteer programs in South America’s most popular destinations of Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina we provide the unique opportunity of safe and meaningful travel in this diverse and culture rich region. Available year round from as little as one week our short-term volunteer programs in South America offer the best possible experience. Explore the many volunteering programs in South America with Love Volunteers and let the adventure begin.

Argentina is a country rich in culture and passion - but has poor standards of social inequality and housing for its most vulnerable communities. In partnership with a local NGO, Love Volunteers' offer programs that aim to address these issues and improve the lives of the country's poorest residents.

Based in the capital city of Buenos Aires, volunteers have the opportunity to soak up the Argentine vibe. From streets teeming with cafes and restaurants to sprawling parks vibrant with natural colour.  History abounds as does art and culture.  This metropolitan city has something for everyone.

From the sub-tropical north to the sub Antarctic tip, extensive coastline and lush Pampas plains, the deserts of Patagonia and the glaciers and waterfalls of the deep south. Argentina is a stunning destination!

Join us and our local partner in supporting the marginalised communities in Buenos Aires and enjoy the best of South America.

Programs in Rio are currently only available to groups.  Contact us if you are interested in a group (4+) program in Brazil.

Love Volunteers and our Brazilian partner need assistance with a variety of programs in Rio de Janiero and surrounding areas. Our programs aim to help disadvantaged Brazilians escape poverty and learn valuable life skills that will equip them with the knowledge and resources to provide for their families and learn skills otherwise unavailable to them. Volunteers in Brazil can choose from a range of amazing programs including childcare, teaching, construction, sports and the arts. Not only will your efforts help change the lives of locals in need, volunteers will also be able to experience the famously warm Brazilian culture first-hand.

Brazil is the giant of South America!  Covering roughly half of the entire South American continent and home to well over 200 million people it's not hard to imagine the vast array of experiences awaiting visitors. In terms of natural draw-cards the thousands of miles of sun-drenched coastline offer a blissful escape for tourists and locals alike.  In the North the Amazon Basin, covering a staggering 40% of the country and home to the famous Amazon Rainforest and mighty Amazon River, are not only ecological wonders but stunningly beautiful. The Southern states border neighbouring Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay and include the fertile plains of Rio Grande do Sul with its vineyards and the astounding Iguacu Falls, which have to be seen to be believed.

Unlike all other Latin American countries, the official language in Brazil is Portuguese.  While most of South America was colonised by Spanish conquistadors, Brazil owes its history to Portuguese settlers who began to arrive in the 1500s and retained governance until independence in 1822.  Many of the colonial villages have been perfectly preserved to this day.

Our programs are based in Rio de Janeiro on the south eastern coast. Symbolised by the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer on Sugarloaf Mountain and world renowned for its eponymous carnival, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches and the passion of its locals, Rio is culture at its richest and best!

Rio enjoys a tropical climate making it a year-round destination. Even in the winter months (June, July, August) temperatures area a pleasant 70ºF.  Volunteering in Rio is an unique and fulfilling experience volunteers will never forget!

Love Volunteers is looking for volunteers to provide support in many areas of Ecuador. Our volunteering options include teaching English, working directly with disadvantaged children and women, assisting in hospitals and day centres, as well as volunteering on environmental and animal welfare projects in the Amazon. Volunteers’ efforts will make a positive impact on the lives of people for whom poverty is a daily reality.

We find that many volunteers on programs here appreciated just how much of a difference their help could make, and that the locals were very willing to welcome these relative strangers into their world. South American culture is steeped in history and Ecuador is a highly individual country where visitors will encounter amazing friendliness.

Supporting Ecuadorian communities requires volunteers to make use of your their resourcefulness – their wisdom, judgement and sense of humour. Many people feel that they become a better person as a result of their experiences as a volunteer.

Ecuador is a compact South American country known for its extraordinary natural diversity. It combines Andean vistas, tropical jungle and Pacific beaches. With a population of around 14 million, its people belong to a large spectrum of different ethnic groups, some speaking Quichua, an Inca language.

Love Volunteers’ along with our partner in Peru urgently need volunteers for the many programs in Cusco and surrounding areas. We offer the chance to teach, work with children and the disabled, undertake medical placements, and support women’s groups, as well as a number of other programs. The efforts of our volunteers in Peru have been seen to drastically improve the lives of people in the local communities.

Anyone willing to  volunteer in Peru can be sure that their skills and expertise will be put to good use. The satisfaction and fulfillment that this can give a volunteer is not something that one often gets from a job or internship. Volunteering overseas - particularly in a challenging environment - is an experience you will look back on with pride.

Through living and working in Peru volunteers can gain insight into this fascinating South American country. They will get to interact with other international volunteers, and with the community that they are serving on a day-to-day basis. It is likely that they will meet people whose experiences of life may challenge their assumptions and values. With volunteers in Peru coming from many walks of life and generations, it is often a way of forging new and lasting friendships.

Volunteering in Cusco, besides being culturally stimulating, also provides an excellent opportunity to improve one’s Spanish.

Colombia is a richly diverse country at the northern tip of South America. Its geography is stunningly varied, categorised by the Andes mountain range, Amazon Rainforest and Los Llanos plains in the south and Pacific and Caribbean coastlines in the north.  Lying on the equator and with incredible variance in altitude the climate in Colombia is tropical along the coast, eastern plains and Amazon and cold in the highlands with periodic droughts. Lacking the usual seasons, Colombians normally refer to rainy seasons as winter—but the differences in terrain and altitude mean the rainy seasons are different in every corner of the country!

Colombia strongly reflects its history as a colony of Spain. It is often referred to as the most Roman Catholic of the South American countries and most of its people are proud of the relative purity of their Spanish language. Its population is heavily mestizo (of mixed European and Indian descent) with substantial minorities of European and African ancestry. Civilised since ancient times the country has a wealth of culture and history which is immediately evident in the charming city of Cartagena, where our volunteers are based.

Cartagena, known as the 'Jewel of the Caribbean', is a stunning home away from home for our volunteers in Colombia.  The charm of this city lies in its Unesco World Heritage listed 'Old Town', framed by miles of impessive colonial stone walls.  Soaking up the atmosphere walking the quaint cobbled streets or the beach scene on a promenade, relaxing with a drink at one of the many bars and restaurants or enjoying the myriad festivals and cultural events on offer; visitors to the city can't help but fall in love.

From the safe and comfortable base of host family, volunteers reach out into the poorer areas which comprise 95% of the city.  What an incredible location in which to give your time as a volunteer!

Volunteering in South America is an opportunity for you to combine your personal interests with practical experience in a professional field. Whether you want to get a feel for what a career in teaching might be like, develop your knowledge of wildlife conservation, or apply theoretical medical skills in real-life scenarios, GoEco’s volunteer programs in South America offer outstanding training and support. Most projects require at least a basic level of Spanish, so make sure you take some lessons or brush up on common phrases before you go.

Wildlife and environmental conservation

South America’s abundance of wildlife means there are plenty of opportunities for animal lovers to help protect vulnerable species. Areas of biodiversity, like the Galápagos Islands or the Amazon rainforest, face threats such as deforestation and pollution. Lend a hand in projects that focus on ecological conservation and you’ll learn how to carry out tasks such as biodiversity research and wildlife monitoring. Sanctuaries for rescued or endangered animals also offer placements for volunteers, giving you the chance to get involved in hands-on wildlife care .

Volunteering with children

Volunteers can help to support education in vulnerable communities in South America, facilitating cultural exchange and teaching useful skills such as English. Volunteers can be a valuable resource for education centers in lower-income areas, which often struggle with a lack of resources and classes with high numbers of students. As a volunteer you could assist at a kindergarten in Peru , helping children to learn through fun and interactive games. Or, teach art to children in Rio and undertake projects to beautify communities. Or perhaps help to provide childcare in the favelas of Rio.

Teaching English

Develop your teaching skills and gain practical experience by volunteering with local children in Argentina or Peru. You’ll assist with lesson planning and leading conversation classes, to give children the opportunity to practice their English skills in real-life.

Health science, nursing, or pre-med students can gain practical experience on medical and healthcare placements in Peru . This is a great way to get exposure in the field, while learning additional skills such as Spanish, and enjoying life abroad.

South America is a continent of superlatives – it has the world’s biggest rainforest and the largest river (Amazon), the highest mountain range outside Asia (the Andes), the world’s highest waterfall (the 979m Angel Falls in Venezuela) and one of the world’s largest waterfalls too (Iguaçu Falls on the border of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay). Last, but not least, it has the world’s southernmost city: Ushuaia.

It’s also a continent of contrasts: from teeming, multitudinous cities such as Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, to the remote Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, and from the hot, dry Atacama desert, to the icy landscapes of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. Nestled between the Caribbean, the South Pacific, and the South Atlantic oceans, it has a wealth of beaches, from perfect calm tropical paradises to stunning surf spots.

But there’s no getting away from it – it’s a big continent, with 5 time zones as you cross the country and measuring more than 7500 km from north to south. Any attempt at exploration will take time – so thank goodness for Workaway, and the many Workaway hosts based all over the continent! As a Workaway volunteer you can explore every country in South America in an affordable way, have an unforgettable summer or a unique gap year, do something meaningful, learn new skills, meet people and make friends for life.

Budget travel in South America

The countries of South America tend to be friendly places, and the tourist sector has been growing rapidly recently. Every country has its own charm, and there is no shortage of tourist attractions in South America, so you may have a hard time deciding which places you want to visit. But when it comes to budget, you don’t have to worry too much since travel on the continent is usually quite affordable. Volunteering with Workaway will bring down costs associated with accommodation and food of course, and between volunteering stints you can use some of the tips on travelling on a budget from seasoned Workawayers to help keep costs down.

Climate in South America

The sheer size of South America means climate can vary a lot from region to region. However tropical temperatures can be found over most of the continent – with the exception of Patagonia, the southernmost area of land shared between Argentina and Chile, where the climate is varied and sometimes extreme. And even further north, as soon as you get up high into the Andes, temperatures drop. For travellers from the Northern Hemisphere it is worth remembering that in South America summer lasts from November to February, and winter is from June to August. Research the weather in the area you plan to visit, and plan your packing well. Visit our Blog to get packing hacks and other advice and tips from seasoned Workawayers, and read on for more South-America specific help and hints.

South America’s huge diversity

The continent is made up of 12 countries of varying size. Brazil is home to more than half the population and covers about half the land area of the continent, and here Portuguese is spoken. The official language in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela is Spanish, although many indigenous languages are spoken too. In Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana English, Dutch and French are spoken respectively. These linguistic differences are the result of the different colonial histories of each country, but the land is also marked by traces of ancient civilizations, the indigenous peoples of the past and present, and of African slave communities, among others. These influences combine to create a thriving and varied modern culture.

When planning your trip, bear in mind that if it’s company you’re looking for, you should stick to the north and the coastal areas, especially the eastern part of the continent, where the majority of the population live. If you want rugged, empty landscapes to explore, go south and west. Beyond that basic advice, to help you plan your trip to South America here are a just a few ideas of places to go and things to do from the incredible number of options available. Choose your area to explore, and then browse the nearly 3500 Workaway hosts based all over the continent to find the perfect base for your trip.

Highlights of South America

Ancient and modern culture.

The ruins of ancient civilizations share the continent with world-class metropolises: check out Brasilia for outstanding modern architecture, Buenos Aires for European architecture, Cuzco for its genuine indigenous culture, Rio for its strong African influence, São Paolo for its huge Japanese community, and pretty much everywhere for the traces of the Iberian conquistadores.

A few highlights:

  • See the oldest rock paintings in the Americas in the Serra da Capivara.
  • When it comes to indigenous culture, the Inca sites such as Sacsayhuaman and Machu Picchu are certainly among the highlights, and Chile’s remote Easter Island is home to one of the archaeological wonders of South America: “Moai”, the giant stone heads carved from local volcanic rock which are dramatic and striking relics from centuries ago.
  • The Colonial era had a prominent influence on South America’s architecture, as you will find in cities like Santiago in Chile, Antigua in Guatemala, and Quito in Ecuador, and there are also amazing modern monuments and structures to see in South America. One of the most famous is the Christ Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • The Conquistadors brought the Catholic faith to South America and inspired some fantastic churches and cathedrals. Santuario de Las Lajas, in Colombia is a Northern European style neo-gothic church that was built over a river gorge on a mountain slope with a narrow stream flowing underneath. The old city of Cartagena is home to some wonderful homes and public buildings along with the churches.
  • From the Argentine Gaucho to the Andean Shaman, you’ll have a chance to experience very different cultures anywhere you go in South America. Visit the genuine indigenous communities of Belém, Manaus, Cuzco, Lima, La Paz.

Wild nature and spectacular scenery

South America boasts over 100 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, like the Iguaçu National Park in Brazil, the Galapagos Islands, Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, and Machu Picchu in Peru – but there is still so much yet to be discovered. With millions of miles of Amazonian rainforest and hundreds of islands, many of these places have yet to be troubled by human presence, and this is part of what makes South America such a mysterious, yet fascinating continent.

  • When it comes to amazing wildlife, nowhere is better than the tropical Amazon basin, where there are over 1,400 species of mammal, including jaguars and ocelots, and over 1,500 species of birds. With an experienced guide it's possible to spot many of these animals, and there are also many animal reserves and conservation centres that can be visited.
  • The isolated Galapagos Islands rank high on many a bucket list. Their separation from the rest of the world gave rise to the evolutionary distinctiveness that led Darwin to develop his theory in ‘On the Origin of Species’, and scuba diving here reveals an amazing range of marine species. Other unique species like the blue-footed booby, the huge Galapagos tortoise and the marine iguana can all be spotted while hiking or exploring the coast by boat.
  • Known as the driest place in the world, the vast Atacama Desert is as beautiful as it is intimidating, and the Valley of the Moon in the Atacama Desert is a landscape that is hard to believe exists.
  • Visit the Uyuni salt flats in the Bolivian altiplano – after the rains you can gaze at the sky reflected in the mirror-like water for as far as the eye can see.
  • South America’s largest lake, Lake Titicaca, is also the highest navigable lake in the world. Nestled in the Andes between Peru and Bolivia, legend says it was the birthplace of the Sun.
  • South America’s mountain scenery is spectacular, and the Torres del Paine in Chile is just one highlight – here the steep slopes of the peaks soar like jagged teeth into the air. Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina is an icy World Heritage Site left over from the Quaternary period – watch as glaciers calve icebergs into the huge Lake Argentino.

Festivals and Dance

Talk of festivals in South America and the annual carnaval celebrations in Rio de Janeiro come immediately to mind. Over two million people flock to the city to join the party every year, and samba dancing and the wonderful music and parades with grand floats and dance troupes make for a spectacular climax to the event. But South America has lots of other festivals to offer, all featuring music and dancing and giving you plenty of opportunity to interact with locals.

  • Along with the party in Rio, Barranquilla in Colombia and the reggaeinfluenced celebrations in Salvador de Bahia are also great places to enjoy carnival.
  • Outside of carnival season, there are many other celebrations to enjoy in South America, such as the Inti Raymi festival. Held at an Inca site near the city of Cusco, this is an amazing festival of colour and music, which also celebrates the heritage of the indigenous culture of the region.
  • For those who love colour and horticulture, the charming Feria de las Flores in Colombia is another festival where local growers all compete to have their best blooms on show.
  • The Aymara New Year near the city of La Paz in Bolivia is another great event that provides a wonderful spectacle and a vibrant party where visitors can celebrate with the local people.
  • Medellin in Colombia is one of world’s salsa hubs, and once you have got a grip of the basics and learned the steps, you can venture out on to the floors of the local salsa clubs.
  • Buenos Aires is another great dancing destination, and while the city professionals may appear very straight when they are at work, the tango is their great passion, and there are several places throughout the city where you can enjoy public dance displays.

Beautiful beaches

Beaches are almost synonymous with holidays, and South America has plenty of them. You will find hip and happening party beaches, and quiet and less crowded beaches where you can just laze around and relax with your family… plus all the water sports to go with it.

  • Brazil has a wealth of beautiful beaches on offer, including Jericoacoara – or Jeri – located in a very out-of-the-way national park, with a huge dune famous for spectacular sunsets and the mystical ‘green flash’.
  • “Tall and tan, and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking....” Rio has more than a dozen beaches, large and small, but a walk along Ipanema with the lyrics of its famous song running through your head is a must.
  • Ecuador’s Montañita is a popular beach offering some of the most consistent surf in the country and an international crowd.
  • Punta del Diabolo is a backpacker hotspot in Uruguay that grew up around a fishing village. Although visitor numbers have steadily increased, many people still come here to camp amid the pine trees and sand dunes. To the south is Cabo Polonio, declared a national park in 2009, which boasts an off-grid township, genuine wilderness, a sea lion colony and quiet beaches around its namesake lighthouse.
  • There are many beaches to explore north of the arty city of Valparaiso, Chile, but the prettiest and best preserved is Zapallar, in a horseshoe-shaped bay backed by wooded hills dotted with old mansions and upscale holiday homes.
  • Argentina’s warmest seas are off Buenos Aires province, with sandy beaches stretching across some 800 km of coastline, most backing on to the low-lying fields of the pampas. Cariló, close to the resort town of Pinamar, is a rustic-looking but well-heeled designer pueblo of dunes and shady pines with most of the accommodation in small wooden houses.
  • Peru is usually associated with ancient ruins, beautiful colonial-era cities and, more recently, gastronomy. But it’s also a surfing hotspot and the 2,415 km Pacific seaboard boasts a string of good breaks and enticing beach resorts. Check out Máncora in the north, with its long, clean, sandy beaches, low-slung cabins and small hotels and excellent restaurants. There’s a lively kite and surfing scene, but the warm waters are often calm.
  • Colombia’s Caribbean coast ticks all the boxes – warm turquoise seas, hammocks and hummingbirds – and is still relatively undiscovered. Check out the beaches of the Tayrona National Park.

The 7 Best Websites For Volunteering For Free in South America

By Author Steph Dyson

Posted on Last updated: 6th October 2023

Type “find volunteering South America” into Google and it’ll bring up a list of over fourteen  million results.

Most of these sites will claim they’re offering you placements that will have a guaranteed deep and positive impact upon local communities.

But they’re also charging big bucks to put you in touch with organisations, money that I frankly refuse to pay as you never know exactly where that money will end up.

But volunteering for free in South America and making a difference along the way is possible, just a bit more difficult. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to websites where you can find free volunteering – all of which I have personally used.

A side note about volunteering for free in South America

However, bear in mind that “free volunteering” rarely means free. I refuse to pay administrative costs to large, international volunteering companies as I know that little of this money ends up going to the NGO or charity that you work with.

What I will pay, however, is for my own accommodation and food, unless I’m using a site where these are provided in return for manual labour.

Think about: the money that the charity needs to use to put you up in volunteer accommodation and to feed you three times a day is money that could go a lot further if it was being put into their work.

Volunteering For Free in South America

Given that the cost of living in most of South America is very cheap in comparison with the Western world, paying $10-$20 a day is something that most of us can easily afford.

For me personally, volunteering for free in South America means covering my own costs but not being required to pay a fee to an outside agency. However, there are some websites where it  is  possible to volunteer for free.

The best websites for free volunteering in South America

1.  workaway.

A budget backpacker’s favourite and always top of the list of places to find free volunteering in South America, Workaway is a site where hosts from across the world offer food and accommodation in return for between four and five hours of volunteering per day.

It’s a great way to spend anything from a week to a few months living with a host family, engaging in projects that often benefit the local people and living very economically.

Given that many hosts are located rurally, it’s also ideal for those hoping to pick up Spanish, as you quickly become part of a small community.

Both hosts and volunteers must write a profile so you know exactly who you’ll be working with, and there is also the expectation that you’ll swap reviews post-placement to evaluate your experience.

volunteering for free in South America

The numbers of hosts have shot up in recent years in even some of South America’s lesser-visited destinations ( Bolivia now offers 43 hosts), which means you have more choice and a greater range of locations to discover.

Given that so many volunteering opportunities these days expect you to pay a fee to the organisation to volunteer, Workaway is one of the few sites that guarantees you won’t be paying a penny.

The bottom line is Workaway is the only website that offers placements for volunteering for free in South America.

The Things to Consider:

Saying this, it costs USD$ 29.00 to register for a year and to actually be able to contact hosts. However, this really is a minimal fee if you plan on workawaying for even a few weeks per year.

Although the numbers of hosts are increasing, the types of volunteering that you have access to via Workaway is somewhat limited: placements working with animals or children are fairly difficult to find in a lot of countries.

I also know of people who’ve not had a great experience as they’ve been required to work far longer hours than they had initially thought. To avoid this, make sure that both you and your hosts’ expectations are clear before you begin.

2.  Helpx

Another site that operates upon the principle of free volunteering in South America, Helpx again offers placements where labour is in return for food and accommodation.

However, be aware that many of the projects being offered in South America on this site do require a contribution towards living costs. This is due to the low levels of income in some of the poorer countries.

Similar to Workaway, placements from Helpx range from farms to hostels to ranches, and all with the expectation that you work at least four hours per day.

Again, this is the perfect site for those on a tight budget and who are wishing to engage in a real cultural exchange, while feeling like they’re doing some good.

Helpx also relies on a system of reviews of hosts and helpers which should help to ensure that your experience is positive and you both meet the expectations that were set out before the placement.

Helpx is a smaller and lesser-known site than Workaway, and while some hosts are found on both sites, it’s definitely worth checking out each of them as there are placements unique to each.

A fee is required to become a ‘premium’ helper (which just means you can contact all hosts) of €20 for a ttwo-yearsubscription.

Plus don’t forget, as mentioned previously, it’s likely that you may be required to contribute towards food and accommodation .

The best websites for low-cost volunteering in South America

3.  volunteer south america.

A very comprehensive list dedicated specifically to opportunities for volunteering for free in South America, Volunteer South America’s aim is to help independently minded travellers find grassroots NGOs.

The site actively emphasises the importance of volunteers being as effective as possible, recommending that you do as much preparation beforehand : particularly in terms of studying Spanish, identifying your skill-set, learning about the regions you may want to visit and generally getting prepared to travel independently and adventurously.

I can only agree with these suggestions! Check out my other post about volunteering in South America for further advice in terms of finding projects and preparing to volunteer in this continent.

This site places real value on meaningful volunteering, while listing a good selection of volunteering positions in a wide range of countries. Each listing comes complete with a brief overview of the position and expectations of the role, plus a link to the project’s website.

The organisations are generally very small NGOs, often based in interesting South American locations, meaning that you are guaranteed to have a really rewarding and memorable experience and won’t pay the earth to do so.

As is pointed out on the site, volunteering for free in South America differs from paying through an agency in one significant way: the level of support that you will receive. I

f it’s your first time volunteering, you don’t have much knowledge of Spanish, or you generally would prefer to feel like there is someone looking out for you during your placement, then the opportunities listed on this site may not be for you.

That said, the programmes that I’ve worked with (which have all been arranged without going through an agency) have generally provided me with a certain degree of support anyway.

Added to this, the volunteering roles on Volunteer South America require you to cover living costs, so when it says ‘free’ it doesn’t necessarily mean this.

However, in my experience, these are the organisation where, if you come with relevant experience, you can have the greatest impact.

4.  Omprakash

Omprakash’s focus is on volunteering as a transformative experience, where people learn through their experiences and have the support of a volunteer community.

This website operates a vetting process for organisations before they can become “partners” and the projects that are advertised on Omprakash range from those where you must pay a fee to volunteer, to others where you are volunteering for free in South America and are just expected to cover living costs.

For the latter, estimated daily costs are given.

They have a grant scheme for “talented people with educational and empowering experiences of global citizenship” to help offset fees for volunteering.

volunteering for free in South America

Further to this, they seek to educate volunteers to better understand the communities in which they will be working, by offering their Education through Global Engagement (EdGE) programme . Fees are $750.

They have a database of former users of the site with whom you can connect to ask for advice, feedback on a project or just as a way of meeting other volunteers.

The range of projects listed on Omprakash are much smaller than on other, larger volunteer recruitment sites, however given that they have all been vetted, they should be more reliable and likely to lead to a meaningful volunteering placement.

5.  True Travellers

Working in a similar vein to Volunteer South American, True Travellers has a list of free or low-cost volunteering programmes in South America , each with direct links to the project’s website and a sentence describing the overall aim of the volunteering programme.

The list is split by country making it easy to navigate, with the information clear and accessible. This website also has an excellent list of resources and websites that are indispensable for planning your volunteering trip.

Like Volunteer South America, their focus is on offering valuable volunteering placements with organisations that are truly having an impact, and they do not believe in volunteers going through a large agency.

The list of free and low-cost placements currently only covers Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, and Peru, so if you want opportunities outside of these countries, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

6.  Go Abroad

The largest website on this list of opportunities for volunteering for free in South America, Go Abroad covers everything from volunteering to internships to language learning.

They have a huge database of volunteering opportunities, plus articles written by travellers and volunteers to give you first-hand experiences of selecting programmes and learning about what life is like living in certain countries.

All countries in South America are covered, with an enormous number of programmes available to from (there are 308 in Ecuador alone) and you can break down your search according to the type and length of volunteering placement that you want.

You can also look at opportunities in the whole of South America , just to see what catches your eye.

Projects normally provide a full package of support to volunteers (including in-country assistance, airport pick-ups and training) and volunteers can review their experiences on the website.

You are paying to volunteer and, although you are not paying to go through an agency (as Go Abroad doesn’t take commission), it might seem more expensive than going through some of the other sites.

That said, if you’ve had little experience of volunteering and want to venture into a new country you’ve never visited before, going through a site that offers more support may be a better idea.

7.  The NGO List

Another website with links to grassroots NGOs, The NGO List has listings of meaningful volunteering placements.

They have a number of NGOs which are “featured”, meaning they have an entire page dedicated to giving you detailed information and personal experiences about volunteering with that charity (check out the one I wrote for the charity BiblioWorks , the NGO with whom I volunteered in Sucre, Bolivia).

They list opportunities in South America by country and by field, which helps for when you’re trying to track down a specific type of volunteering.

Again, the range of countries offered is a little on the thin side, however they do ask that people get in contact if they have come across other deserving NGOS that ought to be on the list. The site also hasn’t been updated for a while (since July 2015) so there is no guarantee that the links are current.

Are there any other sites that you use and which provide user-friendly and accessible information for meaningful volunteering in South America? I’d love to hear about the sites you use and why they deserve to be added to this list.

Steph, thank you for sharing your South America volunteering experience. As a "want-to-be" ESL volunteer I found a lot of useful info and valuable suggestions. Hope it became my passion for the years to come. I recently received TEFL/TESOL certificate and want to try myself as a ESL teacher in Peru. What sites or organizations would you suggest me to contact first considering that I am limited to two weeks and would prefer 18+ audience?

Hi Michael, I don't think you'll find anyone who would accept a paid ESL teacher for a duration of two weeks. If you are looking to volunteer as an ESL teacher, you will need to check out minimum volunteering periods on the different websites - I don't know many off the top of my head that will want you volunteering for such a short period of time as it's not really in the organisation's interest to have someone for just two weeks, and often becomes a lot more work for them. I would seriously consider committing to longer (at least a couple of months), as this will give you more time to work out whether you enjoy the job and ensure that you have a real impact. Steph

Thank you for a great list. I must share that while they do try and vet, Omprakash does not do as good of a job as they could regarding their vetting process. I volunteered through another organization in Nepal and was placed with an organization that helped female survivors of human trafficking. I wrote a successful grant for them and they received 23 million npr from Booking.com; I agreed to return for 4 months and volunteer directly with the organization. After a couple of months of basically doing the directors job, I learned that the organization was corrupt and committing fraud. Most of the women/girls they help are not victims and falsify their case studies to receive services. This is quite normal for Nepal, corruption is rampant there and the authorities do very little to stop it. I spent my last month in Nepal reporting the organization to the US Embassy, Nepalese authorities and media. I have contacted Omprakash regarding this organization as well as another volunteer who informed them of the corruption in this organization, thus far Omprakash has not removed this organization from their list of volunteer opportunities. Very disappointing, but i am continuing to expose this organization and assure that they no longer fraud donors and supporters.

Corruption is a real thing, and there is so much of it in poorer countries. Moral to the story, do your own vetting before choosing an organization to volunteer with.

Tuesday 25th of February 2020

Hi Angela, thank you so much for sharing this story as it's really important to know that Omprakash aren't doing due diligence when it comes to vetting companies. I agree that people should vet via other means: trying to reach out to previous volunteers by asking the company for email addresses if possible is a good technique, as is asking for financial reports and other official information to prove how they are spending their money. I'll definitely keep an eye on Omprakash and I hope that they take down the organisation you worked with. Steph

Do you have any recommendations of places that where we could go volunteer with a family? We have 3 little- ish kids and would love a longer term (year ish??) opportunity. This post is awesome and gives me a lot of stuff to sift through - but thought I’d ask if you were aware of anything specific in all your travel and experience, etc. We’d be interested in doing anything. Building. Teaching. Orphanages. I am a physician assistant so health anything would also be awesome. Would love some additional insight if you’ve got it! Thanks!

Wednesday 22nd of January 2020

Hi Carissa, I can't think of any places offhand, so you'll just have to look through and find things that interest you and reach out to them. And please don't volunteer in an orphanage. There are SO MANY issues with orphanage tourism; you can read about why it's not something you should ever do here. Steph

how to travel and work in south america

South America is a continent of contrasts, from the bustling cities of Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro to the remote Galapagos Islands, and from the Atacama desert to the icy landscapes of Patagonia. With its diverse nature, vibrant culture, and affordable travel options, it's no wonder that South America is considered the holy grail for many travellers. For those looking to extend their stay and immerse themselves in local life, there are numerous work opportunities available, from teaching English and volunteering at orphanages to conservation work and busking. For those with artistic flair, there are artisan markets where you can sell your creations, and for a more stable source of income, there's always hostel or bar work. If you're looking to travel and work in South America, it's important to plan ahead, especially when it comes to visas and insurance. So, roll up your sleeves, pack your bags, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

What You'll Learn

Teaching english, working in orphanages, rainforest conservation, hostel or bar work, au pair work.

English teachers are in high demand in South America. As the number of tourists in the region increases, more and more people are hoping to learn English to communicate and work with expats and individuals overseas. There is a particular need for competent teachers in rural areas of countries such as Bolivia and Brazil, where poverty levels are high and education levels are consistently low.

English language schools are abundant in South America and are a great option for both experienced and novice teachers. Teachers can also find work in international schools, private language schools, and universities. Volunteering opportunities are also available, especially in Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador.

In terms of qualifications, a TEFL/TESOL certification is generally preferred, and some schools require teachers to be native English speakers. However, if you have a few years of solid teaching experience, you may still be considered for positions without a certification. It is also worth noting that South America is in the southern hemisphere, so the hiring season will be different from that of North America.

Salaries for English teachers in South America vary by country and range from $400 to $1,200 per month. While these salaries may not be as high as in other regions like Asia and the Middle East, the cost of living in South America is generally very affordable. Additionally, teaching in South America offers the opportunity to learn a new language, experience the local culture, and travel to incredible destinations like Machu Picchu and the Amazon rainforest.

You may want to see also

Orphanages in South America are filled with children who have been abandoned by their families for financial, social, or personal reasons. While some orphanages are unregistered and running illegally, there are plenty of organisations that do ethical work with the best intentions for the children. Volunteering in an orphanage can be a rewarding but challenging experience.

Requirements

Volunteering in an orphanage requires a minimum commitment of four weeks, with longer stays of three months or more encouraged. This is because children in orphanages struggle with attachment and fear of abandonment, so stability is important.

Volunteers must be experienced childcare professionals with a degree in psychology or extensive work experience with young children. A blank criminal record must also be submitted with the application.

What to Expect

As a volunteer in an orphanage, you will be supporting the main caretakers in their work. This may include:

  • Interacting and engaging with the children
  • Preparing activities to keep the children busy and entertained
  • Teaching English and other subjects
  • Playing outdoor games and sports
  • Helping with food preparation and caretaking of children

Choosing an Ethical Organisation

It is important to carefully choose an ethical organisation to volunteer with. Child exploitation is common in orphanage volunteer programs, and some organisations have been linked to child trafficking rings. Look for organisations that have the children's best interests at heart and are committed to providing improved care and support.

Understanding the Impact of Orphanages

It is important to recognise that most children in orphanages are not actually orphans, and that institutionalised care can have negative impacts on a child's development. Research has shown that children in orphanages are more vulnerable to trafficking, abuse, and exploitation, and face a higher risk of homelessness, mental health challenges, and suicide.

Therefore, it is crucial to consider alternative ways to support children and families, such as through programs that focus on keeping families together and addressing the underlying causes of poverty and inequality.

Do Detectives Travel for Work?

South America is home to the world's largest rainforest, the Amazon, which spans nine countries and 7 million square kilometres. The Amazon is not only the most extensive tropical forest on Earth but also the oldest and most biodiverse. It is home to more than 80,000 plant species, the highest density of plant species anywhere, and one in ten known species globally.

The Amazon is critical to the planet's stability, storing massive amounts of carbon and regulating rainfall patterns. However, it is under severe threat from deforestation, with 20% of the rainforest lost in the last 40 years, and an additional 20% at risk of destruction.

  • Supporting Indigenous Communities: The Amazon is home to more than 120 indigenous groups, and their knowledge and stewardship of the forest are crucial. Conservation efforts must respect and empower these communities, recognising their long history of sustainable management of the rainforest.
  • Sustainable Livelihoods: Providing alternative livelihoods for local communities can reduce their reliance on activities harmful to the rainforest, such as deforestation and illegal wildlife trade. Initiatives such as the export of Brazil nuts from Madre de Dios, Peru, have provided sustainable income sources while conserving the forest.
  • Protected Areas: Establishing protected areas, such as national parks and wildlife reserves, is essential for safeguarding vulnerable ecosystems. The creation of the Bajo Baudó protected area in Colombia, for example, helped preserve the Chocó forest, one of the most biologically rich areas in the world.
  • Ecotourism: Ecotourism can play a significant role in rainforest conservation by generating revenue that funds protection efforts and benefits local communities. It also raises awareness about the importance of conservation and provides an economic alternative to destructive practices. Destinations like the Amazon, the Pantanal in Brazil, and the Andean Cloud Forest in Ecuador offer ecotourism opportunities that adhere to sustainable and responsible practices.
  • Partnerships and Collaboration: Conservation organisations, such as the Rainforest Alliance, work with forest communities, farmers, governments, and companies to protect the Amazon Basin. Their initiatives focus on supporting indigenous communities, promoting sustainable agriculture, and conserving biodiversity.

Au Pair Travel Tales: Exploring New Horizons

If you're looking to extend your travels in South America, working in a hostel is a great way to do so. The pay may not be great, but you can often work out a deal with hostels and bars to offer your labour in exchange for a bed and meals, which may be more valuable than any money they could give you.

Large hostel chains like Kokopelli and Loki are known to offer deals to backpackers to help them continue their trips.

There are two ways to go about getting a job in a hostel in South America: you can either arrange a placement before you arrive, or you can get hired on-site. Both are possible, but depending on various factors, one might work better for you.

Arranging Work from Abroad

If you know you want to work in a hostel, setting up a job placement in advance can be advantageous. Some hostels advertise online for positions, and agencies like Contact Chile and ChileVentura can set you up with work for about $500. Work exchange programs like Workaway offer room and board in exchange for your work, for a minimal membership fee.

Getting Hired On-Site

Some hostels require that you show up in person before they'll hire you, so they can evaluate whether you're the kind of person they want to hire. It's also common for travellers who were initially guests to become employees, so don't be afraid to strike up friendships with the people who work there.

Languages, especially English, are a must for hostel work in South America. Other useful skills include people skills, persistence, webpage design, and cooking.

Hours and Pay

At La Casa Roja in Santiago, Chile, 18 hours of work per week will get you free accommodation. Work hours combine shifts at reception, the bar, and cleaning rooms and bathrooms. Night shifts are part of the deal.

At La Casa del Viajero in El Bolsón, Patagonia, Argentina, work may include gardening, watering plants, chopping wood, and construction. They offer travellers the possibility of working in exchange for accommodation, and sometimes a food stipend.

Working at a hostel requires a minimum time commitment that some travellers cannot meet. Cleaning bathrooms and checking in guests can be tedious, and night shifts at reception can be long. You will usually live among travellers in a dorm room, so life can get noisy, and privacy is limited.

However, a job at a hostel can be a great way to get to know people from all over the world, as well as the local culture.

Exploring Canada: What to Know Before You Go

Au pairing is a great way to travel and work in South America, particularly if you love children and have experience in childcare. Au pairing gives you the opportunity to live with a host family and become an 'equal' member (as 'au pair' translates from French).

Au pairing in South America is a chance to combine your passion for childcare with travel and cultural exchange. You will be able to live with a local family and care for their children, receiving free accommodation and meals in exchange for a few hours of work per day. This is a fantastic way to make a local connection and gain cultural insight.

South America Inside is an agency that arranges Au Pair programmes specifically in Chile. They have been organising stays in the country for almost 20 years and are the only agency located in Chile that arranges these programmes.

Au Pair in America is another agency that arranges au pairs for South America, as well as other parts of the world. They have a large global recruitment network spanning nearly 60 countries.

Au pairing in South America will allow you to explore the continent in an affordable way, and you will have the opportunity to travel on weekends and vacations. You can also study alongside your childcare duties and receive weekly pocket money.

To become an au pair in South America, you will need a visa that allows you to live and provide childcare in your chosen country. For example, in the USA, au pairs need a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa. Make sure to research the specific visa requirements for your desired South American country.

Au pairing is a wonderful way to gain cultural exchange, personal growth, and unforgettable experiences while travelling through South America.

Volunteering in South America is a fantastic way to get to know a new culture, give back to the community, and change the world . Numerous South American countries have interesting and rewarding volunteer opportunities, ranging from working with children and animals to doing conservation initiatives and neighborhood improvement projects.

Whether you’re looking for a project in a village, city, or in nature, it’s time to learn how to volunteer in South America.

In case you're wondering how to volunteer in South America, we’ll cover that here—and it's a lot easier than you might think. Discover which countries in South America require a visa and whether it's possible to volunteer in South America for free, then take the next steps necessary to begin your new volunteer experience.

No matter where in South America you decide to volunteer, whether it be in Colombia , Brazil , Peru , Ecuador , or another nation, you will have the chance to experience a new culture and develop new perspectives. You’ll also have the chance as a volunteer to work with neighborhood nonprofits and contribute to initiatives that genuinely improve people's lives.

Can I volunteer in South America for free?

While there are some free volunteer opportunities available in South America, many reputable organizations charge a fee to cover costs like lodging, meals, and transportation. Depending on the organization, the program, and the length of your stay, this cost can vary significantly.

You should avoid volunteer opportunities that market themselves as “free” because those organizations might not be as reliable or effective at assisting local communities. Furthermore, it’s possible that these groups do not offer volunteers enough resources, support, or training.

When signing up for a volunteer program, it's crucial to thoroughly investigate the organization and comprehend what the costs will cover . Some organizations may provide financial aid or scholarships to volunteers who need it because they cannot afford the program expenses.

Which countries in South America require a visa for volunteering?

Depending on where you want to volunteer and your nationality, you may need a visa to volunteer in South America. Different South American countries have different visa requirements.

Argentina , Brazil , Chile , and Colombia do not require a visa for visitors to enter, and visitors may then stay up to 90 days. This applies to citizens of numerous nations, including the United States, Canada, and the majority of European nations. You might need to apply for a work visa if you intend to volunteer for more than 90 days.

In contrast, visitors to Peru are permitted a visa-free stay of up to 183 days. You might need to apply for a work visa if you intend to volunteer for more than 183 days.

Make sure your travel documents are in order before embarking on your volunteering adventure.

Before making any travel arrangements, it’s important to confirm visa requirements based on the country you intend to volunteer in and your nationality. For the most recent information on visa requirements, it is best to check with the embassy or consulate of the country you intend to visit.

3 other requirements for volunteering in South America

Each country in the large and diverse continent of South America provides special volunteer opportunities. There are many groups that would appreciate your assistance, whether you wish to work in conservation , English teaching , or community development . However, keep the following considerations in mind:

  • Language: South America is a majority Spanish-speaking continent (with a few exceptions). Knowing, or at least actively learning , the language can improve cross-cultural communication.
  • Compatibility: Be sure that the volunteer organization’s mission aligns with the main goal of your time volunteering abroad. You don’t want to commit to a project that ultimately leaves you (and the community) unfulfilled.
  • Commitment: A serious commitment and a genuine desire to help is essential. Remember, volunteering abroad isn’t a vacation—it’s impactful work, first and foremost.

How to volunteer in south america.

Looking for more guidance on how to volunteer in South America? Here are the next steps to take ASAP to make it happen!

1. Research and prepare

Start by researching organizations and volunteer programs in South America. Look for reputable organizations that have a positive impact on the community and align with your interests and skills. Ask yourself what kind of skills you have to offer, and what kind of opportunities those skills are compatible with. It can also be important to carefully consider which country to volunteer in! Which leads us to…

2. Choose a country

South America is a vast and diverse continent, and each country has its own culture and needs. Choose a country that you feel passionate about and where you can make a meaningful impact. If you don’t already have a destination in mind, this step can take a while, so start researching early. Don’t worry though—it’s one of the most fun steps!

3. Choose a cause

Decide on a cause or project that you want to support. Some popular areas to volunteer in South America include education , conservation , health care , and community development . When volunteering abroad, it’s important to consider your ability to contribute to your chosen cause, as well as the skills you can offer. That means that choosing a cause can sometimes come before choosing a destination, and vice versa. During your research period, ask yourself what matters the most to you during a volunteer project. That’ll help narrow down your search!

Once you have identified an organization or program you are interested in, fill out an application form and provide the necessary documentation. Some organizations may require a background check, references, or a volunteer fee. Discover whether or not you will need a visa for the duration of your stay, and what the application process is like. (Do you need to apply in advance? How far in advance? How long is your visa valid? Do they grant visas on arrival?) If applicable, prepare essential documents and apply for your visa as soon as possible.

5. Plan and prepare

lower half of person sitting on stairs with suitcase

Have you packed the essentials for your time abroad?

Make sure to plan and prepare for your trip to South America. This includes getting any necessary vaccinations , obtaining travel insurance , and packing appropriately. Don’t forget that seasons in parts of South America are flip-flopped from North America. So if you’re heading to Argentina in June, you better pack some warm clothes!

6. Be open-minded

Volunteering in a foreign country can be a challenging and humbling experience. Be open-minded, respectful, and willing to learn from the local community. Engage with your host community as often as possible (and avoid Westernized comforts when you can). Traveling is always more meaningful when it includes authentic cultural exchange.

7. Reflect and share

After your volunteer experience, take time to reflect on what you learned and how you can continue to support the cause. Share your experience with others and inspire them to make a difference too. Many organizations offer the opportunity to become an alumni ambassador! And on that note, if you haven’t reached out to program alumni prior to applying for programs, make sure to do so. They’ll have the best insight on what to expect and how to prepare for your experience.
