Seven of Nine first appeared in the fourth season premiere of Star Trek: Voyager , " Scorpion, Part II ."

The daughter of human Federation exobiologists Magnus and Erin Hansen, the ex-Borg drone was born Annika Hansen on the Tendara Colony. At a very young age, she was captured and assimilated by the cybernetic species known as the Borg, who renamed her Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero One.

Seven was liberated by the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager in 2374. She joined the crew and returned to the Alpha Quadrant with the starship in 2378. After her time on Voyager , she joined the Fenris Rangers, helping instill justice in lawless and dangerous regions of the galaxy.

Seven was assigned as the Borg liaison to Voyager when the Collective formed a temporary alliance with Janeway to defeat their mutual enemy, Species 8472. But you can't just trust a Borg; after they got rid of Species 8472, Seven tried to hand Voyager over to the Collective. Janeway responded by destroying Seven's link to the Borg and removing most of her high-tech hardware.

Seven initially resisted Janeway's attempts to restore her humanity, but eventually she came to accept her new life.

Star trek's 10 connections to a nightmare on elm street, every time the gorn appeared in star trek (so far).

Who is Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine, one of several returning characters in Star Trek: Picard ? Prior to this year's San Diego Comic Con event, very little was known about Patrick Stewart's  Star Trek: Picard solo series, other than that the titular Starfleet legend would be retired at the outset of the story. Many  Star Trek fans were anticipating that Picard may rendezvous with some of his pals from  The Next Generation  in this new adventure,   but the connectivity to previous series actually runs far deeper.

In an action-packed trailer, Picard stumbles across the familiar form of Seven of Nine, once again portrayed by Jeri Ryan. This particular reveal caught everyone by surprise, as the character was a mainstay of  Star Trek: Voyager , rather than Picard's own  The Next Generation . Nevertheless, Ryan's return was met with an overwhelmingly positive reaction from the franchise faithful, and speculation soon followed as to what the future may hold for this popular  Star Trek character.

With Seven of Nine returning to screens once again, it's perhaps worth looking back at her  Star Trek origins, her time aboard the good ship Voyager, and the future continuation of her story in  Star Trek: Picard .

Seven Of Nine's Star Trek Origins

Star Trek: The Next Generation introduced a brand new race of formidable villains, the Borg - a cybernetic breed of hive-mind life forms determined to remake every other living creature in their own image via the process of assimilation. Despite their violent intent, the story of Hugh established that Borg  could be reformed. By separating them from the Collective and reprogramming their functions, a Borg drone could develop autonomy and mental freedom. This concept was developed further with Seven of Nine in  Star Trek: Voyager .

Seven of Nine was born as a human named Annika Hansen on the Tendara Earth colony. Both of Annika's parents were Federation scientists tasked with studying the existence and biology of the Borg race and, unsurprisingly, this hazardous occupation would ultimately lead to the Hansen family's demise. As their studies became more detailed, the Hansens set out for Borg territory with a 4-year old Annika in tow, following one of the infamous Borg Cubes into the Delta Quadrant. Thanks to their scientific ingenuity, the Hansens remained undetected for two years, walking anonymously among the Borg . However, an ion storm rendered their ship's purpose-built shields useless for several seconds - more than enough time for the Borg to notice their presence and swoop in.

Annika spent almost two decades as a part of the Borg Collective under the designation Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01.

Seven Of Nine In Star Trek: Voyager

Facing the might of a new threat known only as Species 8472, the Borg were forced into an uneasy alliance with the Voyager crew, with Janeway offering the Collective new weapons in exchange for safe passage in Star Trek: Voyager 's season 3 finale. The Borg sent Seven of Nine onto the Federation vessel as their representative and, as one might expect, the Borg tried to break their end of the bargain once they got what they desired. Captain Janeway did indeed expect this betrayal, and as Seven of Nine moved to assimilate the crew, Lieutenant Torres overloaded the Borg implant in Annika's body, destroying her connection to the rest of the Collective.

The Voyager's holographic doctor reverted Seven of Nine 's physical form back to that of a human, as far as was possible, but some Borg trademarks remained, including the machine-like thought processes and a struggle to identify as human. In season 4's "The Raven," the Voyager visited the site of the crashed Hansen family ship, and Seven regained her memory of the assimilation she suffered as a child.

From this point, Seven's gradual transition from Borg to human becomes one of  Star Trek: Voyager 's central themes. Professionally, the new crew member uses her technological expertise to assist Voyager in the role of a science officer, facilitating numerous upgrades on board the ship. Personally, however, Seven's new life proved far trickier. Over the remaining 4 seasons, Seven became increasingly more human and independent in nature, despite several moral clashes with Captain Janeway and others. One of Seven of Nine's most memorable moments came in season 5's "Drone." Using the traditional "transporter malfunction" explanation, Seven found herself with a clone child, allowing the former Borg to explore her new-found maternal instincts. The artificially-created drone realizes his presence puts Voyager in danger and duly sacrifices himself, giving Seven of Nine a profound sense of loss for the first time since her assimilation.

Eventually, of course, Seven becomes a close friend of Janeway's and a trusted member of the Voyager crew. She even develops romantic associations with various characters, although some might argue the sexual element of Seven of Nine was played upon heavily.

Seven Of Nine In Star Trek: Picard

Not a great deal is known about Seven of Nine's role in  Star Trek: Picard , but it can be gleaned from the trailer that she'll likely be helping Picard somehow on his mission to protect a mysterious young girl from harm. Seven's return is surely also connected to the wider Borg presence in  Star Trek: Picard . The footage released thus far reveals a Borg Cube and a Romulan facility that seemingly keeps Borg captive. It's surely also no coincidence that  Star Trek: Picard brings together Seven of Nine and her spiritual predecessor, Hugh . Both of these characters explored the same themes of individuality and second chances and those concepts could also form the heart of  Star Trek: Picard .

Jeri Ryan's brief appearance in the  Star Trek: Picard trailer also implies that her and the former Enterprise captain meet away from Earth, perhaps after Stewart's character has set out with his new crew . Interestingly, Seven of Nine's speech patterns in Star Trek: Picard are far less formal than her days on the Voyager, suggesting some significant progression for the character. Seven seems cynical about Picard coming out of retirement, and the scene's homely setting suggests that the former Borg may have left Starfleet and settled down herself after arriving from the Delta Quadrant. It remains to be seen whether  Star Trek: Voyager 's Chakotay will appear, since the First Officer and Seven married in one future timeline.

Seven of Nine isn't set to be a member of  Star Trek: Picard 's main cast, but more of a fan-pleasing guest star. Nevertheless, her return allows the  Star Trek franchise to give fans an insight into Seven's continued human development, whether she lived a full and happy life and possibly even the fates of other Voyager crew members.

Early life [ ]

Annika Hansen was born on the Tendara Colony on June 24 in 2348 , to human exobiologists Erin and Magnus Hansen. Because her parents moved frequently because of their work, Annika spent a lot of time with her aunt, Irene Hansen on Earth . By the time she was five, Annika was living with her parents on Heronius II. In 2354 , Annika and her parents left Heronius II aboard the USS Raven , as they finally had approval by the Federation Council to begin a study of mysterious black cubed ships. After spending many months searching for a cube, the Raven had broken regulations and had crossed the Romulan Neutral Zone . However, just as they were contemplating a return to Earth, they encountered a Borg cube. After six months of observation, the Raven followed the cube into a transwarp conduit and into the Delta Quadrant . There, they began extensively studying the Borg for two years undetected because of the Hansens’ invention, multi-adaptive shielding, a type of stealth technology. The Hansens had gathered a large amount of data about the Borg. However it came to an abrupt end in 2356 , when the Raven was detected by the Borg and was attacked. The Borg pursued the Raven to a planet just inside B'omar space, where the science vessel crashlanded. While her parents were quickly assimilated, Annika attempted to hide, but was later found and assimilated; Annika was 6 years old by then.

Life as a Borg drone [ ]

At some point after her assimilation, Annika was given the Borg designation ‘Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero-One’. During her time as a Borg, Seven helped to assimilate millions of individuals.

In 2368 , Seven was briefly disconnected from the hive mind when she and three other drones of her unimatrix, Two of Nine, Three of Nine, and Four of Nine, were the only survivors of a vessel crash on Planet 1865-Alpha that severed them from the Collective. While the four drones waited by the crash site for another Borg vessel to retrieve them, they slowly began remembering their lives prior to their respective assimilations. Unlike the other drones, the emotionally young Seven wanted to return to the collective. Scared of being alone, she injected her fellow drones with nanoprobes and established a collective amongst themselves, before being rescued and re-assimilated. After re-assimilation, the other three drones were eventually severed from the Collective but remained mentally linked because of Seven’s actions.

In 2374 , Seven was selected as a liaison to work with Captain Kathryn Janeway and Lieutenant Commander Tuvok of the USS Voyager as part of the alliance against Species 8472 . Their mission was to develop a modified nanoprobe weapon that could destroy 8472 bio-ships and force them to withdraw back to Fluidic space .

After the mission succeeded, Seven attempted to assimilate the Voyager crew, but her link to the collective was severed. Discovering that she had Human genes, most of her implants were successfully removed by Voyager ’s EMH.

USS Voyager [ ]

After several attempts to communicate with the collective, Seven eventually accepted that her place was aboard Voyager as an individual. Following her disconnection, Seven found a mentor in Captain Janeway, who continued to help her come to terms with her humanity, long-since sublimated by the Borg . The ship's EMH, called The Doctor by the Voyager crew, also provided valuable guidance in enabling her to develop social skills so she could blend in with the crew.

Earning the trust and respect of Captain Janeway, Seven began to work on several projects to enhance Voyager ’s capabilities.

She attempted to help the engineering crew modify the warp drive to generate transwarp conduits. The efforts failed. Along with Ensign Harry Kim , she designed and constructed the ship’s astrometrics lab, which used Borg technology to plot routes that trimmed several years off of Voyager ’s journey. She was part of the team which designed the Delta Flyer -class shuttlecraft in 2375 . And she assisted in the construction of the quantum slipstream drive installed aboard Voyager in the same year. She also helped implement enhancements to Voyager ’s deflector dish in 2377 when real time communication with Starfleet became possible through a Hirogen communications network.

Starfleet (Based on Novels) [ ]

Academy lecturer and federation advisor [ ].

Following Voyager ’s return to the Alpha Quadrant in 2378 , Seven lived with her aunt, Irene Hansen and joined a Federation think tank. As of 2380 , Seven of Nine was an instructor at Starfleet Academy . During the Borg incident of that year, Seven was in contact with the assimilated Kathryn Janeway through her implants. After bringing her concerns to Starfleet and being overruled, Seven went rogue and booked passage with Antin Vargo so that she could reach the derelict Borg cube. When passage to the cube proved impossible, she instead joined the USS Enterprise -E and its crew so that she could bring her concerns to Captain Jean-Luc Picard . As they proceeded to investigate, the Borg launched an invasion of Earth and demanded that Seven be turned over to them in exchange for the Borg to discontinue their attack. Instead of being returned to the Borg, however, Seven and an Enterprise away team boarded the Planet Killer encountered by the first USS Enterprise over a century prior. Seven bonded with the device and attacked the Borg cube that was attacking Earth, releasing the virus program devised by Geordi La Forge while in the process. When the Planet Killer was destroyed she was rescued by Vargo.

The following year, she was appointed Federation Deputy Security Advisor by Federation President Nanietta Bacco out of recognition of her unique skills in assessing the Borg threat during their attempted extermination of the Federation and its allies. She frequently clashed with senior members of President Bacco’s cabinet, including her immediate supervisor, Federation Security Advisor Jas Abrik, and Federation Starfleet Commander-in-Chief Edward Jellico . She was present in the Palais de la Concorde Monet Room at the time of the Borg ’s near-attack on Earth in 2381 .

Starfleet enlistment [ ]

While she was teaching in Starfleet Academy in 2380 , Seven enlisted with Starfleet with encouragement from Rear Admiral Janeway and Captain Chakotay . She underwent a grueling enlistment process and took a barrage of specialty examinations. Owing to her invaluable contributions to Starfleet and to the Federation against the Borg, the enlistment requirements of time in service were waved. But she had to pass through a review of a board of high ranking non-commissioned officers.

In 2385 , Seven was given the non-commissioned Starfleet rank of Master chief petty officer , the highest rank a "non-com" could possibly attain in Starfleet.

Starfleet Performance Evaluation [ ]

Despite Seven’s personality seeming to be Vulcan-like, there are differences. At times she shows paradoxical displays of arrogance, warmth, passion, wit, and vulnerability, and the customary curtness of her background as a Borg drone.

Seven’s mode of speech is also subtly distinctive, with her vocabulary and word choice being reflective of her cyborg heritage. Her speech rarely contains contractions.

Seven has a tendency to use highly mechanistic, strict binary (or absolutist) logic. She is largely incapable of perceiving “shades of gray” — something is strictly one way or entirely another. As a result, she never describes anything with emotional terms and separates all knowledge and actions into two categories: relevant or irrelevant.

History [ | ]

Annika Hansen was born in 2350 on Tandara colony. Her parents, Magnus and Erin Hansen, were Federation scientists who studied the Borg , long before first contact with them was officially established. In 2353 Annika Hansen accompanied her parents on one of their research missions. Three years into the mission, the Hansens were discovered and assimilated by the Collective. Annika became a Borg drone with the full designation Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01 .

In 2374 , Seven of Nine was utilized as a liaison between the Borg Collective and the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager when Kathryn Janeway offered a truce to address the larger threat of Species 8472 . When the alliance broke down, the crew of Voyager cut Seven's link to the Collective. Over the following years, Seven would regain her identity and become a valuable member of Voyager' s crew. In 2376 Seven's curiosity on an away mission lead to the reawakening of the Vaadwaur after 900 years in stasis. In 2378 Seven returned to Earth with the crew of Voyager .

In 2381 , Seven was approached by Captain Jean-Luc Picard to join a task force against a renewed Borg threat. Seven was tasked with researching the technology brought back by Voyager from the Delta Quadrant. In 2385 , Seven severed all her ties with Starfleet , in protest of the admiralty's decision of disbanding the Borg task force. Subsequently, Seven joined the Daystrom Institute . By 2399 , Seven had joined the Fenris Rangers , a group of vigilantes operating in the now-defunct Romulan Neutral Zone in the Beta Quadrant with the aim of restoring order in the region following the destruction of the Romulan homeworld and the subsequent collapse of the Romulan Star Empire .

By 2410 , Seven, at the request of Rear Admiral Tuvok , had joined Starfleet's efforts to explore the newly-accessible Delta Quadrant, joining a research team aboard the U.S.S. Callisto . Seven remained in regular contact with Kathryn Janeway , who had helped her regain her individuality during their shared time on Voyager .

History [ ]

Early life and assimilation [ ].

Seven of Nine was born to parents Magnus and Erin Hansen. She was given the birthname, Annika Hansen. Her parents were exobiologists (they studied non-human or alien organisms) who studied a then-unknown species known as the Borg. When Annika was 4, they took her along with her for a long-term scientific mission aboard their ship the USS Raven . For a couple of years, their research had gone without incident.

They had found and followed a Borg cube to the Delta Quadrant. They had invented a form of multi-adaptive shielding which prevented them from being detected. However, after they encountering an ion storm, the Raven was damaged and their shielding failed, leaving them visible to Borg sensors. The Borg cube detected the small ship and intercepted, chasing it down to a barren planet. The ship crashed but the Hansens survived, only to be assimilated by the Borg.

Serving the Collective [ ]

As a child, Annika did not go through the same manner of assimilation as adults do. After watching the transformation of her parents, she was placed inside a maturation chamber - a device that would accelerate her physical development. She remained inside the maturation chamber for five years, and as her body grew, the Borg reconstructed her neural pathways and purged her of any trace of individuality. After emerging from her maturation cycle, she was no longer the human called Annika Hansen. Her new designation was Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01. Over the next thirteen years, she would contribute to the Collective's destructive pursuit of perfection by killing and assimilating countless innocent victims.

The Species 8472 Conflict [ ]

When the Borg became engrossed in a one-sided war against Species 8472, they forged an alliance with the lone Federation starship Voyager , whose crew had access to knowledge that could turn the tide in the Collective's favor. As part of the agreement, the Borg selected a representative drone to communicate and work directly with Captain Janeway and her officers. Seven of Nine was selected as the representative and aided Janeway's efforts into modifying the Borg's nanoprobes to build a bio-molecular warhead that could kill Species 8472. As they worked together, Janeway noticed that her drone liaison appeared to have been human, which Seven of Nine confirmed.

Species 8472 would later attack the cube escorting Voyager through Borg space. The Collective deemed it necessary to sacrifice their ship to protect Voyager , and so rammed into the alien bioship, destroying both vessels. Seven of Nine and the rest of her ship's subjunction transported aboard Voyager just before impact, bringing with them an injured Captain Janeway and Lieutenant Tuvok . The drones assimilated one of Voyager's cargo bays and converted it into a workspace to continue working on the nano-warhead. As Voyager continued its journey, the war raged on with Species 8472 advancing towards the Borg's core worlds. The Collective decided that they must comandeer Voyager and take it into the aliens' realm to bring the fight to them. Seven of Nine accessed Voyager's deflector dish and reconfigured it to emit an inverse graviton beam that would create a quantum singularity: a gateway into Species 8472's homespace. Commander Chakotay had threatened the Borg with decompression if they attempted any kind of sabotage and so he had the entire deck depressurized and blew the drones out into space. Seven of Nine managed to survive the decompression, however, and later revealed the truth: that the Borg had started the war by invading Species 8472's fluidic realm. She then continued to assist with modifying Voyager to battle the aliens and recreated the anomaly that brought Voyager into fluidic space, allowing them to return to the Delta Quadrant.

The nanoprobe warheads successfully destroyed a number of alien bioships, which deterred Species 8472 and sent them fleeing back to their own realm. Seven of Nine then regained contact with the Borg Collective, which ordered the assimilation of Voyager . She attempted to hijack the ship and fly it back into Borg territory, but was stopped by Chakotay, who used a neural tranciever connected to a Borg alcove in Cargo Bay 2 to telepathically communicate with the drone. He saw Seven's memories from her human life and maintained the psychic link long enough for B'Elanna Torres to transmit an energy surge through the alcove, overloading Chakotay's tranciever while he was connected to Seven. The backlash overloaded Seven's neural tranciever implants and forcibly severed her connection to the Collective.

Becoming human [ ]

Shortly after being severed from the Collective, Seven of Nine's human cells began reasserting themselves. As her immune system increased in strength, her body began to reject her Borg implants, thus threatening her life. Captain Janeway had no intention of returning her to the Borg and decided that she was to remain on Voyager and assist the crew with dismantling the modifications the Borg had made to the ship during the battle against Species 8472. Seven helped, but reluctantly, making several attempts to escape custody and contact the Collective. Eventually the Borg modifications were destroyed and most of Seven's implants had been removed from her body, which appeared slender and quite attractive without any Borg exo-plating. Captain Janeway and the Doctor would continuously monitor Seven's human development from hereon in.

Even though Seven had had her implants removed, she initially still acted in a very Borg-like manner. She would come across as cold, distant and often outright hostile. She would frequently come into conflict with Captain Janeway regarding ship procedures and Starfleet protocols, as well as basic human morals and behavior. These factors made it very difficult for her to interact with the crew, and so the Doctor would provide her lessons in social development. Over the course of her life on Voyager , Seven would learn how to properly converse with others, how to smile, even how to enjoy herself.

Even as she developed her sense of human individuality, Seven still clung to certain aspects of her life among the Borg. Some of her implants remained, including non-essential devices such as her assimilation tubules. She also never used her human name, preferring to go by "Seven". Though she had turned her back on the Collective, she continued to draw strength from the sense of order they had instilled in her. Seven possesses a highly analytical mind and always tries to put it to good use, preferring to bury herself in work rather than relax or socialize. Her main duties aboard Voyager - despite having no Starfleet rank - included running the ship's astrometrics lab, navigating the ship and offering information and insight on the Borg whenever Voyager was forced to engage them.

Seven's recovery would not be easy. It took her years to adjust to being an individual. However she proved to be an invaluable member of the Voyager crew. As she advanced her social skills, she would also develop a romantic interest in Commander Chakotay.

Helping Picard [ ]

Seven of Nine appeared in Star Trek: Picard as a supporting character.

Near the end of the third and final season, Picard and his former command crew of the USS Enterprise -D and USS Enterprise -E discovered that a group of rogue Changelings who sought revenge for the events of the Dominion War had allied with the Federation's worst enemy, the Borg, who were presumed no longer a threat thanks to the virus that they had been infected with by Kathryn Janeway , former captain of the USS Voyager . Initially, the Changelings and their leader, Vadic, were able to take over the USS Titan -A with some help from Lore, Data's evil twin brother, after pursuing it for some time in their ship, the Shrike , and causing some damage, but Data was able to bluff Lore into performing a move that essentially allowed Data to override Lore in their new body of Daystrom Android M-5-10 and take over, in which he single-handedly took out Vadic's forces using the Titan systems against them, with a little help from Worf and Raffi Musiker , before then having Vadic and her remaining bodyguard sucked out of the Titan bridge via the emergency airlock, while Seven and Jack were safe thanks to a force field Jack deployed to protect them from the vacuum, though Seven still got one last taunt in at Vadic before she met her end...

After destroying Vadic, her forces, and the Shrike , Seven then helps take Picard and his old command crew back to Earth after discovering that the Changelings had infected the transport system Starfleet uses with Borg DNA taken from Picard's original deceased body he still possessed from his time as Locutus, and to warn Fleet Admiral Elizabeth Shelby, who was in the middle of Frontier Day celebrations with having the USS Enterprise -F and the rest of Starfleet be united in the new Fleet Formation protocol (which unknown to Shelby was another move by Vadic's forces to put Starfleet under the Borg Queen's control). By the time Picard can warn her of the Borg having returned, alarming Shelby at the mention of the Federation's most feared foe after she witnessed the carnage of the Battle of Wolf 359 years ago, it is too late. After Picard's son Jack becomes Vox of Borg, the voice of the Borg Collective, and Locutus' successor, every Starfleet crew member below the age of 25 is assimilated by the Borg DNA in their bodies into becoming loyal Borg Drones to the Borg Queen, and set about killing Shelby and every Starfleet crew member not assimilated, before turning the fleet on Spacedock to take down the Earth's planetary shield and then bombard the major cities as part of the Borg Queen's genocidal intent to wipe out all species while using her new assimilated drones to rebuild the Borg through evolution rather than assimilation. Seven's own captain, Liam Shaw, is also mortally wounded by the assimilated Sidney and Alandra LaForge and his other younger crewmembers, but with his last order, passes command of the Titan to her, before expiring.

While Picard and his crew escape and go to reactivate the rebuilt Enterprise -D, Seven, joined by Raffi and those older crew members who were not assimilated, use a new strategy with their phasers to send the assimilated crew members to be trapped in the transporter room, which they locked down, including Geordi LaForge 's assimilated daughters Sidney and Alandra. Then remembering that the Titan -A still has the Klingon cloaking device from the HMS Bounty installed and Fleet Formation uses line-of-sight to keep the ships together, Seven uses the cloaking device and the ability to scramble the shields of the assimilated fleet to launch hit-and-run tactics on the fleet to take some pressure off of Spacedock. This was also to help Picard once they saw the Enterprise -D on their scanners over at Jupiter and realize he's going after the source to sever the Borg Queen's connection to Starfleet, so they needed to stall and buy him as much time as they could. The tactic works, but the assimilated crew members soon escape and Geordi's daughters take out the cloaking device, leading to the Titan -A being exposed and overcome once the fleet got wise to her tactics, before being recalled back into the fleet as, having lost contact with Vox, but with the signal still active, the fleet prepares to bombard Earth after the planetary shield fell with Spacedock's capitulation, while Sidney, Alandra, and the other assimilated, reach the bridge of the Titan -A and advance on Seven, Raffi, and the others, leveling their phasers with murderous intent on their Borg-controlled minds as Seven and Raffi prepare for a last stand.

However, at that moment, before either side can fire their phasers, Sidney's Borg nanoprobes recede from her face and go inert, and she begins to come to, before finding to her horror that she was aiming a phaser set to kill at Seven and Raffi. As Alandra and the others begin to come to as well, just as horrified and shocked as the scope of their atrocities under Borg control hit home with full force, seeing them back to normal, Seven, Raffi, and their crewmembers stand down and power down their phasers, realizing that Picard and the Enterprise -D command crew did it. They destroyed the Borg Queen once and for all and severed her control over Starfleet permanently.

Seven was promoted by Captain Tuvok and given command of the USS Titan -A, which was re-christened as the USS Enterprise -G as testament and thanks to Picard and his crew for once more saving Earth and the Federation from the Borg.

Physiology [ ]

As a drone [ ].

During her time in the Collective, Seven of Nine's body was outfitted with many cybernetic systems that all Borg share, such as body armor, assimilation tubules and shields. Her left eye had been replaced with an ocular implant, but she kept both her original arms and had not been equipped with any further prosthetics. Seven was also armed with a disruptor attached to her right forearm.

Post-Borg [ ]

When Seven was disconnected from the Borg, her human DNA began to regenerate and reject many of her cybernetics. Her cranial plating and body armor were removed and her eyepiece was replaced with a new biosynthetic organ that retained some Borg circuitry around the optic nerve, allowing her increased visual acuity in one eye. The iris color matched her human eye perfectly, something the Doctor was very proud of. Many of Seven's cybernetic organelles and some of her brain implants were removed as well, though removing all of them would have killed her. Although her hair was regrown and her skin restored to its natural color, Seven still had swarms of nanoprobes within her bloodstream, which she could control and reprogram as she chose. Her human metabolism has atrophied during her time among the Borg and her remaining implants have kept it from fully re-developing, resulting in her needing a Borg regeneration alcove to revitalize herself rather sleeping in a bed although she occasionally needs to eat.

Among various Borg implants that couldn't be removed Seven also kept her Vocal Subprocessor giving her perfect pitch, Assimilation Tubules, a Cortical Node which couldn't be removed for an extended period of time without killing her as well as an Interlink and Sensory Nodes used for communication and allowing her to perceive cloaked individuals or objects out of phase. Seven also possesses a Proximity Transceiver so she can detect nearby drones and retained her Personal Force Field Emitter which adapts against various energy weapons and allows her to survive in space without an Exosuit.

Relationships [ ]

Seven of Nine has had much difficulty adapting to a human lifestyle, but over the years she has lived aboard Voyager she has established a number of different relationships with the individuals aboard.

  • Captain Kathryn Janeway - Initially, Seven harbored a great deal of anger and resentment toward Janeway for forcing her to remain on Voyager . They quickly established a heated but stable working relationship but over the years Seven has come to regard the captain as her guide toward becoming an individual and would regularly turn to her for advice. In many ways, Janeway is like a mother to Seven, nuturing the ex-drone's development as a human and teaching her valuable lessons to help her fit in.
  • The Doctor - The Doctor has also played a pivotal role in Seven's growth as a human being, acting much like a father to her, though he might argue that she is more of a favourite patient. Seven's cybernetically-enhanced physiology requires special medical needs and she and the Doctor have aided each other in developing new medical techniques and treatments derived from her Borg nanites. The Doctor has also taught Seven several key social skills, such as how to smile and later on how to express romantic interest.
  • Chakotay - Near the end of the television series, Seven of Nine becomes romantically involved with Chakotay. At first, their dates seem to be more like research experiments rather than actual social events, but it later becomes apparent that their attraction is very much real. The relationship apparently ended some time before 2399.
  • The Borg Queen - Since leaving the Collective, Seven has come to despise the Borg as much as anyone else. She has developed a personal enmity with the Borg Queen, who is able to communicate with Seven during her regeneration periods and has used these moments to pressure her for information on Voyager , to threaten the ship or simply just to torment Seven. The Queen claims that Seven was her 'favorite' drone and has also stated that the Collective had planted Seven aboard Voyager intentionally as part of a strategy to assimilate Earth.

In the years following her return to the Alpha Quadrant she had relationships with other individuals.

  • Jean-Luc Picard - following her return to the Alpha Quadrant she met Picard. The two felt a bit of kinship as they both had the experience of being assimilated into the Borg collective. In 2399 she asked Picard if he had rediscovered his humanity after being rescued from the collective. She told Picard that she was still working on regaining hers, and Picard admitted he was still working on regaining his as well.
  • Raffi Musiker - Hansen developed a close bond with Musiker after meeting her, and the two women are currently in a lesbian relationship

The Untold Truth Of Seven Of Nine

Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Picard

Some of the most popular good guys are former bad guys. In  Star Trek , there's no more perfect example of this than Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine — a former member of the villainous Borg who became a fan favorite character on  Star Trek: Voyager .

One of the more singular aspects of Seven's character is how popular she became in spite of how late she showed up. Seven of Nine isn't introduced to Voyager  until the season 4 premiere. Few regular characters introduced so late in a  Trek  series have proven quite so successful. But while her sex appeal, her ongoing struggles to resolve her Borg upbringing with her humanity, and her more badass posturing proved a hit with fans, it's clear her introduction to  Voyager  wasn't universally embraced behind the camera.

Regardless, Seven of Nine's popularity endures. Not only does she remain one of fans' most beloved Trek  heroes of the past, her story has proven to continue beyond  Voyager  to the franchise's 21st century series. To learn about how a character named after a couple of numbers could earn so much adulation, keep reading for the untold truth of Seven of Nine.

Seven was inspired by an earlier episode

The special feature "Braving the Unknown" on Star Trek: Voyager 's season 4 home release reveals where the idea for Seven of Nine came from. Brannon Braga — a producer and writer on  Voyager — says the notion of a Borg character joining the crew came to him while watching an ad for the season 3 episode "Unity."

In the episode, Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran) finds a planet of Borg who have been disconnected from the Collective. Unfortunately, conflict rages on the planet as rivalries between different species re-emerge once ties to the Borg have been severed. An ex-Borg human named Riley (Lori Hallier) wants  Voyager 's help to create a new collective on the planet in order to restore harmony. In the meantime, Riley and other ex-Borgs temporarily connect Chakotay to their collective in order to heal life-threatening wounds and, eventually, to use that connection to force  Voyager 's First Officer to help them. Fittingly, Chakotay's experience in "Unity" becomes crucial in Voyager 's early dealings with Seven of Nine.

Braga said after watching the promo for "Unity" he called other  Voyager  writer/producer Joe Menosky and co-creator Rick Berman "to make sure it wasn't a stupid idea." The consensus was that it was just the opposite. Braga said he and Berman "talked about it for a couple of hours and we just thought, 'This is a really cool idea. This could be really just the thing we need."

Seven, Ambassador of Borg

When Seven of Nine first comes aboard  Voyager , she isn't there as a friend. She first appears in "Scorpion, Part II," the season 4 premiere of  Voyager .

Upon entering the area of space dominated by the Borg — a necessary hurdle on their journey back home — the crew of  Voyager  discovers that the Borg have bitten off more than they can chew. A race of vicious extra-dimensional aliens known only as Species 8472 is waging war on the Borg and winning. Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) decides to use this to her advantage. After the Doctor (Robert Picardo) devises a technology that can defeat Species 8472, Janeway offers it to the Borg in exchange for safe passage through their space. The Borg assign Seven of Nine — a human assimilated when she was a child — to act as liaison to  Voyager 's crew.

Once Species 8472 is defeated, Seven of Nine predictably turns on the crew of  Voyager . She tells them their agreement is over and the Borg will assimilate the ship and her crew. Expecting the betrayal, Janeway signals for her secret plan to be put in motion. Elsewhere on the ship, the Doctor puts a neuro-transceiver on Chakotay's neck which — because of his previous experience with ex-Borg — the First Officer is able to use to connect with Seven and distract her while Lt. Torres (Roxann Dawson) cuts Seven's connection to the Collective.

Barbie of Borg

It didn't take long for some fans to call Seven of Nine " Barbie of Borg" among other, more explicit nicknames. The jokes suggested some fans thought Seven of Nine was brought on board mainly for sex appeal. From what we've heard from the creators and actors since  Voyager 's finale, it seems clear they weren't all that wrong. After all, while Brannon Braga's initial conception was just for a Borg crew member, when talking about that inspiration on the  Voyager  season 4 home release, he said it was co-creator Rick Berman who said "Make it a Borg babe."

Jeri Ryan has no illusions about how much sex appeal played into her character's popularity, but she also feels her character offered a lot more regardless. Speaking to  HuffPost  in 2012, Ryan said , "I don't have a problem with Seven's overtly sexual physical appearance, if only because of the way she was written and developed. If it was a crappy character, then OK. But she was so nuanced and beautifully written."

Ryan has a point. After all, once she's introduced on  Voyager , so many stories revolve around Seven and her relationships with the rest of the crew. Without a layered, interesting character, none of those stories would have been possible. Fans may have shown up for the "eye candy," but they stayed for the stories.

She was meant to die

Making recurring appearances on  Star Trek: Picard , Seven of Nine is one of the only  Voyager  regular characters to show up in the franchise after the show's finale. It's ironic, considering that Brannon Braga planned for her to be one of the only regular characters to not even survive  Voyager .

Speaking to  TrekCore  in 2013, Braga fielded a question about some fans feeling  Voyager  had "de-fanged" the Borg as villains. After talking about the Borg for a bit, he revealed his own ideas for Seven's fate: "I think Seven of Nine should have bit the dust. I think there had to be a real sacrifice for this crew getting home; a real blood sacrifice. Seven of Nine was, for me, designed to be a character that was gonna die tragically. I planned that."

He went on to describe how he planned for that death to take place, mentioning "Human Error," one of the final season's later episodes. Seven uses the holodeck to explore her human side, including a potential romance with Chakotay. As emotions begin to emerge, the Doctor discovers there's a Borg failsafe device within her — if she becomes too human, the implant will kill her. Braga said, "It was that moment in my mind that would set up the finale, where she realized she can't live here, can't live there."

For better or worse, Braga's concept got the thumbs down, and Seven continued her quest to become more human.

Seven vs. the Captain

Whle they start off as uneasy allies, the relationship between Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine eventually grows into something not unlike that between a mother and daughter. Behind the scenes, however, it seems clear that Mulgrew and Ryan were not the best of friends.

When asked about her relationship with Ryan at the 2014 Star Trek Vegas Con, Mulgrew was diplomatic, saying , "We did not have a deep friendship." Mulgrew implied she'd initially resented Ryan's casting, saying, "It was very clear to anyone with eyes in their head that Jeri Ryan's beauty and sexual appeal were an important part of the numbers. I had thought 'damn, we were going to forgo all of this with a female captain.' But the demographics proved the audience wanted more sex and they got it in that beautiful, talented woman."

On 2013's  Girl on Guy  podcast, Ryan opened up about how ugly things got. She didn't specifically name Mulgrew as the actor in question, but her hints make it seem impossible for it be anyone else (e.g. she says most of her scenes were with "this person"). She gave examples of the actor refusing to let makeup and wardrobe crew work with Ryan before closeups and in some cases saying their lines to Ryan "off-camera picking their nails, thumbing through a book... without even making eye contact."

Learning to date with the Doctor

When asked what her favorite episodes of  Voyager  were, Jeri Ryan has shared her  fond memories of episodes "when Seven was really starting to explore her humanity." In particular, she often cites season 5's "Someone to Watch Over Me."

Seven and Torres almost come to blows when the latter discovers that Seven has been observing and making notes on her and Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) in her study of mating rituals. When the Doctor suggests Seven should try dating on her own, the holographic physician becomes the reformed Borg's dating mentor. Among other things, he subjects Seven to a presentation reminiscent of a high school teacher's sex education lecture, brings her to the holodeck to try her hand at wooing holographic characters, teaches her to dance, and breaks into a sweet duet of "You Are My Sunshine."

Over the course of the episode, the Doctor realizes he's developing his own feelings for Seven. He's just about ready to open up about them when she tells him she will no longer need to be mentored because — after reviewing all the men on board — none are suitable as potential mates. The Doctor thanks Seven and keeps his longing to himself.

Some of the crew felt crowded by Seven

Robert Beltran was known for being honest — even while  Voyager  was still on the air — when he wasn't happy about something. And one of the things he wasn't happy about was how he felt Chakotay and other characters were short-changed once Seven of Nine came board.

Speaking to StarTrek.com  in 2012, Beltran said , "when the Seven of Nine character made her entrance, the focus changed... That was fine with me, but I think writers have an obligation to fill out all the characters if they're regular characters on a series. I think several of the characters were diminished — Chakotay and Tuvok and Kim and Neelix." He went on to say he felt Seven was easier to write because she wasn't fully human.

Ryan told the Girl on Guy  podcast she thought so much focus was put on Seven because, simply put, she was new. "Now the writers, who have been writing for the same seven characters for three years, are salivating for something new to write with," Ryan said. "Consequently, all the scripts revolved around Seven of Nine and her relationship with the other characters, of course."

She also said she was aware of some of the other cast's resentments and understood them, though the understanding apparently didn't make things easier. "When the new kid comes in and suddenly it's all about them. That was tough," Ryan said. "It really made it an unpleasant work experience. "

Icheb, the son she never had

Seven of Nine isn't the only ex-Borg to join  Voyager  on its quest back to Earth. In season 6's "Collective," the crew encounters a Borg Cube whose only survivors are children. At the end of the episode, four of the children come aboard  Voyager ,   where the Doctor uses the same techniques he used on Seven to remove most of the children's Borg implants. The oldest of the four is Icheb (Manu Intiraymi), a member of a race called the Brunali, who becomes a recurring character on Voyager.

We eventually learn that Icheb's assimilation into the Borg was somewhat unique. In "Child's Play," Icheb discovers he was genetically engineered by his parents with a deadly virus meant to eradicate the Borg. His parents willingly put him on a ship and steered him toward the Borg in the hopes they would assimilate him and subsequently be destroyed.

Unfortunately, Icheb is brutally taken away from Seven in the season 1  Star Trek: Picard  episode "Stardust City Rag." In a flashback, we learn Icheb (now played by Casey King) has been captured and his body is being harvested for its cybernetic parts. Seven interrupts the procedure, but Icheb is already dying and in excruciating pain. He begs Seven to kill him, which she does while sobbing.

Seven in the Mirror

One of the most well-loved stories of any  Star Trek  show is the original series episode "Mirror, Mirror" in which a mirror universe is revealed where the tyrannical Terran Empire replaces the Federation, and evil counterparts of the  Enterprise 's crew replace the ones with which we're more familiar. Subsequent series like  Deep Space Nine ,  Enterprise , and  Discovery  return to the mirror universe, though  Voyager  never got a chance. That's something IDW's 2019 one-shot comic  Star Trek: Voyager — Mirrors & Smoke  corrects.

In the mirror universe, Janeway is the Pirate Queen of the Delta Quadrant and is perfectly content to stay far from Earth, where she and her crew can plunder without anyone to interfere. In this universe, Annika Hansen was never assimilated by the Borg, but her parents were. When  Voyager  rescues her from Neelix and Kes, Annika discovers the Terrans know nothing about the Borg.

Ironically, while Annika isn't a Borg in this universe, she  still  betrays  Voyager . Shortly after she's rescued, she plots with the Doctor to take over the ship and kill anyone who doesn't cooperate. Their plans are foiled, and interestingly Annika's motivations for turning against them are never revealed. Though toward the end of the comic she refers to her captors as "the humans," suggesting she may be more than she appears.

She never expected to return

One of the most anticipated appearances of  Star Trek: Picard 's first season was the return of Seven of Nine. She saves Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) and his crew at the end of "Absolute Candor," and takes center stage in the following episode "Stardust City Rag." We learn that for years Seven has been a part of a group of vigilantes called the Fenris Rangers, trying to bring justice to the galaxy in the wake of the Romulan supernova.

As much of a success as Seven's return has proven to be, Jeri Ryan never thought it would happen. On the  Picard  after show  Ready Room , Ryan told host Wil Wheaton, "This has been a two-year process since this was first broached to me. And I didn't think it was ever going to really actually come to fruition." She said one of the series writers, James Duff, pitched the idea to her two years earlier, but she thought it was a joke.

Apparently, it wasn't until the 2018 Creative Arts Emmys when Ryan was shocked to discover her return to the role was actually a possibility. While she waited backstage,  Picard  co-creator Alex Kurtzman told her there was a lot of discussion about her in the series writers' room. Ryan's response? "And I was like 'What? Really? Okay. I guess it's actually happening.'"

Seven and Locutus, two of a kind

At first, it may seem strange for Seven of Nine to show up in  Star Trek: Picard . After all, the character wasn't around for  Star Trek: The Next Generation   and we've never seen the two characters meet before  Picard , but if you stop to think about it, Seven may have more in common with Picard than anyone he served with aboard the  Enterprise .

In the two-part TNG  episode "Best of Both Worlds," Picard is assimilated by the Borg and turned into Locutus. The Collective uses his memories and knowledge to kill Picard's Starfleet comrades. He's eventually saved by his crew, but the experience leaves deep scars. We see him suffering from it in subsequent episodes as well as in 1996's  Star Trek: First Contact .

While Seven was assimilated when she was a young girl and spent a much longer time with the Collective than Picard, they share this terrible bond with one another. This never comes through more clearly than in an exchange toward the end of "Stardust City Rag." Seven asks Picard if he thinks he regained his humanity once he was cut off from the Borg. He says he did. Seven asks, "All of it?"

Picard answers, "No. But we're both working on it. Aren't we?"

Seven says, "Every damn day of my life."

Star Trek: Voyagers Kes/Seven Of Nine Swap Was More Unique Than You Know

  • Kes and Seven of Nine's swap in Star Trek: Voyager was unique due to the franchise's consistent casts.
  • Other character swaps in previous Star Trek shows didn't accomplish their switch in the same way, usually leaving it off-screen.
  • Modern Star Trek series, like Discovery and Picard, have a different approach to swapping characters, focusing on serialized narratives.

Although it wasn't the franchise's first character swap, Star Trek: Voyager 's Kes (Jennifer Lien) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) switch was more unique than character changes in other Star Trek projects. Voyager 's cast of characters stayed mostly the same throughout the show's run, except for the departure of Kes and the introduction of Seven at the start of season 4. The swap happened over season 4's first two episodes, "Scorpion, Part II" and "The Gift," and was accomplished well, all things considered.

During "The Gift," Kes's latent mental abilities began to evolve rapidly thanks to Species 8472, to the point where she was a danger to the USS Voyager and her crew. As a result, Kes voluntarily left the ship and ascended to a higher plane of existence. She left behind Seven, who had just been rescued from the Borg Collective, and was convinced by Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) to embrace her transition back to humanity at the end of the episode. While it may seem surprising, this type of on-screen, narratively accomplished transition was rare for Star Trek TV shows .

The Complete Star Trek Timeline Explained

Star Trek's timeline spans a thousand years of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, with alternate realities and time travel galore.

Star Trek: Voyagers Kes/Seven Of Nine Swap Was Different From TNG And DS9

Voyager accomplished its character swap in a unique way.

Previous character swaps in other Star Trek projects had either happened off-screen or not been about switching one unique character for another . The two biggest character changes that happened in the franchise before Voyager were Dr. Pulaski (Diana Muldaur) taking over for Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) in season 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Ezri Dax (Nicole de Boer) replacing Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Both of these swaps had some similarities to Voyager 's Kes/Seven swap, but Voyager was distinct from both in a few important ways.

The on-screen, plot-supported switch of two characters hadn't happened in a Star Trek series before Voyager , and continued to be rare in the 1990s era of the franchise.

Dr. Pulaski's transition to and from the cast of Star Trek: TNG happened entirely off-screen both times. She was introduced without much fanfare in the first episode of season 2 and was gone by the first episode of season 3 in the same fashion. Likewise, although Ezri Dax was a different character from Jadzia Dax, she was also more of an extension of Jadzia than a completely unique character. The on-screen, plot-supported switch of two characters hadn't happened in a Star Trek series before Voyager , and continued to be rare in the 1990s era of the franchise.

Why Modern Star Trek Takes A Different Approach To Main Cast Rotation

Modern star trek series do things differently.

Unlike the classic Star Trek shows, however, newer series take a much different approach to swapping characters in and out of their main casts. Both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard went through several drastic main cast changes during their respective five and three seasons. While some key members of Discovery 's core cast of characters remained the same, many other members came and went, especially after the show's time jump to the 32nd century. Similarly, Picard completely overhauled its main cast in season 3 to bring in the former stars of Star Trek: TNG .

This seems to be the result of focusing on a serialized narrative rather than episodic storytelling . If certain New Trek characters were or were not important to the central plot of a season, they would be swapped in or out to accommodate. This is less the case with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , but even that show's more episodic narrative has seen some cast changes, like the death of Hemmer (Bruce Horak) in season 1. Modern Star Trek made a lot of changes to the franchise, and regular cast swapping similar to Star Trek: Voyager is one of them.

Star Trek: Voyagers Kes/Seven Of Nine Swap Was More Unique Than You Know

Memory Alpha

Kovin was an Entharan trader who dealt in weapons . He was capable of designing and making modifications to numerous weapons technologies in his lab at the Entharan colony planet in the Delta Quadrant .

In 2374 , Seven of Nine accused him of violating her in order to steal her nanoprobes . She noted that Kovin stunned her and used equipment in his lab to extract nanoprobes in her system. He denied the charges, and agreed to allow Tuvok to conduct an investigation . At first the investigation revealed that there were nanoprobes present in the lab.

Fearing that he would be arrested unjustly, he fled in his ship . Tuvok and The Doctor would discover that Kovin was innocent; when he fired a weapon to demonstrate it to Kathryn Janeway , it activated Seven's nanoprobes, causing Seven to create a false memory about her assimilation . When Janeway hailed Kovin to tell him that they believed that he was innocent, he didn't believe them, and fired on USS Voyager . This caused an overload in his weapons which caused an explosion that destroyed his ship, killing him. ( VOY : " Retrospect ")

Kovin was played by actor Michael Horton and his stunt double Chester E. Tripp III . Horton filmed his scenes on all days of production for this episode, between Tuesday 11 November 1997 and Wednesday 19 November 1997 , on Paramount Stage 8 , 9 , and 16 . His costume was later sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay. [1]

Kovin was named by Bryan Fuller . He named the character after a friend of his, Johnny Kovin. Since Fuller had "always thought it was such a cool name", he used it for this Star Trek character. ( Information from Larry Nemecek )
