Charlie Puth

Charlie Puth is hitting the road this spring and created a viral TikTok to share the news on Tuesday (Feb. 14).

On the social platform, the pop star started with layers of roaring applause before adding snippets of his hit singles “Attention” and the JungKook-assisted “Left and Right.” Then, he included narration by a female announcer before unveiling the finished product: “Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum singer-songwriter-producer Charlie Puth presents The Charlie Live Experience. See him live in concert across North America in 2023.”

The tour follows Puth’s series of One Night Only shows at the tail end of 2022, which saw him play an intimate run of theaters and smaller venues across the U.S. to finally debut his latest album Charlie live to his fans for the first time.

In December, the “That’s Hilarious” singer celebrated turning 31 by taking his romance with childhood friend Brooke Sansone public.

Charlie Puth is ready to take his self-titled album on the road this summer. On Tuesday, the TikTok favorite musician announced that he’ll be embarking on the Charlie Live Experience tour this May.

Puth will start his tour at Mexico’s Corona Capital Festival, and is set to make stops at venues including Austin’s Moody Amphitheater, New York’s Radio City Music Hall, and Los Angeles’ Greek Theater.

The North American tour follows his short “One Night Only” tour stops last November. It’s his full complete North American tour since 2018’s The Voicenotes Tour, when he was accompanied by Haille Steinfeld on the road.

Back in October, Puth caught up with Rolling Stone about creating his album on TikTok for all to see. His LP Charlie featured songs like “Light Switch,” “Left and Right” with Jung Kook, and “ I Don’t Think That I Like Her. “

Absolutely astonishing.

I’ve seen this man 4 times and each time I convince myself I need jaw surgery because of how hard my jaw hits the floor when he performs. He has the voice of an angel and the quirkiest personality. His shows aren’t just a place of music but a community of the kindest souls experiencing the best performance their eyes shall ever witness. I love and adore the energy he puts out and can say that he has and always will be my favorite artist. Whatever the ticket price is, it’s more than worth it. From the nosebleeds to the front of the pit, there is no such thing as bad seats.

HE IS AMAZING!!

This was my first concert and I had so much fun!! He has such an amazing personality and you can see it shine on stage! It was just overall an amazing performance!

MAGICAL EXPERIENCE

This was my first concert, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I love Charlie so much, I think he's very talented, I am looking forward to seeing him again, hoping this time I can get a closer seat to the stage. I was sad when the concert ended, because I wanted to keep listening to this magical voice that he has. I LOVE YOU CHARLIE.

My First Concert

This was my first concert and it was the best night I have ever had!! I love how Charlie explains how he makes his songs and what inspires them. I really loved the good energy, everyone was just having fun and singing along. I really hope he comes to the Bay Area again!

Charlie Puth @ The Greek

Wow! I was a casual fan of Charlie Puth but decided to see him live as I really do enjoy him. He completely shocked and impressed me with his performance and energy. You can tell he genuinely loves what he does and his passion is extremely obvious in the way he plays and sings his music. He was high energy the entire time and that was radiating onto the audience. It was actually a constant give and take of electric energy between him and the audience. Also just listening to him explain how his mind works and telling us about the conception behind his songs was one of the highlights. I wish more artists showcased that side of them. Everyone was SCREAMING for him and belting out the songs word for word. I had so much fun! I’m really glad I bought that ticket and I’d definitely see him again. Charlie Puth has a new fan in me!

so short it made us mad!

He performed for 1 hr 10 min tops! Came in late, left super early. Good stuff in between but could have used a guest artist to come out with him.

I love it !!!

I love Charlie : he was amazing He has incredible vocals and he is gorgeous Best concert ever : The only thing is that I wished it would had been longer Can’t wait for next time to see him again 🥰

Charlie Experience

The Charlie Puth experience starts from the moment he hits the stage to the last note he sings with this deep connection with the audience! And that vocal range is insane!

After attending a previous concert on Los Angeles, I noticed how friendly the Greek staff members were. The theater was nice, especially during the latter part of the evening.

Charlie Puth (born December 2, 1991) is an American pop singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist best known for featuring in Wiz Khalifa’s international No. 1 single “See You Again”, hailing from Rumson, New Jersey, U.S.

Born and raised in Rumson, New Jersey, Puth began to explore his musicality during high school where he started uploading acoustic song covers to YouTube. After graduating, the singer enrolled at Berklee College for Music by which time Puth had begun generating significant online attention for his videos. In October 2011 Puth’s national profile was raised to new levels with an announcement from Ellen DeGeneres that she had signed the singer and duet partner Emily Luther to her label. DeGeneres had heard the pair’s cover of Adele’s “Someone Like You”, which the duo later played on the show, as well as Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” and the self-penned “Break Again”.

Despite the exposure afforded Puth, the singer departed DeGeneres’ eleveneleven Records in 2013 and singed with Atlantic. Prior to the arrangement with Atlantic, Puth had recorded and self-released a pair of albums, “The Otto Tunes” (2010) and “Ego” 2013, however the records are only available through online music streaming services. In February 2015, Puth released his official debut single “Marvin Gaye, featuring guest vocals from pop singer Meghan Trainor. Rising to No. 61 on the Billboard 200 and topping the charts in New Zealand, the single proved an internationally popular release and introduced the singer to a worldwide market.

Puth enjoyed his greatest success to date however contributing to the Wiz Khalifa single “See You Again”, which topped the singles chart in the U.S., the UK, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Sweden as well as a host of other countries. The single was taken from the “Furious 7: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” in light of the recent death of actor Paul Walker and earned platinum certification in a number of countries. Later in 2015 the singer issued his debut EP “Some Type of Love”, which peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. Heatseekers Chart in May. Following the release Puth issued the single, “Nothing But Trouble”, featuring rapper Lil Wayne, which appeared on the soundtrack to the documentary “808: The Movie” in June 2015.

Live reviews

At Trees in Dallas, TX 3/11/16

Great show! Opening, Sophie Beem has got the voice, movies and looks for it is only a matter of time before she blows up. The following act was Phoebe Ryan which she had a couple of songs that were catchy, however I feel she is still working on her stage performance. It looked and felt like she was trying to hard on crowd interaction, but she was recording herself, so give it some time. Charlie Puth simply outstanding performance. He sound the same recorded or live. Between songs he took a moment or two and talked about different things from his background in music to how he came up with some of his songs (did not know "One Call Away" was wrote for his mother do to him buying a house and living out in LA). He seemed to be very humble and enjoyed talking to the crowd to the point of him grabbing a girl's cellphone to take a video from stage. Here is an article that happened at the show (@ Trees in Dallas 3/11/16)

I drove three and half hours one way for this show and it was worth the drive from Okla to TX. I'm in the 30-40 (male) age group if this might help. Buy your tickets now for his shows sellout quick.

At just 23, Charlie Puth seems to be making all the right moves in the music industry after featuring on Wiz Khalifa's global smash 'See You Again' and upcoming mega-hit 'Marvin Gaye' featuring Meghan Trainor. The pop and R & B singer/songwriter has a fairly androgynous voice that has been praised for its silky smooth quality and emotive undertones. There is definitely a fanbase gathering and as Charlie has been known on the scene for a few years, he has a following for his early tours.

He holds himself with a likeable confidence as it is pretty clear performing live is something he does not have a lot of experience with yet. There are a couple of awkward interludes between tracks and a few bum introductions yet in general it is a pacy show which showcases the vocal well. As he only has a couple of musicians joining him tonight, there really is nowhere to hide and Charlie has to stand up straight to this as he plays his first EP 'Some Type of Love' in full. It is suitably emotive and allows him real freedom to show off the voice and this goes over well along with an acoustic version of 'See You Again' to end a performance from a very promising vocalist.

I have loved listening to Charlie since before he was even famous. He inspires me so much, and I really look up to him because he is an incredible performer and he worked so hard to get to where he is today.

However.... last night I was really disappointed. That was my third Charlie Puth concert, and the only one that I’ve ever had the privilege of sitting in the front row at. It was my birthday present to sit so close to the stage, so I made him a sign that I worked really hard on. The moment Charlie came on stage, he saw my sign from the corner of his eye but wouldn’t read it. He just said “I’ve seen that girl and her sign before” and blew it off. It was rude. Like he wouldn’t even take 2 seconds to even see what it said! And I’ve NEVER made him a sign before, so I’m not sure what he was talking about. Then throughout his performance, he wouldn’t acknowledge his fans. He just did what he had to do and then left. It was so quick. I don’t know if Charlie was in a bad mood or something, but it was very disappointing considering all the money and effort all these people put in to see him.

It was amazing! Charlie is so freaking cute to see in person and all of his facial expression though. He was an exquisite live performer, i enjoy all of the songs so so much! The musicians were also a good package. Love them. Although i must say i was so disappointed about Full Color, i think they wasn't professional enough to organise the crowd. There were rumours that the people who had festival tickets could enter the golden priority area. No wonder the golden priority area became too crowded, i think.

I hate to say that the equipments were also not good enough. I was standing under the big speakers and it didn't produce a good quality of sound. It was deafening.

And also disappointed for the 'no shirtless' rule. It was freaking ridiculous. We all knew that Charlie was stifling hot, poor him that he couldn't take his shirt off.

Overall, it was okay. I love to see him again near the future but obviously not from the same promotor. Although thanks to Full Color for bringing him to Jakarta.

It was a great show me and my mom went she didn't have a great time because there was some girls behind her that kept on kicking her in the back but all in all Charlie was great and Shawn was amazing if I had another chance to go see them both I would hopefully next time I can be closer or possibly meet them they are both so down to earth especially Shawn he's such a gentleman as he says in his songs I've seen him be a gentleman in so many of his videos and I believe Charlie is a gentleman too he's so sweet and funny I will hold on to last nights memory forever and ever I woke up this morning and couldn't talk I lost my voice screaming for both of them but I don't care it was worth it oh and I also bought a Shawn Mendes blanket that is so soft I love it

This is the best concert I have been to!!! I have been to many concerts and this one is the best by far. Charlie puts on a great show and has a great time with the audience. He lets you sing along and makes it so much fun. I went the first night in Toronto and it was amazing and I think I need to go to another one.I love all of his songs and I listen to them 24/7 no joke. His songs mean so much to me. When I was getting through the hardest part of my life his songs really did help me. I just want to say thank you for what you have done because it really does help me every single day just reminding me that every day is a great day. And I really hope to meet you one day. Thank you for inspiring me so much!!!

I seen Charlie Puth at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on Monday, September 17. It honestly wasn’t really a concert, it was more of a Q & A from moderator who asked him really good questions that most people who interview him don’t ask. The setting was very intimate, only 200 people seated. Charlie did sing 3 of his hit songs at the end of the Q & A...From Voicenotes. He did this all with no band. Singing with just his keyboard. He did an amazing job. His voice is amazing live. This was my first time seeing him. I definitely plan on going to see him in concert next time he’s in LA. It was definitely worth the money to see him.

AMAZING!!!! I loved it so much! I loved the band he was playing with. Such great teamwork. And how real was he was in the concert was cool too. He wasn’t just a celebrity preforming, he was a person, just like us singing to us, wanting us to have an amazing time. And I did have an amazing time. My mom and I really enjoyed him playing and he ever comes to my town again, I would see him again. (Pun intended) I love his music and his song writing style. And would love to see him live in concert again. Thank you for letting me write a review.

Oh My Gosh!!! At the concert, Charlie Puth was on another level. He sang all song as perfectly as the recorded ones! His high note gave me the goosebump. He knew how to serve his fans. He took his shirt off!! That was so memorable. And the best one is when he sang see you again. Even before he started to sing, I had already cried.

The best concert I have ever had in my life. Thanks Charlie Puth. You will always be in my heart and other puthinatorz's hearts.

Thanks for that memorable night. It was really valuable for my life.

Charlie Puth and Hailee Steinfeld put on a great show. Singing new songs along with their big hits they made the crowd go wild and made everyone so happy to be sharing this experience. Prior to this concert, in which I took my children to see, I knew very little of either artist but after listening to them and seeing their performance I can say that I will be wanting to listen to more

Also, the location for the concert was perfect. I would definitely go there again for another show.

'Charlie The Live Experience' Tour 2023's Potential Setlist

Puth is yet to release the official setlist he will play on his upcoming 2023 tour. However, fans assumed that the songs he performed at the recent Festival Corona Capital might also be included in his upcoming concerts.

For what it's worth, the singer started his number during the weekend show with, "Charlie Be Quiet!" He also performed several hit tracks including "Light Switch," "How Long," "We Don't Talk Anymore," and "Left and Right."

He completed the night by singing additional songs like "Suffer," "Done for Me," "That's Hilarious," "BOY," "One Call Away," "Attention," and "See You Again."

Best experience ever.

I have never been more entertained. I loved listening to him sing. I just loved everything. His amazing voice. My great seats. I have never in my life loved something more. Can’t wait for the next tour!! Hopefully he comes to Calgary next time!

I’ve been a Charlie puth fan for years now and this concert definitely did not disappoint! Firstly, Alexander Stewart was phenomenal. I didn’t know who he was at first, but after listening to some of his songs, I quickly became a fan. Moving on, Charlie Puth was also spectacular! He was enthusiastic, loud, and passionate in his singing. He let the audience sing a lot which was honestly quite fun because I was literally screaming LOL. There was a slight issue with the microphone but they fixed it really quickly and he sang a part of the song again to compensate! Overall, 1000/10. I would definitely go to one of his concerts again! I already miss it 🥲 please come to Vancouver again!!

Excellent experience

I love this concert, I am officially a fan of Charlie Puth. He is very talented singer and songwriter.

Disappointed...

Pros: 1. Good music selection 2. Alexander Stewart was the concert opener and he was amazing, with good vocals and enthusiasm! Keep up the excellent work and don't lose your passion for music! 3. Charlie did do encore Cons: 1. Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre Seats uncomfortable 2. Lines to enter the venue were long, and many attendees were not admitted nor seated at 1930 hr, despite arriving early to queue up 3. Charlie Puth didn't seem too enthusiastic, and a lot of the songs were "audience led"while he kept quiet; some of us preferred his singing instead, because we paid tickets to see him live; we know that he's touring and he may be tired, but he seemed to have half assed the concert. 4. Sound and technical issues, dead air for more than a minute My friends and I are super fans of Charlie, but most probably won't attend another of his concerts, again.

It was the greatest concert ever!

I loved all the songs Charlie had prepared for all of us, loved every single second of them, very enjoyed with my mom :) I hope he comes to Vancouver in the future!

Amazing night!

I've never been to a concert at UBC Thunderbird, but I had an amazing time. The sound was good, my seats were good. Charlie's amazing! Please come back to Vancouver again!

INVIGORATING INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE

Charlie Puth is an absolutely phenomenal artist. He captured the entire theatre in awe and incredulity at his amazing talent and visual aesthetic on stage. He made personal effort to engage with his fans and the crowd, and when the night ended, he had left us all craving more. His opening star Alexander Stewart was also a next level addition to the show. 10/10 performance.

Honestly hype

I am not a hardcore Charlie fan and mostly attended before my sister needed someone to go with. Honestly it was a lot more exciting for me than I thought it would be. My sister and I loved how he was able to bring us back to his process and work through it with us to show us how he has come up with some of his songs. It felt like a really personal experience. It felt more of a hangout than a concert and it was a really comfortable atmosphere. His performance was always at 100%. He seemed to never tire and was good at engaging the audience at the venue.

His voice is amazing ❤️

Love he sings his old songs, it reminds me of my college days before🙂

Great Performance, SUB-par audio

I don't know why so many of the concerts have sub frequencies on the bass and drum so high as to make the whole sound mix so muddy. It is a shame to go see a performer, like Charlie Puth who is giving a good performance, have his show be degraded by bad audio. This has become so common that I frequently hesitate to buy tickets. I'm tempted to stay home and watch an online video of their other concerts which have vastly superior audio mixes compared to what I experience when I attend a concert.

By Jules LeFevre

Charlie Puth will head out on his debut Australian tour later this year. The US pop singer and perfect pitch-haver will play his first local show at the Riverstage in Brisbane on Friday, 27th October, before playing Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena and finally Sydney’s Aware Super Theatre on Wednesday, 1st November.

The tour, billed as the ‘The “Charlie” Live Experience’, comes off the back of the release of his 2022 album, Charlie, which featured singles like ‘Loser’, ‘Left and Right’ (featuring BTS’ Jung Kook ). It’s Puth’s third studio album, following 2018’s Voicenotes.

Charlie Puth: ‘Loser’

Puth’s latest release is the country-tinged single ‘That’s Not How This Works’, featuring country music duo Dan + Shay . The three teamed up in early 2020 and wrote the track over Zoom, Puth explained in an Instagram post when it was released.

“I went through many changes musically in my life, but always kept this song in my back pocket because I knew how special it was,” Puth wrote . “It was after all the song that propelled me into the next phase of my life,” wrote Puth. “It was the song that healed me.”

“With all of these feelings that I hadn’t come face to face with before, I finally mustered up the courage to put a melody against them,” Puth continued. “When you listen to this song, I hope you feel what I felt when I wrote it — a sense of relief.”

The Starting Line on Getting a Taylor Swift Shout-Out in ‘The Black Dog,’ 22 Years After Pop-Punk Band’s Breakout: ‘It’s an Unexpected Showering of Love’

taylor swift and the starting line tortured poets black dog

There’s no golden ticket quite like the golden ticket of finding your name in the lyrics of a Taylor Swift song. It’s one thing if you’re Charlie Puth, and already on a list of Spotify’s 150 top monthly artists. But for another musical artist name-checked in Swift’s album “ The Tortured Poets Department ,” the impact stands to be much more impactful. The pop-punk band the Starting Line gets mentioned twice in the song “The Black Dog,” and suddenly nostalgia for (or newfound curiosity about) the Philadelphia-based group is skyrocketing.

Popular on Variety

The Starting Line actually enjoys the distinction of being the only other artist to get mentioned twice by name in the album lyrics. Take that, Puth, Blue Nile, Patti Smith, Dylan Thomas, Clara Bow and Stevie Nicks! (Actually, it could be three times, since, beyond the two mentions in “The Black Dog,” the phrase “the starting line” also pops up separately in the song “Fresh Out the Slammer,” but it isn’t used as a band reference there, just a figure of speech… or is it? )

The name pops up in the first chorus:

I just don’t understand how you don’t miss me In The Black Dog When someone plays The Starting Line and you jump up But she’s too young to know this song That was intertwined in the magic fabric of our dreaming Old habits die screaming

And wait, in the second round, they’re back:

“I feel like it’s trying to impart some sort of nostalgia of the time and the kind of music that we were making at that time, and I’m very flattered that we were the representation of that,” Vasoli says.

Swift would have been turning 13 the year “Best of Me” came out, a number that obviously holds a special place for her, even possibly as an age. And even though the song was a national hit with emo fans, establishing the Starting Line as Warped Tour material, the group remains hometown heroes in the Philadelphia area, not far from where Swift grew up, which may solidify a nostalgic appeal for her.

Yet the lyrics also clearly establish that excitement over sharing “Best of Me” was something that she and the person she just broke up with in the song had in common… and Swift doesn’t often lie in her material. So the question riling fans up has been: If it’s not fiction, is it more likely to be about Matty Healy or Joe Alwyn?

“I’m certainly getting a crash course in the backstory between the characters that are involved in this thing,” says Vasoli, not picking any sides himself. “So it’s been a pretty fascinating study in fandom, for sure.”

Lending obvious weight to the argument in favor of Healy, the frontman for the 1975, is that he actually sang “Best of Me” twice in concert while dating Taylor Swift , at least by the timelines laid out on the world wide web. Or at least he sang a snippet of the Starting Line’s signature song at a show April 21, 2023 and again on May 3 of last year. “Shout-out to people in their thirties,” Healy quipped after performing the song excerpt. Now, it’s not easy to say conclusively that no one else who has split with Swift in recent years was a major emo-head, too, but the Internet is just sayin’.

When Healy started showing his love for the Starting Line in concert last spring, “we heard about it, but it certainly didn’t get the kind of attention that this did. It seems like now people are kind of checking out those YouTube videos of him covering that song a little bit more, and there’s a little bit more investigation to be had about them. At the time it was just sort of a cool thing that was passed around between the guys, but didn’t make it much further past that.”

(Arguing against the theory that “The Black Dog” is about Healy, though: Based on photographs Jack Antonoff posted of studio sessions from last year, fans believe the song was recorded in mid-May 2023. Which would lend itself to a hypothesis that it’s really about Alwyn, and that she played the song for Healy, who was then inspired to cover “Best of Me” in concert. A tangled web.)

But they wouldn’t be playing “Best of Me” over the PA in a metal bar, so we can probably at least rule the Paris possibility out, right? “I don’t know. You know, we’re heavier than you would think,” Vasoli counters. “We surprise people with our heaviness once we get up there.”

But he doesn’t have any personal knowledge of any of the Black Dog geo-location possibilities. “No, the only black dogs I’ve met are just good boys and girls out there at the dog park,” he says. “Your guess is as good as mine on that one.”

The Starting Line only has two shows on the books at present: a gig at the Novo in Los Angeles on the first day of summer, June 21, followed much further down the line by a set at the When We Were Young festival Oct. 19. The Starting Line actually played quite a few shows in 2023; these were the most the band had done in about a quarter-century.

Could they book a lot more now, and bill themselves as one of the few Swift-endorsed rock ‘n’ roll bands of their ilk in the world?

“You know, it’s been sort of a point of conversation of, how much do you lean into something like this?” Vasoli admits, a little cagey even with himself about how much to be seen as taking advantage of it. “Because something like this is not something you really plan for in your music career,. The reverberations have been very big and we’re just sort of trying to accept it with gratitude at this point, sitting back and just seeing what happens from it.”

Although the singer says those two concert dates “are it for now, there’s gonna be more that’s coming down the pike and more that’s getting booked. The vast majority of the band has day jobs that keep them obligated to stay home a little bit, more than some of the other bands. So we don’t hit the road for too long on a regular basis, but we’re trying to get into a rhythm where we can do more of it.”

He also says new music will be heard from the group, for the first time since a 2015 EP.

“There’s been an uptick in us playing together, and a really great interpersonal dynamic between the band members recently that has been very creative and inspirational, playing together recently. So we’ve been into a creative process writing new music since last year. We’re just collecting everything and figuring out the best way to get that out there. But we’re generating music and have been for a bit of time. With us trying to get back into a more usual pace with the band, after all this time, it’s nice that we’re getting a little bit of light on us at this moment, especially given that we’re engaging more than ever since like 2007, when we kind of let our foot off the gas.”

Sample comments on Reddit threads about the Starting Line’s name-check: “I am losing my millennial mind over this reference.” “This one was for the elder emo swifties.” “I screamed! They were my absolute favorite band in high school. My husband and I still listen to them all the time.” “All the elder emo millennials screaming: One of us, one of us.” “That moment when you realize you’re a musical influence to one of the biggest stars on the planet.” “Drop the (Starting Line) cover of the song immediately.”

And: “THIS IS THE MOST PENNSYLVANIA THING THIS WOMAN HAS EVER DONE. i’m so happy for you guys.”

(For those who really pay attention to both intersecting worlds, a joint fan noted: “Funny to think the Starting Line and Jack’s first band Steel Train were both on Drive Thru Records.”)

The singer still seems wonderstruck, to borrow a Swiftian word, about this stroke of recognition. “It’s a trip man, for sure. I can be nothing but really grateful and humbled by this whole thing. And it’s nice that I even get to speak with someone like you about our group in any capacity. So very happy about it.”

And if more dates are indeed in the offing as a result of this? “Please, everybody come check our band out. If it’s good enough for the name drop, come check out the goods.” He is suddenly abashed at what he just said. “You don’t have to print that part. That sounds so weird.” Vasoli can be forgiven for a little enthusiasm: Being embedded in the document that the whole world is scanning — a lyric sheet — is the kind of thing that can make somebody jump up.
