Reviews from fellow travelers.
This is an excellent activity to do while visiting the Denali area. The ziplines carry you through and above the trees and provide beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The adventure starts miles before the ziplines begin when you board an ATV driven by your guide to take you to the course. Our guides were personable and funny, as well as safety-conscious.
Great way to learn about the area and have FUN! What a blast! My husband and I had a side by side and really enjoyed the entire adventure. The views were out of this world. Our guides Megan and Haley were quite educated on the area and were willing to answer all kinds of questions about the area, plants, trees, rocks, history, land formations… Plan to leave with a wee bit o’ dirt EVERYWHERE! We loved the guided ATV excursion and were very happy we chose the longer one. We also purchased the Video footage.
My family of 7 had the most amazing time. Even though it was raining, it barely affected our view of all the mountains and scenery around us. The jeeps were in good condition, our tour guides, Tommy and Noah were both very funny and told great stories as we drove. We learned so much about Alaska and just made it a very good experience. We saw a ton of wildlife too such as eagles, moose, beavers, and a porcupine! Of course seeing wildlife is not guaranteed, but we went on the tour that leaves at 6:30 and got very lucky with wildlife seeing. Totally recommend this tour.
Fantastic experience with great guides. My husband and I completed the zipline experience and it was fantastic and fun. We would highly recommend this activity. We had great views and had two amazing guides, Charsti and Emily. They practiced the highest level of safety and both had great senses of humor which made the experience extremely enjoyable. This would be a great family activity.
My husband and I went on this ATV tour, while on our land tour, in Alaska. We had a blast! We’re in our 60’s. The guys were great!!! They made sure everyone knew what to do and that everyone was safe. They were adamant about safety! We stopped at certain locations, during the tour. The guides gave information about the area and we we’re able to take pictures. The guides were friendly and personable. We would definitely take this ATV tour again!!!
Denali Jeep excursion is a must when visiting Denali National Park and Preserve! We did the 7:30am tour on 7/30/22 and it exceeded our expectations. Patrick and Anna were awesome!!! My husband and I throughly enjoyed listening to Patrick talk about everything the knowledge just blew me away. Both Anna and Patrick were extremely helpful with answering all the questions asked and taking pictures of who ever asked. It’s also wonderful to drive the Denali Hwy in something that’s not ours… This Excursion is a must I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!!

Backpacking Denali National Park – 7 Day

" * " indicates required fields
This 7-day, 20+ mile backpacking adventure includes 5-full days of backpacking along massive glaciers, past wild creeks, and through virgin wilderness in this most amazing and virtually unexplored area of Denali National Park. Not only does this experience include float plane access via a flight-seeing tour of the mighty Ruth Glacier, it also provides backpackers the opportunity to experience Denali National Park in a way that few ever have.
Our 7-day backpacking trip in Denali National Park is a shorter, but no less spectacular, version of our amazing 10-day adventure through the biggest mountains in North America and the crown jewel of the National Park system! With float plane access from Anchorage, amazing tundra hiking, and unparalleled views of America’s highest summit (after all, you’ll be only 17 miles from the 20,310′ peak), this trip is both suitable for a novice Alaska backpacker yet challenging enough for the seasoned wilderness traveler.
Your trip begins today in Anchorage, Alaska. You’ll be staying at the Aloft Anchorage Hotel. You can arrive anytime and transfer to the hotel on their complimentary shuttle. Depending on your arrival time, the remainder of the day is yours to relax after your flight or to explore some of the city’s notable sites including the Anchorage Museum of History & Art or the city Park Strip. This afternoon, you’ll meet your guide at 5pm for an orientation and gear check, followed by a group dinner featuring gourmet pizza and local craft brews. The orientation will include a discussion of the route, an introduction to our unique style of Alaska wilderness travel, a familiarization of the principles of Leave No Trace, and a conversation about traveling safely in bear country.
This morning after a healthy breakfast at our B&B, we’ll make our way over to Lake Hood Seaplane Base, the busiest float-plane airport on earth, where we’ll board a float-plane bound for the Denali National Park and our home for the next 5 nights. This 1 hour scenic flight will take us over alpine tundra, braided rivers, and cascading waterfalls. We’ll enjoy spectacular views of Denali, the highest peak in North America as we travel up the mighty Ruth Glacier, to the entrance of the Great Gorge – the deepest trench on earth! Our skilled bush pilot will then take us down to a small lake nestled in a cleft between the Ruth and Tokositna Glaciers, where we will unload our gear on a small beach and then wave the airplane goodbye. We’ll set up camp near the lake, bask in the new-found solitude, and then take a short afternoon hike.
We’ll spend the next 4 days headed doing a 20+ mile circuit. Our route will take us through gun sight passes, over open tundra benches, down spectacular creeks, and along big Alaska Range glaciers. We’ll camp near small lakes, drink from alpine streams, and walk through country that has seen few human footsteps. We’ll bask in the majesty of the Alaska Range and scan mountain sides for black & grizzly bears as we hike through north America’s crown jewel, completely immersed in the wild. When the weather permits, views of north America’s highest mountain range will dominate our panorama and we’ll savor the incomprehensible vastness of Alaska. By the afternoon of day 6, we’ll arrive back at our final camp near the lake, and we’ll spend our last evening truly enjoying our final moments of solitude in Denali.
After a celebratory tundra breakfast and coffee, our bush pilot will arrive at the lake by early afternoon to extract us from the wilderness. Our flight path will take us down the massive Ruth Glacier, over the Tokosha Mountains, along the mighty Susitna River, and back to Anchorage by early afternoon. If you’re returning home from Anchorage this evening, please schedule home-bound flights for after 8pm.
Please note that occasionally weather conditions prevent us from flying into our basecamp location in Denali National Park. Given the schedule limitations encountered when our air service provider faces weather delays, there are few options available to fly after our scheduled time. If weather looks to be improving AND the air service can accommodate a later flight, we will wait in Anchorage as long as possible. However, If we aren’t able to fly into Denali National Park on day one, the itinerary will revert and the venue will change to Lake Clark National Park. Please download the detailed itinerary on this page for more information.

Alaska Factor: The Real Deal
While Alaska Alpine Adventures endeavors to follow our itineraries as written, odds are in fact slim that you actually will during the camping portion of this trip. The expeditionary factors at play quite often compel our guides to deviate from the written itinerary. Guide considerations could include weather conditions, group preference, individual ability, specific safety considerations, or unforeseeable circumstances; collectively what many have called “The Alaska Factor.” Flight times into and out of the wilderness may also vary based on any number of similar factors. Therefore we strongly suggest that you approach any adventure in Alaska with an open mind.

Trip Reviews
One of the reasons I chose AAA was the fact that I didn’t need to worry about logistics.Everything that was promised was delivered 100 percent. I hope that in a couple of years I’ll come back and do the Lake Clark trip, and yes I’ll be traveling with AAA.
Patrick Cody
It was terrific. LOVED IT. Love Alaska. And the pre-trip responsiveness of Dan & Aaron was very helpful. I have recommended Alaska Alpine Adventures to others.

FAQ: Denali National Park Tours
In this last section, we’ve answered some essential questions and provided some of our top travel tips for your trip to Denali! From the best time to visit to whether or not you should go on the Denali bus tour or one of the adventure tours we provided above, we’ve got you covered.
What is the Best Tour of Denali National Park?
The pinnacle of Denali National Park tours has to be the remarkable Denali Flightseeing Tour . Climbing aboard a small aircraft, you are whisked into the skies, where the grandeur of North America’s tallest peak and surrounding snow-capped mountain range unfolds in breathtaking clarity beneath you.
This tour provides an unrivaled perspective, revealing hidden glacial valleys, pristine alpine lakes, and the sheer scale of the Alaskan wilderness. From the safety and comfort of your seat, you’ll be treated to a narrated journey that covers vast tracts of untouched nature.
The flightseeing tour garners unanimous praise for offering a once-in-a-lifetime viewing experience that simply can’t be matched from the ground. Not to be biased, but if we were to plop down in Alaska right now , we would be getting on a bush plane around Denali!
Is a Denali National Park Tour Worth It?
A tour of Denali National Park is well worth it for anyone looking to experience the raw beauty of one of America’s wildest national parks !
Whether you opt for a bus tour, which affords you comfortable and expansive views of the landscape and wildlife past Mile 14, or an adventure tour that gets your blood pumping, a tour is the #1 way to see the park.
Without a guided tour, visitors will be limited to Denali Park Road which only consists of the first 14 miles and severely limits the amount of wildlife and landscape you will see.
Plus, most tours include local guides who can provide interesting facts and insights into the park’s history as well as mindblowing stories! The first time we visited, our guide told us all about a landslide that just missed his bus full of people and stranded them for an entire day.
Having been to Denali more than a half dozen times now, we will never return without a tour.
How Much Does a Denali National Park Tour Cost?
On average, Denali National Park tours may start from around $90 for a short trip and can go up to $200+ for a comprehensive, full-day tour with narrated guidance. Adventure tours tend to be more expensive, ranging from $140 to $200+, considering they often include specialized equipment and more personalized experiences.
However, the cost of a Denali National Park tour can vary significantly depending on the type of tour, length, and the level of luxury you’re looking for.
For those wanting an immersive experience, flightseeing tours, which offer aerial views of the park, can range from $200 to $500+. Keep in mind prices fluctuate with the season and demand, so booking early can often secure a better rate. And despite the cost, visitors who opt for a tour will rarely remember what they spent, but will always remember what they saw and heard!
What Should I Pack for a Denali National Park Tour?
Denali is exceedingly guilty of its unpredictable weather, so it’s important to have some items that will ensure comfort and readiness for any adventure that comes your way. Here’s a list of essentials we’d suggest bringing along regardless of when you decide to visit:
- Weather-Appropriate Clothing : Layers are key. Pack moisture-wicking base layers , a fleece or down mid-layer, and a waterproof outer layer.
- Sturdy Hiking Boots : Ensure they are well broken in before your trip to avoid blisters! Columbia has some great options.
- Daypack : For carrying snacks, water, and other essentials during your excursions. This Osprey 26L backpack is my favorite!
- Binoculars : To spot wildlife from a distance without disturbing their natural habitat. This 25×70 set is some of the best I’ve ever used.
- Sunglasses and Sunscreen : Even in colder weather, the sun can be intense, especially when reflecting off snow.
- Insect Repellent : Mosquitoes in Alaska can be bothersome, particularly in the summer months.
- Reusable Water Bottle : Staying hydrated is important, especially at higher altitudes! This LifeStraw bottle has two filters and has kept me from getting sick all over the world.
- Camera with Extra Batteries : Cold weather can drain batteries quickly, so extras are a must for capturing all the scenic views.
- Snacks : Energy bars, nuts, and other portable food can keep you fueled during the day, just don’t bring more than you will consume in a day. Remember, food attracts unwanted attention from animals!
- First Aid Kit : Including personal medications and items like bandages and pain relievers.
- Bear Spray : For safety, especially if venturing into backcountry areas. You’ll need to pick this up in Alaska since you can’t fly with it (even in your checked luggage).
- A Map and Compass or GPS : If you plan on doing any hiking or unguided trips within Denali, these are a must.
- Headlamp or Flashlight : With extra batteries for any low-light situations.
- Thermal Hat and Gloves : Morning and evening temperatures can be frigid, even in summer.
Always check the weather forecast and prepare for unexpected changes before your trip!
What is the Best Month to See Denali?
The optimal time to visit Denali National Park to ensure the best chance of witnessing Mount Denali and the local wildlife is during the brief summer months, particularly from June to late August .
The warmest conditions occur in July, which is the time most likely to afford clear views of the mountain. However, we’ve also visited Denali in the middle of July when there was nothing but rain and clouds for two weeks straight and at the same time in September when we had perfectly clear views of Denali.
Typically, between June and August is best for wildlife spotting and the weather is supposed to be at its best for the year with lots of sunshine, but don’t be surprised if you end up with less-than-preferable conditions.
How Many Days Do You Need to See Denali National Park?
In our opinion, we usually recommend a minimum of 2-3 days to explore the park’s vast landscape and enjoy a variety of experiences without feeling rushed.
This allows sufficient time for an adventure tour through the park to see wildlife, day hikes, ranger-led programs, and possible flightseeing tours (weather permitting). Those with a penchant for leisurely exploration or who desire to undertake extended backcountry adventures may opt for a longer visit, potentially spanning a week or more, to fully immerse themselves in the wild beauty of Denali.
We usually visited for 2 days or so at a time, but some of the people we met staying at Teklanika River Campground at Mile 29 of Denali Park Road were staying for over a week! They were there to go fishing, do some day hiking, take a flightseeing tour, etc.
So, depending on what you want to do, you may need more or less time in the park.
What Kind of Wildlife Can I See on a Denali National Park Tour?
On a Denali tour, visitors may spot grizzlies and black bears foraging for berries, herds of caribou running, moose roaming the open landscapes, or Dall sheep on the rocky mountainsides. Foxes, wolves, and lynxes are more elusive but thrilling to witness!
We were fortunate enough to see all of these animals during our visits in July and September, but of course, every visit will be different.
Additionally, the park is home to numerous bird species such as golden eagles, ptarmigans, and wheatears. Sightings are never guaranteed, but early mornings and evenings (particularly in the hours surrounding dawn and dusk) often provide the best opportunities for wildlife viewing.
Is a Denali Bus Tour Worth It?
A bus tour in Denali National Park is undoubtedly worthwhile! Not only does it reduce personal vehicle traffic, supporting the park’s conservation efforts, but the knowledgeable drivers also offer insightful commentary about the park’s history, geology, and wildlife.
With their expertise, you’re more likely to spot animals and learn about their habitats. We were shocked at how many animals we didn’t see right in front of our eyes when we were navigating the first 14 miles of Denali Park Road on our own versus when we were on a bus tour!
Bus tours also provide access to areas of the park that private vehicles cannot reach, significantly expanding your range of exploration and increasing your chances of memorable wildlife encounters. Moreover, they come with the convenience of not having to navigate or park, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes around you.
Whether you choose one of the narrated tour buses tailored to educating visitors or a non-narrated transit bus which gives more flexibility for hikers, a bus tour is a gateway to the full breadth of experiences Denali offers.
Do I Need Reservations for Denali National Park?
Reservations for Denali National Park are highly recommended, particularly if you’re planning to visit during the peak summer months . The first time we visited, we wanted to rent bikes and ride through the park, which was only made possible because I reserved the two bike spots on the Eielson Visitor Center transit bus months in advance.
Accommodations within the park, such as campgrounds and the limited rooms at the Denali Park lodges, often book up many months in advance. Additionally, bus, ATV, and flightseeing tours, which are the primary means of seeing the park, fill up very quickly, so it’s advisable to book these as early as possible.
Even backcountry permits for those wishing to venture into the wilderness require planning ahead as there are limits on the number of people allowed in each area per day. Reservations help ensure that you have a spot and can help in planning your Alaska itinerary more effectively.
What City is Closest to Denali National Park?
While technically Healy is the closest city to Denali, we wouldn’t call it much of a city at all. It’s home to a small population of under 1,000 people and primarily serves as the gateway to Denali National Park. The next closest city is Fairbanks , about 110 miles northeast, which has an international airport and 10x the accommodation, restaurant, and shop options.
The small town of Healy is only about 11 miles north of the Denali Park entrance and provides a very limited variety of services, lodging options, and dining establishments for travelers seeking proximity to their Denali adventure.
Can I Visit Denali National Park on an Alaska Cruise?
Certainly, you can visit Denali National Park as part of an Alaskan cruise shore excursion! Hollan America Line offers land tours that include Denali as a key highlight, including up to 3 nights at their very own private resort.
These tours frequently provide transportation from the ship to the Park and might involve a train ride along the Alaska railroad , offering scenic views en route.

Alaskan Adventures
Denali National Park
So while I briefly walked part of the national Park when I did the Horseshoe Lake Trail . Today was destined to be longer adventure. The excursion takes you up to the visitors center and then by special addition of park ranger deep into the park towards Primrose Ridge.
It did not take long to spot our first moose for the trip. A mother happily munching on the roadside as they often do. The calf was allegedly close by but I never spotted it.
Most guides, bus drivers etc will stop if they can but it doesn’t always happen nor does it mean the wildlife is on your side of the bus. They are also wild which often results in the scampering away. It’s a hit n miss.
By the end of the tour we were told we had fared pretty well to see as much as we did. We certainly could not complain about the weather and joined the “Less than 30% club”, that ever actually see the mountain.
Denali Mountain:
There are some tragic tales and amazing stories around this famous Mt. With all the busses and shuttles we used I would have expected to hear the same old stuff. But while there are number of major tales repeated, each guide has a slightly different slant or additional piece of information. The tour guides really do do a great job.
I call this image above Orca rock not because it is but because I forgot what its called and because it reminded me of Orcas breaching and returning to the sea.
Dall sheep:
We only saw these twice in our hole Alaska trip. Both times about this distance away. However it still counts 😉
Parks is probably the reason why Alaska is available to you and me. Spare a moment for what is an amazing story in itself.

The 12 Best US National Parks For Your Next Backpacking Adventure
W ith over 420 national parks in the U.S., there is definitely an abundance of adventure awaiting backpackers and avid nature lovers. Of course, whether you want to enjoy some first-class backcountry camping, take your hiking expertise to the next level, or just appreciate nature and unplug from it all, there is undoubtedly a true wanderer's experience beyond each and every park entrance. From the rugged desert, coastal, and forested landscapes to picturesque valleys, towering mountain ranges, pristine bodies of water, and great canyons, it is undeniable that backpacking in any of the U.S.'s many protected wilderness areas is honestly a pleasure trip.
Still, with ample ground to cover and countless otherworldly wonders to discover across the nation, choosing one outdoorsy haven over another can be difficult. What's more, deciding where to start your alfresco adventure if you have never gone backpacking before can be a bit tricky. So, to make planning your next multi-day excursion into the wild a little easier, here are 12 of the best U.S. national park sites to consider for your next backpacking getaway.
Backpacking Tips
If this is your first time considering such an adventure , then there are a handful of important tidbits to keep in mind. For instance, nature explorers should choose a particular destination or, in this case, a national park that is both convenient and in line with everyone's experience level in the group. It is also important to remember that backpacking in most national parks does require a permit — more specifically, a backcountry permit and sometimes even a hiking permit, along with car reservations (if applicable).
Some national parks offer last-minute or day-hike permits if you decide on an impromptu backpacking adventure. But, it is highly recommended that you plan out all aspects of your outdoorsy getaway well in advance, as permits generally tend to go quickly, especially during peak season. Besides all this, backpackers need to take into account the weather, have a well-thought-out itinerary, make it a point to thoroughly understand the park rules, have gear/equipment that works, and pack the essentials (food, water, a first-aid kit, and layer-friendly clothing — just to name a few).
Mount Rainier National Park
Wanderers will find Mount Rainier National Park in the gorgeous state of Washington. Touted as next-level, this popular outdoor space is teeming with stunning scenery, iconic hiking trails, ample activities, a volcano to explore (Mount Rainier), and a wealth of backpacker-friendly accommodations. As a whole, Mount Rainier National Park is an excellent choice for all experience levels, though it is not a walk in the park by any means. That said, trails such as the Wonderland Trail, a 93-mile excursion, are moderate to challenging but not impossible to complete.
Of course, besides trails, parkgoers can enjoy one-of-a-kind views of wildlife, forested land, flower-filled meadows, valleys, glaciers, waterfalls, Mount Rainier itself, and the surrounding picturesque mountainscape . Of course, Wonderland Trail hikers will need to spend a few days in the park and, therefore, must obtain a wilderness pass for a multi-day stay in the backcountry (note that all overnight stays need a permit and are available on a first-come-first-served basis up to two days in advance). And if you plan on climbing above 10,000 feet while immersing yourself in this vast 236,380-acre park, then a climbing pass is also required. However, it is worth mentioning that day hikes in Mount Rainier National Park do not warrant a permit.
Grand Canyon National Park
From whitewater rafting and horseback riding to hiking, the Grand Canyon National Park , in Arizona, is legendary and truly a sight to behold. Not only is the Grand Canyon a World Heritage Site, but it is also a place like no other on Earth, with the canyon itself dating back over two billion years. So backpackers are in for a real treat here. This national park is approximately 1.2 million acres, and there are more than a few backpacking adventures to take, like Havasupai Waterfalls (a 4-day, 27-mile, moderate trail) and the iconic Rim-to-Rim route (a 4-day, 24-mile, moderate trek) — just to name a few.
Plus, with a plethora of camping options, DIY adventure planning assistance, guided activities, and incredible views, the Grand Canyon National Park is undoubtedly a must. And speaking of camping, a backcountry permit is not required if you opt to set up camp in the developed North Rim or South Rim campgrounds (Desert View or Mather campground). Backpackers also don't need to apply for a single day or night hike pass here either. However, if your plans do include accommodations and multi-day excursions, then make sure you apply for a backcountry permit well in advance (typically five months prior to your trip).
Olympic National Park
Only a few hours from Seattle, Washington, adventurers will find Olympic National Park . This national gem is brimming with activities, beautiful beaches like LaPush, Shi Shi, and Ruby Beach, snow-capped mountain peaks, glaciers, Mount Olympus, and over 922,650 acres of outdoorsy goodness. Olympic National Park actually ranks high in the list of the most visited U.S. parks, so there is definitely something to this particular wilderness area.
A few other reasons to check out this phenomenal national park include its diverse wildlife, distinct rainforests (the Queets, Quinault, and Hoh Rainforests), several hundred miles of hiking trails, as well as Olympic National Park's abundance of lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. What's more, backpackers on their own pilgrimage or anyone looking to go off-grid can check out the One Square Inch of Silence. The One Square Inch of Silence is located in Olympic National Park's Hoh Rain Forest and is as majestic as it is fascinating. That said, don't forget to get your wilderness/backcountry permit early (available six months in advance on a rolling basis) for your multi-day outing in this marvel.
Yosemite National Park
First-rate stargazing, hiking, and wildlife-watching are what backpackers can expect when they head to Yosemite National Park . But that's not all that awaits backcountry explorers in this 1,200 square-mile wonderland tucked away in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains. With cascading waterfalls, towering sequoia trees, stellar rock climbing, and 800-plus miles of hiking trails, Yosemite National Park is another top U.S. place of interest. Attracting countless visitors annually, this national treasure is one of America's first conservation efforts and is home to some downright incredible sights.
A few must-see spots in Yosemite National Park include the famous El Capitan, the Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall — all of which can easily be seen from Tunnel View. Popular hiking trails like the Mist Trail, Tuolumne Grove Trail, and Tenaya Lake are also beyond picturesque. Besides these wonders, Yosemite National Park is brimming with adventures, so many in fact that hiking permits for the Half Dome and general backcountry permits can only be obtained via lottery (note — the wilderness permit lottery runs 24 weeks in advance).
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
A trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is definitely in order for nature lovers and outdoorsy folk alike. From gorgeous mountainscape scenery and abundant wildlife to activities galore and no entrance fee, spending some time in this national park, in Tennessee, is well worth it, especially for those looking for their next great backpacking adventure. Not only is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park home to ample hiking routes, including the Appalachian Trail, biking paths, and horseback riding trails but this 522,427-acre park is also filled with history and natural wonders.
Stunning landmarks like Charlie's Bunion, The Alum Cave Bluffs, Arch Rock, Cades Cove, and Sugarland Mountain, for instance, are definitely worth a gander. Likewise, historical sites such as the Walker Sisters Place, Elkmont Ghost Town, the Little Greenbrier School built in 1882, the John Ownby Cabin, and the Little Cataloochee Church established in 1889 are captivating walkthroughs. And the nice thing here is no hiking permits are necessary to traverse this beloved national park. However, backpackers will, of course, need a backcountry permit and advance reservations for camping, and with both filling up fast, it is highly recommended that you book at least 30 days ahead of time.
Zion National Park
Zion National Park is known for its vast hiking opportunities (over 90 miles of trails), including Angels Landing, The Subway, and the not-so-easy-to-complete Narrows. Along the way, backpackers in Zion National Park get a front-row seat to some pretty incredible sandstone rock formations, mountain vistas, picture-perfect desert lands, fantastic canyons, and stellar night skies. So it is not too surprising that Utah's Zion National Park makes the list here.
In addition to all the lovely natural scenery, backpackers can enjoy abundant wildlife, biking trails, guided tours, ample camping sites, and over 12,400 acres of pristine wilderness. Plus, with diverse recreational activities, at practically every turn, Zion National Park is a great option for the adventurous explorer. And, much like many of the other phenomenal national parks mentioned, Zion National Park requires wilderness or backcountry permits for overnight camping. Though, hiking permits are only a must for the challenging hikes, including Angels Landing, and more often than not for The Narrows and The Subway. That said, camping reservations can be made up to 14 days in advance, whereas backcountry permits here involve ample prep — so make sure to plan accordingly.
Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park is just one more amazing U.S. wilderness conservation area that should be on everyone's must-see list. With geysers like Old Faithful and the Norris Geyser Basin, Mammoth Hot Springs, the Mud Volcano boardwalk, vibrant natural wonders including the Midway Geyser Basin, a vast array of backcountry terrain, and so much more, a backpacking adventure here is practically a requirement. Besides over 3,470 square miles of world-class wilderness that stretches across three states (Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho), Yellowstone National Park is also teeming with wildlife, and backpackers can expect to encounter a few bison herds, elks, wolves, and bears while out and about.
In the way of recreational fun, Yellowstone National Park has over 900 miles of trails to explore, its very own Grand Canyon, terrific fishing, horseback riding, and several campgrounds conveniently located in some of the most scenic parts of this national park. Surprisingly, no hiking passes are required for Yellowstone National Park. But, as expected, your backcountry permits are necessary and can be requested early via lottery access or two days in advance in person (on a first-come, first-served basis) during peak season, which runs from May 15th to October 31st — reservation rules for non-peak season camping permits vary.
Big Bend National Park
Exploring Big Bend National Park is simply a life-changing experience. Here, backpackers can enjoy over 1,250 square miles of open Texas wilderness, breathtaking landscapes, hundreds of miles of hiking trails, and even a hidden ghost town. A truly vast dersetland, this national park is estimated to be larger than the entire state of Rhode Island — providing backpackers with more than a few opportunities to venture out.
Yet, another great reason to go backpacking in Big Bend National Park is for the nighttime views. Not only does Big Bend National Park boasts some of the best light-pollution-free views of the night sky in all of the U.S., but this awe-inspiring wilderness area also has several stargazing activities, tours, and photography workshops available. Moreover, on your multi-day adventure, there is no limit to what you can do in the daytime. Everything from canoeing the Rio Grande, fishing, and marveling at all the wildlife to perusing historical sites, participating in park-sponsored events, and even catching a festival are all options here. Of course, a backcountry permit is required here for all overnight adventuring and can be obtained up to 180 days in advance.
Denali National Park And Preserve
Located in Alaska, the Denali National Park and Preserve also belongs on the list of the best U.S. wilderness areas for backpacking. Over six million acres in size, Denali National Park is overflowing with untouched forested land, wildlife, backcountry hiking, and incredible scenic beauty. In fact, this is the perfect national park for experienced backpackers looking to really go off-grid.
What's more, thrill-seekers who dream of checking out the tallest peak in North America can do so in Denali National Park . Mount Denali, or Mount McKinley, reaches a staggering 20,310 feet above sea level and is quite a feat to complete. However, with serious terrain and extreme weather, Mount Denali is considered one of the hardest hikes/climbs spanning anywhere from 12 to 18 days. Thus, backcountry permits can be booked from October to April via email up to two weeks before your trip. From May to September, wilderness passes for camping can be obtained one day prior, in-person. So, whether mountaineering is your goal or you are perfectly content with marveling at this natural wonder from a distance while backpacking, Denali National Park is definitely worth experiencing at least once in your lifetime.
Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park is situated in Northern Montana next to the Canadian Border and is roughly a million acres in size. With the northern Rocky Mountains, spectacular glacier-made peaks and valleys, shimmering lakes and streams, thriving flora and fauna, plus lush ancient forests, Glacier National Park truly lives up to its beloved nickname — the Crown of the Continent. Backpackers headed to Glacier National Park will find 700-plus miles of hiking trails, great fishing spots, multi-use trails (for biking and horseback riding), and ample opportunities for outdoorsy fun, including whitewater rafting.
Of course, with so much to see and do in Glacier National Park, backcountry camping makes sense here. And as of 2023, securing a wilderness permit for this national park in advance has never been easier. Backpackers can simply apply online via the NPS Recreation.gov site or obtain a walk-in backcountry pass (available on a first-come, first-served basis) the day before your great adventure or same-day.
Grand Teton National Park
If backpacking in national parks is all about the magnificent scenery for you, then Grand Teton National Park in Northwestern Wyoming will not disappoint. Known for its illustrious mountainscape and captivating terrain, Grand Teton National Park is as beautiful as it is abundant. Though on the smaller side, at only 310,000 acres, Grand Teton National Park definitely makes up for what it lacks in acreage with adventure. With action-packed bodies of water like Jenny Lake, Snake River, and Jackson Lake, backpackers might be tempted to give their boots a rest and enjoy some time on the water.
Undoubtedly, Grand Teton National Park is also no slouch when it comes to camping, rock climbing, and hiking either. And since Grand Teton National Park is teeming with wildlife, wildflowers, forested land, all kinds of accommodations, and some of the oldest rocks in North America, backpackers will have a blast regardless of their preferred recreation. Plus, unlike many other national parks, no permits are necessary for hiking or climbing. However, Wilderness or backcountry permits are a must for all overnight escapades and are only available during the summer. So, it is highly recommended that you book early (reservations for the summer season can be made the first week of January through May 15th).
Rocky Mountain National Park
Last but not least, Colorado's famous Rocky Mountain National Park is yet another premier wilderness area for backpacking and a host of other fantastic experiences. Open all year round, the Rocky Mountain National Park is a little over 264,800 acres in size. With roughly 355 miles of hiking trails to explore, three separate ecosystems, thriving mountain meadows, an in-park museum, a serious butterfly population, the Rocky Mountains, and so much more, this park is absolutely a treasure trove of excitement.
Still, a multi-day venture here means backpackers must secure a summer season backcountry permit, which can be obtained up to six months before your national park outing online via Recreation.gov. For the winter season, Moraine Park Campground is the only camping site available, and it is first-come, first-served. That said, whether it's the Rocky Mountain National Park or any other highly-rated national park on this list that catches your fancy, your next backpacking adventure is bound to be nothing short of epic — especially with the proper planning and preparation.
