Journey 2: The Mysterious Island: Film Review

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Still - H 2012

A menagerie of outsized fauna is royally upstaged by Dwayne Johnson ’s dancing man-boobs in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , yet another from the Verne-adaptation school of fanciful family adventure.

A 3D update of one of the less widely read Jules Verne classics, it follows the 2008 hit J ourney to the Center of the Earth , a pioneer in the 3D resurrection that reached its zenith a year later with Avatar.

The Bottom Line Jules Verne rejuvenated for the iPhone age.

Verne was a fantasist nonpareil, but his 19th century imagination would surely have balked at the notion of berries pinging wildly off The Rock’s pecs as they do in this kid-friendly excursion from Canadian director Brad Peyton ( Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore ).

The targeted demographic, however, will gladly hop aboard for a cornball ride through colorful, often glaringly phony sets popping with miniature elephants, gold-spewing volcanoes and a monster-truck-sized lizard.

For the adults, there’s the edifying sight of Michael Caine astride a giant bee.

The New Line and Contrafilm presentation, bowing in Australia January 19 before a global roll-out that reaches North America on February 10, can expect to at least equal the $250 million box office drawn by 2008’s Journey.

In Journey, he was accompanied by his uncle (played by Brendan Fraser ), but this time round a cheerily self-aware Johnson, as his Navy vet stepfather Hank, is the responsible adult on board.

Sean is now a rebellious 17-year-old and skeptical of the new father-figure chosen by his mom ( Kristen Davis ). The requisite male bonding ensues when Sean intercepts a coded distress signal which leads the pair to an uncharted island in the middle of the South Pacific and into the eccentric vortex of Sean’s adventurer grandfather, Alexander (Caine).

Equal and opposite attraction emerges in the form of the headstrong Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), daughter of helicopter pilot Gabato ( Luis Guzmán , providing stale comic relief).

The island is a rainbow-filled world where evolutionary anomalies abound but, as the band of adventurers skips from one supersized Survivor -like challenge to the next, one can’t help feeling the creative potential of Verne’s vision is wasted.

There’s certainly nothing much here to frighten the children, although Johnson’s ukulele-accompanied rendition of “What a Wonderful World” might come close. The dense scientific discussion that characterized Verne’s “The Mysterious Island” is boiled down to an occasional spurt of exposition – and an iPhone cameo – as screenwriters Richard Outten, Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn braid together elements from that novel, together with Robert Louis Stevenson ’s Robinson Crusoe and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, to produce an episodic storyline.

Like Jane Austen , Verne has provided a rich seam for Hollywood screenwriters to mine long after his death. There have been various cinematic adaptations of his 1874 novel; the most fondly remembered is 1961’s Mysterious Island, celebrated for Ray Harryhausen ’s stop-motion animation and the buckskin micro-dress worn by Beth Rogan . That film followed the 1959 version of J ourney to the Center of the Earth in the same way Journey 2 follows 2008’s Journey , but was considered a sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in that the megalomaniac Captain Nemo also featured.

Nemo is referenced obliquely here, but a glorious steam-punk rendering of the Nautilus is featured prominently, eventually getting a jump-start from a gigantic electric eel in one of the film’s most inventive set pieces.

Where the 1961 film took its make-believe seriously, Peyton is content creating a series of visual spectacles. Johnson sets the tone with an affable goofiness, although never ignites the spark that his labored banter with Caine requires.

By Neil Genzlinger

  • Feb. 9, 2012

Like cars that are involved in crashes, islands explode far more often in the movies than they do in real life. Another one goes kablooey in “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” a sequel to the 2008 film “Journey to the Center of the Earth” that again gives a Jules Verne tale 3-D treatment.

Sean (Josh Hutcherson), the only major returnee from the earlier movie , receives a radio transmission that leads him to believe that his grandfather is on a fantastical island in the middle of nowhere, and he and his stepfather (Dwayne Johnson) go looking for it.

The usual escape-before-the-big-blast stuff ensues, augmented by some fairly tedious family dynamics. But this kind of movie is all about the special effects. They start out great — cool helicopter crash, very convincing giant lizard — but grow more amateurish as the film goes along, with a flight sequence on giant bees proving particularly clunky.

Michael Caine plays the grandfather, and the efforts at repartee between his character and Mr. Johnson’s occasionally amuse. Vanessa Hudgens from the “High School Musical” movies is on hand too, though it’s Mr. Johnson who gets to sing. Besides that musical moment, the movie makes no effort to do anything other than what is expected, and it succeeds at that.

“Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” is rated PG (Parental guidance suggested). Angry animals and an angrier landscape.

Opens on Friday nationwide. Directed by Brad Peyton 1 hour 34 minutes.

Now streaming on:

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" looks like nothing so much as one of those live-action adventures that Disney used to grind out in the 1950s — and hey, here's Captain Nemo's Nautilus to prove it. Also, a tree house to humble "Swiss Family Robinson," which contains a short-wave radio that has been assembled from old spoons, I think I heard.

The movie is very, very loosely a sequel to " Journey to the Center of the Earth ," with only two connections: It's inspired by a Jules Verne novel, and it co-stars young Josh Hutcherson as the hero Sean. The film opens with him on a motorcycle and being chased by cops, but not to worry; all he did was break into a satellite-tracking station to boost the power on a message for help sent by his grandfather from a lost island in the Pacific.

Sean, whose father in the first film ( Brendan Fraser ) has disappeared (from the cast, anyway), now has to deal with Hank ( Dwayne Johnson , aka the Rock). Hank is his new stepdad. Josh and Hank make friends by decrypting grandfather's message; Hank glances at it and intuits that the two-syllable words stand for dots and one-syllable words stand for dashes, which means Grandpa has had enough free time on his remote island to figure out a way to make Morse code several times longer than it previously was. Unanswered is why grandfather would encrypt a call for help.

This Hank, what a swell guy. He proposes that the two of them fly off to the Pacific and find Grandpa. On arrival somewhere, they hire a tourist helicopter pilot named Gabato, played by Luis Guzman as another one of those low-comedy guys who gets all worked up and is scared of stuff. (I enjoyed a reprise of this classic shot: Gabato runs toward camera, falls on stomach, looks up …and up … and up.)

Gabato has a daughter named Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), a Polynesian beauty who wears a tank top and Daisy Dukes throughout the film. These four fly off in the helicopter, are trapped in a Force Five hurricane that rips it to pieces and are lucky enough to find themselves alive on the beach of the Mysterious Island.

This is your complete island. It has an active volcano; waterfalls with no apparent water sources streaming down cliffs; elephants the size of dogs, and giant lizards that are nowhere big enough to account for the size of their eggs. (Josh falls through the shell of one, splashes in a pool of yolk and is attacked by an unborn lizard chick.) Also on the island is the lost city of Atlantis, even though it's in the wrong ocean, and bees so big Sean and Kailani can both ride on the back of one. And Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather, played by Michael Caine , who will not be editing this role into his videos about how to act in movies.

I hope you understand I enjoyed most of this stuff. The director, Brad Peyton , apparently intended it as a genial parody of countless other movies in this spirit. There is, for example, a scene were Sean, Grandpa, Kailani and Gabato all sit around the old campfire and listen while Hank strums a ukulele and sings "What a Wonderful World." And I mean he sings it: every word of three verses. It's not every day you see the Rock channeling Gene Autry.

Sean deduces that Verne's novel contains everything they need to know, and this comes in handy when the volcano explodes, and the island begins to sink into the sea. Sure enough, Captain Nemo's submarine is still hidden underwater. Hank and Sean, trusting Verne, dive off a high cliff, and while holding their breath and swimming underwater, are able to (1) find the sub, (2) open the hatch by tugging and twisting it, (3) swim inside, (4) push a lever to fill it with air, and (5) get the power generator working by jump-starting it with an electric eel.

This is transcendently goofy. It isn't a "good" movie in the usual sense (or most senses), but it is jolly and good-natured, and Michael Caine and Dwayne Johnson are among the most likable of actors. Johnson is such a good sport, he even shows young Sean how to impress girls by flexing your pecs so quickly that nuts will ricochet off them. I can't think of any reason to pay extra for the 3-D.

Where Was Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Filmed?

of Where Was Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Filmed?

Brad Peyton helmed the blockbuster adventure movie ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,’ the second installment in the Jules Verne-inspired ‘Journey’ series. Upon discovering a signal from Sean’s grandfather Alexander Anderson, Sean and his stepdad, Hank, set out for a sprawling adventure filled with lush greenery and uncanny creatures. They arrive in the far-flung island country of Palau, regroup with Alexander thanks to a cyclone, and embark on a search for the lost city of Atlantis.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson delivers a hilarious performance alongside Michael Caine , Luis Guzmán, Vanessa Hudgens , and Josh Hutcherson. Most of the story unveils in the turbulent pacific, while the finale takes place on a dreamy island. However, you may seek to identify the locations where the movie was filmed. If that is the case, let us divulge before you everything we know.

Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Filming Locations

‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ was filmed in locations in and around the U.S., especially in Hawaii. Filming commenced on October 25, 2010, and was wrapped up by December 15 of the same year. Let us now take you to the specific locations where the movie was filmed!

O’ahu, Hawaii

Most parts of the movie were filmed in Hawaii, possibly including the Atlantis scenes. The director took his team to Kualoa Ranch, a 4,000-acre vast nature reserve, event venue, cattle ranch, and most importantly, a famous filming destination in Hawaii. Situated at 49560 Kamehameha Highway in the community of Ka’a’awa, at around 24 miles from Honolulu, the ranch is a popular tourist destination in the city.

dwayne johnson journey films

The reserve has been home to more than 79 movie productions, including blockbusters such as ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘ 50 First Dates ,’ and ‘Pearl Harbor.’ Look for the scene where they are heading towards the submarine, at around 46 minutes mark. You can locate the open space where filming of ‘ Jurassic Park ‘ took place.

dwayne johnson journey films

Several scenes were also filmed at the Waimea Bay and its adjacent Waimea Bay Beach Park, located at 61-31 Kamehameha Highway in the community of Haleiwa along the north shore of O’ahu. Due to its situation at the mouth of the Waimea River and the proximity of several tourist places, Waimea Bay sees footfall all around the year. In the summer, you can go out surfing, while in the winter, you can enjoy the view of the towering waves with a bonfire.

Wilmington, North Carolina

The production team carried out several scenes in a controlled studio environment. The movie presumably contains several CGI-aided sequences, and the scenes were possibly developed in a full-service production facility in the community of Wilmington off the coast of North Carolina. EUE / Screen Gems Studios, a movie production facility located at 1223 North 23rd Street, lent its premises to film scenes.

dwayne johnson journey films

The 50-acre expansive studio facility features ten fully equipped soundstages and a back-lot to tackle any global-scale production. Since its inception in 1985, more than 400 titles have come out of the studio. Movies filmed in the studio include blockbusters such as ‘ The Conjuring ‘ and ‘Iron Man 3.’ ‘Iron Man 3’ was one of the most significant projects the studio had ever seen, with filming taking place in all the ten soundstages simultaneously.

New York City, New York

dwayne johnson journey films

Lastly, a few scenes at the movie’s beginning were filmed on location in New York City. New York City remains one of the most iconic places to shoot a film due to the city’s cultural significance. From Martin Scorsese’s ‘ Taxi Driver ‘ to Woody Allen ‘s ‘ Manhattan ,’ the towering landscape of New York City has been featured in timeless classics.

Every Dwayne Johnson movie, ranked

dwayne johnson journey films

The rundown of the Rock's movies

In 2018, yours truly took on the seemingly impossible mission of proving that Dwayne Johnson has been playing the same character throughout his entire career, which has actually just been the epic story of one legendary man. Well, now comes a slightly easier task—ranking every film starring the artist formerly known as the Rock. Get smart and read on for our full rundown.

37. Empire State (2013)

If you have the Rock and Liam Hemsworth in your movie, and it still goes straight to DVD, then it must be dumpster fire bad.

36. Doom (2005)

The best thing about Doom actually happened 13 years after its release, when Johnson celebrated his perceived success of Rampage by tweeting , "It seems we may have finally broken the dreaded video game curse. And remember, I starred in the stinker 'Doom' so I have lived thy curse." The Doom Twitter account then responded with just, "Dwayne." Sorry, Doom , but Dwayne wasn't lying.

35. The Scorpion King (2002)

Universal was so impressed with Johnson's big screen debut in The Mummy Returns that they greenlit this prequel before filming on the former had even completed. Unfortunately, Johnson's first lead role was a step down for the franchise, lacking the fun that director Stephen Sommers and Mummy star Brendan Fraser had tapped into with the original adventure-fantasy films.

34. Tooth Fairy (2010)

It's always a great sign when you have five screenwriters—and one of them came up with the line, "You can't handle the tooth." But, thankfully, Tooth Fairy made Johnson realize the truth is that he needed to leave behind his run of family films and become the action star that he always was destined to be.

33. Planet 51 (2009)

While this animated film gets credit for flipping the usual alien-human dynamic and having Johnson's astronaut be the incoming "invader," the execution doesn't do enough with the premise. But respect to Johnson for providing a few of Planet 51 's more amusing moments.

32. Be Cool (2005)

In the opening scene of the Get Shorty sequel, producer Chili Palmer ( John Travolta ) complains about sequels, but the attempt at being meta, instead, inadvertently serves as a cruel joke about the disappointing movie to come. Be Cool manages to squander a star-studded cast of Travolta, Johnson, Uma Thurman , Harvey Keitel , Cedric the Entertainer , Andre Benjamin , and Vince Vaughn . And yet—still early in his acting career—Johnson is the comedic standout as a gay bodyguard/aspiring actor who does a killer Bring It On monologue.

31. G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

The follow-up to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra marked the end of a three-year stretch where Johnson starred in three sequels in which he wasn't in the original films. After this forgettable and unnecessary sequel/reboot, he finally opted to start his own potential franchises, while still smartly staying aboard the Fast train.

30. Baywatch (2017)

Hot take: Baywatch isn't the disaster that it's been made out to be. Now, is it a good movie? No, but it does provide enough laughs along the way. That being said, not sure I can go as far as Johnson did and declare that fans loved it . That seems a bit overboard.

29. Southland Tales (2007)

Upon its infamous premiere at Cannes Film Festival, writer-director Richard Kelly 's film was greeted with boos and audience members walking out. And it's understandable, considering, by the end, I was left wondering WTF I just watched. The same could be said for stars Johnson and Justin Timberlake , who have admitted they often didn't know what was going on, which seems less than ideal for the film's narrator. Still, I moved Southland up a few spots solely for ambition.

28. Faster (2010)

Johnson's attempt at making a film noir doesn't live up to its ambitions, but Faster does successfully steer his career in the right direction, with Johnson becoming an action leading man for the first time in six years—and also preparing him to become a Fast star.

27. Race to Witch Mountain (2009)

I'm gonna say it: I don't buy the Rock as a taxi driver. Now, what I do buy is his chemistry with Carla Gugino , which he wisely also tapped into in both the previously mentioned Faster and 2015's San Andreas . While Johnson's relationship with the alien kids he's protecting isn't as indelible, their goodbye at the end of the film packs some real emotion.

26. Hercules (2014)

Another hot take: Hercules isn't as bad as expected. Because, if I'm being honest, I wanted no part of this movie and wasn't sure why Johnson would either, considering he basically already did something in this vein with Scorpion King . But the solid action, lighter tone, and Johnson's gravitas make this as good as a Brett Ratner Hercules film could be.

25. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)

Having not seen the original, this is my first journey into the Journey franchise, and the experience was...fine. The movie is pleasant enough and an easy watch, even if Johnson must have thought it was better than that as he's made Journey 2 filmmaker Brad Peyton his go-to director ( San Andreas and Rampage ).

24. Walking Tall (2004)

There's not much substance here and the supporting cast hams it up, but Johnson puts Walking Tall on his broad shoulders, handling the leading man title just as well as his character handles a 2x4 .

23. The Game Plan (2007)

Once I got past the ridiculousness of Johnson playing a quarterback (you don't go from defensive lineman at University of Miami to being an alternate reality's Tom Brady ), The Game Plan was a charming family comedy. For once, Johnson gets to be an arrogant jerk and he plays it well, especially opposite the adorable Madison Pettis. This also scores points for being the only film to feature an extensive Rock ballet scene.

22. Red Notice (2021)

Netflix 's biggest movie to date brought together three of Hollywood's biggest stars (and Fast & Furious alums) in Johnson, Ryan Reynolds , and Gal Gadot . Reuniting with frequent collaborator Rawson Marshall Thurber ( Skyscraper , Central Intelligence ), Johnson plays FBI profiler John Hartley, who teams up with Reynolds' wisecracking criminal to catch Gadot's master art thief. At times, Red Notice is harmless, disposable fun, but the constant ribbing back and forth between Johnson and Reynolds becomes tiring, especially considering they did the same exhausting bit in 2019's Hobbs & Shaw . The headline for EW critic Leah Greenblatt's review says it best: "A starry action comedy too slapstick-silly to take seriously." But shout-out to the Vin Diesel- Cats joke. The beef lives on!

21. Skyscraper (2018)

Johnson tries to fire up his own Die Hard with this film that seemed crafted specifically to be a huge hit in China (where Skyscraper is set). The latter came true, the former not so much. The suspense is there and Johnson does his job more than adequately, but he lacks an interesting foe like Bruce Willis had in Alan Rickman —no offense to the skyscraper.

20. Get Smart (2008)

While the film adaptation of the 1960s TV series fails to live up to its potential, Johnson, Steve Carell , and Anne Hathaway are game enough to make for an entertaining watch.

19. Rampage (2018)

I can't go as far as Johnson did and proclaim that Rampage broke the "dreaded video game curse," but I will say that it's much better than Doom (precisely 16 spots better). And while Johnson is usually the main attraction, the real draws here are the 30-foot-tall gorilla George and Jeffrey Dean Morgan chewing scenery and oozing swagger.

18. The Mummy Returns (2002)

This may be Johnson's film debut and his character's presence hangs over the Mummy sequel, but he's not really onscreen much, which is fine since Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz continue to be a winning combination—even if Returns fell short of its predecessor. Yet, it's still much better than Tom Cruise 's 2017 film, and that's why my motto is #BrendanFraserIsMyMummy.

17. Gridiron Gang (2006)

Despite being a die-hard sports fan, I don't usually enjoy sports movies because they're basically all the same story and often tend to be one big cliché. While Gridiron Gang isn't exempt from that, the detention center setting and a grounded performance from Johnson make it better than a lot of its contemporaries.

16. Snitch (2013)

Sometimes, I just want Everyman Dwayne Johnson. And that's what we get in Snitch , where he's not a CIA agent or a god or the Tooth Fairy, he's just a dad willing to do whatever it takes to help his son. And Johnson plays the role well, alongside a strong supporting cast of Jon Bernthal , Susan Sarandon , Michael Kenneth Williams , and Benjamin Bratt .

15. Jungle Cruise (2021)

In addition to how hilarious this tiny captain's hat looks on this mammoth of a man's head, there's a lot to appreciate in Jungle Cruise , from the mere presence of the lovable Emily Blunt to Jesse Plemons twirling his mustache in epic fashion. Although, at the end of the day, Disney 's attempt at making a Disneyfied version of The Mummy mostly just had me remembering how good The Mummy is. #BrendanFraserIsMyMummy

14. Pain & Gain (2013)

Johnson, Mark Wahlberg , Anthony Mackie , Ken Jeong , Rebel Wilson , Rob Corddry , and Tony Shalhoub are all dialed up to 100 in Michael Bay 's dark comedy-crime film. And it's their performances and chemistry that mostly pump Pain & Gain above the over-the-top violence and controversy regarding the treatment of this true story.

13. Central Intelligence (2016)

On the page, Central Intelligence isn't anything special, but the very game Johnson and Hart combo elevate the material (cameos from Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy also help). Opposite comedy superstar Hart, Johnson manages to score the most laughs as a fanny pack-wearing, unicorn-loving spy.

12. San Andreas (2015)

The Johnson and Gugino magic continues! And for San Andreas , I'm going to cede the floor to EW's Chris Nashawaty, who perfectly summed up the film in his review : "As patently preposterous, scientifically dubious, and unapologetically corny as director Brad Peyton's orgy of CGI devastation is, its popcorn prophecy of the inevitable is a blast of giddy, disposable fun. It's a ridiculously satisfying slice of summer disaster porn." Preach, Chris!

11. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

No one was asking for a new Jumanji , with all of us perfectly satisfied with the Robin Williams -led original. But, that's what made Welcome to the Jungle such a pleasant surprise, thanks to a fun plot twist and the charming cast.

10. Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

The Rock's second Jumanji installment barely edges out Welcome to the Jungle. While Next Level may not necessarily be a better movie, it's definitely funnier, thanks to the additions of Danny DeVito , Danny Glover , and Awkwafina , as well as a few amusing twists involving who is in what avatars.

9. Fighting With My Family (2019)

Johnson executive produces and plays a supporting role as himself in fellow Tooth Fairy alum Stephen Merchant 's delightful wrestling film, which is based on the life and rise of WWE superstar Paige. Vince Vaughn and Johnson are the big names in the cast, but it's leading lady Florence Pugh who proves to be a star in her own right. Plus, Fighting gets bonus points for a Vin Diesel joke directed at Johnson.

8. The Fate of the Furious (2017)

Get ready for a big run of Fast & Furious movies! The Fate of the Furious has a lot to like: the evolving relationship between Johnson and Jason Statham (leading to their spin-off ), Statham's baby fight , and Queen Helen Mirren . And, despite all of that, F. Gary Gray 's film suffers from the absence of Paul Walker —who died during the production of Furious 7 —and losing the Hobbs and Toretto dynamic that had become a crucial part of the franchise, a result of the drama between Johnson and Vin Diesel .

7. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)

Since Johnson joined the Fast & Furious franchise, a spin-off seemed inevitable, and it finally became a reality with Hobbs & Shaw , a fun, ridiculous action movie that doesn't quite feel like a true Fast movie—except for featuring two characters who joined later in the franchise and having " Fast & Furious Presents " thrown in front of the title. But Johnson and Statham's chemistry, Idris Elba chewing scenery in the best way, Vanessa Kirby kicking ass, and some unexpected cameos make for a very enjoyable ride.

6. Fast & Furious 6 (2013)

Following the success of Fast Five , Johnson basically gets upped to a colead along with Diesel and Walker for the sixth installment. But Fast 6 's most notable cast news is the return of original star Michelle Rodriguez and the departure of future Wonder Woman Gal Gadot. And while director Justin Lin continues to raise the bar for action set pieces (such as with the longest runway in film history), Fast 6 only suffers from being situated between the franchise's two best films.

5. The Rundown (2003)

In his first non- Mummy -related role, the action movie star belt is metaphorically passed to Johnson by Arnold Schwarzenegger via a cameo in the opening scene of Peter Berg 's underrated gem. The jungle setting and terrific chemistry between Johnson and Seann William Scott —who would later costar together in Southland Tales and Planet 51— make this a high point for all involved and leave us waiting for that long-rumored sequel .

4. The Other Guys (2010)

Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson steal the first 10 minutes of Adam McKay 's buddy cop action-comedy, only to then shockingly jump to their deaths. And, despite their loss, the film continues to amuse through the chemistry of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, the hilarious use of Eva Mendes , and Michael Keaton 's love of TLC.

3. Furious 7 (2015)

Best remembered for the emotional goodbye to Walker and his character Brian O'Conner, Furious 7 is much more than that. Stepping in for Fast 3 , 4 , 5 , and 6 director Justin Lin, James Wan takes the action to new heights, literally (flying cars and jumping cars from skyscraper to skyscraper). And the addition of Jason Statham gives the franchise a bonafide, big-named bad guy that it had yet to have. But, as previously mentioned, the highlight is Walker's send-off, perfectly paired with Wiz Khalifa 's "See You Again," and making this writer cry every time he watches (which is a lot of times).

2. Moana (2016)

Johnson would like me to know that this isn't the biggest non- Fast hit of his career (that goes to Jumanji ), but we'll agree that it's the biggest pop culture phenomenon. The trio of Johnson, Auliʻi Cravalho , and Lin-Manuel Miranda were music to audience's ears and helped turn Moana into an animated classic. Dwayne, you're welcome.

1. Fast Five (2011)

It took a very fast five seconds for me to decide what No. 1 would be. Confession: I've seen Fast Five approximately 100 times. And that's for good reason, considering it's the greatest action movie of all time (yeah, I said it). The fifth Fast & Furious film was a game-changer for the franchise, shifting away from street racing, uniting the previous casts, and bringing in new blood with Johnson's Luke Hobbs, who gets an epic introduction. And the last third is must-watch with a Johnson and Diesel showdown, a safe destroying the streets of Rio de Janiero, and the "Danza Kuduro" tuned closing montage.

10 Best Movies Based On Jules Verne Books, Ranked

  • Jules Verne's work has inspired numerous movie adaptations and is the foundation for some of the earliest science fiction films.
  • Some Jules Verne adaptations are entertaining and enjoyable, while others are outdated and not required viewing.
  • The film "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (2008) successfully updates Verne's classic story with modern special effects and remains fun to watch.

Jules Verne is undoubtedly one of the most prominent authors in science fiction , and its no wonder that his works have inspired countless movie adaptations. One of the most translated writers in human history, the French author has written legendary tales like 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Around the World in 80 Days . Verne's daring imagination put him far ahead of his time, and it's no surprise that movie studios have sought to replicate his sense of wonder with multiple live-action adaptations of Jules Verne stories .

Jules Verne's work has become the foundation for some of the earliest films in the science fiction genre , some of which even hold up today remarkably well as enjoyable, adventurous romps through the imagination. The mid-to-late 2000s saw a resurgence of Jules Verne films as well, to varying degrees of success, with studios hoping to recapture the joy and nostalgia of the earliest films to adapt Verne's books for a new generation. With so many familiar titles, it's a difficult task to distinguish the very best depictions of Jules Verne's novels over the years.

Journey To The Center Of The Earth

An easily-overlooked made-for-TV movie, the two-part Journey to the Center of the Earth special was a solid attempt at getting to the center of what made Verne's original story so memorable. The film is decidedly slow-moving and low-budgeted, with some creature effects occasionally bordering the precipice of acceptable for a shoestring budget, but the C-List actors can often bring in decent performances amid the campy set-dressing. Despite it's many flaws, the two-part film is an entertaining, knowingly campy jog through Verne's beloved tale of subterranean exploration.

Master Of The World

Master of the World is the sole film to adapt Jules Verne's novel of the same name, and when compared to his other, more well-known stories, it's easy to see why. The narrative of a rich maniac dedicated to the idea of threatening the world's governments into laying down their arms isn't quite as whimsical as Verne's other premises. As for the film, despite rich talent from the likes of a young Charles Bronson and the legendary Vincent Price , the special effects are especially outdated, even for the time period . Master of the World is fun, but not required viewing.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Journey 2: the mysterious island.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the follow-up to 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth. The film takes place four years after the original, showing Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson teaming up with Hank, his stepfather, to find his lost grandfather. Due to scheduling issues, Brendan Fraser wasn't able to return as Trevor Anderson but was replaced by Dwayne Johnson as the film's lead.

Release Date 2012-02-12

Director Brad Peyton

Cast Josh Hutcherson, Michael Caine, Vanessa Hudgens, Dwayne Johnson

This semi-adaptation picks up where 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth left off, replacing Brendan Fraser with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. As the passable action adventure delves into the incredible isle, the tone rides a strange line, at once too scary for younger viewers and too subdued for older ones. Amid mediocre CGI and all-too subdued performances, the best thing that can be said about Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was how it pioneered the art of throwing Johnson into a jungle, later done better in films like Jungle Cruise and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle .

Around The World In 80 Days

Though the idea of circumnavigating the globe in the span of 80 days is now a triviality, in Verne's time, such a time was the stuff of science fiction. The 1956 take on the story is an incredibly grand adventure comedy with a runtime that feels nearly as long as the titular journey itself. The international cast is crammed with stars of Hollywood's Golden Age , who had enough charisma between them to earn the film an early Academy Award for Best Picture. Today, the spectacle and aged humor can be best appreciated as a museum of 50s stardom.

Starring a young Josh Hutcherson and Brendan Fraser, still hot off the success of The Mummy trilogy , 2008's Journey To The Center Of The Earth had all the makings of an action-adventure hit. Being the first to truly update one of Verne's classic stories with modern special effects, the film still looks great 15 years later, even if it is marred by several obvious moments clearly meant to be enjoyed in the context of a 3-D theater. Adapting the classic adventure about as well as it could have, Journey To The Center Of The Earth isn't revolutionary, but undeniably fun.

While most adaptations of Verne's work make at least some departures from the source material, 2004's Around The World In 80 Days completely re-imagines the story as a raucous action-comedy. Though critically-panned at the time, the film is endlessly re-watchable today , with eye-popping action choreography courtesy of Jackie Chan's Passepartout and deadpan comedic timing from Steve Coogan's Phineas Fogg. If the anachronisms and deviations from Verne's novel can be forgiven, Around The World In 80 Days is a creative globe-trotting adventure that doesn't get the respect it deserves.

There's simply no replicating the cheesy fun of the original Journey To The Center Of The Earth , an earnest science fiction adventure movie that wears its heart on its sleeve. The special effects are certainly dated, but it's hard not to wring a certain level of charm out of the delicately hand-painted backgrounds and practical lizardman costumes. Beyond the addition of the deliciously dastardly villain, Count Saknussemm, the film is also one of the most faithful to Verne's work, a commendable effort in and of itself.

The Mysterious Island

The Mysterious Island is one of Jules Verne's lesser-known stories, but the 1961 film of the same name takes every advantage of the novel's conceits. Following a group of Union soldiers in the Civil War who escape prison in a hot air balloon only to wash up on a bizarre uncharted island, the film's sense of tension only ever dials up, as the heroes contend with grimy human pirates and giant fauna rendered by the talent of stop-motion legend Ray Harryhausen . Not the deepest narrative, this thrilling tale of danger holds up decades later remarkably well as a harrowing odyssey.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

One of Disney's earliest forays into live-action storytelling, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea presented the aquatic crew of the Nautilus with untold dangers then-undreamed of by 50s audiences. Beyond the great creature and sci-fi technology designs that still hold up today, the film offers substantially more heart than most other Verne adaptations, taking the time to acclimate the viewer with its intrepid adventurers. It's no wonder that 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was influential enough to earn a spot as a Disneyland mainstay even seven decades after its original release.

A Trip To The Moon

It's only fitting that the world's first science fiction movie sprung from the mind of one of the genre's most influential authors. Presenting early audiences with a dizzying idea of space travel long before the first astronaut was born, A Trip To The Moon 's hypnotic, almost feverish visuals and brisk 14-minute run time assaults the imagination with a yet-unmatched spectacle of dreamlike reality. From the Moon's incredulous face to the dancing insectoid aliens that vanish in a literal puff of smoke, A Trip To The Moon is by far the most influential science fiction film courtesy of Jules Verne.

Dwayne "the rock" johnson's 11 worst movies ranked via rotten tomatoes.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is an A-list movie star. It wasn't always easy though, with these being his worst movies, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Read update

The Rock made a triumphant turn to wrestling, reminding fans of the ups and downs of his movie career to date.

The Rock 's movie career has been going on for twenty years, and has been nothing but a success since his studio debut in The Mummy Returns " way back in 2001. Going from the role of "The Scorpion King" to the highest paid actor in Hollywood was quite a journey for the multi time WWE Champion . Everything he learned in the squared circle was put to great use on the silver screen.

10 Great The Rock Matches That Nobody Talks About

Some of his films have been less successful with the critics (although generally they do make bank, such is his name power). The Rock definitely knows what most people like in terms of entertainment. Choosing projects wisely and maintaining his brand image irrespective of the odd turkey is all part of the Hollywood machine. With that said, here are his top ten rated worst films ever according to the audience of Rotten Tomatoes .

UPDATE: 2024/04/24 20:00 EST BY MICHAEL CHIN

The Rock's epic return run to WWE in 2024 reignited wrestling fans' passion around him. While his rivalry John Cena in the early 2010s had its moments, The Great One took things to the next level when he returned to classic heel form. As The Final Boss, he brought back elements of Hollywood Rock, with an added severity that came from him working with The Bloodline, having real-life corporate power, and his celebrity only having grown since he last entered the ring. So, there's no better time to look back on his movie career, including some of the low lights as he found his footing in Hollywood and some of those earlier movies failed to impress critics or moviegoers.

11 Dwayne Johnson Starred As Hercules In 2014 (48%)

The rock followed in a line of muscle-bound actors playing this part.

  • The Rock had the right look to play Hercules.
  • This film was based on Steven Moore's graphic novel.
  • Though the film drew lukewarm repsonses, Dwayne Johnson was praised for his acting.

The idea of The Rock fronting a movie in the role of mythological hero Hercules isn't such a bad idea. It's a role Arnold Schwarzenegger brought to the big screen early in his own acting career, and has since been a vehicle for a number of bodybuilder and action hero types. The version of Dwayne Johnson that emerged after he largely left wrestling for Hollywood was arguably the most jacked he'd ever been.

10 Most Hideously Muscular Physiques In Wrestling History

Dwayne Johnson's take on the character wasn't bad, with some critics going out of their way to praise his performance within the film. Moreover, the raw material of a Steven Moore graphic novel had potential. Nonetheless, the screenplay wasn't the greatest and though the film was ultimately profitable, it nonetheless goes down as one of Johnson's weaker feature films.

10 GI Joe Retaliation Looked To Build On A New Franchise In 2013 (48%)

The rock was part of a star-studded cast.

  • GI Joe Retaliation built off of the Rise of Cobra film.
  • GI Joe's toy line had been popular for decades.
  • The Rock plays the character of Roadblock.

A new franchise for The Rock after the Steven Sommers original Rise of Cobra added new members. Based on the Hasbro toy line from the 1980s and cartoon series that was wildly popular with posable figures and vehicles, the Joe's were up against Cobra, the worldwide terrorist organization once again.

The Rock plays Roadblock, second in command, and front guy in conjunction with Channing Tatum as Duke to move the series forward, Bruce Willis even joins the fray this time as General Colton.

9 Pain and Gain Cast The Rock As A Bodybuilder In 2013 (47%)

The rock fit right in playing a bodybuilder.

  • Pain and Gain featured Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg.
  • The film was set in the 1980s bodybuilding scene.
  • While not exactly great cinema, the movie is fun.

An enjoyable dramatic comedy directed by Michael Bay starring Mark Wahlberg and The Rock as body builders in 1980s Florida who get involved in hijinks through a kidnapping, and all based on true story. It follows the notorious "Sun Gym Gang" and is definitely played for laughs thankfully.

The Rock plays Paul Doyle who is actually a composite of three different characters from the book, and it is actually one of Michael Bay's films that is easy to follow in terms of direction without major explosions, camera movements or slo-mo lens flair overkill. It is fun viewing in honesty, so do not be put off by the audience rating too much.

8 Race to Witch Mountain Was A Remake In 2009 (44%)

The original film came out in 1975.

  • Race to Witch Mountain was the third film in tis series.
  • The Rock cemented his place as a Disney favorite when he took on this role.
  • Dwayne Johnson plays a cab driver who gets mixed up in a children's adventure.

A remake of the 1975 Disney science fiction adventure feature film involving two children, and third in the series overall. The Rock's partnership with Disney continued after the Game Plan , becoming a firm favorite in the "House of Mouse". It's all initially set around Las Vegas and The Rock plays a cab driver who gets involved with the two kids and is dragged into their fantastical story.

Viewing like a family friendly version of the X-Files, The Rock was still finding his feet in the world of Disney here playing Jack Bruno. Many fans felt it was not up to the level of the original film with much of the mystery and magic missing but The Rock gives it his all anyway.

7 The Rock Appeared In Be Cool In 2005 (42%)

The movie was a sequel to get shorty.

  • Be Cool saw characters set their sights on the music industry.
  • This was one of The Rock's earliest movie roles.
  • Dwayne Johnson was convincing playing a Samoan bodyguard.

This was the sequel to the critically acclaimed Get Shorty with John Travolta as Chilli Palmer, as he now set his sights on conquering the music industry as a result of the Russian mob. This was one of The Rock's early roles just after Walking Tall and he would learn a lot from some seasoned actors ranging from Uma Thurman, Danny DeVito and Harvey Keitel.

The Rock plays Elliot Wilhelm, a Samoan bodyguard and aspiring actor in an obvious in joke. A little bit too much navel gazing and being caught in a self referential loop hinders the rating. The director Gary Gray stated he was hamstrung by the switch from an R to a PG-13 movie.

6 The Tooth Fairy Was A Change Of Pace For Dwayne Johnson In 2010 (41%)

Many fans were surprised when the rock took on this role.

  • Fans were skeptical when they learned The Rock would play The Tooth Fairy.
  • The Rock's character is that of an ice hockey player who spends two weeks serving as The Tooth Fairy.
  • The film helped Dwayne Johnson break into family entertainment.

In this fantasy comedy that did surprisingly well at the box office despite critics savaging it, The Rock plays Derek Thompson "who does not believe in fairy tales" or "playing by the rules". A hard-nosed ice hockey player who enjoys knocking teeth out is recruited to serve two weeks as a tooth fairy, complete with wings. Even The Hurricane might have been able to make fun of Dwayne in this costume.

10 Wrestlers Who Had Main Cast Roles On TV Shows

Ashley Judd, Billy Crystal and Julia Andrews all co-star and it has good moments, as The Rock attempts to expand his appeal and become a mainstream movie star outside of action or adult-orientated content. It proved a popular mix, as he keeps producing new content in this field like the recent Jungle Cruise and Jumanji sequels, that have been hugely successful.

5 An Impressive Cast Couldn't Make Southland Tales Work In 2006 (41%)

Southland tales represented a mix of genres.

  • The Southland Tales screenplay shares an author with Donnie Darko.
  • Southland Tales was panned at the Cannes Film Festival.
  • Dwayne Johnson was figuring out his acting range at this point in his career.

This was an original screenplay by Richard Kelly who also directed Donnie Darko in this blending of genres. It's classified as a dystopian comedy thriller but shines the light onto many facets of our world from celebrity culture, surveillance, political corruption and more. It was shown at Cannes and received a terrible reception, running at over two and half hours long.

The cast is impressive though, everybody from Buffy's Sarah Michelle Gellar to Justin Timberlake, Miranda Richardson and even Kevin Smith show up. The Rock plays Boxer Santaros, an action star with political connections and is right at the heart of the story. This probably explains why he took the role, as it was early in his career and he was still finding out what worked in terms of his acting range.

4 Dwayne Johnson's Took An Early Foray Into Voice Acting With Planet 51 In 2009 (40%)

This animated film didn't land as well as moana.

  • Planet 51 was an animated feature film that blended science fiction and action.
  • The Rock voices the protagonist of the movie.
  • While critics responded poorly to Planet 51, it did turn a profit.

This is an animated CG sci-fi comedy produced by Tristar pictures and Spanish based Llion Animation. The Rock plays the protagonist Charles T Baker, a NASA astronaut who discovers Planet 51 on his mission. The 51 refers to everything being frozen in time and resembling 1950s America. Think Pleasantville with colour, set in space, and you will get a great idea.

Despite the critics not being a fan, it still turned a profit and at the time was the most expensive film produced in Spain. An excellent cast rounds out everything with Jessica Biel, Justin Long, Sean William Scott, John Cleese, Gary Oldman and others.

3 The Scorpion King Marked The Rock's First Time As A Leading Man In 2002 (37%)

The rock built off a star turn in the mummy returns.

  • The Rock had his first opportunity as a leading man in The Scorpion King.
  • The movie is set 5,000 years before the Mummy series.
  • For all its failings, The Scorpion King spawned three sequels.

This was The Rock's original solo film and spin off from his appearance in The Mummy Returns a year earlier. Obviously Universal felt there was potential in this character and delved into his backstory for a full narrative and turned the villain into Mathayus of Akkad and set him on a hero's journey set 5,000 years before the events of the Mummy series.

It lacks the playfulness and highs of the original movies, The Rock shows some flashes of his charm throughout and the series spawned three sequels for a total of four films, one of which helped launch David Bautista's film career. Rotten Tomatoes does warn you though "action adventures do not get much cheesier than the Scorpion King".

2 The Doom Film Was Not As Well Received As The Video Game It Was Based On In 2005 (34%)

It took some time for the popular game to become a movie.

  • Doom was immensely popular as a video game in the 1990s.
  • The Rock portrayed the character of The Sarge.
  • In his part, The Rock wields most of the signature weapons from the Doom video game.

Yet another early film choice (this seems to be a growing trend). Based off the hugely popular 1990s ID Software FPS video game about battling monster sent directly from a hell dimension, Doom was reworked a little from the original concept. The plot involves a portal to Mars buried deep within the Nevada desert and a squad of Marines sent out that reads like a loose reinterpretation of James Cameron's Aliens .

The fantastic Karl Urban and Bond Girl Rosmaund Pike turn up as co-stars, and The Rock plays The Sarge who gets to yield the destructive and distinctive weapon of choice from the games. It is lighthearted horror science fiction fun, and easily digestible, with it taking a decade for the film to come to screens.

1 It's Little Wonder Empire State Was Released Straight To DVD In 2013 (24%)

The rock played opposite rising stars liam hemsworth and emma roberts.

  • Empire State was a heist movie set in New York.
  • The Rock plays a detective in this film.
  • Empire State was based on a true story.

This was one of the few or only Dwayne Johnson films to bypass theaters and go straight to DVD. It looked good on paper with Liam Hemsworth and the young Emma Roberts co-starring in a New York armored-car heist, crossed with a realistic drama of being born on the wrong side of the tracks. The Rock plays veteran Detective James Ransome (that does sound cliched).

10 Wrestlers You'll Love If The Rock Is Your All-Time Favorite

It is all based on a true story so perhaps more "fiction" was needed to push this one into higher box office territory. Even if The Rock's films are mauled by critics (he sticks to what he does well and knows it), they perform well in terms of numbers so this is an unusual outlier in terms of his filmography.

Dwayne johnson returns as maui for moana 2 production with touching bts post.

Dwayne Johnson shares a new batch of behind-the-scenes images from Moana 2 teasing his return as Maui, and the post includes a touching caption.

Moana 2 Image Reveals The First Look At The Disney Princess's Return

  • Dwayne Johnson shares behind-the-scenes images of himself in a recording booth as he records lines for Maui in Moana 2 .
  • In his caption, Johnson discusses the importance of Polynesian culture in the Moana franchise and reveals that Maui is heavily inspired by his late grandfather.
  • In addition to an animated sequel, a live-action Moana movie is in the works.

Moana 2 gets a new tease from Dwayne Johnson, who shares a series of behind-the-scenes images. Released in 2016, Moana has since become one of the most popular and beloved animated Disney movies of the last decade, enjoying a great deal of success on Disney Plus. The world of the franchise was originally set to continue in the form of a TV show, but Disney CEO Bob Iger announced earlier this year that it would be retooled into a proper feature film sequel, with Johnson reprising his role as Maui and Auliʻi Cravalho returning for the title role.

Ahead of Moana 2 's release date later this year, Johnson takes to Instagram to share some behind-the-scenes images of him recording his voice lines as Maui. Check out the post below:

Accompanying the post is a touching caption, included separately below, which highlights the importance of Polynesian culture to the popular Disney franchise. Johnson also reveals that the character of Maui is actually heavily inspired by his grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia.

Bringing MAUI🪝 back to life for MOANA 2! So much fun becoming MAUI again - a character that changed my life in many ways - including the character of MAUI being inspired by my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia. The Polynesian cultural significance of the role and our story has touched families around the world and has easily become one of my truest honors to bring to life and share. New characters, new journeys, new music. Excited for you and your families around the world to join us on this journey. You will feel the mana.

Moana 2 Wishlist: 10 Things We Want To See In Disney's Upcoming Sequel

The future of the moana franchise explained, there are two major moana projects coming up.

A common sentiment that pops up in comments on Johnson's social media posts about Moana is some confusion about the future of the franchise. Johnson and Cravalho are both reprising their roles for the direct animated sequel, but this isn't the only continuation of the franchise that is planned. In addition to the animated sequel, there is also a live-action Moana movie in the works.

Somewhat confusingly, the live-action Moana movie will be a direct remake of the 2016 film . Disney has made many live-action remakes of its animated classics over the past decade (to varying degrees of success), but never has there been such a fast turn around between the animated original and the live-action reimagining. Johnson will be reprising his role as Maui for this live-action Moana movie, but Cravalho, notably, will not be playing the title role. According to Johnson, the remake has already found its new Moana actor , but the news hasn't yet been made public.

Johnson is the first actor in an animated Disney movie to play the same character in its live-action counterpart.

While the live-action film will be a retelling of the same story from the 2016 original, Moana 2 will pick up some time after the Moana ending , following the title character as she receives a call from her ancestors and embarks on a new adventure in the far seas of Oceania . The animated sequel will be hitting theaters later this year, while the live-action film will release next summer. For those who enjoy the franchise, then, there's certainly a lot to look forward to.

Moana 2 is the sequel to the 2016 animated adventure film about a young woman named Moana who journeys into the sea to end her island's curse. The film will see the return of Dwayne Johnson as the eccentric and musical demigod, with Auli'i Cravalho expected to reprise her role.

Five things to know about Patriots fourth-round pick Layden Robinson, a self-described ‘gritty’ player

Layden Robinson works out at the NFL Combine earlier this year.

The Patriots beefed up their offensive line again with their first pick on the final day of the 2024 NFL Draft.

New England selected Texas A&M guard Layden Robinson in the fourth round with the draft’s 103rd overall pick. It’s the second straight selection the Patriots have used on an offensive lineman, after they took Penn State offensive tackle Caedan Wallace in the third round.

Keep track of all the Patriots’ picks here.

Robinson, a five-year player for the Aggies, played right guard in college. Michael Onwenu began the 2023 season as the Patriots’ right guard before Sidy Sow took over in the middle of the year.

Here are five things to know about Robinson.

He was a three-year starter at Texas A&M

Robinson was a dependable player for the Aggies, starting all but four games at right guard over the last three years.

He didn’t allow a sack in 2021, giving up just eight pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. He earned All-SEC second-team honors as a result.

There was a bit of a dip in Robinson’s play in 2022. He gave up four sacks and 11 pressures that year, per PFF. However, he played a role in helping De’Von Achane rush for over 1,000 yards that year, which led the running back to be a second-round pick by the Dolphins in 2023.

Robinson got back on track in 2023, allowing just one sack and 10 pressures last season, per PFF. His play garnered him another spot on the All-SEC second team.

Scouts seem to have mixed reviews

There’s a reason why Robinson was selected in the fourth round despite putting up some solid seasons during his time in College Station. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. pointed to Robinson’s inconsistent play.

“You expect Layden Robinson to be a dominant performer week in, week out,” Kiper said on ESPN’s broadcast. “There were some games you said, ‘Boy, this guy’s exciting. He’s going to be a starter in the NFL.’ Other games, he was disappointing to me.”

Fellow ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller added that after the 2021 season, Robinson looked like a potential first-round pick for the 2023 draft. But that didn’t come to fruition due to inconsistent play and questions over his technique.

Robinson measured at 6-foot-3, 310 pounds at the combine and his pro day. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler believes he can be more a power blocker at the next level, though he questioned his upside.

“Overall, Robinson plays with a rugged, physical demeanor and the play strength to stay connected, but his middling mirror skills in protection will be targeted by NFL pass rushers,” Brugler wrote in “The Beast.” “He has a chance to provide depth for a power-based scheme in the NFL.”

Robinson models his game after a Cowboys Hall of Famer

Robinson believes he has the ruggedness required to play interior offensive line in the NFL.

“I’m a grinder, it’s been instilled in me for years, for a long time, especially with my coaching staff at Texas A&M,” Robinson told reporters Saturday. “I’m just going to be a grinder. I’m going to be tough, be gritty, and going after people over and over again. That’s how I do my play style.

“Growing up, I always looked up to Larry Allen. I loved the way he played the game, along with great offensive linemen like Quenton Nelson and Chris Lindstrom. Guys like that, you see their film and they’re popping off of tape with their strain and finishes. That’s kind of how I modeled my game.”

Allen played the first half of his career before Robinson was even born. Allen was one of the key players that was a part of the Cowboys’ dynasty in the 1990s, earning seven All-Pro and 11 Pro Bowl nods in his career to be named a Hall of Famer.

As for the toughness, Robinson has credited that to former Boston College coach Steve Addazio, who served as Texas A&M’s offensive line coach over the last two years.

Ahead of the draft, Robinson told KPRC 2 in Houston that his strongest area as a blocker is in the run game.

“That’s what I pride myself on, how I come off the ball and clear out gaps,” Robinson said. “That’s my strongest attribute.

“On pass blocking, I feel like the sky is the limit. I can definitely get a lot better at things technically. I’ve seen things I’ve noticed on film and with my trainer and how I can correct those things.”

Brugler would agree with that assessment.

“As a run blocker, Robinson is powerful at the point of attack with the ability to displace defenders on base and double teams,” Brugler wrote . “He has a stout anchor as a pass blocker plus the natural girth to maintain his spot, but his inconsistent balance and timing hurt his ability to maximize his length and widen rushers.”

Robinson’s football journey began at a young age, but was briefly paused

Robinson, who grew up just a couple dozen miles outside of Houston in Manvel, Texas, began playing football at 6 years old, but he stopped playing because he didn’t enjoy it.

After coaches approached him to play again, Robinson obliged, playing running back at first. However, Robinson said his frequent visits to his grandparents caused him to add weight, leading him to eventually move to offensive line, according to Brugler .

Robinson is into food and cooking

In addition to becoming a pro player on the gridiron, Robinson is hoping to become a pro in the kitchen. He’s a budding chef that’s a huge fan of the Food Network.

“I watched Bobby Flay with my mom growing up,” Robinson told KPRC 2. “I love ‘Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.’ I actually went to one of those restaurants Guy Fieri put on the show, Cool Runnings, Jamaican restaurant in Houston when I was little. I love to cook, My favorite dish to make is marinating steaks and cooking them on the grill.”

Robinson also enjoys watching pro wrestling, saying he’s a fan of Stone Cold Steve Austin and the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and likes playing video games.

“My favorite game of all-time is Assassin’s Creed,” Robinson told KPRC 2. “Ranked second is probably Batman, then WWE And Spiderman.”
