UNCP students create Lumbee history driving tour

Mark Locklear Special to The Robesonian

unc pembroke virtual tour

Unmai Arokiasamy gives a presentation on a newly-created Lumbee history driving tour. He and other students in professor Jaime Martinez’s Intro to Public History class at UNCP worked on the hour-long tour together.

PEMBROKE – Kevin Melvin has high hopes for a new interactive Lumbee history driving tour that helps visitors navigate some of the area’s most historic sites, from the North Carolina Indian Cultural Center to the original site of UNC Pembroke.

The hour-long tour–which includes stops at the Lumbee River, Old Main and the Lumbee Tribe’s headquarters — is a result of weeks of research by students in professor Jaime Martinez’s Intro to Public History class at UNCP.

“It turned out great!” said Melvin, the Lumbee Tribe’s historic preservation officer. “When I first met with the class, we discussed creating a tour for prospective students and parents, which would give them a better understanding of the area and get to know the history.”

Martinez stressed the importance of collaborating with the tribe and consulting with the local community throughout each project phase.

“I think it’s important in terms of our role as an institution to work with and serve our community, which is why we started with community members giving us tours and telling our students what they thought was important and should be emphasized,” Martinez said.

The through line of the tour focuses on community, sovereignty and autonomy, according to Martinez. The story map begins at the river near Harper Ferry Church and then stops at the cultural center, where there’s an emphasis on how the local community created community and church associations and pushed for education. It circles back to Old Main — the oldest building on campus — and tells how the university has evolved.

A virtual tour version was created using StoryMapJS, a software tool that highlights the locations of a series of events. Students also designed pamphlets. UNCP student and tribal member Unmai Arokiasamy said the project will educate visitors and local community members.

“We don’t always know all the history behind our ancestral lands,” Arokiasamy said. “This (map) can provide that relationship and cultural connection back to our history, which is exciting. I think this will change how people see our land and how we, as Lumbee people, see our land.”

Pine Residence Hall is a four-story, 300-bed, smoke free, co-ed residence hall offering suites of two designs. One design includes 51 suites featuring two double-occupancy bedrooms with a shared bathroom. The second design includes 24 single suites featuring four private bedrooms with a shared living room area and bathroom. Residents are expected to maintain a clean bathroom area, provide the cleaning supplies and toiletries needed for their suite.

Same gender suites are located throughout each floor of the residence hall.

Wireless Internet is available and the hall is fully wired for the Internet. Telephone service is not provided in student suites; however, emergency telephone call boxes to Campus Police are provided on each floor. A kitchenette, study lounges on each floor, a lounge with a large screen television, and a laundry and vending area are outstanding features of this residence hall. A security feature includes a card access system for entrance into the building for currently assigned residents and their accompanied guests. (Room size: double: 10 x 16; single: 8 x 12, living room area: 12 x 16)

Visitation for Pine Residence Hall is open visitation. Open visitation implies that restrictions are determined by roommates and suite mates according to each others’ rights and needs. Respect for the wishes and well-being of one’s roommate(s) is more important than someone’s desire to have guests. Students residing in Pine Hall are expected to view their academic responsibilities as their primary goal; therefore, studying takes preference over socializing in student residences. The guidelines for visitation are grounded in the academic schedule and are designed to balance a student’s responsibilities with individual and group needs.

All rooms are furnished with twin beds (80″ x 36″ mattresses), desks, desk chair, closets, dressers, and blinds. The living room areas of the single suites are furnished with a sofa, lounge chair, coffee table, and lamp table. Students are encouraged to bring accessories to personalize their room. Additionally, residence hall rooms have data connectivity, wireless internet access, laundry and vending room access, access to 24-hour per day campus police coverage, and trained professional residence staff ready to assist residents. Pine Hall is equipped with central heating and air conditioning.
