Narrated Driving Tour Apps by GuideAlong

Listen to an entertaining guide that automatically tells you stories about where you are while you drive..

You can tour Yellowstone on your own, but if you download the GuideAlong (previously GyPSy Guide) app, you’ll get an insider’s perspective of the park without having to go on a tour. It’s like having your own guide in the car with you.

“We’re travelers too. We all want the freedom to explore at our own pace and terms, but we want a local expert to direct us to the best places to go and what to see,” says Rick Bulich, managing director of GuideAlong. “Ultimately, we guide but you decide.”

As you drive, the app uses your location to automatically play perfectly timed commentary about history, geology, wildlife and more. Stories like how microscopic bacteria in Yellowstone’s hot springs that have enabled scientists to find our distant ancestors, cure diseases and even solve murders gives you a better understanding of Yellowstone. The app also tells you about upcoming sights, so you have time to decide whether to stop. The best part is you don’t need cell phone service, signal or wifi. Download content to your device ahead of time, and the app determines your location and autoplays using GPS.

Bundle your Yellowstone tour with tours that cover Beartooth Highway, Badlands and the Black Hills, Rocky Mountain National Park, Utah and more.

Using the GuideAlong App: Audio Tours for Awesome Road Trips

Have you ever wished that you had a tour guide in the backseat of your car for road trips through national parks or along scenic byways?

The beauty of GuideAlong App ( formerly known as GyPSy Guide ) is that these location-based audio tours perfectly direct you to all of the best things to see and do along your way so you don’t miss a thing. Plus they are:

  • Easy to use
  • Allow you to travel and explore at your own pace
  • Quick to download for offline use

The GuideAlong driving tours are the best audio guided tours that you can download that provide narrated guides for your road trips and scenic drives.

Bixby Bridge along the Pacific Coast Highway using the GyPSy Guide App

The GuideAlong Audio Tours provide a guided commentary that uses free satellite GPS signal along with the GPS on your cell phone.

It IS just like bringing you own tour guide along for the ride!

Even Yellowstone National Park recommends the GuideAlong narrated driving tours as one of their main tips for seeing the park with the best audio guides tours app.

How Does the App Work?

Begin by downloading the app and then selecting the audio tour for the destination of your choice.

Click the link below and then scroll to the bottom of the page to download the best audio tour app from the Apple Store or on Google Play .

Using free GPS signals provided by satellites around the world as well as your phone’s GPS chip, the GuideAlong app determines your location.

As you drive along, the GPS signal uses your location and when you pass a pre-determined point, the commentary from the app plays pre-recorded content automatically.

You don’t have to do anything to queue the commentary.

Your GuideAlong narrator may suggest side trips to take, crack a corny joke, give a history lesson of the area, share insights on significant historical figures from years gone by, or present behind-the-scenes stories to enhance your visit.

Often locals know of little known tips and locations to visit . GuideAlong shares them with you too. You can travel at your own pace, choose to skip a side route, spend a little longer at a scenic overlook, or return to a highlight on the route that sparked your interest.

The path and the timeline are up to you. You can start anywhere on the tour or start from the official tour start location. It is up to you.

Each of the audio guides that you purchase from the GuideAlong app are yours to keep. Forever.

There are no time limits to its use and no monthly subscriptions to maintain. As tours are updated, you will receive FREE updates.

Our GuideAlong Reviews

Sometimes all we need is a suggestion from others to inspire us to try something new. These GuideAlong reviews from simplyjolayne.com articles show our enthusiastic support of these app tours.

The Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina

In his research, my husband, Chris found an app called  GuideAlong . It was an excellent guided tour throughout the park. Using the wonders of GPS and satellites, the commentary played automatically as we passed a GPS point, sharing behind-the-scene stories, tips, side trips, and driving directions. The guide was excellent. Vibrant Fall Foliage in North Carolina

Yosemite Falls

Chris and I highly recommend the  GuideAlong app for Yosemite National Park  or other national parks you may be visiting this summer. The guides are available for a number of destinations, and provide lots of information, history, significant contributions of different people, and random interesting information. How Do I Access the GuideAlong App?

The App is free to download from the Apple Store or on Google Play (scroll to the bottom of the page). You would then buy individual tours or bundles as IN-APP purchases.

Need a refresher on how to download an app ?

Follow these simple instructions:

  • Open the Apple or Google Play App Store to GET apps for your device.
  • Search for the GuideAlong app.
  • Touch the “GET” button to download the app to your device (Note, there will be In-App Purchases).
  • Click the button to Install the app on your device. If you see “OPEN” the app, you have already downloaded the app and simply need to open it on your device.
  • Search or browse for content or destinations on the GuideAlong App that you wish to purchase.

What Happens if the Area You Visit Does Not Have a Great Cell Signal?

Download the GuideAlong App and the tour you have selected while you DO have wifi or good cell service.

Because the app uses the magic of GPS to automatically play the audio tours, you do not need to have cell service to use the app once you have downloaded your tour .

The GPS signal comes from satellites and is free.

Reminder * Download the App and your selected tour BEFORE you set off on your adventures.

I hope you love it.

I have never heard of this app. I wish they did destinations on the East Coast. I would buy it to get narrated tours of Skyline Drive in Shenandoah Park.

They have added more tours in the past year and I am sure they will continue to add more. Keep checking back.

This is so cool! I had no idea GyPSy Guide existed, and I really wish I’d known for my Utah Mighty 5 road trip. What a missed opportunity! I’ll know better now for my next road trip – thank you. Xx Sara

What a great travel app! New to me, I will definitely be sharing this with my kids on our next road trip. Thanks for sharing it – we love hearing local stories and legends.

This sounds awesome! Thanks for sharing about this resource!

GyPSy Guides are terrific! I purchased the Yosemite and the Candian Rockies tours and so happy that I did. The auto tour added so much to our experience.

We used the GyPSY app for the first time in Maui for Haleakala NP and the Road to Hana. We really enjoyed it, I cant wait to use it again at other parks!

This is such a good idea! Definitely the sort of tool I’d use as I’m not a guided tour kinda gal.

How did I not know this was a thing? This is definitely something that I will check out before our next vacation. Thank you for such an informative post on something I didn’t know existed!

Wow this is such an awesome app, I did not know this existed!

You learn something new every day! I will look into this app!

I love that there is an element of humanness to this guide. And of course, Gypsy Guides sounds great for those who prefer to listen rather than read. I had heard about this, so will look up the Hawaii one now 🙂

GyPSy Guide seems to be the best! We are planning an Australia trip soon and I will download this app. The tip to download earlier if there is no phone signal is great! Thank you for this great blog post. 🙂

What a great concept. I have never heard of it but will keep a lookout for the Australian ones. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! This is such an amazing application. Love the idea behind it. Self-guided tours are the best.

I’ve never heard of this before. But, since we are traveling to more and more places like this, I’m sure it will come in handy. Thanks for sharing!

Oh I’ve never heard of this app before but what a fantastic idea, thank you for introducing it to me!

This sounds like a great idea for an app in the modern day! I hadn’t heard about it before but I’ll definitely be checking it out now.

This sounds like a perfect app. We’ve used a similar app before on a tulip route in Flevoland, the Netherlands and thought it so convenient.

I’ve never heard of anything like this, but it’s such an incredible idea! That’s for sharing such a thorough review

This is such a helpful tool! I’ve gone on so many road trips and never new about GuideAlong. Thanks for sharing this.

What great useful information! I will bookmark this and remember to use on my travels

I pinned this for later as the hubs and I are discussing a road trip this fall. Very cool!

This peaked my interest so much that I had a look at their other guides and found that they have an Australian guide for the Great Ocean Road, so I may use that at some point. Thanks for the info!

Arches & Canyonland NP

We recently took along the Gypsy audio trip thru both of these parks. We downloaded prior to our visit. There was no cell service or internet at the park. The narrator was always with us. A map was included to follow along, but we chose only to listen to the narrator. We just activated the audio as we came close to the park. The narrator started to tell us about the park, the history and made suggestions for photo op’s. The narrator told us when the pull off’s were coming up and what to expect. This audio trip made our adventure much more exciting. We didn’t miss a thing at the parks. If we chose not to stop, the narrator just knew and continued on the trip. I can’t say enough about these trips. We have used them before in Glasier and Yellowstone. We are presently working on Bryce and Zion. Most of all, my husband found the narrator quite amusing, not annoying. After all, he is with you quite awhile along the trip. We made sure our iPad was being charged as we drove and left it on all day. The narrator would come on and off as we approached areas of interest. We definately recommend and will continue to use when we travel to other areas. Just downloaded Grand Canyon. Gypsy, keep up the good work. Well appreciated.

Hana in Hawaii

First I want to say that we started out early in the morning hoping to beat the crowd. Although we thought most of the tour guidance on the app was good, all of the “have to” locations that the app suggested were completely full when we approached them. We later found that there were some other obtainable waterfalls that we not crowded that were not mentioned. So we ended up driving for hours and only stopped at 2 tourist stands to get banana bread and a treat. Ugggg, it was a really long day of just driving. I wish we had had a “heads up” that all the sights would be full and we would have cut our trip short. Also learning on the app the day of the trip that we needed tickets to the park 24 hours ahead of time was not helpful information. Last but not least, the history of the rulers was repetitive and was not what we wanted to listen to the whole way down the mountain. We thought the guide was giving directions to get down but instead gave an account of the rulers. Although I think this app is a great idea and had some great info going up, it missed some opportunities to see some sites that our guide book had mentioned. On the morning of we chose to forgo the guidebook info and solely use this app. We would use the guidebook next time. As I shared before, without opportunities to park and explore because of the crowdedness, we ended up with a very long day of driving.

You need this app!

We just got back from Maui and if you don’t get this app and keep it open while driving around you’re missing out on a huge part of your trip. First off, the narrator’s voice is so pleasant and soothing that anything he says sounds great. You look forward to him just talking about anything just to keep listening to him talk. The points of interest and tips for parking or other things were fabulous. It is so accurate you’d think he was in the car with you. He says look for a sign and you then see it. The stories of the history of Hawaii were great. I’ve been to Hawaii 6 times but now I have a really good idea of the history from the whaling days to now. How it became a state was also eye opening. Really interesting and easy to listen to and hearing it while driving was great. Road to Hana guided audio us a must. You can’t do it by following a book, sorry Maui Revealed, and I had that with me too. Best money you’ll spend on a driving audio guide. No joke. Just leave app open as you drive around audio will chime in every now and then. It changes a boring drive to a really amazing tour. I’m sure all the drives are great. We did Maui and it was amazing. Enjoy.

GuideAlong Review: The Only National Park Guide You Need

March 25, 2022

National Park Guide

If you have plans to visit a national park soon, do not head into the parks without GuideAlong (formerly known as GyPSy guides). My entire family is hooked on these national park guides, and we’ve started planning our vacations around where the GuideAlong is offered. The concept might be unfamiliar to you, but this GuideAlong review will fill you in on everything you need to know before getting a Guide yourself.

Whenever you’re traveling somewhere new, have you ever felt like you were looking at the extremely famous place or landmark and just thinking “well, cool! What is it though?,” or have you been driving along in a National Park scouring so intensely for a parking lot that you miss what you should be looking for entirely? GuideAlong literally solves this problem!

I’m so excited for more adventurous people to discover this game changing National Park guide. We first fell in love with the guide on our family’s first visit to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, and I can confidently say it changed the entire trajectory of our trip, and I have the confidence in this product to say it will do the same for you. We had a group of all different ages and interests on our excursion into Wyoming, and each person was extremely invested in what the guide (we named him Steve!) had to say about each stop along the way.

Most of the trip planning fell to me, and I was SO anxious about how our time in the actual parks would go. It’s really hard to feel prepared going into trips like this, and I didn’t want to spend the entire ride looking down at the map but still feeling like we weren’t really seeing it all.

GuideAlong provides context to the beauty of America’s National Parks that would take you years to study up on otherwise. We listened to the guide in the car between each destination, and once we were out looking around, we knew exactly what we were looking at, which sites we absolutely had to see and just how much appreciation the unique geography deserved.

If you can’t tell, you need this app in your life before venturing out to your next National Park! If you aren’t already convinced, here are some answers to popular questions you might find yourself currently asking.

Guide Along Review

What is the guidealong.

GuideAlong Guides are essentially GPS-based audio guides that help you discover more and plan less at your destination. These guides play over the speaker in your car and activate a specific audio guide soundbite when your GPS location crosses over a certain point, making the audio guide almost specifically tailored to you and your trip. The guide helps you find hidden gems, plan your trip with a lot less hassle and hear behind the scenes information that would be hard to find otherwise.

gypsy tour yellowstone

Does the GuideAlong work without Cellphone Service?

This is one of the best parts of Guide Along- you don’t need cellular or internet to play the guide! Many people know that national parks are notorious for having zero cell service or internet, so this is another really handy aspect of the guides.

Even if you don’t download the tour before losing service, you will still be good to go to start and stop the tour at any point afterwards. Even apple maps and google maps don’t really work if you start the directions after losing service, so this is a huge perk! GyPSy guides work using satellite coverage, and we have never had a single issue in our many hours using the guides in many places without cell service.

Just make sure you download the app and purchase your tour before losing service- after that you’re good to go.

Do I need a GuideAlong if I’m Planning to Walk Most of the Time?

Yes! Unless you are walking literally from your house into the park and back, GuideAlong is perfect even if you’re planning to be hiking most of the day. The guide will give you directions to popular trailheads, helpful tips and tricks that you might not have known and will help once you’re out of the car, as well as information about what to skip or not skip in and out of the car during your visit. So even if you’re going to walk for the majority of the time, I still recommend getting a guide!

Do I wish the GuideAlong followed you out into the wilderness? Yes! Haha maybe someday they will make that addition!

What Else is There to Love about GuideAlong Guides?

After you’ve purchased the tour for your next National Park destination, I always recommend checking out their extremely detailed trip planners on the  GuideAlong website!

These audio guides give you off-the-beaten-path tips, how to beat crowds, insider information, historical tidbits, interesting wildlife statistics and totally set the tone for your entire drive and trip. I promise they are worth far more than the already affordable price.

GuideAlong Review: Which Guides Have We Tried?

I have absolutely no doubt that all the GuideAlong Guides are amazing, but here are the ones we have personally tried and LOVED. I cannot wait to head off to more parts of the country and use these guides to explore as many National Parks as possible!

Big Sur – PCH Hwy 1 Guide

Other guidealong review / tips / what to know.

  • Try testing out your audio system beforehand. If it’s a rental car, maybe just check it out before leaving your accommodation so you can purchase a connector or anything you need before leaving civilization.
  • Bring a car compatible phone charger. You don’t want to run into a dead battery and miss out on this amazing tour!
  • The Guide Works forward and backward.  Depending on the National Park, some popular routes are loops (like Yellowstone) and some are a one direction, there and back (like Big Sur / PCH Hwy 1). The neat thing about the GuideAlong Guide is it works both forward and backward for your route, so you never have to worry about following a specific itinerary or path. The GPS will just pick up on your position and trigger the audio.

Please let me know if you have any other questions I can help answer about these incredible GuideAlong Guides. They are life changing, and I want as many people as possible to take advantage of this resource!

Where to Stay in Yellowstone

Before you start your trip, decide what type of adventure you want

Explore yellowstone with comfort and convenience.

Stay Outside the Park and Day Trip

Hotels, cabins, guest ranches and lodges exist inside the Park, but at a premium – expect to pay between $150-$400+ per night.  And you need to be prepared, reservations must be booked months or even a year in advance.

Landmark and historic lodges like Old Faithful Inn , Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel & Cabins or Lake Yellowstone Hotel & Cabins are perfect for people who want the ultimate convenience of being inside the Park, and close to geysers and wildlife, prefer a bit more comfort, but don’t have to be too concerned about cost.

Campgrounds for tenting and RV are perfect for those that prefer to connect with the outdoors.

There are 12 Yellowstone campgrounds for tents and RV sites with services ranging from showers, laundry facilities or basic pit toilets for those that don’t mind roughing it.

Again these need to be booked well in advance.  Only five campgrounds in Yellowstone permit advanced reservations, including Bridge Bay , Canyon , Madison , Fishing Bridge and Grant Village .

The rest are on a first come, first served basis, and in the peak of summer you can see lines already forming at 7am!

Certainly staying outside the Park opens up a wider choice of accommodation styles and budget.

And you’ll most likely want to align where you base yourself (at least initially) with which entrance you first enter the Park.

The five entrances to the Park and their gateway towns are;

West Entrance – West Yellowstone North Entrance – Gardiner & Bozeman Northeast Entrance – Silver Gate-Cooke City East Entrance – Cody South Entrance – Jackson – Grand Teton National Park

Yellowstone National Park with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

West Yellowstone (14 miles to Grand Loop Drive)

The largest of the communities and closest to Midway Geyser Basin with Grand Prismatic Spring and Upper Geyser Basin with Old Faithful .

The town has a wide array of lodging, dining and other attractions, making it the most popular (and busiest) base for people visiting Yellowstone.

Gardiner (5 miles to Grand Loop Drive)

The entrance to Yellowstone Park from the town of Gardiner is quite stately.  Passing under the Roosevelt Arch   you feel like you are entering another world, and you are.  You don’t have to travel far to see Mammoth Hot Springs and the elk herds that flock to this area.

And if you are wondering if there are any areas where you can soak in the hot springs, Boiling River is one of only two areas in the park where you are permitted to swim.  The hot springs here feed warm water into the Yellowstone River.

Silver Gate-Cooke City (28 miles to Tower Junction)

If you enter or exit the Park using the Northeast Entrance Station via Silver Gate – Cooke City, then you will drive through the Lamar Valley between the entrance and Tower Junction.

And if you’re here to see wildlife, then Lamar Valley is your destination.  Often referred to as the Serengeti of the United States, this wide broad valley is a mecca for serious wildlife watchers. Bison, elk, bears, wolves, antelopes and otters are just a few of the species you might spot in this rich wildlife habitat.

Pack binoculars and a spotting scope.   (Scopes and camera lenses can be rented in outdoor adventures stores).

The town is tiny but offers a good, if limited, selection of accommodation and dining choices.

Cody (26 miles to Fishing Bridge)

If you want to combine your trip to Yellowstone with getting your cowboy on, then historic Cody offers Old West charm.  There are a number of summer rodeos, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and western music venues.

It’s the “wildwest way into Yellowstone”.

Jackson (78 miles to West Thumb)

Jackson and the neighbouring town of Teton Village at the ski resort are arguably the most glamorous of the towns bordering the National Parks.  Celebrities and the wealthy fly into the small airport in their private jets, hence you’ll find a good selection of fancy restaurants, art galleries and stores to browse.

But you’ll also find a community of hard core mountain addicts and descendants of the pioneering families in trendy local brew pubs.

The town square features two archways made of shed antlers from the nearby National Elk Refuge. The National Museum of Wildlife Art has an indoor collection including Peaceable Kingdom by Edward Hicks and an outdoor sculpture trail.
