Toddlers are fun to travel with because you get to experience the excitement and wonder of discovering the world through the eyes of your children (or grandchildren).    

Young children can be a challenge though and need plenty of activities to keep them busy. You can’t just grab any list off the internet.   So choosing the right location is key to an amazing vacation. 

These kid-friendly destinations are recommended based on personal experience by families that have actually visited with their own toddlers.  They all have in-depth travel guides and reviews on their own blogs.  So don’t forget to check out some of the links for each location.

Valais region, Switzerland

The first recommendation for a toddler-friendly destination is from Corina, founder, and writer at  Packed Again . She wrote “Having twin toddlers, I feel it is a must to choose your destination where the kids can be outside in nature, and there’s no better place than Switzerland to find this.

The  Valais region is in the heart of the Swiss Alps  and there is no shortage of picnic places near a stream, playgrounds or even a great lake. Just perfect for our toddlers to get dirty, throw as many stones in the water as they can and build bridges with branches. On top of all, we might be able to spot one or two mountain animals in a magnificent and safe surrounding. For me, it is the perfect toddler destination.”

Etosha National Park, Namibia

Jenny from  Travelynn Family  has experience traveling in Africa with kids.  She tells us “Yes, you can take toddlers on safari!”

Earlier this year we traversed Africa in a Land Rover with our boys (our youngest was 2) for almost 4 months. We took them on a lot of safaris, but Etosha National Park, Namibia, was definitely the best one for his age group. Firstly it’s very affordable (kids are free!), and wildlife spotting is easy due to the vast open plains, lack of vegetation, and an abundance of wildlife. Colorado USA

We couldn’t help but include our beloved state of Colorado.  Although the entire state is beautiful, we suggest Glenwood Springs for Toddlers.  Situated just 3 hours from Denver, this little town at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado River is a perfect place for families.  

Hot Springs, waterfall hikes, roller coasters, and skiing all in one area.  You can combine this with a trip to Aspen or Vail.  The best way to experience the town is to stay at the historic Hotel Colorado or in an RV.   You can even rent easily nearby at Outdoorsy with this  $50 off coupon .

Nice, France

Shanna from  There and Back Again Family Travel Blog  suggests families with toddlers should visit Nice, France.

“Nice is a cute as a button town in the south of France on the Mediterranean Sea.  It is a perfect escape for a family with toddlers because of its manageable size, easy public transport options and abundance of easy, kid-friendly day trips.

We loved shopping at the Cours Saleya market in Nice for goodies, having picnics and playing at the Promenade du Paillon (a huge park, playground and green space at the heart of the city) and exploring Nice’s narrow, cobbled streets and alleyways.”

Barcelona, Spain

Traveling with a baby and toddler,   Diana from The Elusive Family , was able to recommend Barcelona, Spain based on personal experience.

“Sitting on the coast of the Mediterranean, Barcelona offers toddlers the opportunity to run amuck on La Rambla or explore the majestic L’Aquarium Barcelona, our top pick for toddlers. Boasting the largest sea tunnel in Europe, L’Aquarium is a perfect place to spend the afternoon watching sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of species swim in a vast Oceanarium.”

Keri Hedrick from  Family Travel in the Middle East   responded: “Dubai is a city crying out to be explored by families. Toddlers will love the huge variety of waterparks and splash parks available across the city from Duplo Splash Safari at Legoland Waterpark to the Splashers area of Atlantis, designed specifically for smaller kids.

The beach and resort weather is great almost year around, however, in the absolute hottest summer months there are still plenty of indoor activities too.  The huge Kidzania and Dubai Aquarium at Dubai Mall are always a hit, as is Mattel Playtown at City Walk ideal for youngsters.

Don’t forget to check out a desert safari during your stay which will include an opportunity to ride a camel – and top your visit off with the spectacular light and sound fountain show outside Burj Khalifa every night.”

Chicago, Illinois

Catherine from  Traveling with the Littles  suggests that  “If the weather is agreeable the best places to take toddlers are Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park.

Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, both places are great for small children to stretch their legs!  Millennium Park boasts the ‘Bean’ which is an enormous reflective metal ‘bean’ in which toddlers can admire their reflections and scamper about. Also found in Millennium Park is Crown Fountain, an interactive five-story fountain that periodically shoots water out onto waiting children.  Maggie Daley Park’s Play Garden is replete with a colossal playground, a ‘Watering Hole,’ a boardwalk, and an ‘Enchanted Forest.”

Sanur, Bali, Indonesia

Kate Comer from  Rolling Along With Kids  explains that “Exploring South East Asia with toddlers can be tricky.

Sanur, located on the island of Bali in Indonesia , is easy to navigate with toddlers and you can also enjoy the beautiful culture that Bali has to offer. The flat, paved beach path is easy to walk along with young kids. Our favorite way to spend time in Sanur is to visit one of the many beach clubs with pools and playgrounds located along the beach path.”

Seattle, Washington, USA

I have to agree with Astrid from  The Wandering Daughter  when she recommends  Seattle, Washington for toddlers .  She wrote a guide on her blog and summarized the city for us.

“The city of Seattle, WA offers families with toddlers plenty of options to explore and play. With over 400 outdoor parks and play areas, as well as family-friendly museums, there is no shortage of things to do for families in Seattle.

By far the best spot for families to visit in the city is the Seattle Center, with its giant fountain for water play, art and music inspired playground, and the iconic Space Needle offering panoramic views of the city. Also not to be missed is the Children’s Museum, where toddlers can engage with hands-on educational exhibits.”

La Paz, Bolivia

After 4 months of traveling around South America,  Amanda at  Great Big Family Adventure  recommends La Paz, Bolivia as a perfect destination in South America for toddlers.

“For a 1 to 3-year-old,  La Paz, Bolivia  would be cool. It is a large city but connected by cable cars which are fun and cheap. There is a large Central Park with amusement rides and a large boardwalk over the city to Pipiripi, the local Children’s museum with lots of exciting hands-on activities for children of all ages and parents too!”

Reykjavik, Iceland

With a roundup of their own, the  Wandermust Family  wrote that  “Iceland is a really hot (well not literally) family travel destination right now!  I was worried when we went that it wouldn’t live up to the hype but I can happily report that it did not disappoint!

Whether you are traveling in Winter or summer, staying in Reykjavik or going beyond the Golden Circle there is just so much to do with kids!  Our favorite thing was exploring all of the outdoor activities like chasing waterfalls, discovering black sand beaches and meeting Icelandic horses!  It is a great outdoor adventure holiday for all the family”

Tokyo, Japan

When asked for a recommendation for destinations in Asia,  Wisterian Watertree   wrote “The biggest city in the world is also one of the toddler-friendliest. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of sights accessible with a stroller.

Everything from thousand-year-old temples to high-tech marvels like the tallest TV tower in the world all sits along trains and subway lines, which makes getting around an easy project, even on rainy days. And there are public parks and playgrounds dotting the cityscape everywhere. On top of that, this is the city in the world which has the most Michelin stars – but any everyday meal will be as tasty as a feast in a far more expensive Japanese restaurant in your home country.

One of our favorite things is going to see the different shrines of Tokyo, especially during a festival. Your kids can participate and there are typically lots of interesting foods and activities to try – from shooting ranges with actual cork guns to enormous griddles full of okonomiyaki in the making.”

New York, New York USA

Based on their own time in the big city, Cath at  Passports and Adventures  recommends  New York City.

“New York is a great city to visit with toddlers. We visited with our two-year-old son and found plenty of toddler-friendly activities to do. Such as a water ferry ride around the tip of Manhattan, a trip to the 86 th  floor of the Empire State Building and even a trip around Central Park.

The bright lights of Times Square will fascinate them, just be aware of the noise level for them. With museums, plenty of hotels, and restaurants and diners galore, New York is definitely a city that can be visited with toddlers.”

Tuscany, Italy

When asked, Marta from  Learning Escapes , replied you should pick Tuscany for a family vacation!

“A destination I loved when our kids were toddlers and that I recommend to all young families is the gorgeous   Italian region of Tuscany .  International visitors tend to know Tuscany for its cultural attractions and wineries but it is an incredibly family-friendly location and many Italian families vacation here, giving it a wonderful local feel.

The biggest attractions for families with toddlers here is the coast: it is beautiful, safe and well served, with a vast choice of hotels, campsites and resorts to suit all budgets. In terms of entertainment, the choice is endless too: you can relax making sand castles, go visit local farms for cute animal encounters, let the kids wander in car-free hilltop villages and even go to theme parks!”

Phuket, Thailand

After spending 10 days in Phuket with toddlers,  Brandi from Toddler Abroad  has a   trustworthy resource for Thailand .  Plus, we’ve been dreaming of taking our own kids there.

“Phuket has a number of excellent beaches and other toddler-friendly things to do. It’s incredibly cheap and Thai people love children. Our toddler’s favorite thing to do was ride tuk-tuks around the island.”

La Fortuna, Costa Rica

We loved northern Costa Rica, so I just had to add it to this list.  The La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano area is an exciting holiday destination with toddlers.  In we left Colorado and feet of snow behind to enjoy the beaches, hiking, and wildlife.

We hiked the Arenal Volcano and spent lunch watching the clouds and smoke dance along the top of the volcano.  In the evening we soaked in the hot springs with the locals.  The following days were spent enjoying the sloths, monkeys, toucans, iguanas, and Cayman at the Proyecto Asis animal rescue and Caño Negro Wildlife Reserve.

Moab, Utah USA

After visiting the area ourselves with 4 kids, we agree with Kristie from  World is Wide , with her recommendation of Moab.

“Moab, Utah is a fantastic family destination for all ages. It’s our family’s favorite place on the planet, and it has been since our kids were toddlers. It’s got all the ingredients for an ideal toddler destination: two amazing national parks (Arches and Canyonlands), hiking trails galore, dinosaur tracks and remains, and lots and lots of sand. “

Lake Bled, Slovenia

My Dad’s heritage is from Slovenia and I visited with my grandmother when I was younger, so I was excited to hear Chelsea from  Pack More Into Life  choose the beautiful Lake Bled.

They have some of the most beautiful beaches for a family day out, as well as being the home to all of Australia’s  best theme parks ,  all of which have areas dedicated to younger children. There are also some fantastic playgrounds and parklands, and several places to visit for native animal encounters, such as Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary or Fleay’s Fauna Park.”

London, England

Cath of  Passports and Adventures  has written specifically on their blog about  things to do in London with a toddler .

“London might not seem like the sort of place to vacation with a toddler, but it has so much to offer. From visiting SeaLife and taking a ride on the London Eye, to exploring the Tower of London and more, it is a city that has it all for toddlers. Tel Aviv, Israel

The last and another unique pick comes from Melissa at  The   Family Voyage .  “We’ve taken toddlers to Tel Aviv twice and it’s become a family favorite!

There’s never a shortage of activities, whether you like relaxing at the beach, sampling food at the open-air markets, strolling along the boardwalk and the leafy boulevards or even visiting the weekly craft fair in the middle of the city.

I had heard Ireland before – so it’s on our list. Any chance you’ve visited?

Actually, we have and it was wonderful. We traveled with 3 kids, the youngest a toddler and grandma. We have wonderful family memories. We moved a little too much though. We moved almost every day but it wasn’t necessary. I think we should have picked one or two central places to stay and done day trips. The highlights for us were waterfall hikes, the castles and a hawk walk by a local bird rescue.

I love continuing to add to my growing list of places to visit with my kids. I have yet to make it to the United Arab Emirates and think this would be a really interesting place to explore a different culture and environment to the places we normally travel. Thanks.

The 10 best destinations to travel with your toddler

Traveling with a toddler is a very specific type of joy — and challenge. It's a period of extreme and amazing growth marked by the most wonderful curiosity and unbridled excitement, not to mention plenty of mood swings, frustrations and surprises that even the most tapped-in parent can't plan for.

As a very frequent traveler, I indoctrinated my toddler into the jet-set lifestyle in her infancy — at two-and-a-half, she's been to 15 countries on five continents and stayed at more than 100 hotels. I feel extremely fortunate to have a quite adaptable little companion on my hands (and occasionally still in my arms). But, of course, most kids don't grow up in this way, which means the disruption of getting on an airplane and checking into a resort, however dreamy, is not always the smoothest.

In our experience, however, some destinations and hotels, in particular, provide a softer landing pad than others. This may be thanks to an especially magical setting, lots of toddler-friendly activities close at hand, or a property that offers plenty of the amenities that traveling parents and their little ones need in order to be comfortable and feel at home.

Here is a top 10 list of the most phenomenal places, far and near, that speak beautifully to kiddos aged one to three and their parents.

Our daughter had just entered toddlerhood when we ventured to spend two weeks in Vietnam , where it felt as if she was a celebrity. Kids, especially little ones, seem to be universally adored across the country, whether we were in the city or at a remote beach resort. That fact alone made us feel at home, but add to it the numerous ways she was stimulated and surprised by the rich culture and cuisine of a quite foreign country, and you have a recipe for a trip bursting with fun and curiosities.

Ho Chi Minh City is the most bustling of Vietnam's metropolitan centers and isn't the first place I would visit with a new walker. However, Hanoi in the north, a lush French-inflected city, provides lots of exciting sights and wide sidewalks on which to stroll in the cooler mornings when the city wakes up and dances, exercises and socializes through its early hours. We all loved watching with fascination.

The busy food markets also kept all our attention. Perhaps surprisingly, Vietnam has quite a lot of beautiful beach areas as well as more expected historical and cultural landmarks. Everywhere we went, people wanted to hold our daughter or take photos with her — so prepare yourself for plenty of that. Fortunately, our toddler is usually amenable, and when she wasn't it was just fine, too.

Where to stay

In the city, the fantastically and dramatically designed small luxury hotel Capella Hanoi offered incredibly personalized hospitality — including lavishing lots of attention on our toddler — along with exceptional cuisine and a flawless location for taking exciting walks. Rates start from $420 per night.

Villas at Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, Hoi An , come with a private butler, and ours was beyond sweet with our daughter. He brought her pool toys and chilled fruit at random, pushed her around in the complimentary stroller when my husband and I wanted to ride the beach cruisers around the property, taught her Vietnamese words, and even introduced her to his young son via video call. Rates start from $670 per night.

Punta Mita, Mexico

Thanks to the seamless accessibility of Puerto Vallarta from so many U.S. cities, you only need a weekend to savor the paradise that is Punta Mita, a sprawling oceanfront resort on Mexico 's Pacific Coast, just an hour's drive up the coast from the airport.

In the former fishing village, beaches are dreamy and made dreamier by full-service beach clubs and delicious restaurants, as well as waves to surf, sea turtles, and eye-popping sunsets of reds and purples that don't even seem real.

Active families can wander or bike along the tropical nature trails, tool around in golf carts or play a round of golf. It's a haven for families, especially with young children.

The Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is where I first realized just how sweet it is to be a guest of Four Seasons with a little one in tow.

There was the crib complete with a stuffed animal and special amenities kit (including a teeny toothbrush), diapers just in case we forgot them, an adorably petite bathrobe, and alphabet sponges spelling my daughter's name.

When we hung out at the infinity family pool, which melds into the ocean beyond, an attendant so wisely — and kindly — offered to bring out and set up a Pack 'n Play to give us a break from the relentless watch of keeping an excited toddler out of a body of water. While it's not toddler appropriate, we were thrilled at the lazy river, where infinite pool floats provided a steady stream of entertainment and tiny sunbeds made for one of my favorite photo ops. Over the past few years, people have begun discovering the approachable charms of Portugal. It's perhaps Europe's most accessible country and one of its most beautiful — if you've seen a photo of its aquamarine beaches you can understand why they took my breath away.

The Algarve is a region known for its spectacular sands and quaint little fishing towns. Meanwhile, even the capital of Lisbon has a special and laid-back energy that makes it widely appealing.

There's the National Tile Museum with interactive painting workshops for families, beautiful parks and gardens, and a fantastic Oceanarium. Parents traveling with a toddler can thrill them with a cruise down the Tagus River, which flows right through the colorful city, or take a ride on one of the emblematic vintage street cars that scale ancient, labyrinthine streets.

When tummies start rumbling, a fantastic destination is the Time Out Market, which has virtually every cuisine and dish for the pickiest eaters and is stocked with high chairs aplenty. Sintra, about a 45-minute train ride away from the capital, feels like a real-life Disneyland. Its vibrant, palatial homes, like the sunshine-yellow Pena National Palace, might spark some fun games of pretend.

There's perhaps no hotel brand in Europe more kid- and family-centric than Martinhal, which recently opened Martinhal Lisbon Oriente in the city, right by the Oceanario de Lisboa — featuring some 8,000 sea creatures — and the interactive Pavilion of Knowledge science museum with a technicolor play area.

The luxury accommodations are actually self-catered apartments with washers and dryers, smart Smeg appliances, a Family & Baby Concierge service, Raposinhos (Little Fox) kids club and child-care programming down to babies. Rates start from $230 per night.

Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort is set on its own beach in a protected national park at the southernmost tip of Portugal. This area is known for its fantastic surfing and is a particularly stunning place to relax and unwind after a day spent city sightseeing. The Creche child-care option is available to younger toddlers (up to 23 months), while the Raposinhos two- to three-year-old programming includes storytime, puppet shows, crafts, musical instruments and a dynamic outdoor playground. However, this giant gem of a Hawaiian isle is actually one of the quietest and most sparsely populated, which makes navigating it in a Turo rental car — toddler in her car seat — an absolute breeze.

Having visited Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection , when our daughter was an infant, and again after she became a toddler, I can say honestly that it exceeded expectations both times.

Breckenridge, Colorado

A globally popular ski mountain doesn't necessarily sound like the most typical of toddler holiday destinations, but hear me out. I can personally attest that ages two and three are a fantastic time to start a kid on skis. For one, their lift tickets are free. Also, mountain towns offer plenty of other activities as well.

In Breckenridge last winter, our daughter had an absolute blast in her tiny boots, skis, helmet and mittens. She was an adorable puffy pink figure on the babiest of slopes where other small skiers were learning the ropes, too. We went DIY as she was not yet two, but official lessons start at age three, and there's lots of playtime — and breaks for warming sweet treats — baked in.

Our daughter has never been gifted as many treats, toys and activities as at Shangri-La Singapore , an oasis with 15 acres of flower-filled gardens just minutes away from the high-end shopping and dining street Orchard Road.

Port Orly Beach is a small fishing village with white sandy beaches and cafes that serve you deliciously fresh seafood. You can also enjoy a cocktail or two from the locals and just enjoy the beautiful, peaceful surroundings.

A trip to the fresh water swimming holes, known as the Blue Holes where you can enjoy swimming in the blue water surrounded by nature. There are 3 main blue holes, Nanda, Riri and Matevulu. If you fancy a little more fun most of the blue holes have rope swings where you can spend hours swinging into the water.

If you head to Aore Island, you can enjoy diving, snorkeling, fishing, and kayaking or enjoy a bicycle ride along one of the island’s many tracks.

A baby carrier is best for this strip so leave the stroller at home. Bring along your toddler supplies like nappies, wipes, and any formula.

The Chicago museums are great for visiting with toddlers and babies as well.  All of the museums have nursing rooms for moms and are breastfeeding-friendly. 

If you love the great outdoors, Illinois has several toddler-friendly state parks.  There are three fabulous state parks within 2 hours of Chicago.  

Kankakee State Park is 1 hour south of Chicago; Starved Rock State Park is 1.5 hours southwest of Chicago, and Matthiessen State Park is 1.75 hours southwest of Chicago. 

These parks are great for visiting with toddlers, as most trails are paved and suitable for strollers.  Additionally, Illinois is pretty flat, so none of these parks have steep trails. 

If visiting Starved Rock State Park, stay at the Grand Bear Resort for some R&R and their on-site waterpark. 

In Chicago, it is easy to find toddler supplies such as diapers, wipes, snacks, medicine, and more.  Simply pop into any drug store downtown to find whatever you need. 

Common drug stores in Chicago and Illinois include Target, Walgreens, and CVS.  Stop by Macy’s in downtown Chicago to find clothes for an affordable wardrobe change.

Traveling with a toddler might not always be smooth sailing, but it can be more enjoyable when utilizing these top tips.

There's no sugarcoating it: Traveling with toddlers is a challenge. But there are ways to make it easier, as well as places that cater to – or are naturally convenient for – the kiddie set and their families. Read on for destination recommendations and travel tips from U.S. News editors who frequently travel with toddlers as well as other experts.

The Best Places to Travel With Toddlers

When deciding where to go, keep it simple. "Choose relaxing destinations that don't involve a lot of moving around or heavy itineraries," says Elizabeth Von Tersch, a mom of two toddlers and a senior editor of travel at U.S. News. "If you don't have a long list of places to see or things to check off, you'll be more content with just one or two activities per day." It's also ideal to choose a destination that's reachable via a short road trip, train ride or direct flight – especially if this is your first time traveling with toddlers.

Beach destinations

Beaches with tide pools and/or shallow waters are especially fun for toddlers, plus many beach towns offer vacation rentals with fully equipped kitchens, washing machines and other comforts of home near the sand and surf. Load up the beach wagon with all of your essentials (including plenty of snacks, drinks and a picnic lunch) and spend a few hours on the beach; then head back to your rental for nap time before an evening on the boardwalk.

U.S. News editors agree Isle of Palms, South Carolina, is especially perfect for toddlers. The boardwalk is lined with shops, restaurants and ice cream shops, and it sits close enough to Charleston for easy daytrips into the city. Other editor picks and highly rated options include the Outer Banks in North Carolina with its variety of beaches, vacation rentals and overall laid-back vibe; Seaside, Florida, an idyllic, walkable community; Michigan City, Indiana, where you can stay at the family-friendly Beachwalk Resort, close to Indiana Dunes National Park; and Coronado Beach, California , with plenty of space to spread out, places to eat and nearby accommodations – including the famous Hotel del Coronado .

Lakefront locales

If you have a toddler who doesn't care for the sand, consider a lake and/or mountain destination where you can enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and biking (and maybe some sand-less water fun), as well as vacation rental accommodations. On Lake Champlain in Vermont, you also have the option to stay at a classic summer resort like Basin Harbor or Tyler Place (the latter of which is all-inclusive) and enjoy animal visits and tractor rides at local farms such as Shelburne Farms, a nonprofit educational organization. In Washington state, Lake Chelan offers clean, crystal-clear waters perfect for (supervised) swimming, and in Okoboji, Iowa, you'll find boat rides on Lake Okoboji and carnival-style rides at Arnolds Park Amusement Park.

Small theme parks

While theme parks like Disney World might come to mind, it's unlikely you'll get to a lot of rides with your toddler, who will probably be happier at the hotel pool. Instead, opt for smaller theme parks geared toward young kids. Megan Johnson, a mom and editor at SmarterTravel Media , says her toddlers loved Sesame Place, which has locations near Philadelphia and San Diego . "The rides are short so the lines go fast too," she points out. Another ideal theme park for toddlers is Legoland, with parks in Goshen, New York (an easy weekend getaway from New York City ); Winter Haven, Florida; and Carlsbad, California. You'll also want to consider Peppa Pig Theme Park – also located in Winter Haven – and Story Land in Glen, New Hampshire.

City vacations

City vacations offer a variety of things to do with the option to go at your own pace – and some of them are practically made for young kids. For instance, did you know Indianapolis is home to the largest children's museum in the U.S. , or that Pittsburgh is often called Kidsburgh for its wide variety of attractions for youngsters?

Of course, this is your vacation too, so think about some things you might like to do when planning your city trip. In Rochester, for example, you can combine a trip to The Strong National Museum of Play with a visit to some family-friendly Finger Lakes wineries . On a trip to Denver , you can show the children real dinosaur tracks at Dinosaur Ridge before exploring Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre or one of the Mile High City's famous (and kid-friendly) breweries.

Family visits

Visiting family in another state or country is a great opportunity to experience local attractions and restaurants with loved ones you don't see often. If your relatives are willing to babysit for a few hours, you might even be able to squeeze in a date night or an afternoon at the spa .

All-inclusive resorts

All-inclusive family resorts with pools, water parks , shows and other on-site entertainment can be a lot of fun for toddlers and their families. They also make dining easy, eliminating the stress of meal preparation on vacation, and some even offer free nightly rates for kids . Just keep in mind that toddlers may not be old enough to enjoy the kids clubs, as minimum age requirements vary at each property. You'll also need to get your child a passport (unless you opt for an all-inclusive resort in the U.S. ). Much of the same can be said for cruising with toddlers .

Survival Tips for Traveling With Toddlers

Lower your expectations.

… and then lower them a little more. Naps will be skipped, meltdowns will be had and potty-training setbacks are inevitable. Stay on schedule when you can, but don't feel guilty when you can't.

Book toddler-friendly accommodations.

If you're planning to stay at a vacation rental, Von Tersch recommends looking for one with kids amenities such as a swing set and toys, and/or one that sits near a local park. If you prefer to stay at a hotel , choose one with a pool or special treats for kids, such as in-room games. It's also a good idea to book a family suite with a separate bedroom or two; this way, you don't have to go to bed when your toddler does.

Hide new toys in your carry-on bag.

They don't have to be expensive; in fact, your local dollar or thrift store can be an invaluable resource when preparing to travel with toddlers. Stock up on cheap knick-knacks that you can easily pack and surprise your child with throughout the journey (and that you won't worry about when they inevitably disappear). You might also consider ordering a few inexpensive options on Amazon – Wikki Stix , Melissa & Doug Water Wow! activity pads, Squigz , lift-and-look board books , and packable busy boards like this one are fun, mess-free favorites among families with both toddlers and older children.

Bring the tablet.

While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting daily screen time for young children, "the rules go out the window when traveling," says Dr. Danielle Wiese (reassuringly), a pediatrician for Carmel Pediatrics in Carmel, Indiana. "Do what you need to do to get there – it will all be fine." 

If you're bringing a kids tablet and/or if you'll be on a long flight with seat-back screens, be sure to pack a pair of kids headphones like CozyPhones , which are especially comfortable (and adorable) for little ears.

Pack a "snackle" box.

Most everyone – but especially toddlers – thrives on snacks when traveling. Pack a variety of options, including both nutritional and not-so-nutritional items (because sometimes, only candy will do). "It's okay to give those less healthy snacks while traveling," Wiese says, though she also recommends sneaking in some fiber so your toddler's tummy has some regulation. "Easy to-go snacks with fiber are applesauce pouches, raisins and some bar snacks (check the label)."

When packing snacks, organize them in a "snackle" box to save space and add excitement to the trip. This portable storage case with a handle from Harbor Freight works perfectly, though any small organizational box will do. You can also try a snack spinner like this one by GoBe , which only allows kiddos to access one snack at a time. Bonus: The snackle box is also useful for local outings and daytrips closer to home.

Johnson also recommends packing some larger-portion snacks or meals so you don't have to worry in the event you can only find fast-food stops and want to avoid them, or if you go to a restaurant that doesn't serve anything your toddler will eat.

Prepare for messes.

It's amazing how fast a clean car can reach tornado-level status on a family road trip, or how your toddler's bodily functions seem to synchronize with the exact time of takeoff. Ann Henson , a toddler mom and assistant managing editor of travel at U.S. News, recommends packing an extra outfit for your toddler (and maybe yourself), sanitizing wipes and/or spray, and trash bags, adding that dog waste bags work well.

Don't plan stops.

Your toddler(s) will inevitably plan them for you when they get cranky, need a diaper change or need to use the bathroom. When you stop, be sure to use the bathroom yourself, fuel up the car and do anything else you have to do so you can avoid stopping when your little one takes a snooze.

Bring the essentials, and rent or ship the rest.

Bring the gear that's most important to you, such as the travel stroller and car seat – you can check them at the gate – and be sure to store them in a travel bag when not in use. Not only will the bag protect your gear, but you might be able to store some extra items inside. "I put diapers in the stroller bag, both for extra padding and for the convenience of freeing up suitcase space," says Nicola Wood , a mom and senior editor of travel at U.S. News.

For bulky items like portable cribs , beach wagons and hiking baby carriers, consider a baby gear rental service like BabyQuip or rents4baby , or search for local vendors in your destination. In addition, you may want to consider sending smaller essentials – diapers, wipes and the like – to your destination. Consider TSA Precheck or Global Entry.

Having TSA Precheck means you'll (typically) spend less time at airport security – a godsend when traveling with toddlers. Children younger than 12 can go through the TSA Precheck lane when traveling with a guardian who has it, and are not required to have their own membership. You can apply for either TSA Precheck or Global Entry, which includes TSA Precheck benefits. However, if you're traveling internationally and looking for Global Entry benefits for the entire family, each family member (regardless of age) will need to apply for it. Start special vacation-only traditions.

It's the little things that count – even on vacation. "As kids, my mom would buy a variety pack of miniature boxes of cereal on each vacation for quick (and cheap) breakfasts during our trip. We only ever got them on vacation, and for some reason the novelty of this made them taste way better than the cereal we had every day at home," Von Tersch says. "To this day, when I see those cute little boxes, I still associate them with good memories and carefree trips."

From relaxing escapes with your infant to deep cultural immersions upon college graduation, here are travel ideas for families with children at any stage.

Once a traveler, always a traveler. There are folks who believe a baby doesn't have to change a thing about a couple's lifestyle, and others who subscribe to the exact opposite theory. But all can agree on one thing: Those who loved traveling before expanding their family likely dream of continuing to explore the world, little ones in tow. One of the most exciting parts of having children, after all, is the way they enrich and amplify almost every experience. Then, of course, there's the awe-inspiring discovery that goes along with watching curious youngsters see and try new things, from delicious foods to beautiful cultures.

Knowing which places around the globe are most appropriate for kids as they grow into and out of different phases can be tough to anticipate. And yes, it's more daunting to fly or contend with jet lag at certain ages. It's true, too, that as little ones become big, trips become more expensive. But all the challenges are far outweighed by the collective joy that's possible on a family vacation, especially one tailored to the brood's developmental stage and interests.

Here, with the help of a few travel experts, we break it down by age group, pairing each with a dreamy destination for exposure to the wondrous world and maximum family fun.

Infants (Ages 0-1): A Mexican Beach Resort

You'll hear it from every parent: Travel while your baby is just that — a baby — because it'll never be easier. Once they start walking, all bets are off. True, you're likely sleep deprived, but doesn't that make it the perfect time to hop on a short flight to Mexico for some R&R and vitamin D?

When planning a first vacation with an infant, Indagare CEO and founder Melissa Biggs Bradley says, "You'll want a warm location with a direct flight, a big beach since infants are still too young to enjoy a kids club, and easy access to good medical care in case of an ear infection or anything more serious."

Expect to bring way too much gear, but don't worry — any parent will empathize. A family-friendly resort in a development like the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (for West Coasters) or Rosewood Mayakoba (for East Coasters) is a great bet since they'll happily provide the comforts of home (think: crib, mini fridge for milk, high chair, baby bathtub, or diaper pail), meaning you can focus your packing around sun protection and adorable tropical ensembles for your baby. They're also likely to offer babysitting services, in case you'd like to have dinner one night after 7 p.m. As for the new parent exhaustion, a soft, sandy beach is an idyllic place to catch up on Zs, for all of you. There's a reason sound machines come with a blue noise option — the gentle lapping of waves could lull anyone right to sleep.

Toddlers (Ages 1-4): The Island of Hawai'i

To a toddler, there's excitement to be found everywhere. They're like mini explorers, captivated by virtually every landscape and situation. Young kids who have just discovered the freedom of walking, running, and swimming will find pure magic in the Hawaiian islands. The coral reefs, beautiful beaches , Polynesian culture, soulful storytelling, near-perfect weather, and wildlife such as dolphins, whales, and sea turtles hold plenty of appeal for adults, yes, but also for toddlers.

The island of Hawai'i, specifically, offers a diversity of stunning environments, from stark and surreal lava flows to lush waterfalls, as well as resorts with little to no crowds. Mauna Lani , part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, with its ancient royal fishponds, outrigger canoes, and calm beach, exemplifies the family-forward approach. Their Holoholo Kids Crew offers thoughtful programming (think: crab hunting, Hawaiian language lessons, petroglyph walks, and natural dyeing, stamping, and feather art). And while it's designed for ages five to 12, three and four year olds can also attend with their parents (a great excuse for grown-ups to experience all the fun, too). Uncle Danny, the resort's cultural gatekeeper whose domain is the vibrant "house of knowledge," is wonderful with children.

"Many Hawaii resorts have protected ponds where you can take your toddlers into the ocean," says Biggs Bradley. "You can enjoy whale-watching cruises, and, in their later toddler years, they'll appreciate learning about the wildlife, maybe attend lei-making classes, or just relaxing by the pool or on the beach."

Elementary School (Ages 5-10): Rome, Italy

Once your kids have reached school age, they begin to hear a little more about the world around them. Basic elementary school lessons typically include ancient Rome, the Colosseum , and gladiators, says Biggs Bradley, so a trip to Rome "will further engage them in the touring, since what they've learned in school will be brought to life."

There are countless exciting activities available for kiddos, and even picky eaters will find something they love in the boot-shaped country known for pizza, pasta, and gelato. "Pizza- and gelato-making experiences are a must," says Access Italy CEO Simone Amorico, who adds that kids love making ceramics and mosaics, too. He says other can't-miss activities include, "treasure hunts in the Vatican and the Villa Borghese, where they can also ride a four-wheel bike and stop for picnics."

Meanwhile, the fairytale-like Hotel Eden is an ideal base for Roman excursions, and it's not far from Teatro Verde, a theater for puppet shows and musicals, the Explora Children's Museum, and Bartolucci, a traditional wooden toy shop where you can find Pinocchio. "At this age, a typical family tour can be boring, as they tune out and can't wait to leave," says Scott Dunn USA president John Spence. "We had our kids attend a Roman gladiator school so they could gain hands-on lessons in fighting techniques and reenact life as an ancient gladiator — they loved it."

Tweens (Ages 11-13): A Montana Dude Ranch

Between the ages of 11 and 13, kids, or tweens, will likely want some autonomy, but they also need boundaries. A dude ranch or guest ranch encompassing hundreds of acres of pristine, wide-open space makes for a wonderful compromise.

"When kids are in their early teenage years, there is nothing better than a vacation that combines adventure with something new," says Spence. "Watching our kids step outside of their element — horseback riding on mountainside cliffs or even just hiking in the beautiful Montana nature — is one of the best parts of being a parent."

Visiting a 10-square-mile property like The Ranch at Rock Creek — with a slew of included activities like fly fishing, cross-country mountain biking, photography classes, sapphire mining, and horse roping lessons — is quite a novelty for many families. Most kids, however unique their interests, will be able to find something they are stoked about. The younger ones can also attend Flint's Forest Rangers Kids Club (ages four to 12), which offers pre-booked excursions such as wildlife spotting and treasure hunting. Families can come together in the property's western-style bar for bowling, table tennis, and karaoke, too.

And perhaps the best part about Montana, home to dozens of guest ranches, is that it's gorgeous and fun year-round. It's a winter wonderland worthy of a snow globe and, at The Ranch at Rock Creek, cold-weather options include skiing (downhill and cross-country), sledding, ice skating, hockey, and snowmobiling. Expect smiles 24/7.

Teenagers (Ages 14-17): An African Safari

"It is all about the thrill of experiencing something so different from what they've ever seen before," says Extraordinary Journeys ' founder and CEO Elizabeth Gordon of taking the kids on an African safari.

Biggs Bradley adds, "Safaris are a huge area of passion for me, and I was eager to open my kids' eyes to them when they were young. The sweet spot to take children on their first safari is after 14 because by then you can ensure they will really remember the experience. They'll be able to sit in a vehicle for long periods of time and likely won't be nervous about sleeping in a tent." Plus, many camps also don't allow kids under 12 years old.

A safari is a special experience for a family to encounter together, witnessing an exciting array of animals in their natural habitat — not to mention beautiful traditions and cultures, too. "An amazing guide will teach [the kids] about tracking, get them to think like a detective, and figure out what may have happened in the area by looking at footprints," says Gordon.

As Biggs Bradley says of Kenya, "Cultural exchange is key. The opportunity for kids to meet and interact with Maasai people, for example, can be an incredibly memorable part." Properties like Sirikoi , Basecamp Explorer 's circuit, and Angama Mara provide beautiful immersion along with amazing sightings of the world's rarest species.

Another perk? Since Wi-Fi is often sparse or unavailable, families can unplug from technology and simply enjoy being together out in the bush. For even more adventure, consider adding on gorilla trekking in Rwanda (the pricier option) or Uganda (more affordable), especially if doing a safari in nearby Kenya.

College (Ages 18-21): Queenstown, New Zealand

Once kids have gone off to college, it can take a pretty enticing offer to pull them back into the fold for family vacations. Queenstown, New Zealand, is one such attractive proposition. Known as the "adventure capital of the world," it's the kind of all-season destination that offers a scene for everyone — plus, English is the main language spoken.

The birthplace of bungee jumping is home to countless thrills, from exhilarating jumps ( AJ Hackett Bungy from the Kawarau Bridge is the classic choice) to parasailing on bright blue Lake Wakatipu. "Families will love helicopter flights over the Tasman Glacier and along Milford Sound on a sunny winter day, or careening around the bends of the Shotover Canyon on a jet boat in the summer," says Gordon of this "quintessential playground."

For anyone who's not quite as much an adrenaline junkie, there are many hiking — known there as tramping — trails that reveal jaw-dropping panoramas. "New Zealand is a dream destination for a family who loves nature, landscapes, and, of course, adventure," says Biggs Bradley, adding that skydiving, rafting, caving, and fly fishing are also draws.

In the winter, Queenstown's mountains are home to epic skiing and snowboarding. The town itself is walkable and safe, with plenty of places to enjoy a sundowner, lovely meal, or the nightlife. With the kids becoming adults (and the local drinking age being 18), there's also the option to take a day for wine tasting at some of the island country's top vineyards in the Central Otago region about 45 minutes away by car.

To allow your young adults some freedom, try a couple rooms at the boutique QT Queenstown , which is full of art, quirk, and large windows showcasing the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu.

College Graduates (Age 22 and Up): Japan

By the time they've graduated college, many young adults will be ready to dive, respectfully, into a culture as exquisite as Japan's. "Japan is a country you want to travel to when you know your family will truly be able to appreciate what it has to offer," says Biggs Bradley, pointing out the opportunity for deep cultural immersion in food and drink, museums, temples, and shrines.

In a place where there's a fine art to everything from making tea and arranging flowers to lighting incense, it's best to ensure all parties are prepared to be well-behaved and gracious guests. A more mature — or adventurous — palate is also helpful for fully enjoying all of Japan's culinary treasures. Spence calls it "the perfect place for post-graduates who want new experiences," and Japan certainly excels at providing those.

Tokyo is a dynamic urban center where exploration yields unimaginable exploits. A different energy pervades Kyoto's quieter neighborhoods of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, bamboo forests, and famous geisha districts. ( InsideJapan offers wonderful private tours led by local experts.) "Our kids loved trains, making the bullet train around Japan one of the best parts of the trip," says Spence.

Getting around is indeed a no-brainer — trains and buses are always precisely on time, people are friendly and willing to help despite language barriers, and there are many appealing regions (prefectures) with special attributes, such as places known for sake, hot springs (onsen), and art.

Staying in a traditional ryokan is a must, and the fourth-generation Japanese-owned Hoshinoya portfolio includes several luxury options. One of the most memorable additions to the cities, however, is a couple of days near Mount Fuji, where Hoshinoya Fuji offers spectacular views of the elusive volcano alongside exceptional local cuisine and rugged outdoorsy activities, including a food smoking workshop, canoeing, and e-biking. At the end of the day, there's no better place for a globe-trotting family to relax and share stories than around a bonfire under the stars, with live acoustic music, s'mores, and Japanese whisky.

Its serene and peaceful ambiance ensures you can relax and unwind during your stay.

Road Trip With a 1 Year Old: A Handy Guide

Traveling in the car is a great way to vacation with a one year old! It can be tricky, but I got all the tips and tricks you need!

Plan to Stop every 2 hours, pack a variety of snacks and travel during nap times to make the trip go as smoothly as possible. Plan stops where babies can walk around and get in some exercise. Pack the essentials in arm’s reach to make stops easier. 

When you are traveling with a 1 year old I like to keep a diaper basket under the seat. Keep diapers, wipes, diaper cream and a changing mat in this basket so that you can quickly grab everything for a diaper change. 

Older babies can enjoy some toys on a road trip as well. Pack some books, small toys and snacks in another basket that is in easy reach. 

Stopping every 2-3 hours is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics to help prevent positional asphyxia. This can happen when babies slouch down in their car seats and stop breathing. 

This happens more often in younger babies, but it can happen in older babies if they get themselves in a weird position and cannot get out of it. 

As a general rule, you should have an adult ride next to the baby to monitor their breathing and their comfort. 

Be careful when offering snacks on the road and be sure that you monitor the baby if they are eating to ensure they are not choking. 

Be sure to slow down and enjoy the trip. Traveling with a baby has it’s own pace and it may take some getting used to, but slowing down will make the trip much less stressful. 

Spend an extra night at the hotel, make an extra bathroom stop, slow down and embrace the trip. 

Packing for a 1 Year Old 

When you are packing for your one year old I recommend that you pack 2 extra outfits per 5 days of your trip , and be sure to have a plan if you need to do laundry. 

Eating habits can change on vacation and that can result in some messy outfits. 

Be sure to pack your regular brand of diapers, wipes and diaper rash cream. This can avoid a painful rash or allergic reaction while away from home. 

Choose engaging toys for travel times when your baby is awake and ready to play.

Great Road Trip Toys for a 1 Year Old

A 1 year old may be distracted by some well chosen toys on your road trip. 

These are the best, low mess, solutions that have worked for our family on 10+ hour road trips. 

Small board books are a great toy for the car. We love big sets of small books like the linked set, and classics in small board book form. 

Corduroy , We’re Going On a Bear Hunt , and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? have all been winners with my babies. I often find these at local thrift stores. 

Reading these to babies can be a great distraction on a long stretch of driving. 

When you need a sure fire distraction bubbles can be really special in the car. Choose a bottle that fits in the cupholder to keep the mess down. 

If you have responsible older kids this can also be fun for them to blow bubbles for the baby. 

Magnet toys are great for the car and they stay contained very well!

We enjoy magnet blocks like Magna Tiles . Just 2-3 blocks are really fun for a 1 year old. They also rattle when they are shaken, which is fun for a baby as well. 

Light Up Toys 

If you will be traveling at night, a light up toy can be super engaging. 

Simple toys like a small flashlight, a puck light, or glow sticks can be magical in a dark car. 

I know that my kids love traveling at night because it is such a new experience and the light up toys are just magical even for my 7 year old. 

Tips for a Traveling Alone With a Baby

I recommend that you travel with two adults whenever possible, but I know that sometimes you must travel on your own with a baby. 

I love a good adventure and this is what I have learned by traveling alone with my babies. 

Stop Frequently

You should plan to stop every 2 hours or less. This gives you time to check in on the baby and to be sure that they have what they need. 

This also gives you a chance to feed and change the baby. 

Mirrors that allow you to see your baby can be helpful, or a deadly distraction, consult your pediatrician about installing a mirror. 

Pack snacks and drinks for both of you in case you need to change plans suddenly. 

Be sure to pack any special foods that your baby needs, formula, snacks or medicine should be well stocked. Don’t forget mom’s favorites too, pack substantial snacks and cold drinks in the cooler. 

Having everything you need just feels good and makes you feel more secure. 

If you don’t feel comfortable stopping or your baby is sleeping you can choose to keep rolling and eat out of the cooler. 

I always think of my car like Mary Poppins carpet bag, or Herminone’s purse. Full of everything we could possibly need. Magically prepared. 

Be Sure To Rest

Drowsy driving is really dangerous and traveling alone with kids is exhausting. 

Be sure you are getting enough sleep to safely drive. Caffeine can help for a short time, but if you find yourself getting tired, plan to stop. 

The biggest tip I have for you is to go slowly. Do one thing at a time and try to be intentional. 

For example, be sure to put the keys in your pocket before leaving the car to unbuckle the baby, be sure to change diapers at each stop and double check buckles before you start driving. 

There are so many little things to do and check it is easy to forget and become overwhelmed. 

Rushing can make things much more stressful. 

When I travel with my husband he loves to rush and do things quickly, but I have to go slow or we will regret it later. 

Don’t be embarrassed by your pace if you are with a group of kid free companions. Focus on mindfulness and be present in each task.

Flying With a Baby Under 1 Year Old

My kids have been on countless planes, trains, and automobiles and have stayed in hotels, Airbnbs, and even an RV. They’re now 3 and 5 years old, carrying their own backpacks and attempting to pull their own carry-ons, but this wasn’t always the case.

If you’re new to traveling with small children, it might seem overwhelming or outright impossible. Sure, there’s a lot of stuff to pack and juggling to do while taking care of a tiny human, yourself, and all of your things. But it’s probably simpler than you think, especially if you follow some of the tips outlined below .

When kids are especially small — think a few months old to about a year old — it’s downright easy to travel with them. The plane provides white noise and lulls them almost straight to sleep as soon as you’re in the air, barring any pressure change discomfort, of course. They aren’t moving too much, nor are they requesting (demanding) to get out of your arms or the seat and walk the plane.

You can wear your tiny human on your chest or back and they pretty much go wherever you take them without protest. Their schedule and eating habits are predictable and they’ve yet to have their first meltdown.

The early days are almost blissful.

And then they turn 1.

The older your child gets, the more curious they become . The 1-year-old stage is a fun time because they’re walking, or just on the cusp of it, suggesting that they’re ready for more independence, have a sense of humor, and are generally well-tempered. This is a sweet spot right before their inability to communicate leads to temper tantrums and frustration.

Hot Tip: The biggest difference between flying with a 1-year-old and a younger child is how alert they will be.

Your 1-year-old might want to stand in your lap, or in the seat, and wave at, smile at, and talk to other passengers. For more active toddlers, you may have to walk around the cabin with them . And if they’re walking, they’ll likely want to walk on the ground themselves.

They’re hopefully eating solid foods so you’ll have to remember to pack food that you know they’ll like. Don’t rely on getting something at the airport or even the food provided on the plane. They’re also larger, so that tiny, inaccessible plane bathroom won’t be fun for either of you when it comes time to change a diaper at 30,000 feet.

But the biggest difference of all might be whether or not you buy your ever-growing infant their own seat.

Should You Buy a Seat for Your Toddler?

When my kids were young enough for it, I was of the mind that as long as my kids could fly for free, we wouldn’t buy them a seat. Plus, they’re only small for so long and I always loved holding onto them when they slept. Add to that the increasing costs of airline tickets, both in cash and miles, and I’m glad that we were able to save the money with a lap infant when we could.

To make having a lap infant easier, either my husband or I would wear the baby in an Ergobaby carrier when they slept so that we had full use of our arms . We could even sleep ourselves without fearing that the baby would fall out of our arms.

I know a lot of parents who prefer for each member of their family to have their own seat, mostly for the sake of space. But in addition to that, some children just don’t sleep well being held — not to mention the adult holding them might be pretty uncomfortable, too.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recommends that children fly in a child restraint system (CRS) , which is essentially a car seat . There are specific requirements for CRS devices, so be sure and check out the website before you fly to make sure you’ve got the right type.

You’ll get a baggage allowance for your 1-year-old when you purchase a seat no matter how old they are. This would allow you to pack more freely instead of packing your child’s items together with the items in your carry-on … something I’ve done many times.

If you’re lucky, you’ll be seated in a row that has an empty seat next to you and your child can sit there free of charge when the “Fasten Seat Belt” sign is off.

Baby bassinets are detachable bassinets available on some planes in the bulkhead seat. These bassinets generally have age, weight, and/or height restrictions for use, and with a 1-year-old, your options to use a bassinet may be getting limited .

If you’re inclined to use a bassinet for your baby — particularly on a long-haul flight where you want to ensure the best rest possible — you’ll need to call the airline right after making your reservation to reserve your seat and bassinet.

The debate about whether or not kids and babies should be in premium cabins is one we won’t settle here. Still, parents traveling with young children may want to know some of the pros and cons of flying business class with a baby .

In business class, you’re guaranteed to get more legroom and larger seats. When traveling with a lap infant especially, it never hurts to have as much room as possible. In economy, you cannot sit in the exit row where you’d normally expect to have the most room in the back of the plane. That means that you’ll be jammed in a row, potentially with strangers.

With fewer passengers to take care of in business class, the flight attendants should have more time to help you when you need assistance. For example, you may need water to make a bottle or you forgot your child’s juice. In business class, you can expect to be taken care of a little more often.

Unfortunately, just by the sheer volume of folks in the economy compared to the number of attendants, you won’t receive the same service.

In premium cabins, depending on the airline, you may be able to reserve an infant or child meal in advance to be served during your flight. If flying domestic economy, you won’t have this option.

And lastly, flying in business could be cost-prohibitive to many. Even with points, business class seats often cost a significant amount more than economy class tickets. It’s easy to feel that the pros listed above don’t outweigh the dollar amount you’ll have to pay for those conveniences.

International airlines shine when it comes to their meal services (even in economy). As such, you can expect to be able to order a kids’ meal in advance of your flight or when you get on board.

The makeup of the meals and offerings varies depending on the airline, of course. Some airlines, usually depending on the length of the flight, will offer hot meals like pasta and even hamburgers. Others might only offer a kids’ snack box.

Whether or not these amenities are included in the price of your ticket depends on the airline as well. For example, United brought back kids’ meals that can be ordered at least 24 hours before your flight for flights over 2,000 miles and where a complimentary meal will be served.

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), breast milk , formula, and toddler drinks are considered medically necessary. Breast milk, formula, toddler drinks, and baby/toddler food (including puree pouches) can exceed 3.4 ounces and do not need to fit in quart-size bags.

You are recommended to let the TSA agent know that you’re traveling with these items at the beginning of the screening and to take it out of your carry-on.  It is also recommended that these items travel in clear containers for the sake of expediting the screening process.

Though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) categorizes breast pumps as a medical device and as such should be allowed in addition to your carry-on and personal item, this depends on the airline. It’s a good idea to call the airline you’ll be flying with before you check in for your flight to ensure that you can bring your breast pump onboard.

Helpful Travel Accessories

As your children get older, they’ll likely want to help carry their backpacks or pull their own luggage . Eventually, you won’t need to carry or push them in a stroller everywhere because they’ll want to walk on their own, too. In the meantime, however, when traveling with a 1-year-old, all of that still falls on you. Luckily, there are plenty of travel gadgets and accessories to help make it easier.

Umbrella strollers are lightweight, foldable strollers for babies old enough to hold their heads up. An infant stroller most likely works together with your car seat, which can be bulky and hard to maneuver through the airport. If your child is big enough, an umbrella stroller is the way to go.

Whether or not you go with the convenience of an umbrella stroller or elect for your larger stroller, you can gate-check your stroller and keep it with you right up until you board the plane. Your stroller will either be waiting for you at the gate when you land or will have made its way to the baggage carousel.

Car seat requirements are not the same for cars and airplanes, and to use your car seat on the plane the car seat must be FAA-approved .

It’s important to note that the EU has different requirements for car seats than the U.S., so you’ll want to be aware of this if that’s where you’re traveling. One major difference between EU and U.S. car seats is that EU-approved car seats do not have chest clips. EU regulation states that a child must be able to be removed from the seat in a single motion.

I think that baby backpacks are better for travel than baby purses (one-shoulder baby bags) for a few reasons.

First, you have a full range of motion when wearing a backpack with weight evenly distributed through your back instead of on one shoulder.

Second, a backpack tends to have more pockets for all the things you’ll be carrying for your baby. It doesn’t hurt that it’s probably easier to convince your partner to share the responsibility of carrying a backpack vs. a purse.

Speaking of all the things you’ll be carrying, here are a few items that should make traveling with a 1-year-old a little easier:

• Bottles, bottle liners, tops
• Extra clothes for you and baby
• Extra socks (and maybe shoes)
• Foldable changing pad for changes in public restrooms
• Formula dispenser
• Hand sanitizer
• Plastic bags for dirty clothes, diapers, etc.
• Spill-proof and independent snack dispenser
• Spill-proof sippy cup

There seems to be an ongoing debate on social media about babies in premium cabins (more on that a little later) and whether or not they should be allowed in lounges.

Lounges don’t typically have age restrictions (kids under 2 are even generally free!), though most don’t have amenities geared toward children. But what you get at a lounge is more space to spread out, with time away from the gate to relax and gather yourself before you fly.

Centurion Lounges , however, do a great job of welcoming and catering to young travelers with family rooms decked out with toys, games, TVs, and kid-size furniture. But even without that family-specific amenities, lounges are a great place to chill out before or after a flight with your baby.

At the lounge, you can also get warm water for formula, warm-up milk and kids’ food, and grab some fruit or other snacks for later.

Tips for Flying With a 1-Year-Old

Whether or not you choose to purchase a seat for your 1-year-old, we have some tips for making flying easier.

I used to think people were exaggerating when they said to bring more snacks than you think you need. But I underestimated just how important a well-timed handful of Cheerios would be.

It’s not so much that your child will be hungry, but that snacking tends to quell a fussy toddler. I cannot explain it any further than that.

Pack the snacks you know they love and maybe even a few surprises. There’s an endless list of snacks you could bring. Fruit, Cheerios, Goldfish, pureed food packs … anything that your child can safely consume will work.

Don’t forget that TSA allows water and food for toddlers in reasonable quantities above the standard 3.4 ounces allowed for all passengers. A standard sippy cup is probably enough to get you through your whole travel day.

This is one of my favorite tips, but I think whether or not a flight is timed well will depend on your child .

For some toddlers, the sound of the airplane in flight works like white noise and helps them sleep. But as they get older and are more alert for longer periods of time, the excitement of a new adventure might energize them enough to try and stay awake for longer than you expect.

In this case, scheduling a flight around nap time won’t matter. But for a first flight with a 1-year-old, it’s worth a try. If you find that your child didn’t stick to the schedule, you won’t have to worry about it next time. We live and we learn.

For long-haul flights, I recommend scheduling a red-eye flight to your destination and skipping the last nap before the flight . The reason for this is that the cabin is dimmed along with the white noise of the plane. I’ve never met a traveling child that could resist the urge to fall asleep under those conditions. Hopefully, they’ll be tired enough to sleep through the entire flight.

At 1 year old, your toddler will likely be awake for at least part of your flight, so you’ll want to have something to occupy them. Tablets are an easy go-to, but understandably, some parents won’t want to introduce screen time at this age, or at all. But if you do decide to go with a tablet loaded with movies, TV shows, or games, be sure and bring along child-safe and cordless Bluetooth headphones . Child-safe headphones should remain at lower decibels to preserve their tiny eardrums.

Avoid toys that make any type of noise so as not to disturb other passengers on your flight.

Hot Tip: Keep in mind that at a year old, your child may not be able to stay engaged by 1 toy or activity for very long, so it’s a good idea to have several options.

Luckily, there are a lot of other activities that are appropriate for this age. Here are a few of my favorite ways to entertain a 1-year-old on a flight:

• Window Clings : Your toddler can stick these on the window themselves, pull them off, and repeat to their heart’s content. Another alternative is circle stickers, like what you’d find at a garage sale. Really, any sticker will work, just test out how easy they are for tiny fingers to peel off.
• Flash Cards : Even if your toddler isn’t talking yet, flash cards can be a great way to practice learning their shapes and colors. Animals and objects flash cards are also a great way to increase your child’s vocabulary.
• Books : Bring along your toddler’s favorite picture book. Pop-up books are always a hit as well. If you can, bring a book that’s age-appropriate and talks about where you’re going, what you’ll be doing, or flying on a plane.
• Play-Doh : Play-Doh is a tactile activity that lets your toddler use their hands. You can even bring plastic cookie cutters to make different shapes out of them. Clay, an alternative to Play-Doh, is a little more difficult to mold but also a worthy activity for a 1-year-old and even helps to strengthen their grip.
• Coloring Books : Again, coloring books are something that your child can do with their hands. Get the jumbo crayons that are easier to hold and choose a coloring book that has characters they recognize. You can color, too! This is a great activity to do together.
• Water Wow! Books : Water Wow! books by Melissa and Doug are awesome and were an instant hit for my kids. You fill the paintbrush with some water and let your toddler “paint” the pages of the cardboard book. There are several designs to choose from, including construction, numbers, alphabet, and animals. The best part about these is that when they dry, the color disappears so you can use them over and over again.

In addition to the activities above, be sure to include items that are brand new to your child . In fact, all of the items listed could be brand new and you could gift wrap them . It’s the novelty of the surprise that gets them excited and wanting to play with whatever the new toy is. Who doesn’t love unwrapping a gift?

I wish that I could tell you that packing gets easier as your kids get older, but I can’t say that.

Yes, you can probably leave their 10 favorite blankets, nappies, and toys at home, but you’ll still need to pack a considerable number of items when you’re away from home. For example, I always packed 2 outfits per day that we would be away, plus a couple of extra. I didn’t plan to change my child’s clothes more than once per day, but we all know that stuff happens .

I would also bring an extra top for myself on travel days in case that stuff happened on me.

Your 1-year-old likely has at least 1 pair of shoes and might need a coat (and sweaters depending on the weather at your destination), gloves, and beanies. Clothes only get bigger along with your child and consequently take up more room in your luggage.

Packing cubes have been a dream for both packing compactly as well as organizing my family’s bags. We each have our own set of cubes in different colors and I roll whole outfits together to save time when we’re getting dressed in the morning .

Rolling outfits works best for the kids’ clothes since my and my husband’s clothes are too big to roll together like this. This trick also helps me avoid over- or underpacking because I always know what’s meant to go with what.

Once we arrive at our accommodations, I leave the clothes in the packing cubes and just put them into the dresser drawers. Packing cubes have immensely simplified the way I organize and pack for my family.

I wish I had a dollar for everything that didn’t go according to plan since I started to travel with my family.

Flight delays and cancellations , lost items, cranky kids, and more, will inevitably happen to you. One of my children almost always catches a cold 2 weeks before a long-haul flight. We even ended up in a clinic in Amsterdam on our first family trip to Europe and returned home with ear infections (yes, the whole family).

When you go with the flow of each day, it allows you to take each inconvenience in stride instead of letting it ruin or make you regret your whole trip. Traveling with children requires patience and grace with them as well as yourself, especially when it comes to how you plan your days.

You can’t pack each day with museum visits, tours, and other activities when traveling with small children. They simply don’t have the stamina to keep up and will let you know when they’ve had enough.

Schedule your activities around their nap times to maximize your experience together and to better ensure a good mood from your little one.

We can only plan so much and the rest is out of our control. Temper your expectations and you’ll be able to enjoy your vacation with your 1-year-old.

Traveling with a 1-year-old is different than traveling with a younger baby, but not always in a bad way. It’s true that traveling with babies younger than a year old is easier because they sleep more often, are easier to transport, and are overall more amenable to most situations. But traveling with an older toddler can also be more fun for you.

If you plan accordingly — while saving room for things you can’t control — and follow at least some of the tips outlined above, I trust that you’ll have a great travel experience when flying with a 1-year-old.

How do you keep a 1-year-old calm on a plane.

If your child is particularly anxious or energetic at any point during the flight, give them their favorite toy that usually calms them down. A pacifier or a bottle is great during takeoff and landing, especially for helping with inner ear pressure. Their favorite stuffed animals, blanket, or book are additional comfort items you could try.

What can you do if your baby cries on a plane?

You know your child best and what usually calms them down, so start with what you know.

Flying with a 1 year old is one of the most challenging aspects of family travel. If you are looking for top tips and advice then you’ve come to the right place. As a full time travel family we have flown with a 1 year old both short and long haul flights. We are super excited to share these top tips, hacks and secrets with you.

Flying with a one-year-old does present some unique and unexpected challenges. In this article we will help you get to grips with some of the challenges and prepare as well as possible.

If you are reading this article you are already doing the first thing right. You’re taking time to plan and prepare for flying with a 1 year-old.  Being fully prepared for your flight can reduce anxiety and help you and your baby have a smooth flight.

Flying with a 1 year old – unique challenges

Why have we done an article just for flying with a 1 year old? Because it’s hard! Flying with a 1 year old is probably one of the most challenging ages to fly. Not trying to put you off. Just help you understand some of the challenges and get prepared. With a 1 year old you will need to consider more toys and activities. You will also need to consider a range of snacks and drinks for a 1 year old baby. Another challenge is that your 1 year old will be more aware of their environment and therefore can be harder to settle. 

What are your seating options flying with a 1 year old?

Bassinet seats 

If you’re on a long haul flight your airline may have special bassinet seats. A bassinet is an airplane cot for a baby. The airline staff should help you set the bassinet up, and this is a great place for your baby to sit, play, rest and sleep during the flight. Bassinet seats are sometimes available for FREE on request on a first come first served basis. 

Bassinet restrictions

It is worth being aware that some airlines may have weight, size or age restrictions for bassinets. It is normally required that your baby can comfortably fit in the bassinet and normally no more than 10kg – 15kg. Check your airline’s specific policy. Most small 1 year olds should be able to use a bassinet on a flight. Your baby will not be able to use a bassinet at take off, landing and when the seatbelt sign is on. 

What about car seats ?

It is also possible to book an additional seat for your infant. Normally, when you add an infant to your booking they will not be assigned a seat. It is normally expected that your baby will sit on your lap throughout the flight with an infant lap belt. However, it is possible to book an additional seat for your infant. This will normally cost a similar price to an adult seat. If you book an additional seat for your 1 year old you can then use an approved car seat. Traveling with a car seat may be awkward at times but it can be very helpful at your destination.

Before you fly with a 1 year-old, take time to help them connect with the experience.  Babies are very good at picking up on our emotions and reflecting them. If you are positive and excited about the flight your baby will perceive and reflect these emotions. Introduce toys and books that have an airplane theme. Talk to them about the flight and about your trip. Try to find ways to make the experience unique and special for them. The flight is also a good opportunity to introduce an exciting new toy or book and make the experience feel special for them. This is a particularly helpful tip to create a good long-term mindset in your child. 

2 Get things organized early

If you are flying with a 1 year old, try to get organized nice and early. Get things booked as early as possible. Generally flights are cheaper if you book them early. Book your hotel early too – on Agoda and Booking.com you can often get great FREE cancellation policies. If you need to get a passport for your infant this can take several months. Applying for an e-visa (where relevant) often takes a few weeks. Things like travel vaccination can take a while to organize because they rely on appointments and immunity may take a few weeks to kick in. Getting organized early is one of the most important things if you are flying with a 1 year old.

3 Book a great place to rest 

Finding a good hotel To rest after your flight is very important. You will all need to rest and recover from the flight and adjust to the new time zone. Try to get a quiet location (or sound proof room), good black out blinds, air conditioning and baby friendly facilities (e.g. fridge, cot, bath etc…)

TOP TIP: Once you know where you are going, get your hotel booked early. One of the great things about using Agoda and booking.com is that you can often find places with very good free cancellation policies. You need to check this when you book.  Agoda and booking.com often have cancellation policies that allow you to cancel for FREE for any reason until close to your check in date. So if you don’t have time to look for the best hotel, just get something good booked early and then look more carefully when you have more time. 

4 Find a flight at a good time

If possible try to find a flight that works well with your baby’s routines. Of course you may not be able to choose the time of your flight, however it is worth considering flight times and layovers when you are booking tickets. It can be good if you can find a flight that departs a couple of hours before your 1 year old is due to nap. Their nap can be a nice way to break up the flight. Another good time to fly is a few hours before your baby’s normal bedtime. Also consider layover times and locations. The best layovers are either relatively short or very long. 1-2 hours is ideal so you have time to get to your connecting flight. Alternatively, 12 hours or more can actually work very well. With a 12 hour layover you may be able to leave the airport and check in to some accommodation to get some rest. You may also have time to see some attractions in your layover country. Also flights with a long layover tend to be cheaper than flights with shorter layovers.

TOP TIP: If you have a long layover check whether your bags go all the way to the destination. If so pack for your layover (clothes and toiletries)

5 Request a bassinet early

Okay this is one of the most important tips for flying with a 1 year old. We mentioned that on some flights you can get special bassinet seats for an infant. However these are generally available on a first-come first-serve basis.  Therefore, if you are on a long-haul flight with a one-year-old we recommend turning up as early as possible to request a bassinet seat. In some cases, a bassinet seat may be automatically assigned to you. However we do not recommend relying on this. 

6 Use the space under the seats 

Airlines normally allow you to put small bags underneath the seat in front of you or underneath your own seat. The only exception is if you’re on an emergency exit row – BUT this won’t happen when you are flying with a 1 year old (infants are not allowed on this row). When you are flying with a 1 year old you need to be able to access things quickly. If all your baby stuff is in the overhead storage it can be really awkward to get things. Pack your special baby carry on in a small flexible bag that can fit under an airplane seat. 

7 Pack more than you need

This feels more like a tip for life! Pack plenty – more than you think you need. Before your flight you will need to work out how much you need. Consider nappies, wet wipes, snacks and milk. Remember you also need to consider journey time to and from the airport, flight times, layover times AND potential delays. If you are stuck in the airport it may be tricky to find extra nappies and milk in the airport. So remember to pack more than you need.

8 Bring some ziplock bags

Pack ziplock bags or small plastic bags. These can be used for so many things. For example if your baby drops their dummy on the ground you can stick it in a ziplock bag and pop it in your bags. Or when clothing is inevitably covered in drinks and bodily fluid – stuff them in a ziplock pack and pack them away to clean later. 

9 Bring some sensory toys

Pack some small compact toys for your baby. Flying with a 1 year old may be a great time to introduce a new toy. Find things that are sensory, multi-purpose and stimulating. Bring along a few familiar toys and books. Consider toys that can be used for simple games like blocks, stacking cups and toys with moving parts and magnets. On the flight PACE yourself and your baby. Mix up activities. Keep some of your higher impact activities for later in the flight when everyone is more tired and worn out. 

10 Pre-prep some bottles

Before the flight, pre-prepare some milk bottles. If the milk bottle is clean, dry and sterilized you can add the correct amount of formula powder to the bottle in advance. Later all you need to do is add some warm water and give it a shake. Alternatively, portion up some formula in small plastic bags. You can then make up the bottle on the flight. Almost all airlines will be willing to provide water for formula bottles. If they only have boiling water available, just add a little clean cold water first (e.g. from a water bottle). 

11 Bring a baby milk bottle through security

Security checks usually have 100ml restriction on fluids. However, parents traveling with an infant should be allowed to take a baby drink through security. You will probably need to pop it in a plastic bag for security and they may also want to check it. But it is useful to have an extra drink for your baby. 

12 Request and infant meal

If you book a flight with a 1 year old you should automatically be assigned an infant meal (assuming there is a meal service on your flight). However, this is definitely worth checking. We recommend contacting the airline in advance to check that your child will be given an infant meal – especially if your infant has special dietary requirements. You may also want to bring along some of your baby’s normal food. 

13 Bring plenty of snacks

As every parent knows, snacks are essential to your baby’s happiness and a parent’s sanity. Airplanes normally offer snacks but these can be odd, sporadic and unreliable. See the airplane snacks as an additional bonus. Snacks with complex carbs will help fill your baby’s tum tum and hopefully make them more sleepy. Baby pouches can also provide a healthy and comforting energy hit for your baby. AND don’t forget to bring along a treat or two for yourself. You deserve it if you’re flying with a 1 year old. 

14 Get some baby ear muffs

Get hold of some special baby aeroplane ear muffs (yes – these really are a thing!). These earmuffs are designed to protect your baby’s ears from the loud noise of the airplane. If your 1 year old is comfortable wearing ear muffs they should help protect their ears and they may also help your baby sleep better on the airplane. Get your baby used to the earmuffs before the flight. At first wait till your baby is asleep before you put them on your baby so they get used to them. Eventually you may be able to put them on before your baby is asleep because they will be used to wearing them. 

15 Talk to people sitting near you 

When you get on the airplane, talk to the people sitting near you. If you’re flying with a 1 year old it is natural to feel anxious about the other passengers sitting near you. A short conversation is a great way to humanize you to the people around you. Showing that you are aware of other people’s experience and peace will encourage them to be more sympathetic and understanding. 

16 Prevent baby ear pain

The change in cabin pressure can be very painful for a baby’s ears. The best way to reduce ear pain is for your 1 year old to suck something. This could be a dummy. It could be feeding from a milk bottle. Or even breastfeeding. You baby will need to sit on your lap in a lap belt at take off and landing. If this is loosened it is possible to breastfeed a baby. 

17 Get a travel changing mat

Consider purchasing a travel changing mat. Baby travel changing mats for compact, small and provide a hygienic surface for carrying out nappy changes anyway. A good travel changing mat may also have additional pockets and pouches for things like hand sanitizer, baby wipes and nappies. You can put your own baby travel changing mat on top of baby changing tables in toilets for comfort and hygiene. Most airplanes have small baby changing tables in some of the toilets.

18 Use your all of your baggage allowance

Your baggage allowance will depend on the airline you’re flying with a ticket. You can generally find out your baggage allowance when you purchase your ticket. A good free allowance should be at least 20kg check in. Flying with a 1 year old you should be given some free additional allowance. Many good airlines will let you bring a pram or baby carrier for FREE. You should also be allowed an additional carry on bag for your baby. 

19 Pad out your bags with nappies

If you’re flying with a 1 year old make sure you bring mountains of nappies with you. In many countries you can buy nappies but they may be expensive, hard to find and not your preferred brand. Nappies are a great way to pad out your bags. Filling your bag with lots of nappies will not add much weight but will provide protection to your belongings. As you use the nappies on your trip the extra space in your bags can be filled with gifts and goodies. 

20 Bring a change of clothes

When you are packing your carry on, remember to pack a change of clothes for your baby and for yourself. When you are flying with a 1 year old it is only a matter of time before you will be covered in crumbs, spillages and bodily fluids. Having some clean clothes can really help you feel human again. 

21 Pack a small blanket

You may be given a blanket on a long haul flight but this is not guaranteed. Bring along a small comfortable blanket for you and or your one year old. This can be a familiar comfort to your baby and you can also use it in the airport during layovers or waiting time. A small blanket shouldn’t add too much extra size and weight to your carry on luggage. 

22 Bring creams and medications

You should be allowed to bring creams and meds in your carry-on luggage (as long as fluids don’t exceed 100ml). Make sure creams and medicines are in labeled containers and wrapped in plastic bags for security. Be aware that a long flight can exacerbate nappy rash. So even if your baby is not normally prone to red cheeks – it is probably worth having a good cream. 

23 Try to keep some normal routines

Stay as close as possible to your baby’s normal routines. This should help your 1 year old feel settled and increase their chances of getting some sleep. Consider small familiar comforts like their normal night time clothing, giving them a bottle of warm milk at bedtime or bedtime stories that you may read to your baby at bedtime.

24 Bring a pram through the airport

If you’re traveling with a pram, take it through the airport all the way to the boarding gate. Having your 1 year old in a pram is really helpful when you need your hands-free. When you get to the gate the airport staff should take your pram and store it on the aircraft so that it is available to you when you arrive at your destination. 

TOP TIP If you are not planning to travel with a pram, there are some other great options for you. Consider a sling. There are plenty of small, light, travel friendly sling options. Alternatively, many airlines will also let you switch out for a baby carrier backpack (FREE with an infant). This is a backpack with a baby seat built in. You can also stuff a baby carrier with some extra things like nappies, clothes or toys. 

25 Use a special assistance lanes in the airport

Most airports around the world have special assistance lanes. You can normally find special assistance lanes at immigration checkpoints, security checkpoints and also when you are boarding the aircraft. Make yourself known to staff and ask for help if you need it. This can save valuable time and reduce waiting time in queues. 

26 Team work is dream work

If you are flying with another adult, find ways to team up. Take shifts and switch out to give each other rest. When you are at stress points (e.g. security) try to divide tasks up. One person looking after your baby whilst the other focuses on bags. If you are not flying with another adult – then seriously respect to you. Bringing the whole family would be too much for the one-year-old to handle.

I’d like to bring our older child, who is close with the graduating aunt.

My wife doesn’t support the older child going with me because she wants to be there for that child’s first airplane flight.

She acknowledges that this is a selfish desire.

Should we go as a family, despite the headaches that will come from flying with a baby, or should I go solo?

DEAR HARRIED: I have to admit that as someone who has flown – a lot – with my daughter when she was a baby and a toddler, and subsequently with many other children of varying ages, I don’t see flying with a three-year-old as being the important and unmissable milestone your wife seems to perceive it to be.

(I still have flashbacks of running from one end of the Dallas airport to the other with my daughter, repeatedly dropping our carry-on luggage and assorted backpacks as we went.)

If the trip to your sister’s graduation is a direct flight of three hours or less, I would take the whole gang. If the trip requires a complicated connection, I would suggest you go solo.

100-Year-Old Woman Mistakenly Identified as Unaccompanied Minor on Flights Due to Glitch with Birth Year, 1923

"I’m going through my second childhood," jokes the centenarian in an Instagram video

At 100 years old, Mildred Kirschenbaum still enjoys traveling — but since reaching her milestone birthday last August, she’s had an unusual experience flying.

The centenarian, who once owned a travel agency in New York and is still a registered agent,  says she now shows up as an “unescorted minor” due to a glitch in the airlines’ computer systems.

“The code is two digits for the month, two digits for the day, and two digits for the year. I was born in 1923. So I put in 23,” Mildred explains in a video posted on the Instagram account of her daughter, Gayle.

“Soon as I check in, I’m an unescorted minor,” she continues. “The supervisor has to come. And they have to see me right through security. No one seems to know how to correct it.”

Mildred, who’s previously gone viral on social media for sharing advice on life and longevity, adds with her trademark humor, “I’m going through my second childhood.”

While the birth year error requires extra time to sort out at the airport before boarding, she tries not to stress too much over it.

“I allow myself a half hour at the counter,” she tells PEOPLE. “I'm not going to get myself worked up with it.”

The Florida resident shared the video ahead of a May trip to New York, where Gayle lives. But she’s taken multiple flights since turning 100, including traveling to London in September for a transatlantic cruise. And a quick jaunt to New York for an appearance on Sherri, hosted by Sherri Shepherd , just last week.

While the mother-daughter duo often fly Delta, they say the problem isn’t limited to one airline — nor was it caused by a booking mistake on Mildred's part.

“I was busy blaming her, saying, ‘Let me see what you did. You probably put it in incorrectly,’” Gayle tells PEOPLE. 

However, Gayle then called a travel agency her mom is connected to and was told, “That's how it is. It's two digits in the system." 

She adds that it now happens “every time" Mildred flies, no matter how they book the flight.

Delta confirmed to PEOPLE that because of how several legacy, industry-wide back-end booking and ticketing systems are built, the fields for customers' birth years only have the capacity for two digits instead of four.

"While it’s clear this customer is young at heart, she’ll simply have to check in with a friendly Delta agent at the airport to get her boarding pass," a representative for the airline told PEOPLE in a statement. "We appreciate her understanding and we’d love to hear her points on longevity and why she likes to travel as Delta marks our own 100th birthday next year.”

Gayle says she thinks the video she posted of her mom "has woken up the industry,” noting, “I'm hearing from people in the aviation IT area saying, ‘We're working on this.’”

Gayle has also heard from other relatives of centenarians who’ve had similar experiences.

“This happened to my mom too,” one commenter, who said her own mother was born in 1913, wrote on Gayle’s Instagram post.

Gayle says her social media followers also appreciated her mom’s playful take on the frustrating situation.

“They all love her attitude,” she says. “She makes light of everything.”

Gayle describes Mildred — with whom she recently collaborated on a book, Mildred's Mindset: Wisdom from a Woman Centenarian — as “incredibly resilient and fearless” and “absolutely not her age.”

“Travel is in our blood, I have to tell you,” says Gayle, a photographer, writer and filmmaker, who made the 2015 documentary Look at Us Now, Mother! “We have had great adventures all over the world.”

“When you don't have this fear, you get to enjoy a lot of things in life and have a lot of adventures,” she adds.

The appearance of the 17-year cicadas this year will mark the fourth emergence of the red-eyed, orange-veined creatures in my lifetime — thus, my fourth cicada birthday.

While much of the focus is typically on the insects’ “deafening din” as we used to call it, I’ve always been most intrigued by their timetable — that internal clock that puts 17 years between each brood.

They mate, lay their eggs in the trees, and the hatched larvae tumble to the ground and bury themselves in the dirt, where they sit for 17 years until they rise in the next blaze of noisy, surreal, magical glory.

Life goes on between broods. Presidents come and go. Wars are won or lost. Pandemics rage and dwindle. Hearts are stirred and broken. Babies are born and grow into teenagers.

The cicadas are oblivious to all that.

We, of course, are not.

I’ve always felt a special tie to the 17-year cicadas. They put me on the front page of the Sun-Times.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. That was on my second cicada birthday.

My first cicada birthday was in 1973. Richard Nixon was in the White House, Richard J. Daley was in City Hall, and I was heading toward high school.

The world was brand-new to those cicadas, but I was a sophisticated adolescent. I’d already enjoyed my first kiss — and heartbreak — and graduated from grade school.

That summer, our family went to a cookout in the forest preserves, and we couldn’t escape the cicadas’ drone from the trees. We didn’t hear much of that noise around our house. A couple of summers before that, my dad had cut down most of the trees around our two-flat in West Lawn, so there was nowhere for the cicadas to perch. But honestly, the buzz of that chainsaw echoes in my memory much louder than the cicadas of ’73.

Riding cicada wings to Page 1, and beyond

By my second cicada birthday in 1990, high school was a distant memory. So was Nixon. George Bush was in the White House. (We didn’t call him George H.W. Bush yet.) Richard M. Daley was now in City Hall. (We did need the middle initial for him.)

As for me, I’d rebounded wonderfully from that 8th grade heartbreak. I’d already found the love my life, and we’d bought a home the year before for the two of us and my stepson. I’d been at the Sun-Times for a dozen years and had scored a reporting internship at the paper that year.

They made me “the cicada reporter” that summer of ‘90. We set up a “Cicada Hotline,” an old answering machine hooked up to a phone in a corner of the newspaper’s morgue. I remember interviewing a grandmother who’d stashed cicadas in her freezer back in ’73 to show her grandkids in ’90.

I rode those cicada wings right onto the front page, earning my first solo Page 1 byline when they finally made their debut.

“They’re heeere ,” I wrote on the June 2 front page.

By my third cicada birthday in 2007, George W. Bush was in the White House. Richard M. Daley was still in City Hall. OK, maybe some things don’t change all that much between cicada broods.

But lots had changed for me. My stepson had married. My wife and I were grandparents, twice over. We’d also added a beagle named Boo to our little brood. At the Sun-Times, I had moved up from cicada reporter to political reporter and soon would be promoted to political editor.

My strongest cicada memory from that year is listening to their chorus in the trees outside a restaurant in the near western suburbs. We had gone out for some family celebration. My youngest sister, Robin, was upset — disabilities had made her life challenging, and she was depressed. I remember sitting outside the restaurant with her, the cicada buzz providing her a pleasant distraction. My sister laughed and smiled as we talked about the strange visitors and life itself.

Now, it’s my fourth cicada birthday.

Joe Biden is in the White House, and Brandon Johnson is in City Hall. Sadly, Mom, Dad and my sister Robin are no longer here to see or hear this brood. Boo isn’t around to bark at the noisy trees. But our family has grown in other ways, with two more grandchildren and our first great-granddaughter.

I’ve moved on from politics to breaking news. The cicada beat is in good hands with Mary Norkol , whose hands are especially full with the overlapping emergence of the 17-year cicadas up here and a 13-year variety in southern Illinois.

As for this great-grandfather, I’ll be content to take out the memories I have stashed away and look forward to building some new ones to cherish on my next cicada birthday. I hear your fifth birthday is a big one.

Thanks, cicadas, for showing us how to pack so much into life, no matter how long it is.

A 10-year-old boy woke up to find his family dead: What we know about the OKC killings

The suspected shooter's youngest son woke up and discovered the "massacre", police say. a motive for the crime is still unknown..

A 10-year-old boy woke up to find his mom, dad and three older brothers shot to death in what police believe to be a murder-suicide in Oklahoma City , authorities say.

The Oklahoma City Police Department said they believe the boy's father "systematically" went through the house between Sunday night and Monday morning shooting his sons after he shot his wife multiple times.

"Those children were hunted down and killed," said Master Sgt. Gary Knight, the assistant public information officer for the Oklahoma City Police Department, at a press conference Tuesday morning.

However, police say that the father left his youngest son, the 10-year-old who later called the police, unharmed.

"We don't know why he was left unharmed," said Knight. "I know that's the question everybody has, that's the question we have, too. In the end, nobody's ever gonna know the answer to that."

Who was killed?

According to police, the following were killed in the shooting:

• 39-year-old female - Police say she was the mother of the children and wife of the suspect.
• 42-year-old male - Suspect who police say died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he shot his wife and three oldest sons.
• 18-year-old male- The oldest son of the couple. He would've turned 19 next month.
• 14-year-old male- Son of the couple who was also shot.
• 12-year-old male- Son of the couple and youngest murder victim. He just turned 12 in March.

What happened?

Around 9:35 a.m. Monday morning, the child called police and alerted them to the incident at the house near Yukon, roughly 20 miles west of downtown Oklahoma City.

When police arrived, Knight said they found the 10-year-old outside before they went into the house, where they found the five bodies that belonged to the people listed above.

After confirming they could not save anyone in the house, Knight said they left and waited for a warrant so they could process the scene.

Knight adds that the boy was placed in the custody of a relative, but did not specify who.

According to Knight, investigators determined that the suspected shooter got into an altercation with his wife. It ended when he armed himself with a gun and shot her multiple times.

Police say victims were found in different parts of the home

He then went through the house and killed his sons. The motive for the killings is unknown, said Knight. He added that the bodies were found in different areas of the two-story house.

One of the male victims and the female victim were found downstairs, while two of the male victims were found upstairs. At least one of the male victims was shot in bed, Knight told USA TODAY. But, aside from the female victim, he is not sure who was shot where.

Knight told USA TODAY that police believe the suspected shooter began his rampage downstairs, then went upstairs before returning to the first floor and killing himself.

Family was flying 'under the radar', Sgt. Knight says

At the press conference, Knight added that there was no known history of domestic problems between the couple, but said police are going to speak with friends and family to see if they know of anything else about their relationship.

He told USA TODAY that police had no calls or reports of any domestic violence from the family.

"We had no indication that anything like this was going to happen," said Knight.

He said usually when people "annihilate" their families like this, there is a history of domestic violence reports and protection orders, but he said this family was "really flying under the radar."

A month-old baby boy is dead on Staten Island and detectives were interviewing his parents in connection with the infant’s demise, police sources said.

Cops responding to the West Brighton Houses at around 6:45 a.m. Saturday found the “unconscious and unresponsive infant,” who had “visible signs of trauma to the left arm,” authorities said.

EMS transported the baby to Richmond University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Two “persons of interest” were taken into custody, the NYPD said.

Sources said detectives were interviewing the baby’s parents.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and the investigation remains ongoing, authorities said.
