Re-Invention World Tour

The Re-Invention World Tour  was the sixth concert tour by American singer-songwriter  Madonna . It supported her ninth studio album  American Life  and visited North America and Europe.

Background [ ]

The Re-Invention World Tour was Madonna's sixth concert tour in support of her ninth studio album  American Life . In 2003, Madonna collaborated with photographer Steven Klein for an art installation project called  X-STaTIC Pro=CeSS . The installation portrayed Madonna in different incarnations of her spiritual practices – from yogi, prophet, queen to freak and pole dancer. The publication was a worldwide success, leading to a number of exhibitions in New York, London, Paris, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Florence. After the exhibition was over, Madonna was inspired by the images from the exhibitions and decided to incorporate them into her then unplanned tour and asked Klein to help her with the task. The poster released for the tour used one of the images from the installation project. It featured Madonna in a seventeenth century style dress, crawling on all fours towards the camera.

The main intention of the tour was to transform Madonna's old hits musically and display her capacity for transformation and self-reflection. The tour was initially known as the Whore of Babylon World Tour, although Madonna later denied using this name. The idea was to portray Madonna as the Whore of Babylon, the figure of evil as mentioned in the Book of Revelation. However it was later changed to the Re-Invention World Tour, to make it a self-confident dig at all the critics and people who have expressed their views about Madonna re-inventing her image over the years. The official tour poster displayed Madonna in a vintage bolero gown and a large French Renaissance-like hair-bun. Air-conditioning was turned off during the tour on Madonna's request as she claimed it dried up her throat during singing.

Development [ ]

I Love New York Fresno

Madonna was supposed to debut " I Love New York " in a different version for the tour, but it was remade for Confessions on a Dance Floor .

During the rehearsals of the tour, the show rehearsals would start with I'm So Stupid and Dress You Up . But they were later dropped from the show. Other songs taken out from the initial set list include Love Profusion , Swim , Live to Tell and Take a Bow . The opening song for the show was decided as Vogue for a long time, until Madonna decided to use "The Beast Within" as the opener. The finale of the show was decided to be Holiday rather than Die Another Day with Imagine being added to the setlist. Two new tracks rehearsed for the show included Devil Wouldn't Recognize You and I Love New York . I Love New York was then remade as a dance track for her tenth studio album  Confessions on a Dance Floor , while Devil Wouldn't Recognize You was included in her eleventh studio album  Hard Candy . Ray of Light was also rehearsed during the initial phases, but Madonna later decided to eliminate it, as performing the song at the beginning of the show would hurt her voice beforehand. Finally twenty-four of the thirty rehearsed songs ended up on being the official setlist for the show.

The costumes for the tour were created by designer Arianne Phillips. Before the show started,  USA Today  reported that Madonna will be making five costume changes in the tour. Phillips commented that since Madonna was revisiting her old songs for this tour, hence that was the main philosophy and inspiration behind designing the costumes. However she also noted that "Madonna has always pooh-poohed the concept of reinvention and doesn't strategize or premeditate her new look in a boardroom, so this is the greatest ironic statement of all." The T-shirts were designed by Jean-Paul Gaultierand the shoes used were provided by clothing line hosiery Miu Miu. The opening dress was created by French designer Christian Lacroix and incorporated the baroque look. The second part of the displayed military themed outfits inspired from the  American Life  album and designed by Phillips. The third ensemble emphasized on the emotional point of the show and hence the costumes were quieter and displayed thesilhouettes of the performers. The costumes of this segment were designed by Stella McCartney. Phase four costumes, inspired by the carnivals, were designed by Chanel. The final segment of the tour displayed traditional dresses. Other than these, Madonna wore corsets during the first segment.

Dare Madonna to Go on Her Own Eras Tour?

Portrait of Justin Curto

Madonna is getting back into the groove — of 40 years of hits. The pop icon will go on her first retrospective tour, the Celebration tour, beginning this summer to honor the 40th anniversary of her self-titled debut. And she announced it with a fitting blast from the past: a clip paying homage to her 1991 documentary, Truth or Dare . In it, Madonna plays dirty “truth or dare” over dinner with the most random crew of celebrities one could pull together, from Jack Black to Kate Berlant to a “too stoned for this shit” Lil Wayne, before Amy Schumer dares her to go on a career-spanning tour. “Wait, hold on — that’s a lot of songs,” says the woman with the most top-ten hits of any female artist, at 38. How’s that for a stacked set list?

The 37-date trek through North America and Europe will also feature Madonna’s first arena shows in nearly a decade, since her 2015–16 tour behind Rebel Heart . Tickets go on sale this Friday, January 20. The party kicks off July 15 in Vancouver, with stops in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles before the North American leg ends in Las Vegas on October 7. (On the proper anniversary of Madonna , July 27, she’ll be in … Tulsa, Oklahoma.) The European leg follows with a London date on October 14, before wrapping in Amsterdam on December 1. Bob the Drag Queen, among the friends in the announcement clip, will open all dates. The tour follows a career-spanning box set from last year, Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones , after Madonna’s last proper album, Madame X , came in 2019. (It’ll also tide us over for Madonna’s self-directed biopic starring Julia Garner .) Find the run of North American dates below — and start praying that your favorite songs make the cut.

hacks season 3

Hacks Isn't Just About Comedy. It's About Reinvention.

Through Deborah Vance, we’re reminded that women in the public eye are chastised both for changing too much or not enough

Hacks is a show that is ostensibly about the craft of comedy, and the niche obsessions, beefs, and insecurities of those who spend their lives trying to make other people laugh. But it’s also about relationships, particularly the complex bond between Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder). These two women look and sound totally different, but they are united by the common goals of redemption and reinvention. They're both fighting for relevancy in the incredibly competitive comedy world, and they find, over and over, that they get closest when they work together. Hacks doesn’t merely explore the constraints society places on female stars, or the lonely glory of “making it” as a woman—it asks whether they can be overcome.

When we first met Deborah and Ava in the first season of Hacks , they were stuck in separate ruts. Comedy icon and QVC maven Deborah was on autopilot at her Las Vegas residency, telling the same jokes every night to easily pleased crowds. Struggling writer Ava had been recently “canceled” over a clumsy tweet and seemed overwhelmed by the gulf between her ambitions and her status as an industry pariah.

Together, the pair reimagined Deborah’s act as a retrospective of her decades-long career. As Ava pushed her to step out of her comfort zone—mining her trauma for laughs—we saw that Deborah still had scars from the betrayals and failures of her long career.

On the other hand, Deborah taught Ava the resilience she would need to make it. “You think this is hard?” she scolded the younger comic. “You have to scratch and claw and it never fucking ends. And it doesn’t get better. It just gets harder.”

Through Deborah, we’re reminded that women in the public eye are chastised both for changing too much and for not changing enough. It’s a burden felt by even the most famous. Taylor Swift has leaned into “eras” as a concept and cashed in heavily by doing so. (Later this summer, she will conclude her Eras Tour—a multibillion-dollar monument to the singer’s ability to reinvent herself.) But in April, when Swift dropped her new album(s), The Tortured Poets Department, the most common complaint I saw on my social feeds was that her new music didn’t deviate enough from her previous “eras,” Midnights and Folklore .

In Swift’s 2020 Netflix documentary, Miss Americana, she explained the pressure on female musicians to reinvent themselves “20 times more” than the men. “Be new to us, be young to us, but only in a new way and only in the way we want. And reinvent yourself, but only in a way that we find to be equally comforting,” she said. “Live out a narrative that we find to be interesting enough to entertain us, but not so crazy that it makes us uncomfortable.” In Hacks , Deborah is stalked by the same fear—that, no matter her achievements, she is only one bad decision away from being branded a “flop.” She often seems isolated by her success.

Still, the prize for reinventing yourself can be transformative. At the start of season three, everyone wants a piece of Deborah. The high-stakes risk she took on her comedy special paid off—and then some. Swift experienced something similar in 2014, when pop-crossover album 1989 saw her evolve from a country star to a cultural phenomenon.

More recently, country pivot Cowboy Carter has taken even Beyoncé’s blindingly bright star to a new stratosphere. And of course, we can’t forget the woman who created the blueprint for pop-star reinvention: Madonna. Last month, the Queen of Pop wrapped up her Celebration Tour—a tribute to her 40-year career—with a concert on Rio de Janeiro’s famous Copacabana beach , attended by a record-breaking 1.6 million people.

2024 iheartradio music awards show

Riding the high of her own retrospective, Deborah is on a similar path of reclamation. If the first two seasons were focused on the craft of comedy and relationship dynamics, the third has much more emphasis on the Succession -style strategizing behind Deborah’s career. ( Hacks is basically Succession for people who never really understood what NFTs were.) Deborah sets her sights on the one thing that has always evaded her: hosting a late-night talk show. And as a coproducer on the successful sitcom On the Contrary , Ava is also making moves. During a panel discussion with industry experts, a young woman asks for tips on breaking into comedy. This time, it’s Ava’s turn to deliver the advice Deborah once gave her: “It doesn’t get better, it just gets harder.”

I’m on record arguing that reinvention is an innately queer theme. Hacks doesn’t bill itself as a queer comedy, but it’s one of the queerest shows on TV. Jean Smart and Deborah (whose life story is very similar to the late Joan Rivers’s) both have legions of gay fans. Throughout the show we see Ava’s relationship with her on-again, off-again girlfriend, Ruby, via her hookups with DoorDash drivers, Republican dominatrixes, and a trip on a lesbian cruise. Deborah’s assistant-turned-CEO, Marcus, also goes on a journey of discovery, including a doomed attempted relationship that sends him looking for answers on the dance floors of gay clubs.

hacks season 3

There is certainly something symbiotic about the queerness of Hacks and the show’s focus on reinvention. Whether it’s coming out of the closet and forging a new life for yourself, changing your body and appearance, or the long-held gay tradition of stanning women who have shapeshifted their way into longevity, reinvention is particularly relatable to an LGBTQ+ audience.

Hacks doesn’t flaunt itself as a “feminist show,” either. In fact, Deborah often disparages what she perceives as the victim-centered feminism of younger women like Ava. Still, the show explores the elevated standards that are placed on women with hilarious (and occasionally devastating) effect. In episode six, we see Deborah—a very talented golfer—pretending to be a novice in order to appear unthreatening to the male industry bosses she needs to impress.

Despite being on top of the world, there is a desperation to her—a sense that, in the final act of her career, time is running out. “Anything I want to do, I have to do it now. Otherwise I’ll never do it,” she tells Ava, when two of them get lost in the woods. “The best part of being young is that you don’t have to savor anything. That’s the ultimate luxury.”

It would be easy for Hacks to descend into a predictable schtick of boomer reactionary versus “woke” Gen Z moralizer. (After all, both Deborah and Ava enjoy playing up to those roles—usually as a way of provoking one another.) But their creative partnership flourishes because they respect each other and learn from their differences. In episode four, when Deborah is invited to spend an evening with the chauvinistic male comics she once idolized, she is confronted with the reality that, like it or not, Ava has softened her outlook on things. It is this reciprocity that makes their relationship—part familial, part professional, part adversarial—one of the most captivating on TV right now.

Perhaps the real message of Hacks isn’t just about all the extra pressures on women, but the blueprint Deborah and Ava provide for helping each other to thrive regardless. Deborah wants to equip Ava with the thick skin she needs to succeed—to be better than the best. And as much as she tries to push Ava away, the truth is that each of them rely on each other for that special, unplaceable something. Their ambitions are by no means friction-free, but it is by working (and laughing) together that they can both dream bigger. As Ava says in a New Yorker profile of her idol: “A hack is someone who does the same thing over and over. Deborah is the opposite. She keeps evolving and getting better.”

Billy Eichner

Billy Eichner is finally getting to live out his childhood dream of a being in a major stage musical.

The “Bros” star is making his Hollywood Bowl singing debut this weekend during “ The Lion King ‘s” 30th anniversary live-to-film concert.

“We just had our first official rehearsal all together this morning,” Eichner told me Wednesday afternoon. “The scope and size of it really knocked me out. If I can get through it, I think it’s going to be really fun.”

Young Eichner calmed down in time for the show: “I was blown away. I could not stop watching Nathan. He just blew my mind, just the ultimate musical comedy star.”

Eicher became friends with Lane, who played Timon in the original “Lion King” movie, after they were introduced at a birthday party for Bridget Everett. “When I got the role of Timon and he saw the movie, he was always sending me emails of support,” Eichner said of the Tony winner. “When I had gotten some good reviews, he was congratulating me. He’s my hero, so to be on stage with him is truly wild.”

With Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter making her feature film debut in “Mufasa” as Kiara, the daughter of Nala (Beyoncé) and Simba (Donald Glover), I asked Eichner if he got to work with the music superstars’ offspring. “I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say, so I’m not going to say it,” he said. “But I’m excited about ‘Mufasa.’ We just had what I think was maybe our final recording sessions with [director] Barry Jenkins. It was the first time I’ve seen any of the movie.”

But for now, all his attention is on the Hollywood Bowl. He’ll take part in a full dress rehearsal later today. “All of the producers have flown over from London,” Eichner said. “We’re all finally in person together with the orchestra and the conductor and choreographer Jamal Sims and so many dancers — so many dancers! I feel like I’m on Madonna’s Blond Ambition tour.”

Rob Schneider

Comic Rob Schneider was pulled from another stage this week when his act at a fundraiser in Canada , which many found inappropriate for an event supporting a hospital, led organizers to cut him off.

On Saturday at an event called the Four Seasons Ball — a fundraiser for the Hospitals of Regina Foundation — Saturday Night Live alum Schneider was scheduled to perform a comedy set for the crowd at the annual gala. His politics-heavy comedy style, however, did not seem to match the tone of the evening.

We reiterate this sincere and unconditional apology today, for any offense caused by Mr. Schneider’s recent comedy set, at the Four Seasons Ball.”

While the foundation did not detail any of the offensive material that led to Schneider’s ousting, some of those in attendance appeared on TV and posted on social media.

“Everyone in the room was groaning, saying, ‘What is going on?’ Like whispering to themselves. Not a single laugh at times,” witness Tynan Allan told the CBC . “It was just very apparent how uncomfortable everyone felt and how unacceptable the things he was talking about were.”

Allen added that he was perplexed by the foundation’s decision to include Schneider.

“I understand that you’re raising money, that you sometimes need to draw a crowd, but it doesn’t take a lot to vet people and specifically to vet people from a values-based perspective,” he told the network.

The event, a private fundraising affair, had sold out; the organization had raised over $350,000 for Regina’s hospitals.

Schenider was similarly pulled from the stage in the middle of a stand-up set at a GOP event in late 2023; although The Hot Chick star denied that he was removed from the stage , multiple witnesses reported his set was cut short when his jokes were deemed too lewd for the conservative crowd.
