Travel Guide to Miri in Sarawak, Borneo

While Kuching's city mascot is the cat, Miri claimed the seahorse — famous for its gentle gracefulness. Despite a handful of high-rise hotels dotted around the city, Miri still retains the charm of a small town; the culturally-diverse people in Miri are very warm and friendly to visitors.

Miri is the second largest city in the Malaysian state of Sarawak on Borneo . The discovery of oil 100 years ago transformed Miri from a quiet fishing village into a wealthy city of around 300,000 people. The close proximity to Brunei makes Miri extremely popular with expats working for the oil companies.

Miri acts as an excellent base for exploring the many national parks in northern Sarawak including Gunung Mulu National Park , Sarawak's only UNESCO site. Lambir Hills National Park is only 30 minutes from the city; Niah National Park — famous for its massive caves — is only one hour from Miri.

Orientation 

Unlike Kuching's pleasant waterfront, the mucky waterfront in Miri is mostly industrial. Instead, the tourist scene is focused around Jalan North Yu Seng — a busy stretch of restaurants, cafes, and hotels.

The Tourist Information Office, as well as the Forestry Office, are located adjacent to the main bus terminal in the southwest corner of the city.

A large park with brick paths, Chinese garden, and public pool occupies most of the eastern side of the city. Aside from the nightlife district — known as the Survey Area, all sites around Miri can be easily reached by walking.

Just west of Miri — 15 minutes away by bus — is a beach esplanade with a picnic area that is a popular gathering spot for local families on weekends.

Things to Do 

• San Ching Tian Temple: Located only 15 minutes outside of Miri, San Ching Tian is the largest Taoist temple in Southeast Asia. To visit the temple, take bus #44 to Krokop.
• Taman Selera Beach: Only 15 minutes west of Miri, this dirty beach is a popular spot with locals on weekends. The beach esplanade is a pleasant picnic area with many seafood restaurants open only in the evenings. Buses #11 and #13 pass by the beach; you must tell the driver to stop.
• Hawaii Beach: Hawaii Beach is an undeveloped, wide stretch of sand less than 30 minutes west of Miri. Take bus #13 to visit the beach; the last bus returns back to Miri around 5 p.m.
• Miri City Fan: The large park in the east part of Miri contains a Chinese garden, amphitheater, public pool, and pleasant esplanade.
• Grand Old Lady: The "Grand Old Lady" is the nickname given to Malaysia's first oil well, which is now a monument at the Petroleum Science Museum. The monument is located just across the main road — Jalan Miri Pujut — south of Miri.
• Tamu Muhibbah: Farmers come to this market to display their fruits and vegetables. The market is located just south of the main bus terminal.
• Lambir Hills National Park: Located only 30 minutes away, the Lambir Hills National Park is famous for its staggering diversity of trees and plants. The national park has cheap accommodation; inquire at the Forestry Office located next to the main bus terminal.
• Imperial Mall: Located at the bottom of the Imperial Hotel on Jalan North Yu Seng, the Imperial Mall is a modern shopping complex with a large supermarket attached.
• Soon Hun Shopping Complex: Located within the Mega Hotel, this dimly lit mall has a dingy feel compared to the nearby Imperial Mall.
• Bintang Mega Mall: Located on the main road in the south of Miri, the posh Bintang Mega Mall is currently undergoing a serious facelift; the city's only Starbucks is found inside.
• Miri Handicraft Centre: Although there are a few artisans making unique crafts inside, the Handicraft Centre is mostly a collection of overpriced souvenir shops under one roof.
• Boulevard Shopping Complex: This massive shopping complex is located in the Boulevard Commercial District near the main bus station.

Miri is a great place for eating. Like the food in Kuching, Miri has its own interesting eateries serving delicious Sarawak food, Malay, Thai, Indian, and seafood.

Ming's Cafe on Jalan North Yu Seng is a popular, open-air spot serving wonderful local and Indian food. Despite the large portions and popularity, an average meal is still cheap.

Aside from a few expensive bars and sleazy karaoke pubs located in the heart of Jalan North Yu Seng, the bulk of Miri's nightlife happens in the Survey area just outside of the city. Unfortunately, a taxi is required to reach the cluster of bars and nightclubs; all drivers know the bars.

The current live-entertainment and dancing hotspots are "Cherry Berries" and "Balcony" — both open until 3 a.m. Both clubs charge a steep cover on weekends.

Getting to Miri

By Air: The brand new Miri International Airport (MYY) was recently declared the busiest airport in Sarawak. Both Air Asia and Malaysia Airlines operate many flights a day to all parts of Malaysia. Tiny MASWings flies to rural areas and the Gunung Mulu National Park.

By Bus: Long distance buses run between Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, Brunei, and Miri. Buses arrive at the Pujut Corner long-distance bus terminal just outside of the city. Bus #33A runs hourly between the main bus terminal and the long-distance bus terminal.

If arriving in the evening, you must either hire a private car to get to Miri from the long-distance bus terminal or walk to the main road and flag a bus going toward town. Surprisingly, there are no buses or taxis after 6 p.m; wait at the bus stand nearest to the Petronas station

15 Best Things to Do in Miri (Malaysia)

Little-known Miri in Sarawak played a crucial role in modern-day Malaysia.

In the early 20th-century, geologists struck oil in Miri. The town boomed attracting migrant workers from China. Malaysia’s black gold fuels much of the economy today.

But this small oil-rich city on the South China Sea isn’t just about petroleum.

It has a thriving Chinese community, Sarawak’s oldest Buddhist temple and a handicraft market selling all kinds of locally produced goods.

Miri acts as a gateway to four surrounding national parks, beaches and occasionally hosts the enchanting Blue Tears too.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Miri :

1. Panoramic views from Canada Hill

Canada Hill, sometimes called Miri Hill, towers behind the city center.

The limestone hill reaches a height of 150 meters (492 feet). A network of easy trails leads to its summit for the city’s best views.

An army of taxis awaits those looking for a quick way up.

Marvel at the panoramic over the small city and the South China Sea in the distance.

Canada Hill (Bukit Minyak in Bahasa) is a favorite place to see both the sunrise and sunset.

2. The Grand Old Lady: Malaysia’s first oil well

The Grand Old Lady on Canada Hill marks the spot where Shell first drilled oil in Miri back in 1910.

Standing at 30 meters (98 feet), the monument is a replica of Malaysia’s first oil well. The landmark offers a window into the importance of the industry which revolutionized Malaysia.

While the monument itself isn’t much to look at, travelers usually combine the experience with hiking Canada Hill.

Snap photographs and consider how the oil discovered in this spot fueled the nation’s development and paid for Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers.

3. Learn about the crucial role of Miri at the Petroleum Museum

The Petroleum Museum on Canada Hill tells the story of oil in Miri.

Before its discovery in 1910, Miri was a relatively small fishing village. Locals lived in wooden houses. They made their living from the South China Sea.

Miri transformed in a few decades. Wealthy magnates moved to the area. Chinese migrant workers changed the demographics.

The Petroleum Museum covers this story while giving snippets on oil extraction methods.

4. San Ching Tian: Miri’s most extravagant temple

The grand San Ching Tian is among Southeast Asia’s largest Taoist temples.

Set inside a tranquil garden, the temple has an elegant entrance and a two-tiered orange roof. Intricate dragons decorate the exterior while bronze statues of religious icons fill the inside shelves.

Since opening in 2000, San Ching Tian has become one of the most visited places of worship in Miri.

The temple is approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) northeast of the city center.

5. The oldest Buddhist temple in Miri

Tua Pek Kong holds the title as Miri’s oldest temple.

Chinese immigrants enticed by the booming oil industry built this temple in 1913. They dedicated it to their deity who protects all overseas Chinese.

Tua Pek Kong is next to the river in Miri’s old town. The temple exhibits a colorful exterior decorated with dragons.

Visitors need to remove their shoes to enter. Take care to follow the local customs. Limit the number of photographs when monks are inside.

During Chinese New Year, the temple and its neighbourhood transform into a street-wide celebration. This lively festival bursts with color, noise and energy.

6. Search for local craft at the Handicraft Center

Local artisans sell their handicraft at the Miri Handicraft Center.

The small center along Jalan Brooke has dozens of stalls where vendors showcase their handmade products.

Some sell traditional weaved objects, which includes mats made by the indigenous Penan peoples. Others have textiles, handbags and traditional clothes.

Stroll through the passageways and meet Sarawak’s indigenous communities who fall under the umbrella term ‘Dayak’.

Marvel at the colors, craftsmanship and detail. Wave to the smiling elderly women sat next to their stalls.

Miri Handicraft Center is the most recommended place in Miri to buy souvenirs.

The center opens daily between 9:00am and 6:00pm. Cultural shows sometimes take place in the evening.

7. Gardens, promenades and a musical fountain in Miri City Fan

From above, Miri City Fan resembles the shape of a traditional handheld fan.

On the ground, it sprawls 26 acres separated into ten thematic zones. The park’s centerpiece is an amphitheater surrounded by a koi pond, maintained Islamic gardens and a promenade.

Sit beneath the trees and watch the musical fountain. Or head to Miri Library to brush up on local culture inside the spacious air-conditioned reading room.

After opening in the 1990s, Miri City Fan has been a hit with residents.

Joggers speed along the paths in the cooler morning and evening air.

8. Sunset cocktails at Miri Sky Bar

Meritz Hotel’s 17th floor Sky Bar provides unobstructed views of Miri and the South China Sea.

Tables fill the outdoor terrace in dry weather. Customers unwind outside admiring the views in the early evening.

Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available.

Sit outside with a glass of imported wine or a cocktail watching Borneo’s famous sunset. Or choose from their selection of coffee, smoothies and soft drinks.

Miri Sky Bar doubles up as a classy restaurant.

Locals usually go for the set-price steamboat. Steamboat uses a flavored boiling soup to cook meat, tofu and vegetables.

Check out their website for regular drink promotions. The sky bar opens between 6:00pm and 10:00pm daily.

9. Miri’s street food at Saberkas Weekend Market

Located approximately 3 kilometers (1.2 miles) northeast of the city center, Saberkas Weekend Market is a favorite with locals.

Rows of stalls have everything from fresh produce and tropical fruits to handicraft. Vendors sell street food at rock bottom prices including satay (Malaysian kebabs) and barbequed chicken.

According to Miri’s residents, Saberkas is among Sarawak’s friendliest and most colorful markets. Head down for dinner and see how the local’s go about their daily business.

The wet market, outside Saberkas Commercial Center, opens in the evenings from Thursday to Sunday.

10. A national park from another planet

Gunung Mulu National Park is like a scene from a sci-fi movie.

Limestone pinnacles rise into razor-sharp points guarding the entrance to dozens of almost hidden caves. Soaring mountains surround 17 vegetation zones inside the UNESCO-listed national park.

Guided tours pass through both Clearwater and Deer Cave before exploring canyons, waterfalls and otherworldly landscapes.

Keep your eyes open for primates, deer and billions of squeaking bats.

Getting to Gunung Mulu is almost as challenging as visiting another planet. Travelers need to either take a 30-minute flight from Miri or embark on a multi-day expedition through the jungle.

Most visitors usually stay the night in the park’s accommodation.

11. Sarawak’s best caves systems

Niah National Park has a reputation for its sprawling network of caves.

Located approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) to the south of Miri, Niah is more accessible than Gunung Mulu.

After arriving at the national park, guides take tourists through the limestone caverns. Look out for the geological wonders including the patterns of stalagmites and stalactites.

Other parts of Niah have ancient cave painting and pagan burial sites.

Archeologists discovered the oldest human skeleton in Malaysia at Niah National Park too.

12. Jungle trekking in Lambir Hills National Park

Lambir Hills provides visitors with the chance to go jungle trekking near Miri.

Dozens of marked trails penetrate the rainforest. Some pass through differing ecosystems to waterfalls. Others rise to vantage points and natural pools.

Having a guide is essential.

Listen to their expertise as they identify the howls of distance gibbons and point to the occasional sun bear camouflaged against the tree trunks.

The most popular trails lead to both Pantu Waterfall and Latak Waterfall.

Pack plenty of water. Bring leech socks.

13. An equatorial sunset on Brighton Beach

Miri’s Brighton Beach is a highlight of the city.

Known locally as Tanjung Lobang, the beach with its two characteristic piers stretches along the South China Sea.

Local families play in the sand and swim in the warm, gentle waters. The wafting smell of barbeques hangs in the evening air.

But the real magic happens around 6:00pm when the equatorial sun dips towards the horizon. A mirage of oranges, purples and reds spread across the distant sky.

After sunset, stroll along the promenade and pick up some fresh seafood in the many beachside restaurants.

14. Empty beaches and strange rock formations on Tusan Beach

Tusan Beach is just far enough from Miri to keep the visitor numbers at bay. But close enough to reach within 30 minutes by car.

The beach itself has a long sandy coastline and gentle waters. Vertical sandstone cliffs tower against Tusan’s sandy shore.

Come down in the afternoon with your towel and enjoy the privacy of an empty beach for a few hours.

Or bring the camera and capture the strange rock formations caused by decades of erosion.

15. Witness the rare and hypnotic Blue Tears

The ocean and sea bursts with life so small that we need a microscope to see them.

Some of these micro-organisms are called dinoflagellates. Dinoflagellates have an uncanny ability to generate light under certain conditions.

Tusan Beach, when everything is just right, transforms into a glowing blue mass.

Tiny organisms glow neon blue which spreads across the sea as the waves roll in.

This natural phenomenon is known as the ‘Blue Tears’ in Sarawak and sometimes takes place at Tusan.

Witnessing this natural spectacle is both enthralling and awe-inspiring.

But it doesn’t happen every night, and you’ll need a big dose of luck to see it.

Miri is a city in Sarawak , Malaysia . It is the second largest city in the state (with a population of about 235,000 in 2010, and 290,000 in its district). It is on its northern coast near the border with Brunei . Known by its nickname "Oil Town", Miri is the birthplace of the Malaysian petroleum industry, as the city was founded in 1910 when the first oil well was drilled by Royal Dutch Shell. Petroleum has continued to drive the city's economy and development ever since.

Miri is the main tourist gateway to various national parks, which makes it a favourite ecotourism destination and can be arguably called the "Resort City".

The Sarawak Shell Berhad and Petronas Carigali are headquartered here. As a result, Miri has a cosmopolitan whiff as it hosts expatriates from all over the world, who work in these multinational oil and gas giants.

Visitors stop for transit here to change planes before heading onward to Gunung Mulu National Park or the famous Kelabit Highlands.

Miri boasts a diverse population, which consists of Chinese, Malay, Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Kelabit, Lun Bawang and many other ethnic groups. International students from a foreign university campus based here and expatriates from international corporations add much spice to Miri as well.

The main language the Sarawak dialect of Malay , which is similar to standard Malay but with local slangs. Nevertheless, all locals are able to speak and understand standard Malay if required. Most locals also have a rudimentary grasp of English, while upper class locals and service staff in the main hotels and tourist attractions usually speak English well.

Hokchiu/Foochow is the main dialect spoken by the ethnic Chinese community, though many are able to speak Mandarin as well.

By plane [ edit ]

• From Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia Airlines flies four times daily between Kuala Lumpur and Miri, with two stopping over at Kuching . AirAsia also flies direct non-stop three times daily.
• From Johor Bahru: AirAsia flies on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
• From Kuching: Malaysia Airlines flies three flights daily and AirAsia has one flight daily.
• From Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia Airline and AirAsia each have two flights daily. MASWings also puts on a Fokker flight on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
• From Singapore: Scoot flies three times a week, on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday.
• MASWings operates a web of flights to remote destinations in the interior, most notably Gunung Mulu National Park and Bario in the Kelabit Highlands . MASWings also links Miri with Limbang , Lawas and Labuan which will enable you to by-pass expensive Brunei . Go to their website to book flights on-line and check schedules.

By bus [ edit ]

4.414695 114.016168 2 Express Bus Terminal , also called Pujut bus terminal, is about 4 km north from the city centre. There are frequent city bus service (from 5AM to 9PM, takes 20-30 min) to nearby Boulevard Shopping Mall. The bus stop is at the pedestrian overpass and about 5 minutes walk from bus terminal. The taxi will cost RM20-30.

• From other Sarawak cities: Numerous bus companies such as Biaramas, Suria Bus Express and Borneo Highway Express link Miri with other Sarawak cities such as Kuching , Sibu and Bintulu . Most express buses depart from the Express Bus Terminal. From Bintulu the bus journey takes approximately 4 hours and cost RM 27. From Sibu it takes about 7 hours and costs RM 50 (2019).
• From Brunei: As of early 2019, there are two direct services between Bandar Seri Begawan and Miri. PHLS Express operates a dedicated BSB-Miri service, leaving BSB at 7AM and 1PM. In Miri buses leave from the long-distance bus station at 8:15AM and 3:45PM. Fare is B$22 or RM50 and purchased at the Banting Jaya counter (RM65 online via Easybook) ; B$12 or RM25 for children 3–10 (2019); tickets can be bought at the bus station or online. The bus will also stop in Seria , Tutong , or Kuala Belait if you buy a ticket to or from one of those towns. There is no longer local bus service between Miri and Kuala Belait in Brunei. The only bus connection between two cities is the above-mentioned express service.
• To/From Kota Kinabalu, Sabah: Bintang Jaya Express operates between Miri and Kota Kinabalu (KK). The route originates from Pontianak in Indonesia to Kuching, Miri, Limbang, Lawas ending in KK Wawasan Bus Terminal. Bus departs Miri at 8AM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The journey takes approximately 10 hours without changing buses. From KK the bus departs at 7.30AM on Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays.
• To/From Niah Caves: Bas Suria departs from the Miri Express Bus Terminal to Batu Niah town regularly. The journey takes over an hour. From Batu Niah, you can either take a speedboat or walk to the Niah National Park headquarters at Pengkalan Batu.

Local bus services are available in front of Wisma Pelita Tunku. Available route are Permyjaya, Tudan, Senadin, Taman Tunku, Hospital, RTM (Pujut Corner to Pujut 5) and Sungai Rait+Bakam. The fare is RM1 under RM1 Flat Rate Bus Fare Programme.

A car can be hired for a day for as low as RM 80 + RM 30 (delivery charges). Remember to purchase some Miri City Council-designed parking tickets, which cost RM 0.5 each. Parking space is free of charge during 11:45AM until 2:15PM on Friday, after 5PM, and weekends.

• Grand Old Lady and the Petroleum Museum . On top of Canada Hill. More prosaically Miri's No. 1 Oil Well , this was Shell's first oil well (the company's, that is, not just in Malaysia) and has now been declared a national monument. The museum is closed on Mondays.  
• Taman Selera . One of the most-visited beaches in Miri. A great place to go to on a Sunday afternoon for picnics, as well as a place for families and friends to have fun.

• Canada Hill , Go for an extreme hike on the jungle treks of Canada Hill. Every evening a group of trekkers or anyone else would go there for hike. It's a test of endurance but yet a healthy activity since you will be burning a lot of calories for that. However, slopes can get slippery during the rainy season, so always be careful and be prepared.
• Dive near Miri . Dive in the unspoiled coral gardens near Miri. CO.CO.DIVE (Miri trusted dive operator) and Red Monkey Divers (The always cheerful Steve) organizes day trips from the Miri Marina.

Lambir Hills National Park [ edit ]

4.19826 114.042898 1 Lambir Hills National Park is some 30 km south of Miri. Enjoy the wonders of nature and take a hike in the park. There are plenty of impressive tall trees, interesting bird songs, and several big and small picturesque waterfalls where you can swim as well. If you have keen eyes you may also spot frogs, lizards, and other wildlife. The park is popular at weekends when people from Miri travel there for a day visit. For longer stays, visitors can book one of several chalets. At the park headquarters there's a shop with snacks, drinks, and simple MYR5 hot meals.

There are several hiking trails for visitors to explore. These range from short and fairly flat walks to the long, challenging, and steep trek to the summit of Bukit Lambir, the tallest point in the park. If heading towards the peak, bring plenty of water, and turn back if it starts to rain, because the streams can flood dangerously.

Cost to enter the park is RM 20/person (RM 7 for children 7–18, free for 6 and under; prices updated 2019). Bring your passport or a photocopy—you need it to enter the park. The trails are open 8AM–4PM, but arrive as close to 8AM as you can to beat the midday heat for a short hike or to have enough time for a long hike—you have to be back at headquarters by 4PM.

Getting to the park takes 30 minutes by car or an hour by bus—buses en route to Bintulu may drop you at the park entrance gate however may charge full fare RM 25. It's also easy enough to take a taxi or a Grab to the park, but getting back can be tricky, as you won't find any taxis hanging around to pick you up. So either arrange a specific time for the taxi to come back and get you, or plan to take a bus back. The buses run once an hour, more or less; you can wait at the bus stop at the side of the road and flag one down to get back to Miri for RM 10. Alternatively you can take the bus the other direction to head to Bintulu or Niah National Park.

Bring more water than you think you'll need. It's humid!

For breakfast, the milk tea is the best, particularly at some stalls. The curry rice, fried rice noodles, dried noodles and laksa (spicy rice noodles) are dishes that you should not miss. Moreover, at night, the porridge and dried noodles with steamed chicken are the must-eat.

• 2020 Cafe - This restaurant is always packed on Sunday mornings. Famous for their dim sum. Be sure to get there extra early to secure a seat.
• Ming Cafe - Good Indian, Malaysian, Chinese and sea food. Serves Tiger Beer which is quite expensive at local prices but served cold in an ice cold glass. Good service. Try Laksa in Ming Cafe which is very delicious and is comparable to the Laksa in Kuching. Also highly recommended is the Roti!
• Naga Liar - Serves a local Malaysian delicacy, Nasi Lemak together other local favourites as well

I’ll never forget my perfect evening at Coco Cabana, one of my most joyous memories and one of Miri’s best places to visit. It’s on the beachfront and offers stunning views of the South China Sea. While I was at Coco Cabana, a prominent Japanese BonBon festival was happening over the weekend, and the atmosphere, with night entertainment and food stalls, was electric. I enjoyed trying different Japanese foods and watching the traditional Japanese dance performances. It was a fantastic experience.

Although events don’t happen every weekend at Coco Cabana, it doesn’t take away from the Miri attraction. The Sunset Bar, in particular, is a must-visit spot. They serve delicious food, and their signature cocktails are out of this world. The bar overlooks the sea and provides the perfect setting for a relaxing evening—no wonder it’s a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.

There’s always something happening at Coco Cabana, from the Sea Horse Statue, a popular photo spot, to various restaurants. The beachfront is perfect for long walks, and the sea breeze is refreshing. Miri, Sarawak Travel Guide 2022

Sitting at the northwest coastline of Borneo, bordering Brunei, Miri is the second largest city of the Malaysian state of Sarawak, with a population of over 230,000. Miri was once a little fishing village, but the discovery of an oil field in 1910 transformed it into one of Malaysia’s most important cities.

Miri’s Brighton Beach, also known locally as Tanjung Lobang, spans along the South China Sea and features two distinctive piers. Families from the area play in the sand and swim in the warm, soothing waters. The real magic happens at 6:00 p.m., when the tropical sun sets. The far sky was engulfed in a haze of oranges, purples, and reds.

2. Learn about the crucial role of Miri at the Petroleum Museum

On Canada Hill, the Petroleum Museum depicts the story of oil in Miri. Miri was a modest fishing town before its discovery in 1910. The residents resided in wooden houses. They made their living from the South China Sea. Miri changed in a matter of decades. Affluent magnates relocated to the area. The demographics of China’s migrant labourers have shifted. The Petroleum Museum tells this story while also providing information on oil extraction processes.

Local artisans sell their handicraft at the Miri Handicraft Center. The little area on Jalan Brooke contains dozens of kiosks where artisans sell their handcrafted items. Some vendors sell traditional woven goods, such as mats manufactured by the indigenous Penan peoples. Others sell fabrics, purses, and ethnic clothing. Stroll through the passageways and encounter Sarawak’s indigenous communities, known collectively as ‘Dayak.’ Miri Handicraft Center is the best recommended spot to buy souvenirs in Miri. The centre is open everyday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Cultural shows sometimes take place in the evening.

4. Jungle trekking in Lambir Hills National Park

Lambir Hills offers guests the opportunity to do jungle trekking near Miri. Several defined pathways wind through the rainforest. Some travel across several environments to reach waterfalls. Others climb to gain access to observation points and natural ponds. Listen to their expertise as they detect distant gibbon screams and point out the occasional sun bear concealed among tree trunks. The most popular hikes lead to Pantu and Latak waterfalls.

Awang Mahyan is a restaurant with numerous rows of hawker stands that is particularly popular among locals. Nasi Lalapan Ayam Panggang and their famous Mee Kolok are among the Malay dishes served here.

Meng Chai Seafood serves a broad variety of fresh seafood including crabs, fish, calamari, clams, and much more. The BBQ garlic fried pomfret, tom yam, and cangkuk manis side veg are all worth a try.

3. Container City

Nights in Miri aren’t complete unless you visit Container City. The hipster ambiance contributes to the overall vibe as you have dinner or supper there. Geprek Chicken from Berbara’s booth, Persian naan, and Borneo Latte from The Brew Crew’s market are all good options.

4. Kent’s Garden

In a peaceful homey ambiance, Kent’s Garden serves a decent assortment of local and western cuisines. Some menus to try out are their signature Kent’s Kueh Teow, Assam Laksa or Chicken Chop, if you’re in the mood for some western flair.

Sarawak travel itinerary- 9D8N to visit Miri, Niah, Mulu, Bario, and Brunei

I recently returned from a nine-day, eight-night holiday in Northern Sarawak, and here is our Sarawak travel guide. 

This article is the summary of the itinerary.  Besides, we wrote separate blog posts about Miri, Mulu Cave, Niah Caves, Bario, and Brunei, which you can read for more detailed information with the link provided in the respective section. We also created videos at each location, which you can watch on YouTube by following the link at the end of each blog post. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive guide with written and visual details to plan your trip to this region. 

So, without further ado, let’s dive into the specifics of our journey.

How did we plan our Sarawak travel itinerary?

We planned our trip in March earlier this year when we were aimlessly wandering at the Matta Fair held in Kuala Lumpur. Initially, we considered taking a holiday in Sarawak, including Kuching and Miri. However, we ended up at Brighton Travel & Tour’s booth, which specializes in inbound Sarawak travel. Wilson, the owner, informed us that the distance between Kuching and Miri is too far, and the places worth visiting are scattered.

Wilson showed us a map of Sarawak and suggested that we focus on Northern Sarawak this time. He recommended that we make another trip to Kuching and the surrounding areas on a separate occasion. After some discussion, we agreed to a bespoke itinerary that included Miri, Mulu, Niah, Bario, and Brunei. 

Bario was particularly intriguing to us as Wilson mentioned that the food, scenery, and the Kelabit culture were all exceptional. However, getting there proved challenging due to the airport’s short airstrip. Only MasWings’ Twin Otter plane with a capacity of 18 passengers would be allowed to land at Bario airport. Additionally, only nine passengers were permitted to board the flight according to the present regulation. He had to secure our return air tickets before our finalized itinerary.

Below is the itinerary for our recent holiday. This itinerary summarizes all the places we visited, including a day trip to Brunei. We scheduled only a few activities daily and took time to rest and relax in the hotel. 

Day 1- Miri city tour

• Arrival at Miri 
• Malaysia’s 1st oil well, the Grand Old Lady, located at Canada Hill.
• Tua Pek Kong Temple
• Local Handicraft & Souvenir Centre
• Miri City Hall
• Coco Cabana 
• Transfer to Imperial Hotel

We flew from Kuala Lumpur and arrived in Miri by noon. We were excited to explore Miri City with our guide, Andy. He took us to all the places according to our itinerary, and we had a great time. 

The weather was sunny, and we particularly enjoyed visiting Tamu Khas and Canada Hill. If you plan on doing a city tour, I recommend wearing a hat or cap and applying sunscreen as needed.

The highlight of the day was watching the sunset at Coco Cabana. The temperature had cooled down, and there was a nice breeze. This beachfront spot offers an unobstructed view of the sunset over the sea, which is truly beautiful.

Day 2 – One-day tour in Brunei

• Pick up at the hotel and head to Bandar Seri Begawan.
• Photo stop at The Billionth Barrel Monument
• Visit the Empire Hotel of Brunei
• Royal Regalia, which houses the Coronation and Silver Jubilee Chariot
• Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, which is one of the most magnificent mosques in South East Asia
• Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge
• Jame Asr Mosque, which is Brunei’s National Mosque and Brunei Museum
• Photo stop at Kampong Ayer, the “Venice of The East”
• Transfer back to Miri

Our Sarawak travel itinerary includes a detour to Brunei on the second day of our trip.  Although it’s advisable to stay overnight, we opted for a day trip due to our tight schedule. We started early in the morning to make the most of our time.

Our focus in Brunei was mainly on the grandeur of the buildings and the breathtaking mosque. We also visited the museum to learn about the royal family’s history. However, the most fascinating part of the trip was visiting the water village. We would love to hear what caught your attention the most during your visit to Brunei!

Day 3- Exploring Bario

• Transfer to Miri Airport – arrival at Bario – transfer to local homestay for check-in.
• Visit the ‘salt spring’ to witness the Kelabit way of producing mountain salt.
• Tosari Farm, Pa’ Ukat, Bario
• Transfer back to homestay with a cultural performance by the Kelapit people.

During our third day of the holiday, we headed towards Bario, the most captivating part of the trip. 

Boarding the small Twin Otter plane, which had only 18 seats, was an experience. However, only nine passengers could board at a time due to aviation regulations. The flight was at a low altitude, providing us with a breathtaking view of the mountains and the sea of clouds. The airport was a simple building with a single runway, and all the processes, ranging from ticketing to luggage claims, were handled manually.

Aside from the flight experience, the cultural performance was the highlight of our day. Usually, I am not a fan of cultural performances, but the performers invited us to dance and play games as if we were part of their family.

They didn’t treat us like guests or tourists, which created a magical atmosphere that allowed us to feel at ease and immerse ourselves in the cultural performance.

Day 4- Visiting the longhouse

• Pa’Ramapuh Waterfall
• Visit Bario Asal Lembaa Long House

We woke up early at Nancy Harris Guesthouse and were greeted by stunning views of paddy fields, misty mountains, and the constant crowing of roosters. Since we had free time in the morning, we took the opportunity to capture some aerial shots with our drone. We took photographs of the scenic surroundings, especially the Twin Pioneer Wreck, located right next to our guesthouse.

Later, we decided to go on a hike to Pa’Ramapuh Waterfall. It took us over an hour to reach, but the breathtaking views and peaceful surroundings made it worth it. We were the only ones there and enjoyed the tranquility.

The highlight of our trip to Baro was the visit to the longhouse. Our guesthouse owner, Nancy, took us to meet her relatives who lived in the longhouse. She explained their culture and practices and patiently answered all our questions. They also showed us their original kitchen, which they have used for decades.

Day 5 – Met a Kelapit lady with long earlobes

• Visit Kampung Arur Dalan at the foothill of Bario’s famous Prayer Mountain.
• Transfer to Bario Airport – Arrival Miri – Lunch – Check in at Imperial Hotel 

Today, we planned to return to Miri by flight. However, before leaving, we decided to explore the town center and indulge in local delicacies like the famous Bario laksa. Later, we headed to Kampung Arur Dalan, near the renowned Prayer Mountain. Due to time constraints, we couldn’t hike up the mountain, so we took a stroll around the village with some friendly locals. 

Although we didn’t encounter many Kelabit ladies with long earlobes, we were fortunate to meet one who was delighted to take some pictures with us. 

The rest of the day was spent traveling back to Miri and relaxing for the evening.

Day 6- Exploring Niah Cave

• Pick up at Hotel – Niah National Park
• Registration at Park Headquarters
• Proceed with an 800m walk to the Trader’s Cave, Great Cave, and Moon Cave, Painting Cave.
• Local ethnic lunch to be served in the longhouse
• Walk back to the Park Headquarters on the same plank walk
• Peliau Beach 
• Transfer back to the Hotel.

Today is ideal to explore the famous Niah Cave, about an hour’s drive from Miri. We explored the Traders Cave, Great Cave, Gan Kira, and Painting Cave during our visit. 

The most awe-inspiring sight we witnessed was the sunlight shining through a hole in the large chamber at the Great Cave. You will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the magnificent scene if you are there at the right time.

The Painting Cave is a sight to behold, and we were so captivated by its beauty that we took numerous photos of the paintings inside. It is fenced off to preserve the paintings, but fortunately, I captured some fantastic shots and video clips.

For lunch, we enjoy a delicious meal at the longhouse with an Iban family.

Afterward, we headed to Peliau Beach to witness a mesmerizing sunset scene.

Day 7 – Exploring Mulu Caves

• Check out from Hotel – Transfer to Miri Airport 
• Departure to Mulu – Transfer to Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa 
• Proceed for a plank walk to reach Lang’s & Deer Cave
• After exploring the caves, proceed to the bat observatory to observe the magnificent bat exodus
• Return journey on the same plank walk to Park Headquarters – Transfer back to accommodation for dinner and overnight

I’ve just realized that this Sarawak travel itinerary has so many flights in such a short time. We’re boarding planes three times a week, from large Boeing 737s to small Twin Otters.

This morning, we went to the airport again and headed to Mulu, where we’ll stay for two nights. Today, we visited Langs and Deer caves. We particularly loved Langs Cave’s rock formations and Deer Cave’s incredible water curtain.

It was drizzling in the evening when we observed the bats, but fortunately, it wasn’t a downpour. The bats still emerged from the cave in flocks, forming various patterns.

Day 8- Exploring Mulu Caves

• After breakfast, proceed by longboat to Batu Bungan – Penan Settlement to observe the culture & lifestyles of the Penan tribe. There is also various selection of handicrafts on display for sale.
• Continue the journey by longboat to Wind Cave & Clearwater Cave.
• Lunch at Mulu Cafe
• Proceed back to the resort for dinner and overnight

Our Sarawak travel is coming to an end, as we will be flying back to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow. Today, we visited the Penan Handicraft Center to buy some handmade items and learn how to use the blowpipe.

After that, we traveled upstream along the river to explore the Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave. Visiting these caves brought back memories of when I was here twenty years ago. I vividly recall the underground river, but the rest of the cave eludes me.

Day 9- Return Home

After breakfast, check out and transfer to Mulu Airport for your flight departure back to Miri. 

We ended our Sarawak travel, which included visiting Miri, Bario, Mulu, and Niah and crossing the border for a day trip in Brunei. We thank Wilson from Brighten Travel and Tours for arranging this wonderful trip. We plan to return to Sarawak before the end of the year and explore Kuching and its surroundings.

History of Miri

The history of Miri is also the history of Sarawak’s oil industry. The area had long been known for black oil that seeped from the ground, as noted by the Resident of Baram, Claude Champion de Crespigny, in 1882.  One of de Crespigny’s successors, Dr Charles Hose, persuaded the Anglo Saxon Petroleum Company, a British subsidiary of Shell, to conduct exploratory drilling in the area, and on August 10 1910, the first oil was struck on a hill overlooking the small fishing village of Miri, at a depth of 123 metres. The well, subsequently christened the “ Grand Old Lady ”, continued to produce oil until 1972.

With the discovery of commercial quantities of oil, Miri was rapidly transformed from a sleepy fishing village to a booming oil town. By the mid 1920s it had become the administrative centre of the Baram region, and continued to thrive until the onset of World War 2.  Shell staff did their best to sabotage the Miri oilfield, to prevent the invading Japanese forces from making use of it, but resourceful Japanese engineers soon had the field back to pre-war production levels.

During the late 1950s, the onshore oilfield began to dry up. Prospecting in remote peat swamp forest yielded poor results, so exploration moved offshore with the development of mobile exploration rigs. By the early 1970s offshore production had reached 95,000 barrels a day, but the onshore field was now in terminal decline, and was closed down on 1st October 1972. At the same time, the support and administration facilities were moved to Lutong, just north of the town.

The move offshore coincided with a boom in Sarawak’s timber industry, and Miri became a major timber processing and transhipment hub, so the economy of the town continued to grow throughout the 1970s and 80s. The tourism sector also began to take off, fuelled initially by weekend visitors from nearby Brunei.  Miri continued to prosper throughout the 1990s, and in recognition of its booming population and crucial contributions to Sarawak’s economy, was granted City status on 13th May 2005.

Rush to evacuate thousands as Indonesia volcano erupts; S’pore flights among those cancelled

MANADO, Indonesia – Indonesian rescuers raced to evacuate thousands of people on April 18 after a volcano erupted five times, forcing the authorities to close a nearby airport and issue a warning about falling debris that could cause a tsunami.

The crater of Mount Ruang flamed with lava against a backdrop of lightning bolts overnight after erupting four times on April 17, forcing the authorities to raise its alert level to the highest of a four-tiered system.

The volcano on a remote island in Indonesia’s outermost region was still billowing a column of smoke in the morning on April 18, prompting the authorities to shut the nearest international airport in Manado city on Sulawesi island for 24 hours.

Houses on the neighbouring remote island of Tagulandang were riddled with holes from falling volcanic rocks, and residents were preparing to leave at least temporarily.

“The current condition, particularly the road condition, is covered by volcanic material,” local rescuer Ikram Al Ulah told AFP by phone from the Tagulandang seaport.

“Currently, many people are still wandering around. Maybe to evacuate precious goods from their house.”

The authorities said they were rushing to evacuate 11,000 residents from the area around Tagulandang, home to around 20,000 people.

Some residents were already trying to flee in a panic, according to officials.

“Last night, people evacuated on their own but without direction due to the volcano’s eruption and materials in the form of small rocks that fell, so the people scattered to find evacuation routes,” local search and rescue agency official Jandry Paendong said in a statement on April 18.

He said 20 staff were helping evacuate residents along the coastline near the volcano on rubber boats.

The authorities also evacuated a prison on Tagulandang island, ferrying 17 inmates along with 11 officials and 19 residents by boat to Likupang seaport in northern Sulawesi island, according to the rescuer Ikram.

The evacuation was requested by the prison chief because the facility sits directly across from the volcano, said the rescuer.

Tourists and residents were warned to remain outside a 6km exclusion zone.

More than 800 people were initially taken to safety from Ruang to nearby Tagulandang island after the first eruption on April 16, before four more eruptions on April 17 prompted evacuations from that island.

Mr Paendong called for more boats and equipment so that his team could “carry out evacuation for people in the coast or near the coast” facing the volcano.

Tsunami warning

The authorities also warned of a possible tsunami as a result of the eruptions.

“The communities in Tagulandang island, particularly those residing near the beach, (need) to be on alert for the potential ejection of incandescent rocks, hot cloud discharges and tsunami caused by the collapse of the volcano’s body into the sea,” Indonesian volcanology agency chief Hendra Gunawan said in a statement on April 17.

The authorities’ fears were compounded by previous experience.

In 2018, the crater of Mount Anak Krakatoa between Java and Sumatra islands partly collapsed when a major eruption sent huge chunks of the volcano sliding into the ocean, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 400 people and injured thousands.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago nation, experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an arc where tectonic plates collide that stretches from Japan through South-east Asia and across the Pacific basin.

The impact of Mount Ruang’s eruption led to the closure of Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado city, located more than 100km from the volcano, for 24 hours until the evening on April 18.

The airport runways were shut “due to the spread of volcanic ash which could endanger flight safety”, Mr Ambar Suryoko, head of the Manado region airport authority office, said in a statement.

The airport hosts airlines that fly to Singapore and cities in South Korea and China.

“All flights... impacted because the airport is affected by the eruption of Mount Ruang, volcanic ash,” 29-year-old Dimas, an airport officer in Manado, told AFP by phone.

In response to queries from The Straits Times, Changi Airport Group said flights to and from Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei, as well as Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Miri in Malaysia, may be affected as a result of the volcanic activity. These destinations are served by AirAsia, Royal Brunei Airlines, Scoot and Singapore Airlines.

It advised travellers to check the Changi Aiport website for the latest flight information, and those affected can contact the airlines for alternative arrangements.

Singapore budget carrier Scoot cancelled four flights that were scheduled to depart on April 18. The flights were between Singapore and Kota Kinabalu, and Singapore and Miri.

“Scoot apologises for the inconvenience caused. The safety of our customers and crew is our top priority,” Scoot said in response to queries.

“We will continue to monitor the situation in East Malaysia and will adjust our flight schedule as necessary,” Scoot said, adding that it is assisting affected customers.

Budget airline AirAsia cancelled flights to and from nine airports including Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Labuan, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Kuching and Brunei after the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia issued a volcanic ash hazard warning on April 18.

Flights from 10am on April 18 until 8am on April 19 will be cancelled, AirAsia said in a release.

SINGAPORE: Budget airline Scoot on Thursday (Apr 18) cancelled a total of six flights between Singapore and East Malaysia as well as Indonesia following multiple eruptions of Mount Ruang . 

The volcano in Indonesia  started erupting on Tuesday evening , pushing an ash column more than 1.5km into the sky, prompting local authorities to evacuate thousands and shut the nearest international airport in Manado city on Sulawesi island.

Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines (SIA), said the cancellations were a precautionary measure. 

It cancelled two flights scheduled to depart on Friday - TR216 and TR 217. The flights were between Singapore and the Indonesian city of Manado. 

It also earlier cancelled four flights between Singapore and East Malaysia on Thursday. 

TR490 and TR491 were supposed to fly between Singapore and Kota Kinabalu in Sabah while TR414 and TR415 were scheduled to fly between Singapore and Sarawak’s Miri.

“Scoot is assisting to reaccommodate affected customers onto subsequent flights, where available,” said the airline.

“Alternatively, affected customers may also request for a full refund if they choose not to continue with their travel.”

Other airlines in the region were also affected.

For instance, Malaysia Airlines said on Facebook that nearly 20 flights between Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Sarawak on Thursday were cancelled.

For budget airline AirAsia, flights to and from nine airports including Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Kuching and Brunei were cancelled, the airline said in a news release on Thursday.

In response to CNA's queries, an SIA spokesperson said the airline's flights were not affected by the eruption and were operating as scheduled. 

"SIA continues to monitor the situation and will adjust our flights accordingly," the spokesperson said.

PETALING JAYA: From family members and students to a would-be bridegroom, the eruption of Mount Ruang volcano in Sulawesi, Indonesia, has caused widespread disruptions to Malaysians – and even their pets – between the peninsula and the South China Sea.

Those affected by the cancelled flights to and from Sabah and Sarawak took to social media to share their experiences yesterday.

On X (formerly Twitter), Tiffa Riza expressed sadness for being unable to return to Kuching to pick up her cats.

“Please pray that my flight doesn’t get delayed because of the volcano eruption. I want to go pick up my cats,” she wrote before finding out about the cancellation of her flight.

She later updated her X status: “I can’t go home because of the volcano. Inbound and outbound flights from Sabah and Sarawak are all cancelled for today and tomorrow.”

A Facebook user, Han Budak Cina, said he was making a trip back to Sarawak yesterday for his wedding tomorrow.

“I was planning to go to Sarawak today (yesterday) ... I’m getting married this Saturday,” he wrote.

Another X user known as Miguel said many Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) students from Peninsular Malaysia couldn’t return to their classes in Sarawak following the suspended flights.

“Unimas students from the peninsula who want to go to Sabah and Sarawak this week can’t do so as all flights have been suspended,” he wrote.

Ju Razalli, whose flight from Penang to Sabah was suspended, attached a video of passengers queueing up to leave the aircraft with her post on Facebook.

“All passengers were instructed to leave (the aircraft).

“All flights to Sabah are cancelled effective immediately. Sabah’s airspace is closed,” she wrote.

Sharul Wong posted on Facebook that her daughter’s Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight from Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) scheduled for departure at 9.50am yesterday was also cancelled.

“Now, she is at KKIA, waiting for MAS to reschedule her flight,” he said.

According to news reports, over 2,000 passengers were stranded at Terminal 2 of KLIA due to the eruption of Mount Ruang.

The cancelled flights involve those to Sandakan, Labuan, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Kuching and Brunei, which are expected to be affected until 8am today.

Flights to Sabah, Sarawak cancelled due to Mount Ruang volcanic eruption

P ETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia cancelled flights between KLIA and Sabah and Sarawak today following the eruption of Mount Ruang in north Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Malaysia Airlines has cancelled 19 flights while AirAsia has cancelled 16.

The following Malaysia Airlines flights to Sabah have been affected:

• Kuala Lumpur to Tawau: MH7420
• Tawau to Kuala Lumpur: MH7421
• Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu: MH2612, MH2610, MH7404, MH2613

In a statement on Facebook, Malaysia Airlines said it was monitoring the situation and would provide updates as new information becomes available.

“Concurrently, the airline is working to accommodate passengers affected by the cancellation of flights on alternative flights once the situation progressively improves,” it said.

It also urged passengers to update their contact details through the MyBooking feature on its website to receive the latest updates through email and SMS.

Meanwhile, the following AirAsia flights have been affected:

• Kuala Lumpur to Tawau: AK5746, AK9746, AK5748, AK5744
• Tawau to Kuala Lumpur: AK5747, AK974, AK5749, AK5745
• Kota Kinabalu to Tawau: AK6260, AK6266, AK6268, AK6264
• Tawau to Kota Kinabalu: AK6261, AK6267, AK6269, AK6265

AirAsia, in a statement, advised guests travelling to or from the affected destinations to check their registered emails and mobile phones for cancellation notifications.

“AirAsia guests travelling to/from the affected destinations are strongly encouraged to check their latest flight status at airasia.com/flightstatus.

“AirAsia is continuing to monitor Mount Ruang volcanic activity and will provide more information on the latest developments,” it said.

Batik Air also announced the cancellation of 12 flights scheduled to operate to and from KLIA and Sabah and Sarawak today.

“We understand the inconvenience this may cause and assure you that the safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority.

“In the meantime, we are actively working to assist affected passengers by arranging alternative flights,” it said in a statement.

On Wednesday, multiple eruptions of Mount Ruang in Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province prompted the evacuation of at least 800 people.

The volcano has been active for several days, spewing lava and ash clouds.

Authorities have raised the alert level to the second highest, Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari, an official at Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, told Reuters.
